T470s Upgrades - HD/Memory

Q: T470s Upgrades - HD/Memory

Hi all, I'm looking in to a couple of upgrades on my system here. See attached for my memory specs. 1. In terms of the memory, I assume one out of the two are soldered on? Would it be okay to mix and match manufacturers and different size memory sticks? I'm looking for 12 or 16 GB total, I currently have 2 4GB installed. I checked crucial and it says that there are no available options for my machine. Does anyone have any good and affordable recommendations? 2. I would like to add an SSD in to my machine. Is the Samsung 960 EVO recommended? Any others I should look out for? Thanks!Dan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone
Sorry for the long message I just wanted to try and explain myself clearly any help would be appreciated greatly

I have a few questions about 2 towers in my possession that I am fixing for 2 friends I already got all the viruses and spyware out and cleaned the registry but they still load websites slow especially the A335W with only 256 Mb ram and I thought that this would help. One of my problem is that there are several versions of the Gateway 300S cel this one taking DDR 2100 or 2700 I currently am using DDR 2100u and 2700u together 1 x 256 and 1 x 512Mb would regular DDR 2100/2700 be fine?

As far as both machines go there is a concern of what the maximum capacity for the boards are, some sites say 1 Gb while others say 2Gb max I am not sure which one to believe I DO NOT want to have to ship back these memory cards once I get them. My friends need them back asap they are lost without their computers and they do not have the 3-400 for a low end new tower right now they live on a limited budget.

The specs are as follows on both machines

MFATXPNT 300s CEL (D845GL) aka D845GERG3 from Intel scan
Intel Celeron (2.0 I believe)
768 Mb ddr 2100U memory
windows XP home SP3

So I've got this awesome laptop, right? It's about that time of the year when people's things get better from a return on an investment. So, I'm wondering how much of my laptop I can change. I keep finding conflicting things on the model specs of my specific laptop. Some sources say there are two sockets for memory and one is soldered, while another will say it's 1 and it's soldered, and yet another will say it's just one and it's able to be swapped. I've also heard of people putting i5 cpu's on there motherboard (most sources say the cpu is soldered) and finally I'm always up for more hard drive space so if I throw a sata or an ssd drive in this is it going to void my warranty? Also taking tips for all of the above, looking at Kingston hyper x ram, a Samsung ssd, and of it's cool with Lenovo possibly an i5. Any help, feed back or tips are highly appreciated and as long as it keeps me within warranty may be considered. Thank you!

HI. The upgradable RAM is up to 16 GB, although on some models it may vary 8GB, it would be advisable to run this software and tell you which memory is supported and technical features. http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/systemscanner The memory you mention may not be compatible, as we speak of memories of gamer equipment. If you also want to update the processor this is not possible, it is integrated (soldered) on the motherboard. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-13-a100-x360-Convertible-PC/7234922/model/7399004/do... Best Regards.

Hello all,
I've upgraded my Dell XPS 8300 recently with some new memory and two hard drives. My old memory was at 8gb with 4 dimm slots each with 2gb 1333mhz DDR3-1333 PC3-10600, CL9, 240 pin, 1.5 V.
But I bought 2 sticks of 4 gb ram at 1600mhz DDR3 PC3-12800, CL11, 240 pin, 1.5 V. And I installed them in slots 1 and 3. Now I thought everything would work fine but lately I've been getting random crashes on my pc ever since the installation, some days I get 2-3 crashes some days I get none. I know it's not my hard drives that I installed because I disabled them and the error still occurs. So I know that these errors have to be coming from my memory.
So I'm wondering are there compatibility issues between the two different ram? Also I'm wondering can my motherboard even run the new memory that I bought? My motherboard model is the one that I got when I bought the Dell XPS 8300 which is 0Y2MRG. My CPU is the Sandy Bridge Core i5-2320.

A:XPS 8300 memory upgrades

I put 4×4 GB Crucial models in mine and its been fine. If theres a problem with RAM the preboot diagnostics should pick it up however you may want to reseat all your RAM modules and really push them firmly in. Theres also the graphics card because you need to remove it to get to the RAM. Make sure that's really tightly in and not hanging slightly loose.

some t440 motherboards have onboard memory - some do not.  If your board has onboard memory, you have a free slot.  If you do not have onboard memory, you have a 4gb dimm which can be replaced by a 8gb dimm.

Hello. I have a serious question that needs to be answered regarding memory upgrades and Windows 7.

I have the ASUS P5Q motherboard with the Core 2 Quad Professor (Q9550). I also have Windows 7 Professional, 2 licensed copies. Now, on one hard drive partition I have Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit. On the same system on another hard drive partition, I just installed Windows 7 64-Bit. Now, right now I have a total of 4 GB of the CorsairXMS2 memory installed [DIMM-RWIN2x4096-6400C5 -or- Corsair 4 GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2-6400) Dual Channel Memory, 240-Pin, Non-ECC, Unbuffered] on this system. No issues so far with 32-Bit & 64-Bit versions of Windows 7 with the 4 GB of RAM. Now I plan to buy another 4 GB of the same memory modules to have a total of 8 GB. I know the 8 GB is rated great for the Windows 7 64-Bit. Now, what about the 8GB for the Windows 7 32-Bit??? Any issues having that much memory (8 GB) for the Windows 7 32-Bit??? I mean I am not about to take out EACH TIME the extra 4 GB from the motherboard when I boot into Windows 7 32-Bit.

Please reply.

Thank you!

A:I Have A Question Regarding Memory Upgrades In Win7 32&64-Bit.

Hello Montecarlo,

The 32-bit Windows 7 will only recognize up to 4 GB no matter how much you have installed, so you will not need to remove any RAM when you boot into the 32-bit Windows 7. The extra 4 GB will just not be available.

Of course when you boot into the 64-bit Windows 7, all 8 GB will be available.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I work in the Communications department of a university. They are looking to buy memory and hard drive upgrades, 5 each. Here's some info:

-128MB RAM (qty. 5)
-20GB hard drives (qty. 5)

What brands would you recommend? I heard Crucial Memory is good:

128MB RAM for $44.09, I heard their product is good. Do you agree? What about for hard drives:

20GB 5400RPM Ultra DMA/ATA 100 for $59.00??
Seagate 20GB 5400RPM for $68.00??
20.5 GB - WD205EB 5400RPM Protg OEM ATA100 for $71.00??

Any suggestions? Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] with any suggestions, or if you need more info.

Thanks for any help

A:memory & hard drive upgrades

Hi, this is just my opinion, but here goes

First, the memory. Yes, Crucial is a very good choice for memory. Before you buy, be sure it is the correct type for what your requirements are ( use their Memory tool on the home page). Also, another good memory maker is Kingston. However, I do not believe that they sell directly to the public, so you would have to buy through a reseller. The important thing about buying memory is to be sure it has a lifetime warranty. This will protect you down the road, in cases of failure etc. under normal conditions

All of the Hard Drives you listed are good drives. I have no particular choice between them, Though I know from personal use that I have used Western Digital Hard drives without one failing on me. The only thing I see with the particular ones you have chosen is that they are all 5400 rpm drives. These drives will be a bit slower on seek and access, simply because of the speed of the platters ( 5400 rpm). If you have the budget, I would pay a bit more for a 7200 rpm drive.

Another Hard Drive maker to consider is Maxtor. They also make good drives.

Hope this is helpful to you

I just purchased a 15-af173nr  and I want to look at upgrading the memory on this system and adding a second hard drive. I have not been able to find anything on line for this. Can someone please advise what is the max RAM this system can handle and what types of hard drives are available for this system. thanks

A:15-af173nr harddrive and memory upgrades

You have the AMD version which is pretty limited for upgrades. There are 2 memory slots but they are hard to get at and the warranty is jeopardized by doing so. Same with the hard drive. There is only a single SATA bay for hard drives. No M.2 slot for a second drive. Putting a 2d hard drive in an optical adapter is possible but not generally a good solution.  This is the Service Manual: Manual Start on p. 37 to see what you would be getting into to upgrade. To get the best performance out of it you would want to add another 4 gigs of RAM to make 8 gigs. No need for any more than that. And you would want to toss the 5400 rpm spinner hard drive and install an SSD. Happy to help as long as we go into the process with open eyes. A lot of people run for the hills (or Geek Squad) when they see what is involved.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I am looking to pull the trigger on a T470 and have a question. It seems the best value is to buy it more bare bones and upgrade on my own. I'm slightly confused on upgrading the HD though. If I get it with the 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA3, what can of hard drive can I replace it with? Does it have to be an SSD or can it be an OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe? Also, if I get it with 8 GB of memory, can I put another 16 GB into the other empty slot? Or does it have to be 8 GB as well to match?

This recent memory upgrade is the third one I've tried in six months. It feels like I can't buy new memory without at least one stick being bad. I'm getting pretty crazed.

Any thoughts or ideas? I replace the RAM properly, and it seems unlikely that I'm getting a DOA stick every time I order new memory. Thanks for any help.

I have a 2016 HP 15-AF113cl laptop.  I am not certain if that is a Pavilion or not. My questions are: 1)  What options are available for upgrading the memory from the existing 6gb of memory? 2)  Would it be possible to add a second hard drive (SSD) on a caddy in the DVD bay?  If so, what parts and steps would need to be taken?  (I realize this may not be a standard authorized HP procedure - my warranty has expired and I do not want to extend). 3)  The only problem I seem to have is that the drivers for the WiFi card seem to crash the system on occasion (bcmwl63a.sys exception not handled error).  I have been rotating through the available drivers at considerable expense of time.  Is there a better performing and more stable wifi card upgrade that is possible?  (current wifi card is a Broadcom Model BCM943142Y)

Hi, Wlecome to HP support forum. Looks like your plan is to buy a new machine but allow me to answer your questions 1. RAM: Max is 8GB (2 x 4GB), currently it has 4GB + 2GB2. SSD: Put SSD to the ODD bay using a caddy/kit is a very bad move because it will not run faster and won't be able to boot. My suggestion: replace existing HDD with SSD and put old HDD to the place of the ODD using 9.5mm caddy3. Wireless card: You may be able to replace the wireless card. Regarding the 3040 MT. The I-5 6500 version. The 3040 MT lists a PSU of 240 watts. I want to add a GPU. The Dell Social Media Support guy (from the Dell forums) said that the Nvidia GT 745 was one of the video cards tested.
Nvidia's site lists the GT 745 as a 55 watt GPU with a 300 watt PSU requirement for that 745 card. Yet the Dell team found no problems with the GT745. Can someone explain this for me?
I want to upgrade the GPU, but do not want to wreck something by doing so. The GPU card I really want is the GTX 1050 which is a 75 watt card but all other parameters are the same as the 745. Mechanically it will fit perfectly. The only issue is the wattage.
Second, is there some listed PSU upgrades available? Or perhaps adapters for aftermarket PSU's? How difficult is it if I wanted to upgrade to a more powerful PSU? Does Dell have that option with this computer?
I spent 32 hopeless minutes on Dell's support phone line listening to people read out specs from the sales brochure. Nobody, even in so called "tech support" could answer the questions.
Can ANYONE here please help me on this?

A:Optiplex 3040 MT Mini Tower Question about PSU upgrades and GPU Upgrades

Our OEM (original equipment manufacturer) customized GeForce GT 745 X61TN is not the same card as the retail GeForce GT 745. The memory and clock settings may differ. That is the difference. But it is easy to remove our 240w PSU (power supply unit) and install a higher wattage PSU. Read through the Owner's Manual. It has instructions on how to do this. The retail Geforce GTX 1050 needs at least a 300w PSU. Another 3040 owner will need to post a retail PSU that has worked.

Hello I would like to know if its possible to add a 1TO sata HDD with the T470s ?Can I use both with the Disk SSD 512 Go, PCIe -NVMe OPAL2.0Thanks

A:Can I add second HDD with the T470s

I'm only seeing that there's one slot for:

M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s
M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/s

To answer you question, you can't use both the SATA HDD and PCIe hard drive since there's only room for a M.2 SSD.

If you're looking for a ThinkPad that has both space for both, I suggest looking at the ThinkPad P50 with up to 3 drives.

Hope that helps

There is a lot to like about the T470s. However, after a few weeks use, there are some things that need to be addressed.I am not a fan of the minimalist approach to system design. eg removing almost all of the indicator lights is not helpful. There is no CPU activity light. There is no hard drive/SSD activity light. It is hard to know what is going on without this feedback. Also missed, not as much, are the WiFi and Bluetooth radio on/off lights. It's a few LEDs so it's not a cost issued. Super minimalist designs are not necessary better designs. The front edge of the palm reset is too sharp. When just using the track pad and buttons, the edge of my palms rest right on the edge. It is very uncomfortable over time. There is no reason for this sharp of an edge execpt some misguided idea of design. My old X220i and T520 didn't have this problem.I am also not a fan of the redesigned keyboard. This issue has been well documented, so I won't say any more than the moved page-up and page-down keys are physically harder to use in there new position by the cursor keys. It's clear that Lenovo needs to spend more time with real users early in the design process. There is no reason to go backwards.

When I customised it, I selected an i7-7600u and that was on the ordered detail. I have emailed them and awaiting for there response. Calling them routed me to a voicemail. Anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestion?

Hi - I have a T470s that came with 8GB RAM onboard. I've added another 16GB - DDR4 2400MHz - but the computer can't see the extra RAM - it still thinks there's only 8GB. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, Paul

A:T470s can't see extra RAM

What is the spec for the DDR4 RAM that you are trying to use on the T470s? I have 8gb on the planar and an additional 8gb DDR4 module for a total of 16gb. No issues with recognizing the memory, but I am having a mysterious power on problem (AC Adapter boot up only) that is forcing me to replace the system.

New T470s received yesterday will not power on until the battery levels are > 75% charge! BIOS level is 1.10 (but this also happened on BIOS level 1.07). Plugging in the AC adapter makes no difference other than the unit charges, but will not power on.

I've tried to use the emergency reset procedure, but that produced no change in behavior.

I know that the X1 had a similar issue last year, but I never saw this with a T460s (which I also own). Ideas here? Other than the power on issue, the unit is functioning correctly. Diagnostics do not reveal any defect in system board, memory, SSD, or anything else.

Suggestions? Comments?

Just received this laptop and I'm having issues with the WWAN device, Sierra EM7455. Have a SIM card in, and sometimes it works. But it is very finicky. Sometimes the device wont' start (error code: 10). Sometimes it says 'no service'.  And like I said, sometmes it works fine for no apparent reason. Is this a hardware issue? Or am I missing some key setup step? I have all the latest drivers installed and it is Verizon SIM. Any help would be much appreciated.

I just got my brand new T470s. Excellent machine, great screen, very portable, I am a happy guy.Having said that I realize the basic CPU I chose, the new i5 7200U might not have been a good choiceAs a matter of fact it's a bit weaker than the i5 I had on my 5 years old t430 So, can I upgrade my CPU ? Thanks

On the configuration screen for the t470s under power cord section there are 2 options.  Both option show 45W AC adpter 2 pin BUT the top option shows US(USB Type C).  Whats the difference I thought the t470s has a usb c charging port?

A:t470s charger

Looks like it can charge via classic rectangular slim-tip port or USB-c port:

Hi,I have gotten two BSOD in the time period of a week.As I can tell it's because of two different things.BSOD no 1BugCheck 9F / DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE /It indicated to the Intel drivers or pci.sys as in the pcie buss, I did replace the NVMe drive as I either way was upgrading to a 500GB 960 and after that this BSOD did not happen agian. It could been fixed because of the replacing of the driver or it could have been fixed due to re-installing windows 10.I don't know. Here is the dump file, aldo it's 100MB, I hadent activate smal dump files here yet.https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ALEbHSeENSTHXV0&id=E725C508213387D9%2120281&cid=E725C508213387... BSOD no 2PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREAThis one is a little tricky it does indicate to NTFS file system and also volume sys drive. But it also indicate to a 3rd party driver "Probably caused by : mrcbt.sys"And it also indicate that mrcbt.sys and other drivers did have issue to write to the memory. This did happen when I did change partion table on my external harddrive in the disk manager, the BSOD did littlery happen when I did klick on the "finish" button to extend the partition on the drive so it could be just that my external harddrive did have a corrupte file system as the Event viewer did flag about it 4min before the BSOD did accure. Aldo according to Microsoft 0x50 is because of faulty hardware and they are blaiming the memory (could bee harddrive or ram) and as I have been replacing the NVMe already I jus... Today I tried for the first time to use an USB stick on the t470s. Those on the right are tight as hell. I mean to use to hand, one to block the laptop and the other to remove the USB key. Usually, only the force of one hand's finger is needed. Never needed to hold a laptop to remove an USB key. do you guys have the same issue ?

I've visited optician and said that everything is ok. After I use new display for some time, then I have a problems even with the old ones ( TN ). Anybody could explain that ? Michal

Does the T470s support DisplayPort Alternate mode?  https://www.displayport.org/displayport-over-usb-c/ This would allow it to support dual displayport monitors using an adapter such as: https://www.amazon.com/CHOETECH-Thunderbolt-Compatible-Resolution-Chromebook/dp/B01MT8TT9B/ref=sr_1_... Alternatively since the T470s has Thunderbolt 3 Usb-C,   could it possible support Plugable's Thunderbolt 3 line of adapters?   Currently compatibility currently lists Thinkpad P series: http://plugable.com/thunderbolt-3/support

Microsoft support can't give any solutions, and Lenovo support ask me to contact Microsoft... Can it be a driver error?

Hi everyone, As you may know the HDMI output on T470s supports 4K resolution at only 30 Hz. This makes mouse mouse movements quite choppy and at least for me frustrating. To use a higher refresh rate we have to use some kind of a USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter.  Here I'm posting a solution how to get 4K working at 60 Hz using Anker Aluminium USB C Type C to HDMI Converter, running on Windows 10. By default the Anker USB-C to HDMI converter on this laptop goes up to 4K (3840x2160) at only 30 Hz and it's not possible to increase the refresh rate any higher. To squeeze 60 Hz out of it you need to do a bit of work.  The solution:- right click anywhere on your Desktop and select Intel Graphics Settings- click on Display- click on Custom Resolutions and select "Yes" when presented with the warning- make sure that in the drop down menu, in lower left corner of the window, you select your 4K external monitor, not the laptop's main screen- type 3840 for Width, 2160 for Height and 60 for Refresh Rate- the important part: you need to select some other Timing Standard from the drop down menu and not the default "GTF". Because if you select "GTF" the application will tell you that the custom resolution exceeds the bandwidth limitaions and it will not allow you to add it. I used the "CEA 861" Timing Standard in my case. Perhaps other timing standards my also work, it may depend on your monitor, I'm not sure. My monitor is LG 27UD68P.- click on ... Read more

I've just gotten my hands on a new T470s and I'm having trouble getting Bitlocker working on Windows 10 (Enterprise). Everything seems fine, Bitlocker's hardware test succeeds, but on reboot Windows throws an error saying "The Bitlocker encryption key could not be obtained from the TPM". I've cleared the TPM, disabled and re-enabled it, everything I can think of. We are a shop full of T-series laptops and have at least a dozen T460s machines where Bitlocker works just fine. Any thoughts?

Hello, I was using my laptop during the day without any problems. When I came home the touchpad wasn't reacting anymore. By not working I mean:- Mouse won't react to movements on the touchpad- trackpoint still works- buttons do work- when I press (not touch) on the touchpoint windows registers a left click - A restart didn't fix it.- Windows installed updates including a synaptics touchpoint driver update- I downloaded the most recent driver from lenovo support page and installed itAll of this didn't help at all. I noticed that when I manually deleted the driver the touchpad worked again. obviously without the driver two-finger scrolling etc did not work but I could move the mouse and perform left clicks by touching the touchpad. Also lenovo companion didn't show any available updates. Currently installed driver is version 19.3.4.117, version 19.3.4.99 (the one from the lenovo page) did not work either. Windows shows me today's installed updates:- security update KB4053577- cumultative update KB4054517 Windows is a Win10 Pro version 1709. I am pretty lost here because I heavily rely on a working touchpad.

Hello all, Does anyone know if the T470S supports both the SATA and PCIe on the same box?     I'd like to save a bit of money and order a laptop with the base SATA SSD, then upgrade it to a higher performance PCIe SSD later.    But if it one or the other on a single laptop, then I'll have to order the PCIe now. Thanks in advance. Bob
