Missing "Add Legacy Hardware" option inside Device Manager with Windows 7 - a workaround

Q: Missing "Add Legacy Hardware" option inside Device Manager with Windows 7 - a workaround

You might have noticed that the old 'Add Legacy Hardware' option seems to be missing. I tend to use this quite a bit whenever I need to add in a Loopback adapter or some piece of hardware that is not quite installing correctly. With that said, thankfully, you can still manually launch the 'Add Legacy Hardware' Control Panel applet by using hdwwiz.exe.http://blog.tiensivu.com/aaron/ ** https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Aaron.Tiensivu

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We used to have "stereo mix" option that enabled streaming audio recording without having to have the audio playing through the speakers. How do I do that now? What replaces that capability? Who makes my sound card? Why is that not readily available somewhere in Dell land? I can't believe forum searching found pretty much nothing on this.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Peace be upon all of you.
Hello and greetings.

My laptop is ASUS model A455L. My CD/DVD drive was working fine until one moment it disappeared from both "This PC" folder as well as from "Device Manager". It happened while I was burning a CD with Ashampoo Burning Studio 15. My current OS is Windows 8.1 (as what it was as when I purchased this laptop), and I do not upgrade/downgrade to any other OS.

I went through searching the internet for the solutions for weeks but failed to solve the problem.

1. Among the suggestions found on the internet is to delete the upper and lower class filters, but mine is not involved as it does not have any entry that says upper or lower class to begin with.

2. Another suggestions that I had tried was the addition of the following in the Registry:reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001"
I did the registry entry of the above by command prompt (admin) as well as manually in the regedit but failed to produce the results.

3. Initially when this problem occurred, the item CD/DVD Drive was still visible in the Device Manager but under the "Show hidden devices" option turned on. The information below was gotten from the properties of the device:Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.

A:CD/DVD Drive missing from "My PC" & "Device Manager"

First, there are no drivers for CD/DVD drives except the built in Windows drivers.

Since the device is not being detected by Windows, either there is some type of hardware problem or the BIOS is not detecting it (If the BIOS does not detect the drive, Windows will not detect it).

A BIOS reset is the easiest thing to do. Most BIOS have an option to reset it to the defaults. I would try this first.

If the BIOS reset does not fix it, there is some type of hardware problem. Whether its a connection problem for the drive (there are two connectors, data connection and power connection) either at the drive end or at the controller end (motherboard end). Or if the drive itself has failed. Unfortunately with a Laptop, accessing the connectors may require complete disassembly of the laptop.

Hello,

Problem is that the scanner is too old and epson doesnt provide a driver for this scanner for windows 8. But I found a how to guide on this and the instructions are great, and it seems to work for everyone else but I cant figure out how to uncheck "show compatible hardware" in device manager when you are trying to update drivers on a specific device.

I get there by right clicking on the device, selecting properties, "browse my computer for driver software," then "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then after that the window that appears does not have an option to uncheck "show compatible hardware." And so I can't continue

I was given the optoin to instead go back to wmp 10. This caused the problem and xp required a reactivation. I did so, but I still can't get on line, which is causing me to not be able to fix any other problems. The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

All of my USB Ports just stopped working. When I go to the device manager and check them I get the code 19 error:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.

I wasn't even in the registry and I have no idea how to restore the old settings that are apparently damaged.

I check microsoft and they said this:

A registry problem was detected.

This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service subkey. Try these options:

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration, which rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.
I did all those things and they still do not work. I think it is likely that I'll have to manual restore the registry valves for each USB port - but I have no idea how.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I am having a horrible night. Please someone show me how to fix this in the registry. I do not have system restore running so I can't use that. I hope no one ever has luck like this...

Click Action button-> click Scan for hardware changes

and
Open the Device Manager -> click View button -> check
Show hidden devices settings to see if they appear
If they are still not list, we need to install the hardware (plug a USB into all port for test ) manually again. It will pick up the proper driver and configure port.

I faced a problem - while the laptop was able to start the initials steps (the black screen where it shows the copying process of the Windows 7 files), i couldn't go any further than the step at which i need to choose a partition to install the OS on.

It simply says " A required CD/DVD device driver is missing" - when you start Windows 7 or Windows Vista from the setup disk". I tried Shift-F10 to start the CMD and format the HDD (NTFS format) on the spot, restarted, same error message. I disabled Fast Boot in the BIOS, the SATA controller is set to AHCI. I tried several topics @ Tom's Hardware forum, and elsewhere but i still cant find a definitive answer.

I read that maybe i should change the AHCI controller to IDE, only issue i face is that in BIOS i get no options - there's only AHCI as a choice, no IDE, no RAID.
Any Ideas? How do i get IDE controller option to appear in the BIOS settings (via the registry keys, or maybe i need to download that IDE controller (not sure if thats possible)) from the Intel's website (intel core i5 is the CPU of my laptop if that's of any help)?

A:Need help with installing Windows 7 "CD/DVD device driver is missing"

If you're using the USB Flash drive to install Windows . On the error window click on Ok twice . Then move the USB Flash Drive to another USB port on the PC and get back to the screen where it says Install Now and click on the Install Now button .

If that doesn't work try returning the DVD on a lower burning speed .

Entering the bios limits me to certain options. Is there anyway to access the other options? sorry, newbie here.

A:No "usb legacy support" "qfan" options on my asus laptop bios.

If your BIOS doesn't include such options, then they simply are not there.

I don't know about hacking BIOS's, and I wouldn't suggest it at all. You could brick your motherboard.

However, you should check with your manufacturer's website and see if there is an update available for the BIOS that may increase available options.

(Please tell me if I'm in the wrong area of this board)

But a friend living hundreds of miles away uses XP and ran an "unasked for" Pop-Up utility that said he had computer problems because of malware or spyware some unnamed entity had installed on his computer. Unfortunately he doesn't remember the name of the "so called spyware detector/remover", but he fell for the "Warning" and ran the program to "check" his system.

Of course, as most those unrequested detect/remover programs do...it found many "so called serious" problems. But would Not "fix/clean them" unless he payed for the program.

From THAT point on, his CD-ROM wouldn't work(which it had dependably always before)....the Device Manager that it "is there" and what make/model it is....and also says that it is enabled and working properly(but it isn't working, as before). And the Icon disappeared from from the My Computer folder. I guess that program somehow did something to it, in order to force people to pay for the program to "fix it" and othe so-called problems!

Has anybody ever heard of this?
Can you help me get his CD-ROM accessable and working dependably as before? Please??

thanks,
jA--

Hi,

On a fresh clean Windows 8 image, my software driver (signed) installs fine and shows up properly in the Device Manager. However once i uninstall it , subsequent reinstalls show up as 'Unknown Device' in the Device Manager.

From the device details, I find that it refers to /looks for the .inf file in c:\windows\inf folder but the file itself is missing from the location. The FileRepository has all the required files. But trying to update from there also fails.

Could anyone help me with troubleshooting this problem. What could be going wrong.

Thx,
Gita

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

Few days ago I have to install a new Bluetooth adapter on Windows XP with SP2. Every thing works great and I was just about to start the ICS and surprise Ö no "check box" in my NIC properties window to tic. You probably have the same problem and until you install the original (shipped) dongle drivers the ICS is missing. In fact if you donít have second network no ICS will be available. I suppose that Windows does not take the Generic BT driver as one. I know it is not a big deal but imagine on one side you have you ADSL modem connected to the Internet and you home PC, on another you have you PDA connected to the same PC via Bluetooth. But you can't share you internet, you can't serf or send and receive mails directly form the PDA you can't even chat using MS Messenger. Well if you don't care this Tutorial is not for you else here is the workaround I implement on my network.

Hi there. Recently I've been wanting to do a video game gameplay/commentary video similar to JonTron or AVGN. Yesterday I spent a bunch of time getting everything set up. I use the official PS3 wireless USB headset with a microphone.
What I did yesterday was to set my laptop's speakers as the default device and plug headphones in to activate the sound card, since Windows makes the USB from my headset be the sound card when it is plugged in.
I sent my microphone to the speakers, and the speakers to the Stereo Mix, and checked "Listen to this device" so I could listen to the game in my headphones while I played. It worked great yesterday, but today it won't.
I get a signal talking into my mic, but no matter what I do I cannot get "Listen to this device" to do anything for my microphone. Yesterday if I did that I would hear my voice in my headset (for testing). Once I set my speakers as the default playback device (as I did yesterday) I lose audio in my headset and can't get it back unless I set it as the default.
Is this a driver issue? I didn't change anything from yesterday when it worked. Sorry for the long explanation!

A:"Listen to this Device" option is not working; using USB headset

Guess I'm screwed. Oh well.

I have a Gateway GT5628 Core 2 Quad desktop. Vista Home Premium. It has on-board sound (which is enabled in the BIOS), and worked fine for the month I've had the machine until a couple of days ago. We had a power outage, and when the system came back up, I had a speaker icon in the system tray with a red X saying "No Audio output device is installed".

The system does not seem to realize that a sound card exists. It no longer shows up in device manager. Also, "Sound, video, and game controllers" is not showing as a category in device manager...was this removed in Vista, or is this part of my problem?

I talked to support at Gateway, and they told me to reinstall the drivers. As I expected, the drivers won't install because "Audio device not found". They then told me to do a Factory Recovery.....no thanks. I've spent too many hours tweaking this thing! Do you folks think a Factory recovery would do anything? To me this seems like a hardware problem. If the machine can't see the sound card now, it's not going to see it with a recovery either, right?

Plus, I already ran System Recovery once! The system blue-screened like crazy when I first got it. After installing all my software, I realized that SP1 was not installed. It would not install no matter what. I had to do a factory recovery, then install SP1, then re-install all my software!

FYI - I have the newest system BIOS installed.

Thank you for any tips!

A:Solved: No audio output device is installed - "Sound, video, game controllers" option

Sounds like the power outage did something not so nice to your PC (investing in a UPS is a good thing). It sounds to me like some sort of hardware issue at this point.

I would recommend opening the case up and seeing if any of the capacitors (little can like things) on the motherboard look like they are distended (look like they are bulging out or exploded), also do a sniff test and see if anything smells funny.

Last night I updated my computer to Windows 10.
I noticed after doing so my Gaming Rig (which has been out of commission since 2014) had a 32bit operating system despite having the capacity to run a 64bit.

I read online that I'd be able to create a boot disc or usb device using the Media creation tool and install that following a few easy steps, however, going into the advanced start up options, it looked a bit different than what I was led to believe.

(Expected)
(What I see)
(Note: This was just a reference image I found, I am running Windows 10, not 8.1).

My Disc Reader is working fine, so I'm unsure what I'm missing. I've had no luck searching for any answers so I thought I'd ask for my sanity's sake.

I've tried both a USB & and a DVD, both were able to hold the boot data created from the Media Creator, however I can't seem to get it to take.

I've attempted to open up the boot menu while loading, however when I selected to boot from BIOS using USB (HDD, ZIP, or otherwise), nothing would take. When I attempted to boot through CD/DVD, it only loaded windows 10 as normal, however my Desktop was broken (ie no icons outside of recycle bin), I couldn't access the start menu and Cortana has forgotten the hour or two we spent together asking me to initialize the function once more..

It wasn't a fresh install, however, and it certainly wasn't the 64 bit system.
Now, I'm at a loss.

First things first, thanks to all who can help.....

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

Right *deep breath*

The first thing that went wrong with my computer was to do with Mcafee On access scan. A week or so ago the little "V" sign stopped appaering in the system tray. Also, when I start the computer the red box that says "welcome to Mcafee" and which version you're running and stuff stopped appearing. I accessed the on access scan through program files and it told me that the on access scanner was enabled and working so I wasn't too fussed that it didn't appear.

Now, yesterday my computer went weird. The "run" option on the start menu disappeared and so did the "Turn Off Computer" red button. Both of them just disappeared. Task manager was also unavailable. When I pressed Ctrl, Alt and delete a box just popped up and said something like "task manager has been disabled by your administrator". I ran Virus Scan, Ad Aware, Spware blaster and Spybot Search and destroy. They all found various stuff on my computer and I got rid of it. After I did that Task Manager worked again, Which was good. However the "turn off computer" and "run" were still missing from the start menu. Well I googled around a bit and realised this guy had the same problem: http://www.bullguard.com/forum/10/qu...nd-_31844.html

He managed to resolve it by logging off and running a program called ewido. I downloaded the trial of ewido and ran it, following his instructions. It found loads of stuff but when I'd quarantined... Read more

A:Hi, computer is messed up. "Run" option missing from start menu, amongst other things

Please download HijackThis. This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory:C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\Run a scan and save the log file. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Post the HijackThis log as a reply to this thread. Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log and please make sure your word wrap is turned off in Notepad (under the Tools menu) before copying the log.

Hi, my computer crashed a couple hours ago out of nowhere and when it restarted itself I got the dreaded "BOOTMGR is missing" message. I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit. I put my Windows recovery disc in and entered the information for language, time and currency, and keyboard input. Then it tries to go directly to installing Windows. I don't have an option for repairing it. I can't afford to reinstall as I have way too much stuff to lose and it would be devastating. There should be an option after that first screen on the lower left so i can repair instead of install. I'm desperate and time is of the essence as I was working on something I need done for tomorrow. I tried to follow the steps here... http://cyberst0rm.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-to-fix-bootmgr-is-missing-in.html , but yeah, like i said, it doesn't give me an option to repair after that first screen. Please help, I'm starting to tear out my hair!
