Satellite A660 Windows7 home recovery data needed

Q: Satellite A660 Windows7 home recovery data needed

Unfortunately my disk is broken completely and I am not able to boot it anymore. Is there a way to download somewhere the data from the recovery partition?

My Model: Satellite A660-16Z (italian model)

Operating System: Windows 7

Next I tried to order from the web
the recovery image, but after inserting the serial number, the web-system shows me the message:

For your device no recovery medium can be ordered, because it comes either not from the region of Toshiba Europe, or it is too old for this service

thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: Satellite A660 Windows7 home recovery data needed

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Satellite A660 Windows7 home recovery data needed

The notebook belongs definitely to European series so the only plausible reason why you cannot order the recovery disk is: notebook is too old.
In such case you can install only a clean Windows 7 system. The essential drivers are available on the Toshiba EU driver page and could be installed after the system installation.

Since few weeks my A660's audio driver behaves strangely. The built-in speakers are fine, the problem appears when I plug a jack cable in, either if it is an earphone or a 2.1 speaker. The system realizes that I plugged in something, the built-in speakers stay silent (as well as the device on the jack output), and when I remove the jack cable the built-in speakers are working again. The problem is clearly with the software/driver, as it appears only in Windows, everything runs smoothly under Ubuntu.

I am using Windows7, and everything is up to date. Disabling and later on re-enabling the "High Definition Audio Device" driver didn't solve the problem, as well as reinstalling the latest driver found on Toshiba's site. What could be wrong and how can I fix it?

A:Satellite A660, no sound on jack output (Windows7)

Did you check whether the headphones appear in
control panel -> sound -> playback tab
and are marked as default device?

If not do that… the headphones must be chosen as default device.

I am looking at upgrading my toshiba satellite a660 the manual says only 8gb can be installed is this a main board issue or a bios issue or can I put in 16gb just curious

A:Toshiba satellite a660 only 8gb ram????

If the manual says only 8 GB is supported, then that's what you are limited to. The chipset usually determines the limits, but sometimes the mainboard manufacturer/computer manufacturer can limit the amount even further.

Can you install windows 8 on a A660? would there be a drive incompatibility?

please share any feed back you may have.

Thank you.

A:Can I install Win 8 on Satellite A660?

First of all if you want to get more details about Win 8 , I recommend reading the threads here in the Win 8 forum category.

Secondly:; Yes, you can install the Win 8 on this A660.
Here you can find the Win 8 system requirements:

As you can see, your A660 is good enough for Win 8.

>would there be a drive incompatibility?
This is another question?. Check this Toshiba doc:
_Toshiba Upgrade Assistant for Windows 8 - Release Schedule and Supported Models_

If your model is listed there, it will get Win 8 drivers.

I have an A660-1FM that comes with a i7-720QM CPU.

I bought it off a contractor desktop/laptop engineer and at the time he said this was a good unit to buy because the CPU could be upgraded to the 740, 820 or 840 mobile CPUs, on the basis they were from the same family, using the same socket and launched at the same time.

He said Toshiba used the same motherboard for this CPU family too.

I now have an offer of a working 820 CPU for ?20 which I feel I cannot refuse.

I saw how easy it was to dismantle the A660 on Youtube, but before I have a go and waste time can anyone confirm this is possible?

The laptop is out of warranty and support so it's not as if I'm voiding any warranty.

I would be interested to know if anyone has changed the CPU in this particular model of the A660.

A:CPU upgrade on Satellite A660

> can anyone confirm this is possible?
Don?t think someone could be able to say for sure if such CPU would work until someone would try it out.
The point is the BIOS. As far as I know notebook manufacturer modify the BIOS and even if the CPU would be supported by chipset, there is still a question of BIOS compatibility.

But from my knowledge different A660 was equipped with different CPUs -> Intel Clarksfield and Arrandale

So possibly you will be able to use the mentioned CPU

I wanted to install the 2.30 BIOS, which is the currently latest one. I'm very much disappointed because I get a message written in terrible English saying the following:
There is an error occured, please check below items.
BIOS version above 230.
Battery capacity more than 20%.
AC is attached.

My current circumstance is that I'm running off external supply at all times because my battery died and I can't get a replacement any time soon. I'm moving to a new place and I'm attending a major LAN party this week, so I won't have time to fuss around with waiting for a DHL courier or a postman to graciously arrive with a package. But taking into that we're dealing with Polish Post, the postman will probably leave a note and get on with their day, which is useless to me, it voids the effort of waiting for them and makes me travel miles to get the package. And these batteries are quite expensive too.

I tried to pick the installer apart and I found a file called BiosCheck.ini, containing the following:
ProjectName = NWQAA
BiosVersion = 230
BatteryCap = 20

So I changed BatteryCap to -1, so obviously my 0 would always be greater. Nope. Didn't work. I think everyone would be perplexed to see that according to the installer's logic, -1 is greater than 0.

I tried to at least dump the BIOS with flashrom for Linux and that didn't work. Considering that the BIOS is a Phoenix TianoCore Secure, I thought that an actual BIOS update tool by Phoenix Technologies could do the... Read more

A:Cannot update BIOS on my Satellite A660

No, there is no other BIOS update since only the win-based BIOS update version is available on Toshiba driver website.

I guess you need good working and charged battery in order to update the BIOS.

But why you want to update the BIOS? Is something wrong with the notebook?
The BIOS update is an very serious update and should be done very carefully?
Wrong procedure can damage the motherboard!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 PSAW3A-07P00R.

I accidentally dropped an external hard drive on the ground.

I plugged it into my computer to see if it would still work.

Following this none of my 3 USB ports on the laptop are working.

I'm not sure if this was caused by the faulty/damaged hard drive that I plugged in.

I have uninstalled the USB drivers in the Device Manager and restarted to see them reinstalled, but it still doesn't work.

Does anyone know what else I could do?

My problem is as follows:

I switch the laptop on. The light on the on button lights up and that's all that happens. The screen doesn't come to life. It stays black.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

This happened 7 weeks ago. I took it to a toshiba service centre and they replaced the motherboard. It took them 5 weeks to get the system back to me but the problem has resurfaced. I can't even recover the system with holding the button on and 0 key simultaneously.

Any ideas?

A:Satellite Pro A660 - Not booting into Windows

Hi bobneil,

And what happens if you connect an external monitor? Can you see a picture on external monitor or is it also black?
Have you connected external devices such as keyboard, mouse, etc.? If yes remove all of them and make sure battery is fully charged before you try to start your notebook.

If you are able to start your notebook again I would try a BIOS update from official Toshiba website.
But before you do a BIOS update close all running programs (Antivirus, firewall, etc.) and make sure you are logged in as Administrator. Also unzip all files of zip-archive firstly before you do the update.

It’s possible to use two external monitor at the same time but you will need an additional external device like for example Dynadock U3

Hi ,

I have a Toshiba A660 Satellite laptop I bought about a year and 3 months ago.
I have had issues with overheating in the past but now it seems my battery is dead.

I have used this laptop on AC power mostly but the battery was plugged in.

I have read (on some forums) that batteries have an internal clock on how many charges they take but I am not sure whether to believe this.

Did I miss-use my laptop by keeping the battery in while using AC power ? Are the batteries limited by the producer to a set number of charges ?

I am not sure what to believe at this point , any advice would be useful.

I was expecting that spending more money (1000 Euros) on a laptop like Toshiba would help to use it longer.

Unfortunately, after using during 1 year and half, and only for work, it kept rebooting and switching off at some point.

I could not use the warranty as I've realised this after not using it for a year.

I spoke to Toshiba about reversing the BIOS as the issues that I've been experienced happened after updating the BIOS but the guy that I was speaking with keep ignoring me and not answering to them anymore. Sometimes, I regret bitterly buying Toshiba for the level of service that I've received until now.

I need to repair this laptop as it was quite powerful and I need it for my work. Unfortunately, I can't spend 1000 E this time.

Anyone would have the previous BIOS for the Satellite A660-1F5? or What could be the reason of the issues that I am experiencing?

Best Regards,

I have upgraded my Toshiba (A660) to 8.1 64x. (clean install)

All if working fine except the idle dim function, which seem to have disappeared from power options.
I believe a driver is necessary. (I have not installed a single Toshiba driver)

They don't seem to have VAP any more.

Can someone tell me what's the driver I need to install for this issue?

A:Satellite A660 - Win 8.1 power settings option not available

>All if working fine except the idle dim function, which seem to have disappeared from power options.
What do you mean exactly by idle dim function? Display backlight control???

From my knowledge Toshiba does not support Windows 8.1 on the Satellite A660 and therefore you would not find Windows 8.1 drivers for such series.

If you would like to install Windows 8.1 Toshiba tools and utilities, you would need to search for such software at your own hand. But I?m not quite sure if software released for other Toshiba notebooks would be compatible with A660 model.

However, fact is that Value Added Package for Win 8.1 does not exist.
This was the case using Vista or Win 7 but for Windows 8.1 such package is not available.
The VAP has been replaced by Toshiba System Driver.

A:ON/OFF button is not working properly on my Satellite A660-1H7

Such small parts and hardware components you cannot buy so easily. I presume the mechanism under the button must be replaced.

I have similar problem on my old Portege M800. It starts only if I press power button on certain place (upper right border). Just then can I hear ?click? noise and notebook starts properly. I presume you have similar problem, right?

Until now I didn?t open the notebook because I don't have maintenance manuals and don't want to damage anything.

Maybe you should contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can order right part and exchange it for you.

I tried fixing my moms laptop by restoring to a previous version.
At this point the laptop was still able to boot but there were issues that would take too long to list.

I tried to restore to a previous version (Toshiba A660 Windows 10).
After 20 minutes the laptop restarted but never came back up, saying that the restoration failed or something like that.
I shut down the laptop, where at this point the laptop did not turn on at all. so i unplugged every cable, and took out the battery. After waiting for 10 minutes I turned on the laptop and was stuck at this point (After TOSHIBA logo)
So I decided to reinstall windows 10. I plugged in a USB stick with Windows 10 which was used to reinstall this laptop before.
I go to boot menu by pressing f12, click on the USB and it brings me back to the screen above without any changes.

There is no indication that it even tried to boot from usb.

Any suggestions as to how to reinstall windows or even boot the laptop?

Thank you.

I have a Satellite A660-18N, Part No PSAW3E which, following the instructions on the UK Toshiba site, I have upgraded to Windows 8.

Windows 8 is telling me I need to re-installToshiba Disc Creator and according to Toshiba's UK site I should be able to do this, (and anything else needed), through the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant.

So I follow the link on the UK site, and my Satellite A660-18N isn't listed. The support page that I'm being linked to in the US appears to be only for drivers and doesn't seem to list the Upgrade Assistant anyway.

I tried a search on the US site and found and installed the Upgrade Assistant, but when I ran it I got a message "This Upgrade Assistant does not support your region".

Can anyone help me with this?

I've upgraded other computers, (some way older than this one), with no issues whatsoever; but this one has me pulling my hair out.

Many thanks in advance.

So get this message because you use the assistant which is not released for this unit.

Dynabook i7 3D A660 Laptop.

Ok; so I updated my i7 3D Dynabook to Windows 8.1 (x64) form Windows 7 (x64), and now the laptop reboots whenever I start touching the keypad.

Other wise works perfect.

It took me two hundred hours to figure this out; as I was typing on web sites usually when this re-booting occurs. And I couldnt remember how or why the laptop rebooted.

When I press the numberpad `plus` sign I get the BSoD immediately. But It takes a few presses of the numbers on the keypad for it to do the same.

If I press 1,2, 3, its ok,
If I press 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, the laptop gets a BSoD and reboots.

I did also install some automatic (mouse) software for a Microsoft mouse I was going to use; and I deleted that in `System properties` after this problem arose; but there is no change.

Whenever I type on the numberpad (especially the plus sign), the PS shuts down with a Blue screen of Death BSoD.

From my knowledge the Windows 8.1 isn?t supported on Satellite A660 because there are no special Windows 8.1 drivers for this notebook series but even if such drivers have not been published, it should not be a big problem to install and to run the Windows 8.1 on this unit.

I?m wondering how did you install the Win 8.1 on this notebook?
Did you upgrade from Windows 7 to Win 8.1 or did you perform an clean Win 8.1 installation?

Here is an nice Microsoft page providing some FAQs about the update to Windows 8.1
[Update to Windows 8.1: FAQ|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8]

In case you did a UPGRADE to Win 8.1 you can use Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant to check if your programs and devices are compatible with Windows 8.1.

I would be also interesting to know if the same BSOD would appear if external keyboard would be connected to the notebook.
In case the usage of external keyboard would NOT cause BSOD, I assume the internal keyboard is faulty and could be the troublemaker.
