Odd Google Chrome banner, what was it?

Q: Odd Google Chrome banner, what was it?

What happened
About 17 days ago now, while I was searching something on Google, while using Google Chrome, a banner came up on the top of the web page (to clarify, the top of the Google search results, not as part of Chrome). I was, at the time, logged in to my Google account, on my Windows 10 machine. The banner had a blue shield icon in the top left corner, in the center, some text along the lines of "update your account for added security and transparency", and to the right, two blue buttons along the lines of "no thanks" and "tell me more". The banner actually used Google resources, it looked like something made by Google, and not cheap or fake looking at all. If I closed the search, the banner would go away, but would sometimes pop up again. I tried to see if it would pop up on another computer, my Mac, but it never seemed to.
I was a bit suspicious, and didn't want to click on the links, since they seemed so unprompted. A quick google search provided no information concerning any sort of account update, which made me more suspicious. The closest was a several year old post about adwords or adsense, which I don't use. Though I did try to get Google App Engine running, before I learned I had to pay for it, and backed out part way through the signup process. This also happened a day or two after an update for Kaspersky, during which Windows 10 warned me I was unprotected and that I should turn on Defender.

What I did so far
Worried that my system may have been compromised during the Kaspersky update, I did quite a bit:
Logged out of anything currently logged in (i.e. GMail, Facebook, etc.)
Reinstalled Kapsersky w/ a fresh download from Kaspersky's website, retrieved with a clean PC.
Updated Chrome through Ninite
Ran several full Kaspersky scans from Safe Mode
Ran several scans from Avira Rescue disk
Ran RKill (as iexplorer.exe), TDSSkiller, AdwCleaner, and HitmanPro
Hitman found some Tracking Cookies. Avira marked some files from the old Voxlap game engine I carried over from my old PC as trojans (though me and a friend discussed it, and it looks like Avira was being jumpy. The files were labeled "gen" trojans or something, apparently what Avira's heuristic detection labels suspected trojans, as a safety measure. Since the file didn't matter to me now, I deleted it while writing this post). Other than those, the scans were clean.

Summary
I think that summarizes what went on. With all the clean scans, it looks like I just jumped the gun. Maybe there was an account update for a regular old google account, with a (by my standards) needlessly vague prompt. There were prompts to update Chrome around then, and around the same time, a new blue shield icon appeared in the google apps toolbar in the Google search. However, the vague wording and lack of info worried me, and I'm worried something may be/have been on my PC, allowing fake popups to appear as part of some sort of phishing scam. Honestly, I just want some piece of mind. If this is bad, I don't want to have to uproot my PC, as depending on what I have to do, I might lose LOTS of data.

Thank you for your time, and I hope this is the right sub-forum for this particular situation.

Preferred Solution: Odd Google Chrome banner, what was it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The problem is that my home page of Google Chrome browser has been hijacked by a adult website recently,
It shows up a banner with information of an adult web page every time when I open the browser.

I've installed the AdBlock plugin but it doesn't help. Please help me to make Google Chrome back to normal, please!

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

This is my problem. My family computer, which runs Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) with Service Pack 2, recently caught a bout of malware. The two most visible problems are a Google-redirect thing and additional banner ads that appear on certain sites--in my experience, those "certain sites" are YouTube and Facebook. I know they don't belong because they're always in the same places, such as directly ABOVE the banner ad that YouTube already has in the first place. This is particularly vexing on Facebook, as the ads actually cause slowdown while I'm browsing (Facebook was REALLY hit hard by this banner-ad issue).

Unfortunately I don't know exactly what methods my mother's attempted as far as removing these problems goes. I myself have run scans with Norton, Malwarebytes' Antimalware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. All three have picked up problems, but none have actually solved it. Most recently, Malwarebytes picked up a series of Trojan.Tracur things, and I removed them--this seems to have shut the Google-redirect problem up for the moment, but I have a feeling it'll be back. The ad problem is still here.

Another odd symptom I've noticed is that sometimes, hotlinks that open into new tabs or windows open a new tab or window and then give me a generic error message telling me that Internet Explorer isn't working properly (your basic "This tab is frozen" message). It doesn't crash the whole browser, it just for... Read more

Hello,

I'm trying to repair my parents computer. They were getting Trojan horse warning messages and crashing to blue screens. So far I have updated the BIOS and uninstalled all the browser addons and questionable apps I found on there PC. Since updating the BIOS it hasn't crashed to blue screen. However I'm getting a lot of lywqyjla.exe processes that say they belong to Google Chrome. I uninstalled Google Chrome and they are still there. Each of them is using varying amounts of memory and the CPU usage keeps spiking. I have run malware bytes and adw cleaner, each of them said they found and removed threats but these processes keep showing up.

Run a scan using RKill. Read its description as to what it does. Once you have successfully run the scan, DO NOT reboot.
Proceed with the other scans. Reboot if the MBAM or other scans ask you to.
RKill Download

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then... Read more

I've tried multiple anti-everything programs from Super Anti-Spyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, Spybot S&D, and various online scans that have found nothing, or found something but never fully cleaned my system. For a week or two, Google was being redirected to various ad sites, but after my system was "cleaned" everything was fine. Now today, anything remotely related to Google won't load at all. I've tried to manually remove the TDSS google-redirecting virus, but I have none of the files that supposedly come along with the virus.

An install of Google Crhome browser is apparantly recording cookies while the Google Chrome browser itself is not being used;  the cookies seem to be of webpages and sites that other people in this location visit through another browser.  This makes me thing that the Google Chrome browser sneaks information from the user of other browsers on the computer, and this makes me wonder, what more is being done with this set of cookies lifted from the other browser?

This cannot be normal; is it?

Every day, I come to the particular computer with google chrome on it, open history, see the cookies listed, delete them, and only use the browser in Incognito mode.  No cookies recorded during any of my usage sessions.  Later, after other people who never use Chrome use the computer, go online (with Internet Explorer), makes their website visits, and then finish; when I come back to use the computer again and go online in incognito mode on Chrome, ... there again are more cookies listed, and mostly from sites that I did not visit.

This just seems like it should not be happening.  Tell me about it?

Hi all

This has happened for the past two days, Google will open fine, and will look slightly different to normal....if I click on a link it will either go to a search engine site, or open the link fine...however in a new tab which is not normal.

If I try to do a second search in that particular google search, it will reload, but be the same page as before.

Also these annoying Vimax pills banner ads are popping up on some sites (including this one), they obviously seem related in one way or another...

Whenever I open Google Chrome the first time after I finish booting my computer, it hangs for three seconds, during that time I see a wild amount of solid flashing on my hard-drive light indicator.

Upon looking on my task manager, I see 4 Chrome processes running, one of which seems to be causing a'lot of activity on one of the hard-drives. After a said few seconds the process disappears leaving only three processes and no hard-drive activity.

Is there anyway of stopping this kind of strange hard-drive activity when 'm opening chrome? I'm afraid the repeat thrashing might cause my hard-drive to wear out prematurely.

If anyone can help, please respond.

Thank you in advance.

About a week ago, I started getting messages saying "Google Chrome has crashed" when Google Chrome was not open. When I opened task manager, many Google Chrome processes under the same name were running. To try to fix the problem, I uninstalled Google Chrome, but the processes are still running.

Right now there are about 15 processes named "dlxyoesklw.exe *32" with the description "Google Chrome" in the task manager. The number of running processes changed frequently, and there are sometimes more than 30 running, all using various amounts of memory. When I press "End Process," more processes just appear.

For the past few days when I open up Google Chrome I get a white page with a yellow ribbon at the top that says "Chrome didn't shut down correctly" and then an option to "restore" which only brings me to a new tab page.
I have looked for solutions and have tried going into appdata and changing my "Default" folder into "Default_old" then closing down Chrome and opening it again but that doesn't work (and I don't get another "Default" folder as the instructions says I should). I have tried disabling my extensions (of which pretty much all of them are ad blockers) and apps. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome but so far nothing has worked. Am I just not doing these things correctly? Is there another way I can stop this? Because I would really love to open up Chrome and have my homepages there.

Thanks!

Hi,I was recently infected with the Windows Repair bug and fixed (maybe its still there) it via one of the posts on the sites. So I'm thinking I might have had a couple of other infections that were dormant for a while or Malwarebytes or Symantec never noticed. After fixing that, I noticed Google Chrome stopped working. When I started googling in Firefox and IE i noticed the page would redirect. And then an the "Internet Explorer Script Error" with the URL pointing to apparent spam urls "http;//celebrity-gossip.net/ashley-tisdale..." as an example. So I updated and ran Malwarebytes AM, Symantec & Microsoft Defender to see what they would. Symantec found an bloodhound virus in an archived drive. And i cleaned whatever Malwarebytes found, forgot now since its been a 4 days.I've tried the TDDSkiller.exe and that wouldnt launch. I tried renaming it too, but nothing.I found another thread and tried cleaning with SuperAntiSpyware and Hitman.I don't remember the correct order I've ran these, but followed according to the threads, including safed mode, internet off, etc...Anyways, any help is appreciated. here is the log:.DDS (Ver_11-03-05.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Mikael at 21:35:05.37 on Thu 04/07/2011Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.13 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_24Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.902 [GMT -7:00].AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition *Enabled/Updated* {FB06448E-52B8-493A-90F3-E43226D3305C}.===========... Hi! I am a heavy google search user who frequently uses google to: define ___, calculate equations etc.

But recently my google search results is changed to:

The top bar still appears perfectly normal when I am not in the search result page:

If it is related, bing has problem as well - it goes black screen:

The characteristics are:
One page itself:
- Words appear bigger
- It seems like I've log out but I am actually still logged in
- Google tips and tricks such as define, tilt etc all are not working
- Clicking "more" and "search tools" refresh the page and does nothing.
Others:
- In other places such as email, youtube, the functionality remains completely normal and unaffected
- I do not think the problem is related to the external internet settings as other devices are able to access these functions/websites without any problem.
- I have no problem accessing any other webpages.

Solutions tried and still not working:
- Completely reset google chrome's setting
- Reinstalling google chrome
- Resetting internet explorer setting
- Resetting computer's ip setting through cmd- netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
- Full scan with avast antivirus.

Any other ideas please? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated as these tips and tricks are a truly useful function for me.

I too have the exact same problem. i have tried hard for a month+ on 100s of sites with no avail. this probably is some super smart form of malware/virus which changes your IE's lan proxy settings to "127.0.0.1:8080.proxy.pac", this seems to affect chome and IE while firefox looks ok. the only "visible" difference is with the google main page as you described you'll also notice that at the bottom of the page, the number of page results are limited to 10 and no more, you just cant see more results than that. I couldnt find any any solid fix to this (not even complete reformat) The only temporary solution(till next reboot) seems to be to go to internet options in IE - connections tab - deselect that proxy setting and select automatically detect settings though i personally use hola better internet extension which seems to fix the problem till its kept on. I want this dreaded issue to get some attention so that am actual solution is found :/

For a few days now, after getting one of those fake "antivirus" programs my Google Chrome browser is unable to open any pages. Hey there. I've recent been having problems with Firefox/Google Chrome where my searches are being redirected to random sites when I click on the results. In addition the spellcheck function doesn't work if this searches are mistyped. I've tried several different programs with no success in fixing the matter. Among them are Dr. Web Cure it. As well as Malwarebytes which caused my computer to crash both times I tried using when it reached a file called zipfldr.dll

I've looked around at a couple sites but as nothing seems to be working I thought I'd give this a try. Any help would be apperciated, and it only seems to be affecting Firefox, and Chrome. Oh, and in addition to the redirect it's highlighting random phrases within the webpage with something called Clicksor, as well as the redirects going through something called 123bounce.

Hello to all,
I have installed google chrome and I really like it. However it has one major drawback. It remembers what I have typed in google search bar.
How can I disable this?
I have uncheck every option in "under the hood" settings, but that is not it.
These search items disappear only when I do clear browsing data. But on the second use when I want to type something in google search item filed or just click on it everything that I searched in the previous session (if not cleared explicitly) is shown in form of drop down list.
Internet explorer and firefox allowed me to turn this auto completion whenI wanted.
Is it really that difficult in chrome?

Thanks

A:Google chrome remembers what I typed in google search engine

I think you can only block the search history in Chrome by using private mode.

Wrench icon > New Incognito Window.

This will prevent any searches, downloads and websites appearing in your history, and will delete all cookies when you close the window.

Before I even say anything, I have tried to reinstall Chrome 3 times and the problem still stands.

So my problem is that when I try to login to my Google account on Google Chrome, the web page goes white and Chrome does not log in. The steps I took are as follows:

It starts on the regular Chrome login screen. (see attached picture #1)
I insert my password and press the 'Sign In' button.
It loads to a white screen. No loading, it is always finished every time I try. (see attached picture #2)

I don't know if this is relevant, but the app launcher also suffers from this malfunction and will not display any of my apps (see attached picture #3). There are no errors when starting Chrome, or opening the page. The page is just white for no reason. Nothing has ever gone wrong with Chrome (surprising, I know) and I really love it. It is fast and it looks sleek. It IS a RAM hog, but apparently my 2 GB ram laptop can handle it, so I'm happy. My opinions aside, I hope you can help me fix this.

So, i recently upgraded from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome after a batch of virus problems that i FINALLY got removed from my computer and at the suggestion of many other people.

It worked fine for a week or two, then i noticed randomly it would decide that a website/page i was on either had too many cookies to load i'd get an "oh snap" this page isn't working because of "blah" error, (it had a little file folder with a angry face on it). usually closing the browser then opening it back up would fix the problem. Several times i'd have to go delete all the temp files/cookies etc for it to work right again.

Well tonight it started doing something even more weird, it wouldn't load anything.
Every site i tried to type up there in the http:// bar it would just forever be "searching" for the link then half of the time it would just say sorry "the page can not be displayed"

I tried going to google (my home page) typing in the site for instance "tech guys" and search, it would find a page full of websites, but when i clicked on the link (to any of the options) it would either a: pretend it was looking and just refresh the exact same search results page i was on, or be go into a forever loading process which usually resulted in it saying "the page can not be displayed." I used my phone to look up why this might be happening and people mentioned "disabling" the HTTP of which i had no id... Read more

Hello and let me go ahead and say thank you for your time! I don't know how much of the following is actually important, but I would rather be too detailed than not detailed enough; please forgive me.This happened two days ago, on November 25th. I browse with Google Chrome, my OS is Windows 7, and I use Avast! as my antivirus program. I was using StumbleUpon and it took me to an article on cracked.com, a site I've enjoyed many times with no problems. I was immediately redirected to some advertising site, you know the kind--lots of banners and text ads. I also got a few pop-ups. Before I could even react, the computer shut itself down. I booted it back up, and attempted to start Chrome again. The window where the web page would normally be was completely blank, there was no url in the url bar, and the loading circle that normally appears beside the tabs was not there. I don't think it froze or anything, my mouse icon stayed the same and the window didn't white out, but nothing worked. I tried to close it the regular way and couldn't, so I ended it through task manager. I tried to load it again, this time disabling the options to load the tabs I had open last session. I got the same results and again had to shut it down the same way. First I rebooted my computer, and tried to load up Chrome. Same results, so I shut it down with task manager. Next, I tried uninstalling. I went to the control panel, right-clicked Chrome on the list, and told it to remo... Read more

Hi, tried to solve this on my own for several days with not much success.

Running Windows XP SP3.

The problem started with Google Chrome, it stopped working one evening. The browser is stuck on an infinite loading loop but works when the "--no-sandbox" argument is added to the command line. Internet explorer worked fine. I did some googling on the problem and apparently it's either some anti-virus or a virus.

Switched to Opera browser. Got infected with ave.exe "xp total security". Ran Super Anti-Spyware/Malware Bytes/AVG 9 to remove. Seemed to be removed but I'm still getting google search redirects in Opera.

Downloaded and ran TDSSKiller. In safe mode, it detects nothing. In standard mode it detects a problem with Atapi.sys. The message is something like.

"Problems in memory 1/0/0
"Problems in files 1/0/1"

However, after every reboot, it's the same message.

Downloaded Gmer today and tried to run, in standard mode Gmer would crash with a BSOD, the BSOD flashed quickly so I'm unable to see what the exception was. Currently I'm running Gmer in safe mode.

Could use some help.

Thanks.

Hello Forum,

I am a newb here and recently had some problems with the computer after letting my brother use it.  I noticed today when I was doing a search that whenever I search either from google.com or the chrome url bar I get redirected to cse.google.com/?cse ect...

I have AVG but nothing shows.  I downloaded a recommended program called spyhunter which found 323 errors, but wanted me to pay for the service.  I then downloaded spybot, and malwarebytes which found less than spyhunter (only 240) and proceeded to cleanup.

After the PC restarted, it went into a chkdsk mode then to windows.  But the Chrome still
redirects to cse.google.com for results.  I have never made a custom search.

I have Windows 7Ultimate 64bit

Please tell me what you need me to do as I know there is more information you will need, but I am afraid to touch the computer right now.  I am on here from a laptop I have for traveling.

Someone told me it was sysdate but I dont know what that means.  Is it a redirect virus?  Why would someone make adware or virus for Google?  Please help.

Hello,

Whenever I search for things using Google, I sometimes end up getting redirected to random websites which have nothing to do with what I have searched. Update: It just happened with IE, so it's not just Chrome as it first appeared.

For example, I searched for some help about a problem I was having with Ableton Live (turned out to be PEBKAC, so it's unrelated) and I ended up getting "madwebplus(dot)com/search(dot)php" and "insideps2games(dot)com/search(dot)php" and when I tried to get here I got "badcredit-creditcards(dot)net/result(dot)php?Keywords=tech+support+guy&r=db8752b12af8e4f24b3549ad566de91dc8f1b5f7e6e246a4632487d1571c7e4cd5fdd271755d148d1ba39491f099a988&Submit=Go"

It's only started happening today, and as far as I can remember I didn't download anything before it started happening. All I have downloaded is Zonealarm, Spybot S&D and HijackThis and they were downloaded after to try to fix the problem.

Spybot Search and Destroy found nothing, and AVG Free found 2 things and fixed them, but the redirects are still happening.

Here's what AVG found, just in case it's relevant.
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe (2460)";"Trojan horse Generic16.AGNN";"Reboot is required to finish the action" (I did reboot)
