I'm attempting to utilize the Asset Tag located in the Bios as the Host Name for the device.  I found in the forum how to script this, however, when I enter into the Bios I'm unable to update any of the System Information settings.  I've tried the Cntl+A but as soon as I hit it it just closes out of the window (window says "Press Any Key to Continue" at the bottom).  Any assistance would be appreciated. Matt

I have an HP Pavilion N5425 laptop, 14.1" LCD TFT (Toshiba) that works fine but 1 complaint:

About 1/4 way across the screen (from left to right) there is a thin blue line running from top to bottom.

It started very faintly but grew continually worse and is now a "permanent" feature.

The screen and laptop are fine otherwise, and I've been able to check all internal connections and and component seating. But the this hasn't corrected the problem.

I can replace any peice, but what part is it? Screen? Cable? Video Card?

When I change resolutions, the line stays in the exact same place on the screen.

When I unplug the cable from back of the screen (leaving the invertor connected) the screen remains on and show a plain white field with no blue line.

Using the video-out from the laptop, the line does not appear when hooked to a TVs video-in. (I do not have a proper monitor to try this with.)

Gently moving the cable seems to have no effect. But there is a good length of it held still under the power-button pcb when the laptop is re-assembled enough to turn it on.

Anyone have any experience like this and have an idea as to which part to replace? Any more suggestions to try?

take it to a laptop repair shop or get a good technician on the job because it'll take tools and training to fix the problem (laptops are very tricky to mess with).

Today I turned on my laptop and there is a blue line running vertically down the left side of the screen that I can not seem to get rid of .  I updated my video drivers and restarted the system but its still there. the lapptop is a week under a year old. HP ZBook 15 G2 Windows 7 NVIDIA Quadro K2100 M.  I never dropped the laptop or anything even rouch to it. I am very careful.  Please let me know what i can do. Thank you

Hi Kerberg, Can you try the following troubleshooting steps to see if it's hardware/software issue: - Connect the notebook to an external monitor to see if the line appears on the external monitor. - Go into BIOS by tapping "F10" key during boot up and see if the line appears on your main display. If it doesn't occur in BIOS, the hardware is good. We will have to focus on video drivers- onboard and discrete card. If the line appears on the screen, please call 800-334-5144, say notebook and then zbook through the promot. Thank you, -Tenzin

Hi,
I have a Samsung NP350V5C-A02UK and it is a great laptop. However, recently I have noticed a thin black border around the screen. I couldn't get a good picture with my camera but it looks very similar to this picture http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19434351.aspx however, it is just a little thicker on my screen. I am not sure if it was there since I bought the laptop however, I am pretty sure it wasn't. Could any one please tell me how to fix this or if this is normal on all laptops.

It could possibly be due to a faulty data cable and at worst the screen itself. Only solution would be to have it serviced by a Lenovo technician as it is most likely hardware related.

Hi,

Had IBM Thinkpad 600E fixed under warranty for faulty screen (which had ceased to work) - problem turned out to be faulty motherboard, and motherboard was replaced.
Since getting the laptop back, there is a thin (about 4mm) vertical grey band down the entire screen which obliterates whatever is behind it. This line is about a cm in from the left hand side.
the band comes on from start up...ie through the black POST screen, and if operating in DOS - the same. The correct drivers and refresh rates, etc were already loaded. OS is Win98SE.
Wondering if it could be caused by something simple like a loose cable?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm in Sydney & have to send the laptop back to Melbourne to be fixed....if it is something that has happened in transit, there's no point sending it back to have the same thing happen again. Any ideas much appreciated.

That could be a physical flaw in the screen, but hopefully it's just a loosened connection in the wiring involved.

It probably did happen in transit, since the repair techs would have noticed and called you if they saw it.

You could have a local tech try to check the wiring first, but you'll probably have to send it to Melbourne again. If so, use a bigger box and ship it wrapped in something big and soft like a down-filled winter coat or quilt. You might also want to insure the parcel for the round trip if your postal system or courier company offers the option.

Random Blue Thin/Dotted Lines on My HP Laptop Screen

I was recently transfering files to my new laptop, and uninstalling programs on my old laptop when I suddenly got thin blue lines randomly on my old screen in dark or black areas (see images). It is not in the same location on the screen depending on what I am viewing.

I hooked an external monitor to my laptop and the image is perfect. Another odd thing is when I screen capture the bluelines and view the image file on another PC, they do not show.

Any ideas?

hello there, everyone. What would cause my OS to be deleted? Computer was working fine, shut it down..did that normally. Next day turned it on, got the Dell Splash Screen, then a black screen that said this:

'TFGHT is Compressed'
press Ctrl, Alt, Del to restart.

I naturally thought that maybe those keys were compressed *somehow*, popped the keys off - nothing compressed. Took keyboard out, nada.

Had someone (supposedley a 'professional') come look at it, took hard drive out - Windows and all it's drivers were G.O.N.E.

Fortunately I saved all my pics to another drive, so he was able to get those backed off onto his external (portable) HD. He reinstalled Windows (7 32 bit) for me, he also scanned all my files - he said all my photos had viruses. Not sure how that happened, as I took them all with my own digital camera.

My question is - what would cause this? A virus - did one of my kids possibly inadverantly delete something when I left the room? If so, wouldn't that have kept Windows from operating at all after the deletion, not to mention keep it from normal shut down procedures?!?

It should be noted that this 'pro' partidtioned my hard drive when I got it back from Dell Service Center in Bucharest (the motherboard fried and they replaced it). *yes, I live in Romania, U.S. citizen - long story*

1. Start your computer from the Windows 7 installation DVD or Repair CD.
2. Select Repair your computer.
3. Load driver.
4. Go to Computer and right click drive where Windows 7 is installed.
5. Select Properties and uncheck "Compress drive to save disk space".
6. Close and restart the computer normally.

I have seen a number of posts in which people reported that they were unable to boot from the CD/DVD drive. Here are the most common reasons for such failures:
a) The poster failed to set the correct boot order in the BIOS.
b) The poster overlooked the prompt to press a key in order to boot from the CD/DVD drive.
c) The boot CD/DVD was not a boot disk or was damaged. Using it on another machine confirmed this.
d) Some BIOS setting was incorrect. Booting with some other boot CD/DVD.
e) The CD/DVD drive was damaged or unable to boot from a boot CD or DVD.
f) The machine had a hardware problem (e.g. a motherboard problem) that prevented it from booting in any mode

Recently I was shown a presentation about nComputing by some IBM people. I noted that it can have 6 screens and keyboards operating at the same time. Drawback is that we teach Turbo Pascal for Windows and it has problems operating. Yes, PAscal in this age, pretty lame but its our national curriculum.

We have a lotta Dell's. Does Dell give such technology?

I'm not sure what exactly is causing the BSODs on my laptop. This is a Dell Latitude 5500. I have been getting PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED BSODs for a while. Then yesterday I ran memtest and discovered one of my 2GB DIMMs was bad. After removing it, the PAGE_FAULT BSODs stopped. Now I am getting BAD_POOL_HEADER BSODs along with Bug Check Code 0x19 with 0x20 as the first parameter.

I already ran CHKDSK C: /F and it did find some errors which were then fixed. But I'm afraid the BSOD is going to come back during the most crucial moments.

The original Minidump in Blueview tells me the culprit is the ntoskrnl.exe but why?? It also mentions TCPIP.SYS and IGXPMP32.SYS. The OS is Windows XP Professional SP3 with 2GB of RAM currently.

Can anyone help?

Hey Everyone,

I work for a small business and we would like to implement thin clients for our employees. We work in a windows 2003 environment and we would like to add thin clients both to our intranet as well as allowing them to connect from a thin client from home. We currently have a system set up which allows them to connect through remote desktop from home. we have DNS setup and we believe to be working on our server. when pinging the host from a RDP connection we receive a reply. however when we connect a TC to the same router as the server we are unable to connect it to the domain that we have created (which would make sense because we are unable to ping the host name from the TC either.)

I know the basic principals behind this system but I can not seem to get it working. Is there something that I am not thinking about?

Any help you can give me would be great.

There were a few warnings with AVG(not free) about a Vundo so I downloaded mbam and vundofix both install and run but mbam gets stuck on a dll file in system32 folder and vundofix, as soon as you hit scan it says it didn't find anything. Literally instant. Also it looks like the desktop has changed as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Two IBM 8362-A52's and one NCD Explora 402

What could they be used for other than as clients in a business network?
Do they have any practical value as stand alone units or some how used in a home network?

I am trying to create a remote connection to my server at work (os ms windows 2003) - I currently have the vpn in place but the software I need to access requires a thin client. Do I need any additional hardware ? or can I run the software directly on the server to accomplish the same thing. also is there a certain type of thin client software that i should use? The software company said they have used "graph on" thin client before? I think that this company may be oob - because I can't find them. Any help would be appreciated!!! thank you

software usage has nothing to do with running a thin client.
the software needs to be installed/running from the server.

You ran the rras wizard and setup the vpn.
Now you need to logon remotely from any pc using remote desktop.
Test local RDP access before moving on to access from home.

We are testing a 420 thin client and all seems to work fine except when logged into an RDP session to our 2012R2 server farm, usb storage drives/keys are not recognised. Everything seems to be set ok on the thin client in Local resources and the usb key is recognised when doing a usb diagnose. Other usb devices are fine , wireless keyboards and mice dongles , etcAny thoughts on how to get them recognised in windows explorer

I know a lot about computers, but there are so many one can learn. Now, I am really unsure if this is the Sony Vaio laptop issue, or if it is Windows Vista issue. I will further explain myself, I purchased a Sony Vaio laptop last week. I have connected the laptop to the internet wirelessly. The router is a Linksys WRT54G, using automatic DHCP. All works fine and whatnot, but I have the trouble(s) of random disconnections. I'm familiar with disconnections, and I can narrow it down to, 'it is not my router or my modem.' So what is it? Provided, I have two screenshots;

this next one is in the "router configuration" category. If this has to do with my router, I have no idea what I can do to help it.

So right, I have read somewhere that setting it to Static IP will help, but I'm not familiar on how to set that up. Someone help me? I have tried once already, it did work, but I just want to hear another method. My method was going into the LAN and changing the IP there.

I don't know much about network issues either but maybe changing the auto tuning level and chimney offload might help. There are related links inside the tutorial worth looking at as well.

if the screenshot wont duplicate what your seeing, its 100% monitor related.

the panel itself may be on the verge of failing (or at the very least loosing the pixels in question forever), is it always in the same spot..??

how long have you had the monitor, & what is the exact model..??

Hello. Currently we are running about 40 T610 Thin Clients using the Win7 Embedded Image. I have made a simple configuration image by setting it up to automatically RDP to one of our servers in Kiosk Mode, and copying the image using the HP tool to a flash drive. I then booted each thin client from that USB drive to roll out the image. After a long and repetitive procedure of rolling out the configuration, we have started experencing some issues. Many of the T610s have started either bluescreening on startup - not allowing the unit to be used at all.Also, many of the thin clients experience a trust relationship issue. Both issues I fix by reimaging them completely. The issue is recurring, and doesn't show signs of slowing down at all.  We run Sophos Antivirus on all machines, and to prevent them from having to update too often, we run the clients with the write filter disabled. Can anyone advise as to what we need to do to prevent these systems from failing at the rate they currently are? Thanks.

Hi Coretex, A few things that may help us help you...-Are there any errors immediately after you image from USB? -When you get the blue screen, what message are you receiving along with it?-On a blue screened unit, are you able to boot into safe mode and access event viewer?  -Please elaborate on the trust relationship issue.  What are you accessing, and do you receive an error message? Potential Work Around:  For a fleet of 40, it may be helpful to set up HP Device Manager and start from scratch.  This will enable you to image all 40 units at once within about a half hour.  Start from a factory image, reconfigure it your kiosk image, and then deploy it to all your units.  The software is free and fairly easy to set up.-Chad

local group policy editor, but this is not available on the thin client.  So basically my question is how do I enable/configure remotefx on a thin client?  I believe it is set up on the server side.

We are having trouble with these units kicking us out randomly. If we swap the units from one connection to a different connection it seems to work for days at a time all 20 units are doing this.

I am trying to fix up a thin client that has stopped booting but everything I have tried hasnt worked with HPDM. Tried  factory resetting and get errors. Tried getting an image of another working t5550 and that is erroring I am new to using HPDM and am probably not doing things correctly Any help would be appreciated

Are you talking about the CE unit? Whenever you're using HPDM to send task, please make sure to update DM Agent on the Thin Client first - There is a default template named - Update Agent on your DM Console. Also, if you goes to HELP button from DM Console, you will see the admin guide and white paper which might help you get better understanding of HP Device Manager
