USB device not recognized on my laptop but recognized in other pcs/lap

Q: USB device not recognized on my laptop but recognized in other pcs/lap

Hello everyone..
Yesterday my laptop pushed a new Win 10 update, and all went fine, or at least I think so.
But today I see that my Sony WALKMAN - which I used with no problem until now, can't be recognized anymore.

Basically it just shows as (E or Usb Drive E: but when I click it it says "Please insert a disk into E:/" like there is nothing there.

Now the interesting part is.. if I go to Device Manager I see it and clicking on properties etc t says it's working fine.

But if I go to Disk Management, the Drive shows as 14 gb of unallocated space and it's greyed out.

However, if I put it on my brother's laptop, it works perfectly and it can be opened, music moved into it etc - it shows as Healthy - Primary Partition in Disk Management. So it doesn't seem broken...

It's the same on each of the 4 usb ports btw. But, other usb devices (2 phones, 1 tablet) don't have any issue and are detected.

What could have caused this? I tried the basic Disable/Enable in Device Manager and also Uninstall Driver.. It doesn't do anything, it appears back when I replug it in.

No change in Safe Mode and no change after sfc /scannow

If anyone has any idea I'd be happy to try anything to fix this..

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This problem is being reported by many forum members with many different USB devices. It seems that Windows 10 Anniversary is having problems properly recognizing certain USB drives and devices. So far, no one has come up with a clear fix for this issue but it sounds like it is clearly related to the Anniversary update. For the record, I did a clean install and have not had any issues but most of the people reporting this problem make reference to updating to Anniversary.

Hello,

I have a PC which is having a lot of trouble recognizing a USB data acquisition device. Starting from a situation where the PC *does* recognize the device, here is the basic pattern:

1. PC shows device in Device Manager under "Data Acquisition Devices".

2. If the PC is power-cycled via the power plug itself, the device is no longer recognized under Device Manager ("Unknown Device").

3. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Turn Off, same results as above, no longer recognized.

4. If the PC is power-cycled via Start Menu --> Restart, no problems, device recognized.

When the device is not recognized, unplugging and replugging the USB cable makes no difference to the situation. In order to correct the issue, I disable and then enable via Device Manager (which also involves a restart).

This pattern is extremely repeatable.

I am working with WinXP SP2, Pentium, 2.8 GHz, 504 MB RAM.

This PC was returned from a customer site - the PC and USB device are used in a machine my company manufactures. Apparently this issue just started happening one day. We want not only to correct the issue, but in fact to understand the root cause and ensure it will not happen again in the future.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

A:USB Device Recognized / Not Recognized based on shut-down method

You could try reinstalling the usb drivers.
JohnWill has fix that is worth a try

Johnwill's solution

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

I'm using an Acer Aspire 5100 with Windows XP installed. Due to malware or some other problem, and because I was due, I formatted my hard drive and installed XP. This is the first time I've done so with this laptop. I downloaded and installed drivers that appeared to be missing - my display drivers for my monitor, and for the wireless card.

Problem: I can hear no sound. The only sound that has played is a PC Beep. Windows does not recognize my sound card; the drivers are not installed properly. It seems that I cannot install them.

The PDF containing the list of drivers is here: http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/acerdrivers.cfm ; scroll down to Aspire 5100.

My sound is not working. Volume Control tells me there is no mixer, and everything dealing with my sound settings is faded out (there are no devices to select), and no options.

Here's my device mananger: http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/-FLCL-/DeviceManager-1.jpg

I have only updated drivers for the BroadCom Adapter and my Monitor/Display.

The driver I should have installed for sound, according to the PDF, is the Realtek Audio Driver v5.10.0.5257. I downloaded this, but cannot install it. Under my device manager, I have 'Audio Codecs' and 'Legacy Audio Drivers', but those don't seem to work. I cannot uninstall them, and windows will not let me override the drivers with my own.

Thanks in advance.

I tried replacing the hard drive on my Inspiron 9300 with a 200G drive.  The administrative computer tools in Windows XP recognized it, but the BIOS showed it as 130G or so.  I finally had to replace the drive with a smaller one.  I had the latest BIOS version.  Is there a BIOS fix that will allow the larger hard drive to be used?

A:Hard drive not recognized by BIOS but recognized by WINDOWS Inspiron 9300

Not on the 9300s that use EIDE (parallel ATA) drives, no - the limit is 137G in BIOS setup.

Had similarities on my pc.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
Hpe it helps!

I have a Fujitsu P1510D, XP Pro w/ SP2. Just received my NU USB2.0 DVD drive. When I first plugged it in it wasn't recognized, a little fiddling and it was... and Nero started to install. I stopped the installation and ran AVG to check for viruses. AVG ran fine, but when it stopped, seems the drive went *poof*. Nero's install screen was still up, but it couldn't find anything.

I've tried plugging it into both of the laptop's USB ports and into the hub, not recognized. Reboots with and without it plugged in. Removed "unknown device" in Dev Manager, plugged back in. Nothing. It doesn't show up as a drive, and each time I plug it back in it says the drive "malfunctioned". Tried going into Administrative Tools/Drive Management, but only the hd is there..

Tried System Restore. Interestingly, in going through the prompts, it said that no changes would be made to Device D:, though that drive letter wasn't there.

I've tried it on another laptop too, it says installing, ready to use, malfunctioning. Does this mean it's completely hosed and I should send it back, or is there something else I can try before I box it back up?

A:Solved: "usb device not recognized" on laptop

The fact that it failed the same way on two systems doesn't bode well for the health of the drive. I'd send it back.

Hello everyone,
i hope you can help me sorting out this issue that is causing me a hard headache at the moment.

I've bought this new Lenovo Z50-70 laptop with windows 8.1 preinstalled on it. Fresh new.

I'm trying to connect via usb a guitar audio interface (Line6 POD HD500) so i installed the drivers via the .exe setup file i downloaded from Line6's site.
The device worked fine on my previous HP pavilion with windows 7.

Now when i completed the installation, i connected it and i had this error:Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
I used slimdrivers to update all the other drivers, in case it was a conflict causing the error.
I checked via command prompt with command "pnputil -e" and i saw a driver from the vendor of the device listed, so it is installed correctly i think.
I tried all USB ports i have, 3.0 and 2.0 on one side of laptop and 2.0 on other side.

When on device manager, if i click update drivers and choose the "let me pick from a list of device drivers.." i don't see the company name of the device.

i saw that another guy posted a really similar problem on SevenForum and he figured out how to force windows to use the drivers but he didn't post the solution.. Here is the post: Can't get Windows 7 x64 to use the drivers I've installed repeatedly Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hello all. It has been a while since I've needed help but my run of luck has hit an ugly downturn. Moved my computer three weeks ago and had not plugged it all back together till last night. All these years I had used it without a password to log in but a few months back a tech friend expressed horror at this so I started using one. Last night no matter what I did it wouldn't let me log in, saying incorrect password. Today as I messed around again I went through the steps of asking it to reset password (even though I didn't have disc for reset) and realized it does not seem to be recognizing my internal drive. If one of my externals are on they come up but if I turn off externals I get a bubble that says 'No Drive. This feature requires removable media etc.' My drive seems to be running and the Windows logos do appear during boot. My keyboard seems to be functioning to type password, but when I hit F8 while rebooting I get no reaction, so cannot boot to safe mode, just goes right back to log in page. I have had mold/moisture issues in this new house but have had a dehumidifier running since just a few days after computer arrived here. However I do see some evidence of mold or dust in the case, not a lot but some. Not sure what the root of this problem is but I am trying hard not to panic. Any ideas?

A:Internal drive not recognized/password not recognized

Your tech. friend may have mis-understood when you need a password.
If you are at home and only you and you trusted family have access to you computer, there is no need whatsoever for a logon password.
The only time I have ever needed one is when I was using my own laptop on clients site when I was contracting and I would leave it on the desk over lunch.

I'm pretty sure that it isn't the first subject about it, but I didn't find any threads wich looked like mine, so I'm doing a new one.
Yesterday, I was browsing the Internet like everyday of the week, and my mouse stopped working, for no reason. It just does the "tadam" (sound wich is done when we put or eject an USB device from an USB port.
My first opinion was that my mouse had a problem, so I tried it on my bro's PC, it worked just fine. Then I tried, my brother's mouse on mine, and it didn't work. Hence, obviously, my PC is the reason of my problems. Nonetheless, my iPod synchronizes itouself on my PC, so there is some devices which work anyway.

I've had an issue that has been driving me nuts for the past few hours. I have a Dell Inspiron 537s tower on which ive done a clean install of Windows 7 x64. Everytime I plug in a USB device it gives me a "usb device not recognized error". I've tried every solution ive found (uninstall all usb ports, unplug computer from outlet, updated the chipset drivers, etc). NOTHING has worked.

If I disable "USB2 Enchanced Controller" (USB 2.0) in device manager, all my usb devices magically begin to work and install, but only at USB 1.1 Speed. This is a big setback for me. The strange thing is though, that my keyboard and mouse work regardless. Only things such as my webcam and external hd are "not recognized" or "malfunctioned". I've even tried Vista x64 and Windows 7 x32.

Does anyone have any ideas???

Test it on another PC. That will determine if you have a PC issue or a faulty drive.

And I hate to point out the obvious, but you should have a backup copy of all important data.

Hello everyone,

So, two days ago I was rendering a video on an editing program, and a notice came up saying I was out of memory. My external HD was in the computer at the time, because I put clips from there into the videos that I render.

Since then, USB devices that previously worked are working anymore (external HD; printer), besides my mouse. Whenever I plug one into the USB port, it comes up with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on the bottom right of my screen saying, "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

Does anyone know how I should go about fixing this?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop.

I have heard of people with this exact problem. Many of them simply unplug their computer and it is fixed. I have tried doing that, but I feel it may be different, since I have a laptop. I will try taking my battery out and leaving it out overnight (again) and will follow up tomorrow.

I have tried reinstalling drivers, and uninstalling the hubs in device manager as well. When I contacted Dell, they came to the conclusion that I need to reinstall the operating system...
Thanks,
Matt

I am at a loss here. Bought an HP deskjet 5440 printer yesterday and plugged it into my laptop through a USB cable. I get an error message indicating that my USB device is not recognized by Windows. I have tried installing the software for the device, I have tried uninstalling my USB's in device manager, I have tried replugging into other USB ports and am still getting the same message. I have searched the web for similiar situations, tried everything (I think). I am hoping someone can give me some help on this issue. I have tried the printer and cable on an old desktop with XP and it launches fine.

In desparate need of some help!

Thanks

Hey all,
I'm running win 7 64bit on a P6X58D premium mobo

I just build the computer and had a brand new SSD that i loaded windows onto. now none of my USB stuff will work
mouse/keyboard/thumbdrives/anything
none of them work, but when I plug them in windows detects them and just goes right away and says that they dont work usb device not recognized)

I've tried updating windows, disabling usb in the bios, turning off and unplugging and waiting a few minutes, installing all the drivers I can find for usb, nothing seems to work.

Please let me know if anyone knows whats going on and how I can fix it! thanks!!!!

Brand new install of M/board etc

Double check front (& rear) usb peripheral leads/connections. Could be wrong way around or connector misplaced & missing pins.

Did win 7 update all its drivers over the internet - not off your motherboard cd?

Are there any malfunctioned drivers in 'device manager' Try clicking on the very top icon and "scan for hardware changes" one or two drivers may be lurking and not loaded properly at first install.

I'm recieving the following error "USB device not recognized". I have attempted many fix recommendations I have seen posted aroun the internet with no luck. My usb ports were working fine previously with xp and vista installed on my system. I installed windows 7 and they were working fine until the very first update for windows 7 was installed. Since the update I have been unable to use any usb products(printer, iphone, etc...) other than my mouse and keyboard. I have attempted to uninstall the update. I have also attempted to install windows xp, vista, and windows 7 and have had no luck with any version.

I don't know what information I could provide that would assist anyone in helping me. If I need more info posted, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate any help provided.

This is getting irritating enough I am tempted to go back to XP. Every time I plug in a USB device to charge it, for example my GoPro helmet cam, or just have an empty USB cable plugged in to one of the PC's ports and leave it on my desk so its ready to
plug something else  - I get that P.I.T.A. message popping up every couple of seconds. It won't go away either, it just keeps popping up again and again.
I have the all the latest updates, including the latest service pack. I powered off the CPU by unplugging it for 5 minutes and it still pops up whenever I plug in a cable or a device like one of my pocket video cams just to charge it.
Is there a fix for this or not?

Hi,

I really understand how frustrating this is for you.  I would like to assist you to solve this problem.

According the issue, I suggest that you may try to upgrade your BIOS and reinstall the USB controller driver.

1.
Download the driver from the manufacture’s website.

2.
Go to control panel>administrative tools>computer management>device manager.

3.
In device manager, expand the "universal serial bus controllers" tree, and delete things from the bottom first, one by one, going upwards. Root hubs
and then host controllers. Reboot.

4.
Install the driver you download manually.

If the issue persists, please copy usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf (c:\windows\inf) from another known Windows 7 computer to problem computer.

Also I want to know some information about the power supply of your machine, for example the voltage your power-supply device, the quantity of your disk and CD-ROM.
If you use several HDDs or CD-ROMs, I suggest that you may try to uninstall some device and try again. Since I suspect this problem is caused by power supply.

In addition, please collect the hardware installation log file in the path of %WINDIR%\... Read more

I have an HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop running XP Home and a Toshiba E335 PDA. Up until a few weeks ago I was able to sync the two using Active Sync 4.5. Suddenly, the laptop is not reconizing the pda. I get an error message saying that "one of the devices connected has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." When I click on the annoying bubble I get an unknown device which eventually states that there are no drivers for the device. So reinstalled the drivers and I still get the same error. I've uninstalled the device and tried to reinstall in addition to visiting the Toshiba site and downloading the drivers from there. I can't rollback the drivers because it claims there are no drivers installed. It is extremely frustrating since it worked fine. I'm wondering if a Microsoft update might have screwed up things. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jean

Hello. This is frustrating me a lot.

Yesterday I finished working on a song with my M-Audio Keystation 61ES and switched it and my computer off. The next day, I go to plug it in and turn it on, and Windows 7 greets me with "USB Device Not Recognized, USB device has malfunctioned"

I have downloaded the latest drivers from the M Audio website, I have reset the computer (and turned it off at the wall), uninstalled the driver with device manager and manually selected the new M Audio drivers, added a registry key (http://www.ntcompatible.com/Desperately_need_help_---_USB_Devices_Not_Recognized_t32356.html), tried a different USB port, tried a different USB cable.

What happened? Why is the device suddenly not working today?

Running out of ideas, all help is appreciated.

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't sure where to put it.

For the last week or so I keep getting this error message in the bottom left hand corner of my screen.

"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"

After clicking on it I get another window which consists of "USB Root Hub (2 Ports) and a drop down of Unused Port and Unknown Device. I have attached screenshots of this to help.

The only things connected by USB are my Wireless Adaptor, Speakers, Mouse, Keyboard and occasionally printer. Everything seems to be working fine so I can't see the problem, probably something simple that I'm missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:USB Device Not Recognized

Go into the Device Manager and see if you see any yellow question marks. If so post a screenshot.

Try unplugging each USB item until the issue goes away seeing which is the issue.

It may be the printer coming awake from being asleep.

Last few days my tomtom satnav 520 has not been able to connect to my Acer Aspire 2920 laptop.

I persistently get the error message in Vista entitled "USB Device not recognized".

I've tried unplugging the power, trying all USB ports, un-installing the USB ports and re starting, and reloading the TomTom home software.

I plugged my Samsung phone in which didn't connect to it's software first time saying it was idle, after re plugging in a few times and scanning it eventually connected.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ5306UK Desktop PC with windows 7, which I have had for over a year with no issues. I recently went travelling for 6 months and on my return have this issue. I can't say for certain but I think it was working for a few days on return but it may have been from when I first started using it again so I'm not sure if this is from lack of use for 6 months or what.

Whenever I try to connect USB devices I get the message "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"

My USB mouse, keyboard and speakers still work fine. But whenever I try to connect my camera, my USB card reader, my Iphone or Ipod (So any other USB device I own) I get this message.

I have tried connecting my camera on a friends PC and this works fine.

Searching on the internet I have tried a few things, I have updated all my drivers, I have tried unplugging my PC for 30 minutes, none of these have any affect.

Another potential solution I have seen is to uninstall all USB devices using device manager and then to unplug for 30 minutes. I am unable to do this one as my mouse and keyboard are USB, and there annoyingly are no PS/2 ports on this computer, so can only get so far down the list before mouse and keyboard stop working.

I really hope someone has some idea how to fix this and it's not a sign that some vital part of my pc is dieing!

Thanks in advanced for any help with thi... Read more

I posted a similar message under Hardware, but am getting no responses, so thought I'd try here.

Main question: What would cause a relatively new HP Media Center computer to recognize other things inserted into any of the USB ports in the front (for example, a jump drive), but NOT recognize one device (a Lowrance iWAY 500c GPS car navigation device) that is readily recognized when it's plugged into a different computer?

The HP computer is a friend's. The "different computer" is mine, a custom machine from Puget Systems with a P4 on an Asus MoBo. On the friend's computer, we get a "bubble" message from the taskbar to the effect that the device is not recognized -- so it knows something is plugged in, but apparently doesn't have the driver for it. Her system is running Win XP and I assume (but don't know for sure) that she's kept up with Windows updates.

When I check MyComputer, the Lowrance isn't on the list. In Device Manager, it's listed as "Unknown device".

I'm wondering about things like the HP lists a pot full of drives because it has all the camera card slots, etc. in the front panel (I think the drives go all the way up to J:, almost all of which are "removable drives".

Any ideas?

Yesterday I was surfing on the internett when all of a sudden my mouse and keyboard malfunctioned. A small error message appeard from my system tray saying "USB Device Not Recognized". I don't know what could have caused this, but as I unplugged and plugged the mouse and keyboard back in they both worked again. When I use the computer for several minutes the same thing happenes again. Sometimes as I see the light go out from underneath my mouse I pick it up and it magically starts to work again, but there are still times when it doesn't start to work again just by waiting, and that's when I have to reinsert my USB devices to make them work again.
