Update Microsoft (Windows XP) programs manually?

Q: Update Microsoft (Windows XP) programs manually?

So, Secunia has just told me that the versions of Microsoft Outlook 2002, Word 2002, and Excel 2002 I have on my computer (Windows XP Home SP3) are unsecure and need to be updated. Secunia provides direct download links to Microsoft for these updates, but there are some hassles (I know! Hassles? With Microsoft?!).First, it opens IE -- it apparently won't work with Firefox. Second, all the update links lead to a page that signs me up for a Microsoft Update service that gives Microsoft even greater access to my PC.Unless it's absolutely necessary, I just have no desire to provide more access to my computer to a bunch of strangers.Does anyone know if there's a way to update these programs without signing up for a service? Even today, not all computers are hooked up to the internet -- I figure there must be a way to just get the updated files. Thanks!Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Preferred Solution: Update Microsoft (Windows XP) programs manually?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Update Microsoft (Windows XP) programs manually?

Try this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enThat's the service pack... so it updates the whole shi-bang. If this wasn't what you were talking about, just reply and I'll keep looking. Hope that helped!

Microsoft: Manually Installing Windows 10 Creators Update Could Break Down PCs

Microsoft pushed the go-ahead button for Windows 10 Creators Update on April 5, allowing experienced users to manually download the new OS version on their PCs.

One week later, on April 11, Microsoft also started the official rollout of the Creators Update as an automatic upgrade via Windows Update, but in this case, the release takes place gradually, and some users need to wait more than others to receive it.

As a result, more and more users are tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update manually, but Microsoft says that you shouldn?t do this unless you are an experienced user.
Critical issues
The reason is that the Creators Update might be hit by compatibility issues, either hardware or software, and when you manually install it, the upgrade process bypasses any checks that could prevent critical problems. On Windows Update, on the other hand, Microsoft is only making the Creators Update available for your system when it is 100 percent sure that all problems are gone.

?It?s important to note that when customers use the Software Download Site to manually install the Creators Update they bypass many of these blocks,? Microsoft explains.

?Therefore, we continue to recommend (unless you?re an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you. When your device becomes eligible for the C... Read more

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

Windows XP SP3 [32-bit] Internet Explorer v8

Microsoft/Windows Update works when you let it "automatically" install updates - i.e. Click on "Turn Off".

It fails when I try to do it manually.

NOTE: It is only the install that fails - "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". I have no problem selecting and downloading updates.

I have tried a number of ideas posted here and elsewhere. But, so far, nothing has resolved the issue. This is not a result of a repair, serivice pack update, etc. I tried Dial-a-fix also, but it did not work either.

I want to manually update Win7 -- automatic updates are disabled
- I got caught twice last year with bad updates
- I am not having any problems with Windows
- trial (3rd day) of Kaspersky Internet Security, "Safe Money" (banking feature) is nagging me to update Windows

In "Windows Updates" window I have already clicked "Check for Updates"

If I click "Install Now" will it also automatically update Windows ... as well as updating the updater
- never have I seen "update the updater"

I do not want a total auto-update of Windows

Once the updater is updated, how would I do a selective manual update of Windows by each KB in turn ?
MS tute Install Windows updates in Windows 7 is not clear enough for me
- I vaguely remember a list of KBs that I could selectively install (or ignore) one at a time.
- the last manual Win7 update I did was in 2013

A:Update windows manually, how ?

This is just an update to the updater. It will not change your manual settings to automatic. You can continue to apply manual updates once the updater is updated.

Windows Security is telling me my Automatic Updates are off and I am unable to turn them back on. I get a message saying to go to Systems in Control Panel to change setting. However, in Control Panel Auto Updates are already on.
Tried turning off auto updates in CP and attempting to install manually with no luck. A few other screwy events but trying to stick with one problem at a time as mod suggests. Tried reinstalling IE8 (not sure why) but no change.
Running Windows XP. I am NOT computer savvy so any suggestions need to be spelled out step by step - even the seemingly obvious ones.
I have run Malwarebytes and use Avast Antivirus and MS Security Essentials. A long time ago I ran a program called Tweak now registry cleaner. I confess to being the click-happy and ignorant user in the chair that probably created my problem myself in an effort to keep my PC secure.
Thanks for any advice.

That important update that failed really wasn't so IMPORTANT, I guess.
Anyhow, I wish to try to install it. Can't find how.
I didn't put this post in the Windows Update forum because I'm not ready to troubleshoot yet. Just want to find out how to install the failed update.

I've been experiencing with Windows Update KB976902 causing printer spooler errors and repeated blue screen system crashes on multiple hard drives for this one system.  The printer spooler errors first occurred
back in 2010 right after an automatic download and install of Windows Update KB976902.  I personally have done extensive online research over the years to source a permanent resolution to this problem and the final conclusion is to permanently delete/
remove/ uninstall Windows Update KB976902.  Problem is, once this update is installed, it cannot be removed.  Now I have made many aggressive attempts to remove this update like executing command prompt "wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976902"
will not uninstall the update.  A system restore to an earlier point will not remove the update.  Complete deletion and fresh reinstall of the Windows OS will not remove this update either.  I even attempted to tinker around in regedit to find
and remove, as you expect, my knowledge of navigating around in the OS registry is extremely limited thus I'm incapable of removing the update using this method.  I made several exhausting attempts to locate the file destination via command prompt and
really couldn't figure that out.  Cannot locate the folder/ file location of this update anywhere on the OS other than the Programs and Features location.  View Installed Updates does not provide any option for uninstall.

A:How to manually remove Windows Update KB976902

Hi,
According to the KB below information, there is no way to uninstall this update. Because it's a hotfix used to fix system problem, this hotfix would replace plenty of system file with new edition.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2533552
For your problem, we can try to fix printer problem by upgrade its driver edition, etc.
For BSOD problem, it would be better to collect minidump file, we'll make further research with this problem by using dump file.
please refer to the contents of the link below for more details and provide the dump files to us.

On the other hand, it's hard to say it's KB976902 problem. You can try to perform a Clean Boot to check whether this problem caused
by 3rd program or service start with system. Refer to the link below for more details.

2 problems.

1) I disabled Windows Update in Services to avoid having to deal with the bullsh* updates. Later I put it on "manual" instead of "disabled". Today I find that my computer is "installing updates" WITHOUT a) my permission and b) without notifying me that there were updates to install. This thrashed my hard drive with near constant 100% usage from something called Windows Modules Installer Worker. I killed the process, rebooted after some Adobe Reader issue (unrelated....I think). Upon selecting "restart" Windows informs me that it is updating my system WITHOUT my permission. It continues, updates, says finished, restarts to 0%, finishes, reboots.

Upon restart--which takes FOREVER by the way without the "updating" message, when it used to only take a few seconds to boot up--I go to Services where I find Windows Update is set on "running". Even though I manually stopped it, and set it to "manual trigger" start....

2) After restart when I am in Services to kill Windows Update and set to manual--again--I see something called Update Agent, set to run automatically. I do not remember this service from before, and I have no idea what it does different from Windows Update. I set it on manual as well.

What does Update Agent do differently from Windows Update? They are listed as separate services

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

I tried to run Windows Defender Offline 64 bit on a friend's laptop using WDO installed on a USB stick, but it refused to scan the disk because it insisted on getting Updates to its definitions before scanning.

So either the definitions on the USB stick were too old or not present at all or WDO couldn't find them. I had not run WDO from that USB stick before.

But the laptop had just a Wi-Fi connection and WDO doesn't work over Wi-Fi.

I have successfully used the 32 bit WDO USB stick on my own Desktop without such a problem, probably because my Desktop is connected to the Internet via a LAN.

I checked another thread on this subject on SevenForums, here:

Defender Offline on DVD failed because no internet connection

I disagree with the statement by karlsnooks that WDO does not need an Internet connection. This was confirmed here:

defender offline cannot update no internet connection - Microsoft Community

However, if someone knows how to manually download the virus definitions and copy them to a USB stick, I would be very interested.

I suppose I could download and create another WDO ISO file on my hard drive and see what's in it, try to identify the definitions and update the equivalent files on the USB stick... but that would be very much trial and error. If someone has actually done it, please let me know.

Hello there,This is my first post. I believe I have a virus issue - Win32/Alureon.A exists on my PC. I understand that this may be responsible for the re-direction issues I am experiencing when using Google. What happens is that I select a particular website from the returned Google search list and Google redirects me to another website. In trying to fix this I went to windows update to make sure I was up to date. I was unable to manually execute Windows Update. Then I realised that I had not been getting the relevant updates.I then activated Windows Defender. I had it turned off as I use the AVG Anti Virus software protection (free version). I then did a scan using a Microsoft product "something scanner" which took hours to run. It did identify the presence of Virus:Win32/Alureon.A . When I looked this up I could see it was related to my "re-direction issues" with Google.I am unable to get the Windows update to work properly. I had Telus Security Services (and Telus Security Advisor) as my anti-virus program and I tried to remove it via the Control Panel but they don't appear in the list. There's an icon at the bottom right of my page which reads that, "Telus Security Services are loading now, please wait". The problem is I'm trying to do a System Restore and it keeps failing and it could be that my anti-virus or firewall is blocking this from happening. I also have Browser Safeguard but I turned all the settings off to do the System Restore. Is there a way I can see if Telus Security Services/Advisor is lurking around somewhere on my computer and if so, can I remove them manually?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me with this.

1. backup the current registry
2. backup the file associations
3. backup the win.ini and system.ini files
4. backup the program folders
5. delete all the registry entries from the registry pertaining to the programs i want to remove
6. edit to take out any entries in the win.ini and system.ini pertaining to the programs
7. delete the program folders.

i had to recently restore my system, and along with that, comes all these sh1t programs.

I'm not sure how to exactly phrase this but I'll be as detailed as I can be. I own a Toshiba laptop that runs on Windows Vista . Just about 30minutes ago while I was browsing online a pop up came up saying update .exe or something like that and I accidently clicked no. I thought it was a pop up scam that came off the website I was on but then literally right after my AVG popped up saying threat detected and I moved it to vault immediately.

The issue is that right after I moved it to vault the icons on my desktop somehow got messed up. I usually have the windows sidetask bar open and visable but it disappeared. Also along the bottom of the screen next to the time I usually have atleast 6 programs there(Avg, cleaners, etc. ) but theres only the time , internet conn, batt life that's there now.

SO the main issue I found was when I went to open up Mozilla( I only use this ) that it pops up with "open with" then a list of a few programs and then I can browse to find other programs ... I located a FEW of the programs and matched them up but I have to do this for every single thing I open ex. messenger , avg, itunes, anything. AND the thing is every time I click for the program to run it pops up "open with" then I chose . EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I know theres obviously something wrong... I have no idea on how to fix it . I've only managed to get a few programs that I use to work (ex. MOZILLA. )
Is there any advice on how to fix this??? Is this very complicated?? ... Read more

I also noticed that some of the desktop icons had a small shield on them and when I tried to open them, they would not open and a window would open stating "specified module could not be found". I tried uninstalling some programs and they would not install. Then yesterday, I had to remove the Vista Home Security 2011 malware, which somehow got through McAfee and my Malware security. I need some help to get these programs running and/or to clean up a corrupted drive.

I have a folder in my Programs menu (start orb, All Programs) that I call Maintenance. In it I have links to programs and folders I like to access for monthly tasks like backing up, etc. I would like to manually arrange the icons so that the ones I do every month are on the top of the list, and the ones (such as Backup and Restore) that I need only occasionally, are lower down the list. Is there a way that I can arrange them? I have opened up the programs menu in Explorer (for all users), but re-arranging the icons in Explorer seems to have no effect on their appearance order when I view the folder via the Start orb. How can I arrange these icons manually?

A:Rearranging icons in Programs folders manually

This actually doesn't change how they are displayed in the start menu, unfortunately.

They are displayed alphabetically.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I haven't found a way to do this in Edge, but I did find a work around. I don't know why they've made things so hard! What I did is open Internet Explorer (you may have to search for it, but it's still on Windows 10), navigate to the address you want to favorite, add the site to your favorites in IE, go into the IE favorites and right-click on the one you want to change the URL for, choose properties, then edit the URL and save or apply. Next you'll just import the favorites again in Edge and it should pop up. Hope this helps!

You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010...lbar-update.ars As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does.

Microsoft Announces New Monthly Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft rolls out new cumulative updates every month on Patch Tuesday, including here not only security fixes targeting vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and installed Microsoft software, but also OS improvements and other tweaks refining the overall experience.

Today, the company announced that it would publish a second cumulative update for businesses running Windows 10 Creators Update, this time including non-security fixes.

Microsoft says that although it wants to release one such cumulative update every month (in addition to the security release on Patch Tuesday), there might be cases when more than a single extra cumulative update is shipped, depending on the bugs that it needs to fix.

These updates will be listed as ?Updates? in WSUS and Configuration Manager, with certain exceptions when critical issues affecting organizations are targeted, so the updates will be flagged as ?Critical Updates.?

Customers who use Windows Update for Business won?t have these updates installed automatically if options to defer quality updates are in place.

You can simply ignore these updates
The software giant explains that Windows 10 users getting these updates will be allowed to deploy them just like the updates that are shipped on Patch Tuesday, but at the same time, be provided with options to deploy each of them only to a subset of devices.

?This enables the organization to ensure that... Read more

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

In the command prompt window, type or Copy & Paste the following:

Running windows 7 home premium 64bit, my administrator account is completely unusable. Following login, I occasionally have time to open one program or window before all programs stop responding, and new ones fail to open. No error codes are given. Trying to shut down normally clears everything except my background, and then proceeds no further. My mouse is free to move, but shutdown can only be performed by holding the power button down.
Fixes I have tried:
1. System restore: no change
2. sfc /scannow: Cannot perform as administrator, doesn't make it past verification stage.
3. msconfig: The startup services, not startup programs, are the source of my issue. The problem seems to be related to startup services related to network and internet access. I could not narrow it down to one file, it may be multiple files causing the problem.

Note: My guest account works fine, as I am typing this message from that account. I am not sure what other options I have as far as my original account goes. Are there any fixes for malfunctioning startup services? Thank you in advance for any help you can give, I am at a loss.

A:No programs load on main account, system must be shut down manually

Firstly I would suggest you to do a clean boot and see if it helps: Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Then do a malware scan: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

If nothing works, then perform a repair install: Repair Install

A repair install should fix the services.
