Computer slow to establish Internt connection and Web pages take forever to load

Q: Computer slow to establish Internt connection and Web pages take forever to load

The last week or so I noticed that my system seems to have slowed way down in regard to Internet use. It seems pages take forever to upload. Sometimes it just hangs. It doesn't matter whether I'm using Firefox or IE. Offline functions such as using Word or Encarta do not seem to be affected. I did all the usual things like updating and running CW Shredder, AdAware and SptBot which did not find any significant problems. I also ran a scan disk and defragged the hard drive. I also unplugged the modem and turned off the power to the computer so I could do a real cold boot. Nothing seems to improve the performance. I have recently installed Firefox 2.0.0.5. I had no problems before this when I was using Firefox 1.0.7. My system is using Windows 98se as an OS and has a 256 MB RAM with an 800 MHz Pentium III processor. I also have EZArmor installed which is an anti-virus and firewall package. Any ideas on how to improve the speed of Internet browsing?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There's evidence of a hack so please check this by running TDSSKillerDownload TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

"%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

Now click Start Scan.
If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
Click Close
Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

Hello,
I am having problems with loading almost all webpages. At first I thought it wmay just be a problem with Mozilla issue but the same problems occur in IE. Almost every time I try to access a webpage (except Google search page strangely) it will take forever to load and I am constantly finding I have to refresh (F5) a page to load it. I also sometimes get the "done" message at the bottom of the window and the webpage is only half loaded usually with images or pictures missing.
I have run my Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus scan but nothing has been found wrong

I also have problems updating iTunes (i get a generic error saying the update couldn't be completed) and there are certain things I can't download at all like Malwarebyte or free Adobe reader, I get errors about renaming file directories.

Please help!

A:IE 9 taking forever to load web pages

Have you tried reconnecting your router, perhaps the problem could lie in your internet rather than your browser. Also try downloading another browser (like google chrome) and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise just re-install IE9 and see if it helps.

Hope you get it running--Gilroy

I can't access random web pages and it takes others forever to load everything. I've tried flushing the DNS and clearing my cache as well as rebooting. I've run the ewido malware scan in safe mode and removed all malware during the scan. I can't access the pandasoftware page to run the online virus scan but I ran the ZoneAlarm scan and it found nothing. This has been going on for 3 days now.

I tried it on another computer and I'm getting the same thing. I'm not getting the page cannot be displayed screen but am getting either a default msn search page screen saying it can't find the site or some screen for com.org. On the com.org screen the address I typed has a ".org" attached to it. I was able to access the site "apartmentguide.com" earlier today and now it's doing the same thing as the others I can't access. Can anyone help me, please?

IE is taking a long time to load pages. For the heck of it I installed Netscape to see if it was that slow there too and its not. Netscape loads the pages almost instantly. For example, when I input ebay.com it takes IE close to a minute to display the page where Netscape only took 5 seconds.

Whats up?

Plus, when I try to access the Help and Support in Windows XP it takes forever to load.

Any ideas?

ok this is gonna be a bit long but i want the details there. the issue pc is my old pc. it has windows 7 its an asus msn-la motherboard i cloned this drive and used it in my new pc. after a few months my new pc's drive died and i took the old drive from the issue pc(witch was not giving issues at this time) and stuck it into my new pc until my replacement drive came. when i got the replacement drive i cloned the drive again onto the replacement drive and then put the new drive in the new pc had no issues there. put the old drive back into the issue pc (this is when issues started) the pc booted up to the windows desktop loading screen fast but once it got there it sat there for like 5 min before loading into windows. once it loaded into windows it was un usable for around 10 min while it loaded background stuff. once it finally loads into windows if i try to open anything its still responding extremely slow. is there anything i could do to fix this or is this going to me a re install only situation? i did try to use a windows 7 disk to do a startup repair but it claimed i couldn't do it because i dident install from that disk.

Could I possibly be infected? I am having problems with accessing any and all webpages. At first, I thought it was just a Mozilla issue, but the same problems occur in Google Chrome and IE. I will type in a URL and press enter and sometimes it will take forever to load, and if I click on the link again, it will bring it up instantly. It seems as if it is stalling. And other times, if I click on the link for a second time, it will say "done" on the bottom left hand side, but it will certainly not be done! I have been having this problem for weeks now and it is driving me crazy!
I have run Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes, my AVG antivirus scan, and the free Symantec one on the website. Nothing has been found wrong!
I tried restoring my computer to 4 different restore points but they were all unsuccessful.
I tried uninstalling Zone Alarm, thinking that was causing the problem, but nothing changed. I had k9 web protection on my computer, but uninstalled it weeks ago and I am still having problems. I have the same problem running my wireless or using an ethernet cable; on my network and at a friend's house.
Please help!

Uninstall it and then replace it with HiJackThis 2.0.4.

If you go to Control Panel - User Accounts, then change the UAC setting to "Never Notify", then restart the computer, HiJackThis will work properly without displaying a warning message.

On all browsers my pages will not load most of the time or may start but freeze shortly after. It is also taking forever for the browser itself to load. Chrome seems to be the worst. In my previous post after running a program and reboot I got a floating box "Input Not Supported" box that bounces around the screen like a screensaver and stays on top of everything else. I also noticed I keep hearing clicking noises from the speakers also. Thank you so much for your help.

I have an issue on my Win 7 Proffesional Del PC.

I get a download speed of around 0.5 and other computers on the network get around 5.0.
(Not a wireless Network)

After I do the following and reboot, I get around 5.0 download.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults.
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults.

I shut the computer off at night and the next morning it is back to slow download speed again.

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on?

My computer is lagging badly; mostly on the internet and especially with pages that have high graphics or are very 'busy'. I stopped using IE because it would lag so bad and freeze up. I started using Firefox, which worked great at first, but now it lags as well, but doesn't crash. I'd really appreciate someone looking over my log and helping me clean it up. Thanks!

About a week ago my computer started to run slower than normal. Programs would load at, what I thought, was the normal speed, and run just fine. Games worked fine. Loading of web pages worked just fine as well.

But as I said, about a week ago, my computer started running slower. Startup is fine and still fast. What has changed is the loading of programs will off and on be slow. When I do something within the program, sometimes it will freeze for just a moment before continuing with that process.

With the internet - web pages take extremely slow to load now. And when I click through pages on any website, myspace, facebook, gmail, cnn, whatever, each page within that site takes a while to load. A couple of times Firefox, of all things, has had to shut down unexpectedly. Sometimes it will give me an error message, and sometimes it just closes without any warning.

I have defraged my hard drive, scanned my computer with spybot, adaware, and Trend Micro Anti-Virus. And aside from the few 'low' security bits and pieces here and there, it hasn't picked anything up.

I have 1 GB of RAM on a Windows XP, AMD Athalon 3200+, EMachines computer. My computer is three years old. I have a large hard drive. I'm kind of at a loss and don't know what to do. I'm almost to the point of possibly just going out and buying another computer, but I thought I'd try this as I've heard positive things with the Hijack This program, so I am hoping with this progr... I have Windows Vista Ultimate running on my home PC with a lan cable directly into my broadband router. Now I must have installed something over the past few weeks to cause a problem, but I'm not sure what, because now it takes several minutes for the machine to establish a network connection.

Is there a cool way of finding out what the culprit is that's slowing down the network connection at startup and deal with it ?

I've run different utilities such as Windows Defender and CCleaner to disable as many as possible programs and services at start up but it still takes ages to establish a network connection.

Thanks.

Hi newbie here so go easy on me

My mum has a realtively newly built PC (about 2 weeks old), and has XP Professional installed along with Norton Antivirus 2003.

She is using dial-up internet with an external modem, and although her default homepage (bbc) loads straight away after that browsing becomes progressively slower and slower. Some pages do not load up at all after a while and she is forced to turn off her connection and try again. She cannot access any secure sites at all (for her internet banking and buying things). She has cleared her cache to no avail.

I have been told to see if a firewall is blocking secure ports 443, 84 and/or 8443. I'm not sure how to check that? I'm not even sure she has a firewall installed at all?

Should she try Mozilla Firefox? Should I install Norton?

I've checked her dialup internet provided (lineone/tiscali) and there appears to be no problems?

I have this problem where my firefox refuses to save my data to a website.

for example...I log into yahoo mail and tell it to save my username and password for 2 weeks...i exit firefox, come back in a second later and it didn't save any of it. i have to keep logging back in!

It;s my antivirus or my router, which would make sense to me. I disabled nod32 and it still didn't work, then i disabled my routers internet firewall, it still didn't work.

My laptop (which uses the same network and antivris) works fine.

any ideas?

What should you do when your laptop is running really slow, using Windows explorer is taking too long to load pages. I have Norton utilities and regularly scan my machine and some tracking cookies are deleted. Otherwise, no spyware is found. But my laptop is way too slow. My startup folder is empty.

I have windows task master open and it shows 80+ processes even when I'm not doing anything. Physical memory greater than 66%. My CPU usage is 3%. I have 4 GB of memory and am running 64 bit windows home edition on my Toshiba L675 laptop.

What troubleshooting steps can I take to identity what is running, identify what I can get rid of, and tell me how I get rid of it. How can I troubleshoot what is causing this laptop to run so slow.

There have been times when it is so slow that my keystrokes are not shown. At times, I have taken out the battery for a minute and then put it back in. That seems to help the keystroke issue.

I appreciate the troubleshooting steps,

A:Slow performance - Windows 7 lost keystrokes, forever to load

How many items are checked in the startup tab of msconfig? You should leave your antivirus checked, but beyond that it gets iffy. Uncheck a bunch and see if things improve. I have 6 checked.

How many non-Microsoft services are running? 5? 20? I've got 9. Do away with as many as you dare as an experiment. See if you lose any required functionality. See if speed improves.

I rarely have over 60 processes.

You've got an i3 with a likely modestly-performing 5400 rpm hard drive. I wouldn't expect miracles, but if it was once "fast" and is now "slow", you should be able to get to the source of the change.

I used to have an Acer laptop until the screen cracked about a week ago and I replaced it with an HP Pavilion. When I was using the Acer laptop, I never had any problems with my college's wifi, but a few days after I switched to the HP laptop I noticed a decrease in browsing speed. This decrease was extreme if the page I was trying to load contained images/videos. Additionally, my download speed was horrific, at about 9 KB/sec. Lastly, I have had trouble connecting to the network, with my computer telling me it can't connect several times before it connects. I uninstalled Java, disabled firewall, uninstalled antivirus programs, cleared browser cache, which helped a bit. Then, oddly at about 8 PM last night, the browsing/download speed of my computer returned to normal. However, it is as slow as ever this morning. I'm fairly certain the increase in speed was due to the fewer number of people connected to the network. Any ideas on what the root cause of the problem might be?

Hey, its been a while now since I've been having these problems. So I've fianlly decided to post on a forum and ask for help!

I have windows xp sp2 on a dual core p4 3.06 Ghz processor, 504MB of ram.

My computer used to work perfectly well before all of a sudden these problems started occurring. I have formatted my windows a hundred times but after a couple of days, the problems arise again.

Okay so to start with, my windows is taking forever to load. Once it loads, the windows introductory sound skips and glitches as it is with all the other music i play with itunes or any other software. When I play a video, the video also skips and makes weird sounds. My computer is being very slow with everything. When I open the task manager, I see the CPU usage varying constantly from 0 to 16 upto 70 percent, even when the windows is idle and system idle process is at a constant 98 percent. The system image is using 75000k plus memory (I thought it might be important in some way so I've mentioned it).

All this is really annoying. Is it a virus/malware or something? I have AVG anti-virus and everybody has told me its pretty good. Or is it a hardware problem with RAM or whatever. Please help me I'm clueless and I really don't want to reformat my windows AGAIN!

I'm posting my hijackthis log for you guys just incase it helps.

Hi-have been struggling with my system taking 2-3 minutes to find drivers for any memory stick I plug in to any of 3 USB ports on my Acer 1810T. When the process finally completes, the transfer speeds are about 1MB/s or less.

Another (possibly related?) problem is when I insert any SD card in the dedicated slot for the first time, everything is fine. Once I remove and either re-insert (or insert a different card), nothing appears. I get a message saying "process is already in memory". I have to reboot to get things working again.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Fugue

Hello fugue,

Are you properly ejecting all devices? There should be an option to safely remove devices.

Do you have all windows updates installed?

Go into device manager and look for any exclaimation marks. If you see some, update those drivers.

Hello -

As before, you seem well protected, and nothing is apparent in your HJT log. Do you do regular system maintenance, like deleting temp files and cookies, and defrag?

Do other programs access the internet freely? Such as updating your protection tools or using your email program?

Do you use an alternative browser such as Firefox or Opera? (You should, but that's for another tale) If so, do they experience the same slowness?

What sort of internet connection do you have? Broadband, dialup, modem, router, etc....

HJT is only one of several analysis tools at our disposal. Let's see if another one can find something amiss.

My PC stops excepting the internet every 6 to 10 min.
I have two computers one os9 mac one XP PC. I have a modem that connects to a router than a switch than feed my two systems.
In order to trouble shoot this I have a direct connection from the verizon modem straight to the PC, I have bi passed everything else, this is not wireless. The PC has a build in Ethernet adaptor, I have added a PCI 1gig Ethernet adaptor and disabled the built in one thinking it was a bad Ethernet adaptor?.
Basically this is what happens.
I am directly connected to the modem. I receive an internet connection for about 8 min. At that time the web pages will not load, no connection to the server, I can not ping anything. I am dead. Yet if I detach that same Ethernet cable from my PC and plug it into my Mac, the mac receives the internet. So it has to be something with my Computer. The connection is there.
I have turned off all firewall protection to my best.
All the drivers are updated for both Ethernet adaptors.
As of now, as soon as the connection stops, I restart the computer, I get internet access back for 8 min, than bam, stops, restart, I get the internet, 8 mins later connection drops. Restart,. access for about 8min than drops, restart and repeat. (two web browsers used in this test Firefox and IE)
If I hook up my router, and split two cables to both systems, my mac always has a connection but my PC drops it and the only way I can get it back is to restart the PC.

All drivers are current with no hardware issues present in Device Manager.

ISSUE:
Web pages will not load nor can I see other computers/devices on my network when connected wirelessly. I can ping any address with no issues. System shows I have internet access. I have tried with 3 different browsers to no avail. I can't even load my router's internal web page.  I have searched and read hundreds of posts by people who have/had similar problems but nothing has solved this problem or even shown an improvement.

When I connect via ethernet cable, I have absolutely no issues whatsoever. When I unplug, I still am able to connect wirelessly to my network, I just can't do anything..

I have 3 other computers on my home network. I also have various other devices connected via my router including a Roku, several cell phones, etc. all of which work flawlessly.

I have seen where the wireless drivers from manufacturers are not the best especially if it is a Dell intel wireless driver. In Device Manager right click the Wireless adapter and select Properties. Under the details tab select Hardware IDs. Post the first line.

I tried to install a router yesterday (Trendnet) and got an error message from my computer and the installation wasn't completed. I shut down my computer and tried again, got same error message (forgot to write the code down). So I put the cables back on my modem and now I have internet connection but no web pages will load. It worked perfectly fine before trying to setup the router. I called my internet provider and we did a few things such as typing ping www.yahoo.com, shutting off the modem, etc. but nothing worked. They say its a problem with my computer not the server. I don't know what to do, especially that the router didn't get completely setup. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Just troubleshooted a XPSP2 laptop with a linksys Wireless-G card and eventually got to the point where I can use the Windows wireless instead of the linksys network manager. However, even after connecting with a "Excellent" strength connection, IE v6 won't load pages. It just keeps loading bar by bar on the bottom and eventually just stops, without even a 404 error. Guessing its not a hardware issue since its connecting and showing excellent strength, any ideas?

Hello, my computer gets to the black Windows XP load screen with the loading bar and it just stays there, loading and loading and loading. All the safe modes and last known good config don't work either, they just get stuck loading.
I haven't installed any new hardware or software, and there was no BSOD. this just happened suddenly one day with no prior warning, and now I can't access my pictures and music and such.
I tried to repair from the Windows XP CD and it also just gets stuck and does nothing.
If you need specs, tell me.

Please help me and thank you.

Hi doubt and welcome to TSF
Can you start in Safe Mode?
Tap F8 repeatedly whilst the computer is first starting and it will give you the option to start in Safe Mode. See if that is any quicker or if it's the same and post back.

Edit: Just seen that you have checked Safe Mode. Have you got your XP CD?

I have look around this forum some, but I am extremely tired from staying up all night trying to figure out what is wrong! I have a Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop running windows 7 home premium 64bit. This all started when I click on my google chrome and seen the home page was dosearches.com, so I tried to look up how to remove the search engine and get back my google one, then, the next thing I know everything I tried to search would just repeat in an endless loop.. I cannot download anything from a browser, I have tried MANY DIFFERENT suggestions that I've read, but none work. Idk what to do and I just really need some help.. I don't want to have to buy a new computer. Thanks in advance for anyone attempting to help me.. Any help is appreciated. Btw I am typing this from my mobile phone so replays may be delayed a bit.

A:No browsers will load pages, even with strong DSL connection!:(

By the way I did a clean install of window 7 home premium earlier today.. Leads me to believe its a connection problem with browsers.. Internet says connected but it's still not loading them and I assume any other problem would of been wiped away just like my harddrive

This happened abruptly. One minute it was working fine then just nothing.

I've done the winstock reset which worked and I able to browse anything quickly as normal. But every time you had to reset it when you turned the PC on. Now resetting the winstock won't get me back online. Done DNS flush and the ip config as well. deleted bonjour and adobe flash player that wasn't working as well... Deleted winstock reg files and replaced them.

Any ideas thanks!

Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here,

My XP laptop will not open some web pages while sharing an internet connection. Internet explorer is able to open some pages that Firefox won't, but both are hit-or-miss on some pages.

I have three computers that are sharing an internet connection. The host is and old IBM running Windows 98 with ICS. It is connected to the internet through an external Creative Modem Blaster dial-up. It connects to my home network with an internal Netgear NIC. The NIC connects to a wireless router, a D-Link WGT624. The Host has Windows 98, ICS, TightVNC, and Deep Freeze installed, and nothing else. It's IP address is fixed at 192.168.0.1. This machine has the DHCP server active.

The wireless router's IP address is fixed at 192.168.0.2. Its DHCP server is disabled.

One of the clients is a Windows 98 HP machine. It connects to the home network with an internal Netgear NIC through a Netgear switch and then to the D-Link Router. Its IP address is fixed at 192.168.0.3. This machine has no problem accessing any page on the internet through the ICS host, either with IE or Firefox.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite running XP. I've tried all kinds of things, but it's configuration right now is as follows: the wireless adapter's IP address is fixed at 192.168.0.4; it's NIC (wired) address is fixed at 192.168.0.5. The XP firewall is on, but I have tried turning it off with no positive results. The machine also has Norton Antivirus software on it, but I've trie... Read more

Hi I really need someones help,
I have recently moved home after living on my own. Whilst in my own house i was using Sky Broadband. Since moving home i have had to get a Belkin network card and arial. I couldn't get any connection at all, so i called Belkin and have managed to get a connection to my parents router.

However, when i try to load a page it says:

"Address not found
Firefox can't find the sserver www.google.co.uk

The browser could not find the host server to the provided address
Did you make a mistake when typing the domain?
Are you certain the domain exists?
Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings
is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?Incorrect settings can interfere with web browsing."
Before moving out i had a connection using a Belkin wireless card and Arial.

I have tried turning my firewall off and this still doesn't work. I have also tried to use IE and this comes up with a similar error?

What culd it be? Can someone please help me i'm going out of my mind!

Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hi... I am having problems with my internet connection. Every few days my connection fails. When I try to connect to my browser (Google) I get an error page telling me the page could not be Displayed, there are a couple of options I should try, and a button that states "Fix Connection Problems". When I click on this button another screen is displayed and this shows the computer is trying to resolve the connection problem. it then displays another screen the problems found and solved but there is a part that tells me that there is a problem with my DSN or is it DNS??? server connection which could not be resolved. It list a couple of things to try including re booting my Wireless Hub (BT Home). When I tried this my connection is restored but only lasts about two days. Is there a more permanent solution as it is frustrating.
