Map network drive to virtual machine running in the host machine

Q: Map network drive to virtual machine running in the host machine

I am trying to map a network drive to a remote server. The server is not on the same network as the computer I am trying to map the drive on.

I have the external IP address, the port number, and the drive letter on the server. I have entered http:// IP Address:Port Number/drive letter. I get an error message stating that the drive path is incorrect.

I am using the network drive mapping wizard in the Computer screen.

The remote server is part of a local network with 3 other computers running in the VMware workstation connected by NAT connection .I run this server port number 9000 of host machine by Port forwarding method.

I need help with the proper syntax for mapping the drive to the remote server. I can't get my Windows 10 machine to connect to the server. I need to get shared folder of virtual machine in another computer.

How do I map a drive to my remote server? Please be specific as I am not that familiar with networking.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running a server in vmware workstation which is connected with NAT connection. I made port forwarding for access this virtual machine from outside the host computer. That is when type host computer ip:9000 in chrome it redirects to server web interface
which is running in vmware workstation because I redirect port 8080 in virtual machine to port 9000 in host machine.

Now I want to get all shared folders in the virtual machine . when I typed host ip in run dialog box it gives only the host machine shared folders . when i typed host ip along with port number it shows error.

What should I do for getting all shared folders of virtual machine in other computer in same network.

Note:Should not use bridge network connection.

Whether it is possible?.

Thank you for your help in Advance.

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

I have an old program that will run on XP but not Win 7 Pro and I am using Windows Virtual PC on my laptop to run it. It works fine but I cannot access files (share drives) from the main hard drive, i.e., the Win 7 file structure. I can work with the VM XP file structure but not the main files. I am able to access flash drives from the VM and so I can move the files around this way but it is very cumbersome. This machine is not on any sort of network. I have done the same thing on my desktop and have exactly the same problem (it operates on Win 7 Pro as well). Security is not a concern; I am the only user of these machines.

I have read what I can find about this and tried resetting all kinds of "sharing" permissions, including sharing just a folder instead of the entire drive, enabling sharing from both the Win 7 side and the VM XP side, etc. I've tried everything I can but to no avail.

Can anyone offer some ideas and/or direct me to a thorough discussion of this issue? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
I've just installed a virtual machine (running XP Pro) onto my Vista machine. The Vista machine has a USB external hard drive attached. When trying to access the data on this hard drive from within the virtual machine (via the bridged network link between the virtual machine and the host) it is incredibly slow. I've tried moving the USB hard drive to another PC on the network (running XP Pro) and accessing it from the XP Pro virtual machine on the first PC, and this works fine. I have perforce upgraded to W10 from W7. The routine stuff is fine - after a bit of digging around. However I have two applications I can no longer run.
Locoscript (DOS) which has an extensive English-Russian database built up over decades
Photoshop Elements (XP) - I'm accustomed to it and would like to continue with it.
I was running both under Virtual Machine on W7. I have backups of the
VSV and VMC and VHD files.
Can you suggest how I can set up for these programs?

I also have a system backup of the 7 system.

Possibilities are in order of strong preference -
- a virtual PC under W10 (where from ?)
- a W7 boot on my W10 machine, just to run the Virtual PC for these two environments;
- for the DOs unpack the VSV data and possible DOSBOX to run the program
- Get a separate box and try to reinstall W7 on it from my system backup
= other

In each case I not sure where to start. Is it possible? Any suggestions?
Please !

Hi there,

For beginners I recommend VMware Player:
VMware Player: Run Windows 8, Chrome OS on a Virtual PC
It's free.

You can also find it on filehippo for example.
The install process is easy to follow and the VM's work nicely.

There are other visualization products out there but this on is best to get started with.

Here's a strange issue--at least I think it's strange. I have an old application that I've had since I had Win XP. I'm not sure but I think I had it even on Win 98. Even though it's an old app I was able to install and run in on Vista and Windows 7. I now have the pre-release Win 8 installed on VMware Player and I was wondering if it would run in Win 8. So I opened Win 8 and put in the CD, clicked on the setup.exe file and it installed--or so it seemed. It always installed a short cut on my desk top before. So I looked and didn't see it. It was supposed to have installed in a particular folder, but I couldn't find it. I then installed it again and chose to put a short cut on the desk top. But, it wasn't there. The bottom line is that even though I had Win 8 open in the guest, I discovered that it actually instaledl on Win 7--on the host machine even though I installed it while the guest machine was open. Has anyone seen anything like that before? I suppose it happened because it was such an old app.

A:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

A:Running windows 8 as virtual machine in win7

You cannot run a virtual machine with only 3GB of RAM. Windows 7 needs 2GB to run. You will then only have 1GB for running Windows 8, which is not enough. You should have at least 8GB of RAM and a quad core CPU to run virtual machines. Also, since you have only a dual core CPU, 1 core will be needed for Win8, and another for Win7. this will make both OS's run very slow.

Hello everyone,

Young student working on my master's thesis, I have to run a few programs only available on linux.

As seen on almost all the sources I visited, I installed VirtualBox and downloaded the last Ubuntu "iso" file. after having installed the new OS on virtualbox, I tried launching it and got the very often found "VT-x is disabled in the BIOS" error.

The solution also given in all the sources I visited is "enable Hyper-V" in the "windows features turn on or off" menu. Problem is : I can't find this option (I even looked in the least probable sub directories, just in case)

I found out this feature was only available for "Pro" versions of windows 8/8.1.

My question is : Is it feasible for me to run a virtual machine, or even run a machine on dual boot on my default-installed-windows 8 machine? I don't have the money to buy the pro package (which, for some reason, is MUCH more expensive than the "previous windows to 8.1 pro" update).

and If yes : how?

Best regards and thank you for reading,

A:MS Virtual Machine can NOT see network

Hi

In virtual PC go to Edit -> Settings -> Networking
Make sure that the network card that is installed in your XP Pro 64bit is selected under Adapter1.

Then make sure your (XP Pro32bit) virtual pc's computer name is different to the XP Pro64bit computer name.

Setup TCP/IP in the Local Area Connection in the virtual PC. The IP address of the PC and the Virtual PC must be in the same range. The gateway and the DNS must be the same (This is if you use static IP addresses for your LAN)

Hi rino009.

Before we suggest any troubleshooting steps, upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

I have an XP virtual machine running on a 64-bit Win 7 host. I have a home wireless network that I need to access from the XP VM in order to use printers attached to the other computers on the network. All comupters currently on the network have the same workgroup name.

I have networking on the VM set to use the wireless adapter on the host laptop. With this configuration I can see and access the host, but I cannot see nor access any other computers on the network.

Now, it seems to me that I will need to run the XP Network Wizard to set up the network on the VM before I am able to see the network, but after reading dozens of articles and posts on networking a VM, I have never seen this step mentioned. (I am at work now, so I can't test this out on my network until later.)

So, my questions are: (1) Do I need to run the XP Network wizard to get the VM to join the wireless network, and (2) if I don't need to run the wizard, what DO I need to do to get this to work?

Thanks in advance. This forum is a great resource.

Well, it depends on which OS you have. If it's Vista or XP, then you may want to change the graphics settings so they're lower, because they consume memory.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

Thanks
John

Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print. Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up. I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it. Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. for the user, the mapping happens to both the Win 7 PC and the XP mode PC.  The mapping on the Win 7 PC works fine.  On the XP mode PC, the mapped drive shows disconnected but the mapping still shows and when opened displays the contents of
the shared drive. I cannot remove the mapping but attempting to with a NET USE /delete command produces: the network connection cannot be found.  Ultimately, I want to connect to the mapping so I can configure a FoxPro ODBC driver within the XP virtual
machine.  As things stand right now, I cannot set up the ODBC driver since it will not recognise the mapping.  All the latest patches are installed on both the Win 7 and XP mode PC, including Win 7 SP1.  I have tried several things that have
been mentioned about this in the forums but so far to no avail.William Fearn

A:Win 7 XP virtual machine has a mapped drive that shows disconnected but still acts connected

To answer one of your points the mapped drive on the Windows XP mode PC does show up under the Network Drive category and uses the drive letter S:. It is a legitimate drive mapping.  Something else is going on. I have done some further research
and have found the following cause. The mapped drive itself does not cause the problem.   The problem occurs when I create a shortcut to an executable in the mapped network drive on the Windows XP mode PC and then put the shortcut into the All
Users/Start Menu folder and then reboot the XP mode PC. Then the disconnected network drive message appears.  The creation of the shortcut is not the problem but putting it in the All Users\Start Menu does. When I remove the shortcut from the All Users\Start
Menu folder and reboot, the problem goes away.  I need to get the shortcut published to the Win 7 PC so that it shows up in the Windows XP Mode Applications folder.
The method I described is the only way I know how to get the application published.  I also know that Microsoft has described this method of publishing an application that does not use an installation program as being the preferred method to publish
such applications from the XP mode PC to the host Win 7 PC.
I hope this clarify's the problem for you.  I have seen other instances of similar problems but haven't seen a good solution yet.

My wired mouse randomly stops working while using a virtual machine in a thumb drive. It doesn't  happen everyday only once a week or so sometimes less.

I have to reboot my pc back into the thumb drive to get it to work again. I am not able to swap it out for a different mouse while in the VM.

I have changed out the mouse 4 times with different brands mainly for Logitech brand and tried all the other USB ports and still have the same problem.

It happened in Windows 7 and Windows 10 while using the VM thumb drive and has been going on for a couple of years now.
It works fine when using my personal desktop.

Any idea what could be causing this? Are all the USB ports connected together or do they run separate from one another?

I hope you can resolve my issue.

Thanks

Hello,

I have a friend who is doing stuff in Adobe AE, Sony Vegas etc. he can do awesome stuff, but he has a terribly slow PC. My PC runs with 4790K and GTX970 and it's basically on all the time. My internet connection is really fast, so I was thinking about running another windows inside of my host windows 10 OS. Just like virtualization in vbox, but with full isolation and native code support so it would use my PC resources to the full extent. I've seen some implementations of it, but they either lack full isolation from the host OS or are not running code natively. Any ideas what's out there that would fit my needs?

Thank you!

I tried installing a Network card in Windows Nt ver 4.0 build 1381 service pack 3.

I couldn't get it talking to windows 98 and the machine started running really slowly.

I took the network card out (a fast ethernet 10/100m) card and it still runs really slowly (eg. If I open a folder the folder opens instantly but the egg timer stays on for what seems like a couple of minutes). How can I get my machine running at normal speed again?

Note: It's a Pentium 400 with Raid (for video).

I may have changed settings in the services, devices and network (but I've removed the networking option for now).

A:Machine running really slowly after installing Network card

I guess you have turned the machine off several times which won't let you go back and use the "last know good load" at the time of start up. If you simply installed the nic card and installed the drivers for the card I really can't understand what would cause you to slow down like you describe. Service pack 3 is the rock solid one for NT.

Perhaps I can help you with your network problem though, Do you have the network protocols loaded in the machines? For just 2or 3 machines its easiest to use Microsoft protocol Netbeui, it is the fastest and easiest protocol for small networks of 2 to 20 machines. both NT and 98 support it and the machines should see each other almost immed. Good luck on your other problems, NT can be a bear to work with, thats why I changed over to Win2000, much easier to work with.

Hi,

Hope you all doing good !!

Am trying to connect my vm machine on a host server from another machine in the same network, however its not successful. Below are the details:

Host machine- win 7

IPv4: 192.168.11.120
gateway- 192.168.11.1

VM machine- win 2008 server r2

IPv4: 192.168.22.140
gateway- 192.168.22.2
DHCP- disable
DNS server- 192.168.22.2

RDC enable from firewall
static IP as in IPv4
user with Admin rights created

Tried in both the below settings.
VM settings in Bridge
VM settings in NAT- host-9997, ip:192.168.22.140 vm port: tried both 22 and 3389

I can connect the host machine from another computer in the same network. Also I can connect the VM from host via RDC in the same machine, but not able to connect the VM from another computer in the same network.

Please let me know where is exact issue is and what am missing.

Thank you in advance.

3 machines involved.
Windows 7 64-bit w/2 hard drives (Machine A)
Windows 7 32-bit notebook (Machine B)
Windows XP, SP3 w/2 hard drives (Machine C)

All machines can access each other's C drive.
Both Win7 machines (A & B) can access 2nd drive on XP machine (C).
Neither B or C can access 2nd drive on Win7 machine (A).
Message: ...drive is not accessable. You may not have permission to use the network resource.
Followed a similar thread and checked all permissions locations.
All permissions show shared in every way possible.
Had no success setting up Homegroup to do it, so removed it.

A:Can't access 2nd drive over network on Win7 machine

Welcome to SF,

Please try accessing the shared drive this way:

Click on Start and type \\ComputerName\shareddrive
or \\IPAddress\shareddrive

Also, any Firewall or Security Software installed from those machines?

Can someone explain the difference between these 3 programs?

A:Remote desktop, Virtual Machine and Virtual Box

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). There's a nice little article on Microsoft website about, I suggest you to give it a read. If there's something you don't understand in it, let me know and I'll explain it to you.Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionA Virtual Machine is like the state name, a machine that doesn't exist physically, it only exists virtually inside a system. It's the emulation of a system inside another system. So you could for example have Windows 8.1 installed on your computer, but using a program, create a virtual machine running Windows XP in it. To put it simply, it's running an independant system (guest) inside a system (host). For more information, you can consult the Wikipedia article below.Virtual machineVirtualBox is a program developped and maintenant by Oracle that allows you to create virtual machines. It's what we call an "hypervisor". A program that allows you to create and manage virtual machines. For more information, you can consult their website and their Wikipedia article.VirtualBoxVirtualBox WikiSo to sum it up, you can use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine (or multiple VMs), and you use the "Remote Desktop" to connect remotely to another computer and access it. ... I've got a few machines on Virtual PC, copies of one base installed template, all running XP Pro.

I moved one of these virtual machines to another box, and now that virtual machine cannot talk to any other virtual machine on the original box, or the original host itself.

Any ideas why this is?

i am using a windows 7 home premium 64 bit , hw do i download and use a virtual machine ??, can i run a 16 bit programme on it ?? if so any recommendation on whr i should get it??

thank you. and merry christmas every1 ...

A:virtual machine

You'd need to get yourself some virtualization software.
I use VirtualBox, but there are others available if you prefer.

You also need the installation disks for an Operating System, and a license to install them as though on a regular machine.

If the Operating System you install is 32 bit it will be able to run 16 bit software.
If the Operating System you install is 64 bit it won't be able to, just as your physical host OS cannot run such software.
If you install another family of OS onto the VM, such as Linux, you'll be able to run Linux software from within the Virtual machine but not Windows software.

Any more questions feel free to ask.
And Merry Christmas to you too.

a friend of mine has a windows 8 laptop but needs windws 7 for some work stuff,if i install windows 7 on a virtual machine on his windows 8 laptop will it work ok

A:virtual machine

Yes, it will, but you would need a decent amount of memory for it to work well. How much RAM does the laptop have? Also, has your friend tried changing the compatibility settings for the program and set it to Windows 7 to see if it works?
