Laptop won't power on. How to check battery?

Q: Laptop won't power on. How to check battery?

My friend's laptop won't turn on. It doesn't start to boot or anything. My first thought is it's either the battery or the A/C adapter but I'm not sure how to check those without having swappable pieces (which I don't have.)
I took the battery out and tried to power on with just the A/C adapter plugged in and same as with the battery in, only thing that happens is the little light with the lightening symbol flashes 3 times. Also the little light where you plug the charger in lights up while the charger is in. Would the laptop power up with just the A/C adapter plugged in and no battery?

Preferred Solution: Laptop won't power on. How to check battery?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, my girlfriend in Beijing has an Acer Aspire S3 latop. She bought a new battery for it a while back and told me it was no good. I was in Beijing recently messing around with it and found that actually the battery is fine (lasts for >4 hours) but when unplugged and running on battery power, the laptop often just cuts out suddenly (loss of power). I took the battery out and had a look and cleaned all the connections but they seem fine.

The next part is the strange part and which I hope might give someone a clue as to what's going on...

When it cuts out, it will never restart again unless the mains power cable is plugged back into the laptop. As soon as that's done and the power button is pressed, it starts up again and the cable can be taken out immediately (I mean immediately - you can plug the cable in, push the "power on" button and pull the cable back out in less than a second) and it will start up and run fine on battery again... until the next time it suddenly cuts out without warning.

Because any unsaved data is lost and because the laptop cannot restart without the power adaptor, this very portable and light laptop is now reduced to having to be kept at home all the time and plugged in, which is exactly the opposite of what she bought it for.

Anybody have any idea what the problem could be or suggest some tests that could be done to find out? She took it to a local computer shop but the guys there had no idea.

Thanks in advance for any adv... Read more

Recently I noticed that the amber LED on my HP Probook 650 G1 flashing constantly, even when the laptop is powered off.   The System Tray battery indication is 100%, fully charged, when on AC power and 100% on battery power shortly after undocking.    I find the Probook won't power up if AC power is not available (no response when pressing power button) but remains powered when I remove it from the docking station.    Have the electronics that control this LED flashing and power up when not on AC gone bad?    Is this an indication of other failure? thanks

Hopefully someone here can help solve my issue, because I'm practically at my wit's end with it. I recently ran Lenovo's Updater program and it installed a few new things on my Laptop... I don't remember all of them, but I know one was a BIOS update, a Firmware update (can't remember specifically for what though), as well as a few programs I was missing on my computer (like Lenovo Power Management, just to name one).  It's something I hadn't ran for a good year, so I'm sure everything was using an older version! In any case, it seems after I did that, many of the games on my computer started playing worse.  Long story short, after checking out a few programs to monitor what my computer's doing (CPU-Z, and even Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility), I noticed that my Laptop's suddenly only using a portion of what it can do. For example, the core speed should be able to go up to 2.6ghz - 3.3ghz... but strangely, it's staying at a solid 1.20ghz the whole time. No matter if I run any graphic-intensive games or do anything else that might need some extra power, it stays exactly at that number. Here's the weird thing though.  If I unplug my Laptop and let it run off the battery?  It shoots straight up to the 2.6ghz-3.3ghz, as it's supposed to.  As soon as I plug it in again, it drops right back down to 1.20ghz and many of my games run like crap again. I've tried looking up solutions online, but I've found nothing that helps. I've tri... Read more

If the connector fits (it may not - the older systems use a much larger barrel connector than many of the new ones), AND the power (wattage) is equal or greater, yes.

It's a Dell part number, but there is no way to know if it's original to the system.  If it is, bear in mind that system is about four years old, so the battery is likely at or near the end of its expected lifespan.  In fact if it is original, and the battery still works - that's quite a good thing, since they generally last 2-3 years.

However when I plug the power cord in I do get a light for the battery charging,(yet to see if battery will take a full charge and come on) but so far nothing. Any ideas as to fixing this or why this could happen. can I get files from laptop harddrive to my pc? Remove laptop hard drive and connect to my pc? Thanks

A:No Ac Power or Battery power to Laptop

Sounds like a major failure in the laptop.

You can buy adapters for laptop HDD to Desktop IDE drives, quite cheaply. That will allow you to access the files on the hard drive.

USB cases are also quite reasonable for laptop hard drives and give an easy way to access the drive.

One year later, I'm back with another problem! I just hope this is the correct forum...

I purchased the laptop I'm using about two years ago. For those two years, I have never removed the battery, but have used AC power nearly always, with the exception of a few quick trips and a couple of hours once every week or two. Initially, the battery lasted about 2 hours on a good day, with Wi-Fi enabled. A few weeks ago, that was reduced, seemingly instantly, to about 5-10 minutes. Upon doing some research (which I should've done when I first got the laptop), I'm pretty certain that the battery is about to kick the bucket.

What worries me, though, is how the laptop seems to be becoming increasingly hotter these past few weeks. Despite the fact that my battery hasn't been involved in any recalls, the paranoid side of me is hesitant about leaving it in for much longer. For now, however, being able to afford a new battery is up in the air (that's a nice way of saying not an option). So, I attempted to remove the battery and use only AC power. About three seconds after I turned the laptop on, it shut off. Upon a second and third try, it wouldn't turn on at all. I let it rest for about 30 minutes and tried again; it lasted long enough to show the Windows XP logo (ten or so seconds) and again shut off. I popped the battery back in, and it turned on without a problem.

So I'm left wondering: what's wrong? Has my laptop become dependent on batte... Read more

A:Laptop won't run on AC power without battery.

I've seen a number of laptops that won't run without the battery, so I'd say that could be normal. A laptop shouldn't damage the battery pack with it plugged in continuously. My wife's laptop has been plugged in most of the time for a year, the battery is just fine. The charging circuit in the laptop should not overcharge the battery.

If the laptop is getting hot, you might consider blowing the dust out of the fans, which is a major reason for overheating of laptops.

Hi all,

I have searched and searched for an answer to this problem, but can't seem to find a solution. Maybe someone here has a new idea...

Basically my computer suddenly stopped running on battery power. It had been working just fine until about two weeks ago. Here are the bullet points:

The computer won't turn on with battery installed unless the A/C adapter is also plugged into it. And, once on, the computer will shut down immediately if the A/C plug is pulled out.
The battery is relatively new (less than six months old.)
When pressed, the button on the battery itself indicates the battery is healthy (all lights illuminate, none flashing).
The meter on the computer indicates the new battery is working properly. When left out for a couple days and then put back in, the dell meter shows that it has lost 1% power and goes about charging it then successfully reports 100% charge after a while.
I've tried two old batteries (known bad, just haven't gotten around to taking them to be recycled) while using A/C adapter to see what the battery meter on the computer says... The meter displays an empty battery with a red x at the bottom when either of those is put in.

What I can't understand is why is it only working one direction? The battery will accept a charge from the computer then won't run off that charge later?

Other suggestions I've already tried, but haven't helped:
Verify computer has latest bios update.
Check for bent contacts.... Read more

I've had this a while but never got around to getting ideas on the prob. 4 yr old Toshiba Satellite, Vista, updated OS/drivers... Most of the time it only boots with the power plug removed. After I get the windows loading scroll, I can plug it in and it boots fine. If plugged in while booting, it only gets to maybe the boot loader sequence and then powers off. If I run the boot repair, it may boot with power for a few times but always reverts to booting only without the power plug attached. Tried changing some system power settings with no change. I guess I haven't looked at the CMOS for anything odd. Battery seems to be charging/discharging OK. Boot load script seems normal. Any ideas?

It goes like this: my laptop is normally plugged in, high performance power settings, battery taken out. Every once in a while I put the battery in and use it with normal charge/discharge cycles, power saving settings. Now it somehow happened that when I put the battery in and windows booted up I had no sound whatsoever. Chrome or AIMP2 are not recognized in the volume mixer, and skype notified me that it was unable to access the sound card. When I put it to sleep and then woke it up again the sound came back. I then followed the same steps: shut down windows, booted up, no sound, put it to sleep, woke it up, sound available, a few times and always with the same "results".

Does anyone have any idea what's going on ? This never used to happen before.

A:I have no sound when my laptop is on battery power

Reinstall the sound driver and see if that makes any difference. Sleep and what does or does not work after waking can be driver issues.

How is it booting? From a "cold" boot or booting up from Hibernate. If its booting from Hibernate that can be the cause of the problem (shouldn't be but can be).

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Win XP. It's about 5 years old. The last couple of days, when I have it plugged in, the battery indicator icon acknowledges it's on AC Power, but the battery is still draining and the laptop turns off. I have not changed the power settings at all, but I checked them and all seems fine.

The battery is the original (came with laptop) and the AC adaptor is fairly new (purchased this year). This laptop did have problems with the AC port coming loose, which I fixed. Twice. First by soldering it back onto the motherboard, then by changing it alltogether.

As it stands, when my laptop is plugged in and turned on, the battery drains until it turns off (about an hour). The battery will charge when the laptop is off. The battery charge indicator (led) light turns OFF when I power up the laptop. It turns on again, when I power down. The battery will only charge when the laptop is off.

Is this a battery issue? An AC jack issue? An AC adapter issue? Does anyone have any experience with this? Sorry for length, but I am trying to foresee any questions anyone might have.

A:Toshiba Laptop & Battery Power

I would say it is most likely a battery issue if it is original, there is circutry in all laptop batteries that control charging and discharging and for safety. My guess would be start you search here, the battery is probably due for replacing anyways. If the adapter can charge it off then the adapter should be OK.

A:Laptop keeps switching to battery power

It's a very common issue with laptops, and I'd get it corrected BEFORE you end up with this! This is the second of two laptops I've seen in the last year that people ignored the advice to deal with the loose power connection.

As to how difficult it is to fix, that's going to depend on the specific make/model of laptop, and how much disassembly is required to repair/replace the jack.

P.S. Yes, the MB was destroyed and needed to be replaced in both laptops.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (circa 2003). I know my laptop battery has been drained for a while and I was almost solely relying on the AC adapter's juice to power my machine. Recently, I lost all power to the laptop. I thought perhaps my battery had finally had it so I bought a new battery. Well, then I couldn't charge my battery, so I bought a new AC adapter. I still have no juice. It looks like the AC adapter is working (the light is on it to show it's getting power) but it's not transferring that power to the machine.

I think it may be a bad connection between the adapter plug and the laptop. I don't know how involved of a fix this is.

Any suggestions on what type of fix might be needed? Is it better to just scrap this laptop and get a new one? Thanks for your help!

also I might just order a new motherboard... however, I don't know if it's the battery. i'm afraid to check to see if the batteries good because I can't find information on the PINs to touch with the multimeter.
i don't want the battery to explode.. what should I do??

please help. thanks.

Hi All, I have an HP ZBook 17" laptop with 32GB Ram, 120GB SSD and 1TB secondary drive. The laptop battery started losing charge everytime I used it on battery power alone, when i plug in the charger it just holds the current charge and does not charge the battery any further. I proceeded to check ANOTHER ZBook charger to check and it was still the same. My I.T department at my company requested me to remove the battery to test it, but they still have it. When i removed the battery the laptop was switched on and continued to wwork with just the charger and no battery. Upon leaving work I shut down the laptop, once I got home I unpacked the laptop and plugged in the charger. Immediately upon doing so the power button LED and Caps lock LED continue flashing and i don't know how to pwer it up WITHOUT the battery connected. My other laptops are all capable of working WITHOUT the battery inserted. Please help as i need to work and would like to turn on my laptop.

I think I had a power surge kill my laptop (no protector, power was out and fuse was tripped), there was a burnt odor coming from the power supply.

Could this have affected the battery. Is it possible to check or have the battery checked (it was new) to see if there was damage done?

I recently bought a Sony Vaio VGN-NW110D laptop computer for my father. It came with Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium Edition. I notice that, if I shut down the computer (not standby, but shut down), it still uses battery power. For example, it could go from 100% down to below 80% battery power overnight. Is this normal? Or is there a problem with this laptop? If the latter is true, what could be the problem? Thank you.

My toshiba sattelite BP55W-B5224 laptop would not turn on or show a charge light when plugged in to ac power and would turn on unplugged using the battery. It was diagnosed as bad battery. I replaced the battery. It worked for two days and then went dead again. I did not use it enough to have drained the battery. But, if it was plugged in it would not turn on or show the charge light and wouldn't come on when unplugged either. I removed the battery and now it works when plugged in to ac power.

What could possibly be the source of the problem and how do I troubleshot it to solution. thanks.

Hi all

I'm using a thinkpad T60. I think my battery is out, I've been checking it through the ThinkVantage and it said battery ok but should discharge and recharge. I did that and it was ok for a few weeks but power gauge always says 80%-90% and less than a hour, it goes into hibernation.

Now, without AC, my thinkpad can't be switched on. I leave the ac on while the battery is still attached to use it. The battery icon is orange and blinking. When I've shut down, I remove the ac plug. I've never removed the battery before since I've used this thinkpad 4 years ago.

Is this harmful to my thinkpad, all my data and stuff?
I'm reluctant to remove the battery in case dust gathers around the exposed portion. I'm also reluctant to buy a new battery as I'm thinking of getting a new netbook, those 10" type of laptop.
What's the best way to manage and keep using this thinkpad without a new battery, or is it a big NO NO???

Please help, I'm not very IT savvy. Thanks in advance!

My battery wound up dead after charging a while ago. So, I used the laptop without a battery with it plugged. Then it just shuts off as if it were over heating. Now, it never wants to come on. There are no lights indicating of life or charge and I tried different methods to bring it back to life but none work.

If you can answer this, you will have earned my undying admiration. Well, in truth you already have but still.... this is strange.
My brother has a Dell Latitude C600 which recently started giving him the blue screen "memory dump" crash. He had the hard drive replaced because that is what the tech told him it was. Still does it but he just noticed something.

He ran it for over three hours this morning on battery only and it was fine. then he plugged in the power cord and within 15 minutes, it crashed.

He charged the battery and tried the same thing with the same results only quicker to crash once he plugs in the power cord. It seem obvious that something is amiss here but I haven't a clue. I thought the power cord charges the battery which then powers the computer.

Anyway, this is totally unfamilar to me. I have heard of power cords failing to provide a charge but this is a new one. Any thoughts?

Thanks as always to you

About 4 months ago I performed a number of upgrades to my 4 year old Lenovo SL400 laptop.

I upgraded to a Seagate Momentus hybrid drive, upgraded my CPU, installed new RAM, purchased a new 9-cell battery and performed a clean intstall of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (the computer came with Vista - Windows 7 was a retail upgrade).

I had several BSOD crashes which only happened when running on battery power. I was sure the battery was the culprit and RMA'd to the vendor for a replacement. I still have the issue with the replacement.

I notice a screen flicker a second or two before the crash. About half the time the computer recovers without crashing.

I've attached the dump files and system health report.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A:BSOD when running laptop off battery power

I saw the ThinkPad Display error in the 7-17 performance report so I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for my display and I no longer have that error. I've attached an updated report.

Anyone have an idea what is causing my crashes? I'd love to be able to use this machine without being tethered to the plug.
