Services Don't Show In Control Panel

Q: Services Don't Show In Control Panel

I'm using NT Server 4.0 SP6a

Suddenly (it's posssible I had a break in?) some of my services don't show in Control Panel's "Services" applet. In particular none of the Exchange (5.5 SP4) services and the RAS service no longer show there. I know the services are running because e.g. Exchange works. What can I do to get these services to show again in Control Panel's "Services" display? BTW, other services (e.g. DNS Service) *do* show in "Services".

Preferred Solution: Services Don't Show In Control Panel

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have WinXP Pro. When I try to open Administrative Tools, Services I get a pop up that says " Windows cannot open this file" it is the popup you get when a File Extensiion does not have a registered application to open it. The Services Shortcut in Control Panel Shows the target to be %SystemRoot%\System32\services.msc /s and it shows the Start In to be %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%. None of this has helped me to determine why I have the problem but i'm hoping somebody will understand it and at least point me in the right direction.

Hey,im in some trouble here. I tried to conect my TV to my PC (already did alot of times and it always worked) but it didnt recognize it. So i think i selected the "split screen" and now i can open everything normal on my monitor, except the control panel. Control panel goes to the right, like there was no end to the monitor. Also if i move a icon out of my monitor in the right, the icon disapears like its on a imaginairy screen. Now all this would be fine,if my pc would recognize my TV after all this, but no. So im stuck with a monitor which thinks it never ends in the right side. How can i fix this?

And see if it opens there?

Odd problem. Yesterday I wanted to check the status of the batteries in my Microsoft wireless mouse, so opened Control Panel, and clicked "Printers and Other Hardware" (whose icon actually shows a mouse). Choices are Pick a task: View installed printers or Add a printer. Under "or Pick a Control Panel icon, I have only Printers and Faxes, and Scanners and Cameras. THE MOUSE ISN'T A CHOICE, AS IN NOT THERE! In order to get to the mouse, I have to switch to classic (Win98) mode, which contains an icon for the mouse.

Wasn't that way we I first got the computer. Why doesn't my mouse show on the XP style of the Control Panel?

Hi Everyone,

I have been struggling with getting my SLI to work.

The VGA cards are:
Connected via SLI link.
Connected to power.
Connected correctly on the Mother Board.

My Mother Board is SLI compatible.
My PSU is SLI compatible.
My drivers are installed and up to date.
I have re-installed my drivers as well.
I have updated my Bios as well. (During which my Primary drive got corrupted and I had to start all over)

Nvidia Control Panel is STILL not giving me any SLI configuration options. It detects that both VGA cards are connected and I can select which core to use, but nothing about SLI.

I'm stuck and need to be pointed in the right direction.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks in advance!

A:Nvidia Control Panel doesn't show SLI options

I know you said you've updated the bios but have you checked for settings related to SLI in the BIOS? There may be a setting to enable it.

Also from some of the forums I've read, people have resolved a similar issue by rolling back the Realtek Ethernet driver, apparently this is related to the Z68 boards. May be worth a shot at least since updating the driver would be simple enough.

Hi Windows Seven Forums,
I'm walking through what should be a very easy FTP server install from the Windows 7 Features. This walkthrough is great...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrzNPq-B6Ts

Unfortunately, when I click on:

Control Panel
Programs and Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Internet Information Services plus sign
FTP server plus sign
FTP Extensibility check box is clicked which highlights all FTP server check boxes
Click OK.
Microsoft Windows then says Please wait while Windows makes changes to features. This might take several minutes.

Once installed, I click on:
Control Panel
Administrative Tools (click on View by: Large icons if you can't see Administrative Tools)
...and no Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager?

I have restarted the PC and removed unchecked the FTP server and restarted...what's happened?

A:FTP server doesn't show in control panel, administrative tools?

It looks like when clicking the
Web Management Tools and
World Wide Web Services
aswell, that FTP Server comes up. Fixed.

When installing applications they appear to install correctly. An icon is created on the desktop and I can access the program.

In control panel under programs and features... the application is not showing up. I cannot uninstall the programs, because they aren't showing in programs and features to uninstall.

Yes, workarounds can be used to delete the program, but there is something wrong. The programs are not installing properly.

I ran sfc/ scannow as admin no problems indicated
After a couple hours messing with this:

Thought I should add this... When I right click on the installer/setup exe file and select to run as administrator the installer works and does show up in programs and features... Also, I can delete the program as well from programs and features.

I have never had to do this before even though I am admin...(in name mostly) unless I am willing to allow more vulnerability to my system by turning on all the time. Still having to run as admin does seem a bit much for installing programs. The worst part...the installer will run, installs the program, yet leaves off the ability to uninstall or change in the programs and features page of control panel

Good evening,

I've noticed a difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization between editions of Windows 10.

My wife's laptop is running Windows 10 Home, and her personalization screen looks like this:

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise, and my personalization screen looks like this:

Notice that the menu options on the left, and quick access to change the theme settings on the bottom are missing from the enterprise screenshot.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it simply a difference between editions? Or is there a setting that is not turned on in my installation?

Thanks in advance!

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

I got myself an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ condenser microphone a few weeks ago, and I haven't really found out how I can change the gain, which I hear is important to do.
There is only one slider where the gain slider also should have been. The mic doesn't have a gain know like some other microphones have.

As you can see there is one slider. It only changes volume as far as I know.

How can I change the gain, is it needed, or can I maybe control gain using the volume slider?
If I can't change it directly through the mic or through the control panel, how can I change it? D:

Thanks in advance!

A:Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

I have a recording studio (Sonar X3) and use several AT mics but they are not USB mics (such as the AT2035 and AT2050).

"Volume level" is the same as "gain". You can adjust the "Volume Level" or you can adjust the "gain" - both are the same thing. On mixers, amplifiers, etc, some will call the volume control "level" and others "gain".

A USB mic should have its own listing in the Sound/Recording Panel. Whatever slider that is has, such as what you show, should adjust the volume level. Many recording programs also have volume level adjustments.

Can I do this any way while minimising possible damage? We are running an NT4 network with some 95 and some NT workstations.

A:Windown Defender Win 7 do not show in services.msc and ...

You might need Windows 7 install DVD, or, a factory restore -- that would be "worst-case." Do you have any System Restore Points? Or, do you have any full image backups on any external media? What you have made or did not make before this happened to Windows Defender will determine next course of action.
Meanwhile, just to make sure you are not a victim or virus or malware, have you run any anti-virus and anti-malware scans?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS570 laptop, and when I turned it on yesterday, it booted up to my desktop and I could move the cursor around the screen, but none of my icons or the taskbar showed up. Ctrl-alt-delete didn't work, so I booted it in safe mode and ran chkdsk. It found one problem with .lnk file and fixed it, but the problem remained the same. I was able to open the task manager in safe mode, and I noticed that services.exe was using 99% of the CPU most of the time.

I have symantec antivirus software installed, I run Malwarebytes and regcure at least once a week and left them fix any problems. I am running Windows XP home with service pack 3 installed.

Can anyone help me?

A:Desktop doesn't show; services.exe using 99% CPU

Regcure may be the cause of it all. It's a myth, crapware and will never do anything useful for anyone, ever. As an aside, advocates that use it need to be directly confronted as often as possible due to the fact that their ignorance causes similarly uninformed people to use it and have serious problems. It SHOULD be classified as malware, not so much because of what it does, or what it claims to do, but due to the fact that so many ignorant people use it and then have problems.

Continue to run chkdsk in order to find out if the HD is consistantly good, or is giving regular errors as an early-warning sign of pending failure.

Have you used the Safe Mode menu to boot to "Use Last Known Good Configuration" ?

What happens when you use Task Manager to kill the process using 99% of the CPU ?

You should not have both Symantec and Anit-Malwarebytes. AV software frequently conflict and cause probems. Further, the effect of doubling your AV scanners does not double your protection. If it increases it at all, that increase is marginal. However, it DOES double the load on your computer resources, and slows your machine down. Uninstall one or the other.

If possible, running a System Restore may fix the whole problem. It's possible a Windows Update failed and an SR will send the machine back to when it worked.

Hello. Recently had AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 return info on traces of backdoor.hupigon.

Looking through Services Panel, I noticed this listing:

Needless to say I think it's bogus. The file in the Temp folder seems to be missing.

Worried about Trojans, etc. Any help much appreciated.

But it does show up in the control panel. Is that normal?

Basically, I was trying to follow this guide: Windows XP - Disabling the Security Center But I couldn't do the "Turn off Windows Security Centre" part because the security center isn't listed. Is this a problem, and if so what should I do to try and fix it? Thank you.

A:The Security Center doesn't show up in services

Hello Actraiser

Security Center being disabled may be related with malware, but I'd like you to answer a few questions before we can decide on that.

Is your computer running slower than usual? See too many ads/pop-ups while browsing? What anti-virus software do you have installed? Have you tried doing a System File Check? When did this start happening?

I'm assuming you are on Windows XP.

See if all the dependencies of Security Center are also set correctly. See this (link to BlackViper's website) guide for help.

I have two xp pcs. A printer is attached on one of the xp machine. Sometimes I get print error messages and the documents are not printed in the network machine. I want to gain access of 'services' of that computer (in which printer is attached) and stop/start the 'Print spooler'. So that I could delete the error print jobs from my computer. I tried computer management to stop 'print spooler' service to delete the error print job but I got a error.

I have had a problem with the control panel for over a month now.

Whenever I click on an icon in the control I get the following message:

'Windows cannot find 'C:\windows\system 32\rundll32.exe'
From the control paned I also cannot access Accessibility options, add hardware, automatic updates, date and time, display, game controllers, internet options, java, keyboard, mail, mouse, network setup wizard, power options, quicktime, realplayer, language options, security center, sounds and audio devices, speech, system, user accounts, windows firewall, and network wireless setup.

I have run many malware apps and still have the problem with the control panel. I corresponded with chryssi2001 at this site:

BleepingComputer.com > Security > HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal

and under this topic: Access to control panel, cannot access any programs

I ran Hijackthis, Copmbofix, Kaspersky, and several other programs but none corrected the problem. I cannot remove any programs from my computer, cannot change the resolution, etc.

I am currently running Stopzilla, Comodo internet security, avast on-access scanner.

Currently I am connected to the intenet but the local area connection icon says: "Acquiring network address" but I am connected. I have had to reboot lately to even get online. The computer starts but doesn't connect unless I disable Comodo and reboot.

I would appreciate any help I could ... Read more

Hi CBWEB! Welcome to SevenForums! If it's Font's you need that folder address is C:\Windows\Fonts

I don't think that the Control Panel even has an address.

My control panel is missing from my start menu. When I click on "set program access and defaults" I get the error message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is my home computer and I know that I didn't change anything. Any suggestions? A DELL tech told me I would have to reinstall windows. Really don't want to have to do this.

A:No control panel

Good news is you won't have to reinstall Windows. Bad news is that you've most likely got a virus on your PC.

I highly recommend that you head over to the HijackThis forums. Follow this 5 Step Guide to post a log. The analysts over there will help you remove any viruses or nasties from your system.

We can try something to see if we can re-enable control panel. Note that if the virus or spyware program that disabled control panel is still on the computer this fix may only work temporarily or not at all.

1. From the Start menu, choose Run...
2. type regedit
- You can screw things up if you go around changing things with regedit when you don't know what you're doing, so be careful here.
3. From the Edit menu, choose Find...
4. type (or copy and paste) NoControlPanel in the search box and uncheck "Keys" and "Data" (so only "Values" is checked)
5. Choose OK to begin the search. It should find an entry that looks like
NoControlPanel REG_DWORD 0x00000001

6. Double-click this. Change the value to 0 (zero) and choose OK
7. Press F3 to repeat the search. There may be multiple entries you need to change. Keep doing this until it reports it can't find any more

Note that you may need to reboot before the control panel reappears. Also, can you get into control panel if you go to Start > Run and type "control.exe" without the quotes?

There are many ways that the bad guys ca... Read more

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe... Read more

Like a few guys before me I have picked some malware (these scumbags suck our precious air) that denies access to the Control Panel and I get the message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions.............Please refer to System Administrator" I am Sys. Admin. (stand alone pc). I have reset the settings for NoControlPanel in my registry and tried to open control.exe, which gave me same message. (These suggestions I found on an earlier thread). Tried everything (except putting an axe through the box), still get this same error message and I'm still locked out. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
