I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

my pc is so slow in internet browsing and gaming because of high disk usage.

i tried everything disabling show me tips about windows and superfetch, changing virtual memory, scanning for virus.

and then i found out page file caused the high disk usage so i disable it, then my pc became so fast and no high disk usage but i keep getting low memory error and crashes even though i'm only using 60%-70% of my ram.

so i checked resource monitor and found out more than half of my ram goes to standby and only 1 mb in free

so is there anyway to disable standby memory?

A:page file causes high disk usage and making my pc slow

I would let windows manage your physical memory and page file it's very good at that and put the page file back it can be important for physical memory allocation sometimes .

Windows 10 page file to ram compression allocated size is insignificant anyway .

You didn't mention if all this web browser drama was during multitasking ,what browser and how many tabs open or what other conditions are present like GTA 5 which can use up a decent Core X or AMD FX CPU on high settings ? all these variables can even stall (nearly so ) my Haswell core i5 @ 8 GB ram on an SDD if taken to an extreme .

OTOH an SSD with a windows boot drive would be a stonking good upgrade on a core i3,i5,i7 ,AMD FX or any PC (even on an old PC with only 300 GB/s SATA II maximums and move things along considerably faster with less stalling and hanging , rember also that SSD will speed up any data written to or cached to the SDD or fetched off a metal HDD like this Haswell Core i5 Sata III 6GB/s dual boot PC in my specs ,yours is ofc SATA III 6 GB/s potential also but not anthing close to half of that on metal here is my SDD I/O :

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

Hi to evryone who attempts to help me with this issue. Ok. So i opened up task manager and noticed that my page file usage is real high although im not doing anything. I restarted my pc, opened task manager, sat back and watched. The memory usage just keep on climbing up to over 3gb. This is insane, i have no programs runing besides what usually starts up with a normal pc. When this happens i get a message saying im low on virtual memory windows is increasing it. I cant even surf the web for to long before memory runs out and my chrome or internet explorer would crash. I really could use the help. If anyone wishes to help i could give some more info on my pc. Just so u know i never had this problem before.Another thing is my physical ram is freed whem i close a program but not the virtual memory. I chose to let windows manage the virtual memory because no matter how i set costum size it gets all used up. If its a memory leak or virus i could use the help because i cant fix these thing on my own.

Hi,
My computer is using 310mb of Pagefile while just writing this note. I have 1.66GB free RAM and it is using the pagefile. Shall I just turn it off and force it to use the RAM instead? Any input would be great.
Thanking In Advance
Jack-O-Bytes.

A:High Page File Usage

That is normal. Even though you have free ram, the page file is still used.

As for turning it OFF, I would not do that. Some apps check for a page file and will refuse to run/install if it is not found.

If you are not having any other problems, then I would just leave it alone.

I recently upgraded from 256K to 2GB of memory. While I was in there I blew out the whole case with safe canned air. When I rebooted, the system booted to the OS then completely shut off. It did this three times when I rebooted. I let it sit for an hour and tried again. This time it ran fine. Now, it runs slow. The task manager says that I am using 1.8GB of PF Usage or more constantly. Is this the source of my slow processing? Any help greatly appreciated. I'm running XP.

First of all, I have a Sony Vaio computer around 7 years old with Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz 512MB RAM running Windows XP Service Pack 2.

My page file usuage becomes unusally high whenever I get on the internet. For example, I tried downloading Service Pack 3 and the PF Usuage shows 1.3 GB with the download stuck at 2% (going around 15 kB/s when I have a 3 mB/s internet speed) Also, I try watching streaming videos (which before ran uninterrupted) and now the videos will play for 15 seconds then just stop and freeze.

I have even done a System Recovery where I put in 3 CDs (which afterwards also means this is not a virus or spam problem). I've defragmented all my hard drives. I've increased my page file to around 3 GB using the virtual memory. I've downloaded the Windows Updates. But none of these methods worked.

I also noticed my computer doesn't stand by anymore. It just freezes on the screen Preparing to Standby but never does actually standby. I then have to turn off my computer by holding down the power button and then restart it.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Page File Usage High

With 512MB of RAM installed...you should expect pagefile usage to be high. The pagefile is there to augment memory on systems with less-than-optimum amounts of RAM installed. It's not an efficient technique, but it's better than nothing. The optimum suggestion would be to increase the RAM installed amount.<<I've downloaded the Windows Updates.>>If you have SP2 installed...that means that you are currently lacking over 100 critical updates since SP2.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480 plus all the critical updates issued since SP3 itself (quite a few).Have you checked the system for malware recently?Louis

I did not understand this that if ram is available then why is mine page file being used.

A:High page file usage when RAM is available

Under "My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>Advanced" Look at "Memory Usage" and see which is ticked (either Programs or System cache).

Whichever one is ticked, change it to the other & see if that makes a difference. Check what your pagefile usage to memory usage ration is just before hand.

Might have to reboot for the change to take effect (if any).

Post back if it works, I'm making this up as I go along here, and would like to know if it works.

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

Hey guys, first off hats off to all you people who help others with computer issues in their spare time.

Ok firstly il give you the specs:

3.06 Ghz Pentium 4, 512 Ram, XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 3.

I use Bit Defender total security (which I have had problems with sometimes) and have scanned for malware, virus's etc and found nothing. I have also formatted my computer within the last 6 months. I also have plenty of space on C: and D: .

Here is a screen of Task Manager:

(note, I have just messed around with the page file usage, switching a lot of the memory onto my external hard drive, however this doesn't seem to make a difference and my computer still grinds to a sludge with little programmes running)

Here are the processes:

These screenshots are within 5 mins of startup, and I haven't opened any programmes up apart from Chrome and Hijack.

Most of the time the commit charge is like 1500000 with my physical memory being 512mb obv. But what I don't understand is why my computer thinks it needs to use up all the RAM and all the page file memory!!

For the past like year my computer has been spiking with the CPU and the page file usage is always near to full, I receive the "Virtual Memory too low" warning on a fair few occasions too.

A:Page file usage rediculous, commit charge high....And can't find solution!!!! :(

first of all, having a page file on an external drive is going to be slow. way slower than any internal drive. second of all nowadays you should let windows manage your page file. third of all, if you do set a custom page file, allow it to grow dynamically as it is needed.

remove windows desktop search, unless you use it and really need it.

Well I've been noticing everytime I start to play my music on, I can hear the music become slower and then it would go back to normal, then slow again. I checked the windows task manager to see whats causing the slowness and nothing seems to be the problem. Yet I see the performance cpu usage jumping constantly with out any programs running. I followed the intructions before this entire process and nothing seemed to help. I thought It was the browser and switched to Orca and it still had the same impact. My computer is old and outdated but it was working perfectly before, I dont play any games on my computer, I just listen to music, use guitarpro, internet, and thats pretty much it. So hopefully This works out and thank you for your time.

I'm having a problem with incredibly high CPU usage even if nothing is on. I can't watch any videos as everything stutters. Also, my computer restart takes longer than it ever has before right now. For the cause, I think it may have been from either one of two torrents i may have downloaded from a private tracker but in both instances, no-one else complained of similiar problems. I have run the windows diaganostic tool (by pressing F12? when the computer starts) and found no errors; I uninstalled the microsoft security essentials and installed a trial version of Kaspersky and ran it in safe mode but found nothing. I also ran spybot (not in safe mode) and found a few spyware but nothing that helped.

Also, I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but when i restarted my computer once, I received a black screen that said "XB _ _ ATA error" and that's it. It never happened again but it just worried me.

Lastly, i don't know if this is important either but file "wuauclt.exe" is in my processes and it appears in the beginning when I start my computer and the dissappears. I've heard this has to do with windows update but it still worried me as it was taking up 50k or so of memory at the beginning of my startup.

For a while my parent's computer has been very slow, and CPU goes up to 100% each time we want to access a folder, open a browser, etc. and it sometimes even happens that the computer shuts down with no warning and reboots by itself.

I have increased the RAM but it didn't solved the problem. I suggested them to defrag the hard drive and to clean registry with CCleaner on regular basis. Spybot and Avast are installed, I have cleaned the system with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware. I uninstalled most of the useless programs they had installed on it. I also removed all dust from the machine, and Core Temp indicates me that the processor temperature is never that high (around 38).

However, nothing of the above mentioned solved the problem, and I am running out of ideas.

If anybody out there could offer any advice, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you very much.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to read this.

My computer is running very slowly and the memory usage is high without the processes using the memory being represented in task manager. It claims a mem usage of 256000k when the processes shown in task manager total less than 100000k.

I know that too many programs are running at start up, how would i safely abridge them?

I took a snapshot using hijackthis:

Hi there, I'm a noob to this site... and I need help!

Lately, my computer has been running very slowly. For example, if I minimize a window, the desktop will "refresh" (I'm not sure if that's the right word) line by line as opposed to all at once. I chalked this up to having too much stuff on my computer, but I figured that going through the processes and registry to check for trojans, etc. wouldn't really hurt.

I looked up some of the processes that I saw and found that quite a few of them were malware, so I DLed HJT and ran it. That log is as follows.

I'd like to get my computer back the way it used to be -- please help!! I hope I've provided enough info to start working on the problem(s), but I'll be checking back here very often. Thanks in advance!

I thought it was our internet but have since added different devices that run off of internet as well and they are fast. Computer is slow even when not using the internet. I just noticed that my cpu is staying up at or close to 100%. I ran malwarebytes and it removed over 550 potentional threats. CPU is still the same after. I am attaching system information and hijackthis log. Please let me know if you see something that could be causing this problem.

First thanks for helping a newbie.  I took my family computer off to college and it was almost too slow to use.  I started trying to clean it up.  I ran combofix and malbytes malware both in safemode. Combofix removed a couple of things, and everytime I run malwarebytes it comes up with the same 34 errors. "pup.conduit.a" if I recall correctly.  I then ran hitman something.  All advice I have been taking from other's posts.  I am now making my own because I have plateaued.  The computer is now Usable but still takes so long to bootup and open programs.  Once it gets going it is now "ok" but even with no user programs running other than my antivirus my physical ram memory stays above 80.  It doesn't matter what I close or disable.  Im using AVG for my av. I put my pc in the windows performance mode or whatever that takes away some of the fancy graphics.  I am running in performance mode in my avg pc tune up program.  I disabled everything I could.   No change. I deleted all programs that are unnecessary and defragded multiple times.  I also ran cc cleaner and slim cleaner.  Thank you for you patience and help.

Hi all,
following problem:

My computer is running very slow.  It happened suddenly from one day to another.

I checked for a virus or similar with Malwarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy and AVG. Nothing was found (checked it by time to time with the new updates but the same result).

The Task Manager showed that only 1,5 of 4 GB RAM are used. The CPU is at nearly 0%. That seems not to be a problem.
But when I open the Ressource Manager it shows that my hard disk has 100% time with maximal activity without writing much (most of the time: nothing). While being inactive (I am doing nothing except viewing the Ressource Manager) there are some tasks which bother me (mainly svchost local service network restricted). Sometimes they go away and the computer is working properly, sometimes not. Another important point is that the answering time of the tasks who are doing smth with my hard disk are often over 5000 (the record was 16.000).
Even if my computer is working nearly properly (you can work but need to wait for each website 2 minutes and for a program to start nearly 5 minutes) you often see the "no response" (don't know how it is called in english, sorry for that!) at the upper window of the program.

I started this thread at first but it was advised to me that I post here.

Hello,

My computer runs slow at times and sometimes freezes as well. My computer is dual-processor, 1.80ghz 3.50 gb of ram
I've noticed that when I play games online my cpu usage is at 100%. The game takes up about 50% and then a 15% of ativawcui. The system also takes 40%
All of these numbers fluctuate to make a 100% cpu usage. I've used the eset online scanner and didn't find a virus, AVG, spybot and i've tried cleaning the computer up by deleting temp files, disk defrag and nothing seems to work. Please help me or I will have to probablly find a new computer.

Here's my hijackthis log i don't know if this is what's needed. If any other information is needed please ask! I'm ready to get this fixed

I'm trying to help my husband with his computer since he's been getting increasingly frustrated with it. The CPU is running at 100% most of the time, and his programs are locking up, especially iTunes. I tried to run all of the programs listed in the sticky thread, but I didn't have much luck. I tried the DDS program, but the files did not open up at the end. So I ran the RSIT program that I read about in another thread. I couldn't get the GMER program to work at all. It kept freezing, even when I hadn't touched anything. I tried it several times.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Hi A few months ago I noticed my desk top PC was slow and taking longer than normal to open web pages. When Task Master is launched I notice the CPU usage goes up to 100% while web pages try to load or a program is launched. Often the download process will "freeze" and the PC is unresponsive while the usage stays at 100%. On ocassions the PC will "crash" while the CPU usage is at 100%. I have no idea what is likely to have caused this problem i.e. whether the problem is a reult of Malware/Rootkit infection or a hardware component [CPU] malfunction. As a starting point I have followed the instructions contained in the Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help, downloading and running the following:1 DeFogger program [ CD Emulation programs if any have been disabled]2 DDS3 GMERScan results for DDS and GMER are attached. When running GMER not only was the CPU usage constantly at 100% but the scan would "freeze" for a period before continuing. Needless to say it took some time to complete the scan.If it is of any help basic details of my system are :Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3Celeron ® CPU 2.8 GHz. 1.00 GB of RAMObviously, I am keen to identify the cause of this problem in order to return the PC to a more functional state. Problem began a week ago. I left a couple sites up overnight, nothing that seemed dangerous. My email, a professional site, and a word doc. Following day, my computer was virtually unusable. Ran AVG, Ad-aware, and malware-bytes in safe mode. Ad-Aware found and removed one object, but not much difference. Defragged and removed a few programs, but with no effect. Memory usage seems to be much higher than normal, with system using 119,000 k. Not sure what to do at this point. My email address at hotmail keeps saying "we can't connect to hotmail. Please check that your system is connected." Google searches are timing out, or saying that it is not connected. This all began in one day and is only getting worse. I posted in a different topic area but got no responses in almost a week. Thought I might post here. Please help, I have a lot of work to get done and feel crippled the way my computer is right now

Welcome to BC.The first thing you need to do is to identify the process causing the high CPU utilization and where it is running from. Windows Task Manager does not provide enough information. These are tools to investigate running processes, services and gather additional information to identify them or resolve problems:Process ExplorerSystem ExplorerProcessHacker - (requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or above to use)AnVir TaskManager FreeAutorunsProcess MonitorWindows Service CommandersvchostViewerThese tools will provide information about each process, CPU usage, file description and its path location. Most of them are stand-alone apps in a zip file so no installation is necessary.-- System Explorer provides a security check of running processing using their online security database when you first launch the program. Just press the Security Scan tab at the top, then click Start Security Check. After the check you can click the link to See the results of the security check >>. Keep in mind, that the check is not a guarantee of what is or is not detected as malware. -- Process Explorer shows two panes by default: the upper pane is always a process list and the bottom pane either shows the list of DLLs loaded into the process selected in the upper pane, or the list of operating system resource handles (files, Registry keys, synchronization objects) the process has open. Hi sorry I could not get back to last couple of days. Anyhow I used Firefox and was able to download DDS (for some reason Chrome would not download that). I also deactivated my CD drive with DeFrogger, then ran a DDS scan (at the bottom you will the txt), and ran GMER. GMER stalled as usual, then took your suggestion and unchecked the three additional boxes(Devices, Sections and Files). GMER did not find any modifications, was the end message. I am attaching the DDS scan. Should I activate the CD driver using the DeFrogger Thanks.

OK I'm running Windows XP, SP3 with Norton Antivirus, with plenty of onboard RAM (3GB). My problem began about 2 weeks ago. Not sure whether this is relevant, but after turning off my computer for about a week while away for the holidays, I turned it on and un-installed the MS Office 2010 free-trial Click-to-Run application. I don't think my computer had successfully uploaded new virus definitions that day, and I recall there was a Windows Update error in the lower right of the screen that I didn't address. At any rate, after un-installing the Office 2010 trial software & rebooting, my problems began, and I'm at my wits end to figure out how to fix it.

Using Process Explorer, I can see that services.exe is utilizing around 80% of the CPU pretty much all the time, even in Safe Mode. Double-clicking on services.exe in Process Explorer and looking at the Threads tab, it looks like the main CPU users are unpnpmgr.dll (associated with plug-and-play) and various kernel32.dll threads. I have run "sfc /scannow", and I ran several malware scans (Norton & ESET found nothing but Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware did find & fix some things like MyWebSearch and quite a few Adware items), and I've run COMODO registry cleaner. I am not able to run Device Manager - I'm not sure why.

If I check my hdd on bootup, it fails & returns an error 7. Not sure if this is reliable though, since I've run chkdsk several times & don't seem t... Read more

and I've run COMODO registry cleaner. Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove ent... Read more

Hi there,
I've noticed after an hour or two of using my work computer, the CPU usage goes up. I looked at the task manager and don't see anything 'big' eating up the usage. I'm running Win XP Pro (off a server), and have Symantec Antivirus 9.0 . ExpressClick Yes was installed by our contracted IT guy to fix an Outlook problem. We recently defragged the computer, that did not change the problem. I ran Spybot S&D, Adaware SE, (got some DSO exploits) and ran a housecall scan (nothing detected there).

Hmmmm....nothing jumping out there......

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

Hi,

Computer is slow at times, and when looking at the processes within the Task Manager - theirs alot of 'ipconfig.exe' processes and/or 'svchost.exe', i'm guessing they are the cause of the CPU being high (infact so high can cause the computer to completely freeze and become unresponsive).

Due to the slowness, I was unable to do a full gmer scan - it would freeze when attempting too (theirfore followed the alternative instructions and only scaned the 'Sections' within the 'C:\' drive => http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...tions_only.png).

It is likely that most malware are removed from running all the scans that was directed by the moderator, however, my computer still retains high memory usage even when no windows are open except for a chrome tab and the resource monitor.
I'm running on 4GB RAM.

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

A:High RAM Usage and slow running computer

Looking at your task manager you have several chrome instances. If I remember right Chrome opens a new instance for every tab. It also doesnt shut down cleanly when you exit. I bet if you close the 1 chrome tab that is open you still have several instances in task manager.

Reboot your PC and report your usage after a reboot without opening Chrome.

Every since two days ago, my computer has slowed to a crawl. My entire computer experience is choppy and video playback is completely out of the question. At the bottom of my task manager it says my CPU usage is 100%, but the numbers don't add up... see for yourself.I haven't tried another OS besides 7, but I did do a clean install (onto one of my two partitions on the disk, but I only kept a folder of backup files on the other partition), yet the problem persisted.
