Surface Pro 4 - Firmware Updates for ROCA and Intel J-Tag Vulnerabilities

Q: Surface Pro 4 - Firmware Updates for ROCA and Intel J-Tag Vulnerabilities

ROCA (CVE-2017-15361) has been out for some time and yet I have not seen, unlike most all other major PC manufacturers, ANYTHING on any MS website concerning a firmware patch for ROCA.

No updates, ETAs, We're working on it, etc. It seems to me that they hope it just stay quiet.

I did, however, open a ticket with MS Support and was told by the Escalation tech that ROCA and the Intel J-Tag vulnerabilities were considered to be LOW RISK and would be patched eventually, no ETA. This was after the various front line staff I spoke
with had no idea what I was talking about.

I'm hoping someone on here has heard or read something from Microsoft to help restore some confidence in the brand. I'm definitely considering a strong suggestion to stay away from MS hardware.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, As informed, Critical Intel Thunderbolt Software and Firmware Updates - ThinkPad, were released, but only the software was put into the third party catalog in SCCM. Is there a reason for this? Can it be expected the firmware piece will not be added to the third party catalog? it seems odd only half the solution would be added. ie: n22th06w.exeThunderbolt Firmware Update UtilityVersion:17.0.0.3-N22TF16W please confirm? thanks in advance,Sean

A:Critical Intel Thunderbolt Firmware Updates not available in 3rd party catalog

just to add more info. It would appear the driver availability is sporadic at best based on the article ID's listed for each model in the 3rd party catalog   Can we expect this to be cleaned up? https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sk/en/solutions/ht508988 Thanks,Sean

Regarding the nice note pinned on Thunderbolt. I ran System Update on my P51 and no driver was offered, is there a delay to the roll out? I have had USB-C thunderbolt issues on my E570, can I expect similar updates on E570? It was not in the page but share the same controller? Can we expect any update on P50 as well?

Hi all-

Got roped into doing a little tech support for my girlfriend. Her Surface Pro 2 is stuck on startup on this screen:

Here's a summary of what I've tried so far:
Create recovery drive on a USB- when I plug in the USB now it takes me to the troubleshooting screen instead of the firmware screen but will not allow me to reset PC. When I choose "Yes, repartition the drives" I get the error message "system drive cannot be found". When I choose "No, keep the existing partitions" I get the error message "a required drive partition is missing".Attempted to use command prompt to format drive but when entered "list volume" no volumes were found. Command prompt is the only program I can get to because I can click on it under "advanced settings".Shutting it on and off again

I'm not actually very good with computers and have just been going off of what other people on forums have said, so I have no idea what could be wrong or what I should be attempting to fix. Should I be trying to just wipe the whole thing and start over or is it something specific I can get in there and adjust? I'd really appreciate any insight.

https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en...s-8.1-update-1 This is what I was working off of but it all went to hell at the step where I was supposed to hit "repartition the drives".

Get Ready to update your Java program as Oracle has released its massive patch package for multiple security vulnerabilities in its software.

The United States software maker Oracle releases its security updates every three months on Tuesday, which it referred to as "Critical Patch Updates" (CPU). Yesterday, Oracle released its first quarterly CPU-date of this year, issuing a total of 169 security fixes for hundreds of its products including Java, Fusion Middleware, Enterprise Manager and MySQL.

The security update for Oracle’s popular browser plug-in Java addresses vulnerabilities in the software, 14 of which could be remotely exploitable without authentication, that means an attacker wouldn't need a username and password to exploit them over a network.

In the past two weeks I've started to have random graphic driver failures (screen goes blank, then recovers, and task bar notification pops up indicating graphics driver failure)....  This is on my Inspiron 11 3137 laptop.
To begin troubleshooting, I ran the MyDell diagnostic tests; the video card part of the test failed with the error "Surface Test Failure" - WVC07-L1M.
I've done my research on other posts regarding this error, both on here and other sites. I made sure I had the latest Intel graphics driver. I also tried the second most recent Intel HD Graphics driver from the Intel site, and the error persisted.  I made sure all the Intel graphics settings were default, and tried various other settings, too, with no luck.
If I were just getting the MyDell error, I wouldn't be concerned; but with the intermittent graphic driver failure I am a bit worried, because my laptop's warranty runs out in 11 days.  Additionally, I've had other unrelated issues with this unit so I'm weary of its long-term prospects.
If there is a Dell rep on here, is there a way the graphics "card" can be replaced under warranty?  (Although I'm pretty sure the graphics for this model are on the CPU die itself...)... Anyhow, I read on other threads with this issue, users ultimately had their units repaired.
System specs in signature below.
Thanks for any help or guidance on this issue!

Hi all,

I have a used Widows Surface tablet that I got off of my friend who never really used it much. It's an older model (says Model 1516 on the back) but it's in great shape and has been reformatted back to factory settings.

The System Info page is showing Windows RT 8.1 as the OS.

When I run Windows Update, I get a list of about 60 updates that need to install. When I try to install them, they look like they're working, but then they undo the install and present me with the message, "Some updates were not installed. Error(s) found: Code 8024200D."

It does this whether I update all at once, or if I try to run each update separately. I've tried rebooting the system, I've tried running the updates one at a time, I've tried running the DISM which I read to do online. I just can't get any updates to install.

I did get a CBS logfile from the DISM, and there are "errors" in the log, but I have no idea how to go about addressing them. I tried to attach that file here, but it says the filesize is too large. the CBS log is about 50mb. I can break it into smaller chunks, or copy/paste relevant bits if anyone thinks it can help.

Please let me know!

Thanks,
Joe

Hi everyone, I'd appreciate your help.
I have a Dell N7110 laptop and a few days I ran PC doctor on it and the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (3000) failed the primary surface test but passed the video memory test.
In addition to this, a few days earlier I got a screen blackout (for a few seconds) with a message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered successfully" and a BSOD once.
Today I did a clean install of Windows 7 x64, added all the drivers and ran a PC Doctor test again. And The Intel passed the Primary Surface Test. I ran the test multiple times, Quick Test, Default Test, Full Test, Stress Test, it passed them all. It seems there are no problems.

I need to mention that when the test failed I had older versions of the video & chipset driver. I will past the old & new dxdiag portion about the Intel video card down bellow.

Should I be concerned, was it a just false positive or a bad driver? Or my video card is failing and it only passes the test for now ?

I do not know where to put that on the forums threads, i guess it is hardware (motherboard) matter.

I would like to share a tool for updating the Intel ME Firmware version that does appears in the Asus motherboard UEFI Bios, in the General tab.

It's been a while this 1,5Mb firmware hasn't been updated and this is an opportunity to do it very easily.

This, with the MEtool.exe from Asus using the "Intel Firmware Update Utility" v8.1.40.1456 (FWUpdLcl64.exe) in a Windows environment (not in DoS!) for your convenience.

I've packaged in the attached file, the tool as Intel ME 8.1.65.1586 [1.5Mb] - MEtool_FW.zip, converted inside as "Data.BIN" ("ME8_1.5M_Production.bin" from July 27, 2015)

All you'll have to do to update the Intel ME firmware is to launch as Admin the MEtool.exe inside the folder while you're on Desktop and reboot.
You can check whenever in the Bios setting too, the new version that appear.

Hello everybody, I know another thread with similar problems here, booting three times ect .... but not with the new specific problem, this one seems to be new to me and I hope for a solution without the technician having to change the Hardware Motherboard. I had the original ME firmware and now an update was made by Lenovo Vantage, but this unfortunately did not work properly and led to the following: 1. at boot the "Strg P" entry has disappeared 2. in the Bios the entry with ME Firmware Version is empty 3. ME is shown as deactivated or not present in Hardware Manager, The result is that you can no longer perform flash if ME is no longer present in the system. 4. When restarting or reactivating, it will take about 35 seconds for the Lenovo logo to be displayed and the system will start up  this is all very frustrating, i hope that there will be a software solution, or maybe someone knows a solution .... Thanks all for support.....

They assume there is no space within the path to the current executable file. For example, one of the scripts has  %~dp0pwrtestx64_win10.exe /sleep /c:1 /d:10 /p:30%~dp0FWUpdLcl64.exe -f %~dp0CNP_H_B_Corp_FWU_Base_Production_12.0.35.1427.bin -OEMID 4C656E6F-766F-0000-0000-000000000000 -forcereset but it needs to be wrapped in double quotes to prevent issues where the path contains spaces: "%~dp0pwrtestx64_win10.exe" /sleep /c:1 /d:10 /p:30"%~dp0FWUpdLcl64.exe" -f %~dp0CNP_H_B_Corp_FWU_Base_Production_12.0.35.1427.bin -OEMID 4C656E6F-766F-0000-0000-000000000000 -forcereset Here's a link to the corrected file I made: https://gist.github.com/kylemisner/095932e295e1d0694d6a8b1b1aab63c9 The original file is provided in this post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/P52-Intel-ME-won-t-update-to-12-0-24-131...

Hello, I update the ME firmware to version 11.0.18.1002 Rev.A on the 850 G3 (T9X36EA).After update i shutdown the laptop en restarted. The laptop cannot power up correctly and i get blinking leds on the capslock and numlock keys (blinks with a 3 second delay) After some time the laptop blower is at full speed and screen stays black with only power button / wifi and sound led on. I have been using the correct version.http://support.hp.com/nl-nl/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-elitebook-850-g3-notebook-pc/7815299/sw... What steps i can take to resolve this? Br, Dennis

Hello, I have a Lenovo T430 laptop.I updated to Intel Management Engine Firmware 8.1  , and saw a big performance loss. In Windows Experience Index, My processor had a subscore of 5.9 before, (with version 8.0), now it has dropped to 4.9.  And it is actually very noticeable. My question is: Is it possible to download to 8.0 again? I know about the risks, but I am willing to take it. I tried downloading the 8.0 version, to downgrade, but it doesn't work. (ass seen in the picture). So, as said: What can I do to downgrade to 8.0?Thanks for help.

I seem to be in a loop while upgrading from a Pentium G840 to an i3770 K on an Intel DH61WW motherboard.
It seems that I need version 8.x of Intel Management Firmware and I can't get to update past version 7.1.52.1176
According to this page, I need version 8.x to continue for updates to use Windows 8 & 8.1

So far, I have had the bios version update to
BEH 6110H.86A.0048.2012.1105.1520
I had the i7 installed but it acted confused. So I reinstalled the Pentium and still nothing works as far as updating the Intel Management Firmware .
According to this page I am ready for 3rd Gen i7 but not unless Intel Management Firmware gets updated first

Board

DH61WW

3rd Gen-Ready AA#s

AAG23116-206
or later
3rd Gen-Capable AA#s

AAG23116-204
3rd Gen-Transition BIOS version

BEH6110H.86A.0035
3rd Gen-Ready BIOS version

BEH6110H.86A.0041 or later

Hello. Back story, our company has purchased and now rolled out our Lenovo X1 Yoga laptops (model 20FQ).  During the rollout, we installed all of the drivers from lenovo's site via the MDT driver package and then deployed the latest System Inteface Foundation so we could install teh Lenovo Settings app later down the road via the Windows 10 App store.   We have not installed the lenovo settings or lenovo companion apps from the store but are now receiving reports of users getting a message from "Lenovo Companion" that an update is available.  The update that is available is an Intel ME firmware update.  Is there a way to disable or prevent these updates from pushing to users via registry or configuration file? Does the System Interface Foundations app contain the Lenovo Companion app or the update features?   Screenshot of update message attached.  We do have the ADMX templates for Lenovo Companion and Settings in our AD/GPO; would disabling updates in the GPO for Companion prevent these from running even though we don't really have the actual Companion app installed? Thanks!Further details:Win10 x64 Enterprise Edition 1607 build w/all latest patches/updates.

A:X1 Yoga and Intel ME Firmware update being pushed but how?

Lenovo System Interface Foundation (LSIF) is doing this.  The only purpose of this app is to support Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion, so if you don't install these apps, there is no point to install LSIF.  One of the features of LSIF is to automatically install "critical" updates for Lenovo software and drivers, such as this recent Intel ME Firware update.

The Deployment Guide for Lenovo Settings and/or Companion explains this feature and how to disable it:  https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/hf003321

I have copied-and-pasted the relevent section below:

Chapter 4. Considerations for Deployment

Lenovo System Interface Foundation contains some features which may not be appropriate for enterprise customers.  Please read this section carefully to understand these features and consider whether they should be disabled in your specific environment.

1.  Automatic Updates ? Lenovo System Interface Foundation updates itself automatically whenever a new version is posted to the Lenovo website. Some IT organizations will want to disable this.  The automatic update can be disabled by registry.  To do so, copy-and-paste the below text into a .reg file and then import it into your registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Lenovo\ImController]
"DisableAutoupdate"="1"

Or use ?lsif-disable-autoupdate.reg? that is provided in the .zip fil... Read more

I guess, dropped win7 support  is a mistake in the release notes? If not, when can we expect a win7 64bit fw update package? This is a firmware update and not the Management Engine Interface software package, which  might be indeed OS dependent.  quoting from the release notes:Version 11.8.50.3399
(Fix) Mitigated security vulnerability?
(Fix) <some other stuff >
(Fix) Remove win7 64 bit. Could someone please check what's going on?Thank you.

When I run the "Update" app on "Lenovo Companion" it tells me I need this and then appears to go through the whole installation process followed by a reboot. But then when I run the "Update" app again it tells me I still need to install it, as if it never happened. I went to the Lenovo support page to try to install it from there but I have the same problem, in that after rebooting and running the "Update" feature it tells me I still need to install it. Any ideas? Thanks.
