Printer driver not available in Windows Update

Q: Printer driver not available in Windows Update

I posted elsewhere earlier that when I tried to install an OKI C511 printer in Win 7 Home Premium (32 bit) it could not find a driver in Windows Update. This is puzzling since I had installed the same printer on another Win7 computer and the driver was found in update.

I've now gone into OKI's website and followed their advice about installing a plug and play printer; when I tried the first part of installing the same printer on another Win7 computer to the point where I select OKI from the list of manufacturers, it does list the C511 as one available through Windows 7. (I did not proceed beyond that as I did not want to complete the installation on that computer).

So why did not the Win 7 on which I was trying to install this printer not pick it up? And, I am never offered any Optional Updates on that computer either (although I have the "Give me recommended updates..." box checked).

I would really welcome any suggestions about these problems.

Regards

John

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am having issues with both. I have a windows 7 64 bit preinstalled. The windows update is behaving oddly. When you hit the ?Check for updates? it looks for them, then doesn?t find them most of the time, say the firewall maybe blocking it. What is odd at the same time, the windows update icon by the clock, shows it downloading updates. Just in case it is Windows firewall, how do I allow windows update through the windows firewall. Step by step instruction, I am not familiar with the newer windows firewall. I need to know the name of Windows Update executable, so I can add it to the firewall exception list.

Like I said above I have a 64 bit machine that maybe the problem. Hp claims W7 will install the default OS driver. No luck. I don?t know if the other suggestion about downloading updated driver list from windows 7 worked or not due to my issue with Windows Update.

Yes, I am still on a dial-up, so I can?t download windows 8.1 full install plus I don?t know if that will fix the issue anyway.
Thank You in advance.

A:Windows Update & Printer Driver.

hi groze. welcome to the forums.

what anti-virus are you using if any?

you also mention that you are on dialup? so are you allowing enough time for windows to download the necessary updates?

i wouldn't beleive that the standard firewall with win7 would block win7 updates?

also can i ask if you are using a original copy of win7?

Hi all,

I'm installing a network printer onto windows 7, the printer is hosted from a windows xp machine.

Windows 7 detect's the printer, and then says that its looking for drivers on windows update, this might take a while. However I never see an option to browse for the drivers myself.

I've tried running the exe to install windows 7 drivers for the Canon Pixma i4500 but it says the printer is not detected, well of course it isn't its a network printer.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

A:Add Network printer only looks at windows update for driver

Hello,

You need to install the windows 7 drivers onto the Windows XP machine as additional drivers.

See:
Microsoft Corporation

Also, you need to make sure that the printer is shared so that the Windows 7 machine can see it. You can then add the printer via the Add Printer Wizard or browse to it and double click the printer (\\XPMACHINENAME).

The latest Windows 10 update apparently killed off the driver for my HP OfficeJet J4540 printer. When I tried to print the document, nothing showed on the window except the FAX and PDF programs which I never use.

When I went to the control panel and clicked on the printer icon, the line underneath said that the driver was unavailable. That's strange, since the printer is only four years old and it was "available" before the upgrade.

So what's up with that? Even the Driver Support program can't seem to help.

I'm trying to add a Canon imageCLASS MF7470 printer to my laptop. When I plug it into the USB, Windows 7 detects it, but as unspecified. It says no driver is installed. When I do a Windows update it comes up with other imageCLASS models but not the one I have. I've tried going thru these threads to locate my options but nothing works. When I go to add printer, properties is as far as I can go cause the only tabs I get there are general and hardware. This is a work printer for a jobsite, so of course the disk has been lost at some point, but I need this running ASAP.

A:Add a Canon printer with no driver and Windows update doesn't work

Here is the driver page for Canon, just specify your OS, download drivers, install and go at it could be that MS just doesn't provide them. However Canon does for both 32 and 64 bit.

Can a Firmware Update and/or drivers on printers be reversed?I am new to BleepingComputer, so I do not know which Forum to post this to, as this issue involves multiple forums: Hardware (HP Printers), Software (Firmware & Drivers), Operating Systems running Windows 2000 and Windows XP.At my workplace, we have many HP Printers on the network. HP sent me a link promoting HP Easy Printer Care. I figured I would try it (big mistake) because I take care of all of the printers in our building. So this Easy Printer Care tells me that there is updated Firmware for my printers. So I get the firmware and install it. Of course, HP didn?t really explain how to install it. I had to look it up to actually do the install. After installing it, HP tells me that the Firmware Updates still need to be updated!?!Now the end users are having problems when they print. Multiple users are having the same and or different problems. The problem that has the most reports to me are: When someone is printing a document and they want to change it from portrait to landscape, they click on properties and receive an error message that reads:Function address 0x2e2a5aa caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc0000005) Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed. Click OK.Then another windows pops up saying: Operation could not be completed. A:Can A Printer Firmware Update And/or Driver Update Be Reversed?

You can go to Device Manager and find the printer and in properties it gives you the option to "roll back" the driver to a previous version. A firmware update and driver update mean 2 different things, to me anyways. My understanding is a firmware update offers "improved" instructions to the onboard chip of the device. What does HP say about the problem?

Yesterday I was notified by HP Support Assistant that there was an "important" new printer driver update for my HP printer. I installed it and immediately the following issue started: The display on my laptop screen is out of position - it is shifted about an inch to the left and down, so there is an inch-wide black bar down the right side of the screen, and the start button and task bar are off the bottom of the screen.

I've tried everything I can find ... display settings, screen resolution, graphics card settings, etc. I restored to a system restore point created just before the software update, but it didn't solve the issue. I contacted HP support by phone, but as the PC and printer are both out of warranty, they were unable to help without a charge. They helped me uninstall and reinstall the printer driver, but it did not solve the issue.

Meanwhile, I've set the screen resolution to a lower setting and moved the task bar to the left so I can see the entire screen image, even if it is not using the full screen.

The computer is an HP Pavilion dv6-2150us laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with SP1. The printer is an HP Officejet Pro 8500a.

Any suggestions?

I have a new Lenovo Windows 7 PC. I have a Brother MFC-9440CN printer directly attached to it via USB. Per instructions, I did NOT install any Brother software on the new PC. I just connected it via USB and the PC automatically installed the drivers, etc. Printing from that PC to the locally attached printer works like a champ. I have set up this printer via a network share (called BrotherMFC) so I can use this printer from other PCs.

I have a Dell desktop Windows XP PC (that used to be the computer that had this printer locally attached) and a Dell laptop with Windows Vista that I want to access this printer via the network. On each of these PCs, I have gone through the "Add a Printer" wizard and I selected network (vs. local) printer and find the printer share. However when I select the printer share and click OK, it appears to try and install software or something and says the printer driver on the printer server is incorrect. How can this driver be "incorrect" when it is the driver the new PC used to install? Is there a "special" driver the system needs to act as a printer server properly? Or is there any known compatibility issues of printing via a network share form Windows XP and Vista PCs to Windows 7?

I know the most optimum solution is to get a wireless print server, but this solution of using a network/printer share over the network has worked great and saves me having to spend $80/$100 on a wireless print server.

I downloaded Win7 x86 drivers for our Ricoh Aficio MP 171 from Ricoh, to load them onto a machine freshly updated from XP to Win 7. Every time i try to install them, Windows tells me the default driver it chose is the best one and won't install it. The driver it is using does squat, the printer was working fine when it was connected to XP, now the most we have gotten out of it is a few pages of jibberish when we tried to print a photo.

I have tried manually installing the driver from the device manager, i tell it to use a folder on the desktop where i copied the driver, but when i press next it immediately says the driver being used is up to date. I tried telling it to read from a dvd i burned the driver folder on to, it doesn't like that either.

I am toying with the idea of deleting the default driver from system32 (but copying it first to a data key), disconnecting from the 'net, and then installing the one from Ricoh.

Hi, and thanks in advance...

Much of this is a repeat to other threads, until the graphic driver problem at the end...

(I also have an Ubuntu partition.)

I'd left my mp3 player plugged in overnight + an Asus Xonar DAC in a usb hub, when Windows wanted to do an update and conflict over drivers ensued. Strange, because I've selected for notification before updating. Also, have not been successful installing any new updates since the end of May. Was seemingly a common problem, I checked into it, too busy/lazy to pursue and succeed. This part is confusing...?

Woke up to blasting fans and unplugged everything peripheral. First, tried setting back to restore points prior to that night - twice. Could restart in Safe Mode and with networking. Then, could restart normally - but, shutdowns after 20 minutes or so.

Got crash logs, saw driver conflicts (not found) - saved.

Came here, read threads, did restart at Last Known Good Configuration. Restart - Nvidia Geforce driver not found. Went to Asus site, downloaded and installed driver (not lastest version, but last approved version and not much later than one that was installed).

It then went into a system cycled start/restart/etc. attempting to find driver, fix itself - forced to do shutdown to stop it.

Restarted this morning in Safe Mode, followed your instructions for posting. It's been running in safe mode for about 20 minutes now.

Hi,
I'm a little confused by one of my update options. I was under the impression that windows 7 was using wddm 1.1, and that the wddm 1.0 drivers have been available for quite some time. I checked and the driver I have is wddm 1.0, released 10/28/2008, version number 8.15.10.1590. So why am I being given the option to update to 'pre-release wddm 1.0'? I tried to get more information to check the version number, but I am just redirected to Winqual Help , which doesn't help me any.

I'd like to test out the wddm 1.1 drivers, and I've read that they're available for 7, but I don't think that these are those drivers, unless there is a typo in the driver title.

yes thats right....

wddm is just a driver model...
its up to the manufacture (here intel) to release wddm 1.1 driver
so until then (most likely they wont) they have to release a wddm 1.1

Windows Display Driver Model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
that should be a good read....

what they mean pre-release means that these drivers are beta drivers (there is a difference between pre-release drivers and pre-release wddm 1.1 drivers)

Recently Windows updated my Intel HD Graphics 630 driver. A few days later the same driver was released on Dell's driver support page.
Is there any correlation between Windows Update and Dell's drivers? Who does update the drivers Microsoft themselves or Dell needs to release the driver to Microsoft?
As this is the first time when Windows updated the driver is this how the Intel HD Graphics drivers are to be kept up-to-date via Windows Update?

A:Windows Update vs Dell Update - Intel HD Graphics 530/630 Driver

ZINGAM,
Referring to the Intel HD graphics driver.
Windows gets code from Intel for the driver and they will implement it in the OS. Dell also gets code from Intel and will release it. Also, Intel will post the driver on their site to download. You can uninstall the Microsoft driver if you choose and install the Dell update driver.

Windows Update is not telling me I need or can update my Wireless networking, but Intel's Update Driver Utility says I should and is offering the update. How would you recommend I proceed?

A:Should I trust Intel's Driver Update utility or Windows Update?

G'day Rolo,

The difference between the two drivers is that the Windows one is digital signed/tested by Microsoft. I would say that unless the Intel one delivers more benefit than the Windows one, and everything works as expected, then there is no need to update.

You often see this with graphics card drivers too, for example.

Golden

Hiya, just a while I ago I tried to install the NVidia driver update in my windows update but it says it failed after trying to install. Was wondering could this corrupt my video card driver or registery or can anything be done to make this error like it never happened before? Currently I'm using a GTX 460 with NVidia driver version 311.06 , many thanks.

A:nvidia driver update failed in windows update

go to windows update, click on the "View update history" link, find the driver that failed to install, double click on it and post the error code in this thread.

Hi,
I see that in the Anniversary I can't no more AVOID the automatic search and download of drivers.

I want to STOP this, I want myself to choice my driver and update them.

I read that in "gpedit.msc" > "Windows Update" > "Do not include drivers with WU" > ENABLE

And I did, BUT, Windows Update still see drivers to update such Intel HD, Touchpad, etc.

Why?

On Windows 10 Pro, Version 1511, Build 10586, I've hidden troublesome Nvidia driver updates, using the wushowhide troubleshooter package for Windows 10.

Even with the updates hidden, the next time an update check/cycle is triggered, the Nvidia driver updates are detected and installed. Upon rebooting normally after the driver updates are installed, I see a Windows STOP error (blue screen of death) shortly after signing on Windows.

I can remove the driver updates by uninstalling the associated applications/packages through the Programs and Features control panel. I've also tried to first remove the display adapter in Device Manager, selecting the option to Delete the driver software for this device then removing the associated applications/packages in Programs and Features. As long as I do this before rebooting (after the driver updates are installed), I don't see STOP errors and I can then install an older Nvidia driver that works without STOP errors. If the driver update happens to slip in unnoticed, I can reboot in Safe Mode, sign on and proceed with driver application/package removal, then reboot normally.

The latest (but older) Nvidia driver published by Dell for this laptop apparently works fine (no STOP errors):

But the latest "compatible" Nvidia driver from Windows Update produces frustrating STOP errors, resulting in a largely unusable system:

I've also tried this method to blocking/hiding the Nvidia driver updates, but the result is the same: W... Read more

A:Can't hide NVIDIA driver update in Windows Update

I'm cautiously optimistic I found a reasonable workaround (requires the Pro edition of Windows), by using AppLocker to disallow executables signed by Nvidia to run. This way I can leave the Windows Update service enabled and don't need to constantly fight the Nvidia driver updates that I supposedly "hid" using the wushowhide troubleshooter. For anyone else in this or a similar predicament:

Right-click the Start button and click Run, or use the + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command dialog.

In the Open text box, type gpedit and click OK.

Expand Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker > Executable Rules. Right-click in the pane on the right and click Create New Rule... In my case, I created a Publisher rule with action Deny for Everyone, and used an Nvidia driver installer file as the reference file to capture the Publisher information.

Create exceptions as necessary. Since I want the older (already installed) Nvidia driver of my choice to function, I created a wildcard Path exception for the Nvidia Program Files folder.

Hope this is helpful...

The driver for my old HP 990cxi printer is not included in Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit.
When connecting to the Internet Windows checks for newer versions of drivers and with that
I was able to get the HP printer working.

My question: where does Windows save the driver package after such an online update?
Is there a way to download this package and make the driver update offline afterwards?

There is an application called driver backup that does just that. When you have the most current drivers for your setup and run driver backup, you have a set of the drivers you can store anywhere you like (just in case back up the backup)

Neither of my laser printers have Windows 7 drivers. I am currently running home premium, but will be upgrading to ultimate.

Can anyone tell me the steps to go through to see if a Vista driver will work, or how to run the XP driver in compatibility mode? I am computer savy, but brand new to 7 from XP.

I tried allowing auto find of drivers and it still tells me there are no drivers. I searched manufacturers web site, and no news at this time of whether or not drivers will be available.

Vista drivers will probably work.

G'Day

After successfully installing a Cannon ip 4200 and after a failed install of other programs I had to roll back the windows to the "last system settings that worked". When installing the new printer driver it comes up with numerous errors depending on which method I use to install the driver.

My Question:

Can anyone tell me how to get the printer driver into a fresh state so I can re-install it?

Thanks.

A:Printer driver issue - can not reinstall printer driver.

Uninstall the Printer driver in Add Remove Programs. Download Glary utilities and run the defaults. Then go to Start/Run and type CMD and hit enter. in the command prompt type chkdsk /f/r and hitr enter Then type Y and reboot your computer. The Check Disk utility starts at next boot up to correct any errors.

I have an HP Laserjet 5 printer and I need to get it working on my newly-installed Windows 7. That driver isn't available from HP and it isn't available in Windows 7's list of printers. Windows Update has been giving me the "try again later" error message since yesterday afternoon.

I know the driver is available from Windows Update because I got it working on a previous Windows 7 installation by downloading an expanded list of printers from Windows Update before.

Now, here's my question: I would like to have this driver in my possession so I don't have to risk this problem again at a later time. Does anyone know where/how I can get it?

Samsung laser printers are great for SoHo environments and the drivers are a solid as they can be in my experience. However, when I recently upgraded to Windows 8 CP I stumbled upon an error when trying to print even though the Control Panel indicated that the device was ready and connected.

The error messages read:
"Error printing on Samsung CLX-3185 Series"
"Printer is in an error state"

A small setting tweak on the drivers panel will fix this.

Go the Devices > Printers > Right-click on the device icon and select Printer Properties. Select the Ports tab. Then unselect the option "Enable bidirectional support". You should be good to go.

Thank you!

Installed Windows 8 on one condition, that the printer would work. Made an account just to say thanks. Wonderful.

I have tried many times and have run diagnostics, but nothing works. I think it must be someting in Windows 7 is misconfigured, but I don't know what. Can someone help?

Hiya pal and welcome to the forums

Could you give a bit more info like the model printer you are trying to install.
Most HP printers require you to install the CD/Downloaded drivers before you plug the printer physically in. Same goes if you are installing it via Wi-Fi

I have a AMD 64 bit system running Windows XP Professional x64.

I recently bought an HP LaserJet3390 printer.

HP does not yet have a printer driver to support x64.

I'd like suggestions on how to use the printer.

A:Windows XP Professional x64 Printer Driver

To just use the printer load any old generic Laserjet 4 or 5 or 1200 series printer whatever drivers are native to the OS. HP's base drivers work across the board on any of their devices. You will not have full functionality of the scanner and the advanced options but you iwll be able to print.

Having problems with windows 7 laptop being unable to find the printer driver on the XP (SP3) desktop. The printer - canon pixma mp780 - is plugged into the desktop but the laptop can't find the driver on the desktop so keep getting Printer is Offline message.

When trying to install the printer driver on the laptop I get the message that the installation is incomplete and that it can't find the printer port.

The printer is installed on the laptop and shows as default. I can see the printer on the desktop from the laptop -the networking is fine - but I can't find the driver. I know it's there cause the printer works.

HP 1610 Printer driver. Has anyone else having trouble loading it. It keeps asking for a "msi" file which I can find and point to but no dice. HP says I need to buy a new printer as the driver doesn't work. He suggested I try the Vista driver, a good idea but no luck.

To their credit, HP sold me the upgraded printer for $70 and let me keep the old one. You would think a driver change or maybe firmware would be easier. If anyone else found a work around, please share the wisdom.

What driver are you trying to install?

Dell says it's not compatible with Win7, probably because they never supplied a Win7 driver for it. > Operating System Compatibility with Dell Printers | Dell US

But you should be able to use the Vista x64 drivers in compatibility mode.
Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on),
Looking at the Dell web site they currently do not list any drivers so hopefully you have a disk with the x64 Vista drivers to use.
