One charger for Ideapad 510 and Thinkpad T540

Q: One charger for Ideapad 510 and Thinkpad T540

I have a Thinkpad T540 from work, and a private Ideapad 510. I'm looking for a wall charger solution that can be used for any of these laptops, which I could keep in my bag, regardless of which laptop I take with me. Both use 20V power. The Thinkpad charger produces 4.5A (90W), I think that power source should work fine with the Ideapad that requires just 3.25A (65W). Is there a solution to convert the Thinkpad's rectangular plug (slim tip) to the the very small power plug used by the Ideapad 510 (round, 4mm outer, 1.7mm inner) ? Alternatively, is there any universal charger available, which offers both plugs? Thanks,Kai

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Im considering adding a Samsung 850 EVO 500 gb SSD to my T540 Thinkpad. I would do this by removing the dvd drive, and buying a harddrive caddy. Ideally, I would then transfer my OS (Win 10) to the SSD to speed up the system. Anyone have any experience doing this? Any issues I should be aware of?

Unlike other laptops I've had which were able to run without the battery even in the laptop, i.e. Only plugged in, my laptop requires some level of charging before even turning on when plugged in.  is this normal or is there a setting to allow the device to turn on when plugged in. Quite a pain having to wait for it to re charge, isn't that the point of corded use? Also it seems to die pretty quickly and even when put to sleep when closed fizzles out quickly. Again is this normal?

Hello. I have a plan to buy a T460 during the upcoming Christmas sales. I also want to buy an extra battery with it. As a business person who has to travel a lot, i would love to keep both of my batteries fully charged all the times. External battery chargers are hard to find and i, after a lot of search, found one. An old Lenovo support document (https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht037009) shows a list of batteries that can be charged using that charger. But T460's Thinkpad 68+ 6 cell 72 Wh battery is not in that list. And, that doc says that i will need a 65W ac power adapter for charging. But T460 comes with 45W power adapter. So my questions are: 1) Can i charge T460's battery with the external charger? 2) Will 45W power adapter be enough or do i have to buy a 65W one? Thank you very much in advance for your time.

In the course of using my 13 (Type 20GJ, 20GK) Laptop (ThinkPad), my external battery charger got damaged. Part of the male end that goes into the computer to charge it has somehow split in half; as a result of this, it no longer fits into my computer and my computer doesn't charge.  So my questions are as follows:1) Instead an AC Adapter model # ADLX45DLC2A, could I temporarily use a replacement AC charger model # ADLX90NCC2A that is rated at a slightly higher amperage? Would using it cause problems for my computer? 2) If not, how would I go about getting a replacement AC charger? Thanks for responding to this in advance.

Hi,I need a new charger for my thnkpad edge e145 but I'm a bit worried about the specs on the chargers that I have found. On my battery it says that the voltage is 10.8V and current is 5.8Ah but all the adapters I have found that are supposed to be compatible with my laptop have a voltage around 20V and current around 4.5A. For example this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-AJP-IBM-Lenovo-THINKPAD-EDGE-E145-20BCA00L-90W-Ac-Adapter-Charger... Since I don't know anything about how laptop batteries and chargers work I have no idea if a charger with those specs will work for my laptop. Most forums I have looked at seems to suggest that if the current is to low on the adapter it will overheat or not work at all and that to much voltage in the adapter could damage the laptop. Could someone tell me if a charger like this will be safe to use with my laptop? Unfortunately I don't have the charger that came with the laptop anymore so I can't compare it to the new ones. I also couldn't find any information on the adapter on lenovos website or in my hardware maintence manual.

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.

A:Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

I googled for some time and could find solutions without using screw drivers as this has built in battery. I got this laptop like a month ago. its working fine on day 1 but the following days, I cant turn it on without using charger even though the battery is 100% charged. When on battery, it wont turn on. Then I plug in the charger and tried to turn on but it wont start. The plug in light is on. And I would need to wait for around 30 minutes to try to turn on again. When turning on it would show something like this. Sometimes, the screen would blink in dark green and I can hear the starting up sound repeatedly but it just wont start. Anyone can help with solutions without the need to open the laptop as I have no clue to do that? Thanks in advance

How can I charge my 100S in the car?The Lenovo AC charger puts out DC 5V 4A, and I can't find any DC 12V to DC 5V 4A adaptors. Could I use a 2A USB phone car charger, with a USB to 3.5mm barrel jack cable, and trickle charge it with the laptop turned off?I'd rather not use an inverter, but if I have to, could I use a cheap modified sine wave 150w (300w max) inverter? Or will this shorten the lifespan of the Lenovo AC charger?Or as a last resort, do I use a 12V > 5V DC buck converter to make my own adaptor? Thanks.

I can't get a generic power adapter to work with my Lenovo Ideapad, and I have no idea why. All of the appropriate electrical numbers match. And to add insult to injury, the charger works fine with my wife's less expensive model. I've tried plugging and unplugging, uninstalling the Microsoft controller, uninstalling Lenovo Power Management?in short, all the solutions you commonly see on the web, and none of them fix the problem.  The computer simply won't recognise the charger.  It's a serious problem with the Ideapad?this is the first computer I've ever owned that had a power cord go bad in more than three decades of owning computers! Why won't a generic work on my Lenovo while it will on my wife's Lenovo? A money grab by Lenovo? Does anyone know how to fix the problem without me being forced by Lenovo to buy their overpriced charger? Thanks.

Can you try Removing the battery and unplugging the AC adapter,
Then hold down the power button for at least 10 sec.
Now try Reconnecting everything and see if it will charge fine.

If not-

Try Removing the Battery and plugging in the Ac adapter see if that will work,

Hi, I bought this Ideapad 100s in April and have just recently started using it.  It works well when it is plugged in, but I can't use it when it is unplugged.  Every time it is switched on without the power, the screen flickers off and on, as though there is a loose connection between the main part of the computer and the monitor. Is it possible this could be something to do with power settings - since it only happens when it is unplugged - or does it sound like my computer is faulty? Thanks for any help you can provide.

A:Ideapad 320 15IKB power key goes off in 1 sec. Cannot boot or anything. Charger problem?

con'd   More symptoms:  I tried charging for several hours.  Original Lenovo charger light stays on as if it is charging.  Power light comes on for about 1 second then a slight click and goes off.  Sounds like a dead battery.  Cannot boot or anything.  This laptop worked well for 2 months then went off unexpectedly a couple of days ago while in Europe.  Charger was plugged in but I was talking some and not paying attention if charging.  I could have easily missed the low battery warning.  The 110/240 charger looks okay as does its barrel tip and the power in port on the laptop.  I tried several electrial outlets and several plug adapters with the Lenovo when I got to England where I am until Thursday when I return to the US.  I will try another charger there.  Any ideas? Hi AnnieB345,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Here is the article guide to correct the warranty entitlement.

How to correct an incorrect Warranty Date

"If you had purchased your machine from a retailer, business partner, reseller, Lenovo starts the Base Warranty at the time the shipment was purchased by the retailer, business partner, or reseller from Lenovo. To compensate for the time the computer may have sat in a warehouse or on the shelf unsold, Lenovo generally adds an additional month to theBase Warranty, Lenovo allows date to be adjusted."

Call in technical support. Have the receipt (proof of purchase) handy to send via email so that they can have it updated and likewise inform them about the adapter so both issues would be handled at the same time.

I hope this helps answer your query.

I recently puchased an Ideapad 720s and have been noticing problems with sound skipping when the laptop is connected to HDMI while power connector is connected. It could be in conservation mode and not charging, but problem still exists. I ran several tests to make sure it was not the HDMI cable or receivers problems. ( I used two different hdmi cable receiver setups). Funny enough, the hdmi audio skipping does not occur with the laptor is running on battery. The hdmi audio problem frequency is random but it's often enough to be very distracting. I output my display to external source all the time, so this is a big problem. I think the charger might be causing interference with hdmi signal internally.

Hello, I have a 3 yr old Ideapad Z510(that came with Win8)which worked absolutely fine until recently. If I plug in the charger when the laptop is on, it abruptly turns off and would never boot again until I remove the charger. However, this is not how it behaves every time. There are some rare instances where I could still operate the machine with charger plugged in.  When turned off, battery is charging and also goes to full 100%. When turned on(battery mode) it does not drain rapidly - I could still get a fairly decent stand up time. So I am assuming the battery is good. I don't see any thermal issues either. Things I tried:-------------- > Tried with a different charger - no help.> Updated the firmware - no help.> Update the entire driver pack - no help.> Applied windows patches, reinstalled and also upgraded windows to Win 10 - no help.> Reseated the battery and associated cables - no help.  I am not sure if there is anything that I could do to at least diagonize the problem before I give it to the service station. Any pointers on this is much appreciated   Thanks much in advance.

Just noticed this whenever I plug or unplug the charger. The laptop lags for 1-2 seconds before returning to normal. This is noticeable when playing games or watching videos. Haven't seen any abnormal drops or spikes with the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD which would suggest a hardware issue. Tried doing this while running 3DBenchmark, and there is a huge drop in FPS, from 130-200fps down to almost 16fps esp. when unplugging the charger. Is this normal?
