Update error 80246008, Restart on Shutdown, dll startup error

Q: Update error 80246008, Restart on Shutdown, dll startup error

This is a family member's laptop. It is a Dell Inspirion N4110 running Win 7 Home Premium x64
They gave it to me complaining that the shutdown button restarts the computer and will not actually shut it down.
So I checked its preferences, they were fine. I went into the registry and changed the value from 1 to 0. That didn't work. (I changed it back)

I noticed on start up there is an error (it still pops up) that says there was a problem starting c:\users\blah\AppData\Roaming\homsp.dll The specified module could not be found.

The I decided to run a virus scan. Their McAfee had expired so I uninstalled it along with some odd software from a company called SysTweak or something and installed AVG and Malware Bytes. Those full scans came back clean except AVG found something and removed it but it wasn't of any significance to this issue.

I decided to check Windows Update, it wouldn't run. So I tried to restart it in Services and it wasn't there. After some piddling I found a program that supposedly fixed the problem for you. It was called Fix WU. I got it Softpedia. After running it the Windows Update service was back. I was able to install some updates and thought all was well. Then there were more updates. I tried to install them and got an error 80246008.

So I then realized BITS wasn't listed in the Services, either. I found a download (? [SOLUTION] Windows Update and BITS services missing) that contained reg files for Windows 7, installed it, ran the bits file and then restarted the PC. After login the homsp.dll error came up again and I started Services and BITS still wasn't listed.

So out of curiosity I tried to update anyway. "Most recent check for updates:" said "Never" and so did "Updates were installed:" When I clearly did update something before the restart. Anyway, I clicked Install updates and it started working! I went to Services and BITS was listed! I waited until the updates finished and restarted the PC. The error still pops up at login, the BITS and Windows Update are still in Services (thankfully), and two out the many updates failed - Security Update for IE9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2757638) and Cumulative Security Update for IE9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2809289). Oh and shut down still restarts the PC. What's going on? Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm in no way a expert on such things but I did notice something you found.
SysTweak

Their is no way of knowing all the things a program like that has done. If I had to repair this computer I would start with a repair install.

Give this a good read.

Repair Install

Then I would install MSE for a anti virus and use the built in Windows Firewall.

Little note: If you didn't use McAfee's online removal tool their could of been left overs of McAfee on the computer when you installed AVG and that would be just more problems.
Any anti virus program you remove I recommend using their own removal tool found online.

Hi all! I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, but I've been stuck with this issue for a while now. Last July, I came here and got help to remove a rootkit off of my computer (Great help, by the way!), but seeing as it had infected my services.exe, part of the fix was to get a new copy of it, or something around those lines; this will come in to play later, I think. Anyway, its been a LONG time, my last update whenever I try running windows update, it runs for a bit and tries to receive the updates, but then stops and displays a message saying it failed to update, and gives me the error code of 80246008. I've looked this up, and I see that it possibly has something to do with the background intelligent transfer service. The thing is, I would just like some help here on what I should do. Could someone maybe help me out with what's going wrong with the updates? Any help is greatly appreciated. (Also sorry for the wall of text).

I purchased an Asus G73 A1 in June and haven't done anything to it. I have posted in the asus support but have still not heard back from them. When I try to do a windows update I get error code 80246008. I found threads that the error code has to do with BITS. Per the thread I went to services and found that BITS failed. When I tried to start BITS I get error 126. I am not too computer savvy but I want to keep it up to date. Hope that someone can help.FYI I have Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my Windows Update.
I don't know how long it hasn't been working ..

I followed the Troubleshooting on the Windows website that tells me there is an issue with the BITS but I can't find that listed in the Services ..
I've been trying to look and see if my system has been infected by malware or anything like that as well, but nothing has been found yet.

Not really sure what to do, and my system not being up to date is preventing me from doing alot of things

Any help would be appreciated...

Thankyou.

My computer for some reason has not been able to do updates for several weeks because I keep getting the above error. When I click on it to get help with this error it tells me I need to change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) by opening Administrative Tools, then Double-click Services, then Right-click the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service, and then click Properties. On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic (Delayed Start) is selected and Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it's not, click Start. However, when I click start it tells me it can not start the BIT service and gives me an error code of 2147024894.

Now a few weeks ago my wireless internet would not work even though I had it turned on so I went into device manager and there were a bunch of yellow exclamation points next to all of the wireless and networking hardware names in the device manager. I manually went through and repaired them by having to reinstall all the adapter drivers to get my wireless working again. Now I don't know if I did something wrong then but since that time my computer has no longer been able to do windows updates.

Hi

I'm having a problem installing windows updates.i was told reason it's not updating is because the BITS (background intelligent transfer) is not started. So I went into control panel, services, found bits and clicked start and it started and immediately stopped with this message,

The background intelligent transfer service service on local computer started and then stopped. some services stop automatically if they are not in use by any other services or program's.

Bits is set to automatic delayed.iv tried typing in to command prompt sfc /scannow and all other command prompts on the net.tried restarting, rebooting after everything and still nothing.I think I might have virus I'm not sure.reason I think that is every time I go on to the laptop the firewall does be turned off.

All normal things are working on computer and I can access Internet perfect but slowly.ov searched on all other forums and tried everything I could but still nothing.

Hi Everybody -
I have 8.1 & I'm the Administrator (& only user). For the last few months I haven't been able to get my Windows Updates to download. They look to be downloading and installing but after quite awhile they give me a 80246008 error. My research tells me that I need to have BITS running. (For those who know as little as I do it's the Background Intelligent Transfer Service).
So I went to service.msc which shows that BITS is running on automatic. (I also saw something online about COM+EVENT being a possible problem. That is also running on automatic. Then I saw possible problems with Remote Procedure Call. That is running on automatic).

I like to check my Resource Monitor and found that BITS is not running and I can't get it to run. Windows Update is running in processes and is pulling 25% CPU. I never noticed because my computer didn't slow down. I can't find COM+EVENT in the Monitor. Windows Update is Wuauserv and next to netsvcs.

So off to Process Explorer. Under a svchost.exe I found 13 items in the one containing Windows Update. It's also pulling 25%. I can list the other 12 programs there if you need to know them. I didn't look for BITS since it's a service.
So BITS is running in services.msc and not in my Resource Monitor. I keep trying to start it there but it won't start. In researching this I only found instances where BITS needed to be turned on. I found nothing that said BITS could be running in some places and not others.

Hello lovely people

So, I'm having the brilliant Windows Update Error 80246008, which basically means my updates fail to install.

I have ran through the Windows Help and Support, which tells me 'To change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)'. However, when I look in the 'Services' section, I have found that BITS does not appear.

After realising this, I opened up the command prompt and ran the System File Checker tool to 'troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files', however it gets to 79% and then reads;

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I am now stumped

Any help is hugely appreciated, I have 70 updates waiting to install

I have been having the Windows update problem ( Update Error 80246008) since June. I found this thread

and followed all the instructions, still the BITS service doesn't start. When I try to start the BITS service I get the following error message

"Windows couldn't start BITS on local computer. For more info refer system log and refer to service specific error code 2147024893".

When I looked at the System event log , it's filled with errors about BITS service. The two errors that appear repeatedly are

1) The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error %%-2147024893

2) The BITS service failed to start. Error 0x80070003

Another thing that I noticed while following Step 2 of the tutorial is, The folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader is present in my system , however I can't access it even using the Admin account. When I try to access it by double clicking on it, I get the following error message

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader refers to a location that is unavailable.

I have also followed the "Windows Update Posting Instructions" and the link to the CBS log file folder is given below. I have posted the link instead of attaching the file as the file size is more than 8 MB

I tried a manual update, and I got error 80246008.

So I went to Administrative tools >>> Services >>>

And I found that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is missing. Nowhere to be found.

I've already run FixIt and all that jazz. No luck, because it won't finish.

Virus/Malware issue? Where can I go from here?

I have been having issues running windows update on a Vista Home Basic laptop with SP1 installed. I started to become suspicious when I wasn't receiving windows update requests for awhile. I checked and found nothing since the end of August 2008 has been getting installed. Before this point I was able to update without issue. Whenever I try to install the updates for my laptop I get a 80246008 error. I have tried all of the Microsoft solutions including running the batch file to create a new softwaredistribution folder. However I still receive the error. Everything seems to be working including BITS which when I tried to run the BITS repair tool I was told it did not need to be repaired. But I still have the problems.

I also tried updating through the online site and that did not work as I received a 80070002 error code when the presence of the activex control was being checked. I only have the one user setup on the laptop and it is an admin account.

Any ideas?

Hey all,
Windows updates and Microsoft Security Essentials won't update, Windows Update giving the error code 80246008. Looks like cause is the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is unable to start.

Error when trying to start the service:

Quote:
Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer service on the local computer. For more information review the system event log. If this is a non-Microsoft service contact the service vendor and refer to service-specific error code -2147024894

Things I've done:
1. Ran sfc /scannow (no problems reported)
2. All steps here: Windows Update Error 80246008 in Windows 7 - Fix
3. Attempted this: You receive an error message when you try to download updates from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site, or when you try to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service
But when doing "regsvr32 qmgr.dll" results in an error:

Quote:
The module "qmgr.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Make sure that "qmdr.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.

Any ideas?

A:Update error 80246008 with BITS unable to start

Ok problem solved. I've seen this issue around the net in a lot of places with no real fixes, so I'll post mine.

What was happening was that BITS was unable to start. Apparently "-2147024894" translates to an "Access is Denied" error.

The folder "C:\Users\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader" seemed to have permissions issues that have plauged the rest of my Windows 7 experience. Thus, I fixed the problem using the "Take Ownership" program from these forums on that folder. Take Ownership.

The BITS service was able to start, and I can now download and install Windows Updates.

I hope that this information will help others with this problem.

I have been trying update my mother's laptop to service pack 1. It runs on Vista Home Premium, has all the latest patches (except for SP1). Well, Windows Update was just downloading SP1 when I remembered that I ought to set a manual restore point, so I cancelled the installation process (the welcoming window of SP1 had already appeared, just before the licence appears, and that's where I cancelled; nothing had even started installing yet). Okay, so I set the restore point, and now Windows Update doesn't work. The first time SP1 failed (because I broke it off), it had an error code (C47 or something) which is due to someone breaking off the installation. Everything clear. But when I tried to run Windows Update afterwards, I simply could not install SP1 because it would not download it. The Windows Update panel would simply not react when I clicked on "Download" - I'd be forced to terminate the Windows Update process via TaskScheduler. When I retried downloading SP1 (four times), I had terminate it this way each time, and the Systems report would say that Windows Explorer had crashed each time. The error code for these SP1 failures is 80246008. I tried to restarts the BITS service as I read on Windows Help - no success. And the WindowsUpdate icon has stopped showing up in the system tray since I cancelled the first SP1 pre-installation attempt. I really don't know what to do! I'm afraid my mother's laptop will not be able to download... Read more

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 (32 bit) on iMac (boot camp)

Hello there,

I'm wondering if someone can help me.I was not able to run Windows update. I was getting "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running"
I finally ran a Microsoft utility which errored out but still allowed me to run Windows update. At least I thought it did.

Now I'm getting "WindowsUpdate_80246008".

I tried a couple of things online and it appears that I'm missing the BITS service altogether. I'm not a big registry expert and it appears there may be a problem there. I also saw another post indicating that the qmgr.dll file could be corrupted.

I'm attaching the result of what services are currently started on my PC as well as the registry setting for BITS as indicated in another post. Not sure what other information you need.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I've been struggling with my computer for months. When trying to download Windows updates it takes forever while it says it is preparing to install. Finally I get a big red X and the error code80246008. Windows says click here for the fix and then of course says it can't help. I realized that the svchost (netsvcs) that includes Windows Update is 25% of CPU usage. If I turn off Windows Update the CPU goes back to about 5%. I have so much room on my drive it wasn't noticeably moving more slowly. I know that there are huge MBs of updates. I've been doing this for a few months now and I can't remember how I got onto it but I think it's BITS. BITS is under the same svchost along with update. BITS looks to be turned on in every place but my Resource Monitor. I can't get it to start there. Otherwise Services.msc, Process Explorer etc seem to show it running fine but pulling a lot of CPU..

I tried the solution of doing something regarding net start bits and net start wuauserv. I know I did something before that but this didn't start BITS. sfc/scannow result is: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log. Maybe I should have started with this. I don't know a lot about computers and I don't know how to get into the CBS.log. I'd bet my Christmas presents that the corrupt file is BITS. I read something about having to get a new file from another computer to... Read more

I've been having difficulties in updating my parents' Vista computer. I've found possible solutions, and everything was going well, until I encountered error 80246008 (I was following this video to fix it: Windows update error 80246008 fix - YouTube). I was following this person's solution up until the Background Intelligent Transfer part. When I right clicked on Background Intelligent Transfer and selected Properties, I pressed "Start." However, when I did this, an error came up saying, "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Here is a screenshot of the message I got: http://i.imgur.com/WDZ0OPJ.jpg . If anyone could help me with this, I would be VERY grateful. This has been frustrating.

Hi,

For a while I have been having problems updating Windows 7 Home Premium x64 using Windows Update, getting the Error Code 80246008 (please ?Error Code 80246008? pic attached).

I decided to investigate this and found this Microsoft page:
Windows Update error 80246008 - Windows Help

Tried to start BITS but got the Error Code 2147024894 (please see ?BITS start error? pic attached)
I then downloaded WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab and ran it.

Tried first to troubleshoot and repair BITS but also some error messages surfaced (please see ?BITS troubleshooting errors? pic attached)

Then tried to troubleshoot and repair Windows Update but also got error messages (please see ?Windows Update Troubleshooting errors? pic attached)

Yesterday I did also a partial re-installation of the OS (only key files), using the OS image that came pre-installed with the laptop. This did not work. (I did a fresh reinstall of the OS just some 3 weeks ago to get rid of all the little bugs that had accumulated so far, which makes this situation a bit more frustrating).

Since none of these things helped I did what you state on the Windows Update Posting page:
1 ? Ran the SURT from the Desktop and it seemed to install a file. (please see ?Hotfix for Windows message? pic attached). It took about 20 mins or so to do it.
2 ? Did a sfc /scannow from command prompt, logged in as admin. (please see ?sfc scannow check results? pic attached)

I'm receiving a DLL error when I shutdown / restart my Windows XP box. While not disastrous in any way, it's just sort of irritating that my computer isn't running perfectly (yes, I'm a.nal like that )I've posted my HJT logs to see if anyone can find a problem with it. I've gone through and marked an asterisk (*) on the lines which I know are good, due to the software I know I've purposely installed on my system, but would appreciate any and all feedback, nonetheless. What can I get rid of from here to optimize everything?BONUS QUESTION: Strange occurrence - when I hit the '*' asterisk key on the keypad followed by the down arrow and left arrow in rapid succession (as I did below marking the lines), the CALCULATOR application will frequently pop up for no darn reason at all! This is incredibly annoying, and I've checked the properties of the calculator program to ensure that there are no shortcut keys associated with it, which would cause this to occur. Thanks for your time!Running processes:*C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe*C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe*C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe*C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe*C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe*C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe*C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe*C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\mainserv.exe*C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Su... I have just recently built this PC (first build) around the beginning of December 2015 and I have been trying and trying to solve my BSOD issue and I just don't know enough to do it on my own so I am asking for some help.

Anytime I restart/shutdown my PC about 95% of the time it will get hung up at the "Shutting Down.." screen and it sits there for about 10-15min then the BSOD pops up, does its thing and restarts my PC back to desktop.

I have followed the upload instructions and uploaded the .zip file that was created from the instruction page download. If needed I can upload the much larger (~600mb) MEMORY.dmp that was created as well from the BSOD.

Hey guys,

I am new to the forums here, and thanks for reading this thread and any possible solutions use may have to hopefully solve my problem. I recently as of two days ago upgraded my Desktops RAM and changed my Network Card through Techguys at PC world, Every thing was working fine the first day until Yesterday. I was playing world of warcraft and the game completely existed like a hard reset or (ALT F4) back to the desktop. This happend about five times over the coarse of two hours. So i decided to restart the computer and I noticed a error message pop up and before i could read it the computer had rebooted. So in the end i had to take a picture to see what the error was and this is what it read:

Dwm.exe - Application Error

The instructions at 0x022d3dd7 referenced memory at 0x022d3dd7. THe memory could not be written.

Click on Ok to terminate the program.

I read through a few forums regarding the Dwm.exe - Application Error problems and it said that it might be bad RAM and so to firstly to check the computers RAM with a memory diagnostics test which came back negative with problems or try a system restore, which is what i did and this error went away, and another error came up instead reading:

Hey Ciiaran,

Welcome to Vista Forums!!!! Great first post! We are here to help!
I noticed that you have SP2 installed. Is this correct? If so, i would suggest you uninstall SP2 and go back to SP1. I, personally, have found quite a few glitches with SP2 involving upgrades. Second, did you install your network card driver? If not, you should do this.
Also, any work you have saved that you may need, you should back up. Just play it safe incase anything happens.

I tried to update the service pack (pack 1), but that also fails with the error, driver power state failure. I have tried to look at and understand the dump file following a BSOD and it appears there might be a problem with ntoskrnl.exe. I attach the dump file in the hope someone out there can make more sense of it than me. Any suggestions on how to rectify my problem. Incidentally, i have only recently loaded windows 7. Every time I shut down or restart the computer I get a quick error message (so quick I can't read it) and the computer shuts down or restarts properly. I checked in the system error log and came up with this:

Application popup: dwwin.exe - DLL Initialization Failed : The application failed to initialize because the window
station is shutting down.

Also in the error log is this:

The Panasonic Digital Palmcorder service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I don't know if any of these have anything to do with this message I get but I thought I would give them to you anyway.

I am using Windows XP on a Sony Vaio RX560

I did contact Sony Tech support, but since the 90 days have passed, I would have to pay. I have also looked in the Microsoft Data Base but haven't found anything yet.

I recently updated my system with a 1TB raid 1 array. Everything worked fine for about 2 weeks, but I started getting a BSOD, error code 0x0000001e when I would try to shut down. At first it was intermittently, but it's become more and more prevalent. Now it happens every time the computer is shut down. After the BSOD, the computer will automatically reboot, leaving me no way to shut off the computer, save manually powering down the system.

I've done some basic research, and what I've found was that this issue is primarily related to system drivers not working properly. No new programs or application were added to the system since the hdd upgrade.

Hi guys,

I posted a couple weeks ago on here about an issue with my new laptop which luckily you were able to solve within a very short time, so I thought I would try again.
I no longer have any issues of BSOD during use of my laptop, but when I shut the lid for it to sleep, or sometimes during an attempted restart the BSOD occurs.

Attached are the files from the diagnostic tool!

On a non BSOD related note. My laptop has the intel(r) centrino(r) advanced-n 6235 wireless chipset in it which drops out and disables itself regularly. A potential fix I found on the internet was to roll back the drivers to a much earlier one, however the driver for this device was what caused the original BSODs which are now solved. Any guidance on this?

Thanks a lot,
PEter

Hi pbrownless .

I'm afraid I have some bad news :\ .
Your description in the second paragraph along with the most recent dump (and it's consistent
among the rest of them for that matter) leads me to believe that you might have a defected hardware.
The bug checks are all 0x9F which is DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE that happens in
transitions between power states most commonly S0 (ON state) > S3 (Sleep state)
or vice-verse. You can read more HERE.

The most common cause is a device driver but sometimes it's the hardware itself
that is at fault.
Just by looking at the unloaded modules, we see the problematic NETwsw00.sys and a hibernation
driver which are both inline with you original post, given that you had troubles in the past regarding
this driver/hardware and that it is recently misbehaving in general i would consider an RMA if that is an option.

Code:
Unloaded modules:

I have installed McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.5.0i with installed patches 7 on my PC (Windows Vista Home Premium SP2).
The virus scan is successfully installed on the machine and works fine (After installation I had to update windows defender as well because there was a warning from security centre coming).

The only problem is whenever I shutdown/restart/logoff my home PC it gives a message "explorer.exe Application error. The memory at..... could not be referenced...." and I have to press ok button to complete the operation.

It is cause of great annoyance. Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Fayyaz

I've been having trouble getting my computer to properly restart or shutdown. I'll try to separate pertinent information and please feel free to ask for more details.

The problem:
During shut down or restart the computer will have a BSOD. This always happens during the screen that says "Shutting Down," and will happen about 10-15 minutes after this screen first loads up. It doesn't make a difference when I try to restart either because the computer still goes through the shutdown process and it seems to be triggered by that.

Other observations:
Since this problem has started, I've been having a couple other issues.
1. My antivirus (Norton 360) would sometimes not load up after start up. I have to manually open the program in order to get the icon to load up in the Tray. I've since added the Norton 360 shortcut to the Startup Folder to insure that the program opens after startup.
2. I have a built-in finger print scanner that also stopped working as well. This was more of a gradual process where it would work occasionally, but after several more shutdowns, the scanner won't even allow me to unlock my computer with it.
3. Just to be super clear I haven't had a "proper" shutdown and restart since late October.

Note: In the file the BSOD dumps from October till now are relevant and essentially all the same.

The BSOD is blaming to your WiFi adapter, Intel Centrino I guess.

Go to Intel Download Center. Take the Intel Driver Update Utility and get any possible update for Intel WiFi.

Let us know the result. It will be needed for there are some other things which are most probably factory bloatwares contributing to the issue. So we should monitor the situation after updating the wifi driver.

Also upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

Hey people!
I've got an otherwise great dual SATA drive caddy, USB 3, made by ThermalTake, labeled SuperSpeed. It works just fine to let me use a single USB 3.0 cable to attach 1 or 2 drives to my system. My problem is that when I restart or shut down, the system comes back after the restart/reboot to inform me that "a problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly." Here's the Reliability Monitor info:

I can avoid this problem simply by using the "Safely eject" utility to disconnect those USB drives before restart or shut down. Is that my only option? Is there some kind of shutdown script I could write that would automate that process? My problem is I don't always remember to clean up those drives before hitting restart (I hardly ever shut down).
Inquiring minds wish to know. TIA for your ideas and input.

Hi guys.
Recently I've started getting an error message when logging into Windows Vista Home Premium. (SP2 I believe)
It says something along the lines of:

'Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute. Please save all your work'

Windows continues to load it's normal bits and pieces, my virus scanner and a couple of other startup programs before restarting as if I had hit the hard reset button.
I've also noticed if I don't login, just leaving it at the account selection screen restarts the computer after a minute also.

It was originally doing this maybe once or twice a week, however it's now doing it every time I turn the computer on, making it unusable for anything I'd like to do.
Also originally, using the 'boot logging' option (the one that outputs driver loading to a text file, although I'm not sure where) would stop it doing anything at all, but it now just acts exactly the same.

The only thing I can recall 'going wrong' recently just before I started getting the error was a powercut when windows was installing updates. The windows sidebar (which I normally have disabled) has occasionally popped up a few gadgets, but not the bar itself, and come up with an exception error. However I have gone in and disabled the sidebar in safemode and also renamed the exe itself to stop it loading and the error persists.

I have also run windows update a few times since first getting the erro... Read more
