I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How many of you use pendrives? (USB flash memories?)
I'm looking forward to buy one cause I really need it due to my work, I've been using an SD card with a pocket SD card reader but it doens't work anymore.

So, any suggestions regarding brands?
I hear kingston and sandisk are good ones, I don;'t want to buy a ****** pendriver cause they say they go blank if it;s too hot or go erase all your data after a while.

Ok, your turn now! thanks people!

Experiencing the same problem than

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/1044627-cant-boot-usb.html

looks like the issue is in the pendrive itself. I have two PNY pendrives, one 8GB and another 16GB. I can use YUMI or any other app to add a distro to the pendrive, format them, etc, but when booting the BIOS does not recognize them.

Tried in an old X31 laptop and in a new HP ProBook laptop with same (bad) result.

I though it was because of the big size but many people use 16GB pendrives for these purposes...

(BTW, tried also formating them and the distros were way smaller than 4gb...)

Greetings !
I apparently have some sort of shortcut virus on my pendrives. I used one on a public computer and when I reconnected that pendrive to my home laptop, all I coul see were shortcuts of the .ink kind. And when I double clicked on one it would open the cmd window and give me an error that microsoft.vbs couldn't be found. Later I connected another pendrive (one without the virus) and everything got converted ionto shortcuts again. I unchewcked the "hide essential windows files option" in folder options, so I am able to see my files on the pendrive along with the shortcuts. Both avg and malwarebytes have failed to solve this problem.my harddrives seem unaffected. Any help will be appreciated thanks !

A:some sort of shortcut virus on my pendrives?

reformat the pendrives.

my computer>rightclick on offending pen drive>format>fat32 quick format.

will erase EVERYTHING from the drives.

I suggest you do an advanced malware scan with something like ESET online scanner though, just to be sure you don't have nasties carried across.

Hi All,

I have an issue with my machine: I can't copy any files on pendrives or SD cards, unless I'll run Windows in Safe mode, everything works OK (all the pendrives or SD cards are working fine).

Tried to fix dll's, scanned for Virus even managed to format one pendrive (thought it was broken at first) but still couldn't copy any files.

The error I am getting: You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder.

I don't even have to mention that I am administrator?

Any ideas?

A:how to recover data from formatted pendrives

Hi,

If you want to recover the data from formatted drive, you need
special software and competencies. When you delete or even format a disk, the files aren?t really deleted, they are marked to be overwritten.

Since there?s no such software from Microsoft, you need search it yourself. Also please note third party may cause unexpected issue.

There?s a similar thread may helpful to you:

I use two notebooks. One running Win8.1 PRO (64bits), the other Win7 Home Premium (32bits).
I also have an external HD, and three pen-drives I use with both notebooks, as needed.
Some programs I use (a password manager, bkups, between many others) save data on these drives, and I need that the drive letters attributed to them DO NOT CHANGE no matter the notebooks they are connected to.
My problem is that the letters given to these drives keep changing when they are used on the notebooks and the programs can't find the paths to store or retrieve data from.
How can I make the drive letters to remain the same no matter the notebook they are being used with?
To choose the drive letters I use the Control Panel "Administrative Tools<>Computer Management<>Disk Management"

Any help will be welcome.

Cheers, and a Happy Holiday Season.

RELEVANCY SCORE 46

I recently purchased an HP ProBook 450 G3. I am using two passport compact 1 TB drives with my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports. In normal use there is no problem. However, when I copy a lot of data from one to the other (or from one to the laptop's internal drive) the drives keep disconnecting. I know this because first I will get a copying error saying either the source or the destination is missing. Then I will hear the "chime" that Windows makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. Then the autoplay window for the Passport drive will appear. It seems that it spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects. I can continue using it for a time afterward, but it always spontaneously disconnects at some point, always when I am doing large data transfers.

I wondered if I have a poor physical connection---the USB plugs seem a bit loose. I checked if there is any vibration or movement that could break the connection, but so far there is no evidence that anything is moving. The disconnection always happens when a lot of data is being transferred, while the drives are sitting completely still.

Any ideas how to debug this?

A:Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

This is a hard situation to diagnose from a distance IMO. "Loose" is somewhat subjective, and barring serious abuse the only kinds of usb connectors & ports I've ever seen fail mechanically are mini and micro USB2 types.

I'd be inclined to suspect the drives first, especially if they are from the same family and were produced around the same time (the "bad batch" phenomenon). Have you tried to reproduce the problem on other machines, or with different drives on your machine?

Hi all! Not something that hinders my daily life but why Windows7 forgets about the name of the renamed pendrives and external drives? I give them names so that I can know their content without opening them such as
"Films" or "Pix" or "Softwares". They were fine like this during a year or more and now from one day to the other everything lost its name and became E:, F: etc. Notably, these peripherals are connected the same way: the same cable to the same USB port. I re-renamed them again yesterday but they went back to E:, F: once again. That is so stupid.

A:Windows7 forgets the name of external drivers/ pendrives

Hello akofalvi,

This normally happens when other drives/applications starts to reserve specific drive letters/path. For instance Daemon Tools (Which mounts installation images) could reserve drive letters G-H, and thus causing your other ones to change letters and therefor loose any name given.

You should try to set them to something way back in the dictionary, like Z-X:

Go to Start > Search.
Type "diskmgmt.msc" > Hit Enter.
Rightclick your drives > Change drive letters/path.

This is what I do when I suffer these types of problem, which is often by the way, and I have not found a correct way of fixing so it is temporarily at best.

I go to Device Manager, then to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and I start uninstalling the Generic USB Hubs and then the other hubs, hoping not to nuke my mouse, if I don't then I go to the Action Tab and click on Scan for Hardware changes and it will rearrange the usb drivers and IRQs in hopes that they do not clash with each other. If it does nuke the mouse then I manually restart the PC and hope that it will solve the issue once I am back at the desktop.

There is no damage done to the PC, at least I have not seen any real damage but until I find a better way, this is what I have to deal with.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home Edition on it. All of my drives and devices connect externally and I access them through 3 different USB ports. A week ago I began having problems with my USB ports.

When I turn on my laptop, the devices (a mouse, keyboard and printer) initially are recognized and run well. Then I hear the noise from the comp as if I unplugged a device and my mouse, keyboard and printer are all no longer recognized by the comp. Sometimes I hear the noise as if I plugged them back in, sometimes I don't hear that noise but get an error message saying that my devices are not working properly and need to be replaced. All of my devices are in reality functioning properly. There does not seem to be consistency in when the USB ports stop functioning. During this time I am not touching the connections and at times am not even actively using the comp.

Do I have a trojan virus? or are my USB ports beginning to simply malfunction?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I can't do much with a laptop that cannot save a file to a disk or print a file. I have ad ware and spy ware removal tools (ad aware, spybot search and destroy, spyguard) as well as an updated firewall and antivirus (zone alarm suite) running on the comp. No major risks or problems have been found by these programs.
Thanks!

A:USB Malfunction

Try this: Go to start, control panel, system, click the hardware tab, and click device manager, click the plus next to Universal Serial Bus controllers, and right click and click uninstall on any USB root hubs. Then restart your computer and windows should detect your usb and reinstall the drivers.

Hello all,

Well, to get right into it, my PSU conked out. I shut down my computer (Start > Turn Off Computer . . .), it didn't automatically turn off like it normally does. So, I tried the power switch, nothing happened. Finally, I flipped the switch on the PSU. Obviously, it was off now.
The next day, I went to turn it on, and it didn't. I tested the power switch, it was fine, so the next thing to check was the PSU. Took it to a computer service store, they tested it, it was dead. I sent it back to the company, they sent me a brand new one. And that brings us to today.

I installed the PSU in my computer, hooked it up to everything (mb, harddrive, video card, CD-Rom, fans). I pushed the power button, the PSU lit up (it has a lighted fan on it) and the fan went on, this lasted about a second, then it shut off. Well, then I went through step-by-step:
- Connected only the motherboard to the PSU - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard and the larger fan - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, and the harddrive - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, and video card - turned on, stayed on, did not beep. (apparently it was beeping because there was no video output.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, video card, and plugged everything into the back of the computer - turned on, stayed on.
- Connected everything listed above, plus the smaller fan, turned an... Read more

A:PSU Malfunction

Although there are things like power surges and lightning strikes that could kill a PSU, there is really no reason to try to come up with a scenario for what happened. Often they just die and it can be without warning. I think you are saying that now everything works. If the new PSU suddenly quits then you may have a problem that needs to be figured out.

The fan set up looks pretty standard.

DEP processing is flaky. Setting /noexecute=OptOut and adding HP digital monitor to the exceptions list does not cause DEP enable for all processes.

No 'restart needed' popup is displayed....
?? CHROME, AVAST, FIREFOX all show DEP (permanent). All others DISABLED.....
?? setting /noexecute=AlwaysOn works, all processes DEP'd, BUT disallows HP digital monitor (can print, cannot scan or retrieve printer info).
I do have Administrator privileges but thought I noticed a popup (IIRC) re two items (processes?) not functioning, CIMV2? perhaps and one other. WBEMTEST checked for DEP 3 (OptOut), verified it was set (I forget the Superclass now, under root/cimv2).
Is this a Startup issue of some kind? Something not loading? GPEDIT under XP not helpful unless DISabling access to various options.
Thanks.... :-/

Hello everyone, first time poster, so sorry if I mess up ^^

Anyways, I just got a new laptop, specifically a Lenovo 80XS0086IX Ideapad 320-15ABR. Initially it all seemed fine, but as I used it I noticed several problems: 1) it cannot remain in sleep mode for long. After a while, it just switches off abruptly. I have tried several combinations of lid closed/open, power cord in/out, but eventually the result is always the same. 2) When powering it on after these shutdowns, the trackpad does not recognize multiple-fingers gestures, requiring a restart. 3) The disk usage frequently goes up to 100% despite no ongoing activity. 4) Sometimes, pressing the power button to power it on results in the disk starting, then abruptly stopping, then restarting again several times, before the laptop finally starts. 5) The system sometimes freezes for several seconds, even the cursor stops, only to resume any input movement later.

I have tried everything in my knowledge: I updated the BIOS, the HDD firmware, installed all Windows updates, fresh-installed Windows, but nothing seems to work (although the HDD thing apparently solved the "always 100%" problem). I ran both Windows in-built check-disk and third party programs to check for errors on the HDD, but none showed up. I'd be really glad if it was something I can fix at home, since I really need this machine to study, so sending it to be repaired/replaced back at Amazon is my very last option due to time. Hi everyone,

I'm having some strange problems with a Windows XP computer. I suspect some kind of virus/malware program/..., but am unable to find what it is.

The symptoms

Norton AntiVirus can not be started and is disabled at startup

Internet Explorer can be started normally, but it's not possible to reach any site at all. No error occurs, the blank page just doesn't change (about:blank is set as the home page)

Outlook Express can be started normally, but when trying to use it (i.e. checking for mail) it stops responding

When this was the case, I stopped alls stopable services with the standard task manager. After killing all instances of svchost.exe (7 on one count), I wait for Windows to pop up saying it has to reboot because the RPC service failed. I then abort the shutdown. The Windows XP look is gone after this and we're back to a more basic GUI, like the Windows 2000 one. The number of colors dropped as well.
Now, we've got a lot more functionallity:

Inernet Explorer works again, full Internet access

OE still doesn't seem to work right, however

Norton AntiVirus can be started
auto-update is disabled and cannot be enabled

e-mailscan is disabled and cannot be enabled

live update does not work

We had a similar problem and it turned out to be the APC PowerChute software. Disabling the service is a temp fix. Upgrading to the latest version is *supposed* to fix it. An acticle about the vulnerability: http://www.securitytracker.com/alerts/2004/Jul/1010745.html

Hello, my task manager got blocked saying it was blocked by the administrator when I'm am the only user on this computer. My desktop background was changed to a bunch of colors, and my virus program scanners kept saying I had trojans and my computer keeps trying to open these programs, such as svc.exe and odb.exe. Although I denied them thru McAfee security, they keep returning.Although I have scanned with AVG and Spybot search & destroy, these programs still keep trying to run and computer is still acting funny. Please advise.
Thank you

Do you by any chance have a wireless or wired microsoft mouse?

I have had a similar issue with my Wired Microsoft Mouse and its "Intellipoint" Driver

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895

Some claim this issue only occurs with the wireless versions of certain microsoft devices. I found that for me, It occur whenever Intellipoint 6.2 was installed. The Same version of Intellipoint also caused my Vista Sidebar to cease working... as detailed here http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/805947-solved-windows-sidebar-crashes-every.html

Anyway if you have a microsoft mouse/device that uses Intellipoint try removing the intellipoint software and checking if the issue still occurs. Or Try upgrading to the latest version of Intellipoint, which at the time of writing is 6.3

Ok, this is kinda complicated. It started this morning. I was on the web when Trend Micro popped up a message that wanted me to allow or delete a change to my system. The file name was called geede.dll..so I googled it and came across a couple posts. Well they started of by saying running Vundofix.exe...which I did and it came back clean. Then the user was told to download Combofix.exe to the desktop and disconnect the internet and disable any antivirus software (Trend in my case)...so far so good..then the computer restarted..this is where I get into serious problems.

First, the computer won't reboot getting stuck on the "Windows is Starting UP" screen for 10 minutes. So I manually restarted the computer. Once my desktop finally loaded, the task bar looked weird, and no longer showed any thing besides the start menu, the quick launch icons, and the clock, the time format is still changed to 24h time even though combofix said it would change that back... even though programs can still be opened they do not display on the taskbar.

I restarted and the same thing happened. So, I tried to perform a system restore by going to c:\\Windows\erdnt\Hiv-backup\erdnt.exe...it restarted the computer but nothing changed...i'm still stuck with the same problem...so at this point I am kinda worried and decide that I should probably back up everything just in case...but I can't copy/cut (ctrl v) files or drag and copy files to the desktop or anywhere on the computer ... So last night i was starting my computer and it gave me a blue screen at windows startup, the pc rebooted and it started to run an hardrive check(i think it removed some files), and then when it reached windows it gave me the "erro ao carregar(error in loading) c:|windows|migca6.dll" also i couldnt start mozilla firefox (using ie to do this post), msn, guitar pro 6, and some other programs. When i try to run any of those programs it gives me 0xc0000103 error. I don't know if i'm infected with any malicious content but my question is if it would be easier to format the pc instead of trying to solve all this problems...
P.S: It's strange but i can't active or do any windows automatic updates...
