No backlight / dim screen

Q: No backlight / dim screen

Hello! I manage several hundred chromebooks and repair them as needed, and I've got one that I've seen twice now and not found a good solution for. My issue is that we have a Chromebook 11 G3 that has a dark screen, very faintly you can see what should be displayed. Not a case of the brightness being turned down, but rather the LED backlighting on the screen appears not to be working. I've now tried replacing, screen, motherboard and display cable in an attempt to fix this issue. The screens were brand new, as were the replacement screen cables, though the mother boards were second hand. HDMI is still functional in all cases. I have called HP support and not gotten any information other than "replace the motherboard". As I have now seen this twice in the past month and all of those devices were purchased at the same time I have concerns that this may be more frequent. I guess my question would be if there is a schematic for testing the boards or information on fuses that might have blown and could be jumpered or replaced. I would also love to know if anyone else is running into this issue. I would also be thankful for any resources on testing procedures for components like the screen and output on the eDP connector. I have a little background in electronics and don't mind testing and/or soldering. Also, I have already tried powerwashing/resetting the device to no avail, stating that as I know almost all of the support responses get that procedure pasted in as a fix. It is not for this issue.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My sister dropped her T410 and cracked the LCD screen, which clearly was not covered under the basic warranty.  The $950 quote for repair was a little steep (basically the cost of the laptop) so we decided to try a repair ourselves.  I replaced the LCD screen with a model suggested by the Lenovo rep.  With the new screen in place, the backlight doesn't function at all (can see information on the screen with a flashlight but otherwise nothing).  I also put the old screen back in (which previously was backlit despite being cracked) and observed the same problem.  I made sure the LCD cable was seated firmly at both ends. Considering things as they stand now, my question is about the best route to take from here.  As I understand it, since the LED backlight is powered by the system board, we either buy a new system board or use this laptop as a "desktop" attached to a standalone monitor.  Replacing the LED sub card seems questionable for this particular problem (saw another post here with that conclusion).  We could replace the LCD cable, but it seems to me more likely that the fuse on the motherboard is blown.  If it comes down to motherboard vs. desktop use, we'll probably avoid the motherboard replacement since it is somewhat expensive. Am I missing any obvious ideas?  Should I consider replacing the LCD cable more seriously?  Is the LED sub card more relevant to the LCD/backlight than I think?  I'm hoping t... I have owned 3 of these computers. All purchased from best buy. Every single one has had this problem and i returned the last 2. This isn't a small problem either, I've found multiple cases of this online. It seems to happen to the bestbuy laptops the most. I tried contacting hp support on the computer but they were no help and when they called me I couldn't understand a word of what he was saying. Great laptop, horrible screen.  Has anyone found a fix for this or has hp recalled these laptops? I have all of my school work on my laptop so I cant really just let it go.  Thank you

I have an HP Pavilon ze5570us laptop which when AC power is removed dims the backlight on the screen. This is normal I know but I need to keep the backlight intensity at high because it is necessary for my eyesight. I cannot figure out how to change the intensity. I have tried the power settings but this does not seem to make any difference. Does anyone know what I can do?

Hello, The title describes my problem. External screens work, as does every other part of the laptop. I had a hinge failure after which the cable connecting the screen broke. I patched it together with aluminium foil and ordered a new one. It worked for a while  with the old one but one day the laptop just spontaneously shut down, after which the backlight never went on again. Replacing the cable hasn't fixed this. I've tried Fn-F2/F3 and reconnecting the power supply and RAM. Is there a way to diagnose whether my screen, the motherboard, or a software error is causing this? I'd like to be sure before ordering a replacement screen. I read something about a lid closing switch not working properly as well, how would I check that? Thanks in advance

I recently replaced my screen on my dv6-6c35dx notebook and am getting no backlight when I start up my laptop. When I first installed the new screen it worked fine, but my computer powered off and wouldn't start up again for several minutes. When it started up again, there was no backlight.I have tried both the new and original screen and have had the same problem with both. I have replaced the cable running from the screen to the circuit board with no improvement.I am getting a faint image sans lighting, so I know the computer itself work, and the computer works when plugged into an external monitor.I'm at a loss here and could use any advice anyone can give.

First it was cracks on the lid, then there was a stuck battery latch, then it stopped booting, and now there is no screen backlight. Oh Lenovo, what have you been doing to the beloved Thinkpad brand? :-( It works with an external display, but that is not really the point of a laptop computer. I have seen this thread ("T420 no backlight bad fuse?") here and this thread ("T420s with broken backlight - replace the whole panel?") in thinkpad.com forums and I am somewhat confused as on how to proceed from here.  I would like to avoid an expensive repair if this is something I could fix myself.  I am not entirely sure it is a blown fuse issue, because the no backlight problem occured a few times (it would not work sometimes on boot, sometimes it would) before it the backlight stopped working entirely.  It possibly is a loose contact somewhere.  Hopefully.  I suppose the hardware manual could help, but I am not sure what is it that I should look for. Would you folks have any advice for me?

Hi, my problem:all of a sudden, the screen backlight on my Thinkpad T500 broke (15,4" CCFL) after I had taken the laptop out of my dock coupled to an external monitor in order to use it in battery mode. An external screen works as fine as beforehand, i can even see the BIOS or the Windows 7 Login on the Thinkpad screen if I point a flashlight on it. The Thinkpad monitor shows up in Windows settings and can be identified in Windows 7 with full solution. All status LEDs (WIFI, Bluetooth, /1\, /A\, memory, ...) are working as well. I never had direct problems with that beforehand (like a screen turning to red I read elsewhere on this forum). The only exception is that my screen, some months ago, completely turned out one or two times when I flipped the laptop shut to ~70 degrees. When I flipped it quickly it was more or less a flickering that could be fixed by bringing it into the normal 90 degree position. But this strange behaviour didn't come back during the last days or weeks. Unsuccesful solution approaches:- I updated the Intel Graphics Driver to the latest version in Win7 (no extra graphics card on this machine)- I booted Ubuntu Linux to exclude Win7 driver issues- I built in a new CCFL converter- I changed the LCD screen (took the LCD of my broken T61 whose screen was still working) What else can I do? I need my laptop working on a conference on Monday so I can invest the whole weekend in fixes, if required. I have some experiences with Hardware chang... Read more

just got my P72 with a UHD screen and it has backlight bleed on the bottom.I attached photos to show.. It's on the right side just off the corner and on the left side that has a hard edge of light bleed and its pretty wide. ( it also changes depending on viewing angle ) Whould like to know what the vets think as this is my first lenovo. After paying what i did, i would expect no bleeding at all. Not really wanting to send it back just to get another one with the same problem or have someone come rip the screen apart to install another one that might have the same problems. what you do guys think?Any help is appreciated!

A:My P72 UHD Screen Has Backlight Bleed

Yours is far better. Mine had more bleeding than this. Area to watch for is bottom left. Reported to Premier support. Waited three weeks, LCD was back-ordered, two times panels replaced, bleeding issued persisted. Now they are sending me new replacement. No point in calling for this, as my problem got worse. The replaced LCD part had stuck pixels. If the bleeding is affecting you and if you are within the return window return the laptop for refund/replacement. I am past 30 day return window, good thing about Premier Support is they escalated and they are sending me a new replacement unit.

Here's the problem I'm having with my laptop. I turn it on and you see it initially come on with all the text: i.e. Dell logo, drives connected, ram, etc. It then goes blank. I thought something was wrong with the motherboard, but if you wait a bit you can hear Windows start up. If you look closely at the screen you can still see everything: desktop, shortcuts, taskbar, everything. It is almost as if there is no backlight.

Like every laptop there is a small button of some sort near the hinge of the screen that when pressed turns the screen off for when you close the lid. If I push this down for a second and then release, the screen shows up again like normal, but then it will immediately turn back off (backlight off ,but can still see everything if looking closely).

I can plug up a secondary monitor and this works fine. When I plug up the monitor I have to hit the 'Fn' key and the 'crt/lcd' button to get it to link. Curiously, the laptop screen flickers on for a second, but then goes black again.

Anyone with an idea of what is going on? Is it just the switch near the hinge that is the problem? I was thinking maybe it was the switch or spring in the switch getting old and always being in the state of pressed down. Pushing the button and releasing only temporarily springs it up for the screen to come on, but drops back down. I was thinking if it were just this switch, maybe I could just remove it and then screen would work again.

Yesterday, I was using my Dell Inspiron 1200, when all of a sudden, the laptop went out. I later found out that the problem lied in the backlight. I concluded it was the backlight because the laptop would work when it was connected to an external monitor. In addition to that, updating and resetting the BIOS wouldn't solve the problem.

The question is...can I buy a new backlight or must I replace the entire screen? You have to remember that replacing the screen can cost a lot, and its difficult to find a screen for my exact needs (Dell Inspiron 1200 15") for a low price.

I really don't want to buy another laptop a few months after buying this one. Unfortunately, my parts warranty ran out almost exactly 30 days before this problem occured.

Hi all, I've been searching the forums about this topic, but I haven't found anything specific for my case: Symptoms: After turning on the laptop, the screen works fine for a few seconds and then it goes dark. The LCD display is working correclty, but with no backlight (still can see the screen if I use an external light source like a flashlight. All indicator lights (wifi, power, battery) work correctly.Image is displayed correctly if connected to external monitor.Problem happens in windows and BIOS (rules out driver issue).Realized that if I turn down the brightness all the way down and then press fn + F7 or if I close and open the lid, the screen would light up back again. If I turn the birghtness up, the screen goes dark again, but if I repeat step 4 it still works. After a few minutes of operating at minimun brightness, I can turn it all the way up and it won't go dark.Yesterday the backlight finally went out for good and not working at all.I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the inverter, mobo fuse or cable. Maybe someone here has seen these specific symptoms before and could lend me some knowledge and save me some time in debugging this issue. Thanks

A:T400 no screen backlight

Assuming you have a CCFL screen (with an inverter), the inverter is most likely.  Some T400 have CCFL, some have LED.  With LED panel, it is probably bad panel.

I bought the Legion Y530 on July 2018, yesterday during normal use, no gaming, windows asked me to restart due to automatic updates, I selected wait then about 10 min after that all of sudden the screen turned off and the computer restarted but the screen did not come back, not even the Lenovo logo is being displayed. I was able to connect an external monitor and log in on windows, then tried to remove the installed windows update and the laptop screen came alive again but the computer restarted and the screen died again. This is really bad for $1000 laptop. Actually I can see something on the screen, it is like it is with 3% of light. Very very dark images. To get even more worse, I bought the laptop in USA but I am from Brazil, where there is no Lenovo international support. This might be a sistematic issue of this model. Hi makhloofy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The way it shows fine on the external isolates the issue with the LCD panel itself.

Possibility of hardware failure is apparent specially if display goes on /off when changing the angle of the lid as if the cable connection is being changed or the LCD backlight is not ok and also having the same issue in the BIOS.

Best to call in technical support for possible service (inwarranty repair) else reseating LCD connection may help.

Hope this help answer your query.

Hi, my laptop screen backlight goes off, when I rest my hand on the left side of the touchpad. The darkening of the screen can be also reproduced when a small pressure is applied on the case just above the ethernet port or above the headphones port. When the screen goes dark, I can see that everything is running normal, if I shine on it with a lamp or strong light. The resulting effect seems to be the same as if I would have lowered the brightness to minimum. When I don't press the area described above, the screen is just fine. I am sure this problem is not software or OS related. I googled it a lot and my guess is lose connection on the inverter? One last thing - idk if related - sometimes, when I boot up the laptop, the backlight is turned off and I have to adjust it by pressing F3. Thanks for suggestions.Vaclav

A:HP Pavilion g6 screen backlight flickers

Nevermind,I found the solution myself. The laptop was not properly isolated between the top part of case (where keyboard and touchpad are) and the motherboard part of the case - especially above the VGA port and the ethernet port. This caused a conductivity problem and probably also the brightness issue when pressing the case down on its left side. I solved it by placing small pieces of isolation tape under the keyboard and above the two ports.

I have an Acer Aspire V 14 Touch. Recently, every time I restart my computer, the screen backlight flashes for a random amount of time, from a few seconds to a few minutes. This is before the initial bios screen and I can't get any response out of the computer while this is happening. It seems like the computer is attempting to boot and failing until it finally starts up. The same issue happens when starting up after hibernating, but not after sleeping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Screen backlight flashing before boot

Sounds like the system is waiting for something to happen, and it finally gives up after some benchmark point is reached.
I'd update your BIOS/UEFI and see if that helps.

Another thing to try is to remove the battery and AC Adapter.
Then hold down the power button for 30 seconds
Then put the battery and power cord back in and see if that has helped clear things out.

Good luck!

Since I got my laptop there has been a problem with screen backlight bleed in the bottom left-hand corner of the display. It is clearly noticeable when in a dark environment, showing dark content on the screen or when the screen brightness is turned up high, however, it is not that noticeable in normal use. Lenovo has offered a repair but I am interested in hearing whether people think this is worth it. I am worried that after the inconevience of backing up all my data and sending my laptop away, the repair will not make much difference to the issue, as it affects nearly all laptops so some degree. Does anyone have any experience with getting this kind of issue repaired and if so was it worth it?

Hi Lenovo community, I have a Yoga 2 Pro. When I open the lid and press the power button, it boots, but the screen's backlight stays off. I know it is actually booting, because the fans turn on, I can faintly see the "Lenovo" logo briefly appear when I hold the screen up to the light, and I can hear Ubuntu's drum sound that indicates it's ready for login.  Sometimes the backlight will come on if I wait a while. Yesterday it worked after I flipped the screen into tablet mode and then powered it on. Today I have had no luck at all. When it did come on, it continued working for as long as I was using it.  I suspect that the problem is the lid open sensor, but I'm not sure where this sensor is or how to get to it. Does anyone know?

My laptop screen had cracked, so I ordered a replacement. It was the same model number as the screen I got before. This worked for quite some time until the screen started flickering unless I had it at a certain angle or pressed right where the LCD cable connected to the screen. Tired of this, I took the screen apart again and stuck some electrical tape where the LCD cable connected. This worked, I was able to bend the screen without flickering. But then I took it apart one last time to make sure there was enough tape on it. When I turned it on the second time, the screen was dim and has been ever since. I need to shine a flashlight on it in order to see the screen.  Did I manage to damage the LCD cable itself in this case? Sometimes the screen flickers on and off, but the pressing on the spot where the cable connects "solution" doesn't work anymore. Any suggestions on what to do, aside from get a portable monitor (This is a very good machine and I don't feel like spending the money on a new laptop)

Then I connect a monitor, and that turns the backlight on. Then I can disconnect monitor, and use laptop normally until I turn it off. Once it (backlight) came on by itself, once it came on after coming out of standby, and once it came on as if nothing was wrong straight away. Any ideas? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. This laptop has been an absolute legend, i've had it for a few years and I'm extremely impressed with its resistance. It has been dropped while on from table height at least 3 times without any damage. It has survived a burst pipe leaking onto the keyboard for hours and then being turned on while wet - producing a nice electric burn smell. But I just dried it out and then it was good to go again. The touchpad left and right click buttons are long gone but that doesn't bother me too much. It's shabby but it works and I love it, it's like Jason Vorhees.

A:Screen backlight problem on Lenovo G50-80

Hi there, Polly             -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today

Yes! It seems difficult to adjust brightness through key, however, there is a solution for that.
For Leveno Laptop G50

Click control Panel , click hardware and sound, then click power option, and then adjust screen brightness on the bottom, then restart the computer, after then try to adjust brightness through key...It will work out try it.

Update us how it goes.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 When I turn the laptop on I can see a dim screen. but only if I shine a flashlight at the black screen. I was informed it could be my LCD inverter. I replaced the LCD inverter and the screen is still black. I can remote into the laptop from my desktop and see everything else is working fine. Does anyone have any ideal, what I can do to fix? Do I have to replace the LCD screen?
All advice is appreciated
Thank you

Hi,when I switch my X220 OFF, the screen remains lit as long as AC power is connected. (See the picture below)If I remove the AC power the screen goes dark.I should mention that it's not bright as it looks, I can only see it in the complete dark after several minutes of adaptation. To be sure it was an issue, I compared it in the dark with my X230 wich remain completely dark.Any Idea how to resolve this issue would be appreciated. Thanks  ?

I have a sony 15" lcd monitor thats like 4 years old. One day it would turn on and stay on for a second or two and then the backlight would shut off. You can still see the desktop in the display if you shine light on it but no backlight. I took the sucker apart and started testing for voltage on the inverter and its a real up and down reading and when i move the board around my backlight cuts off and on. My guess is the inverter but I figured i would post here before investing any money into this thing. Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Lcd screen backlight cuts off intermittently

It sounds like a bad connection on or near the inverter. It could be a bad wire or solder joint

Hi guys,Just got myself a brand new HP OMEN 15 with 6700k, GTX965M, 250GB SSD, 1TB HD, 16GB DDR4 and the bloddy bad Full HD Screen.I have some serious backlight bleed issues.Have you ever seen anything like this on the OMEN series? Is this "normal" with all 1080p omen laptops?Or would a RMA fix the issue?I would have gotten the UHD edition, if I had the chance....

Hey guys, joined this forum to see if anyone can help me out. I'm not too tech savvy so hopefully someone that know what they're talking about can help me. A couple of days ago I bought a new laptop after my old one died. I use this for school and personal use. I love the laptop. It's great. I bought it from Walmart so since it's new a couple of days old if I need to return it I can. But I just wanna see if this stuff is normal or not and if I'm being way to picky. I spent a lot of money on this and if something's wrong with it I wanna return it and exchange it while I can.So the problem I'm having is the screen. This is the first time I've owned an HD laptop screen and especially one that's this thin. It's an IPS screen and a touch screen. Well i had some time yesterday to sit down and mess with the laptop and changed my wallpaper and it's a black wallpaper well I noticed the top left and right corners of the the screen there is some fade to yellow or white at the corners. So would this be IPS glow or back light bleed? I tried to take a good picture it's a little more noticeable in person but this is close. Also another question. This is a pretty thin laptop, the thinnest laptop I've ever owned and I noticed when I close the screen down when I'm done when my hand touches the metal lid on the back of the laptop while closing it the screen ripples, is that normal? I know usually when you touch a screen it ripples but I'm touching the back of it so just wanna be sure that's nor... Read more

Merry Christmas Team.

My little brother came home from work one night and now is screen doesn't work at all. no flickering, backlight etc. I connected it top the TV via HDMI and even that didn't show up anything.

How high are the chances that his graphics card has died?

Cheers
Gameover.

A:Laptop Screen doesn't work, No Backlight

There aren't really graphics cards in laptops, they are built in to the motherboard. So, if it isn't displaying anything even when on the bios or start screen, it may be the motherboard that is bad.
