External monitor/Brightness settings no longer working

Q: External monitor/Brightness settings no longer working

Hi, I have a np9770 sager laptop and about a day ago the brightness settings no longer work and external monitors I plug in no longer work either. My version of 8.1 is fully updated with windows update. Nothing as far as I know changed but here is what I have tried to fix it:

1. Running driver sweeper in safe mode and reinstalling most recent drivers from nvidia.com
a. Running driver sweeper again in safe mode and installing drivers from the sagernotebook.com website
2. Uninstalling and scanning for hardware changes fo generic monitor in device manager
3. Running sfc /scannow in command prompt, nothing wrong
4. Updating chipset drivers from both the intel.com website and sagernotebook.com website
5. Rolling back windows to a restore point on the 12th of September, about 5 days ago
6. Creating another user account
7. Verified adaptive brightness is off in advanced power settings.

Odd things I found:
1. In device manager the gtx 980m display adapter has a warning triangle on it and this message when I double click on it:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
This has been constant throughout the whole ordeal
2. Whenever connecting a monitor as soon as I plug it in the monitor lights up as if it were going to work and just says hdmi not connected then goes to sleep. Nothing is detected in device manager.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, I connect my XPS 9360 to two external Samsung monitors (one at home and one at office) with a Cable Matters USB-C HDMI adapter. The brightness is excessive and contrast is low, so I must heavily change the controls on both monitors to get acceptable results. Before I was using an ASUS UX32VD with internal HDMI port and the monitors were ok in their default configuration, and brightness and contrast were better than the one I get with the XPS.Is there anything I can do on the Dell to change the brightness output on the external monitor? Thanks,Mattia

My daughter has a Yoga 3 Pro 1370 that has a problem controlling the brightness. The brightness is on full and cannot be changed via the keyboard or via Microsoft Mobility Center. There is also a problem connecting to an external display (no display is detect). All this use to work as recently as 2 days ago. The OS is Windows 10 64-bit April Update 1803. The current HD Grpahics 5300 driver is 20.19.15.4642 (3/22/2017) and the monitor driver is Generic PnP Monitor 10.0.17134.1 (6/21/2006). I tried updating both but it says these are the latest drivers. There is no driver rollback available (greyed out). The Lenovo graphics driver (10.18.15.4278_PV) and the latest Intel HD Graphics driver (15.40.38.4963) would not install (indicating not validated for this computer). I also ran the System File Checker and everything is fine. Any help/solution with these problems is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a dell latitude d620 and one day the up and left keys magically stopped working.. later on I had the brightest idea to see whats the lowest level of brightness possible, now I'm pretty much screwed because I cannot get the brightness back up to normal (which is a pain in the rear end) using the FN+UP combination.

I've searched the web trying to find a solution and cannot find anything, any solutions?

Help is very appreciated

Welcome to Seven Forums Nurein615. I think you can adjust it in BIOS with the down right keys (I hope they work!). Here is a (poorly made ) video that will illustrate how. Basically, F2 at boot, then video settings, then brightness. Don't go too bright as you have no left key to turn it back down! Good luck!

Hello Nikak mate one of my machines is a G750JM ROG and I find most little irritations like that are fixed with a simple run of these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs - you can leave out the /r switch if you think it not necessary.

Edit Forgot try updating the NVidia driver too

My stock Dell Inspiron 3531 laptop (circa December 2014) suddenly no longer recognizes external monitors connected via HDMI.
I have been using a couple of external monitors (one at a time, of course) for as long as I can remember.
The changes I have recently made are an upgrade of the BIOS from A01 to A03 (in an attempt to fix a battery issue). And, of course, monthly MS security updates.
I have been running Windows 8.1 for a long time (initially shipped with Window 8).
To rule out the BIOS upgrade, I back-flashed to A01 (and still could not get the external monitor to work).
To rule out monitor and cable issues, I connected them to another laptop (no issues).
My graphic card is Intel(R) HD Graphics w/ details as follows (ac. to GPU-Z tool):

Hi everyone

I have an eeepc 1000he with a viewsonic 22inch screen VX2255wmb. I have been using both for a while now with the dual screen setup without any problem. Since a couple days now, my external monitor won't show the optimal resolution which is 1600*1050. In the screen resolution set up page in windows 7, it used to highlight the optimal ones that respected the aspect ratio of the screen but now it just shows all of them and when I set it up at 1600*1050, I get an error message on the external monitor saying that the configuration I chose is out of range. Now the highest resolution I can use is 1400*1050.
I dual boot with windows xp and I don't have this problem with it. I didnt use any driver for both Os, just plugged the monitor in and it worked.

Anyone has an idea?

Thanks in advance!

According to ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

the only Windows supported and with a video driver is XP. You could try to install in compatibility mode for XP, but it probably won't work.

My external HDD no longer works with USB 2.0. Whenever I connect I get the message saying this device can perform better if connected to a USB 2.0 port. I have had this HDD for about 2 years now and it has been like this for a good year or so.

When transferring data the speeds tend to be around 1MB/second (if i'm lucky).

I have another External HDD which works fine with USB 2.0 so my ports do work.

I am running Windows 7 and have recently done a fresh install.

Hello, I have two Yoga 2 13's - I think both the 59403750 model. Both have the same specs. In one of those Yogas the brightness keys - "F11" and "F12" - do not work and it is full 100% brighness all the time. In the other (good) Yoga they seem to work OK - at least I can get the brighness down a few notches. When I press and hold the Fn key to get F11 or F12 to work the *seem* to do what F11 or F12 would do normally - e.g. in a word processor or browser. So it seems maybe just the brighness function of those keys are not working. Lenovo has calimed that this is not a hardware problem and they are not responsibile for it under warranty. I have done a little reading some time ago and seen something similar that was maybe fixed by installing updated video drivers. Well, that did not work - as of a couple months ago. At the time I also updated the BIOS - again no luck. Any ideas /inputs you might have are appreciated. Thank you.

I have an external hard drive that has stopped working.

It is actually an internal hard drive in an external enclosure. Here are the details:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400 GB. Model # ST3400632A. Adaptec enclosure. I believe that it is about 4 years old.

The hard drive does not seem to be working at all. When it worked, you could hear it spinning and the enclosure would get warm. Neither occurs now. Further, the indicator light on the enclosure flashes from blue to purple.

I am less concerned about it working again as I had already planned to buy a bigger hard drive. But, at minimum, I need to get the data off of it.

Any suggestions?

A:External Hard Drive no longer working

Sounds like the drive has failed. This could be due to the circuitry in the enclosure or the hard drive itself.

To diagnose this, remove the hard drive from the enclosure and hook it up to the internal wiring in a desktop PC. Alternatively buy a USB Hard Drive Adapter (about €10 from Ebay), this will allow you to connect it to any PC by USB. Then see if you can access it.

Hi, having some really frustrating issues with my laptop and had to create a profile on this site as nothing seems to be working. I have an Acer Aspire running Windows 10 (version 1511, OS Build 10586.36). I have been travelling for a while so haven't updated for quite some time, I think it was an update from a few weeks ago. Most things seem ok but seems to be a problem with the USB drives. Prior to the update, I had an external mouse and four extrenal hard drives (1 NTFS, 2 exFAT, 1 HFS+ which I connect use with Paragi HFS+), all of which worked fine. However, after the update, the external mouse works fine but only one of the hard drives (I think an exFAT one) appears in Windows Explorer. The mouse still works when I connect it. All the drives show up in the Devices list (and I can eject them). I have both USB 2 and USB 3 ports, neither work. The hard drives all still work on my girlfriend's Mac so there is no hardware problem. A quick search online seems to say that I should change the letter on the hard drive but when I go to disk management to change the letters, I get an error along the lines of 'The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-tp-date.....' It then tells me to refresh/restart, both of which I have done. I have even tried to run as administrator and then I get an error saying the path is not specified or something like that. I have no idea where to turn now. Can anyone help please?

Okay so i have an external hard drive, western digital, almost exactly a year old. i was tagging/playing.organizing some music when things went really weird. I wasn't able to access certain files, files and folder were undeletable because they were not there according to the hard drive. I was having write permission issues with tagging, so i "took ownership" of the folder i was trying to edit. i have no idea if that is what did it or not, but after unplugging and replugging my external, it no longer shows up in explorer. I get the device disconnected/connected sound when i unplug/connect it and there are no unusual sounds coming from the device.

This device has a lot of important information on it that is only partially backed up. Pictures/Music/School Work/Documents.

i tried plugging it into my laptop running linux, but nothing at all happens.
i tried plugging it into my laptop running windows 10, it "installed" the device, but like my PC, i only get the alert sounds upon plugging and unplugging.

i am really hoping that it isnt the device's hardware that is the problem and that i somehow changed permissions and made it hidden... i know this is a longshot, but i could really use some help!

i went to look in Disk Management a second time and this time i am getting an alert.

A few months ago my Western Digital USB drive stopped working on my Windows Vista Desktop. It runs Windows Vista Home Edition SP2 32 bit. All of my other USB devices work. The WD drive worked one day and stopped working the next. I did not improperly disconnect it. I have tried it in all of the ports with no luck. The drive is fine because it works on other computers.

In device manager, it is highlighted as not working properly. The error on it says it is not working because windows can't load the driver, code 31. I have tried updating the driver, but it tells me that it can't update because I am already using the most recent driver. I have tried pulling the original driver off the drive itself and from WD's website.

Try the free USBDeview. No installation required.

It will list all USB devices currently connected to your computer, as well as all USB devices that you previously used. You'll see your WD USB drive in the list. Uninstall it with the program so Windows can redetect the device. You'll see the options by right-clicking on your device in the list.

Yesterday I wanted to watch a DVD so I set the option so extend the displays and to make the TV my main display, i also went into the sound options and set the HDMI device so the sound would be on the TV.

This morning however when I try to change the sound back to the monitor I get a message telling me that the peripheral isn't plugged in, the thing is though it is plugged in and I now cant get the sound to go through my monitor again.

How doI solve this issue as it isn't showing up in the sound options dialogue box.

Hi, I am having some issues regarding my laptop's brightness. Firstly, when I turn my laptop on, the brightness is always on pitch black so I can't see the screen. I have been on to all the settings and put the brightness as max for both when it is plugged into power, and not. And yet each time I switch it on, the brightness isn't on and the screen is completely black. Secondly, my brightness buttons are the wrong way round, so the button I should press to reduce the brightness actually increases it, and the button I should press to increase the brightness actually decreases it.Again I have looked in the settings and can't find anything there to change them - I haven't downloaded or installed anything that should have changed them, I literally use the laptop for microsoft office and the internet. Please help

Hello,

Please be gentle, as I am new to the forum and not the most well-versed in all things tech! The external hard drive that I have been using without a problem for the past year is all of a sudden not being recognized by my computer. I restarted twice, and each time it recognizes it initially, but the moment I try to open a file or copy something onto the drive it shuts down and cannot be recognized again. When I restarted again after that, the hard drive isn't recognized at all. Autostart doesn't run, and nothing appears in My Computer. It doesn't appear in the device manager (or, if it does, not under anything recognizable that I would reasonably believe would be linked to this device), and I don't see anything happening in the event manager when I plug it in or take it out. I have tried it multiple times in all 4 of my USB ports. I tested the hard drive on another laptop, and it works perfectly--no hitches, the files open properly, and nothing appears corrupted. Please help? I am the black widow of electronics, but even this is new. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inpsiron 1525. My external is a WD Elements SE Portable, and I am about to lose my mind. Thanks!

A:Previously Recognized External Hard Drive No Longer Working

I had a similar issue with an external drive when another USB device was plugged in. The hard drive worked fine in my desktop or in the laptop with no other USB devices connected but not when another device was plugged in. Probably a power issue or something. Could that be the issue with yours as well?

The other thing is, just in case your hard drive is on the brink, it might be best to back anything important up in that other system that can still read it.

I have a very frustrating problem and hope someone can shed some light on the situation for me.

I purchased a Maxtor Basics 500GB external Hard Drive STM305003EHD301-RK a while back and after having some niggling issues with it for the first couple of weeks it had been working perfectly, no problems at all. I had formatted it and the drive was recognised everytime it was plugged in. I'm running it on my Acer T650, P4, Win XP Media Centre Edition SP3.

This weekend I was visiting some family and wanted to take my drive with me so we could watch some films and listen to some music etc. Nothing out of the ordinary.

So the drive would have been unplugged for the duration of the journey. (It is not the first time the drive has been unplugged.) It was wrapped in a towel and in my rucsack so it was protected from knocks/impact etc.

After getting to our destination I unwrapped it and immediately plugged it in ready to go. The green light came on as usual. After plugging it in to my brother in-law's laptop (he was running Vista) it loaded up, only to say that we needed admin access rights when trying to go into the music folder?!?!

Ok, so we tried the movies folder. It let us in but wouldn't play any of the movies! But it let us copy one of them over to his laptop which then played perfectly.

After removing it safely I thought it might be an XP/Vista compatability problem and tried it on the home desktop they had.

This time, nothing happened at all. No green lig... Read more

Hello smackemback66. Welcome to the Forum.

I am going to guess that this has to do with the chipset or webcam driver not being fully compatible with W7.
I'm guessing that there was not a W7 driver to download for your laptop?

Hey All,

I'm having issues setting this up. I have a laptop that I use as my main workstation using a 27" monitor as the main display, while the laptop display is off. The resolution is 2560x1440.
I have the resolution and scaling setup perfectly for the few programs I use the most.

My problem is when I want to use the Laptop unplugged from the 27" monitor (say...on the couch) the text and icons are tiny and tough to use just to browse email and the web.

Is there a way to have my Laptop screen have a different scaling or resolution when its away from my desk so it's easier to use.

And will I be able to plug it back in to the External Monitor with previous Large Monitor settings intact?

Thanks in advance,

Hello,

With the help of the members here, I was able to successfully reformat my computer's hard drive (my computer is a Gateway Pentium 4 running WinXP SP 2). However, there were a couple of problems I ran into straightaway, the largest of which being that I had no sound hardware installed, and the Entertainment folder was completely empty.

Unfortunately, before I could ask for help about that, I ran into an even more severe problem. I have a second internal hard drive that I unplugged from the motherboard and the primary hard drive during the reformatting procedure. When I plugged it back in and turned on my computer, it make the usual noises it makes while starting up, but when I turned on my monitor, I got the red, green and blue bar and the "No signal" message I usually get just after I've shut down my computer, then the entire screen turned black and after a few seconds, the blue power light turned orange, as if the monitor was in "standby" mode.'

I checked the connections running to and from the monitor several times and made sure that they were as secure as they could possibly be, and even tried unplugging the secondary hard drive again on the slim chance that it might somehow be contributing to my monitor's problem. Nothing I did made any difference. I was convinced that my monitor had just chosen an extremely inconvenient time to die when I tried hooking a different monitor up to my computer, and the exact same thing happen... Read more

A:5510: Audio from websites not working when external monitor is also hooked up. (But Skype sound still working)

Hello. What might be happening is after you connect to the external display, the audio switches to HDMI audio. To get the audio to emit from the laptop's speakers again, go to the Windows Sounds dialog and make Speakers the default playback device (right click). You might have to do this every time you connect an HDMI cable.

if you have a monitor plugged in that displays correctly, then all you have to do is set your resolution to 1024x768 and set the refresh rate to 60hz (by using the old monitor), you could also try a system restore to get any settings that you have messed up.

So. I was using dual monitors until recently, as i found out my motherboard has been malfunctioning, i swapped it out for something remotely identical so everything i had inside would still run, changed 4gb of ram to be the same type also, but with all the settings it wont work. I tried swapping either on the motherboard or on the video card, they wont do, only the first vga type display ( need an adaptor) works, if i connect any of the monitors on the second slot of the video card or on the motherboard, the second screen will stay black, and the led flash blue, opposed to saying no signal as its not connected. So overall it shows its connected but the pc either from desktop or from the amd center ( using a radeon 6900) wont detect the second screen, Ill update more info and specs if needed, please help ~

Hi, I'd try reinstalling the amd/intel switchable graphics software package on the link below as it mentions a fix related to the f2/f3 keys. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74717.exe When this has completed, restart the notebook. Regards, DP-K

Hey, I do not know exactly when it started, but i can no longer set the brightness on my laptop. Not using the function keys, not in the energy management tab in the control panel. A google search turns up something about reintalling video card drivers in device management, installing the driver from hp website and upgrading the video card drivers from device management. None of these options worked. Is there anything else i can try to fix this? Best regards,Jurre

I am running vista on my laptop which has an Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT video card. I have a dell external monitor which I know works because it works on my windows 7 netbook.. I plugged the monitor in and nothing. I have all the settings set up to run an extended desktop and made sure it was "connected". Windows is recognizing there is a monitor but it wont "turn it on".. I can draw other windows over in the direction of the monitor as if it were on but its just black... any ideas???

A:External Monitor not working properly

Laptops usually have a key combination to enable the external monitor.
It's usually the Fn key and one of the Function keys. They usually have a picture of a monitor or two on them.

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. I have two external monitors both Asus with VGA ports. I successfully configured one of the monitors to the VGA port. However I have not been able to successfully get my 2nd external monitor connected using the HDMI port. I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the monitor but it's not working. To rule out any issue with the 2nd monitor, I was able to get it to work by disconnecting the VGA cable from the first monitor and connecting it to the 2nd monitor. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? Thanks in advance! Leslie

I have a Dell laptop & have been trying to use it on a external monitor but its not working. It has worked in the past but now its saying cable not connected on the external screen. FN f8 isnt working for it anymore. Any ideas how to get it working again ?

A:Solved: External monitor not working

What colour is the led on the monitor - red or amber
Have you checked the cable to another computer -
I do not think with that message cable not connected it will get you very far, but is there anything showing in device manager when the cable is connected
OR
Click "Control Panel" and select "Personalization."
Click "Display Options." Select "Identify Monitors" to locate the external monitor. Click the drop-down menu and choose the external monitor to switch the display.

Does any FN and F work for other functions

Hi, first post!

I have an ASUS VW246H, 24 inch external monitor connected to my two laptops, one via HDMI, and another via DVI (viewing one at a time ofcourse).
My new laptop (Dell xps 17) has had the dual display running smoothly until right now (it was running just few hours ago!) and now it doesn't work!!
I plug in the HDMI cable, the monitor detects that something is plugged in, turns black for a sec, and then just displays "HDMI No Signal".

p.s. in the past hour I did boot into my second partition (Ubuntu, Linux) which doesn't have a dual monitor setup but I by accident left the HDMI plugged in. I 'think' I have done that several times before without anything going wrong. Dont know what happened this time!

p.s.s. I have tried to go in monitor settings on windows 7, look at the NVIDIA control panel and it cant find any external monitors. I have also tried toggling Fn + F1 which is the external display switch.

A:External Monitor not working suddenly

Ok that was odd.. I plugged the laptop into a different HDMI cable, going into my tv, and it worked.
Then I brought it back to my monitor and tried to plug it into the HDMI cable, and it worked!!!!

odd..

I have the USBc to HDMI connector from Dell, to connect my XPS13 to a second LG monitor.
I have been using it without problems for 2 years. I use it every day. Same setup.
Since friday 29/12 it stopped working.
I tried to connect my laptop to different monitors. I did driver updates and even tried to roll back my Intel driver. I disabled the WIFI. (and tried putting it on airplane mode). But nothing helps.
I guess some of those latest BIOS updates, HD driver update, ... caused the problem.
Can somebody please help. It's urgent. I need my laptop+second screen for my work.

I have a Windows 10 laptop and an external monitor. The monitor was working perfectly for a few weeks, until one day I switched on the laptop to find that the monitor was no longer working. Going to 'Display Settings' only showed one monitor, and pressing 'Detect' said 'Didn't detect another display'.

After updating all drivers, then purchasing new leads and adapters for the monitor, I still couldn't get it to work. Then I stumbled upon the 'Hardware and devices' troubleshooter which, after restarting my computer, made it work.

Less than a week later, I just restarted my machine and suddenly it's not working again. This time, the troubleshooter isn't fixing it. Every time, it just says to restart my computer to finish applying updates/drivers but restarting doesn't help.

Anyone have ideas how I can fix this?

Cheers

Hello,I have ThinkPad T480 and want to connect Lenovo L2250p external display (it has only DVI and VGA inputs) The display is currently equiped with miniDisplayPort to DVI cable (I used it with older T450)I borrowed USB-C to MiniDP(female) adapter, and try to connect USB-C Thuderbolt 3 port, but the signal didn't went through. iThe adapter must be working because in office I tried to connect the same way also Projector beamer (equipped with MiniDP>HDMI adapter) and signal went through. I thought the USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port is capable of sending DVI signal, or is there too many conversions/adapters connected? Does anyone know what can be the problem? Thanks a lot.

Ever since updating to Windows 10, my Yoga 2 Pro (model name 20266, Mfg Date 14/08/2014) is unable to connect to an external monitor. Tried a few TVs and a projector using the micro HDMI port. I've connected other computers to each of the monitors so I know they work. I understand how to use WIndows intimately (35 year old software engineer at Google, been using WIndows 20+ years), trust me, this is not a case of me forgetting to use Windows key + P or anything like that. The mirco HDMI port itself (physically) is fine and was working great until the day I downloaded Windows 10. So unless it happened to spontaneously stop working on the exact same day i upgraded to WIndows 10, it's not a hardware issue either. The issue is that the external monitor is simply not detected, no matter my attempts to play with the display options.I have also run the Intel driver update utilty, but it refuses to update the driver because it says it's detected manufacturer drivers and tells me I should get the manufacturer drivers. Ok, so I went to the Lenovo Yoga 2 support website, the latest driver they offer on that site is 10.18.15.4240. The driver update doesn'tmake a difference. Now, if you go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, right click and selected "Update driver software..." it will download an even newer version (10.18.15.4279). This doesn't work either. I've search all around the web and cannot find a solution. I'm debating in... Read more

My laptop Lenovo Flex 2-14 has been working fine with multiple displays for 2 years. A few days ago, it stopped recognizing the HDMI output. Notes:The Intel Graphics driver is the latestWindows drivers are the latestIssue:1) When the external monitor is plugged in, I cannot open any folders or the windows explorer. As soon as I unplug the external monitor, the folders can open.2) The Intel HD Graphics control panel's interface is not usable as can be seen in the screenshot below. I have tried restarting, but that does not help. Unplugging the external monitor does not help either. It seems to be permanent. When I click on other menu items of the Graphics control panel such as "Audio settings", the whole screen is blank. Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution to it?Intel HD Graphics Control Panel - Lenovo Flex 2-14

I have a HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook (Model No. F5C93EA#ABU) originally shipped with Windows 8.1 64 bit.About 2 months ago it was updated to Windows 10 64-bit with no great problems (update in place).Recently I observed that the external HDMI port no longer works when trying to connect to a TV. I have since tested many combinations of external monitors and cables together with other laptops and proved the problem is with this laptop, We have updated windows 10 to the latest aniversary update to attempt to fix the problem and have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Intel Gaphics Driver which is currently at version 10.18.15.4248. This the latest driver is as posted at the HP website and tends to the be the version that is also automatically installed via windows update. I notice that actual baseline release date of 10.18.15.4248 is August last year. Intel have many later non-OEM versions but this is the latest HP OEM version. I am at a loss on how to fix the problem and have had to resort to a plugabble USB3 to HDMI adapter to provide external monitor support.

Hi - Using IBM T42 with External Monitor. When booting Win XP Home SP3, both monitors work, then laptop monitor goes blank. External monitor works fine. I have tried everything I can think of - resetting displays, changing ATI Radeon mobility 7500 driver, disconnecting external monitor, Function key combinations, booting in safe mode. Nothing works. But when the laptop boot starts, the laptop monitor works for a few minutes then shuts down. Seems like a switch is not working properly.
Any ideas as to how to solve this problem. And the laptop monitor was working fine until a few days ago, the last time I used it alone, i.e., separate from the external monitor.

Many thanks in advance.

A:Laptop Monitor Not Working External Fine

Being that the ibm t42thinkpad is an older model its very possible that the whole screen will need replaced as the ribbon cable, inverters, or backlights might have gone bad.replacing the whole screen might be easier to do than trying to find the individual parts needed.

Good evening,I left the notebook downloading an HP update and then turned it off after it was complete. The following morning I turned the notebook on and there was no display but I could hear it booting up. I attached an external monitor and it works fine. There is no notebook screen identified in the screen settings (where I used to get 2 before) only the external monitor is available.
