Dell OptiPlex 3030 powers up, fan runs, but the screen is black

Q: Dell OptiPlex 3030 powers up, fan runs, but the screen is black

Hi, I am a new IT person at a very small school. Our receptionist has a OptiPlex 3030 All In One. Her computer has been working fine, but this morning when she turned it on it just powered up and the screen stayed black. We tried numerous times to restart it and we keep getting the same result. I've now unplugged it and we haven't touched it in a while. I'm not quite sure what to do in this situation. I am going to try connecting another display to it. But I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution to this? I read somewhere that inserting the OS disk and reinstalling the Windows 10 would work, but I don't want to have to do that.

Preferred Solution: Dell OptiPlex 3030 powers up, fan runs, but the screen is black

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Tried to connect a second display and that didn't work either.

We installed 42 Dell OptiPlex 3030 All-in-One desktop PCs in a school 3 months ago and have recently been having problems with about 12 of them after they all had all been working fine.
On boot up, the Dell logo appears but Windows 7 does not start and all we get is a black screen. Pressing F5 or F8 will not bring up the Boot Options screen.
F2 will get us into the BIOS and running diagnostics does not reveal any problems with any of the hardware, and there are no error messages in the BIOS log.
The only way to get the PC working again is to re-install (re-image) the operating system (Windows 7 Professional SP1). The BIOS is configured exactly them same on all 42 PCs and they all have the same Operating system and applications.
We have put the hard drives of the faulty 3030's into known, good working 3030's in the school, and they still won't boot up which suggests the issue is either a faulty hard drive or a software issue (possibly a Windows Update file?).
On 3 of the PCs, we have had to re-install the Operating system twice in the space of a few weeks, so I'm wondering if this batch of 3030's we purchased might have a manufacturing fault with the hard drive.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thank you.

A:Dell optiplex 3011 No display (Black Screen)

Remember that all in ones are similar to laptops. If your model has a video out port, connect an external monitor to see if the computer is at fault or the screen. Either way there is not much you can do. All in ones are difficult or impossible to repair/replace parts because all or most parts are on the mainboard which is in the monitor. See your manuals at dell support to find out what can be replaced.

My granddaughters boyfriend was given this pc.  He asked me to see if it worked.
When plugged in and hooked to monitor, It powers on and runs but all I get is a black screen w/cursor blinking.
There is no Dell screen, No boot options displayed.
I removed the HDD and cd/dvd rom drive.  Still nothing but black screen w/cursor.
I'm baffled...
I'm good with pc's and have fixed many but still I'm little more than a novice.  This is a problem I've never run into before.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all,

I have a Dell Optiplex 210L and if I leave the computer running in Windows XP and come back to it lets say the next day. I have to hold the power button in until it forces a shutdown and then turn it back on to get the computer working. It then works fine until it happens all over again.

Computer is running Windows XP SP2.

My business has over 200 Optiplex 3030 AIOs and we use our own copy of Windows image on all of them. We are rolling out a new one but we cannot get the side buttons to function. The power buttons works fine but the other ones above it do not work at all.

We have all the drivers installed so I'm not sure what else is needed. It's the same on all computers so it's not a hardware issue.

We have several 3030 AIO desktop computers running Windows 7 on our campus.  Any of these machines imaged with Windows Deployment Services will BSOD at boot.  The error is: stop 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFF80000003, 0xFFFFF8800536F02D, 0xFFFFF88003FD8EC8, 0XFFFFF88003FD8720)
We have another server (2012r2 upgrade) that deploys Windows 7 to these AIO desktops without issue, so we know it's not our image.  It would seem the drivers are OK too, since the other server doesn't have the same issue.  That said, we can deploy images to any other Dell computer, desktop or laptop, without BSOD and Windows 10 works fine.So far we have tried:
the driver .cab files from 2014, 2015, and the most recent
Server 2012 R2 and 2016 (completely fresh install)
Dell's diagnostic utility (Pre-boot System Assessment)
Resetting BIOS to default
We've hit a dead end and I'm hoping someone can recommend something new to try.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Folks,
I'm using an Optiplex 3030 AIO with touchscreen as a broadcast audio playout system and have noticed that if the mouse is being moved it disables the touch screen until the mouse stops moving. Is there a way to either make both the touch screen and mouse work at the same time or reverse this prioritising so that the touch screen takes priority over the mouse?
In the situation i'm using this in, the touchscreen operation is much more important than being able to use the mouse. I've tried looking through various windows settings but don't seem to be able to find any options to alter this behaviour.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Dear all,
here's a weird issue with an Optiplex 3030 AIO on a customer site...
The system was initially bought with Windows 7 Pro SP1 and back then in late 2015
updated to Windows 10 Pro. Everything was OK so far with this setup - no issues at all.

However - this specific 3030 AIO tries to apply the anniversary update (1607) as well - but fails.
When it's doing this from within windows itself it reboots automatically (as part of the update process)
and starts applying the update - but will hang there at 30% for days (started update at friday afternoon - met customer at monday... and the Optiplex 3030AIO still showed the spinning circles
at 30 percent.
We tried this 3 times within the last 8 weeks (and cleaned up SoftwareDistribution\ folder after each fail) with no success in installing the anniversary update. After a cold reboot - Windows 10 rolls back
to the previous version and keeps working fine until the Windows Update magic decides that it's time
for the automatic upgrade again...
When this happened for the 4th time (earlier this week) we removed this Optiplex 3030 AIO from
the customer site and thought it would be good to reinstall from scratch -  using the latest installation media (USB) offered by the most current media creation tool.

Problem - we cannot even do a clean install of the anniversary release - although DELL claims that
the Optiplex 3030 AIO is fully supported (see SLN297954 in DELL knowledge base).
When doing so it never finishes ... Read more

I recently tried to turn on my computer. It appears to power up, but there's nothing on the screen. I tried running the LCD test (power + D) and see the flashing colors so screen appears to be working.  Tried to run the POST (?) test (power + Fn) and can hear lots of beeping, but I cannot see anything on the screen. At one point early on, I must have pressed something to turn on the verbal assistance, because it was reading to me. That has stopped, though. Any suggestions for a fix?  I'm on a work trip overseas, so I'm not able to hook it up to an external monitor to see if that works.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

trouble started today... fan was whining so checked it and rebooted, got some bad beeps(7 then 1 long 2 short i think), rebooted again and it booted fine but fan was barely turning so powered off and bought new fan, put it in... started booting, fan started, it was checking drives and then just powered off...

took the opportunity to get new case and power supply and put everything together again... same problem

disconnected all but the motherboard... same problem

would love to hear that this could be something other than a fried mobo...

A:no boot, black screen, powers itself off

Sounds to me that you have a short circuit that is grounding your MoBo (where it shouldn't be grounded)

make sure that you did not install any standoffs where they don't belong. remove your mobo from the case, verify that your standoffs are in the right spots for your mobo and form factor. the holes that your mobo should have mounting screws in will have a metal ring around them, if it doesn't, then dont use a mounting screw or metal standoff there (you can use a plastic standoff if you want)

before reinstalling the mobo, try "table testing" it first...boot up without mounting it in your case to verify that everything works before installing it

My son has a Lenovo G580 running Win 8.  He uninstalled McAfee AV which completed and indicated a reboot was required. He rebooted and Win 8 did not start.  Has a black screen.  Power lights come on and I can hear the fan running.  When powering up, there is a quick noise from the DVD drive being engaged, but then no other noise -- just the fan.
I was going to try to use a recovery disk, but he does not have one.  Can one be created using a Win 7 machine?

A:Laptop powers up to a black screen

It's a good point about using the Windows 7 system repair disk for Windows 8. I do not know if that has been tried before or even if it is possible. Both use the BCD store for booting. But because this happened after Mcafee was uninstalled, I think it has affected more than just the boot files. I googled and found other people had the same problem of a blank screen after an uninstall.
Try the following first.
Remove the power cord and battery. Press the power button for 30 seconds. Attach the power cord but leave the battery out. Power up the computer.
Are there any files that need to be recoverd from the laptop?
Levono has a button that will start the factory reset process. It's called the NOVO button and looks like a little arrow. I am not sure where it is on your computer but if you do a factory reset, all files that were put on the computer after purchase will be deleted so do not do this until you have recovered all of your files.

So my laptop powered on and I hear the fan and everything sounds normal, up until when the option to type in my password should appear. At first, there was no screen to type in my password. Now, there's the Windows logo, but the cursor doesn't move and there's no box to type in my password.

I tried a quick google and people suggested unplugging the adapter, taking out the battery, and pressing the ON button for 15-60 seconds. I did that and all it did was have the Windows logo pop up. I've tried booting it in safe mode, but nothing shows up.

So I tried step 3 from this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03518165&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en but pressing F10 didn't take me to the BIOS settings. The only option was to press enter, and it led me to options such as system restore or fixing the hardware.

Now this lets me see the screen perfectly fine, so what's going on? I can only see the screen here, but not on normal boot up or safe mode. I tried a system restore but that did not work. I'm currently in the VAIO Recovery Center and I ran a Quick Test and nothing was wrong. So I just did a "hard disk verify and repair" and it said it found something wrong but repaired it. I just restarted and still nothing, just a black screen with the Windows logo, no box to type in my password and the cursor can't move.

Do I need to get something replaced or what? Oh and this laptop is about 5 years old. If I nee... Read more

What operating system to you have? Windows 7? 8?

It sounds like the hardware is functioning, but something for Windows is corrupt. I had the exact same problem on a computer a couple of weeks ago.

I had a Windows on my flash drive, plugged it in, and choose to use startup repair to fix the problem. Ironically in my case, it said it failed, but it did fix the problem.

If you don't have a Windows disc, in your recovery settings, you should be able to choose startup repair. Sounds like upon booting the computer, you have to press enter. Not sure where to go from there on your computer. Can you provide all the options you see from that screen or see if you can find? Also, what is the make and model of your pc?

Hi Yall,
So I have successfully (I think) installed my new Radeon R7 250 "low profile" graphics card on my Dell Optiplex 9020.  I plugged it in the motherboard, started up the computer then went to Device Manager to update the drivers--which I did.  Side note: Ever since plugging the graphics card into the motherboard, some tasks like starting programs or starting windows take 2-10X as long as they used to.  Anyhow, it then asked for a restart, which I did.  The computer still took extra long to start any program, and when I plugged the monitor into the graphics card all I got was a black screen.
Take two:  I then read that I should have uninstalled my current graphics driver (Intel integrated HD graphics) before I installed my new graphics card, but failing this, I could uninstall my old graphics card and change the default graphics card in the bios.  I uninstalled the old card and went to the bios, but could not change the default...can't remember exactly what it called it, graphics controller or something.  I could see that intel HD graphics was still the default (this is after uninstalling intel HD graphics and then restarting) but could find no way to change this.  Supposedly dell will make the switcheroo on its own...but it doesn't seem to have.
Take three:  Next I physically removed the graphics card, restarted the computer, then physically inserted the graphics card again, then started the comp... Read more

Hi there fellas.

I have had my comp for about 3-4 years. I have never had any problems but this week when I turned it on the screen remained black and said "no signal". Obviously there is no output from the graphics card and I have tried a second moniter which also failed. Im almost certain that this is a hardware problem.

When the PC boots up, the LED's on the flash card drives and floppy drive are permenently on. However, when the PC was working these lights would flash briefly and then go off while the boot sequence continued.

I have opened the case and turned the power on. The CPU fan and PSU fan are both spinning but the fan on the graphics card is not. The two DVD drives both work but there is still nothing on the screen.
Im not sure if the hard-drives have power because they are quite hidden.

Im am unsure of how to proceed. I thought I would seek some advice before physically taking it to a specialist.

My PC:

Intel Pentium 4 HT Processor 550 3.4 Ghz
Motherboard - MS 7046
Seagate ST3200822AS 200GB SATA - HD

Thanks for spending the time to read this.
Any advice whatsoever would be great.

I have a HP Compaq 6820S that all of a sudden has stopped working   It had been on unattended for a few hours, and when I came back to it it had frozen with a black screen (I had to hold the power button to turn it off).  Now, when I power it up, the fan kicks in, the caps lock LED flashes on then off, the wireless and power button LEDs stay lit, and the DVD drive continously clicks - but nothing else (screen remains black /off, no beeps, no BIOS/ POST screen). I've tried with hard disk and/or memory removed, and with/without the battery inserted - with the same result as above each time.   EDIT: have also left the battery out for 24 hours too.  When on nothing happens (caps lock/num lock keys don't light up when pressed, wireless LED doesn't go off when pressed).  I've also tried exporting to an external display, again with no luck.  I suspect the motherboard is dead, and it may be new laptop time, but wanted to check here in advance in case anyone has any other suggestions.  Can anyone suggest anything?

Any suggestions?

Its possible that the motherboard is failing or has failed.have it looked at so that you will know for sure the exact problem.from what i understand the xps laptops are for gaming and are known for having motherboard issues.as far as the stuck cd try to go to the cd/dvd drive itself and try to eject it or use a paperclip to try to pop open the drawer.

Hello anyone who can help!

I have a Lenovo Laptop Thinkpad Edge E520 8GB RAM, Intel CPU B960 Pentium Processor 2.2GHZ

Recently when I have powered up my laptop it occasionally doesn't load properly, the screen stays black. You can hear the laptop working fine but you cannot see anything.

This happens once or twice a week, I usually hold on the power button for 5 seconds, then reboot and it resumes my hibernate settings as usual

Could this be because I always hibernate my laptop?

Can someone please explain what might be causing this problem and how I go about fixing it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop powers on but screen stays black?

Thats a fairly new laptop as i have the edge 530.ive never put any of my computers on hibernate so im not sure if that why its doing that. it sounds like either a power supply problem, a screen problem, or a harddrive problem.or rarely the motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere and have it checked out then you will know for sure and go from there.if you have an external monitor you can try and see if anything shows up on it. if so or even if the other monitor is black i would still start with the screen first as the problem.

Hi everyone!

Whenever you power it on the indicator lights shine but however it seems the screen doesn't want to turn on. I've troubleshooted the computer by doing all I know. Such as removing the battery and draining the excess life in the computer, cleaning the RAM cartilages (also checked to see if it were by chance the RAM themselves), and as far as to dissembling the computer to see if the flex cables had by chance came unhooked. Everything seems to be hooked up and wired just fine. Just no screen display. The fan will turn on after several minutes of the computer idling.

Hope we can work things out!

Powers up to a black screen with NO beep sounds. This started as an occasional non-boot symptom, but now will not boot at all.All other functions appear normal:  power supply light remains on, power button lights up, fan is constant, hard drive spins, optical drive can open and disks sound as spinning. What I have tried: Power supply brick has been tested.Hard drive has been pulled (for data recovery) and is confirmed working.CMOS has been reset, battery replaced with new. When single 8GB RAM stick is removed, I get 5 beeps, a pause and patten is repeated.  Can anyone familiar with this model  confirm if these beeps are indicating ram failure or motherboard failure? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Pavilion 23-b319 Powers up to Black screen, no beeps

@q59, welcome to the forum. The first component that comes to mind when I see these symptoms is the power supply unit (PSU).  However, here is a guide that will help you troubleshoot the hardware to see if it is working properly.  Some of the diagnostics are done from UEFI so the computer doesn't have to boot. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Toshiba Satellite A500-132, Windows 7 So 2 days ago while my laptop was turned on i closed the lid, packed it and took it with me. 1 hour later had to use it so i opened the lid tried to power on. It did but screen was black and i could hear no sound of functionality. Searched the web for a solution and i powered laptop off, removed power cord, battery, rams and hdd. Then kept pressing the ON button for greater than 30 seconds. Reconnected everything and laptop booted windows normally. Last night it happened again and this time the same procedure doesn't seem to fix the situation. This whole things looks very bizzare, never heard of anything similar, i hope you can help! Also, could a cmos rtc battery problem cause such a problem?

Hello guys!
I have a Dell Optiplex 3010 and I have recently installed Windows 7 on it.
I have also installed the drivers and everything works fine, except the video driver, and I cannot get rid of the black bars around my monitor. I know it is a scaling problem and I've read on some forums that this could be fixed easily using  catalyst, but I cannot install it.

Please help.

I am not familiar with this particular system, but in the white box world one often has to set HDMI connections to overscan to use the full screen.

When the PC starts up, the dell loading screen begins. Normally this takes around a few seconds but this time it didn't end. We've tried all the diagnostic tests and they all came back fine. Also tried disconnecting all external cables (ie headphones, ethernet etc). Powered on and off multiple times and no change.
By the way, I don't know if this is related or not, but last night before the issue occurred, I was randomly logged out. Once it logged me back in, everything was closed and there was a small square of like TV static towards the bottom right corner. I restarted and it fixed the issue there but I don't know.
Thanks in advance, Sean

Unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Then try powering up again.

We have had a handful of Dell 7040SFF monitor issues. The user will be in the middle of something-online, email, reading documents and their monitor or monitors will go completely black for about 30 seconds.
Windows 7, 64-bit, 8 GB ram, Intel i5-6500 CPU
I have updated the bios, chipset, and installed the video display drivers and control panel. We have Dell monitor P2014H Flat Panel.
I even went so far to have a user's motherboard replaced. STILL that did not fix the issue.
This investigator with the issue(we are the sheriff's office) figured out the problem...
His 800 MHz police portable radio was the problem. If that radio is less than 4 ft away from the 7040 the monitors do not blank-out. So fortunately that is an easy fix.

Hi. I have a old Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop and its having some issues. First of all, during the boot process, It'll freeze up. It happens at various stages (shortly after POST, During Windows XP boot Splash screen, during XP welcome screen etc.) I've also noticed that any movement of the laptop causes it to freeze as well sometimes. Also sometimes when i try and power it on, the screen will flicker vertical lines for a few seconds and just remain a black screen. Another issue is that When i power it on, the fan inside won't even come on and then sometimes a few seconds later it will cut off and then come back on (sometimes if i tilt it a certain way). I suspect a loose connection at the motherboard maybe. I have no idea how to dismantle a laptop (Only desktops) so any help much appreciated.

So I have this Dell Mini Inspiron 1018 not in correct working condition. As stated in title:
-Powers on.
-No monitor, completely blank.
-Not hearing any kind of beeping.

Any ideas on a solution?

A:Dell Mini Inspiron 1018: Powers On - Blank Screen - No Beeps

Sounds like a display issue, such as a bad LCD or connector.
Try plugging it into a monitor to rule out the possibility of a bad video card.

Just a little backround on my laptop.  It's about six years old, and has 8 gig of RAM and optional ATI Radeon graphics.  It has been used heavily as I do electronic medical records with it as well as personal stuff.  It's not turned off very often; I just keep it in hibernation. One day a couple of weeks ago I had several tabs open in Chrome, one of them being SiriusXM streaming.  My back was turned as I was with a patient and all of a sudden I heard a buzz coming from the audio that lasted a few seconds, then no sound.  When I finally looked at the computer, the screen was black, but everything else was running (leds, hard drive, fan, etc). I pulled the AC power and the battery, restarted Windows in safe mode, and had a display.  I then deleted the video drivers for ATI and Intel, then restarted the computer.  It came back with the screen looking fairly normal to before it went belly up, and also had sound.  Windows then automatically reloaded the video drivers (during which time a box came up and told me the ATI driver didn't exist) and then prompted me to restart.  I did, and sound, leds, hard drive, everything came up except black screen again. Well, I repeated this several times, even went and downloaded the ATI driver off of the site, with the same result.  At that point I decided to use the computer as it was after the first restart and select "restart later" so it wouldn't go back to the black screen.  I... A:Computer runs, screen is black.

Hi, I'm not sure what the problem might be, it might help to plug in a VGA or HDMI display to see if you can get a display there to help diagnose it?  You might also check if a BIOS firmware upgrade is available also.

when i turn the power switch on the lights come on on the motherboard. the computer will start, harddisk runs and fans are spinning. i dont have a speaker for beep noises. screen is just blank, no signal. tried setting the graphics card in another computer where it runs fine. tried 2 different harddisks, tried powering up without harddisks, tried reseating components and removing ram sticks to check. nothing works. i can afford a new mobo or cpu, but how do i know which of them is faulty? i suspect the motherboard. also tried setting the graphics card in another slot, no luck. normally on my other computer when i turn it on, the graphic card fan will run hard for a few secs then settle once entering bios or post or what it is u call it, when setting it in the bad computer it just runs hard until i shut it off again. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.
