8TB Portable HD recommendations needed

Q: 8TB Portable HD recommendations needed

I currently use a Seagate 5TB portable drive to store basically everything (my Lightroom Catalog & photos, my videos, documents, music etc), so this means very little is stored on my Mac HD, and doesn't slow it down, especially when doing post-production on photos or video. The drive was formatted to exFat when I bought it, and this means that when I was travelling between home, work and college I could plug my drive into any machine (Win or Mac) I can access my LR catalog and edit my work anywhere.

However, the drive is almost full, and I wanted to upgrade to a larger portable drive (at least 8TB). However I am finding it difficult to find an 8TB drive that doesn't require an external power source. It's not a problem at home just plugging the power lead into a socket, but in work or college there often aren't accessible sockets within reach, so it's vital that the 8TB drive can do the same as my current 5TB drive and take its power from the Mac itself.

I did order the following: https://www.photospecialist.ie/lacie-porsche-design-p-9233-8tb-drive-usb-3-0#group5315
It seemed to fix the bill, because it's USB 3.0, although it has a USB-C socket, which I've not seen on any drives before. I think it's meant to suit people connecting to their Macbooks or phones. However after I ordered I discovered that the drive needs an external power source, and also I found a lot of reviews online on Amazon where people were complaining about the awful quality of the USB cables that shipped with the drive, and in some cases fried the drive on the very first use!

I also found the following, but again it seems to need an external power source: https://www.mymemory.ie/seagate-8tb...xternal-hard-drive-7200rpm-usb-3-0-5gb-s.html

Does anyone have any better suggestions please? And as I'm based in Ireland, anything shipping from The UK or The EU would be cheapest.

Thanks in advance for any assistance, it's much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a little embarassing but I recently learned that computers have an average life-span of about 5 years. I'm not sure how to check the age of my computer but according to a diagnostic program I have, the System BIOS Date is 02/09/2002 and the OS Installation Date is 12/01/2005 (I'm not sure which represents the age itself).

Over the years my family and I have accumulated about 7.13GB of documents, pictures, and music, which we would like to save to a back-up in case we ever need to replace the computer. Currently what I have are a few old floppy disks from almost ten years ago; these disks will obviously not be able to hold so much information, and there is a chance that most of these disks no longer work anyway.

I've been looking for information about ways to back-up our documents and from most reviews I've read, portable flash-sticks aren't always reliable as they can become corrupted unpredictably, or their moveable parts can break. The best option I am aware of is to purchase a portable external hard drive, but I don't have a clue which one is best to purchase and will have the longest life-span.

Assuming I'm correct about external hard drives operating something like floppy disks, we would probably plug it in once in awhile just to back-up files (maybe once a month) and occasionally use it to view older documents. When not in use the external hard drive would be turned off and unplugged from the computer and stored in a safe pl... Read more

I'm working on a project where I need something that can record a signal from a line in and then also be able to have a way to get that audio to a computer. It would be ideal if it could record the audio in some uncompressed format.

The signal its recording will be analogue, so it doesn't have to have a digital in. But it needs to stay digital after that. I think...

I am going to be googling and trying to find one. But I thought I'd drop the question here and see if anyone has some suggestions. Price isn't too much of an issue.

I guess the bottom line what we need is:

Something small, as in something you could hold in your hand.
Must have a line in.
Either a usb connection to a computer or a digital out.

I don't really want to go with a voice recorder, because we are needing better quality than I think you can get with a voice recorder.

Edit: I saw on cnet forums one guy was concerned that the R1 didn't have a mono mode. That reminded me, we need it to have a mono mode, the signal I'll be recording is in mono.

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'm completely new to these forums, so hello! I'm hoping someone out there can help me with the following problems. It's a doozy, and has completely gotten worse over the last few days. Please read on...

My computer at home contracted a particularly nasty virus. The computer initially ran slower than molasses (probably from spyware/adware/virus), so my wife and I have been attempting to fix this problem. It was totally *my* fault, as I went on a gaming website and it downloaded some content that's now choking the life out of the computer.

I recently attempted to install new virus protection. Now, the computer is telling me that the copy of Windows XP I have is an illegal copy (which is NOT true, it was legitimately bought), and that I need to validate the copy. My wife has the administrative privileges on the computer, so I could only get so far this morning in fixing the problem. Compounding problems are the anti virus program I installed is failing to initialize, and sometimes Windows Explorer crashes, and leaves me with just the background picture, but no desktop whatsoever.

The CD rom drive still works, albeit slowely (takes forever to load the contents of a CD). I am a complete newbie when it comes to these types of errors. We have a lot of stuff on the computer that needs to be saved, so a "do or die" reinstall won't be feasible, as we don't want to lose everything we have on the computer. I think... Read more

I've just been 'talking' extensively with the software side, & we basically came to the conclusion that my current ancient computer is on the outs & doesn't have long to live. It cannot be upgraded.
I'd like to build a new one from scratch. Although I'm a novice & have never tried this at home, I did take an A+ course last year so am not totally unprepared.
I've been browsing on Pricewatch.com...I'd like to buy a motherboard combo (P4, at least 2.0Ghz) w/ integrated sound (upgradeable), USB 2.0, DDR SDRAM, heatsink & fan, a case/power supply combo, a video card with at min. 64mb ram (I'm not a serious gamer) and a hard drive--at least ATA 100 & 40Gb. I'd just like any suggestions/recommendations/cautions from anyone who's done this before & really knows what they're doing, so I don't screw it up. I'd appreciate any tips anyone wants to give me on products, etc. Oh yeah, I'd like to keep my Win ME & load it on the new HDD, mainly because I resent the fact that Microsoft won't let me put XP on more than one computer (if this is a dumb idea, please tell me why) Thanks!

My laptop has only two USB ports, which quickly turns into a shortage given all the things that connect to USB. With literally thousands of hubs available, I'm hoping someone has some personal experience on the subject that they could share. Which manufacturers are more reliable than others? What types of hardware have shown to be ugly when connecting through a hub.

I need to get one, so if I have to go solo on this, I guess I'll be the guinea pig. I'll be buying like 10 at a time to try several.

Hi ladies and gentleman...

I'm fairly confident in that I'm not the only one who is wondering about which fans are reliable and whether or not they truly make a difference from one another.

I was just wondering, which 80mm fans, which 120mm fans, and which 92mm fans people recommend...

Thank you.

A:Fans - Recommendations needed :)

i may not have recommendations for 80 and 92mm fans but i just want to say a few things.

try and get a fan that has low dBa but high CFM. higher CFM is usually accompanied by higher dBa (more noise) unless its a 120mm which runs on lower RPMs but provide more CFM for the RPM because if its bigger fins.

on avg, i guess a 28 dBa is silent enough for most people (esp me) and dBa:CFM ratio arent so good on smaller fans compared to 120mm fans persay
avg dBA and CFM on 80mm fans are 30 and 34. having a few of these in ur case can get pretty annoying (maybe its jus the ones i had, they were ghetto fans by sunbeam)

sleeve bearings vs ball bearings
sleeve is quieter but less life
ball is bit more noise but longer life. its all up to u n ur preferences.

in terms of brands, im not so sure, jus dont pick a 2$ fan. u get what u pay for.

anyway im not sure if any of what i wrote make much sense... i need to go to sleep now lol gnight

- be able to search through e-mails and attached documents
- uses a database which can easily be extracted to Oracle
- GUI interface
- simple implementation

I've found a couple which looks like it'll provide what I need but I would like to get some opinions from many of you who might have implemented one.

Ones that I'm looking more closely at currently are:
- ThoughtTracker = but have no idea about the database export options
- Web Board = kind of costly hope to find something cheaper
- Forum = need a closer look
- KB = heard it's pretty good
- Personal Knowbase = ??? yet

I've built a couple of computers, troubleshot them when their was problems, had probably hundreds of hours of maintenance/gaming on them, and have loved every minute!
Building a computer is too much fun to consider buying one complete.
But it has been a few years since I have done this, and I am having some problems ferreting out the new boards, etc., and would appreciate some advice.

I am building a computer not for anything specific, but need it to have enough power and RAM to be able to play with pictures, and video if desired.

I was thinking about getting an Asus with an AMD processor, 3000-4000 processor, 800 MB front side bus, and 1 GIG of DDR RAM. I didn't know if the different types of sockets made much of a difference, these days. I have always run AMD, and don't know about the different kinds of Intel processors.

I have been told to get a hard drive, SATA2, at least 160GB, with a minimum of 8MB cache, I assume 7200 RPM minimum.

Case/power supply combination, I don't know how many watts is even considered normal these days.

DVD Burner- don't think this is a biggie as to which brand, but may want a multi-layered one for backup purposes

Along with the normal modem, there is a chance that this may be set up a a server for a network at my house, eventually. So, if I didn't get the components as an integral part of the motherboard, I would need enough slots to expand.

Finally, I know that I can make a real screamer for over $1000, but ... Read more

I know almost nothing about editing videos and get confused when I see the menus and controls in editing software. I don't even understand the terms. For instance, I don't see anything that looks straight forward to me as to how to open a video for editing. Instead, I see something that says "Open a Project" and I don't quite understand what to do with a video even if I do figure out how to open it in a "Project".

So, I'm kinda lost.

Here are some of the things I would like to do:

Join two videos together
Take out uninteresting segments that may be several seconds or several minutes long
Compress time, meaning in an instructional how-to-disasemble/reassemble video speed up time through repetitive identical processes, like maybe the removal of several screws.
Convert a larger MTS file to something much smaller so it can be easily downloaded and viewed, or attached to an e-mail
Remove a single frame from a video file to save as a still image
Brighten a darken a video
Color corrections

These are some of what I would like to do and if I am going to buy a software that will do these things and then learn how to use it, what would be a good one under $150? I've read a little about Adobe Premiere Elements and it looks okay; but, for someone who understands little about what he reads, I would like to have some advice from those who actually do this work regularly.

I just open WMM ... and Drag n Drop my vids

Most videos are too large to Email ... I use YouTube and Email the link.
Still frames from a video are usually poor quality ... (depends on what quality you need) ... I usually use a ScreenShot .. It's the same as WMM's Snapshot view

Other than these restrictions ... WMM is easy to use (and understand) and will probably do what you want to do .. (for free)
I do this regularly .. and WMM and WDVDM is all I use

I have a friend with an aggravating e-mail service. I've forgotten whether it is MSN, ATT or what. Every thirty days, she has to jump through some hoops or her e-mail is inaccessible. The "hoops" have to do with giving them a phone number to which they can send a text message (she has no cell phone) or sending some kind of e-mail to a separate e-mail address that she must use to verify something. Then her e-mail access is restored.

Frankly, I don't know the exact details of all she has to do as the last time I helped her with it was several months ago.

I have recommended she change to one of the other free services and I need recommendations on services that will NOT give her this kind of aggravation. I don't use a free service so I don't know which ones might or might not turn into a fiasco like this one has.

Some software publishers or authors offer both portable and installable versions of their products. (Kee Pass is one of them.)

Is it advisable to systematically prefer the portable version, when running it from a fixed drive and not a thumb drive, according to the logic that if it's possible not to write into the registry, it's better not to ?

I often try new software, and I'm concerned about long-term stability. I install and uninstall a lot, using Revo Uninstaller Pro. But I've come accross people advising not to use Revo or other fancy uninstallers, just to stick to the product's own uninstaller or the Windows function.

Also, I have set C-Cleaner to a daily auto-run. In the past, I used its registry cleaner quite regularly. But some people say it's better not to clean the registry at all.

So I figured the more applications could stay away from the registry, the better. Is this a correct assumption ? Are there any drawbacks to portable apps ?

Registry cleaner to me is a good thing as it removes the useless leftovers of programs that are left by their regular un-installer or some deleted files.

ANS1 > I recommended to clean registry as it improves performance and reduce junk in resgitry . 1. Does the portable version of SAS get updated regularly on their site? Or should I check for updates before I run it?

2. How does one go about verifying that the stuff SAS finds is actually bad or at least unnecessary and not something that needs to be kept?
Thank you!!
J

A:SAS Portable

1. Does the portable version of SAS get updated regularly on their site? Or should I check for updates before I run it?Are you asking about the program itself or the detection definitions? As a rule of thumb I make a habit of checking for updates every time I grab my tools to make a house call. 2. How does one go about verifying that the stuff SAS finds is actually bad or at least unnecessary and not something that needs to be kept?Research = lots and lots of searching sometimes.Welcome to the wonderful ever changing world of malware removal.

Just thought this would be a good place to announce.I just found out that the actual creators of SAS have released a portable version.as far as i can tell. the filename is always random, the extension is .com, and the definitions are up to date.check it out...http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html

For some reason when posting links to superantispyware, the part after the / gets removed when you click it. Just go to http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&cli...mp;aqi=&oq= and it should be the first link

Hi everyone,
I'm going on holiday soon, I have a very nice Fuji digital camera, I have an 256Mb Xd picture card with it, lots of pics you may say, actually it takes around 100 at 6 million pixels, less at 12 million, not bad however, last time I was on holiday the picture card was soon full, I couldn't take anymore photo's last 3 days.

My question, is there a portable disk that will connect to my camera via the USB cable which will allow me to download all the pics from the Xd card thus enabling me to empty the card to start taking more pics?
Any help and advice will be gratefully accepted,
Thanks,
Liza

Has anybody make a successful Win XP Portable with a thumb drive?

I have read many websites and "How To's" but to no avail... it is one of those things that I tell myself I must learn to do as it would make my life easier for those times when the computer has a virus or help a friend with a problem, etc, etc.

I was able to get one going with bartPE but it takes a long time to load the iso file.

If any of you have, can you point me in the right direction?

A:USB Win XP Portable

Assuming you'd even getting it working, it wouldn't be usable. The USB interface doesn't work well booting a Windows OS. The performance would be bad, and some sites claim it drasticllay shortens the life of the drive.

I'm not sure how this would help (if it were possible) for either situation. If a computer has a virus, either fight it directly or pull the drive and connect it to a working computer and clean it.

Hi All.

I was about to buy WD passport 500G when I noticed that they released a new edition and accordingly to the majority of the reviews on Amazon.co.uk Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB USB 2.0
it is a disaster. They built s/w into HD's ROM, so you cannot get rid of it by formatting HD (it is loading a virtual cd-rom every time you plug the HD in. Just like Scan u3 usb stick, although I think you can get red of this one (didn't try it b/c I like it)). Also it has nonstandard small USB connector/cable.

So, I will have to buy either previous edition while stock lasts or I found another HD that looks OK but I don't know anything about it.
Samsung S2 2.5-inch 500GB USB 2.0
Do you know anything about this Samsung HD? I found more or less good review on Tom's h/w but I would like to hear from "real" people

You aren't necessarily limited to the major brands. You could build your own by buying an external enclosure and then fitting it with the drive of your choice. I no longer buy WD/Maxtor, Seagate, ect externals. I just find an enclosure with good reviews and a decent price, then match it up with the drive I want.

I need some recommendations for a good SSD (laptop). Here are the ones I've researched so far with positive reviews.

Samsung 840 evo
Samsung 850 pro-series
Crucial M500

The 840 evo seems to have the best reviews but I'm still unsure... Any suggestions/recommendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks-

Just about any new printer is portable. What are you using it for?

I always shop for printers based on ink price. The cheaper the ink the less you will pay over time.

I need a new Harddrive. I have 4 right now, all internal (and I'd like to keep it that way.) I have a 1TB and a 500GB both SATA 3.0GB/s and a 200GB and 40GB IDE. The 500GB one is partitioned into 3 separate drives, 250GB, 175GB, and 40.7GB (the remainder). So in My Computer it shows 6 drives. I use the 40.7GB partition as my boot partition, I never store anything of value on the C: drive so it can stay small; there are 9GB free. I use the 175GB partition as my personal file drive. On this I put music, movies, pictures, misc. stuff, applications...basically everything that I want to keep forever; there are 90GB free. On the 250GB partition I put full movies (backups of ones that I own,) but I'm starting to delete them as I just make hard copies on disks; 144GB free. On the 200GB I put raw game recordings. Some of you might follow the game Halo or visit Halo.Bungie.Org, so you might have seen the news about the Cutscene Library being updated with HD versions of the cutscenes from Halo 1 and Halo 2, well that was me. All the recorded files from the cutscenes from those games go on this drive, as well as another game's cutscenes I'm recording, Halo Wars. These take up a LOT of space, especially the Halo 2 ones (almost 100GB); I have just 22.1GB free on this one. On the 40B drive I keep the rendered files from those cutscenes, after I cut and edit them out. The rendered files are 720p videos, so they're smaller than the full HD I recorded th... Read more

Hi I am running Microsoft Windows XP SP3 currently on a very old computer (its 10 years, awesome isn't it?).
However, i am bound by the low specs. of the computer.
It has Intel Pentium III processor 933Mhz, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard disk and a 24x cd-rom.
Can you please recommend a better operating system for my computer? I need an OS that can run on this computer, and that it can work well with browsers running flash apps and Windows Apps (i know Linux supports Windows stuff by using an application called "Wine"). So in general, i need an OS that is fast to boot (preferred), and it supports Windows Apps, and it works fine with a browser running flash applications. I don't mind the display and graphics, so long as it is not of those "old" looking ones like Windows 95/95/me/2K etc... Prefer that of Windows XP (those 3D-feeling).
I dont know if I am posting this in the correct forum but i cannot find a better one.
Thank you very much for your support.

A:Recommendations for a better OS

I'm wondering in what way you hope an alternative will be "better"? My internet computer is a laptop with 1.6GHz Mobile Sempron, so 800MHz when on battery. It runs XP SP3 with IE8, or Opera if I wish. So it's not necessarily a faster or much faster system than yours (a PIII was not a bad CPU), but it does have 512MB of RAM. I usually run with four or more IE windows, and I don't notice it running with any difficulty. Finding some RAM to take yours up to 512MB could make a worthwhile difference.

Using Linux and WINE is certainly feasible, but is more complex and you'd be looking to use an older or tiny Linux - your system doesn't even meet the minimum requirements to run the current Ubuntu for example, whereas it considerably exceeds the minimum requirements for Windows XP. I sincerely doubt if you'd find Linux and WINE to be "better" than your current setup.

Here's the deal - had one desktop computer crash today - tech was installing a PS and said it arced - fried the MB.

I need to replace the Desktop computer, also need a nice laptop computer to replace mine, and a low end laptop computer to give to my wife.

Here's the uses...for the desktop & upper end laptop - running Office 2007 and QuickBooks 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, Peachtree, MS Accounting. Responsive is a must - don't want to pay for extras that we don't need - we have MS Action Pack so we can install Office ourselves...

The low end laptop - is just something my wife can do so word processing, internet, etc. on as well as internet surfing.

Interested in specs - most interested in recommenations on where to go to purchase this stuff...would really like a 12 month same as cash deal - but if not I'll get a new credit card to throw it on and get the same type of deal.

Thanks,

Brandon

Well, I'm using NOD32 Trial which is the Firewall/Anti-Spam/Anti-Virus.

I recently looked at a topic where they were compared, and BAM, NOD32 Falls in the 0% category. I see that Comodo is the best one.

I need the ULTIMATE Firewall/AntiVirus/Spyware collection.

Requirements:

Must be FREE [no trials]
Protect against harmful threats

If you would, I'd like the bundle package like NOD32, but if that's not the case, I'm willing to get three/two seperate softwares.
Like:

Anti-Virus/Firewall and Anti-Spyware
Anti-Virus and Firewall/Anti-Spyware
Anti-Spyware/Anti-Virus and Firewall
Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus and Firewall [All seperate]

Thanks for the help.

I'll need the name of the software, and the website.

Note: Some websites, for some odd reason, do not work on any of my web browsers. So I may need a link from www.download.com, or one of those websites.

Does anyone know of a reputable place to purchase the software. I tried a site online called http://www.live-ware.net, and am now fighting to get back my money. Never got the software.

Also, if I ever find a place to buy the software, I also need the service pack 4. Will I be able to just download an upgrade to sp4?

Hi guys, I've been thinking about upgrading my graphics card as I've been experiencing some less-than-great FPS in newer games, and I'm starting to notice the lack of DX11. I play pretty much anything I can get my hands on, but currently The Witcher 2 and Black Ops.
The card I have now is Radeon HD4870 1024MB.

I have a relatively new PSU at 850W(Overkill, I know ) I'm not sure about the brand but I guess I can open it up if you need to know.

Motherboard
Manufacturer: ASUS
Model: P5Q-Pro
PCI-Express, x16

CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz

Memory
4GB RAM

So, I've been looking at possibly getting the Radeon 6950, or do you have some other suggestions? How does the different manufacturers compare i.e. XFX vs Sapphire?
Also, how will my CPU and Mobo hold up, or would I be better off replacing them?

Big thanks in advance!
