Q: Solved: Word will save but not not open in Microsoft Outlook

When I receive an email with a word attachment in Microsoft Outlook it gives me a warning that there may be a virus and I need to save the attachment to my computer before I can open the file. Is there a setting I can change so that it will open in Word much like other attachments open in their respective programs. I am using Outlook 2007 and Windows XP. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

On Microsoft Word 2010, when you go to either the Open or Save as dialog boxes, you see a folder tree called "Microsoft Word", under which in my computer has Templates. In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

I have Microsoft Office 2003 installed and also the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack 2007. However, when I receive an e-mail with a Microsoft Word 2007 attachment, the document will not open even with the Compatibility Pack installed. I can not convert .docx to .doc. Any advice please?

I use MS Outlook. I always have it open, the process uses about 18MB to 20MB of RAM when idle. That's no problem. The problem is Microsoft Word. It is alway open with Outlook. Word uses about 40MB to 50MB of RAM when idle. Just sitting, I'm already down 58MB to 70MB of RAM. Is there anything that can be done about that? I'm in no way short of memory (1280MB installed), but I haven't noticed it on other machines I've worked on.

Any thoughts?

Installed Microsoft office 2003 Installed custom install of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Publisher. They all work you can type in them and print the page ect. However all of them if you go to save the file such as a word doc to the desktop like always did type whatever and then go to file and save as have the file named etc and with all of them it comes up with an error sayin

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. YOu can save a file from any of them, like I said you can open them and do whatever you want and print them out but cannot save them. Can someone tell me why I am gettting the error and why it wion't save?

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I'm having problems with Microsoft word and I really need it fixed.
Here's my problem:
I click on Microsoft word... it says "Windows installers - Preparing to install..."
Then it says: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

I may have deleted something in the Add/Remove list... but I don't remember what it was.
Any help would be appreciated

My father is going to buy a new computer and doesn't know how to back up his e-mails in Microsoft Outlook 2007 to a USB drive or external medium so he can transfer them to the new computer afterwards. I myself use Thunderbird, and I don't want to fumble around with Outlook on his computer and end up deleting something by mistake.
So how are e-mails in Microsoft Outlook 2007 saved to a medium (whether internal or external)?

You got it save it as a Word Document in Open Office. If you opened it and then resaved it in Open Office it may have saved it as an Open Office file type instead of a Microsoft Word File Type. I know there is a way to make Open Office to default to saving as a Word Document. Just look thru the settings. So your first step to investigate is too see what file type OpenOffice is saving as by default.

For some reason my Microsoft WORD isn't opening up.. When I click the icon the programs starts to open (by that I mean the 4"x4" square logo shows up) and then it stops there before opening up the whole page. Then It freezes up and I am unable to do anything else. I went to my documents and clicked a document there and the same thing happened. This is what I've done so far:
1. I did system restore and nothing was fixed.
2. I deleted WORD and Works and then reinstalled them. Still, nothing was fixed.
3. I deleted all "normal.dot" hidden files (I read about sweets problem with WORD and tried that). After trying that, WORD opened, but I was unable to open a document because it said at the bottom of the page "requesting virus scan". It goes no further than that.

I think the problem started after I downloaded a calendar template from the last Windows Office update newsletter.

when i try to open microsoft word the computer freezes. i found out about using wordpad instead, which is fine, and using wordpad does not make the computer freeze. i click on start, then on run, then type in wordpad. but someone recently sent me a microsoft word document as an attachment, and when i tried to open the attachment the computer froze again. so i sent that email to a friend who opened the attachment, then copied and pasted the contents in an email back to me.

is there a way i can access microsoft word documents without bothering my friend (in terms of copying and pasting in an email?).

what other information do you need in order to help me with this problem? i have windows 98. a friend uninstalled then reinstalled microsoft word, but it did not help.

Office 2010.

Outlook rule moves emails upon receipt from specified senders to an Outlook folder.
Outlook rule then runs a script that saves Excel attachments a directory on the PC, applying filename and filetype.
What I'd like to do is open the Excel file in the background and run some code on it before it is saved to the PC directory.
The code is just some simple clearing of formatting on each sheet:

I have added the MS Excel 14.0 Object Libray to Outlook.

I've just found that the attachments we received can be in csv, xls or xlsx format, and all need to be saved as xls.
In testing a heavily formatted xlsx doc as an xls file, I find the resultant file is all full of horrible. Seems this is due to the compatibility between Excel 2010 and Excel 97-2000 (simply copying the data from the xlsx to an xls file produces the old Minor Loss of Fidelity window). I had wondered whether an alternative way to do it would be to open the attachment, copy the data and paste into an xls document (all using code). But it seems this would actually be more hassle.

If I (manually) clear formats from all worksheets in a workbook and save it as xls, I then can open the file (in compatibility mode) with no loss of fidelity warnings, and obviously no incomprehensible formatting characters.

This doesn't change anything from my original request, it just highlights the need to run Excel code prior to Saving As xls.

Hello, I have Windows XP purchased in 2005, and came with Microsoft Office.

I was using Microsoft word early this morning and something happened and now it won't open.

Of all my desktop icons, everything has color except the Microsoft is WHITE, which I suspected right away had been compromised.

I keep getting error messages when trying to open files created in Word 2003. The files burn to cd without a problem but when I try to open them off of the cd I get the file may be corrupt try to use recover text option or open and repair option. The odd thing is these word 2003 files open in Office xp without any issues. I have also got an error stating I do not have adminstrative rights on my cd drive. The cd drive is not a network shared drive so I am confused by this error. I have replaced the old cd-r/rw drive with a dvd r/rw and still get the same problems. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

I have a user who has been using Word 2010 for a couple of weeks with no issues until this morning where she is no longer able to open word documents using either File-Open, Open on the quick access toolbar or CTRL O.

At present if you go to the file tab and select open - it goes back to the home tab but does not display the open file dialog box.

You can select an item from the recent file list and this will open, you can select a file in windows explorer and double click and it will open so the association is OK. But I cannot get the open dialog to appear in word.

Excel and other office programs are working fine it is only Word.

The user is using Windows 7, Microsoft office 2010 standard.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Office software but the problem has persisted.

I have been unable to 'google' my way through this one, so hopefully someone here can suggest a solution.

Hi I am unable to open links in Microsoft outlook 2007 emails, this problem started after I recently uninstalled firefox from my laptop as I decieded having tried it I prefer explorer. I get an error message 'This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. contact your system adminitrator' I am the administrator. I have looked on your other firums and did find one question simular but could make the solution work as I didn't seem to have an email tab under tool/ programs option in explorer. Outlook died when starting up.
Tried to do a repair install and it died "Missing File"
Tried to do a re-install and it died with a "Send to MS"
Uninstalled Outlook - OK
Installed Outlook - OK

Outlook would start to open then error:

Cannot start Office Outlook. Unable to open Outlook Windows. The set of folders could not be opened.

Tried removing the *.pst files to fource a new user setup.
Outlook complained that it couldn't open the *.pst and opened an Open File windows.

Tried using OUTLOOK /cleanpst /firstrun and OUTLOOK /safe with same results.

What to try next?

Depending on the version, you should have some save options.
In Word 03 it's at Tools>Options>Save Tab.
Deselect "allways create backup copy" and "allow background saves" to eliminate it completely.

Do you mean on a network that a word opens in read view versus print view? If so in word go Tools>Options>uncheck "Allow starting in reading..."(see attached). Hope that's what you meant.

When I click save as in the file menu or even just click save for the first time in a new document nothing happens. No save as box, no error messages, nothing. However if I close the program I get the do you wish to save changes box and then the save as window opens. Is there anyway I can get it to just save normally. As i'm sure you can imagine its a real pain to have to quit word whenever I want to save something, not to mention the fact that i'm taking a crap shoot as to wether it will actually save my document or force me to lose everything.

Says I can't open document because 'word has insufficient memory' -- I'm assuming this is related to the 62% resources free on bootup...should be 80 if i remember (this is win98) -- any ideas other than that as to why it won't save/open?

and if you agree its the resources problem - how to fix? This is my cousin's old machine...IBM Aptiva...i think it's a duron, only 64mb dedicated system memory...88 included onboard vram.

I got system resources free up to 88% but it still won't open documents. If I open a document straight from my documents, it will open. But the 'open' command won't work in Word. I can't use the 'save' or 'save as' command.

I can open recent files though in the 'file' menu. Any ideas? Seems really weird.

Also, appears to be true in all Microsoft applications, not just Word.

I have a problem here. I can open microsoft word, excel, etc. with no problem, however, when I try to open a previous document or save-as (through file-open) it will crash when I select a different folder in the open box.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office and getting all of the updates and I still have the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot work until this is fixed!!!

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer. 
I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.
I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC.  However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).
I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... I'm a former IT Systems Technician, and my girlfriend is a work-from-home writer. I've recently migrated her PC's original processor and ram from an HP motherboard to an ASRock board, linking the original WD Caviar Blue 1TB drive to the board as a secondary drive to collect documents and storage from, while running Windows 8.1 (up to date) on a Seagate Barracuda 250GB for the main OS and programs drive.

With those specs out there in the open, now it's time to get to the root of the problem.

As a work-from-home writer, my girlfriend depends on the ability to save her documents to Microsoft's OneDrive and upload them to her publisher, but with this error showing up, she cannot get them to save. I have never seen such a message in my many years of IT service, and I'm completely baffled.

I am the administrator... So now I turn to you guys for help.

not a biggy just a bit baffled... the flatmates computer had outlook xp on it.. but it doesnt seem to hold the password for the recieve function. no matter what we do, itll throw another password request in. Once the password is in its fine, but its just a bit of an annoyance that we cant save it. Hes running XP home on a HP pavilion (yuck machine man)

Im assuming its something like registry, does anyone have a link to a website that solves this problem? ive spent tireless hours trying to find one for xp to no avail.. or even a simple solution?

For some reason, when I click on on Microsoft Works, I get a quick flash of it trying to open & then NOTHING!!
I have sooo many important saved documents that I really need to be able to open again...
I have gotten rid of Microsoft Money & maybe Microsoft Office as well but not sure...

Formerly using an older version of outlook I did not have this issue. This started when I upgraded to 2013.

I have some form letters prewritten and saved as Word docs in a folder on my desktop. When I want to email one of these word documents to someone I start a new email and attach the document.

The document starts with "Hello, ". I used to be able to attach a document like this, open it, and add a name, such as "Hello Joe,". I'd then simply click save and close the Word doc. The change would be there and I can email the attachment. Now in 2013 outlook, when you make the change to the name and hit save, it wants me to save the document to a location on my computer (my docs, desktop, etc.) rather than to the attachment.

It is a pain to first have to open the word doc, change the name and save it, and then attach it to the email after the fact.

Is there a way to enable saving the changes in a word doc after it is attached? I can still make changes to an Excel sheet and save the attachment like I used to; I just cannot do this with a Word doc.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

None of the microsoft office applications (word, excel, powerpoint) will open a document from within the application. The application itself opens fine, everything seems to run fine and then when I go to save it freezes up completely. If I try to open a document from within the application it freezes immediatly also.

This morning I ran the Windows automatic updates and unistalled Corel Paintshop pro 7, Corel Photoshop and a couple old card games. I don't know though if the problem occured before or after these things.

My local computer guy told me to run the "Detect and Repair" feature in Word and it said everything was ok, but I'm still having the problem.

Hi guys,

I have a question that has stumped me so far. Here is the scenario: I am dealing with a spreadsheet that has several tabs on it. In each tab, there are several word, powerpoint, and pdf documents that are embedded as objects. My task is to write a macro, that will for each document (keep in mind its an embedded object that needs to be opened), open it with the appropriate program, and save it using a pre-assigned name (the name of the column heading and the row it is in) to a predetermined folder path. This process needs to be duplicated about 200 times. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I know enough about vba to believe that it is. I've been working on it since yesterday, and I can't seem to tie the pieces together. Can anyone help on this?

Hello. I recently switched to Word 2013. It's taking some getting used to.
In prior versions of Word when I would "save as" or "open" I would get a folder list. If it were the first time since I had opened the program it would be my default setting: in my case, "My Documents." If I had opened a document and tried to "save as" it would show the most recent folder I had opened.
In Word 2013 instead of a folder list I get a list of recent documents. I also get a choice of Recent Documents, One Drive, Computer and Add a Place. This requires that I go through extra clicks to get to the proper folder. Is there a way to switch to a folder view?
By the way, what is this One Drive business?
Do I need to Add a Place each time I open a folder?

A:Word 2013 Issues: Open File; Save As; One Drive, etc.

You can select a default folder to save to, or set the default to Computer, and then navigate to the folder you want to save to -- File>Options>Save, check Save to Computer by default. You can select your default folder here as well.
When Saving As, you should be seeing a list of recent folders you've saved to, to the right of the OneDrive and Computer options.
If you have an outlook.com, live.com or hotmail.com email address, you can download the OneDrive application to your desktop and use it to save and sync files and folders to storage in the cloud. If you don't have email accounts with any of those, you can ignore the OneDrive option.

Well the subject line pretty much says it all.

Microsoft Outlook just suddenly stopped saving all my sent emails. And yet the option to have the emails saved is checkmarked.

I'm kinda at a loss as to what to do next

Your SENT ITEMS folder probably has a size limit set on it. Try moving or deleting some of the existing items in the SENT ITEMS folder to another folder and see if the problem persists. How many emails are in the folder presently?

If that doesn't work you may want to try re-creating your Outlook profile.

First time here as I'm usually about to fix my own computer issues.

Since my son got in somewhere on one of my computers, whenever I open Microsoft Outlook or Word, the "save as" dialog box appears wanting for me to save whatever at random. In Outlook especially, if I open it and receive an email, it'll wish for me to save the title of whatever it is as "whatever".htm. I'll continually cancel to not save anything, try to save what it wants me to, etc BUT it will continue to pop up. The same happens in word where I'm rendered helpless as it wishes for me to "save as" "Doc1" all the time. I'm not able to do anything else and neither program will close unless I open up task manager to "end task".

This has been going on for a week now and have had to manage my email on my ISP's webmail website. I've done virus scans - norton (even disabled it as I know it's a FUN program), performed office updates, clicked on the HELP - detect and repair but no avail. I'm thinking that my next step will be is to uninstall and reinstall after exporting my mail folders.

What do you think it could be?

Have you tried a different keyboard on your machine?
