spelling check nightmare

Q: spelling check nightmare

My details are:
Windows 98 operating system. Installed Office 97 professional edition over Office 95 professional
My problem is:
My spelling checker no longer works. Instead I get a message:
The spelling check is complete. Text set to (no proofing) was skipped. To find (no proofing) text click Edit/Replace click More, click Language, click Format and choose (no proofing).

On following as best I could the above cryptic instructions, I found to my horror that parts of my document had been deleted. I have tried to activate the spelling check through Spelling & Grammar tab on Tools Options but without any success. I have looked at the custom dictionary. It is the same as the one I have used for years without trouble when I was running the predecessor to MS Word 97 SR-1. If I try to edit the Custom.Dic I get a message to set the Automatic Spell Checking check box in Tools Options - but there is no such box.
If nobody can solve this problem, will the followinf work?I have two hard discs C and D. If all else fails, is it safe for me to reinstall the Office 95 version of Word on the D disk. I have Office 98 on the C disk (where I put all my programs).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I typed this in a word doc & Spelling and Grammar: English (United States) popped up telling me that I misspelled a word.

Spelling and Grammar: English (United States) in windows says the sentence below is correct.
Destination Folder Access Denied, then I has to click Continue.

I don?t remember this problem with Win 98se or Me but noticed it in XP & now Vista.

Is anyone out there having trouble with Windows Spelling and Grammar check?

Also my email OE is happy with either sentence.

I don't know if anyone can help as I can't get my computer to bring up the error message it originally showed! I am very much a beginner, in other words I don't have much of a clue about these things.

My spelling and grammar check has stopped working. First there was an error message but now when I click on button it just says selling and grammar check complete and I know it isn't because there are spelling mistakes.

I have windows XP, this probably isn't enough info? If anyone has any ideas please spell it out simply!

While checking for misspelled words in a document, you probably click the Ignore Once or Ignore All button a few times. Doing so lets you skip a word that you don?t want to change but that the feature thinks might be misspelled. Spelling and Grammar remembers the words you skip and skips them during subsequent checks. Most of the time, that?s what you?ll want. Occasionally, it?s a problem. You might realize that the word was misspelled and you need to change it. Unfortunately, Spelling and Grammar won?t find ignored words, after the fact.

I use Windows Live Mail for all my e-mail stuff. I need to type mails in 3 languages: Dutch, English and French. I'd like to have spelling check for these 3 languages, however spelling check for French seems to be missing. I went into options and then spelling check. There is a box with languages I can use spelling check on. This includes Dutch, English (UK), English (US), English (Australia) and English (Canada). French is not there. I really need French spelling check. How can I obtain that?
If you need more information, please leave a comment.

A:WLM spelling check language problem

Hi Highdetailz, welcome to 7F!

If I understand you correctly, you don't have French listed in the choice of languages box as shown in this example, correct?

Source Step #4: Windows Live Mail 2011: Add a second language to the Spell checking feature | a Tech-Recipes Tutorial

If so I may have found a way to add it. There are also two other choices you can try.

1. Run a SFC /scannow to repair any corrupt files, then check to see if WLM has the French listing back. If that doesn't work:

2. Repair WLM: In your Start menu search box, type wlarp , and click the application highlighted in the results list. Answer yes to the UAC prompt.

This brings up the dialog window to repair or uninstall. Select Repair all Windows Essentials programs. WLM is part of Windows Essentials so you have to make that choice. When the repair is finished check to see if you have French listed.

wlarp stands for Windows Live Automatic Repair Program.
If all that doesn't bring France back, the third way is more complicated, from a thread on the MS community Forum, top of page 2:

After I type a new email message in Outlook Express, when I pull down the tools menu, the spelling check option is grayed out, so I am unable to use spelling check. Do I have to buy a spelling check program? My old computer had OE 6.0 with the spelling check in the tools menu. My new computer also is running OE 6.0.

Also, this new computer did not come with Microsoft Word so I installed it from a Microsoft Office 97 disc I have. When I type up a document, I am unable to find a spelling check on any of the pull down menus. There is a "grammer" choice in the tools pull down menu but it does not correct spelling. On the same line as grammer, to the left of it is abc with a checkmark but it doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a box (in WLM 2009) that can be checked called "check spelling in current input language". Is that the one? I'm not sure what it does since my spelling is checked even if that box is unchecked but maybe it refers to the case where multiple languages are installed.

I have received some complaints that the spelling check for Windows 10 does not work within most webforms and/or internal websites. While I am typing this message I can see squigly lines for nearly each word since my native language is Dutch and this message
is in English. This same effect does not work for all forms or fields. Sometimes it will give a squigly line but it won't offer any alternative options. It looks lik the type of field detemines if the spelling check works or not.

In the past we had an add-in for Internet Explorer called Spelling Check which was a lot more reliable. Since it is no longer available we don't know how to offer the same functionality for all forms and websites.
Please let me know if there is anything that can be done to improve this.
The current spelling check built into Windows 10 itself only seems to check certain field types. For example the field I am typing in right now seems to be working just fine, highlighting errors and making suggestions. Other websites however this feature
does not seem to work. It looks like there is a differentiation between field types.
Some of our web applications/sites no longer have a spelling check now which is a hassle for our users. Are there any known restrictions to the field types that are checked?

I have also posted this question in the Windows 10 forum because I am unsure if this should be something posted there since the issue is with the new Windows 10 spelling check however it is relate... Read more

Hi all,
Earlier this year "Check Spelling as you type" in Word 2003 worked fine. Now it does not and the red wavy line does not appear under wrongly spelled words. (unless I click Spelling and Grammar first).
I have tried every suggestion on this web page with no luck.
The registry item named '1' mentioned in the article was missing.
It's a real mystery as the 'check spelling as you type' still works in PowerPoint and also in Windows Live Mail.
I can reactivate 'check spelling as you type' in a document If I choose to run a spell check via the 'Spelling and Grammar' icon on the toolbar or from the 'tools' menu item. Only then does 'check spelling as you type' begin working again for the current document.
I tried a system restore to June which is our earliest restore point for 2014. (I have restore points for 2012 but inexplicably none for 2013. I'd rather avoid going that far back in time)
I re-installed Microsoft Office 2003
any other ideas?

I couldn't find an answer in the search base.

Upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. Strictly an internet access issue. This is a very randomly generated message, that may pop up at any time. Seems to be a function of Panda's Anti-phishing security and will occur in Opera, Firefox, and Chrome, never use IE so don't know about it. Sometimes, I can go to the previous window (or 2) and everything is fine, advancing back to the original problem window and it will open normally. Sometimes opening another browser will fix the problem. At the bottom of the error message page is a Yahoo search bar. I never use Yahoo, especially since I started getting these messages. I wonder if the problem is related to Yahoo.

http://www.pandadomainadvisor.com/search.php (this is the url displayed when I get the error message). Is there a Panda setting that I can disable or enable to prevent this from happening. The websites are viable and my internet connection is live when I get these messages. I tend to keep several windows open at once and it may infect 1 or 2 or all.

I hope someone out there can help me because ? to give you an idea of my frustration level -- I?m about ready to set fire to my computer and then grind the smouldering ashes into dust with a lump hammer, as I foam at the mouth babbling expletives.

Here?s the problem: At some point my computer crashed and I had to turn it off using the switch at the back of the box. When I turned it back on check disk (chkdsk) automatically started up with a message saying something along the lines of ?it?s highly recommended you run this?. So I did and it started up then stopped and remained stopped, frozen, until I eventually gave up and turned the computer off at the back again.

This process repeated itself (chkdsk freezing, and always at a different point) and does so every time I turn the computer on ? the only way round it is to take up the ?hit any key in 10 seconds? option to bypass the check disk. I don?t like doing this though because if there is something wrong with my harddrive, or just needs some file repairs, I want to sort it out, not ignore it.

I browsed the net for solutions but I can?t seem to find a way of running check disk once I?m into windows. If I go to ?run? in the start menu and input the ?chkdsk? command (with or without the /f parameter or any thing else; I?ve tried them all) I always get the same message about the ?volume being in use? and ?do I want to set it to go on restart?. This puts me back to square one because check disk always freezes on restart.

Background: I have a Sony PC, using XP Multimedia edition SP3, and the environment is traditionally very stable. It came with a single hard drive partitioned with 15GB to the c:\ and 165GB to the d:\. A few years ago my c:\ was running out of space (even though it?s only OS and Apps) so I acquired a copy of Partition Magic 8.0 and reallocated 5GB over to the c:\. Seamless! It was beautiful. Now, a few years later, I?m running out of room again and I tried the same thing but somehow hosed it up. (Note: I was sure to first do a full Disc Check, Defrag, and backup before reallocating). During the Partition Magic process (a script running before XP boots) there was and error (don?t remember the error number, 4 digits, but the process controlled the error and quit ? did not freeze the machine). I loaded XP and (using the Partition Magic reallocation wizard again) tried a second time, resulting in the same error.

At some point I did a Disc Check again on the c:\ and d:\ and upon reboot ? before XP loaded ? an error came up (~?Invalid file security ID, Resetting new ID? or something to that effect) and it ripped sequentially through thousands of files (this happened for the d:\, not the c:\). During this 40min blue screen horror show, the file names were sequential numeric (not English) so perhaps an index table or something. Yikes!! My instinct was to immediately turn off the machine and try to save whatever I could but, since I had a full backup, I reluctantly tried... Read more

A:Disc Check nightmare (error: ~“Invalid file security IDs, Resetting new IDs”)

I've had my head buried in the sand trying to make the problem magically go away. No luck with that. I had to reformat the d: partition to fix the problem. All seems fine now. In the future, before using Partition Magic, I will toggle the disc properties for indexing, whereby all files on the drive get touched to change the file properties. Through that I was able to uncover a few corrupt files and delete them via DOS. Then Partition Magic worked fine. Strangely a DiscChk did not catch the corrupt files.

Hi all,

I recently got a new laptop that runs Windows 10, and I use Google Chrome as my browser. As with my past laptop (also Windows 10), every time I spelled a word incorrectly, it would be underlined. A right-click on the word would give me a choice of words that would usually include the correct spelling; all I needed to do was click on the correct spelling and the word would be correct. This worked across platforms; my Gmail, obviously, but anywhere else I typed: my work email, here, anytime I type on line. The spelling was working fine until yesterday! I've had this computer about 2 weeks, and everything was normal until yesterday.

Most often, when I highlight a word to copy it and then right click to get the menu that includes Copy, the menu does not open so that I have to go to Edit>Copy. I can't recall just when that happens and when it doesn't. But when I purposely misspell a word in this reply and it gets underlined, nothing happens when I right click on it. If I highlight the underlined word before I right click, still nothing happens.

What program are you using? That is, are you typing in Microsoft word, another word processor, or some other program?

I have office 2000 and in word when i want to do a spell check the tool bar and it is not there.

So i went to tools>Options and the spelling and Grammer Tab is completely greyed out.

Can any one tell me who to activate this. Have re-installed this a few times and nothing.

A:Spelling & Grammer Greyed out

make sure that the document you are checking is not protected, WD2000: Some Menu Commands Unavailable (Document Protection)
If that is not the case, and you are not able to get that tab, or that option even with a blank document, then maybe your normal.dot has become corrupted. search your system for normal.dot and rename it to normal.old and then restart Word. See if you have the option now.
You could also do a Detect & Repair which is available when you open Word, Click on Help and select Detect and Repair.

My new computer has a Dutch spelling checker (Windows 7) but I write most of my e-mails and other documents in English and would like an English spell checker. Can I download an English version of the spell checker from somewhere but at the same time keep the Dutch spelling checker?

Thank you for you help.

A:Solved: Spelling checker

Windows 7 does not come with a built-in spellchecker, it's a function of the applications you install which have a spellchecker included (eg Microsoft Office etc.). You will therefore need to tell us which specific applications you are referring to for which you need an English spellchecker.

A bit ago, I had a freeze and did a ctrl-alt-del and restart. During the restart, a message appeared that "Dummy Winidows" was not responding and did I want to terminate the program. I did.

The misspelling struck me as strange, so I ran SpyBot and CenturyLink's PC Health checkup. Neither reported a virus, but I remain suspicious. My startup seems very, very slow, particularly the loading of my IP connection.

Can someone enlighten me? IS this a virus, and is there a manual way to remove it if it is?

Thanks, GardenLadyToo

I found the problem. The same thing happens when you remove Windows Media Player as when you remove Cyber-whateveritis player. It also misplaces your CD-ROM player.

Put back Media Player and re-assigned CD-ROM as Drive E. All is well now

Sorry if this isn't the right category. Is there a way in Word to flip letters of a mispelled word. Example, "thier," flipping the i and e. I remember being able to do it in some program, but that was umpteen years ago and probably not a Microsoft product.

A:Spelling Errors in Word

I don't quite understand your question, but this'll probably work for you:

If you keep typing beleive instead of believe, you can hit Tools-Autocorrect and on the Autocorrect tab, make an entry that replaces "beleive" with "believe". It'll automatically fix that for you.

If the word is a real word both ways, then do a find/replace (ctrl-h) and type the wrong word in the Find box and the right word in the Replace box. Hit Find, let it find it and decide whether you want to replace or skip that instance until you've checked all instances of that word.

I'm not sure how swapping the i/e would be any easier than either of those tools.
