How to make Excel 2016 the default app to open xls and xlsx data files

Q: How to make Excel 2016 the default app to open xls and xlsx data files

I know how I'm supposed to do it, SETTINGS==>DEFAULT APPS==>CHOOSE THE DEFAULT APP BY FILE TYPE, but Excel 2016 is not an option. Instead, it tries to send me to the App Store. I think I have tried everything except reinstalling Office.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Use Control panel, default programs, associate a file type - you have more options to select version.

If your 2016 is the desktop version, you have to bury into menus by clicking more apps and scrolling until you find "look for another app on this pc", and then navigate to the 2016 excel executable.

So, I was searching on the internet for solutions about how to open a file with Windows Shell Common, then I found this guy on Yahoo! Answers telling me to default open it with CMD. Now I can't open it with any programs. I'm stuck with the CMD, popping out when I open the file. Hi!

Good day!

May I ask another way how to resolve my file problem,

"excel cannot open the file <filename>.xlsx because the file format or file extension is not valid. verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

I already try the "Open and Repair" method of MS Excel 2007 and still cannot open the file.
I cannot change the extension by renaming it. (I'm using Win7)
I already checked the associated file extension on control panel.
Thank you in advance!

A:EXCEL CANNOT OPEN .xlsx FILE

What version of Excel do you have?  Usually that error comes from Excel 2002.  You can upgrade to 2003 (MS Office 2003) at Amazon for $50 or less, and then download the free 'fileconverters.exe' from Microsoft, which enables an older MS Office to read the later files.

I know this, because it happens to me all the time, what happened to you.  So finally I took the plunge and upgraded to MS Office 2003, on all my machines.

The upgrade will accept all your customizations, macros, etc. so the interface looks the same, post upgrade, because it will import all your Normal.dot settings.  Difference is, that 'fileconverters.exe' will work in 2003, but not 2002.

.xlsx is Excel 2007 and later (secure, the extra 'x') format.  So I don't see how you'd get that error if you're really using 2007.  The only other possibility, is that someone password protected it, yet somehow you're not getting the password prompt.

I guess it's also possible that the file was generated by some other later version of MS Office which prohibits 2007 from reading it, but I can't see why.  This is just a very wild guess.

I was reading this past thread and am having the same problem with a few machines in the office. They are all running Office 2010 on Windows 7 and I can't get the file associations correct. The newer file extenions are fine but the xls and xlsx files will not automatically open when double clicked. They WILL open if you open Excel and then go to the file, open commands. The new 2010 files will open automatically when double clicked. Files are all saved on the desktop or same folder with different results. Does anyone know of a fix to this? I have done all of the normal fixes, repaired the installation, tried manually open with and checked the always open with box, went to options, advanced, and the "Ignore other applications that use DDE" was not checked. The ONLY thing I can think of is that some of these users are using Microsoft Project 2003. But I did do a full uninstall on Office 2003, fully uninstalled Office 2010 and re-installed Office 2010 and am still not able to have the users double click to open files. Any other ideas? (Again, only happening on a few machines, other machines running Office 2010 on Windows 7 are fine)

I recently installed MS Office 2010, but kept my installation of MS Office 2003. Very glad I did, because quite often I get errors in 2010 and it closes my file. It does a save of my doc so I can recapture it, but that is a nuisance. With my existing spreadsheets, I always want them to open in 2003. At least for now.

I have gone through the 'open with' routine, doing the browse and going directly to the folder containing the 2003 version of excel.exe and specifing that as the program to use to open Excel spreadsheets. I checked "always use this program....", but when I click on the file it opens 2010.

I find I have to open 2003 first and then load the file. I don't want to have to do that.

Running WindowsXP, SP3.

Any suggestions?

Hey guys,
First time posting here.

I have Microsoft Office 2003 & 2007 installed on my laptop and using windows 10. Laptop came with 2007 but 99% of my excel use is for work and they use 2003. So rather than downgrade (seemed silly) I installed 2003 also. Everytime I open an excel file either .xls or .xlsx it opens in 2007. Does anyone know if it is possible to set 2003 as the default program for all these files. I have done the basics like settings, default programs, but when I go to file type and find .xls & .xlsx the only programs I can set for these are Microsoft Office Excel. It does not let me choose between versions.

At the moment I have to open 2003 and then the file. Not a huge problem but if possible would like to make 2003 the default.

A:Default Excel 2003 to open all files over 2007

I don't have an answer for you.
Just to remind you that Excel 2003 can NOT open xlsx files, unless you install the compatibility pack.
Only 2007 and high versions are able to open xlsx by default.

Why don't you just use the 2007.
When you are ready to save the work > Office button > Save As > at Save as type, click the pointer and select Excel 97-2003 Workbook (.xls) > Save.
That way all your office excel 2003 computers will be able to open and edit it.

Hi,
I seem to be going against the tide with my query.
By default, when I open an Excel associated file by double clicking it in explorer, my Excel 2010 opens each file in a new program window. This is really annoying as I often want to consolidate data and copying and pasting is not as easy across multiple
program instances.
I've seen lots of threads of people who want to make there Excel open files in separate instances, for example:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/office2010/thread/749983b3-ba7e-49d3-99bf-f67d70245046

but no one trying to make them all open in the same window.
Can anyone help, perhaps without resorting to altering the registry?
Thanks,

PROBLEM
I have user & desktop folders on two partitions (i.e. two separate sets of each). I want to change the default desktop and also the default partition selected when I save a file.

BACKGROUND
My ACER came with the disk divided into C: and D:, labeled as Acer and Data, respectively. All my programs and boot are in C; I want all my data in D: I want the desktop that appears when I boot up to default to the desktop in D and for the computer to default to D when I save files. (Currently the computer defaults to the desktop and save path in C.) I want the boot, OS, and apps to remain in C (unless someone advises differently). Disk Manager gives the following info:

C:Simple, basic, NTFS, healthy (system, boot, page file, active, crash dump, primary partition)
D: Simple, basic NTFS, healthy (primary partition)

Hi everyone,

I am having an issue on Microsoft Excel 2016. I want to link an Excel file to a Google Sheets. To do so, I want to use the External Data tool, using a web query.

The problem is that once i have selected the table I want on the Google Sheets (which is published on the web), I have some issues on my Excel sheet. It says that I need to enable Javascript.
The thing is that Excel is opening Internet Explorer to get the data. And I would like it to open with either Mozilla or Chrome. Is there a way to set one of these browsers as default instead of IE ? Or is there an other way for me to get my data from the Google Sheets automatically ?

Thank you in advance !

Hi there

The query simply takes the components of the London FTSE 100 (like the Dow jones / S&P) and downloads into a spreadsheet -- all text so no complicated conversions or formulae.

Any ideas -- did I install Office 2016 missing some option.

I use this type of data gathering quite a lot so this is a very annoying problem.

as an aside I notice that the web access via EXCEL is still IE based rather than using Edge !!!! so maybe even Ms doesn't know how its own products are supposed to integrate with Edge yet !!!!

I'm not sure why this is happening but one thing you can try is this.

Open your w/book. Press Alt+F11 to open the vb editor.

Go to View->Project Explorer. A list should appear, one of the entries will possibly say something like VBAProject followed by the name of your spreadsheet.

In the Microsoft Excel objects folder under this, double click the 'ThisWorkbook' icon.

A new pane should open on the right-hand side.
Copy and paste the following

Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Worksheets("yoursheetname").Activate
End Sub
(change yoursheetname to the name of the sheet you want excel to open automatically each time).

Close the vb window and then save and close your excel spreadsheet

Hope this helps.

Quick question:

I use excel to view large sheets of data and the first thing I always have to do is shrink the percentage to 80 percent, so I don't have to scroll as much, etc.

I realized it would be a lot easier if I could just tell Excel to open ALL sheets at 80 percent, so I don't have to make that change myself. But I can't figure out how to do that exactly and I was wondering if it's even possible?

If it is, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could show me how.

Thanks in advance,

Can Excel be set up so that every new workbook created in Excel would start with certain formatting characteristics? It can be done. To create a workbook template for new workbooks:

1. Create a workbook that contains the sheets, default text (such as page headers and column and row labels), formulas, macros, styles, zoom percentage, and other formatting you want in new workbooks that you base on the template.
2. On the File menu, click Save As.
3. In the Save as type box, click Template (*.xlt).
4. In the Save in box, select the folder where you want to store the template.
5. To create the default workbook template, select the XLStart folder in the Microsoft Excel folder. (You'll probably find the XLStart folder in c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office\ )
6. In the File name box, type BOOK to create a default workbook template.

I was cleaning up some old files on my pc when I tried to open a.xls Excel file. I was informed that there was no program associated with it. I went to the default app in settings for file type and made the association and added Excel as the app for opening .xls.

Today, when I try to open a standard .xlsm or .xlsk, I get a message stating "Microsoft Excel isn't currently your default program for viewing and editing spreadsheets. Do you want to select file types that Excel shouls open".

When I selecy "Yes", I get another message "To change your defauilt apps go to Settings > Apps > Default apps"

I cannot "detach" Excel from the default for .xls.

Is there any way to reset this?

Tommy

so jump lists via my taskbar and windows 10, I'm not having much joy :-(

I've just got a new desktop (Jan 2016) with windows 10 pre-loaded and I installed office 2010 - jump lists didn't work - so I thought I'll uninstall and install office 2016 64bit - jump lists still don't work arrggggg!

But they work for IE and notepad and file explorer but not for firefox or photoshop elements.

I've tried deleting the files from:
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations
and rebooting but to no avail

any ideas anyone????

I really need jump lists working for Excel & Word.

I am running Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 on Windows 7.

When I open Excel my personal.xlsb opens fine and my macros are available and I can create new macros. No problems.

BUT when I open any existing Excel file the pesronal.xlsb is not opened and therefore no macros and I cannot create new macros as I get the error "Personal Macro Workbook in the startup folder must stay open for recording." I have been trying things all night with no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will list the things I have tried or checked with no success below:
In Options>Advanced Tab>General Section....the box for "Ignore other applications that use DDE" is NOT checked.
In Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Trusted Locations... I have C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART listed which is where my personal.xlsb is located
In Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Macro Settings ...Disable all macros with notification...selected and not selected neither way solves the issue.
In Options>Add-Ins>Manage: Disabled Items ...There are no disabled items.
I have deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel in the registry editor
I have deleted C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLSB and then run excel to create a new personal file.
I have renamed C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLSB to PERSONAL.XLSA

Hi! i need you help!.. I am unable to open or save files in the shared drive using Excel 2007 but i can open/save excel 2007 files saved in my local drive

The error message I get when i try to open is "Could not open...." followed by the path and excel name.

This is the error message i get when i try to save in the shared drive:

Microsoft office excel cannot acces the file". There are several possible reasons:

the file name or path does not exist
the file is being used by another program
the workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook

Please help

Ok this is a weird problem I ran into in the past with Word, and I'm having trouble finding information on it, because of the details involved.

What's happening is if i load up Excel and then goto file/open and load an excel document it comes up.

If I goto Start/Documents and try to load it from there Excel seems to hang, also if i Browse my computer and goto any excel file same thing happens, and of course it happens over a network share as well.

I didn't give it more then a minute or 2 to come up (We are talking small Excel files here nothing huge) On the last computer this happened on with Word, the documents would eventually come up, but it would take 5 minutes to load this way.

Anything I load withen Excel (Meaning I load excel and then goto File/Open, comes up instantly)

Windows knows how to handle the excel files and what program to load them with, I tried deleteing the (Is it called a mime?) entry in windows that tells excel how to handle the .XLS file, then held shift and Right clicked a .XLS file to re-enter it into Windows, just in case Windows wasn't opening it right but this had the same effect.
Any ideas?
Thanks
