Case for my HTPC.

Q: Case for my HTPC.

Ok, I have an HTPC built, I'm trying to find a relatively cheap case, that will look more like a component than a computer when it's sitting with my receiver.

The biggest problem I'm having, is that my mobo is an ATX (not a mini-atx or a micro-atx) and it has to fit a regular sized expansion card.

I don't care if it's the size of a regular desktop...I just want it to look decent.

Preferred Solution: Case for my HTPC.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Guys,

couldn't seem to find exact answer to my questions, so here goes:

I would really appreciate answers that covers all the points below to give me the best informed opinions on what to get.

1. Smallest possible case that will house a card like 7900gs or 1950pro
2. Needs to house a c2d (unlikely to overclock this)
3. Needs to house a dual tv tuner card like the Haupauge WinTv HVR3000
5. Case ideally needs to be desktop form, so i can stand a 17" tft monitor on it.
5. Would ideally like it to house a full atx psu with monitor power (female 3-pin) included.
6. Room for 1 x sata hdd, 1 x rom drive

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have finished putting together a media computer build that I hope is as cool and quiet as possible:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA785GPM-UD2H
CPU: Athlon II x2 240
HDD: 1.5TB WD Eco Green, partitioned for OS
OS: Windows 7 using MCE
PSU: Corsair 450VX
CPU Cooler (only if needed): Scythe Orochi
TV Tuner Card: Black Gold BGT3595 (when release next month)
RAM: 2x2GB Corsair DDR800
Optical Drive: LG BluRAy Player

All I have left to do is choose a case. I like the idea of the Remote Fusion Remote Max for its good reviews for low noise but have heard that the Silverstone SST-LC16M is an even better case - though quite expensive!

Can anyone vouch for either of these cases or suggest a better alternative?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

A:Recommended case for my HTPC build.

Here are some ideas...............
Newegg.
Try to avoid the microatx cases.
You really want something that can handle a full size atx power
supply to make sure you meet the power requirements for the
components.
Other than that,it's really a matter of personal preference.

Think the silverstone is expensive?

I have a HTPC case here, I purchased it a few years ago, they were going fairly cheap on a well known pc supplier website.

I was trying to place the dvd drive in the slot so it was pretty secure and aligned up well for the button on the front bezel.

has anyone seen this type of fitting before?

I have tried putting 4 screws each side of the DVD drive too it sits in there just not tight enough, if you hit the eject button a few times it would move about a bit.

any suggestions?

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have an Acer Aspire X1700 (Details
It's about 2 1/2 years old now. Came with Windows Vista, I upgraded it to Windows 7. Also has a newer video card than what came with it.

Anyway, The PSU fan is getting really obnoxious, it gets really loud (more or less like a lawn mower). I have taken the thing apart and have tried every suggestion given to quiet it down, which it does for a whole week or two. This is a small form factor PC, so to even take the power supply out you have to basically take out everything else just to get to it. I have looked for replacements but they are very obsolete. It's only 220W anyway, so i'd like something a little more powerful.

What I want to do is get a larger case that I can use the same hardware is (motherboard, drives, etc) and purchase a larger power supply for that case. 220W really limits the PC. The small case holds a lot of heat even with all fans cleaned and working properly. Even just taking a CD/DVD out that was in it is very hot. I want a case with better airflow than this one.
I really am not sure what kind of case to get that will meet my needs. I don't want anything really fancy. If possible I'd like to get it off newegg.com

Any suggestions would be great.

Now another question comes up regarding modifying the cooling of my case/ computer etc.

I was wanting to carve two 3 1/2" holes in the top of my case, for two 12cm fans. Now I know fully how to do this, however, I was wondering which direction the air flow should go. Should the fans blow into my case? (Like I suspect) Or should I have them blow out?

The orange highlights are the fans I wish to add. Which direction should I have the air flow setup?

A:Case airflow question before modifying case

I would have them sucking air out. Hot air rises, and the side panel fan will hit the VGA's mb, etc and spread out, also they are right next to the PSU. You wont have any really big difference either in or out , but I would have those two pulling the hot air that manages to make it to the top of the case out. and negative pressure tend to run a bit cooler overall.

Hi everybody!

First let me say, I have purchased a copy of Win 7 Ultimate upgrade from my university. I am NOT, repeat NOT, asking about pirated software. I am asking about a copy of Windows Ultimate 7 Upgrade.

I have had issues recently with my system. After a whole lot of BSODs and reinstallations, I have isolated the problem and subsequently relegated that computer to being a home theater PC. During the setup, I was installing Windows. When I put in the key, it rejected it. I input it about 10 times, each time verifying it, and it kept rejecting it. I have installed this copy several times before, and had no problems previously. This is a fresh install, and the installation went smoothly up until that point. I did let it sit for about an hour during the installation. It sat at the point where you put in the username/password and then the windows key.

What could I be missing?

Thanks!

I'm building a new Windows 7 HTPC and have, well primarily two questions:

1) What version of Windows 7 should I use?
2) How do I strip it down to the bare essentials?

I have Win 7 Ultimate on my current one and it just seemed stupid to have all those extra features on a PC that only runs Boxee and streams media. What I don't like is having a feature-rich OS running in the background that never is used. I assume using home premium is my best choice? I'd also like to strip down all the services that will never be used either, but I'm not sure which are essential or not.

The problem I'm having right now is Boxee tends to lag/lock up. Not a lot, but enough that I'm inquiring here. I assume it's due in part to windows using up resources in the background. The PC is a 2.4GHz dual core w/ 4GB of RAM, more than sufficient. It also does this more frequently when it wakes up from sleep or hibernation and I usually have to restart to get it running smoothly again.

I've heard you can run XBMC as a standalone OS. I've used it in the past, 4+ years ago, but the interface did not play well with my windows remote and so had to abandon it. I also didn't care for the layout/navigation either and at the time and loved how Boxee linked up with IMDB to get all the media information. I assume XBMC did it too (or now does it), though it never worked for me. Is there a similar thing like this for WMC too? It seems logical they would.

Any suggestions on my questions or a new direction... Read more

All versions of Windows 7 are included on each DVD of Windows 7 no matter what version you get. Depending on your product key it will enable which version of 7. There isn't that much difference between Home Premium and Ultimate If you do not require XP Mode or Bit Locker then Home is fine for you. What you can do with any version of 7 is to disable Aero Glass , which is video card intensive, if it is not required in Boxee,

For convenience, I have a couple of remote controls next to my bed, so that I can easily shutoff the computer and everything connected to it, when I get tired of viewing.

One remote simply puts the computer to sleep, which works fine, so far as it goes, but leaves the TV/monitor, DVD player, etc. running. So I put a remote controlled electrical switch in the outlet that the cable that powers all of these is plugged ito.

Unfortunately, when I shutoff all power, that defeats the sleep function, and after turning power back on, I have to turn the computer on at it's own power switch, and Windows thinks that there was a problem, and displays the boot options menu.

I was thinking about setting it to go into hibernation, instead of sleep, but that tends to create locked files on the hard drive, that I would rather not have.

I really don't care about whether anything is saved, or that it can continue where it left off, I just want an easy way to control it as I nod off, or want to wake to a movie. Can this be done without using hibernation?

my question is.... i have an ADS instantHDTV PCI tuner card hooked into the analog input (the other is for HDTV antenna) to my computer from the HDTV set top box. media center scans for set top box but will not let me go farther than the "IR reciever not detected" screen when setting up my tv signal. so in other words, my IR reciever/remote is not MCE compatible aparantly.
bottom line:
1. my short question is this is there a way to set up an HDTV set top box using MCE without the MCE remote/Reciever?

2. are there other programs that allow HDTV signals through my HDTV set top box?

3. IS it even possible or are there successful setups running in peoples living rooms using my set up?

Hi I’m hoping someone can help me with a problem I have a HTPC I built about 3 weeks ago. The components I used are as follows:

Case – ThermalTake Mozart SX with VFD (case fans replaced with 2 X Noctua 80mm)
PSU – Corsair 450w
CPU – Intel E8400
CPU Fan – Scythe Shrunken
MoBo – Gigabyte EP45-DS3
RAM – 4GB Rambo 800
GPU – ASUS HD4850
HDD – 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1
ODD – LG HD-DVD/Blu Ray combo
O/S – Vista Premium

I brought the various components from various suppliers and built the PC myself (I’d replaced GPU’s, RAM and PSU’s before but this was my first full build). All went well, and I did a bit of testing/checking after I’d finished – bios showed the CPU temperature at around 40c – 50c after an hour or more usage, and Catalyst showed the HD4850 at around 75c after light usage both of which I figured were acceptable for a cramped little case.

Over the past three weeks I’d been using it on and off, mainly setting up Vista and my other programs and configuring a couple of external TV cards. I had done some light gaming on it too, maybe an hour to an hour and a half at a time on a couple of occasions.

However this Friday evening I turned it on to do some gaming and played Fifa 2009 for maybe an hour and a half to two hours when the screen turned into a pixelated green frozen mess and the computer stopped responding. I turned the computer off and left it for a few seconds before putting it back on, there was no signal to the monitor and there were a couple... Read more

I have a shiny new Samsung series 6 LED LCD 40inch screen TV and I want a small Blueray capable HTPC. I found the ACER ION 330HT-BD with the following specs:
Intel Atom 330 dual core CPU (1,6GHz)
Nvidia ION graphics processor
2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
320GB HDD
Blue-Ray Combo drive
Wi-Fi, HDMI port, 7.1 Audio and a 65W PSU

Does it have the power needed to decode 1080p HD Blueray movies and .mkv's and show it at a high frame rate? For the book I'll probably be using Ubuntu as an OS. Any comment wellcome.
Thanks in advance.

A:HTPC problem

I read somewhere that the Nvidia graphics processor will be pushed to its limit and that 1080p may not be possible on some movies.

2GB of RAM may also be pushing it. On my first HTPC setup, I had 2GB of RAM and that caused me some problems, but i was also running a single core processor at that time.

IIRC, your biggest hurdle may be your choice of OS. When I first started looking at building an HTPC, I considered using Ubuntu. But at the time, 2 years ago, playback of HD movies (HD-DVD and Bluray) was limited for Ubuntu. It was possible, but not without jumping through a lot of hurdles. Not sure if that has changed and someone has developed an open-source player for commercial HD content.

I settled on using Vista Home Premium and using WinDVD to decode Bluray and HD-DVD.

Howdy y'all. Nice site I've stumbled upon here here, I'll have to do some poking around. Interested in learning how to debug my own problems eventually, but I do need some help now.

I've had my computer set up for over a year , and I'm having some real problems now. I'm using an HDTV as a monitor, and this computer is the only way I watch TV.

Half the time I don't know what happened, it's just rebooted and says something like 'grub rescue>' on a black bg white text screen.

When I reboot, sometimes I lose my display. Sometimes it goes to the bios splash screen, and then black. Sometimes splash screen, 'grub rescue>' prompt.

Just now, while I was watching TV, it blue screened, automatically rebooted, and I don't remember what happened next, but it didn't boot back into windows. After messing with it for a while, resetting, swapping cables, swapping inputs on the TV, I grabbed a VGA cable and used that. That worked, and showed a startup restore screen. The aspect ratio was 4:3 (black bars on the left and right) I followed the prompts, and it restarted fine, still on the VGA, in 16:9 now.

I read a bit on the forum before posting, there is nothing in my minidump folder. I checked, and the computer is set to do a complete dump, so I dono why it hasn't. I've bluescreened at least a half a dozen times in the past few weeks. My pagefile is manually set to 4000 Mib (or MB? I forget) maybe that's why? I had a 30Gig SSD as my only hard drive at install, so that's ... Read more

Well I'm starting to work on my HTPC / DVR setup. I picked up a (surpassingly) decent computer for $20 at a moving sale. Has a 2.8ghz P4 dual core in it, 2 gigs DDR ram and it had Gefore 8800 GTS dual slot graphics card, but I had to steel that to replace a my 9800GT graphics that died. And it has a 600 watt power supply & a DVD drive. No hard drives tho.

So now I need to put a new graphics card in it. All I need it to do is do video play back, and down the road its going to record video via an internal TV Tuner card.

So I'm looking for any recommendations on a video card. I do want it to have an HDMI out, and be able to play back full 1080p video w/o any issues. It will be hooked up to a ~55" HDTV I will be getting this spring.

Also would like it to be fanless to keep the noise down.

From some poking around on newegg my top pick so far has been:
SAPPHIRE 100292DDR3L Radeon HD 5450 1GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

So wondering any opinions on said card, and if it should be more than enough to do 1080p playback?

Thanks,

Folks:

I'm not real bright on networking and hope you will help. I have WIN 7 ultimate on my main PC, laptop and HTPC.

I would like to network in a blu ray that has dnla, but it is not wireless. It is physically located on top of my HTPC (Home Theater PC) and my HTPC has a wireless network adapter. The blu ray has (of course) an ethernet port.

A wireless router is hooked to the Main computer.

What is the BEST way of hooking up the blu ray to get a network and internet connection (other than running rj45 from the router to the blu ray)?

Is there a way, through a switch, hub etc to use the wireless connection on the HTPC to connect the blu ray to it? Cross cable maybe?

I've thought about a wireless AP/switch or a powerline network, but funds are tight. I would, however, do it right rather than cheap.

A:networking a blu ray and HTPC

You should be able to use bridge / ICS internet connection sharing on the windows 7 PC connected to the bluray

recently LAN sockets have been autosensing, so you may not need a cross over cable -
windows 7
---------
TURN ON ICS - for internet sharing - for windows 7
http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/bridge-network-connections-in-windows-7/

form a TerryNet post
Bridging two network connections:
Make sure the secondary connection has DHCP enabled.
Open the Network Connections folder from the Start Menu, Settings.
Select the first connection to be used in the bridge and highlight it by left clicking on it.
Holding the Ctrl key, select the second connection to be used in the bridge by left clicking on it.
Right click on one of the two highlighted connections and select Bridge Connections.

otherwise you could get a wireless range extender , i have a EW-7209APg , replaced now with a EW-7228 (which i have not tried or tested personally)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-EW-7...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1323898062&sr=1-1

it has 5 LAN sockets and connects to the wireless network - so you can connect LAN only devices like TV, bluray, PVR to the wireless network
thats what I'm using and stream video, music and internet to my PVR, TV and Bluray

Hello there! I've got a research grant that I plan on using towards building a decent HTPC to show focus groups stuff (oh, and to have a little fun myself ). This won't be my first PC build, but my first HTPC/Media Center build. I was wondering if there is anyone on TS (there's gotta be) who would recommend a processor for Media Center/HTPC. I'm thinking LGA775 Conroe E6750 Dual-Core right now. I am planning on having a decent HT projector hooked up to this, probably have Counter Strike: Source and COD4 installed on it too (I'm a huge geek I know) and will be doing photo, video, and music editing for my focus groups. Therefore I can't skimp out too much for the editing, and since I will probably be playing movies stored on the hard disk on the big screen.

Already have 580W PSU

thinking of:
8800GTS (possibly sticking it in my PC and my 7600GT in HTPC)
8 GB Corsair XMS platinum ram

Thanks in advance! -- TC

A:Best HTPC processor?

Anything in the 8000 series except the 8800GTX has big onboard HD decoding if you use specific programs, so that would ease the load on the CPU tremendously. But then again, any C2D is going to be able to software decode HD by itself.

CSS graphics requirements are pretty weak, and CoD4 isn't terrible unless you were planning on playing at 1920x1080. If I were you I'd consider how much I need to game, and then possibly drop the processor to something weaker and pick up an 8000 series card, even the 8400 has the hardware hd decoding.

Edit: I can't find exactly what I was referring to about the HD Decoding, maybe because I saw it back when the 8000 series was first released and it has since changed, anyway I was slightly wrong, it appears 1 8400 doesn't have the decoding, but its a mobile G version. pdf on supported cards here: http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/11036/PureVideo_Product_Comparison.pdf

I'm putting together a cheap HTPC. Will the Cooler Master Elite Power 400W fit in the Silverstone Milo? Also, will these two components work together with an LGA1155 mATX motherboard (ASUS H61M-A)?

Thanks!

It says it will however I would REALLY rethink using a pw supply with a 1yr warranty. That is a very low end unit.

Hey everyone! I want to ditch cable TV, so I'm looking to build a cheap HTPC. It needs to be capable of smoothly streaming online content such as Netflix and Hulu to my HDTV, as well as running Windows 7 Home Premium and WMC, and maybe the occasional DVD. I don't have a set budget, but I would love to build this as inexpensively as possible, preferably via Newegg. Thanks for the help!

I'm building an htpc running win7 and I want to use a ssd as my boot drive, it will only have the os, 32bit, and probably vlc media player on it so I am only looking at the 32 or 40gb versions. I like the ssd because it is quite, cool, and not power hungry which is just what i need. Any suggestions on which one to use? Also unrelated but what is the difference between the oem and retail versions of win7?

A:ssd for win7 htpc

I can't make a recommendation on the SSD, as I have yet to try one, but as far as the difference between OEM and retail, OEM is tied to the first machine you install it on (IOW, you can't move it to a different machine). With Retail, you can install it on any subsequent machine, as long as it is on one machine at a time.

Hi all, my PC (10 year old lol) has finally given up the ghost, so I have decided to build a HTPC which will sit in my TV cabinet as a replacement. I only want it for internet browsing, streaming video's and pictures from my phone and to play Blu-ray discs.
I do however want some degree of future proofing so I don't want to go cheapest of the cheap. Before I post what I came up with using PC parts picker, I would appreciate it if you could answer some questions I have:-

1) Intel i3 or i5? will a top end i3 processor be sufficient or is it worth the extra £40 or so for a lower end i5?

2) Am I better off with a cheaper mobo with a dedicated graphics card and sound card or a Intel H67 mobo that can do it all?

3) Should i have a separate HDD for operating system and one for storage?

4) If the answer to (3) is yes, should I use a SSD for operating system? If so why?

5) If I get a 1 TB HDD do I need to partition it? If yes, why?

This is all I can think of at the moment lol. My builds with slight variations are here - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/gollum456/saved/#savedbuild_989646

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Currently trying to decide if I should build or buy an HTPC. It will be used for HD video and music playback, not gaming. Any suggestions for a good pre-built HTPC?

Personally I'd forget AMD go for an Intel Quad core, and up the ram to 4 gig,
Also step up your PSU to 650w.

As to Motherboards don't stint, its the heart of the system. (I prefer Asus)

i need to upgrade an HTPC. I need a case, power supply, surround sound audio, and tv tuner and cable cards. could you help me by listing some including features of each and price?

A:upgrade a HTPC

There are numerous cases available. Everyone likes something different. In this case, it typically boils down to size and price. > http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Description=htpc+cases&N=100008308&isNodeId=1

Power supply will depend largely on the hardware used (ie: cpu and video card). If you use a new motherboard with onboard video, you should only need maybe a 500w model. Current recommended brands are Seasonic and XFX.

Audio is provided through HDMI, so the audio chipset or a sound card are not necessary.

TV Tuner will vary based on your source (ie: OTA or cable). For cable usage, look at the HDHomeRun Prime network unit. The "cable card" is provided by your cable provider.

Does anyone have pics of HP casemosd? I need ideas for a new HTPC project. My plan is to take my Gigabyte GA7ZMM and 1 ghz Duron which I jumper overclocked to 1.15 ghz. I also picked up an ATI All In Wonder 128 pro for 40 bucks. I also have a sterio to RCA jack converter. That and an extra 40 gb HDD, a DVD drive, and all of my DIVX movies shared on the network should let me:

Watch DIVX on my 22inch TV
Save TV programs
Schedule digital taping of TV shows
Pause Live TV
Get one of those WinTv Descrambler programs
Save VHS on my computer and convert them to DIVX
Plug in my my video camara saving all of the video digatally
Play Counter Strike on my TV!
Play any other games that will run on a 32 mb video card.
Give my DVD player to my sister and watch DVDs from my DVD drive.

Any Suggestions/Pictures of case mods for this BOX? I want to make it Black to match my TV set.
THANKS!

A:HP CASEMODS for HTPC

I added a desk to one corner of my living room, put a monitor on it, then added a gyration cordless optical suite (25ft range). Then I put the outputs to the TV using a 3 way switch. That way when we're not useing the PC on the TV, someone can use the monitor at the desk by simply taking the mouse and keyboard over to it.
I added a k-world TV/Tuner w/remote for recording shows. I use
Winamp 2 with the cdg plugins for karaoke. epsx for playing playstation, zsnes for super ninetendo, and a few more console emulators. IE N64, nintendo, sega, mame. A long USB hub with 4 10 button joysticks attached makes the ultimate game platform.
$4 joysticks w/10 buttons similar to consoles can be found here.

I also use a program called voiceflux to voice control the setup.
http://www.voiceflux.net/

And a program called modemspy to allow the PC to announce who's calling using caller ID over the TV's speakers.
Truster is used to create a lie detector that can be used on the modem telephone line.

Some home automation equipment on clearance from radioshack tied in with the voice control through macros allow me to voice control the lights in the house. Such as, I can simply say "living room lights down two" to dim the living room lights".

I'm not using any HTPC programs to run it. I've got win2000 on it, wi... Read more
