No Taskbar, Beeping Comp, Cannot Use All Comp Resources

Q: No Taskbar, Beeping Comp, Cannot Use All Comp Resources

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. Any further help would be appreciated.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 11:37:30 AM, on 8/7/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: Safe modeRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeO2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dllO2 - BHO: (no name) - {2F364306-AA45-47B5-9F9D-39A8B94E7EF7} - (no file)O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dllO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /autoO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimizedO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /backgroundO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /backgroundO4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1801674531-789336058-1708537768-500\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background (User '?')O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1801674531-789336058-1708537768-500\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User '?')O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\npjpi150_06.dllO9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\npjpi150_06.dllO9 - Extra button: Research - {92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\REFIEBAR.DLLO9 - Extra button: @btrez.dll,-4015 - {CCA281CA-C863-46ef-9331-5C8D4460577F} - C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\btsendto_ie.htmO9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @btrez.dll,-12650 - {CCA281CA-C863-46ef-9331-5C8D4460577F} - C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\btsendto_ie.htmO9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exeO9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exeO23 - Service: avast! Preferred Solution: No Taskbar, Beeping Comp, Cannot Use All Comp Resources

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys, i have a problem with this stupid HP computer of mine...The main problem is that it keeps freezing/crashing! and sometimes it restarts itself... every once in a while the cpu would beep and my comp will start having a mind of its own coz it opens google and searches for QYTREW and sometimes it opens qytrew.net???? i have no idea why, that page doesnt even exist! What's more annoying is that it sometimes go into my system setup when i first start the comp and it tries to change the date!I have followed you Preperation Guide but the thing is that my comp would freeze everytime it gets scanned... i tried Housecall, Panda, and my own AVG... it also freezed when i tried McAffe Stinger... the only thing that i can use it my Spybot search and destroy *sigh*On the days when this comp doesnt beep, it freezes. I rarely shut it down anymore coz it freezes all the time...Anyways here's a screen shot of the error report microsoft gave me after my comp just restarted it self:and here is my HJT Log:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 7:45:02 p.m., on 8/02/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Sygat... A:Comp Keeps Freezing And Restarting And Beeping!

Yep, you have a bugger there. However, I doubt that's the source of your problem. I would like to see if any other startups are involved. To do this, I need to see another type of log please. Go here and download Silent Runners.vbs to a new folder on your Desktop (Clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As") and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (make sure you wait for the popups please) Please post the information back in this thread too (you may need to make a couple of posts). If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

For some reason, whenever I open Yahoo messenger, it sucks the hell out of my resources. I have almost a gig of ram, and even with nothing opened or running, yahoo messeneger will suck up to 97% of my resources, and continue to suck at that rate for no apparant reason. This is with NO other programs or services running, and even right after a reboot. With no files being sent, the cam not in use, just being opened, it sucks the resources.
It doesn't do this everytime, but I'd say about 90% of the time I open the program. I've no idea why. I dodn't have a viri, the HJThis is clean, it just sucks the hell out of my resources for no apparant reason.
Does anyone have a reason why, and maybe a possible fix for this?
Also, is there some way I can limit the resources any one program can use? This is REALLY driving me crazy, as the majority of the people I speak to everyday are in my yahoo messenger list. But opening Yahoo and letting it run, makes my comp just crawl.

The image shows it, right after a reboot and being the only thing running, using 96% of my resources.

Any and all help greatly appreciated!

I have been reading on different sites to download different anti-spyware programs. Right now I have:

1. Ad-aware
2. Spybot
3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert
5. Spyware Blaster
6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert
8. Hosts Xpert
9. Windows Defender

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

With that in mind...I was wondering what the computer "gurus" think is the best way I can optimize my computer? If you have a lot of experience, then what would/do you do, and what do you download for your comp? What programs should I download or buy? I'm willing to pay money for programs that I can buy at the store or pay to activate full versions of trial software, etc. if it will help optimize my computer or help my computer's speed. My system specifications are at the bottom of this ... Read more

Well dude.. i would just go with ad aware.. it wont really slow the comp down

somthing activly scanning such as norton avast etc.. will slow your comp down by taking resources... just go with a scanner like adaware that doesnt use resources..

EDIT: Norton sucks... seriously

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

alright were havin a little problem first let me tell you about the two computers:

Computer A: Windows XP Home Edition
Has the Cable modem connected to it
Has the router connected to it
512mb ram

Computer B: Windows 98SE
Being Wirelessly connected to the xp computer

Ok well i know i have my network set up because a) i went through the XP computer, and The 98SE computer is getting an internet connection and finally C) because the XP can connect to the 98SE but not visa versa

Now every time im on the 98SE computer and i try to connect to the XP comp i get this "Resource: \\MAIN\IPC$" Then its askin for a password, ive tried every single password ive known it wotn connect, i have even made an account exactly the same as the 98SE computer on the XP computer. IE (this is true) The windows 98SE computer has a username of Default and password - nothing. So i went to the XP connection, i made an account named Default and in the password field put nothing. I dont know what else to do ive tried everything plz help soon!!!

A:problem connecting 98SE comp to Xp comp but not visa versa

On the XP machine:
1) Is the firewall turned off? If you have SP2 it is turned on by default.
2) Have you shared any folders yet?

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wi-fi
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)
I'd really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions. End result: When I click a computer to ... Read more

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

Hi,

Recently had a virus on my computer. Had to take it to the geek squad to get it fixed. Brought it home the other day and it would not connect to my wireless network (I am on the other laptop in my house that does still connect). It would connect before I got it "fixed". I brought it back to the store the next day and they tried a few things. I will connect to their wireless in the store.

I originally had Geek Squad come out earlier this year to set up my wireless router and the guy who helped me at the store said it might be because of a certain way he set my computer up to connect to the router which got erased when my computer had to be restored.

Now they want to charge me an extra $89 for them to come back out to the house and fix it.

Is there anything I can do to try to fix this myself without forking over even more money?

I just got a new computer with Windows 7.

My old computer has Windows XP on it.

I need to get all my old saved Incredimail mail from my old computer to my new one.

I just dont know how.

Here is what I have done so far...

Installed Incredimail on my new computer with Win 7.

I then looked online to find out where the back up files for Incredimail emails are and found them on my Win XP comp. I then downloaded that file to a flash drive thinking I could find the same file on my computer with Win 7.

The pathways are supposed to be:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\IM\Identities\
or
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\IM\Identities\

I was able to find the second one on my XP Computer. But when I went to transfer the file to my Win 7 Computer, I could not find the appropriate folder. There IS no Documenst and Settings. Nor is there a an IM or Identities folder.

What do I do?

I REALLY need to have these old messages. There is some very important info I need to have.

Thanks!

Ok, I read a bit about x32 bit and x64 bit. From what I read it was saying that x64 bit would run the process of program and memory faster then x32 bit, but I would lose some programs that's not compatible with it. I'm actually unsure if that is true really but some people did recommend for gamers or such if you want to run program faster. ( besides rams and such)

At this moment, I have Window XP SP3 ( 32 bit ) and i want to stick with XP, so I would have to downgrade to window SP2.

What I would like to know is, can I run x64 bit window XP SP2 on my comp?
and can anyone clarified what I wrote about the x32 and x64 bit is true?

Just to note, my Processor is:

Intel (R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80 GHz
2.79 GHz, 1.00 GB of ram

I recently upgaded my aging computer with the following components:

New MSI motherboard, capable of socketing a Pentium 4(Which I have) and the option to upgrade to a Core2Duo.
X1900XT from a 6800GS
2GB of DDR2 from 1GB
500W Cooler Master powersupply

Now I figured I would get a good jump in performance in games, and it did... but could my CPU be bottlenecking my GPU at all? It doesn't seem like I'm getting that much better performance than my other computers at the same resolution(1280x1024)

Athlon 64 3000+ @2.0ghz
X800XT
1GB DDR400

Would I get a really big boost in gaming performance if I switched to a E6300 or E6400?(Core 2 Duo)
BTW, my newer computer's P4 is clocked at 3.2Ghz.

i reformated and i was trying to get my internet to work but i dont knoe what happen but my comp freezes and iuno wtf to do? can u help me anyone? i cant open up the start menu after McAfee runs then comp freezes

A:I need help with my comp!

The first thing I'd try is to boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly press the F8 key during the boot process; when you get to the Boot Menu, select Safe Mode) and disable McAfee from loading on startup. Then reboot into Normal Mode and if that solves the problem, either reinstall McAfee or uninstall it and try an alternate antivirus program.

Hello.. if you read the introduction forum then you know im new here im looking for help as well as to give it where i can. so my problem is that games and other apps randomly close on my computer and i have found it rather frustrating. i just can't seem to figure it out and no one seems to be able to come up with a similar solution... another part of my problem is that when i put a CD/DVD the auto play on the dvd or CD is supposed to begin running but it doesn't i have to go and do it manually... it seems like the problem is all in the CD/DVD rom drive or the driver. i know nothing is wrong with my registry cause i got CCleaner and it keeps my registry nice and free of junk or bad things thanks for your help

A:My Win XP comp

My suggestion is more of a last resort, so I would wait for someone who knows of a simpler solution. Anyways here goes:I'm going to guess that you had these problems after running the registry cleaner program. I suspect that the registry cleaner has done more damage than good. There are a number of posts on this forum that recommend against using them, including this thread:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/179604/registry-cleaning/So, if using a registry cleaner really is the cause, then you can assume that the registry has been corrupted. In that case, you are looking at a Windows reinstall (and all of the critical updates). If you can pinpoint when these problems started, it might help determine the cause, if it is something else.

im running windows xp and have no clue about the specifications about my comp.i want to know which graphics card i have and stuff like that.please can someone help me out.

thx

A:comp help

To find your system specs (ram, processor, etc)

Right click my computer. The following info is displayed: Your OS, Who it is registered to, product code, Computer Model, Processor Manufacurer, Processor Speed (eg 2.0Ghz), amount of Ram Installed (eg 512MB).

To find out your harware config (eg model of sound/graphics card):

Right click my computer, select hardware tab, click device manager, it will display each and every device on ur comp (except hidden ones). To find out the Graphics Card Model for example, click the little + sign next to Display Adapters, for example the make on my comp is a ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 Series adapter card.

To find other models click the + sign next to the relevant title eg, Keyboards, or Mice etc.

HTH

Bye!
