Lenovo System Update - Catalog update

Q: Lenovo System Update - Catalog update

What is happening with Lenovo System Update? We are getting an error that the package catalog is being updated? We have several models here and its happening on all of them. I can't find anything relating to this update on any Lenovo site, and the response I got from calling support was "Sorry." They were also not able to tell me when they think this will be fixed. EDIT: Spelling.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo System Update - Catalog update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Nigel, you need to use IE11. You need to turn off all filtering and install an add-on.

I'm running Vista Ultimate and IE7. I have been trying to access the Windows Update Catalog on http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/. It immediately takes me to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...e/Install.aspx and asks me to download an ActiveX control which I do. I then get an Internet Explorer Add-On Installer warning, to which I click on Install. However, thereafter nothing happens and the page remains static. I don't get any error messages, but the page does not navigate away from the Install page.

Any ideas regarding what the problem may be? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello guys and Gals.... Got one that is a real brain twister, at least it is for me...

Please bare with me, a little history is appropriate.

On Sept 12, 2009 deleted the Dell partitions and reconfiguring the internal drive with a data partition. Moved My Docs folder to new Data partition (E:\). Updated Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot S&D then ran scans with all three. Removed some adware cookies. Did a little more clean up and reconfiguring of stuff like Start/Programs menu and Bookmarks along with a few other minor things. Updated FF to v3.5.3. Installed AdBlocker Plus, Sourceforge Firefox Preloader and a couple of Windows Updates. Defragged both partitions, then created a new Full backup image with Acronis TI. Stored the image on my external USB HDD. Everything worked just great.

Then on Sept 20 (8 days later) I created an incremental image before trying out a utility called Sandboxie. Didn't work out, so I recovered to the incremental image.

My normal Windows Update routine goes like this. I have Windows Automatic Update turned OFF. I periodically check the Windows Update site to see if any new updates are out. If any new ones are released, I go to the Windows Catalog site, download the executable file, then install them, storing the executable files on my external HDD.

Now to the recently discovered problem and thank you for your patience.

Yesterday (Oct 8) I went to the Catalog site to download KB792260. All went normal until after I selected t... Read more

Trying to download KB3081444.  Only options offered are microsoft.com/downloads, which doesn't have it, and the Microsoft Update Catalog site.
I went there with Edge (I'm running Win 10) but it told me to use IE.  Once at the page, I keep getting told that "this web site wants to add the following add-on: "Microsoft Update Catalog" from "Microsoft Corporation."
(Are there quotes because IE doesn't believe it's really Microsoft?  Or is it just being sarcastic?  Hard to tell sometimes. :-) )
Anyway, I always click "Install," but nothing happens.  F12 offers no help.  Any idea how a fully updated, licensed copy of Windows 10 Enterprise running the latest version of Internet Explorer (with no fancy security settings cranked
up) can't load an ActiveX control from Microsoft Corporation while trying to download updates from Microsoft's Update Catalog?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Microsoft has changed the Update Catalog so that any browser may be used to download files not just IE.

A:Microsoft Update Catalog can be used with any broswer

They've added a www version of the Catalog site, though it can still be buggy when using a link directly to a specific KB#. I've also read that it can't currently be used by Edge.

I notice that some of the updates are for x86, some are for x64 and some are just Windows 7. If the architecture of the update is not specified then I am assuming that it is an update that should be applied for both architectures. Also my system happens to be x64 so I am not downloading any of the x86 updates. Would the x86 updates even apply to an x64 system or would that be problematic?

A:A question about the Microsoft Update Catalog x86, x64 and just 7?

Windows Update should only give you updates that you need.
Are the x86 updates for MS Office, and you have Office 32bit?
It might help if you post a screen print of the x86 updates you are not downloading/installing.

Lenovo Security Advisory: LEN-2015-011
Potential Impact: Execution of arbitrary code
Severity: Medium

Multiple vulnerabilities have been identified within Lenovo System Update (previously known as ThinkVantage System Update). Lenovo has released a new version of the Lenovo System Update software that addresses these vulnerabilities.

Lenovo System Update validates all system update files as they are downloaded from the Lenovo servers. However, if the local system contains malware, it is possible that the downloaded updates could be altered before installation creating a race condition. The latest Lenovo System Update release eliminates this possibility. Lenovo System Update uses a service called SUService.exe to run system updates. As part of the authentication and validation process the service only accepts commands if a valid security token is passed along with the command. Vulnerabilities were discovered on how the security tokens were generated allowing an attacker to run commands. The latest Lenovo System Update release fixes the token authentication flaws.
Other security issues were also addressed in this update.
Mitigation Strategy for Customers (what you should do to protect yourself):
Starting from April 1, 2015, run Lenovo System Update and install the latest version of the application, version 5.06.0034 or later. You can determine the currently installed version by opening Lenovo System Update, clicking on the green question mark in the ... Read more

I was trying to download the latest driver for Realtek HD Audio and saw that the link to do so was a sticky so it must be a popular thing to do. I tried to download the driver in the catalog -- not sure why there are two that are described identically but are different sizes -- and it appeared it was gonna work until I clicked on view basket in order to download the selected driver. There I encounter an error each time I try.

I have used the Microsoft software update catalog before to manually apply updates. I'm pretty sure that I've never had any problem with any of the feature/functionality -- at least I don't remember ever having any. For some reason, while I can browse/search it and select updates to download resulting in the number shown in the catalog being updated,, whenever I click on view basket I get the error shown at the bottom of this post.

I'm running Win 10/IE 11 and have tried setting the site to "compatible" as well as enabling cookies and pop-ups explicitly for this site. Nothing has had any effect -- each time sameO sameO.

I've seen tons of posts with this same problem and most of the responses just seem to be shots in the dark -- some with the suggestions to do the above.

Is anybody familiar with this issue and what I need to do to resolve it?

In fact, I don't care if I download fr4om some other site but I can't find any other sources, even Realtek, for this newest driver. If you know a downloadable sorce for this same driver then... Read more

A:download non-english updates from Windows Update Catalog

I'm afraid that it is inevitable and you have to tick "Select all" for each update if you want to download all language of Updates. Why do you want to integrate all language updates into an image? if you need additional language user
interface, then you just need language pack added to your image.

Is there any solution to constant system failure to a level where the blue screen turns up and laptop can't be even turned on, after every system update?

I've checked the drivers and everything, but since the big update pack somewhere in March every update ends up in system failure. And the restore points before the updates are useless, because system doesn't recognize them.

After the second time this has happened and I've lost all the files that has not been backed up on hard drive I really start to think is there something wrong to Lenovo and Windows 7 combination?

I almost start to regret that I have legal version with update option.

I am currently using a Lenovo ThinkPad T450s for about a year now and I have noticed something unusual with the System Update application. When I run the app, I stumble upon some updates that I choose to update - so far, there are a total of three updates (1 Critical Update and 2 Optional Updates). The Updates are for McAfee Firstboot Update, ThinkPad Video Features (NVIDIA N16S-GT) and Synaptics Ultranav Driver. I have installed the Critical Update numerous times, but that item is there every time I boot up the app again (with note that I nowadays use Windows Defender as my main Security app as opposed to McAfee which has already expired) together with the other two Optional Updates (the Video Features update I deferred its installation for the first time and when I ran installation, it caused my computer to reboot with the stop code critical structure corruption - since then I left it alone, but I sometimes experience the computer briefly crashing before it starts operating fine again; whereas with the Ultranav Driver I run it through, but after sometime my system tells me that the installation can't proceed on due to failure in closing some apps and/or overwrite some older files - ever since I got a different version of the same Driver, though that Driver remains as an Optional Update). What I'm saying is that all three Updates always pop up after running for new Updates in the System Update app - even after rebooting my system. I know this is a lot to ... Hello I have a Lenovo Ideapad 310-14ISK. When using Windows 10, I always check if there are updates both with Windows Update and Lenovo System Update. One thing I noticed is that, commonly, software installed using Lenovo System Update cause errors on the computer. The first time a error occurred, the Bluetooth became extremely slow. On the second time, the application System Update was updated, and the interface became problematic, now when maximized, parts of the window are hidden. On another update, wireless stopped working. On another, video drivers were unable to use DirectX 11+. Yesterday, there was another update and the Intel Rapid Storage no longer works and the Lenovo Settings conservation mode option is not always working (BIOS was updated). This is the interface of Lenovo System Update. This is not from yesterday, this is from the day the interface became broken. Note the enoumous space on right, the space on top and how part of the window is below the bar and below the screen too. When the problems were with drivers, Windows Update reverted the problematic updates, but when they are with applications, Windows Update can't revert.  Is the Lenovo System Update a legitimate application? If yes, why is it causing so many problems? Thank you.

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

A:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

Hi. I don't know what has happened but my pc is running strangely recently. For example, I can't install the visual c redistributable (vcredist.exe), or directx 9.0c, and some games don't work which did a while ago - now they crash to the desktop. I haven't got a restore which fixes the problem. It is all a bit strange.
I've got windows 7 64 bit on a Dell vostro - i7 860, 4g ram etc.
I've tried microsoft security essentials, all manner of spyware removers including spyware search & destroy to no avail.
What should be the next step in investigating this?
Thanks for any help!

A:can't install visual c redistributable, or directx 9.0c, can't update - security update for visual c++, system update...

Microsoft Windows 7 already has DirectX 11, so installing version 9 will always fail and is useless. It also has VC++ redistributable 2005 and 2008. The latest version which is not included on Windows 7 is VC++ 2010 redistributables which you should install (but very few games are designed in VC++ 2010 today). When games fail, they create a crash report or log. You should go through them and try to find the possible cause. What message do games show when crashing?Check Event Viewer to find the possible cause of crashing of a game.

I've tried many times to install the latest critical BIOS update, using Lenovo System Update, and every time it attempts to, it fails after telling me in a popup that I need to turn the system off and make sure I have a fully charged battery. I can't believe I would need to buy a new battery in order to install it, because the battery works just fine. I googled the issue and found that this could mean my system reserved partition is full and indeed that is what I found. My C: drive is a 500 GB SSD but the system partition is only 100 MB of which only 3 MB is free.

MS web page has a long convoluted command line "fix" for this (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086249) but I was wondering why I couldn't just "shrink" the main C: drive partition and then "extend" the system partition using diskmgmt.msc.

Or is there a better way?

A:latest update failed - can't update system reserved partition

Hello Ray Lo,

Yes, potentially you can do this... But I would suggest backup of your SSD, before you try to do anything as such... WRT shrinking and moving partitions! Just in case!

One extra step enforcing security does no hurt, does it?

On 9/3/11 the Microsoft update site provided a 150+ MB update for the video system. After the update downloaded and began to install, the video system crashed (the screen went blank) and did not recover after more than an hour.

I then performed a system image restore from a backup external hard drive. I tried again to install the update and again the video system crashed.

Anyone else experience similar problems with this update?

A:Update From Microsoft Update Site Crashes Video System

LMC, welcome to the Seven Forums.

What happened is your laptop has switchable graphics and will only work properly with the driver from the laptop manufacturer, in your case HP (or any other laptop with switchable graphics). Problem is that WU is essential stupid in that it doesn't know that and only sees one or the other of the video cards in the laptop, and as a result offers and installs one that won't work with it.

In this case stop trying to install it as it will never work. Just hide the update in WU so you don't see it and only ever install a video card driver update from HP.

Do I have to unregister the control manually using Regsvr32 /u?
If I did that, would it remove the reference to the control in All add-ons?
And would I then be able to delete the DLL?
