Q: configuring 3 redundant routes with failover

I need to configure my router for three routes ( two separate fiber links and a radio link) with one of the fiber links being the primary link, the other fiber a secondary route and the radio a backup route for the fibers.

I am looking for a best fail-over configuration that will allow traffic to flow primarily on fiber link A and failover to fiber link B incase of failure in link A and incase of failures of both fiber links, the traffic to flow on the Radio Link. The configuration should allow for reverse once the fibers are restored.

I will be routing via eBGP to the provider end and OSPF on my internal network.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this post. Here is my situation:

Physical server configured with one NIC card. IP address is: 192.168.1.136

Physical server is acting as the domain controller and running DNS services.

Physical server is running Windows Server 2012 and utilizing the Hyper-V Feature.

Hyper-V virtual switch has two virtual switches created. They're as follows:

10.10.10.2
10.10.20.2

I have numerous virtual machines working off of these two virtual switches without issue.

The physical server has Routing and Remote Access configured and working for NAT traffic for these virtual switches. All virtual guests are able to access the internet without a problem.

The problem comes in when I try to use my workstation PC. This is also a physical computer configured with one NIC as follows:

IP: 192.168.1.116
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (This is the IP of the Linksys Router)

I'm trying to use this workstation PC to access my virtual guests running on 192.168.1.136. I understand that when I try to connect to something like 10.10.10.4, the Linksys router has no idea where this is. Therefore, I've configured a static route. Unfortunately, the static route is not working as I expected. Here is how I have the static route setup:

Destination LAN IP: 10.10.10.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.136

A:Configuring Static Routes

You appear to be doing NAT on the server. This is most likely the cause. I would edit your Routing and remote access policies so that there is a "public" (192.168.1.0/24 IP address) associated with each VM. This way when you send traffic to those devices the server will translate the destination IP (One you created) to the virtual machine associated.

Since these are on the same LAN segment you would need to set up static routes that force the traffic to the server as the gateway (like the static routes you have done). If you don't then the workstation client will attempt to broadcast for the VM's MAC address or send the traffic to the linksys router. If memory serves me correct when I last did this you may need to set up a static route on the virtual machine however if there are default routes configured correctly (Default gateway) then these should work fine.

Since you are using ICMP it uses it's own transport layer protocol therefore using PAT (Port address translation) is not a viable option.
If you open up Routing and Remote Access console on the local Windows server machine and go to your NAT settings.

From there right click your "public" interface or the physical NIC that connects to the 192.168.1.0/24 network and then click on properties. This should bring up a similar properties window as the one below.

From here, click on the address pool tab to show the pool of addresses that NAT can use.

I am trying to setup the Failover where it plays a video file (mpeg2 with transport stream) upon failure. If I set this file to play as a file, it works fine, but then stops when finished. What I would like to do is have this file loop continuously until the network is re-connected. I have tried to set up a playlist, but it does not work. My playlist was created using notepad and is entitled ASIC .txt

Backup Channel ….. Playlist
URL box is ………. file:///mnt/usb/sda1/mediafile/React (have also entered React.txt)

My txt file is attached, but is ….

Any help would be gratefully received. Alternatively, is there a way to get the single file (that works) to continuously loop?
 

A:Failover from USB

There may be a way to script something to work like you want, but the script would be a lot more complicated than simply "play x". It will also need to check to see if the alarm has cleared and then stop playback. But it will largely depend on what exactly you are doing (or trying to do) as you haven't provided near enough details for anyone to help.

Many business class router/firewalls have feature called SLA where you can program a secondary Internet circuit as a backup to the primary. The router/firewall will do a continuous health check on the primary circuit to a designated site you choose on the Internet. If there is anything that drops under the threshold you set, the router/firewall will roll over the Internet connections over to the secondary circuit.

I'm not sure if the SMB router/firewalls which advertise themselves as dual WAN ports can operate in this manner. I do know their basic operation is to do a round robin or if link status for the primary fails will roll over to the secondary WAN port.

Hi,
We have an SMTP server on our network which we use for scan-to-email from photocopiers, UPS notifications etc.. I'd like to setup a second one in a different office which can take over the load incase the first goes down.

I've done a bit of reading, but haven't been able to find anything solid on how to set it up.. I was thinking something in DNS.. but from what I understand MX records are for incoming mail from other mail servers..

I am new to all of this, I have been thrust into a situation where I need to figure this out.

We have a 2800 connected to a microwave transceiver (our main uber fast connection) and a T1 via ADC Kentrox Data Smart Max T1 (our backup connection)

This is what I walked in to.

What we/I would like to do:
-continue using the MW as our main connection
-use the T1 as an automatic failover if the MW fails due to weather or other event.
-if possible, I would like to take the T1 directly to the Cisco 2800 bypassing other external equipment.

I believe we intend to drop our current provider.

Additional complication:
We are hosting our own website and customer services via the web via this connection, if failover occurs how can we assure that traffic still finds its way to us?

With all of that said, what do we need to do?

I know this is a huge issue and I hope I can look to this forum for guidance on these issues.

I have a 2801 chassis and I have a 2 port e1/t1 wic. So you would just need to purchase the a new card.

Next you need to re do your config.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum. However, I really need help on my Vista OS on an HP desktop PC. I am getting the following reports:
1. "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically".

2. "Problem signature - 01 Auto Failover"

I have read some of the responses to this problem and have 2 problems. First, I am a novice when it come to this sort of thing, and next, my PC did NOT come with a disc.

Question: Obviously, Vista is Trash ie, most of the responses, and so is 7. However, since 7 seems to be the only option to upgrade to, how do I do that after purchasing a 7 upgrade disk, if I can even do it???

By the way, a common problem I find in your threads is the downloading of photos, which is the last thing I did before my PC crashed.

Also, will I lose "My Documents" if I can an upgrade???

If ANYONE would be so kind as to offer me some advice (in NOVICE Terms Please , I would greatly appreciate it.

Create a Recovery Disc
you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options
Create Recovery DVD

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.
System Recovery Options

If Vista will not start now, boot the Recovery CD to run Startup Repair which automates System Restore as well as numerous other tests including System File Checker which can repair system files which are not corrupted beyond repair.

If Vista still will not start, try booting into Safe Mode to run sfc /scannow to repair System files.

I am looking to design an active/standby failover but am wondering if to get clients to access the VPN you would need to have more than 2 usable IPs from an ISP? For example. the ISP inside interface will have public ip 1, the primary asa will have public ip 2, and the secondary ip will have public ip 3.

i have 2 network connections but my internet connection always defaults to "Local Area Connection". if my cable modem disconnects for some reason, i have to pull the ethernet cable from my windows 7 before it starts using the Wireless Network Connection

Hi,

We have a fairly unstable Internet connection through Dodo (Please no quips about peanuts and monkeys, I know Dodo is a terrible ISP). They, and Telstra have refused to fix the problems, preferring instead to blame my equipment, despite the fact that I have replaced every part of the network many times over. Line noise on the connection is terrible, and causes anything up to 30+ disconnections a day, from anywhere between 10 seconds to 90 minutes.

As my sons play a lot of online gaming, disconnections not only kill the game, but also get them demoted on the servers.

So, they have a 3G mobile phone with 1.5GB data allowance per month.

But we are having problems finding any software (preferably FREE), that will let us set up a fail over environment such that when the PPPoE connection fails it switches to 3G, and automatically reverts to PPPoE when that service comes back online.

Any one know of any software that meets this need?

I am looking for a script that will dynamically update Windows 2003 DNS (AD) to the second server when the first server fails. The servers are appliance servers (not windows).

Does anyone have a script to do this?

Example of script function:
1. ping first server every 10 seconds
2. if no ping reply for 60 seconds DDNS the search.x.com DNS A and PTR record to the second box.
3. if the first server becomes available again for 120 seconds then DDNS the search.x.com DNS A and PTR record to the first box again.

I link my Windows home PCs (7 and some XP) to a separate file server box via a persistent network mapping. There's a separate mirroring server in place on the network too.

If one server goes down, theres an undignified scramble to remap drives so that work can recommence - but is there a quick way to have Windows 7 pick up the job of determining primary and secondary availability to speed this?

I know I could probably do something involved and complex via a virtual server and clustering but I'd prefer something simple and client-side if possible !

I thought the basis of this type of RAID setup is to redirect traffic from a primary to a secondary without interruptions. I didn't think you would need to do anything if the setup is correct.

Hi everyone!

Just a little one really... I've got a 3 month old from DELL, the 'FREE' upgrade is on the way, but I have a copy of W7 from MSDNAA, but when I installed it there was almost zero support for my drivers... DELL has promised a resource CD that will contain the necessary drivers, but I'm pretty sure that my after market adapter (NETGEAR WNDA3100) will not be supported.. which leaves me up the creek if a) I dont have any drivers shipped, b) they are out of date...

So... I'm thinking partition my HDD and do a clean install in the new partition to test.

but then, should I reformat the whole HDD and perform a clean install, or just upgrade on the original partition?
or... can I just transfer from the old to the new and remove the Vista partition and expand the Win7 one?
Is this ok? I know everyone says its always better to do a clean install, but it seems easier to just upgrade... and i've just finished installing my favourite apps etc...


Any thoughts??

I'm not a computer novice and can usually parse these issues, but I'm at a loss. Would love to blame the wife or kid, but honestly it could have been me... I just don't know when/how it happened.The basic problem is when I do a google search, every return I click on routes me to something else entirely - usually ads for various other crap - anything but the site I meant to hit. It took me a while to get VPN working, so perhaps I'm just not understanding something fundamental here, so here goes.

Setup is this:

Three networks in different parts of the city. All connected to the net via cable modem with a VPN router right behind the modem. Two of the routers are Netgear FVS318, the third is a Planet model of some kind.

I've configured them as one central hub (the main office) and two remote sites.

I have VPN working fine between central and each hub, but can't get the hubs to talk to themselves. Printing, machine location, everything is working between each individual office and the central office. Nothing works between the two remote offices.

I thought that static routes would make this work, but perhaps that doesn't work going through the VPN tunnel?

Main office is 192.168.1.X net; router at 192.168.1.1

Office A is 192.168.5.X. router at 192.168.5.1. Can see everything on main net and office A LAN. Can ping to machines on the 5.1 net and the 1.1 net from each side.

Office B is 192.168.9.X. router is at 192.168.9.1. Can see everything on main net and office B LAN. Can ping to machines on 9.1 net and the 1.1 net from each side.

I try to ping 192.168.9.1 (office A router) from 192.168.5.110 (my machine) and I get no reply.
Static route in my planet router is set to 192.168.9.0, mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1

Static route on my FVS318 at the 9.1. hub is set to 192.168.5.0, mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1

A:VPN with static routes

You need a router.

The only time you don't need a router is when you have a dedicated circuit and no routing is done what so ever.

Once you are dealing with more than a Point to point connection, you must have a router.
If you get a Cisco router, RIP will automatically build a routing table.
Of note,

10.x.x.x
172.x.x.x
192.168.x.x
ALL ARE ILLEGAL non routable addresses on the internet.
You must have a router or a gateway that will add a legal address to move data across a TCP/IP network.

You also have some of your equipment configured in different networks.
If this is intentional, you MUST have a router.

192.168.1.x is one network
192.168.5.x is yet another
192.168.9.x is yet anoter network.
None of these networks can ever communicate with each other without a router.
Your network masks look ok. They are default.

The x.x.1.x can only ping anyghing in the x.x.1.x range and the same with the other 2 addresses. To overcome this, I will repeat, you need a router and a routing table that tells the router how and where to get x.x.1.x to x.x.5.x or any other way you need to communications.

I suggest you get a book and study hard and long TCP/IP.

The fix here is easy but very lengthly to explain and
the professional that can do this is worth $200.00 an hour as a contractor.

However, all of a sudden, only one computer can connect to the Internet at a time. Sometimes it is one computer, and sometimes it is the other. We're hesitant to switch over to a router, because we can't play video games (Starcraft) on both computers on a router, but we can with the hub (when it works).

Despite it's usefulness, a pure 'hub' does nothing intelligent. That is to say, it simply passes traffic to every port and lets the host decide whether that traffic is needed. A few years ago, this was convenient for most networks since folks didn't need to worry about non-routable connections or bandwidth/performance, etc.

Nowadays, performance can be an issue but as you say, it was working fine for a year. I doubt (then) that your hub is at fault. I would look toward the hosts (your 2 PC's) or your DSL modem/router as a start.

Laptop is acting strangely as of late. I was playing a game and had a GPU driver crash, which subsequently locked up my system. After having to force power it down I got stuck in the startup repair loop. I tried startup repair at least 10x, and it would always say it couldn't correct the problem. On every attempt it came back as a "Bad Driver" as the issue. On my last attempt to boot it finally went through to windows, but things are randomly crashing. I checked AVG, which says resident shield isn't active and it cannot turn itself on. I tried to run several scans and they all fail automatically saying that they were terminated. I ran Malwarebytes and it did not find anything. I would appreciate any help that I could receive.

Ok, here's the scoop. I have to use a Dial up networking connection to connect to a VPN to access specific programs needed for work. But I also need to access a website for work that lags out through the VPN. I tried to set it up so everything gets routed through my local gateway, and set static routes for the addresses I needed to access through the VPN. But I also need access to multiple ip addresses in the 73.xxx.xxx.xxx range that I couldn't add each one individually. Is there a way to add an entire ip range to a static route? My only other option is to add that one webpage I need to a static route that will route through my local gateway, the only problem is the dns server for the VPN holds an internal IP address for the website. Where as I need to access it from the public internet ip address. So adding the website's public IP address to the static route does nothing as it tries to revert back to the domain name and attempts to resolve the 10.xxx.xxx.xxx ip address. Only way I can think to get this working is to have a static route for the dns name (www.whatever.com) and have any traffic to that website routed through my local gateway, if that's even possible.
I appreciate any help that you guys can provide.

I'm a bit confused on how your network flow is going. And it looks like your VPN connection allows split tunneling. It is not a problem to add static routes both based on a contiguous range of IPs or multiple individual IPs. I'm not sure if you understand the concept of subnets and subnet masks.

But using your example above and picking some arbitrary IPs plus assuming you're talking about a Windows box, you can do individual IP static routes by issuing a command like this: route -p add 73.1.1.100 mask 255.255.255.255 10.1.1.1 . The 73.1.1.100 is the target IP you're trying to reach. The 255.255.255.255 after the mask option states this is a single host. And the 10.1.1.1 defines what your gateway is to reach the target IP. And the -p after the route command states this route is to be persistent and not go away if you reboot the box. You can then follow up with the next destination host IP by issuing a similar command of route -p add 73.1.1.101 mask 255.255.255.255 10.1.1.1 and so on.

If you want to do a range of contiguous IPs, you would use a modified structure to the command. Say you want to reach all IPs within the range of IPs from 73.1.1.1 through 73.1.1.6, you would issue a static route command like this: route -p add 73.1.1.0 mask 255.255.255.248 10.1.1.1 .

In Red Hat Linux you have an option to set up 'static routes' for any of your networking ports (i.e. eth0).

Take a look of this:

this is an INTERFACE (nic), not a port

XP/Pro will allow ROUTE ADD to effech changes in the routing, but changing
the subnet mask will suffice AND it is host OS independent

I searched in the forum and I couldn't find the answer to my problem, so here it is:

I need to manually configure a route in one computer that is connected to different networks, with two different gateways, one is on a cabled interface, the other uses a wireless adapter. The wireless connection is for internet, and the proper configuration is this:

Windows 7 x64
IP Address: 10.190.49.111 (or any other termination needed)
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.190.49.254

The cable connection is for a dedicated server that stores images from 10 IP cameras. Any computer connected and configured in this network can use a specific program for real time monitoring. The config is as follows: (I did not configured this server)

Windows Server 2008 R2
Cameras: 162.16.0.50 to 59
IP Address: 167.200.210.133
Mask: 255.255.255.252
(things are messy on the server, I can post a Screenshot if needed)

A computer perfectly working and monitoring the cameras uses this configuration:

IP Address: 162.16.0.15
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 162.16.0.10 or 167.200.210.133, both works
(This computer do not access internet, and is not required)

THE OBJECTIVE:
Add a computer connected to the camera server with cable interface, and connected to the internet with the wireless adapter.
Already tried to manually add a route for the internet/cameras with no succcess.

Any ideas ?

A:Help on creating routes for two gateways

Odd that you can not set what you want with each adapter, can you post a screen shot of your network connections window. Also try leaving the gateway blank for only the lan connection so that all internet traffic goes though the wireless only and resolves correctly. Since you have two diff subnets it should just in theory work.

setting up a quick wifi network for a buisiness.
i want to keep it segregated from their primary network.

i'm using linksys wifi router and a secoand access point.

in the past, routers i'd use would get an ip address from the main router/gateway, and i'd set the lan side ip address to a different subnet.
say subnet 1 is 192.168.1.0 and subnet 2 is 192.168.2.0
the new router (actualy both a linksys and a motorola i tried) automaticaly set a static route to the other subnet. Maybe they always did this and i've forgotten what i have done previously

so we have:
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 1 WAN
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 1 WAN
192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 1 LAN

now i can't delet line 2 in the router or overwrite it, just won't let you (i think)

so i add a route to nowhere before it:
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.254 1 LAN

this sends everything for 192.168.1.0 back into the lan, essentialy blocking it.
Is there anything wrong with this hack?
Can anyone think of a better way? (with a cheap off-the-shelf router)

here is an example of a traceroute I do to any site, no matter what site it is.

Can someone explain wtf is happening??
I have no problems with NSLOOKUPS / PINGS/ AND BROWSING but traceroutes are all bungled up.

No antivirus installed.
Just did a fresh install of XP w/SP1
no change.

NIC 2 is connected to ISP 2 via router 2 and is using IP 2 - FTP server
For NIC 2,

1) Where should the static routes be added -- in the server's OS (Win2K) or in router 2?

2) What specific routes should be added if the purpose is exclusively an FTP server?

I am in a workgroup environment using several W2K3 servers
I have one server connected to the net for ntp time.microsoft.com.
I want all other servers to look to it as their ntp server.
I have configured and tested this and it works correctly, however, after a short time the system will revert to looking to time.microsoft.com and will no longer look to the internal machine
Please help, I have been doing this for hours and am feeling a little insane

Whatever I aquired has disabled my firewall and will not let me re-enable it as well as keeping me from updateing my virus protection software and re-routing me sites when i try to access microsoft updates and other search results. It would not boot in safe mode however, I finally got it to with network allowed and scanned with housecall (trendmicro). It removed 13 worm/trojan's but to no avail. Sorry I do not have more info.

We are running Windows XP.When I start up my account on my computer, I get an error saying Google Installer encountered a problem and had to close.If we go into firefox, and type in a page, the browser often reroutes to another page, such as hxxp://www.physicos.com/search.phpWhen i start up firefox i get a message that asks if i want to make it my default browser. it always was and this is something the bug changed. even if i click yes it asks next time i start firefox.Eventually the browser freezes and the mouse moves around but we can't click anything and have to shut down the computer. I was runnning into some external problems today with internet (a site that was getting overloaded all the time), so I decided to restart my laptop because internet was starting to lag alltogether

When I rebooted, I went to enter my password, and it sent me straight to a temporary profile. I can still access my files, but it's really annoying with all the detours I have to take.

I tried to resolve it following the steps I got from my own 'help' in on my laptop (like that ever works), but I was getting nowhere. Anybody any ideas?

So we are doing Static Routing now in CCNA2 and I ran into difficulty in the lab running on Cisco 2600's. I'm now attempting to do it from home on Packet Tracer because I want to know where I am going wrong, but Packet Tracer is not cooperating.

For instance I will enable IP debugging:

R1#debug ip routing

Then I'll enter global config mode and declare a new IP address of 172.16.3.1 255.255.255.0, but I cannot view the debug info. It never appears, regardless of whether or not I enter the "no shutdown" command.

This is angering me because I want to see where I am going wrong, I will enter the ip route command and enter what I assume are the correct addresses (basing myself off of the lab sheet plus various internet sources they appear correct) but they never appear in the Routing Table even though the router accepts my command.

Even when I declare the default address of all 0's it won't work despite having worked in the lab. It never appears in the routing table.

Any ideas? They would be greatly appreciated...

Is there a command that has to be entered to save the ip route to the table after the "ip route" command?

I have spent a couple months fiddling in vain to find, and remove what has infected my entire network. Beginning with an iPhone, all the way to a child's new Laptop. It's rather passive in it's nature, and it's overall agenda is unknown. I can't download a clean DBAN ISO, as it's hijacked once loaded, I can't clean an Android phone, cause it hijacks the software used to do so. Hello everyone nice to meet you my name is John
My problem is when I click on my email notifier Im initially routed to my gmail account but no sooner than I see the page loading, I'm re-routed to my Yahoo email address. As soon as my email address page is loaded, I can click the back arrow and return to gmail, it loads fine. It annoying, also I noticed if I click a link in an email within my gmail inbox, I get re-routed to yahoo email address, seems no matter what I do, I find myself back to yahoo.

I have a Windows 7 RC 7100 and have a problem with changing routes on it here at work.

We have 3 gateways

10.1.1.1 - default gateway via DHCP for internet browsing
10.1.1.2 - Backup
10.1.1.3 - highspeed for site-to-site connections
(not real addresses)

When I do the command;route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.1.1.3
It says OK

When I do the command;route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.1.1.1
It says OK

However, I can no longer ping the internet.

If I subsequently do (i.e. revert to the Default Gateway)route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.1.1.1
It works again.

If I do these exact same commands on Windows XP they work ?!?!?

Has windows 7 made some more changes to the networking that I do not know ?

A:Changing routes not working in Win7, but do in WinXP

Not sure if this is relevant - but are you entering the commands into an elevated, (run as administrator), command prompt.
I know this did solve similar issues in Vista

Okay, so I have a network that I'm doing for a lab in CCNA2. It's straight forward, and I have half of it working. Here's a diagram to show the topology and the addresses:

R2 and R3 are communicating fine and the PCs in those networks can ping each other, but I cannot ping R1 from R2 or vice versa. I don't see where I'm going wrong, since my IP addresses are all correct and from what I can tell I'm using the proper addresses for the static route.

Ahh my bad. I had R2's Static Route configured as "172.168.2.2" instead of "172.16.2.2". Stupid mistake...

I have a client that is growing rapidly. 14 users now. expects 50 inside 6 months. A single DSL connection is adequate now, but may not be as they grow. Seems to me I can purchase a faster connection or an addtional connection. The latter would seem more reasonable because iit would provide a redundant path to the internet.

What sort of router is available to aggregate this kind of service? Or am I thinking nonsense?
 

A:Redundant DSL

I'd suggest a different kind of connection, perhaps cable. That way the exposure is minimized for a total outage. You can connect them both with a dual-WAN router. This gives you access to all the bandwidth and automatic backup if one service fails.

I have been using System Mechanic Professional (annual subscription required) It's a suite of programs . It includes Iolo Antivirus and Firewall, and it keeps track od everything from excessive system clutter, to registry errors, disk fragmentation and even memory fragmentation.
Well, about 3-4 months ago I decided to try out the Norton Security Suite. My internet provider, Comcast now offers it free of charge to all broadband subscribers.
I uninstalled System Mechanic with the idea of NOT re-installing the Iolo Firewall or Antivirus. Norton seems to have the clearly better reputation for internet security.
However, the Norton product also comes with several things that the System mechanic is also "maintaining/ optimizing" Both will periodically scan and repair registry errors. Norton does something called "Disk Optimization." (I think this involves defragmenting and maybe running something like the chkdsk /f /r command.

Would it be strongly advisable to pick either the Norton or the Iolo product and completely uninstall the other?

A:Redundant Programs

Yes - It is HIGHLY advisable to only run one A/V at a time.

Running more than one A/V can have catastrophic results. It's possible they will try to access or scan the same file at the same time, and it has been known to cause crazy things.

Choosing an A/V is a personal opinion in many eyes. I personally prefer ESET NOD32. Also, something you should know - I have seen Norton cause computers to crash and slow down computers performance drastically. Although, some people swear by Norton... the choice is yours.

Another note about "registry scanners" or registry errors - It's best to not have them running. Programs technically can't decide if a registry entry is "bad" or "good" - so it makes it's best guess. If the program makes the wrong choice - your computer could very easily be a very heavy paper weight.

Which ever A/V you decide to use - it's advised to use the removal tool for the other one to make sure everything is completely gone from your system.

Norton Removal Tool

It seems System Mechanic doesn't offer a removal tool. Just uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs dialog box and see if that removes it completely from your system.

Just now installed Update (KB3176936) for Windows 10 x64-Based Systems......Upon restart my Google Drive Desktop Icon has turned into a white rectangle ( I can go to the icon properties and assign a generic one from Windows ) but I want to try to fix it. What annoys me even more is the fact that on my lock screen at Windows Startup I have two new user icons for switching users. I am the only user but the new icons have my name on both......see example below. Can someone tell me how to get rid of these redundant icons? Red arrow shows what I am talking about...
