Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

Q: Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

Dear Forum,

Recently reactivated this notebook as a backup solution with an nex HD.

Which driver / programm is necessary to bring the hotkey to function?
The display itensity is very low and backwards I was able to control that with this key function.

Thanks a lot for support and hints

Preferred Solution: Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

For this old notebook models the whole thing works a little bit different as on new models. Now you have one package that contains all necessary stuff for FN functionality.
On old notebooks like your Satellite 5200 you must install several different tools to get this FN functionality, not brightness control only.

So, to make all this easier I recommend you to check Installation instructions for Satellite 5200 and install all missing stuff. Please follow the installation order.

If you still need help let us know.

Hi I was wondering if there was a way to bind a key to increase/decrease brightness of my laptop screen.

I can use the regular FN+Fnkey combo but I am using an external USB keyboard so it would be easier to use a non FN key combo.
I tried reading the scan codes of the FN+F6 key but I couldn't get any, so I can't remap it with a tool like AutoHotkey.

Also, since I have the slider thing in Control Panel > Power Options, this seems doable with a software.

Last note. I do not want a 'screen dimmer' program that does not actually dim the LEDs behind the screen.

Thanks for your input!

I shut down my laptops once every week; they're either in sleep mode or hybernating. My P50 is currenly running Windows 7 Pro with all the drivers installed. I have changed bios settings such that the function keys behave as function keys and only act as media keys (or whatever they're called) when pressed in combination with the Fn key. All hotkeys work as they are intended to.However, resuming from hybernation causes only the reduce brightness key (Fn + F5) to stop performing although all other hotkeys work as they should. Pressing the F5 key by itself works normally; its just the Fn + F5 combination that doesn't work.Anyone experiencing this ?

If anyone has any ideas to what could be wrong i would glady appreciate it. I have been at this for a few days now and no answers not even from the Toshiba site.

A:Brightness Control Hotkey No Working On Toshiba P105

I assume this is the "push the Fn button and another key" thingie? If so, check to ensure that the Fn key works by pressing it and one of the other functions to see if that works.

Then test the key that you use to adjust brightness - without using the Fn key. Does that key also perform it's designated function?

This'll let you determine if it's an error with the keyboard.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
I'm not an owner of your model, but with some Lenovo laptops Hot Key functionality is added by installing the Lenovo Utility application.  For your model there isn't a Windows 10 version of Lenovo Utility available, but you may wish to try installing the Windows 8.1 version.  If it doesn't install then try re-installing again using Windows Compatibility Mode.  Here is a link to the Windows 8.1 driver....

Greetings. This morning I installed Windows 7 fresh over the stock Ubuntu 14. I've managed to track and install most of the important drivers. However, the hotkey functions (adjust brightness, volume and the like) are still not working. I'm sure its due to lack of some sort of driver, but I can't figure out what needs to be installed to get them to work. I tried installing Lenovo Support Bridge, but it crashes directly on launching. Installing Lenovo Utlity hasn't been any help either; I'm getting zero indication that it's even there anywhere. I request any readers to lead me into the right direction, if possible. Thanks in advance. Regards.

Lenovo, it is much appreciated if you can provide an updated BIOS that allows the owner to enable/disable the hotkey function. The advantage is, that the owner can make a clean maiden Windows installation without 3rd party software, or use other operating systems such as Linux that lacks this feature of switching between the hotkey function and standard behavior for F1-F12 keys. Looking forward to this, as it gives me freedom of choice and it also is a key for buying Lenovo products future-wise. Thanks!

Toshiba Satellite T130- 16w, Windows 7

Several months ago i deleted some of the factory bloatware on my laptop because of slowdown. Though i checked everything was unnecessary before deleting it, i think i might've made a mistake. Since then i've only used mobile internet. Today I came to turn the wireless on the function+F8 key no longer does anything. The little wireless/bluetooth menu does not appear. Wireless is currently off and I can't get it on.

Wireless is turned on in the BIOS. In the device manager it appears as working and enabled. The computer is in every way set up to use it, I just can't get the key to do anything so i can't turn it on. Weirdly, I can turn bluetooth on and off separately, just not wireless.

I've updated the driver for the wireless but the hotkey driver isn't anywhere on the site. I've tried searching it elsewhere but couldn't find it for windows 7. Can I use the XP one, or one from a different Toshiba model? The T130 section just returns no results.

Does it sound like the hotkey is the issue? Does anyone know where I'd find the driver? Is there any way to turn the wireless on without using the function key (there's no switch)? Like through windows? I've been trying to sort it out for 4 hours and gotten nowhere.

Thanks for reading.

Win 7 requires the Toshiba VAP (value added package) installation to get the FN buttons working.
Visit the Toshiba EU driver page and there you can find the VAP for Win 7 64bit

If you need the VAP for Win 7 32bit, choose another notebook series and use the VAP released for another notebooks.
The VAP does not depend on notebook series.

Hi. Using a crappy Dell Inspiron B130 w/ Windows XP here. A while ago, a fun little accident left certain keys on my keyboard completely inoperable. I have the same problem: some of my function keys are not working.
My device is a HP zbook studio g3 with model number T7V83ES.
I did a clean install of 10 education since i could get that one for free and my previous version was enterprise. The keys worked on enterprise although I had some issues with it before only I forgot how to fix it. More people at my university that have the same laptop are experiencing the same problems, unfortunately this is not the case for everyone that owns the same laptop.
Here's what I did and what it resulted in:
-Installed every driver/program that seemed appropriate and was listed on the original  HP website for software and drivers for my device.
Result: My keys were not working at all. (brightness, project switch and mic mute keys)
-I asked google and tried every single solution I could find, including the ones you suggested.
Result: Mic mute key is working, project switch key is also working, and as if it was a miracle my brightness keys are also working! But: my brightness keys are stuttering like hell. It takes windows ages to register my keystroke and even longer to register another one directly following it; it can not register 2 keystrokes in a row, it needs a sort of cooling down time for the button.

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to make sure you have installed the graphics driver...if the graphics driver is not installed, then you can't adjust the brightness.  it is stuck on maximum. This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72501-73000/sp72652.exe

A:Brightness Function Keys( f2 and f3) NOT Working

Hi, Well that does explain why your f2/f3 keys aren't working as you only have the basic Microsoft driver installed - if the Intel driver was previously installed Ok, this may indicate a hardware issue. What happens if you try to install the Intel HD 5500 driver directly from Intel - it's the 2nd file in the list on the following link. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+5500+for+5th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors If this does install Ok, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I have an Acer Aspire 1810TZ running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. There are function key combos to adjust the screen brightness (Fn-right and left arrow). This function seems to stop working after I hibernate and un-hibernate the computer. Other function key combos, such as volume adjustment, still work fine. And adjusting the screen brightness via the power control panel still works. Restarting Windows restores the brightness adjustment key function until I hibernate and un-hibernate again.

An annoying glitch in an otherwise great machine.

I am pretty well versed with upgrades from Windows and HP. I purchased and registered this new HP Envy Notebook HP - m7-n109dx a month ago.  After either Windows or HP updates the Function keys for Dim, Brightness and Volume had stopped working.  After this began I rolled back and resinstalled video and keyboard drivers one at a time and rebooted the system.  Nothing is working. We need somone to give us a patch to download to fix this universal problem. I scoured this forum and many others but because this computer is a 2016 computer there are not many expert suggestions from HP or power users to resolve this problem. On the other hand, I see complaints in many forums about the problem, hence the description as being a universal problems. Is it a Windows Updates for W10 that is the culprit?  Is the newest BIOS update from HP that is the problem?  I do know my machine worked great for two weeks until updates from HP and Windows began pouring in. Could we please  have an expert reslove this without speculation?  I have done all that any expert would do to resove the problem. No, I am not going to reset the system either. Thank you in advance to whomever the hero will be with the right answer.

I purchased Dell Inspiron 5558 (with Windows 10) just two months ago (Nov 2015). Everything was working fine. However, recently I started to notice an annoying thing with the function keys F11 and F12 for reducing and increasing the brightness respectively.

Without using the Fn key (next to Windows key), if I hit F11 it was reducing the brightness and F12 was increasing the brightness earlier - as expected. Now, sometimes, the laptop monitor goes to sleep mode the moment I hit F11 or F12. I have to press the power button again to wake it up. This behavior is very off and on and not consistent.

Did any settings get changed? How to fix this? Please help.

FYI - I have not changed the BIOS settings from default which could be multimedia. I can say this because other multimedia keys in the same row behave normally (even when this strange behavior is noticed in F11 and F12).

A:Function keys for Brightness control (F11, F12) do not work as expected

Hello Shashi,
The settings for those FN keys are handled by the Dell Quickset Utility, and later the Dell Command Configuration application, so any changes you would want to make would be done in that application.
I would suggest going into that application and seeing if you can change the settings.   Putting a system to sleep is one of the functions available so perhaps the configuration has changed.   If you want additional help please click on my Dell Todd username and send me a private message with the Dell Service Tag of the system and I'll see if I can help.   Please keep all discussions and troubleshooting here in this thread so that others, with the same questions or problems, can see what is done to resolve.

I have looked long and hard at other peoples' solutions to this problem to no success. I have tried:-installing latest Intel HD 5500 driver from Lenovo site.-installing latest beta driver from Intel-enabllng the Generic PnP Display-Several registry hacks that claimed to work (I reverted back after they failed to do anything) My question is, when will the display driver support brightness settings again, or is there an older version that works that I can download? I am pretty happy with my laptop, the only thing that bothers me is a screen brightness. I tried to increase it with preinstalled flash cards, with NVidia manager (quite desperate tool) and it was not enough. Now I am thinking if it is possible to replace screen LED with more powerful lamp?

Just if you know any solutions, I will be happy to know them. Thank you.

A:Satellite X200 - not happy with the brightness

My friend has an X200 and I find that the brightness is decent, its actually brighter than my Tecra.

The thing is with laptops, they rarely match the brightness of external monitors due to power limitations, so if you need a super bright screen, one option would be to use an External Monitor. 22" monitors are quite cheap these days :)

Otherwise, you'll just need to do the following to achieve maximum brightness:

1) Use AC power
2) Turn up the screen brightness to 100%
3) Use the nVidia Control Panel to modify the contrast
4) Increase the brightness in games (if thats what its used for)
5) Decrease the daylight/lighting in your room

Unfortunately the LCD's have a custom connection, so it would be difficult to replace the screen with a brighter LCD.

Hello everyone! I own a Toshiba Satellite S955-S5373 with Windows 8.1 installed. For a long while now, I have been unable to adjust the brightness on the laptop, it's stuck at maximum.
Summary of the issue:
Display brightness is stuck at maximum.
All the function keys work, except for those that control the brightness.
The slider that is supposed to pop up when the brightness controls are hit does not appear.
Changing the brightness using Power settings/other manual options does not work as well.
What I've tried so far:
Installed the latest Display driver that Toshiba offers for my model.
Attempted to install the latest Toshiba Eco Utility Driver.
Note: I have a hunch the issue is linked to the Eco utility. The Eco utility can't be opened, repaired, or uninstalled (at least not via the Toshiba update I downloaded above). When the computer tries to engage the Eco Utility, a pop up appears saying something about how the "ordinal 8 cannot be located" in reference to "teco.exe". When I try to run the Toshiba Eco Utility update from Toshiba, selecting either the "Repair" or "Uninstall" options, the installer is unable to complete the operation as well.

Rolling back to a previously used Display Adapter driver.
At this point, I'm pretty lost as to what can be done, short of a factory reset, which I don't particularly want to do. Any ideas folks? Thanks in advance!

Hello, and Welcome,
See if reinstalling the function key driver solves the issue. Select your OS in the left pane.

I wrote this some time ago, but to the US forum of Toshiba, and they forwarded me to the European forum because my model is from Europe. I am now going to copy paste the entire message here.

Operating System: Windows 8

For a few days now I have an issue with the brightness of my screen.

It will recalibrate itself all the time. Basically, whenever I watch a movie it turns the brightness to an extreme, and if I switch to something else (put behind the window of the movie and bring forth my browser), for a few seconds, everything on the browser is super bright, and slowly goes down. Then as soon as I turn back to the movie, the brightness goes back up again.
If I try to recalibrate it myself from SETTINGS > CHANGE PC SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > CALIBRATE DISPLAY COLOUR, I have two options.
- Either I'll be able to watch movies normally but everything else I do on the computer will burn my eyes from how insanely bright they are.
- I will not burn my eyes, but the movies will be so dark they'll be unwatchable.

From as much research I did I found out that it might be because of BitDefender (my anti-virus), which had a default option checked as of a new update, which permitted the program to "b... Read more

When we use the screen combination Fn-F4, we've got the small 'widget' on the screen that goes up/down for the brightness. But the screen brightness itself doesn't change.

Any idea what can be wrong?
ps windows 10 is been used as OS.

Download and install Toshiba Service Station, and install all the utilities found in there. You may need to uninstall the existing ones first in Control Panel.
