strange video problem

Q: strange video problem

I'm running on very stable XP system (P4, 800 MHz bus, 1GB RAM, 120 GB fast HD). I'm currently interesting in making DVDs for my child (as a matter of fact I've already done 11 DVDs) and I'm editing video in Adobe Premiere.
What I can't understand is the video quality of the final video I produce. When I watch final DVD on the standalone DVD player, the picture quality is OK (of course is a bit worse then original video, but I'm satisfied), but playing this DVD on the same computer (and the same DVD burner) on which DVD is made - drives me crazy. The picture is good in the static scenes, but not in the moving ones. It's full of strobo like effects and criss-cross lines. It's not happening in the standalone players!
And what I'm more confused is that same thing is happening when I play original footage (microsoft DVD AVI compression): watching it in the Premiere monitor window when I edit - everything looks perfect, but playing the same video in another program (BS player or windows media player or ...) yields bad results which I described earlier. I conclude that it must be a driver problem, but it's my top. Anybody knows?
Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a system that all of a sudden does not display video after the W7 splash screen. This system has a graphics card in it and I had disabled the motherboards graphics port in the BIOS a couple years ago when I built it.

It has worked well ever since I built it but has changed due to either someone messing with it or maybe a windows update.

I currently have the system connected to a TV with an HDMI cable, but I have confirmed with an old monitor, it does the same using the VGA port.

I have also tried to repair using the Windows Repair Disk which strangely enough goes blank after the "Loading Files" screen.

All three options of safe mode stop after a certain amount of files that load. The screen does not go black here; it simply remains frozen with the file list showing.

I tried to do a fresh install of W10 and again goes black after the loading files.

Sorry I am being vague about the Hardware as I would typically look it up from the control panel and the boxes I had for the mother board, processor, GPU, etc are somewhere in the house and will have to find them.

Any ideas on what is going on? Maybe I need ot go into the bios and re-enable the onboard graphics and try that way.

I am having a strange problem with Media Center. I am using an ATI Theater Pro 650 tuner card connected to analog cable. Everything is perfect except for when the live TV picture is mostly white, I get a squealing sound, and the picture distorts a little. This is when the video stream is mostly white only.

I have the latest drivers for the tuner installed, and have tried old drivers as well.

Any ideas what would cause this?

Whit picture means that there is a configuration problem with your TV tuner card.

Does your card accept analogue signals?

make sure you have it set to match your signal (PAL or NTSC)

Hello there,
I've searched the forum and cannot find my exact problem. I would dearly love some help! Whenever I try to play video with any player (real, windows media) the clip loads and starts and then the player screen goes blank. If I minimize the screen and then enlarge it again, the image will register for a second or two. I've tried removing and reinstalling the programs. Any ideas for a way to fix this?

Hey- I just formatted my harddrive to clear out some old problems I was having. In the process I switched from win2kpro to XP. Everything starts fine to begin with, but after installing my linksys wireless card and restarting, the frequency gets all messed up, and I have no idea why. I'm in safe mode with networking at the moment. I've tried downloading the newest drivers, as well as powerstrip, but they do nothing. Got a wierd problem that hopefully somebody out there might be able to help me with. Got an avi file downloaded from digital camera - put it on my network and tried to run it using WMP v9, it wouldn't play (sound but no video), but if I play the same file copied from the network to a usb flash drive from the usb drive (or to local hd), it plays fine using WMP v9. So my question is what's stopping me playing this file from my network - any ideas?

My media player(s) have a strange problem where All videos are black, with Rainbow colors and things like that. It happens on both WinAMP and Windows Media player.
any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Strange Rainbow Video Problem.

Sounds like a codec problem. What is the source of the vids you have problems with? Are they all from the same source? Is it only avi's and mpg, or are wmv's affected as well? Try going to www.divx.com, downloading and installing the latest dixv bundle. If you try playing divx compressed videos without the proper codec a problem like the one you describe can result.

This question is being asked on behalf of a friend. They have a video file, MP4, that they can't seem to play or do anything with. I created the video file for them, so I know it is not dodgy with a virus or anything. It works fine on my PC, but on theirs it just acts as though it is not there even though it shows up in explorer.

I haven't been able to use their PC myself so I can only tell you what they have told me that they have tried. He says when he right clicks on the file it shows only a 1/4 of the properties that should be there when he right clicks on a working video file. Supposedly nothing happens at all when double left clicked, no error message, just nothing. I told him to try and use MediaInfo and other tools to view info on the file, but he just replies saying nothing happens when he tries it.

He uses AllPlayer to view video files, but has supposedly tried other video players and nothing works. I think they are using Windows XP.

I know this message is quite vague but that is all I know presently. Video file, MP4, wont play, has less properties on it than normal when right clicked, and other similar video files (with same codec) play fine. No error messages, nothing can be done with file.

If there are any suggestions I could tell them to try, then please let me know, thanks for your help in advance

A:Strange problem with MP4 video file !!

Tell them to try Haihaisoft Universal Player and choose to install the codecs that come with it (in the installation options). Right-click, Open With, and choose the player as default in case it got associated with something else. Or choose the mp4 association during setup.

I recently upgraded my GF4Ti to a 5700LE and am now having a very strange video problem.

First off I did uninstall the drivers before switching cards, and uninstalled the old card even though they both use the same driver.

When I try to view a video now, the video acts very strangely. The picture inside WMP actually moves around inside the viewing area like it's too big to fit and it's letting it scroll around inside the viewing area. But the picture IS the right size, when it scrolls off to the side, it just shows black and whatever corner of the picture remains in the viewing area. It moves opposite my mouse (for instance if i move the mouse to the right the picture slides off to the left of the viewing area) and only moves up and left or some combination of both.

Secondly when I full screen the video, i get very bad tearing, much like the wind effect in photoshop. This only happens when the video is centered, as even in full screen mode the video will move off to the left or up off the screen as if it's scrolling to show me more... but the picture is the right res.

I am running this throug DVI to a 2000FP (all hardware and software the same as before the card switch) and it's driving me insane! I like to watch videos on my computer a lot and this kills it for me!

I had the exact same tearing problem a few years back with a different video card (don't remember what one) and I don't remember how I fixed it. Any help is GREATLY appreciated... Read more

First off, my PC specs:

AMD Athlon X2 4400+
BFG GeForce 7800GTX OC
2GB Crucial Ballistix PC3200
Windows XP Home

Problem I am having is that recently I have noticed in just about every game an issue with the graphics being sort of accelerated. For example, I was playing Planetside and noticed that any moving animation or a picture of someone walking or something would be speeded up, like in fast forward or something. While walking in the game I was teleporting, sort of like lag issues but the game was progressing at the same rate I was just actually jumping forward very fast and moving fast. Looking from third person perspective the animation of my character running was also in fast forward. This has been happening in a lot of games, sometimes causing them to crash. This is a brand new PC and so I am sure it is not a hardware problem, probably just some setting I need to change. Any suggestions?

I have an odd problem with a new GPU card where I get no video signal on power up but as soon as Windows load the graphics driver, the monitor turns on. My system is self built and has been running fine until recently when I seemed to have a problem with the existing GPU, hence the warranty replacement. My system is:

Motherboard: GA-X58A-UD3R Rev 2.0
CPU: Intel I-7 950 @3.07GHz
Memory: 3*4GB Crucial DDR3
PSU: Coolermaster RS-850-SPHA-D3 850W: +3.3V:22A, +5V:25A, +12V:70A

Now I've already run through a swathe of tests and can confirm that all the components are working. Tried GTX 670 in another system and it works fine, tried an NVidia Quadro in the above system and it works fine - I see video from power up to Windows 7 login screen. I've tried different DVI cables and this makes no difference - the cables I am using are good.

Next, I have a KVM so I put both the GTX 670 and the Quadro into the system and cabled their DVI O/P to separate ports in the KVM. This is where the fun starts. NOTE: there is no onboard video so I need some way to see the BIOS and boot screens, hence this setup.

Some background on the motherboard. It has a BIOS setting that defines what PCI slot will be used as the initial display port. This can be set to PCI, PCI-E, slot 1 and PCI-E slot 2. As long as I put the Quadro in slot 1, I can use the PCI and PCI-E slot 1 BIOS settings and I will get video from power up but the GTX 670 does not produce a signal until Win... Read more

A:Strange video problem on boot

Seems the problem may lie with the card. After exhausting and eliminating all causes I could think of, the last thing I thought of to try was to connect to my TV using the HDMI socket on the card. This provides a video signal from power on but using the DVI socket I don't get video until Windows has loaded the GTX 670 driver.

Any ideas why the DVI socket is fine when I use the NVidia Quadro but doesn't provide a video signal in standard VGA when I use the 670?

I have an nvidia 6800 GT. Over the last couple of days my computer has been having problems booting up. Sometimes it will go all the way until Windows should be coming on the screen and just stop and go black. Othertimes, once turned on, the power light on the monitor will just flash as if there isn't a signal (but no "No signal detected" message on the screen.

As of today, all I get is the flashing light and black screen. I put the card in two friend's computers and it worked fine. I put 2 different old nvidia cards in this computer and both booted up fine.

When trying the 6800 in the computer again, I got the same problem.

Hello everyone!

I recently came across a strange issue with my Windows 8.1 install. After some months working, the when i woke up the screen, sometimes the monitor glithces (boxes show up on screen) when something is refreshing on the screen, nothing when im not moving the mouse (doing nothing) on screen. It does it onlywhen im waking up the screen (not waking from sleep)

I did several tests accourding to the GPU power supply errors but nothing. Now i set the screen off timer to never and manually turning off the monitor.

What should be my next step with it? Its strange to me that it only does it in this situation, graphical performance in games, video editing is flawless.

The specs are :

I am having a problem just after Windows loads onto Desktop. It Seems that then my screen goes black but with a lot of squiggly differently colored lines and then a blue screen for a brief moment with a ton of code. The computer restarts itself at this point and goes through the same process. Now this exact problem does not end up in a restart always. Every three times of doing this or so it will do the lines and stuff but then go to my Desktop Screen but without loading the Speaker button and my Safely remove hardware icon on the bottom of the screen + Nothing will function if clicked on by mouse. Finally my monitor will say no display for about 5 seconds then it will come back and everything loads and is working fine.
I have tried numerous things such as reverting back to old Nvidia drivers. Checking all conections and reseating Video cards and Memory along with trying all slots available and each individually. A client of mine has a little quirky problem with their computer. When they run iTunes, a lot of colors (background behind text or album art) is wrong. To me it almost looks like their video card is trying to generate 3D visuals that it's not actually capable of doing. I don't remember the exact card that's in the PC, but I think it had 32MB of ram.

Attached is a screenshot to show an example of what their iTunes looks like. Has anyone ever seen something like this before? How might it be fixed?

When I turn on my computer the graphics are not normal in the sense it lacks background colors and the fonts are larger than normal. After about 1/2 hour everything returns to normal size and colors. It does this to internet as well as program screens. It is not fatal, just very annoying. I am using XP Home on a HP Pavilion XL759 with M70 monitor. I use MyIE2 but had the problem before adopting it. I recently upgraded my onboard video to a card and I still get the same effect.

Another problem I have is that I cannot reboot after a crash without disconnecting my USB mouse. I use a Microsoft USB Optical Intellimouse. I tried different USB ports without any success.

Final problem My system is pretty stable except when I use the mouse to scroll down the screen using a window's scroll bars. Sometimes the system will freeze up and I have to reboot (and experience problem #2 if I do not disconnect the mouse).

None of these problems are life threatening. Just bumps on the highway of life. Any help will be appreciated.

Take a peek in Display Properties and make sure the resolution and refresh rates are set correctly.

As for the USB mouse mouse problems, get a USB - PS/2 conversion plug and run the mouse from the PS/2 mouse port. For some reason(s) USB mice seem to cause a lot of problems for many (not all) people. Or, you could say to yourself, "Now is a good time to invest in a cordless optical mouse."

about a week ago, i decided to reinstall warhammer: dawn of war. Well, obviously I needed to get the latest patch, and found some website you could download it from. I did so, it is an .exe file. It didnt seem to really work. I then started the game, to find you could just update it through multiplayer, and it worked fine. I quit, then went to delete the file I had downloaded to my desktop. Seemed simple enough, but it wont let me delete it, says its being used by another person/program. this was the case even after a reboot, and uninstalling the game. Finally, i tried booting up in safe mode, thinking for sure i could get rid of it there. No dice. Maybe it's no big deal, but i would like to get rid of it. Also, the fact that it's so difficult to get rid of makes me wonder if its doing something its not supposed to be. I mean its just a patch file, why the hell is it constantly running?

The file name is DOW-140-141 (presumably meaning Dawn of War that patches version 1.40 to 1.41).

strangely enough, i go to properties of this file, and it has 8 tabs, not just the usual 2 or 3 i am used to seeing. all sorts of stuff: general, misc, compatability, program, screen, etc.

Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, I'll give you all a quick rundown of my problem, and what i did to try and fix it.

First off, i have a 60gb ide drive for my windows installation (3 other drives for storage), and i got a 150gb Raptor X, which is sata. I cloned the 60gb boot drive onto the raptor, but it didnt boot, and said the HAL was corrupt. My guess would be that the hardware abstraction layer got all defunct when it saw the new sata drive, but was expecting an ide? After all that, i decided to run a chkdsk on the ide drive, and clone it again, to see if it booted. I used the recovery console on a windows xp pro disc, but alas, i couldnt chkdsk because i forgot my admin password. Stupid me. Well, i thought i'd reset the admin password with the windows xp repair installation. (Hit shift+f10 when it is "installing devices" in the gui part of the windows installation, and modify users from the cmd prompt.) But, i didnt get that far. after it copied all the files in dos, and would normally go back and continue installation, it restarted the computer and flashed the windows logo, normal stuff. then the logo went away and the computer restarted. Now it's in an endless loop, and does the same if i try the repair installation again. I really need to get this drive back up and running somehow.

Any help is appreciated.

Also, i used Paragon HDD manager 6 to clone the hard drives.

I'm having a few issues, and just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen, or may know what causes it.

First, this could be related, I'm not sure, a few days ago I ran GPUZ and CPUZ, clicking through the tabs and realized my video card was set at Pci-Express x4 1.1. I reseated the card several times, cleaned the pci-e slot, then used my secondary pci-e power connectors, and finally it's running as it should @ x16. I'm not sure how long it was like that, the performance decrease wasn't noticeable. (I'm actually curious if it was just reporting it wrong, because my benchmarks were extremely close; Counter Strike: Source| Video Stress test 216fps at x4, then when I fixed it, 224fps. All settings maxed. This all happened two days ago, and has been fine since fixing it, but..
Now, and this never happened before, and started right after that issue, sometimes when I boot up, if I right click the desktop, and select 'Refresh', the screen go's black for a moment, for about exactly 1 second, not long enough for the monitor to say (no video), but close. Once or twice it did do that though. Once yesterday while browsing this forum, it started, but this time it only did it if I tried to scroll up or down a thread. I minimized my browser, and tried to select refresh at the desktop, to see if it was the same bug, and it did it, I had to restart the machine.
Then just now, today, I booted up, signed into my user, and exactly then, as it said loading, just as the desktop should appe... Read more

A:Strange video issues

I can only guess at this, of course, but that certainly sounds like it could be a failing video card. But it could also be due to a under-powered or failing power supply or even bad or faulty RAM.

The symptoms are very similar to TDR events, but since you are not getting any messages (Display Driver xxx stopped responding and was recovered") then we can assume it is not that, for now.

Try the new drivers. Make sure you are doing a clean driver install when dealing with video issues.

Also test to see if advanced graphics trigger the events by changing the desktop from an Aero theme to one of the basic themes. When I refresh my desktop it is nearly instantaneous - I can barely see the flash. Your video is dogging down to perform that simple task.

Also, look in your Event Viewer to see if there are any Critical Errors or Warnings that might point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps.

I have a custom computer, with parts I can't desribe from heart. Either way I have a quite strange problem I reckon.
When I start my computer, everything seems fine. Once I get into windows, all good. Though as soon as I start a video file, either on computer or e.g. YouTube, the computer hangs. The only temp solution is to pull the plug. If I only reboot, the computer only says that there is no keyboard detected (!). Though if I either switch of the powersource or pull the plug, then the keyboard error upon reboot is gone, and once again I get into windows. Though as soon as hitting a website with any kind of video file the system stalls.
I have already purchased a new power sourse, as a friend thought it might be simply lack of power. Though the problem persists still. I am thinking it might be the video card, but I think that would be strange since windows still is working with full grafics.
Still I think it would be a hardware problem, dunno why, just think so with by base experince with computers.
I would be very thankful for any suggestions, as well as ideas how to check them.

This has got to be the strangest thing ever to happen to me. I had an AGP ATI video card with 256 mb on board which I do not remember the exact model number. It was about 8 years old. I have recently bought a flat screen 1080i 24 inch led TV which works great as a monitor ( and I mean great) Eventually the ATI card went bad and a friend had lying around an older NVIDIA TNT2 model 64 pro64 with only 64 meg on board. I almost flipped out to find that this older NVIDIA card was a 100 times better. Now everything is so crystal clear even at 1920 by 1080 my screen looks almost like an apple retina display. even the colors are so much brighter. The biggest complaint I had with the ATI card was poor contrast which I blamed on my TV/monitor, But no more. How could this possibly be? it makes absolutely no sense.

A:Very strange video question (:

Not sure. But I had an opposite experience many years ago. I had a p2 300 with an ATi Rage Fury Pro (I think) and played EV Nova on it, shortly after I built a 1Ghz Athlon Thunderbird system and had a GF2MX 32Meg card and it didn't look as good as the ATi.

Perhaps you didn't have the correct/best driver installed.

Hi EveryoneI was looking for some type of connection that would go from a VCR to my pc to 'convert' the video to dvd and found these!I know what the three colored cables are and I know what the S-video connector is but the one at the other end .. has me stumped! It 'looks' like the typical S-video connector except it has 8 pins and does not fit any female connection that I have ever seen.Any ideas? Thanks,MC

In trying to fix an "audio, but no video" circumstance, I checked to see if I have all up-to-date codecs and players. I do. I ran the video through GSpot and it reported that the video was playable on my system. Still "audio, but no video." Then I put on a DVD, and it played fine. Immediately after that, I went back to various video files (avi, wmv, mpeg formats) and this time they ran fine too. The following day, after turning off my computer and then rebooting, once again I had the "audio, but no video" situation. I put on the DVD, as I did the day before, and once again, it triggered the video formats to begin playing fine. Something about playing the DVD is acting as a trigger to correct the video problem. Anyone have an idea about what it might be?

Hey guys,

I currently have a Toshiba Satellite A200 Laptop (Core2Duo 1.73Ghz, 1Gb RAM, GeForce Go 7300, Vista Home Premium).

When I attempt to play 1080p video (MKV/h.264) using Media Player Classic it will play fine for a while at around 45-65% CPU utilisation, however after a varying amount of time (2-20mins) the CPU utilisation will suddenly skyrocket to 100% and remain at this level, and the video will start lagging and be unwatchable.
When I restart the video on MPC and skip to the most recently watched part, the same issue of lag will again occur after a few minutes.

Video lag had been an issue previously using VLC player but after I found MPC and installed CoreAVC I had been able to watch 1080p videos without any problems.
I currently have CoreAVC 1.7 installed. I have also tried installing the K-lite Codec Mega Pack, as well as uninstalling various programs such as PowerDVD and Nero360 to see if this made any difference, but have not been able to come up with any solution.

I have updated by graphics drivers to the latest version from the product page for my laptop on the Toshiba website, yet there is no discernible difference. I have also tried using a variety of media players, including Zoom player, KMPlayer and GOM player.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated. A poster on another forum suggested the issue may be related to buffer underrun or hard drive cache settings and referred me to these forums, however I am unsure of how to proceed in resolving this is... Read more

My laptop boots up fine(I think). It makes all of the neccesary noises, hd. cd. and everything but 6\7 times the video is wonky. the lowers 2\3is a light blue and the upper third is dark blue. There are 2 verticle bars that run from top to bottom in it. a light green one that is stationary and a black one that moves in accordance with the touch pad. I have tried enabling and disabling the video drivers via the recovery console with no luck. The system never(even when the picture is clear) boots to windows, always gets bsod.(c000021a 0x0000005) followed closely by d0000144 error. I believe the monitor is bad but I want to be sure before going there. I would like to enable the external monitor port via recovery console if any one can help. No I can not do it via bios, I already tried. yes I have tried scanning the memory, all is well in their world. Tried scanning hd, same. I fear that the laptop is just trying to piss me off.

The starts are as follows:

windows xp home
inspiron B120
celeron M : 1.4 Ghz
512 mb ddr sdram

If any one has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks in advance for your help.

A:strange, erratic video

You do not need to go to the Recovery Console to run an external monitor. Depending on the make and model, you usually hit the FN key and one of the function keys, like F6 to toggle to the external monitor. I would also try updating your video driver.

When I plug my monitor into the onboard port it will not work unless I install a video card. If I try to use the video card It won’t work. The only way I can get my onboard video to work is by installing a video card that won’t run the monitor. WTF am I missing here. I had a hell of a time getting the driver installed for the onboard video, anyway I got it but I still need this useless ati vid card? Does it matter which video goes to 1st in bios agp or pci ? mine is safe at agp. Anyway any help would be much appriciated

My friend and i are working on a new video and to make parts of it appear as though it is "streaming live via satellite", I decided to record with my webcam (Built in to the lid/monitor of my xps m1530). We recorded 4 small .avi files. However, we can not get them to play back. VLC gives us this:
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "CVC1". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
When trying to play it back in Dell Webcam Center (that is what i used to record it), it plays but i get no audio.

Hello everybody, I entered computer hell a few months ago when my completely ancient geforce2 gts 32 meg graphics card stopped rendering polygons.

Now, I figured this would be just the end of the card's life. It was something like three or four years old and the fan had stopped working on it. I had since replaced most every other part of my machine save the graphics card, so I lived with my machine not rendering 3d anything until I could afford a new card.

Well I got a geforce4 128 meg card, and when I installed it my computer still would not render polygons. I reformatted my machine and tried again, and it worked... for about 48 hours.

It may not be important, but I played Knights of the Old Republic on the fresh format solidly until my wife wanted a game of Diablo, so I installed Diablo, played a game, and when I went back to KotOR the game didn't load (see below). I went on to install the rest of my games and try them with similar results, some of which are listed below.

My current machine I've built myself, it's got:

duron 1.8 ghz processor
foxconn 748k7aa 400 mhz fsb mainboard
768 mb of ddr 400 ram
onboard sound (at the moment, I've got an audigy one I yanked out to see if that was maybe causing issues)
geforce4 mx 4000 agp with 128 meg o ram

None of these parts were installed in my machine when the problem first came up, so I have to assume it's either a software conflict of some kind or:

... GPU doesn't have its own fan? Its probably the GPU overheating..

buy a zalman gpu fan (best out there that I know of) and if that doesn't fix it,
update to the latest nVidia forceware drivers from thier website.

And what do you mean it won't render polygons? Polygons are a shape..
Does it not render shapes well?

The PSU looks fine, (but how old?)

Could be the optical drive, since these games have to load files from a CD,
that could be causing the problems.

Solutions: but a GPU fan, buy a new optical CD-Drive.

Long time no see guy's. Heres the trouble. I tried to use Windows Movie Maker for the first time and when I opened it, the "Save As" window opened. I tried to close it and it came right back. Tried to save it as somthing...popped up again. So I searched around for a fix, I have SP2 already so thats not the problem. I re-installed the software...same problem. So I went to download.com to find a similar program....installed it..opened it....same problem! WMM works just fine on my wifes crappy ol pc but my laptop just wont run any video editing software without this same "Save As" loop! Any ideas....graphics card cant handle it or what... It runs the Intel Extreme graphics (bummer i know), plus the GUI in Fruity Loops wont work either...strange!

I am having a problem when playing video files. If i open a file in media player calssic or VLC, it plays at about a third brightness, pixelated and with a reduced color palette. However if i pause playing the file , open up another video file in some other media player, and then resume the playback of the first file, it magically starts playing in full color and at full brightness.
It doesnt matter if i use media player classic, VLC or powerDVD, they all do it.
It has only been happening for about 4 months.
I have a geForce 6200 if that means anything.

I know this is probably the last thing you guys want to read about but:

Well I just got a Geforce FX 5200 128MB AGP (yeah, I know..) and I'm having some problems.

When I first put it in and turned on my computer, the system didn't boot at all. Not even a beep. So I read up some things online and took an eraser to the gold fingers and applied a little wd-40 as well, and voila, it's working. I have it in right now actually. BUT... I can't play any videos or anything! I tried to open the D drive which had the Sim City 4 CD, and the system rebooted. No game menu or anything. Then I tried to play a video file and it rebooted again. I updated my BIOS for my motherboard but that didn't do anything either. I'm wondering if this is a compatibility issue with my motherboard. It's an Asus A7V8X-X, so i figured it should work, but I don't know where to find this out. I know it's a crappy video card to begin with but it should still work, and it's definitely better than my old Geforce 2 GTS 32MB.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the nvidia drivers several times. My PCU is 400 watts. The CPU is an AMD XP2200 1.8 Ghz. I have 512 MB DDR 2700. So what's the problem? Any ideas?

Oh, and this is the card I have.

I also messed around with some of the BIOS settings like Aperture size, CAS Latency, RAS to CAS Delay, Fast Write, etc, but didn't do too much because I didn't want to break anything. Any... Read more

Hello. I am having some trouble with my SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600XT 128mb. Heres my specs:
Gigabyte GA-7VT600 Motherboard
Athlon XP 3200+ with a MCX462-V heatsink and fan.
1 GB Kingston HyperX PC3200 ram (CL 2-3-2-6 @ 200mhz)
Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 128mb.
SB Audigy 2
Maxtor 120 GB IDE HDD.
Antec 480W True Blue PSU.

Heres exactly what ive done over the past week.

-Used to have 512mb of PC2100 RAM,Athlon XP 2600+, and a 300W generic PSU. *I First upgraded my RAM (1gb hyperx pc3200) and ran it at 166mhz with my 2600+. *It worked well.

-Next day my Athlon XP 3200+ arrives with new heatsink. *I take out my old processor, and CAREFULLY place the new one in (after spreading artic silver 5 on it). *I then put my heatsink on, connect the 80mm fan, and attemp to turn it on. *
Boot was unsuccessful. *It would turn on, but the HDD light would stay illuminated and nothing would happen. *I tried everything (reset CMOS, take every thing out except CPU, SW1 switch on). *I took the 3200 out, and put the 2600 with new heatsink back in. *Worked great (and cool). *I came to the conclusion my PSU was inadequite.

-Next day, go to COMPUSA and buy Antec 480W powersupply. *Replaced with the old one, hooked it up, etc. *Turned it on, it was loud, but it was smooth as butter and had great overclocking potential (41C load). *

-Next day, I go to put in my XP 3200+, and at first it was unsuccesful. After some CMOS resetting and all of that stuff, I got it to load my BIOS. The only problem is that my POST ... Read more

I'm using this old PC that can be seen in my profile, it's good for its purpose, but yesterday the VGA started to make some strange noises. I replaced the CPU fan just before it started (it is more powerful than the previous one was), cleaned the whole PC (even the VGA fan for sure), but it does these noises, sounds like it wants to start, but it can't, here you can hear it:

It was doing something similar before it (for around 2 days, nothing before that!), but not this often, and it wasn't that loud and annoying. I was thinking of the PSU it's also some old something, probably 350-400W, maybe because of the new CPU fan it can't get enough power? I'm gonna replace the whole thing probably in January, so I don't want to spend on it until then. Should I stick to the old CPU fan then? Thanks for any suggestions, have a nice day!

Please forgive me if this problem of mine sounds confusing, I'll explain as best I can. 1st I have searched these forums as all over Google for a fix my self, but the problem is hard to put in simple words.

So to the point, I just brought a new HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850 video card. After installing it seems to be running fine, however at 1st in some of my games I was unable to get high quality graphics/textures, even tho the games settings were applied to give everything on max settings.

Now I've messed around in ATI's Catalyst Control Center a bit and I'm not sure what I did but I have high rez textures now. HOWEVER, that wasnt my only problem. The 1st thing I noticed when I loaded up my game for the 1st time with the new card was, my fonts in some of the UI seemed fuzzy and hard to read, then I noticed the textures, then some of the icons.

So I think the texture problem is fixed but I still have the issue with the UI. For more specific examples, EVE Online is the game I'm talking about, At 1st Bad textures, but now just bad Text/UI

Also World of Warcraft, the text in login screens, chat boxes, UI windows, ect, are almost unreadable jaggys,

I even tried Half-Life 2, same thing with UI text, jaggys and slightly unreadable, HOWEVER a new problem arised with Half-life 2, seemed that the lighting on character models was way off. In light they look fine, but in a shadow they become so dark they are almost un recognizable.

I realize this post of mine is... Read more

I have been having this very frustrating problem with Vista 64. The machine seems to be find and I can run anything I want, but then it will just lock up. The screen shows what ever graphics was there but its all scrambled. This can happen at an time after the desktop show, 2 minutes or 2 hours. I can run in safe mode all day and night so I'm thinking graphics or some other driver. I have run tests using Everest Ultimate and everything seems fine, except it will lockup like everything else. I have had this issue since the beginning, when I had 1 video card. I have gotten Crossfire enabled and SP1 installed. I am using the latest Catalyst driver 8.3. One note, when I installed the newest driver, it changed how the screen looks when it locks up, but its still the same issue. Any ideas or settings that I should look at, I have tinkered with them all with no results. I hope someone has the answer!

A:Vista Locks up with strange video displayed

I am having the same issue with an ATI Radeon 3650 on Vista X64. The problem started fairly recently. For no apparent reason the syem freezes and the display scrambles. I have not been able to isolate the issue. But I think that the video card is a prime suspect.
