Preferred Solution: Avast and Windows Update can't connect to update server

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have finished doing the anniversary updates and all went ok. However yesterday being Tuesday I went to the Windows Update section to do any updates that were available and kept of getting a reply could not connect to the update server.

All of my other computers that had the anniversary update can still connect to the update server, but this one computer for some strange reason will not connect to the update server.

I have disabled Windows Defender as well as Malwarebytes and still it will not connect to the update server. The internet is working just fine, so that can't be the problem.

Any idea's what could be going on here...

As the title indicates, I'm unable to connect to Microsoft's server to download anymore updates. As this computer belongs to a friend I don't know any history. I've scanned the drive using AVG and Ad-aware AE. I can successfully launch Windows IE and navigate to Microsoft, so I know I have Internet connectivity.

My apologies. This issue is a side effect of the resolution of another one solved earlier. I didn't read something in the notes carefully enough. Thanks to all who read and/or replied.

My automatic update for windows is turned on but it doesn't update. When I try to do it manually it says it can not establish a connection to the update server. It tells me to check my internet connection and try again but I can get on the internet and download things just fine; same thing is said when I try to update through my laptop or even try to register my Windows or my laptop after I wiped it and reinstalled windows. Everything else for my internet is working and my antivirus updates fine... any suggestions?

hey there!

Well my problem is this ... sometimes when im searching google and click a link, i get redirected to a random page. My normal scans dont show any problems, but i have seen that quite alot of people have a similar problem.

gmer.exe kept on giving me a blue screen then shutting my computer down, so ill put what i think is the initial scan in a zip along with 'attach.txt'

Thanks alot in advance for any help!

I'd like to try to get a more detailed log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Let's try this version of gmer. It will be a randomly named executable.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have troubles, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

For a couple days now, I havent been able to update Avast or Windows Update. I tried reinstalling Avast but it did not help. I have tried everything. I scanned my PC with every major malware program but they don't detect anything. What should I do?

I'm too scared to reinstall Windows 7. However, I will if I need too. I also want to format my disk in the process. How could I do this?

Also, I am scared that I wont be able to find the drivers I need for my GPU and such if I reinstall and format my disk. Where can I find these drivers?

Sorry about the messy text, this was sent from my ipod touch.

A:Can't update Avast or Windows Update... Desperately need help ASAP

If you do reinstall, use this a guide: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Drivers can be found almost anywhere provided you know the name of the hardware you're using. The best idea is to go to the manufacturers website, as they will have the most up to date drivers.

If you want to do a middle-ground between a clean install and not reinstalling, you can do a repair install: Repair Install

But, chances are someone knows how to fix this so what a little while longer before doing anything drastic.

hello friend..

I cannot update windows 10 to anniversary update. Every time I check for update, this came out

"We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet."

I am connected to internet, Mozilla firefox is ok, utorrent is ok, everything is fine except windows update.
I have try disable the firewall, turn off windows defender, disable antivirus, none of it work.
I downloaded windows10 update assistant, did not work.
I don't know what is blocking windows update form connecting to internet.

Any suggestion? or perhaps solution.

Thank You.

Windows 7 64-bit, so no GMER log. I believe I got the infection [not sure what it is] from a flash drive i brought home from work.
Basically I cannot update my AVAST, so I downloaded MBAM and that won't download updates either. I tried running RKILL before Avast but then i got about 20 pop-ups from avast saying that an 'explorer.exe' located in a local/temp/ directory was being sandboxed. So before I try anything I'm posting here. Didn't run combofix. Didnt' run anything other than AVAST with 0603-00 virii definitions and the avast mbr cleaner [turned up nothing]

So I am finally going to update my Touch to 3.0 (from 2.2.1). I connected it to my PC and opened iTunes. However, when I click "Update" it instantly says it can't connect to the update server because I have no internet connection. But as you can see, I do.

I vaguely remember this happening once before, and it had something to do with a setting in Internet Explorer (or Internet Options in Control Panel). I have done a couple of Google searches, but I cannot find where it says to change the setting. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I did do a search on Apple's website about this, and they said to check the Automaticly Detect Settings under LAN settings... I did that, but it didn't help.

A:iTunes cannot connect to update server. Need Help

Ok, I am not too sure how I fixed it, but I am currently downloading the 3.0 software. The ONLY change I made was on my Touch's Sync window, I went to the Applications tab and checked "Sync Applications" (because I wasn't able to sync apps from itunes to my touch). So after I synced the apps I kept looking around the net for a place to download it outside of iTunes. I followed a link on Apple's site, and, as usual, it opened iTunes... but this time IT WORKED!

Window 7 x64 pc with Avast virus
Notice the issue yesterday, not sure how long it might have been affecting Firefox.
Yesterday, Avast could no longer access server to update.  Went to Avast website to manually download virus file.  Said it was up to date.  After two days, I highly doubt it is still upto date.  Tried downloading a fresh copy of the software and reinstalling.  No change.
Now I just noticed Firefox also can not access anything and when I try to update it, it says it is up to date.  I have version 22.00, not the current 23.  Don't know how long it has been blocked from updating.  Didn't find anything to improve the problem in thier troubled shooting area.  Tried downloading new copy of Firefox..... and download failed.
Two days ago, I downloaded a Windows update, classified as Critical.
I do have another computer running on the same internet connection.  It appears to be fine and has to current Firefox version.
Is this a virus or a result of the Window's update?
Thanks for your help!

A:Avast and Firefox update blocked, virus or Window Update issue?

I forgot to say, Internet Explorer and other programs are working just fine.  No issues accessing anything on the internet.  The only problems,  appear to be Firefox and Avast unable to connect to server.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hi bibs64
Can you do a System Restore back to before you installed the Norton 360?If not, you might have to reformat and start fresh assuming you have an XP disk to reformat from?Otherwise, can you disable Nortons and run an online Panda Scan or Trend online scan and see what they find?

I have a M70e desktop with Windows 7 32-bit that connects to the Internet via our Proxy Server.  I've verified that the firewall is disabled.  Additionally, I've added the application and the exception list and I've ensured that the TVSUUNCServer is set to Allow in the Inbound Rules as well as being enabled.  I can hit sites outside our domain (Google, CNN, etc.) without any problems so I'm pretty sure our proxy server is operating correctly. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to resolve this issue? Many thanks!

I have tried the uninstall tool and reinstall, and an update works. I scan, it doesn't find anything, but then falls into the same problem with the next boot.
Also, the Real-Time Protection status stays as: Malware Protection Enabled, Malicious Website Protection DISABLED
Any ideas?

Hello otarsus:
If your system did not have any unresolved malware issues from any type of previous MBAM2 scans, and your laptop has the correct date, time zone and time, then, since you already have performed a Clean Re-install process, it would be helpful see three diagnostic logs posted in the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Help sub-forum.
Please establish membership via Create Account and then read the following and individually attach the 3 requested logs in a post to the above sub-forum: Diagnostic Logs along with a copy/paste of your post's narrative from above.
Thank you.

Hi. My PC has a problem. It has become very slow in fetching data from the hard drive. However this problem only exists in Win 7(Ultimate x64). I've installed XP on this machine as well in dual boot and there's no problem with it. It all started like this,
My PC didn't have an internet connection for a long time so when I got back internet connection, I tried to update everything including avast antivirus. As it was taking an unusually long time to update, I downloaded a fresh copy of avast and installed it. But after that, I started getting BSOD in the first reboot after the installation. So I logged into safe mode and restarted without doing anything. I was able to boot into windows and use it. But random BSODs started from here on. On that same night, I had downloaded all the windows updates which were pending. Random BSODs kept occuring frequently until I booted with 'Last known good configuration' option which made all the BSODs disappear. The problem of slowdown had already started after I chose to update, not sure which one among the antivirus and windows update is causing it. But after removing avast, the speed was improved a bit but nowhere near to normal. Whenever I hold F5 button, the icons disappear while refreshing which wasn't the case before this. The worst part is, all the games have extreme stutter which makes the framerate fall down to less than 10. GTA IV which used to run around 45-50 fps on an average now runs at 15fps average and drops to sub 10 frequent... Read more

When Win update is downloading the updates the Avast icon in system tray is spinning continuously. Is the AV checking the MS updates and if so why?
Any advice please.

A:Is Avast AV drastically slowing Windows update downloads?

Hi zzzz It's possible that avast! is checking the updates that are being downloaded by Windows. I remember once avast! was flagging a Windows Update as malicious and blocking it. If you want, you can add the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder in avast!'s whitelist so it won't scan it.The instructions to do that are in the link below:http://www.getavast.net/support/managing-exceptions

I have avast Free Antivirus installed and configured on a Windows 8.1 PC. Today, I was alerted by avast with a File Reputation warning, as seen below:

Reading the warning information, I am instructed to Abort the connection as recommended by avast.

Be aware that avast! File Reputation may cause False Positive during a Windows Update.
- Should avast be scanning the connection line for Windows Update?
- Does this compromised Windows security by preventing any critical updates?
- How can avast File Reputation be improved to reduce False Positives?
- Have any Windows Update failed due to avast warning WUs as suspicious?

Feel free to discuss further.

A:avast! File Reputation flagging Windows Update

I don't know why Antiviruses should even scan Windows Updates. I may be too new in the domain but, I've never heard of a situation where someone got infected over Windows Updates. Adding to this, avast! is having a lot of false positive detections lately, many which are annoyings : AdwCleaner, RogueKiller, RKill, etc. Yes avast! is an excellent Antivirus with an excellent reputation, but their number of false positive is rather annoying, not even adding the fact that it scans files or Windows features that it shouldn't be handling.

Right now, it looks like it's suspecting an update package coming from an official Microsoft update server, like, are you serious ? Aren't you able to whitelist Microsoft's approved domains and not scan them ? If it is to do that everytime a program or Windows have updates, maybe I should just stop recommending it and recommend another Antivirus, which is less annoying then.

avast!, fix your false positive detection ratio and file reputation system otherwise you're going to lose users.

But anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Hi All

Tried to modern game Tetris in Windows 8.1 on my Desktop, keeps getting blocked as suspicious file, why I even reinstalled Avast I don't know really at all, System I know was a little slower with Windows Defender activated for some reason, but maybe cause I never completed full scan with Windows Defender, who knows. But I can't even play my Modern games with Avast 9.0.2018 in

Submitted as False positive, no response from Avast as yet

Maybe I made a bad choice switching to Avast after all, even after removing the file from Avast chest, the game still won't run

I installed a couple of Windows updates a while ago and my a/v (Avast! 5) detected mscorsvw.exe as a rootkit. I think that the update that triggered the warning is KB979916, a security update for MS .NET framework 3.5.

Since I thought that it's a false positive I chose to ignore the warning. Later I scanned for malware with Malwarebyte's Antimalware, Windows Defender, Windows malicious software removal tool, SuperAntispyware (free) and Avast! and none of these programs detected anything suspicious.

I scan my computer for malware on a weekly basis, all of my programs are fully updated. What do you think guys? Is it a false positive or should I be concerned?

Check the attached screenshot and HJT log if you like. Thanks in advance!

Windows Updates have been a real thorn in my side since moving to the country where I have limited bandwidth ISP. I have 6-7 Windows PCs I (try to) keep updated, both XP and W7. I've tried downloading updates just ONCE using the Microsoft Update Catalog, but then I still have to note what pc needs what updates and install them manually.

Newegg's sale on Windows Home Server today has me wondering whether I might dedicate a PC to WSUS just to manage updates.

Can folks here with WSUS experience suggest whether this is worth doing? Or might be more trouble than it's worth vs. the manual "Update Catalog" method? Or tried w/WHS and that's a problem in itself? TIA for any feedback...

A:Windows Server Update Services and Windows Home Server -- worth doing?

I manage the WSUS implementation where I work. Overall, it's a pretty straightforward product. The only hassle will be going through the list of "all updates" for Windows 7 and for XP and declining the ones that don't pertain to your systems. The good news is that WSUS will determine for you, which are needed and which aren't and will place an icon next to the ones which you need.

I don't have experience with running WSUS on WHS myself....but I'm guessing it would be pretty much the same as doing it on a straight up Windows server.

As far as getting the clients to use your WSUS server, that's a simply registry change.

PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows updateHordes of users using Avast Anti Virus software have found that their PCs, especially those running Windows 8 and 8.1, grind to a halt after they applied both Microsofts recent KB3000850 update and Avasts latest automatic updates...Avast has been hard at work trying to figure out why the combinations of a recent update of Windows & Avasts own update was causing machines running their software to break down completely. An update in the above Techworm article refers to this avast topic...Lastest Windows Update Problems which indicates member pk has advised a patch has been released.pk on November 20, 2014, 09:13:37 PMWe have been able to simulate the problem in our lab and I think we fixed this issue. A:PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows update

Glad that I removed Avast from my 8.1 Pro install when Grinler posted the 6 month BitDefender promo.
If not, mine may have been a casualty also. That was also the last Avast install I had, the reasoning beyond the scope of this Topic.
Thanks for the creation of this Topic.  Avast is still, despite starting to earn a bad reputation in some respects, quite popular with many & a top Free choice. Consumers needs to be aware of these things, and if it weren't for these forums, many would be clueless until it's too late.

We bought a new HP laptop with Win 7 Pro (64 bit) preinstalled in July 2013 from a reputable (I think) online dealer. I installed the free version of Avast and initially all was well, and bootup time was very quick. After about a month or 2, I was prompted to update Avast, which I did. Immediately 2 problems cropped up. First, bootup time became very painfully slow (sometimes up to 5 minutes or more before the computer is fully operational). Once it was booted up, it did not seem particularly slow anymore. Second, we began to get the message in the lower right that "copy of Windows is not genuine (build 7601)". This message shows up only occasionally (most of the time it does NOT appear), and it does not seem to have any noticeable effect (unless it is related to the slow bootup time). The screen shows our normal wallpaper. Reading somewhere that Avast may have caused the slow bootup time, I uninstalled Avast and instead installed the free version of AVG, which I still use. But both problems persist (slow bootup and occasional "windows not genuine" message). I believe my copy of Windows is genuine, but interestingly, the computer does not have a COA sticker, at least no that I can find. We also do not have Win 7 disk from MS (only from HP). I strongly suspect that Avast caused the problem, but I don't know how to fix it. Below is the MGADiag report.

Your symptoms are typical of a race condition - most likely caused by a conflict between your AV and other software.
I would suggest uninstalling Avast completely, and running their cleanup tool.
What other AV's have been installed (even if not activated?) - most will come with a 'free' trial install of either Norton or McAfee, so it's worth running the removal tools for both.
Please do things in this order....

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete, reboot.
Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

Now uninstall Avast - using the normal Control Panel uninstaller.

Download the Avast removal utility from here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Follow the instructions for running it, and when complete, reboot the machine.

I am the IT admin for a plastics manufacturing company. We have a very restricted internet policy for some of our warehouse workers that really do not need web access but do need network access. We are running a FortiGate 110C physical firewall and Windows 7 x64 in a Domain. I am having issues with Windows Update being blocked, so my question is, what is the Windows Update server address? I need to "white list" it within the firewall. I tried looking in the logs but with 100 some users, the log moves very fast.

Thank you for your assistance!

Hi there
Will the W2012 Server get the 8.1 type of update --anybody know. There seems to be a deafening silence on W2012 server which IMO is strange as it is STREETS ahead of the really horrible W2008 server.

W2012 server has options though already to avoid the whole metro stuff but it would be nice to add some of the proposed customisation features to it.

I'm also not hearing anything about whether W8 ENTERPRISE will also be upgraded -- IMO this is MORE important even than the HOME versions if Ms wants businesses to adopt W8. Boot to the standard desktop is really a MUST for businesses - by also pinning standard programs to the quick launch task bar and / or the desktop a lot of problems of User training can be avoided.

A:Windows 2012 server to get update or not - anybody

I am wondering this myself. Also, how will future support work for users who do not upgrade to 8.1? Nothing in 8.1 looks to have much of an effect on someone who uses a SMR and the desktop exclusively. Should I bother upgrading and risk having some type of issue with my work PC?
I recently rolled out a 6 PC trial with Windows 8 and Start8 (Start8 with GPO), and am really concerned 8.1 could break something with GPO or Start 8. Ugg, MS.

Just installed WSUS on our server 2003 server. But I can't access the WSUS console. Everytime I click on the icon it opens up a browser attempting to find http://servername/wsusadmin and page not found error.

Any ideas what could be the problem. Its probably something simple I've overlooked. Been looking at he microsoft website but the entire thing just seems to be links to more links and finally a page with very little information.

As far as I can tell, I've exhausted all the options I could find on Google. While I've seen many descriptions of this very problem, I couldn't get any of the remedies to work.I've recently encountered some odd behaviours in my browser (Firefox) and then Antimalware Doctor started running. I managed to get rid of Antimalware Doctor with MBAM along with some other suspicious bugs (see log below), but I still can't connect to Windows Update, and my browser is still getting some odd new tabs (presumably pop-ups) and the occasional Google search result redirected to other search sites.I've checked my hosts file, ad it's clean. I have noticed, however, that when I run IPCONFIG it lists 3 Tunnel adapters (6, 7 and 12) and it shows me a link-local IPv6 address which I'm not sure should be there since I don't use IPv6. There are also some unusual route entries in my routing table all with the gateway set to On-Link. I tried removing these routing entries from the route table, but no joy.Thoughts? I obviously still have some malware that's going undetected. Here's some more data:From ipconfig:===========================================================================Interface List 13 ...00 02 72 a0 8b b8 ...... Please follow these instructions: How to remove Google Redirects or the TDSS, TDL3, Alureon rootkit using TDSSKillerIf malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If 'Suspicious' objects are detected, you will be given the option to Skip or Quarantine. Skip will be the default selection.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller. will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.-- For any files detected as 'Suspicious', get a second opinion by submitting to Jotti's virusscan or VirusTotal. In the "File to upload & scan" box, browse to the location of the suspicious file and submit (upload) it for scanning/analysis.Now rescan again with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but this time perform a Full Scan in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to check for database definition updates through the program's interface (preferable method) before scanning and to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

I had a Virus that was preventing my AV software (McAfee) from downloading new definitions, and whenever I tried to go to Windows Update I would get redirected to Google.com.

In my foolish attempts to solve the problem on my own I reinstalled Windows which took me back to SP1, but nothing else changed.

I eventually found someone in these forums with the same problem that may or may not have been resolved, (the thread was closed after 5 days). I followed the instructions in that thread by running "ComboFix" and "GMER". I have the logs for both. It appears that they have eliminated the threat as my AV program is now up to date and i'm no longer being redirected to Google. However, now when I try to reach Windows Update nothing happens. It just endlessly tries to connect to the site and I have to control/alt/delete to close the window. I usually get the "This program is not responding" message.

Please help me update Windows... Thank you in advance.

A:Can't connect to Windows Update

I believe i'm now good to go. I closed all other open pages and reattempted to reach Windows Update. It took 15 minutes, but i'm now reinstalling all the old updates that were lost when I reinstalled Windows.

If you have any questions about my specific issues in the above post to aid in helping others i'll be happy to share.

Once again, my original problem was a virus that prevented my Anti Virus program from updating and clicking on Windows Update would redirect me to Google.com.

Running ComboFix and GMER resoved those issues.

Thank you!

On Tuesday morning Windows did an automatic update. When my PC rebooted it could no longer connect to the Internet. I have worked with Dell hardware support and have identified it is not a hardware issue. They will assist in fixing the software conflict for $299. I have been troubleshooting all week and am at a dead end. Here is what I know and have done -

Yellow exclamation on network system tray icon -
Device Manager shows No problems with Network Card -
% other computers in house and all are working fine -
Router has been reset 100 times -
Switched LAN cables -
Reset winsock and IP sockets -
Did system restores back to December 2010 -
Booted in Safe Mode and reset IP and sockets -
Cannot see Home network or connect to Internet -
Disabled all Firewalls -
Set my own IP addresses instead of automatic

I have tried everything I have read on every message board and I am still in the same position I was on Tuesday morning - no Internet and no Connection -

If any one has any ideas I will name my first born after you - boy or girl and they will have to suffer consequence if they are not the correct gender as your name.

Thanks for your help.
