Dell M4800 CPU locked in low power state

Q: Dell M4800 CPU locked in low power state

I have a Dell M4800 with a Core i7 4900MQ, however I cannot get it to run above 800MHz - even on Prime95. I have tried enabling the high performance power plan but to no avail. CoreTemp is not reporting high temperatures so that is not the issue.
Also the GPU *may* be running at 405MHz when it should be at 666MHz, although I've had conflicting readouts from different programs on that. Again, no high temps.
Does anyone know what the problem might be here?

Preferred Solution: Dell M4800 CPU locked in low power state

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Dell M4800 CPU locked in low power state

Does the system correctly identify the AC adapter, or does it show "unknown" in setup (F2 at powerup)?
If the AC adapter is not correctly identified (or is a non-Dell third party adapter), the system will run as if on battery all the time -- keeping the CPU speed exactly as you see it.

Hi, I have had about 5 crashes in the last month. Below are 2 of them from the whocrashed report. I tried googling this issue, but most of what I found is specific to a driver. My whocrashed report does not mention a specific driver. This is a Dell XPS 13 which I bought only about a month ago. Also, I should mention that in Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation next to "Generic PnP monitor" and when I click properties, under device status it says:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

{Unable to Load Device Driver}
%hs device driver could not be loaded.
Error Status was 0x%x
I do not use an external monitor, so I'm guessing it's referring to my laptop screen. Not sure if this is relevant to the crashes or not.

Thanks in advance!

Second issue - tried to reboot several times as the laptop did connect to the internet for 2 minutes on reboot. All times, reboot fails and I get the following message: Driver Power State Failure.

I have a real stumper.  The power button does not function.  Will not turn on the laptop. I set the bios to power on with A/C, so I can get it to power on by unplugging and replugging the power cord.    When Window has power switch set  to sleep or to shut down -- it does not.  Holding the power switch down will not shutdown the laptop.
I installed the latest bios from the support pages.  I replaced the CMOS battery.  I replaced the power switch. While I had it opened up I checked for loose connections, debris, dirt, etc.   At least to the point I had access (I did not open beyond removing the palm rest to get to the power switch).
Everything else on the laptop seems to work just fine.  Not sure what to do next with this.  Sad part is this started about 4 weeks after the Dell service expired.

When my computer restarts the touchpad (that I keep turned off as I use a mouse) keeps turning itself back on. This is a recent problem in the past 4 months. Previously I could use the Fn F5 key and keep the touch pad off. Now the Fn F5 key no longer seems to control the touch pad and I have to go into the control panel every time my computer restarts. This is becoming a problem.
I am still on Windows 7- is this the cause?
Something else?
Please advise.

Hello, I have a Dell Precision M4800, i7-4940MX that came with 8GB of Samsung memory.  I have installed a Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD in the SATA, and a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB in the mSATA slot.  I am running BIOS version A13.  I have disabled the Intel HD Graphics in the BIOS so it only uses the Nvidia Quadro K2100M.  Everything was working fine.
I wanted to upgrade to 32GB memory so I bought 2 Patriot Viper 2x8GB kit.  Model: PV316G160LC9SK.  Each SODIMM module is supposed to be 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 1.35V 9-9-9-24.
When I remove the Samsung memory and install the Patriot Viper memory in all 4 slots or just 2 slots, the computer doesn't boot and I receive the LED blink code "No memory modules are installed/detected"
However, if I leave the Samsung memory in two of the slots and at the same time install two of the Patriot memory in the other two slots, the computer will boot.  BIOS will show 24GB however it shows the speed of 1333 instead of 1600.  If I remove the Samsung memory, once again it will not boot with the Patriot memory alone.
Why is the Patriot memory not recognized by itself and why can't I boot from it?
I looked at the Patriot Memory with the program CPU-Z. The timing tables shows JEDEC#3, JEDEC#4, JEDEC#5, XMP-1600.  All voltages say 1.35V
Why is there no memory settings or XMP setting in the BIOS?  Why would Dell offer me an unlocked ... Read more

Having a strange issue with the Touchpad on my Dell Precision M4800. When I disable it using the Dell software or using the Fn+F5 hotkey, it has a tendency to come back on after a random interval of time. I want it to stay turned off permanently, as I prefer to use the Pointstick exclusively.
When using the Fn hotkey, I get a notification onscreen as well as a popup in the system tray saying "Touchpad notification: Your touchpad has been disabled." If I manually disable it through the Dell Pointing Devices software, I get the same effect, but without the notification. In either case, this works great... for awhile.
But then the Touchpad inevitably turns back on. I often don't notice until suddenly my mouse cursor is behaving erratically, at which point I try to swipe my finger on the touchpad and sure enough, it's become enabled again.
However after some further experimenting it turns out the "random" aspect of this is not totally random and I can reproduce the issue quite reliably by furiously scanning my finger back and forth across the Touchpad for a few seconds. Inevitably, the touchpad will turn back on, and I will get the notification "Your touchpad has been enabled." No buttons or hotkeys are pressed, all I have to do is move my finger on the touchpad surface rapidly and within seconds of starting to do that, it will re-enable itself. Again, there is also a notification that it has been re-enabled when this happens, so the software... Read more

A:Dell M4800 Touchpad keeps turning itself back on

I had the same problem.   I believe this is a "feature" in that it allows a person who, let's say forgot their travel mouse, to turn the touchpad on again.   The problem is that its too sensitive.   Here's the solution.
(I found the part of the solution here:  http://geekswithblogs.net/dbutscher/archive/2009/09/14/dell-touchpad--enablingdisabling.aspx)

Locate the Program Files\DellTpad directory
Double click on DellTPad.exe
On the bottom, adjust "Touch Check" so that it desensitizes the touchpad to you accidental touches
With this setting all the way Minimum, the touch pad never accidently turns back on, but I can still turn it on by swiping furiously

Hope this helps!

Hi all,
I have a M4800 with dual battery setup.
Both batteries are made in 2016.
When I charge laptop on without working on it, the total capacity of the will only charge up to 85%.
Nevertheless, when I unplug one of the batteries, it doens't matter which one, then the batterie charges up to 100%. When I charge the slice battery with a separated power supply, it also charge up to 95%.
When all batteries are fully charged, then I can see in my battery monitoring software that they are charged up to 106%, as they are charged to their design capacity, and that the "full charge capacity" is at a lower value.
I have tried firmware A18, althoug then my computer will not boot up with dual battery setup. I get a windows bluescreen with (Inaccessible Boot Device), So i returned back to A16

A:Dell M4800 with battery slice charge overnight only up to 85%

I cannot tell if you are saying that you think that there is a fault with the laptop or the batteries? See if any of the data in the Dell Laptop Battery FAQ answers some of your questions. I do not see how the M4800 can run a "dual battery" setup. Please provide some pictures of the setup. I only see the one battery slot.

Hi Shayashkar,

Have you checked first of all that the wireless switch is enabled on the right hand side? Also go in to the BIOS (F2 on startup) and check that the Wireless Switch is set to "ALL" and the Wireless Device Enable is set to "ALL"
If it is still not turning on, I'd suggest updating the Wireless Driver. Follow this link [View:]
and choose Network and download the latest driver for your WLAN card. If you know the Service Tag enter that and it will list the drivers for your particular configuration. Let me know if the issue is resolved or if you are still having issues.

I recently updated my Dell m4800 to BIOS A8 with Windows 7 64. I had been using a collection of older power adapters from my previous Dell m4400 without any issues. After the update, wow. A huge performance hit if I do not have the 19.5 volt and 9.23 amp adapter connected.
The m4400 power adapter is 19.5 volt and 6.7 amp. Pretty close right? Not any more.
I do have it connected to a Dell docking station almost all the time. Just checked. They are both 6.7 amp.
Anyone know what changed in BIOS A8 and what the deal is with the performance? Looks like I need to request a new docking station, but I'm not sure IT will believe my story.

A:Slow Performance without proper Power Adapter after BIOS A8 update on M4800?

I'd like an explanation from Dell as well.
If I'm correct, the crippling started with A07. I have the i7-4900MQ CPU with "Max Qualified Speed" at 2.80 GHz (multiplier 28) and "Max Turbo Boost" speed at 3.79 GHz (x38 ratio). Independent of the BIOS version (A06, 07, 08 or 09), when on the 180W AC power adapter, the CPU runs at x36 ratio i.e 3.59GHz. Even without any processing load. The same goes for battery power, whatever the BIOS version, the CPU speed is at x 34 ratio i.e 3.39 GHz. Again, without any load. On battery power the CPU is at a higher speed than the "Max Qualified Speed" without any need for the Turbo Boost.
Now the problem arose with the version A07 and exists in all of the following versions. When you plug in an adapter which is less than 180W, I have several of the 130W ones, the CPU multiplier drops to 8 which is the absolute minimum and makes up 800MHz. Ridiculous! Right after you remove the power supply you get an immense 3.39 GHz, over 4 times the speed when on AC.
As I need to use the laptop on a dock which has the 130W power supply weekly, I've reverted to BIOS A06 first. The computer is unusable at 800 MHz, it's like going 15 years back in time. The most noticable feature of the newer BIOSes that I like is that they somehow optimize the fans and make them quieter.
Does anyone if there is a limit on how many times the BIOS chip can be flashed?
I'd like Dell to explain why they have made such a move. And ... Read more

I recently bought a Dell Precision M4800 mobile workstation with a Nvidia Quadro K2100 GPU.
I am having issues on video playback - flickering and other lined artefacts towards the top of the display. This occurs during panned shots, rapidly changing images, etc. but this is supposed to be a super graphics card so there should be no problems.
I have tried playout on other monitors/projectors, all with same result. I thought at first there was an issue with the rendering of the video files I had produced from Avid Media Composer but I see the same artefacts on DVD playout and on video from Vimeo/Youtube.
Response from Dell ProSupport has been a little slow (they tell my I "only have basic support") so I'm posting the issue here in case anyone has had similar issues or knows a solution.
My guess is that the GPU is faulty, or perhaps the drivers (though I have checked if these are up to date, and they are).

A:Dell Precision M4800 Quadro K2100 graphics display problem

Ok. I experimented with different resolutions, particularly the native resolution for the laptop monitor of 3200x1800 (I had it a t 1920x1080 so that I am able to read text - Windows hasn't resolved the scaling issue for these new hi res monitors)... Still the same artefacts during playback, although DVD playback on the Laptop monitor was improved.

Mostly this is looking for feedback from other users, and to allow Dell to see there is a problem if others have the same issues.
Just a little note about this computer :

It was purchased with a FirePro 5100m, which had all sorts of lag, issues, and perpetually broken drivers (such as ones from dell failed to allow you to set global power profiles and so on)
hinges were poping/creaking from day one the first time I opened the lid. GPU and CPU fans scraped from day one. Hinges have been replaced 2x in 2 years now. GPU/CPU fans have been replaced once as well.

the hinge thing really bothers me as the replacement set from last time is popping again, and I use the laptop docked most of the time. Id say I open the lid at most 2x a week. Dell claims there is no issue, and put out a PSA post about it that they don't cover it, indicating to me they know there is an issue. But since they switched from spring loaded barrel hinges to these *** pressed together friction sleeves they have had wobble, binding, and are just <cheap> junk I don't expect in my thousand dollar + workstation laptop.
after fighting it for nearly a year I was sent a replacement FirePro 5100m, which did the same things. A Quadro k2100m was also dispatched at the time because I was afraid it was an AMD card based issue due to the number of posts here about it.
This Quadro Card did not receive any driver updates for about 2 years, putting it well behind in some cad software, and because i do play ga... Read more

I am having extreme issues with my SSD speed. It has gotten quite bad. The SSD was a user-upgrade over the HDD that came with the Dell M4800 on the date of purchase. Initially the SSD upgrade worked well (Samsung EVO 850 500 GB). Recently, performance has taken a nose-dive. I have looked for solutions online and come up short and also failed to see any case as bad as my own.

Current Random Write IOPS - 1,144
Current Random Read IOPS - 12,752
Current Sequential Read (MB/s) - 547
Current Sequential Write (MB/s) - 103
OS - Windows 8.1,  64-bit  x64-based processor  - i7-4700MQ
SSD - 211 GB free of 420 GB
RAM - 32 GB

Some of the solutions I've attempted:
Enabling AHCI  (uses an auto-installed Intel driver, which seems funny)
Verified TRIM is enabled
Turning off system restore
Disabling drive indexing
Turning of defragmenting
Turning off paging file
Disabling hibernation
Disable Write-Caching
Turning off superfetch and windows search
Installing my discrete video card drivers again (Intel HD drivers had been updated, and the result was screwing with the usability of the device)
updating Samsung Magician (appears to have made sequential writing and random writing worse)

A lot of the above corresponding to this site: www.computing.net/.../552.html
This all started with updating the drivers for the device for the bios and etc. A number of the updates were marked as urgent, so would prefer not to roll back (security and what not).

The reason I know this is the problem is because if I run 2 DP monitors + laptop screen, my mouse cursor will freeze on the laptop screen and if I keep moving the mouse left I now have a mouse cursor that is moving and then the one on the laptop screen is frozen and then it vanishes. I tried multiple drivers from Dell and AMD and still having the same issue. Not sure what else I could try. Dear Crash Analyzers,
Thank you very much in advance for your assistance, really impressed that you would devote some of your precious time to helping others here. A couple of days ago, after leaving my Asus laptop Locked but running, I came back to find it had crashed and re-booted on its own. It's happened twice more since then, once while idle, once while locked. It does not seem to do this if I close it (Sleep mode) - it has not actually happened while I've been in front of it, but I prefer of course to leave it on most of the time. The significant changes I had made to my computer right before that, if I'm remembering correctly:

I will try to explain this in a clear way:

I am a current student who has a Desktop and a Laptop. My Desktop was a fully functioning 7 Home Prem install using an upgrade from Windows XP. Windows xp was already on this used Desktop (custom build) with no CD Key or Media available to me. Windows 7 upgrade was valid and paid for by me.

I recently began school again and setup my Mac Laptop with Bootcamp, did a Fresh install with the original Win 7 academic HP. Yes, this is a upgrade only version.

I purchased Windows Professional and applied the FULL product key to Windows Anytime Upgrade to my DESKTOP. This upgraded the 7 Home Premium to Pro and took over the "Upgrade Home Prem spot" and freed up my license.

I hadn't used my Laptop in a while (With the fresh HPrem install on it) and it expired. When I went to use my Laptop, it had expired. Foolishly, I tried to use my friends full key because I didn't know how to get the fresh install fixed on the Laptop and I thought "Well, I did pay for this product, lets jut get it working" After I updated the key to a new key, it will not let me change the 7 key BACK to the original paid for Home Premium.

Let me be clear here. All of my products are paid for, I just want to get the Home Premium key back on my Laptop so I can call Microsoft and explain the situation and maybe they will allow me to activate Win7.

Here are 2 scenarios I can think of:

I've done a lot of searches using variations of the above title and came up empty or just plain missed the answer.

I'd like to know, if it is not asking too much, the following points:

1. What exactly is the function of Link State Power Management in the Power Options Advanced Settings, PCI Express?

2. What are the implications of using the options available:

a) Off.
b) Maximum power savings.
c) Moderate power savings.
d) Which option is the best selection for my Dell laptop.

I'd appreciate a feedback on these points.

Thank You for Your time and patience.

A:Power option PCI express Link State Power Mgmt

The function of that power management feature is to manage the power consumed by your PCI devices. PCI components require constant streaming of data when in use so configuring power management to shut them down, or reduce the data stream, when not in use can save some power, which really only has a substantial effect in laptop power savings. The wireless card is usually a PCI component in a laptop, so configuring it for maximum power savings might shut it off when it's not in immediate use. This might introduce some lag into your wireless connection upon first use of the wireless or even during use (if the system decides to shut it down between connections). It's hard to say what impact it will have for you. If you're not extremely worried about getting that extra small fraction of life out of your laptop, I'd leave it alone and configure it not to use power management (keep them on all the time). Otherwise, you can try out the different settings and see if you notice a difference.

I overclock my CPU by changing its FSB and I have scheduled (Task Scheduler) this script to run every time I logon to Windows. But I would like to schedule it to downclock when I pull the power cord and then overclock as I plug it back in. Is this possible? It would also be nice if Windows changed the power plan when switching between AC/battery.

A:How can I change power plan and run scripts based on power state?

Hello Apex,

I'm not sure it's possible to have Windows change power plans automatically like that.

However, if you like, you could use either tutorial below to help make it easier to manually switch between power plans whenever you like.Power Plan - Choose from Desktop Context Menu in Windows

Power Plan - Create Shortcut to Change Power Plan
Hope this helps some,

I have a new Dell XPS 8900 connected to a Dell U2413 monitor using the HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.  When I switch off the monitor (to save the screen and energy), the PC jumps into an unrecoverable power saving mode, shutting down all open applications in doing so.  The mouse and keyboard lock up.  The only way to restart the PC is to press the power button for several seconds (hard reboot).   This began happening recently.  What can be done to fix?

I was trying to reformat my computer to out of box state...... I have toshiba satillite laptop that is about 6 months old. It had a version of windows 7 on there that my buddie put on but I want it off because I think that its pirated, he said he is not using it because his computer wont support it but I dont know, anyway, I dont have the windows 7 disk and I am 1000 miles away from him so I cant get it. During system restore, when it first starts it trys to find the partition that the restore image is put on, it does not use disks. It lock up when trying to find the partition, so I restarted my computer. Now it wont load at all, it says no bootable device found. And I tried to push F8 to see if I can do a start up repair but F8 is no longer working, was before. Any ideas, I am so stuck... Thanks Much! Syrell

A:Reformating my computer to out of box state, locked when finding partition, wont boot

Installing any version of Windows using anything but the Recovery Disks for the particular PC generally overwrites the special MBR the system uses to access the Recovery Partition at boot. Or if Win 7 added it's System Reserved partition when it was installed, the BIOS may simply be looking at the wrong place now.

If you didn't create the Recovery Disk Set, you can contact Toshiba to see if they have them available for your model, and what it might cost, if anything. Usually pretty cheap.

You might be able to use a Win 7 Recovery Environment CD to run Startup repair and get it able to boot back into Windows though.
You can download an ISO of the Win 7 RW disk from here:

My laptop's LAN card is bad so I got a dongle, the problem is that when I plug the dongle in the USB port Power Management activates (checks) "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". This means that the dongle gets turned off causing a fault if not active for a period of time if I forget to change the setting. Is there a way to completely disable the setting?

I was simply coasting the world wide web looking at some 3D modeling info when all of a sudden my monitor goes blank and tells me there is no longer a signal. I turn to my right to peer at my desktop when all of a sudden i hear it go into what seemed to me a low power state yet it was still getting power. I could hear the HDD chirping alittle and the fans were running but yet at a very low db and rpm. I thought maybe this was a freak event and would act as if in sleep mode, so i promptly moved my mouse and struck my space bar... I got nothing. after convincing myself i need to reboot i looked for the reset and pressed it... nothing the pc was still in that odd low power state. so i reached for the power button and held it... again nothing. At this point i became worried that for some strange reason my front display had shorted to i used my on motherboard power switch and held it... and yet again nothing! and I did the worst I hit the switch on my power supply and shut the whole thing down. as puzzled as I was I let it sit off for a time to ponder the reason behind such a thing, then i took my chances and hit the power switch on my front display, it booted the pc. whew! right?... Wrong. I herd the pc turn over and the chirping was lively like i expected but then not 10 secs after i booted it went back into that odd low power state and my screen still showed blank. I should hope its not my power supply tho if it is ill be ok to replace it as I have a 5yr warrenty and its not ev... Read more

When you initiate shutdown on a P70 with Windows 10, does anyone know what power state the laptop goes into? S1-S5, G3 by default? The problem is that the machine will not power back on, HDD light just blinks and the only solution is to remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then power back up. I don't have access to the machine, trying to help remotely and Lenovo's only solution is to return the machine for servicing. I think it is possible the power state that Windows is trying for is not supported by current BIOS settings or by the P70 hardware or faulty hardware. Also possible that the drivers are not installed to support the current settings or some piece of hardware won't wake up (e.g. SSD) from that particular power state. Any recommendations on BIOS settings, hibernate, Windows power settings to resolve this? The current solution is just to never use Shutdown. Thanks

Let's try this, 3 different requests here.
Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html .
Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.
When autoscan is done (screen comes up), click Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.
Save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.
Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:

A:power state failure

DRIVER_POWER STATE_FAILURE is a common BSOD and it is really hard to say what is causing it without collecting and analyzing some basic info about your system.
As this error is very common by faulty drivers please uninstall the following items from 'Control Panel" and update to the latest drivers available in Lenovo site.
    a ) Display
    b ) Chipset
    c ) LAN and WLAN
d ) Lenovo Energy management software
c ) Antivirus Software (Necessary as this can be caused by kernel mode  driver installed by AV programs ). Download latest setup from the respective  site.
Download the latest drivers and Antivirus setup to a local folder in your Laptop. Now uninstall in the following order - Energy management software,LAN, WLAN , display , chipset and then AV. If any of them asks for restarting please do so. Re install them in the reverse order. That is chipset first and energy management last. Install AV after drivers finishes.
Please post how your system works after updating those. If the issue still remains we need to analyze your crash dump files for further steps. Also you will be required to run some info gathering tools.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite S55-C5363 and I have been semi-frequently getting BSOD due to "Driver Power State Failure." This usually happens when I try to run software that is somewhat graphically intensive, such as solidworks or photoshop. In either case, they run for a period of time (sometimes long, sometimes short), and then I encounter the bluescreen. I believe my computer has a good enough specs to run this software. Either way, I don't think my computer should be crashing.
I have malwarebytes installed and am currently running a scan. I just installed bluescreenview. Let me know if I should download any software and attach any logs. Attached is a log from speccy.
Thank you.

A:Driver Power State Failure

The one thing I notice straight away from your specs is that you're running an Nividia 950m graphics card in your laptop, with version 354.35 drivers.
The latest drivers for this model of card are at version 375.70 (available here), Seeing as you experience driver failures when performing graphically intense operations, you may well find that a straight update to the latest drivers from Nvidia might well solve your problems.

Running an HP Quad Core with Vista Home Premium SP2. The last two months I've been getting BSOD's on hibernation. Error message indicates it a DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE.

I've updated all drivers and uninstalled software added just before the first BSOD, with the exception of Skype. Attached a .zip with the last four MiniDump files. I've tried analyzing them with Windbg, but I can't get the symbols to load properly.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
