Internet working on PC connected to router by ethernet but wireless not working

Q: Internet working on PC connected to router by ethernet but wireless not working

I have a linksys model wrt54gl v1.1 and I am using Windows Vista 32bit Home Edition. I have a pc connected to the router directly through an ethernet plus a laptop, 2 iphones and a blackberry that get wireless internet from it. 2 days ago wireless stopped working. The internet on the pc connected to the router by ethernet is still working and the power, WLAN, ethernet, and internet lights are all lit green. The internet and ethernet lights flash when data is being transferred but the the WLAN light is not flashing. I have restored the router to factory default but it is still not working. The phones and laptop are not detecting any wireless network present. Hope you can help.

Preferred Solution: Internet working on PC connected to router by ethernet but wireless not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have restored the router to factory default but it is still not working.Click to expand...

The only other thing to try is to unplug the router for a few hours. You could also try another factory reset.

Hi guys,

I've been researching and trying to days to get this to work with no avail so I decided to post here for some help as I see this community is really active.

We've got 4 different laptops here and none of them can connect to the wifi anymore (it suddenly stopped working for the last whole week). We can connect to the internet through ethernet cables though. We only use one at a time (if ethernet, then wireless is disabled and vice versa).

You have an IP on your LAN, but none on your wifi. Check your router to make sure DHCP for wifi is turned on and you have enough available addresses.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a wireless router working for friends. I got it to work yesterday, but now it is no longer working.

My setup:
Fiber optic connection, HAG
Conitech wireless router access point (can find very little info on this)
PC XP pro sp3

If I connect my computer to the HAG, it, of course, works fine.

Yesterday, I hit the reset button on the back of the conitech router (because they didn't have the password) and went through the setup wizard, connecting my HAG to the WAN port on the router and it worked fine, both connecting via wireless and with a cable to one of the LAN ports on the router.

Today it is no longer working. Both wireless and LAN show it is connected but I can't access the internet.

Any ideas on this? I'm guessing you'll need me to post ipconfig /all but I'm not sure if I should do it with my computer connected to the HAG and working, or connected to the conitech router. Let me know and I will paste.

Windows 7 Ultimate Internet Issue

So I recently encountered an annoying issue, first off let me start by saying I had a virus not sure what it was all I know is I had to use ComboFix to get rid of it, it disabled my Windows Security Center and Firewall and I had to go through several things to get all of that working again. Now to my current problem, when I start my computer the internet will be fine until I open an internet browser and start browsing then it will just stop working completely and nothing I do will fix it unless I restart the computer and then it does the same thing. This does not happen on my desktop (Same OS) or this laptop I am using Ubuntu on, the internet going through the router still works on everything else connected and the laptop having the issue still shows it is connected to the router AND the internet, I just can't use it..

Any ideas? Please let me know if you need anything else from me and I will get it, thank you.

A:Internet stops working, but I am still connected to the router?

Confused, you state internet works fine until you open internet browser, Are you using some other internet program, FTP or some such?

Have you tried other browsers to verify it is IE? If you are using other internet programs like FTP or RSS reader, Email then it probably is IE but try another browser first.

I have a problem that i need help with on Windows 7 x64.

I have a wireless router that works just fine, same is the connection to the internet when I connect the cable.
When I switch the internet cable to PC, I cannot connect to any web page, I receive the error: "The web page is not responding."
My internet works through cable with a static IP. The details from the network adapter are the same as the router (IP adress, Subnet mask, Default Gateway etc. all the same) and I can see in the notification area that my computer is connected to the internet, but when I open the browser to connect to a webpage I get the same error, when I press the button "Fix network connection" from the browser it says that my connection is good but it appears to be a problem with the site. When I open the Windows troubleshooter it doesn't find any errors; in the adapter status i can see that I receive/send packages; in Command Prompt I type "ping -t <My IP adress>" and I don't get any "request timed out."
Basically my PC is connected to the internet, but the browser doesn't connect to any site. When I switch the cable back into the wireless router and connect to it, I can connect to any site.....
I also tried changing the homegroup, changing the adapter priority in advanced settings, restarting the computer multiple times.....but no success. I don't know what to do next....reinstall the Windows maybe?

Hi guys

After several hours in vain searching the internet for a similar case - and its solution I now turn to you.

The source of my problem, the way I see it, is my SMC router (SMCWBR14T-G).

My problem is that my two computers + my wireless music player cannot connect to the wireless network whenever the "internet cable" is plugged into the WAN socket of the router.

If I unplug the "internet cable" and restart the router all of the devices connect just fine.

My ISP has told me, that the router/computer (whichever is connected to the "internet cable") has to be configured to obtain a dynamic IP address which it already was!

This problem started when I moved from my previous apartment to my current. In my previous apartment (with another ISP) the router/wireless network worked just fine!!

I can thus conclude, that the router worked (works?) fine.

If I plug the "internet cable" directly into my laptop I have working internet access.

This means that I have working internet.

To summerize: My router works fine (if correct conditions are present) and I have working internet.

A friend told me it might have something to do with the ip address the router receives from my ISP which makes the router unable to provide valid ip addresses for my wireless devices.
If this is the case I still do not know how to solve the problem.
My question is: What should I do to make the router establish a working wireless LAN WITH the "inter... Read more

would you post the following tests

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if separate, the make and exact model of the modem

Also please make a note of the status of the light on the modem and on the router

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I have a Gateway laptop and am connected to a Belkin Arris Router. My status on the laptop says connected (excellent) but IE does not pull up anything.

When I ipconfig, I get Media State disconnected and an IP address that is 169.254 and subnet mask of 255.255. I went to Internet Protocol and manually put in the address for the router but it doesn't recognize this address in my ipconfig.

How do I get my IP address to show up as a 192.168 so I can connect to the internet. There is another laptop connected to this wireless router that works just fine.

My computer works perfectly when connected with the wire, but when I try to use my wireless internet, it says the signal is excellent, but when i open the internet it says "Page load error". So no problem with my router, just somethings up with the computers ability to connect wirelessly.

Hello:I've been having an issue with my Dell XPS Desktop (Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V Ethernet card).
When I connect this server to my router by an ethernet cable, all other other computers connected (Hardwired or Wifi connected) disconnect themselves from the internet. I get the same response when I connect to the Wireless Wifi as well.
It happens only with this Desktop running Windows 10.
I was told to change the DNS address to the OPENDNS Addresses - I tried and I had no luck. I do not have the Ethernet card or the Desktop in powersave mode. They do not go to sleep when idle.
Can someone please make any suggestions. Any input from your end would be very much appreciated.

After moving I was using a wireless Internet connection for a while but then I started using a direct connection to a router. Now I'm back to wireless but I'm having this problem, my brother has been using the wireless from the beginning and still does so I'm sure it's my computer. No browsers work, no games, nothing can connect to the Internet.
I'm running windows 7 and now the Internet icon in the taskbar is the computer monitor with a yellow triangle as opposed to the bars of wireless internet unless I'm connected or trying to connect to the wireless Internet that either says I have limited connectivity or is connected but doesn't work.
Also, sorry, I know I should be showing what comes up in command prompt but if someone could give me the commands to type in, I'll report what cones in as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance.

When I try and access the internet through any of the main browsers (I.e. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari) they tell me along the lines of 'unable to access the network' and 'this page can't be displayed' after taking a while attempting to load. I also cannot access it through any of my Windows 8 apps. I know it's not an issue with the home broadband itself and is something to do with my laptop as it is running fine both wirelessly and through using an Ethernet cable on all other devices. I would really appreciate some help with trying to fix this asap as I have spent a lot of time researching this issue and trying most things to resolve it without success, I also need to use the internet for loads of coursework over the summer hols and cannot afford to be taking it to a pricey IT technician. Take a look at the file
\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hoststhere MUST be at least a line reading LOCALHOST
but the question is there anything other than comments in it?
If so, leave the comments and the localhost line and delete everything else.

If you modify the hosts file, then you also need to

ipconfig /flushdns
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Yesterday, my internet through wireless stopped working all of a sudden. It was working good till I closed my pc and went out for a few hours. When I returned and tried to access, it simply does not connect. I get an error saying "Windows was unable to connect to abcd (router name)". I tried to plug it into the router through ethernet and it works perfectly.

I have tried to uninstall the wireless adapter and the lan adapter as well. I have tried it in safe mode. I have tried to delete the network also but now that left me with inputting the password everytime I want to connect.

I am living in a student accomodation with 6 more people and all of them's is working good. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate Edition on Dell Studio 1555. The router is a Netgear one for the Virgin Media Superhub.

Thanks a lot

I have a Belkin G wireless router connected to an Arris modem (Comcast).
I am trying to connect a laptop and an android phone. There is also a PC connected to the wireless router via an ethernet cable.

When the PC is connected, the speed of the wireless connection drops significantly.
From my phone speedtest shows ping 13ms, 27.75 down and 24.18 up when the PC is not connected. When the PC is connected, speedtest shows ping 20ms, 0.2 down, and 0.1 up (if the connection doesn't time out.)

It seems the ethernet connection is taking nearly all the bandwidth and the wireless devices just won't work. How can I give equal bandwidth to the wired and wireless connections?

My husband's laptop stopped accessing the internet. It shows connectivity to the wireless router and worked fine previously.
He thought the problem might be Norton Antivirus 2006 because he started clicking no instead of yes when it was 'doing stuff' and so he asked me to uninstall it as he was not using it. (He is using McAfee free from comcast) I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool as the computer froze each time I tried to access Norton from the control panel. It appeared that the uninstall was successful but that did not solve the problem.

I have just bought the following router: Wireless-G 125* High-Speed Broadband Router and Access Point (http://www.buffalo-technology.com/p...igh-speed-broadband-router-and-access-point/).

We have virgin media internet at home (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/service.do?id=2).

Basically, they gave us a cable modem (with a coaxial cable connection).

We had to install some software on a windows XP PC, and authorise it, and then we were able to access the internet using a RJ-45 cable. I connected it to my PC (Ubuntu 7.04) and it was working without a problem.

Since there are a lot of people in our house we bought the wireless router to share the internet.

The problem right now is that after I connect it to the wireless router (i.e. the cable modem to the WAN port of the router) I can connect to the router but cannot access the internet.

I managed to set up a WEP key for my router (by going to:, username: root, pw: [blank]).

There were a lot of other settings but I'm not really sure what to do, or how I should go about allowing internet access for my router.

I am generally familiar with ubuntu, but unfortunately I don't know enough about the networking tools. Also, its strange but now if we connect the modem directly to the windows PC I get limited or no connectivity (but that could be a separate problem). Right now I want to try and get the settings for the router.

To summarise:

Hi to all,

I am using a broadband internet of a provider named BSNL,through a simple modem. Recently I got a Beetel 450BX1 ADSL2 + Router and want to use the wireless capability of the laptop so that I don't have to be glued to my table. The OS I'm using is Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) on an HP Compaq 6515b.

I configured the modem by following the instructions in the following link--

I believe that's a straightforward method for configuring a router, and that accomplishing this is very simple.
I followed the steps, only changed the username and password to that given by BSNL.

Then, finally I unplugged the LAN cable and clicked on Connect to <connection name>, punched in the serial key. But it does not connect and says "Windows was unable to connect". Even after using Windows Network Troubleshooter the problem is not solved.

Now I think there can't be any problem with the router otherwise it would not be configured in the first place.

Please help me solve this problem.

Okay I live in the dorms in college.(well actually they are not the dorms but overflow apartments because the dorms were full, not sure if it matters but thought i should add) I brought my wireless netgear router with me to school to plug my Ps3 into and to download certain things the school blocks on the regular wireless internet.

So I plug my router into the jack in the room and then run wireless to my laptop and wired to my Ps3. I set up the router and it determined the internet connection is DHCP . I set the router to obtain I.P. and DNS addresses dynamically and it won't work. then i set it to use static addresses. ( the address that it picked up dynamically ) It then works for awhile, sometimes a few hours and sometimes less than an hour. To get it to work again all I have to do is set it back to dynamic wait a couple minutes and move it back to static. When I lose connection my playstation says its a DNS error.

my roommate plugs his laptop directly into the jack on the wall because he doesn't have a wireless card and he hasn't said anything about losing his connection. But once i plugged him into the router he loses his connection just like me.

I am sure i am forgetting something important if anymore info is needed I will add. Please help it is really getting annoying changing the setting on the router

A:Wireless router suddenly stopped working (Lights still working though)

what devices do you have connected the router anything else wireless
make and model of the pc

does the PC work if you connect to the router by a cable ?
if not
try connecting directly to the modem and see if that works OK

we need to see some details, which will mean you need to copy to a working PC
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I'm not the most tech-savvy, and I'm having trouble with my old windows XP laptop (a Dell Latitude). It's worked fine with wireless and ethernet networking until recently.

At home, and elsewhere, I get a message telling me that I am connected to the internet (either through my wireless or through the ethernet jack): when I right-click on the connection (either Local Area Connection or my wireless card, depending on what is plugged in), the "status" says that my connection is good. Packets are sent and received (although far more are sent than received). But if I try to open a browser, I get the message saying that the browser could not connect ("Server not found" in Firefox). Similarly, windows tries to download updates, then the download quits.

At home I'm using a cable modem (Time-Warner RoadRunner is our high-speed provider) connected to an Apple Airport Express. My partner is able to connect perfectly wirelessly with her Mac with no problems, and in our previous apartment I could connect to the Airport Express with no difficulty (we had Comcast cable internet at the previous place). The password for the Airport Express hasn't changed, and I tried re-entering it with no luck. It is only since moving to a new house and new provider that I've had this problem, but the problem now occurs everywhere I go, so I'm afraid I messed something up in the search for a fix, or that the move is unconnected to the problem.

All the above looks good. Using as a URL in your browser, you should get a request for the user/password for that router. Once you login, you can go to the WiFi portion, enable it, set the SSID and encryption you desire.

Where do you get stuck?

Hi, I am pretty new to this forum so I'm not sure whether I'm correct here, I just hope it is.My device is a Thinkpad A485 with the Ryzen Pro 2500U.I am using Linux (Debian to be precise) on this machine btw, to defuse some confusion that could come up, using the mainline kernel 5.1.0-rc2+ (master from torvalds master branch), but these issues are also occuring on the kernel supplied by Debian which is 4.19.0-4-amd64. The issue in detail I am experiencing is:When I cold boot the laptop without a USB device attached, the USB ports won't give any power until the power supply is plugged into one of the USB-C Ports. When I connect a USB device to one of the USB ports, it doesn't do anything, until I plug in the power supply, but when removing the power supply again, the device remains powered. This is not happening, when the USB device is plugged in while the device is turned off or while it is in the bootup process. Also ethernet seems to be affected by this as the same issue is occuring with the ethernet port on the right side.Is this a know issue? I did not test this on Windows 10 though.I doubt that this is a hardware issue as the devices keep getting powered when the power supply is removed until I plug them out.I wonder whether other people also have this problem.

It would be helpful if you would include your systems specs, and the Model Router. If this is a Laptop, have you set up the wireless on the router before disconnecting the Ethernet Cable? If this is a desktop do you have a wireless Card installed.

Ok, I'm completely stumped here. I've got an older DSL modem (AT-RG634) that is connected to a windows XP box via ethernet. I'm trying to setup a wireless router (dlink wbr-1310) on the connection. The internet connection on the xp box works fine. However, if I plug the router into the modem directly, I am unable to get an internet connection. The router shows that a connection has been established to the modem, but it doesn't have any internet connectivity. I thought perhaps it was related to the MAC address, but I'm successfully able to connect 2 different mac laptops to the modem and have internet without issue. In summary:

Modem->XP via LAN = works
Modem->Macbook via LAN = works
Modem->iBook via LAN = works

Modem->Router->XP (all via LAN) = does not work
Modem->Router->Macbook (via wireless) = does not work
Modem->Router->iBook (via wireless) = does not work

On the wireless connections, I'm able to connect to the router via wireless without issue...I just can't access the internet. I've reset the router to factory conditions and messed with the config, but it strikes me as odd that both of the laptops were able to immediately connect without issue, yet the router is completely unable to connect to the internet. Is it possible that the router just doesn't work anymore? I haven't ever had any issues with it before now...

Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks!

Since Thursday morninG (Feb 3, 2011) I have not been able to connect to the internet with my laptop wirelessly. I have tries to configure my IP address through the command prompt, and oher suggestions I have found on the internet. I have a computer that is wired to the router, two laptops with a wireless connection, and two playstation 3's with internet access. I have never encounted a failed connection liek this before. Right not I have decided to back up my system and dump my system and restart all over. When looking at networks I an connect to, it says that I am connected to my router. However, my computer internet management says that my WLAN is disconnected, but my wi-fi router us in range and connected. In my network and sharing option in the control panel, when I try to diagnose my failed connection between router and internet, it changes the reasons. Right now the reason is that "Primary DNS Server is currently online but is not repsonding to connection attempts at this time." Then it explains smething about a firewall blocking "domains."

I really need to get this issue fixed ASAP. I have been using this router for close to 3 years without a problem like this. I used it perfectly fine the night before I realized I had a problem.

Thank youuuuu,

I ran about a 50ft ethernet cable today. The intent was to have the cable run from my cable modem to a wireless router. However, when I connected the router, it wouldn't connect. When I connect one end of the cable to the router and the other end to a computer, everything works fine. I've confirmed it be working on two computers. I've also tried two different router, neither of which were able to establish a connections. I've double and triple checked the connectors and they're both right. Both routers work when connected to the modem with a shorter cable. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Hi I'm kind of new to this so please bear with me.

I currently have 3 computers in the house that are connected through a wired connection. The internet is provided by Comcast and we have a 5 port wired router as well. The modem supplies the internet and then the modem is connected to an uplink on the port switch. On the routerthere's 1 ethernet cable to the main computer, 1 to another computer, 1 to the Xbox 360, and another to a wireless adapter type of thing.

Now all the lights are on and the activity light is blinking like it always is but the internet is still only working on the main computer. So it says everything is working but its not. I've called Comcast and they said there's no problems and that the connection should be working fine and its just a problem with my router.

I've tried the power cycle and it would usually work but this time around nothing's been working. Tried resetting the modem and it doesn't fix it.

Need help to get the internet working on all the other computers! Please and thanks

A:Internet is only working on one computer, but router says its working on all?

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING yahoo.com

A couple days ago i noticed that my wireless internet had been running slower than usual, so i thought i would try resetting the the router, which is a D-link DIR-655. After the reset, I am no longer able to connect to the internet through wireless. I have 1 desktop PC wired to the wireless router which can access the internet but my other desktop and two other laptops which rely on the router for internet can no longer connect to the internet. They can still detect and connect to the wireless network but they just cant get onto the internet.
Also, after the reset, the desktop pc that is wired to the router has a strange connection now, which is a PPPoE connection. When connecting with this connection, it brings me to a username/password screen which i had never seen before previous to the router reset. I have verizon DSL and usually it would connect automatically but now i have to connect manually through this new connection. I think the problem lies in the router but i cant figure out a way to solve this problem. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. thank you.

I have an Acer Aspire 7552G laptop running Windows 7 x64 that is having problems with connecting to the internet.

I started to notice the wireless and LAN connections becoming very weak, web pages would load slower, data would take longer to download, etc. This lasted for a couple weeks. As of now, I cannot get any signal, neither wireless nor LAN.

I normally use Google Chrome but have tried to connect through multiple browsers.

I have tried updating the wireless/ethernet drivers, and I have also tried uninstalling them all together and reinstalling them. Both to no avail. I have no idea how to resolve this issue and am hoping the tech pros here can help me out!
