HomeGroup Start Menu Option Doesn't Work

Q: HomeGroup Start Menu Option Doesn't Work

Turning the HomeGroup option on in the start menu:

+ clicking it:

= this:
Using the HomeGroup option in File Explorer = it works:
Has anyone else encountered this problem, or is it just me? If someone has encountered it, could you let me know how to fix it? I'd like to be able to go to HomeGroup from the start menu instead of File Explorer. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an ASUS notebook running windows 7 64-bit. I am using the QuietOffice power profile, however the screensaver won't kick in no matter what I do, and the display does not turn off even though I set it to be after 5-minutes of inactivity. I don't know if there is something running in the background... I have turned off my usb wireless mouse, and nothing....

Any ideas?

THanks.

A:HELP: power option doesn't work - screen saver doesn't start!

This is another case of factory bloatware interfering - in this case a useless factory utility overriding Win7's superior built-in version.

Googling the Quiet Office feature of Asus there are multiple reported problems. Best to default to the Win7 built-in Power Options in Control Panel. Set up a Balanced Plan unless you're a gamer then use High Performance.

Here are other tips for cleaning up factory bloatware

Howdy, here's as much detail about my problem as i can find:

Windows XP Pro, SP2. For some reason after a while of having been booted up, the start menu ceases to appear. I can click on it, hit the Windows key, hit Ctrl-Esc and NOTHING. only a reboot makes it function properly. Also, right clicking on the task bar, the 'Toolbars >' disappears as well.

When i reboot, the Quick Launch toolbar is not displayed and when i enable it. the order in which it was originally in seems to have been lost.

The start menu is in Classic mode, but switching it to normal mode will get the menu to appear, but nothing works. Ie the program list won't expand. Neither will network connections, control panel, etc. even the programs shortcuts that normally appear on the left side of the menu are blacked out.

Anyone else having a similar problem...? Or anyone have a possible solution.
My system has been AdAwared & SB SnD to be crystal clean. i can post a HT
log if you want, but there's nothing much there...

I'm trying to avoid an O/S reinstall... Anyways, any help would be much appreciated...

cheers,
yt

Try running a repair...but your probably headed to a reinstall. I've seen the dissappearing taskbar problem your describing but never as dramatic as what you describe. It sounds like a bad install (not your fault/bits fell in the wrong bucket) to me..

For some odd reason when searching for documents of any kind by title or tag does not work in the start menu search bar.
I can search in explorer, but unless i copy and paste in the file path into the start menu, there will be no search results. Could it be that my documents are in my b drive not c? I have indexed all my files as well.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Is there another user account on that PC? If so log into that one and see if it works in that account, if it does, there is a problem with the user account. If you do not have another user account go to Control Panel/User Accounts and create a new one with admin rights, log out of the current account and log into the new one you just made.

If the New user account works using Start Search, then migrate your old user account profile to the new one.
Delete the old corrupt user account after a few weeks using the new one.

Hi, an often reported issue- tho' yours has the added run box report.
As I don't know the history... as in 'did this ever work' 'is it a clean install or an upgrade' 'what did you do before this happened' etc I'll take a simple view.

I will assume you don't use disk imaging, else you would have restored an image you'd created prior to this happening. Highly recommended strategy to back up, preserve your PC and your sanity without tech help.

You could have conflicting 3rd party programs from an AV ovwards, so yuo could check whether these work
a. after clean boot
b. in safe mode

You could try the standard
chkdsk c: \F from an admin command prompt.
Then
sfc /scannow from the same.
Finally there is a DISM command you can run.

However, I would recommend you run chkdsk, then do an in place upgrade install, one of the really good things about Win 10.
This keeps most settings and all your progs.

Very recently I began encountering an issue where, randomly, windows will stop appearing as they should. If I open task manager, Steam, Firefox, etc, the contents of the window will appear as black. The top bar and borders around the window will appear, however everything inside the window will be black. Additionally, the start menu does not display any options. To make matters more confusing, any windows already open BEFORE encountering this bug will continue to work. So, if Firefox was opened before encountering the issue, it will work just fine. However any window opened after this point will appear as black. Since I was unable to save screenshots, I have attached pictures of the issue.

In the picture you can see Firefox open and working just fine. However, I noticed the problem when a Steam notification appeared as a black box. You may also notice that the task bar does not show any open windows. You can also see how the start menu has stopped functioning.

In Win XP (and other "modern" versions of Windows), if you pull up the the Start menu and then right-click on an entry, you get several options, one of which is "Explore", which should open an Explorer window on that part of the file system.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

So the 29th of July i went ahead and installed the Windows 10 update. It installed correctly and ran smooth without any problems for a few hours. Suddenly i realized that my Start Menu button didn't open the start menu when i clicked it. Neither did the search button.

I didn't really think about it much and continued gaming with one of my friends. Later that night i tried to restart my pc to see if that fixed any of my issues. Unfortunately nothing was fixed.

Now i can't open any microsoft apps (other than the Health and training app through the Task Manager and then the apps tab). Theres no way to access the settings or Windows Update so im stuck with just using non-microsoft apps if i can find them that is under my HDD.

(Edit) I can't rightclick anything in the taskbar or manage my internet connection.

Any help to fix this is highly appriciated.

Methods i have tried found around the internet:

Using the
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} command in Windows PowerShell as admin.

Running this troubleshooter from this link

Similar problem only I could not get Windows installed apps to open properly. I have a Lenovo G560 with a Dynadock plugged into a USB port and two additional monitors connected to the laptop (one directly and one through the Dynadock. In anticipation of installing Win 10, I upgrade my RAM and replaced my hdd with an SSD drive. I am upgrading from Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium. I did the upgrade and not a clean install. The upgrade seemed to go just fine. The first thing I noticed was and Notices icon so I clicked on it and some notices appeared. I tried to click on those but as soon as I moved the mouse off of the notices icon the list disappeared. The same thing happened when I went to Start. I rebooted the computer and the above problems went away. So I began exploring around the Start Menu. I got cortana to recognize Hey Cortana and she even told me a joke. When I asked her to play Rock Paper Scissors, she started having problems. Again I rebooted, and she could tell a joke but no RPS. Then I asked her to open MS Edge but that did not work. Tried myself by clicking on the E icon and I got an error message saying it could not find Internet Explorer.exe. Went to Start Menu and tried to start Edge. It looked like it was going to but nothing appeared. I went to Task Manager and there it was running so I ended the process and tried again. No joy. Again reboot. Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

A:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Hello,
Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

Hi there.

I have 2 computers and the networking and homegroup between them was fine (could share files, print remotely, etc).

Then I decided to change the name on one of them and everything has got very screwed up and I desperately need help! (I believe the homegroup problem emanates from the network problem)

If we say the original PC that created the homegroup was called OLDNAME and I wanted to make it NEWNAME. Then I went to the other PC and found that now nothing worked. So, rather than play with everything, I went back to the original and renamed it OLDNAME again... but alas, this didn't fix things. (Yes, I did do reboots after the renames).

The strange thing now is that when I try to connect to the homegroup from the second PC it says there is a homegroup managed by "name" on NEWNAME (even though the name is OLDNAME again) and whatever I do, this doesn't change. If I try to join it, after about a minute it comes back and says it can't connect.

To access files from PC2 to OLDNAME, I have had to change all the permissions individually to be able to see them. If I try to print I'm told that the active directory domain server can't be accessed.

All this is down to a simple change of computer name that screwed something and doesn't want to go back to the way it was.

A beer or two for anyone who can help me fix this!

Thanks

Brian Cleveland

A:Changed Computer Name and now Network and HomeGroup doesn't work

To fix the Homegroup permission problems you might try leaving the Homegroup from both machines and then create a new one. Changing the computer name will break the Homegroup sharing permissions so this may be the only actual problem you have so it might be worth while to try doing this first.
Homegroup - Leave

Homegroup - Create

Changing the computer or User name can cause problems with file associations which aren't very easy to fix. Besides changing the User name you would also need to change the account's user profile folder name in C:\Users, the link below shows you how. This may not apply in your case.

User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name

If you can't leave the Homegroup there is a way to fix it.

The fix for this problem seems to be Deleting the file idstore.sst under C:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

Once everything at peer Networking Grouping is running you may also need to do this...

Start the Task Manager
Click on the service Tab
Find the "HomeGroupProvider"
and then stop the service.

You may need to go back into services and enable Peernetworking again after the fix. Don't forget to restart all machines making the adjustments.

If you don't want to go through all that I would suggest you use the system restore feature to go back to a point in time to before the changes were made. System Restore

I have a subfolder under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu on my desktop that I want to copy to the same folder on a laptop which is part of my home network. I've explicitly set the shared properties of ...Start Menu on the laptop to Homegroup (Read/Write). Nevertheless, when I try to copy the subfolder from my desktop to the laptop I get the message "Destination Folder Access Denied: You need permission to perform this action." How do I get "permission"?

A:Can't copy files to shared Homegroup Start Menu

Let's make sure we are thinking the same steps here: You have shared the laptop's C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu on the network and checked that the permissions on the shared Start Menu folder are set to Read/write for Homegroup? You need to do that twice: once on the folder as it is listed under Network and once where the folder is listed in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. As ProgramData is a system folder you might also have to set Homegroup to have the right to "traverse folder" on ProgramData.
Quite a bit of work for replacing a few files really. Why do you have to do this over the network? Can't you just copy the file and do it locally? Mind you you might still have to tweak the permission on the ProgramData folder but at least you only have to do that once......

and if I had to replace the hard drives in them. Well on every windows machine I have, I have tried to make a system image to a 4.7 GB dvd-r disc using the system image option under file history via the control panel. What happens is I click the system
image option, it loads files but when I am prompted to label a disc and insert it, I click the ok button it runs for a few seconds and says their is an error. I keep getting the same dialog box over and over that says label and insert a disc and then it doesn't
create the image. Is there a certain type of DVD-R you are suppose to use or a certain way to format them. My windows 8 machine worked great in making the system image backup. It took 3 discs and when my hard drive went out I was able to restore the system
image.  Not one windows machine I have does the restore or refresh option work because of the upgrade to 8.1 and now the system image doesn't even work. These options are the essentials to fixing your computer without having to download the drivers from
the companies website and even then you may not get all the software or drivers needed. Any suggestions because I am getting ready to scrap any windows pc and go with a Linux distro and buy an apple and... Read more

Hi, I recently noticed that my start menu cannot be customized and programs cannot be pinned/unpinned or resized. When I attempt to right click anywhere not selecting a program nothing happens, and when I right click a program it simply highlights the program and gives it a check mark saying it is selected.
How do I fix this and make it so that I can resize and pin/unpin programs?
Screenshot attached for a more clear representation of the problem.

A:Uncustomizable Start Menu - No resize or pin option

Do you have newest updates installed ?. With them tiles can be customized by Right clicking on them to get their menu.

Hello All,

After the nightmare update we have all be enjoying, which has reset a lot of my customisation and fonts as well as killing one app, I have also got all my apps showing in my start menu instead of the convenient 'All Apps' button which made my start menu so neat and tidy before.

Anyone have an ideas on how to hide all my apps again? My start menu is ginormous with them all taking up space in the middle there, and everything I need quick access to is there in icon form anyway.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice,
LMX

Hello there, I am having an issue with my computer at start up. It's not anything that bothers me but I want to make sure nothing is wrong. When I start the computer it has a black screen with white text with the option to "Boot Windows XP" or select "Safe Mode" and it tells me to hit enter. Windows is highlighted by default and under this option menu it says "computer will take the selected action in 2, 1...." then boots up Windows as normal after 2 seconds. What the heck is this? Additionally sometimes the comp wont shut down after a shut down command from the start menu and I have to do it manually. Any insite is appreciated. Thanks.

Can't find how to log out a user in Windows 10.... ?
I happen to know the command line option for this ("logout", I believe) so I can still do it - but why has MS removed it from the Power options and where is it now? Searching for it in the Start menu does not bring it up - only offer to search the web -duh!

A:What Start Menu option to Log out current user?

Found it myself: Right click on the user name in the Start menu.

Hallo!

A few days ago the Shutdown option at the bottom of the start menu has disappeared and from the Ctrl+Alt+Delete also.

I have scanned the computer with Avira antivirus, free version, and super antispyware. Lots of things were deleted, but the shutdown option is still missing.

I have not been able to shut my laptop down for two days.

Apreciate your help.

New to Windows 7 and starting implementation for work.  Like to prevent users from accidently clicking on Lock and or Sleep when they click on Start.  I see in gpedit that I can disable everything including shutdown and logoff, but want to keep the options for shutdown, logoff and switch users.  Thanks in advance.

I tried everything to solve this problem but i can't fix it.

A:I don't get the Toolbar option in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.

What if you add a toolbar first?

Quick Launch toolbar - Add or Remove in Windows 10

The toolbar menu doesn't give you anything different to what you get by going to right-click > Toolbars menu anyway if you have that menu.

Reinstalled Windows 7 pro 64-bit for my friend's PC but after Windows updates the Search ( search programs and files ) the line under All Programs has disappeared ((
this is a screenshot from my computer to explain better what I am talking about

please help, how to get it back?

P.S. I am NOT talking about Search link on the right hand side, PLEASE see the screenshot

A:Search option disappeared in Windows 7(Start Menu)

Hello brat02

Firstly make sure windows search is enabled in windows features if not tick and reboot - Windows Features - Enable or Disable -

Or Windows Search - Turn On or Off

Run this up to 3 times or until the result comes back clear - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Ive not heard of a windows update doing this before, if all else fails do you have a system restore point available before you did the updates - System Restore

I have just upgrated from XP to Win 7 Home Premium. I'm missing the option to close my pc down with hybernation to get at much faster close down and restart.
Due to I can not get the "hybernation" menu option into the start menu.

I open "Power Option" click on "Change Advanced power Settings" and click on "Power buttons and lid". Here can I only see "Power button action" and have set it to "hybernate" which works"

I'm missing "Sleep button action" and "Start menu power button".

Can any one help me?

Jesper A

A:Start Menu Power button option is missing

Once you open the Power Options window,on the left click Choose what the power buttons do
Change the sleep button to Hibernate
Im not sure if this means the actual button on the front of your PC or the one on the start menu.

Either way you should now be able to set Hibernate.

Perhaps someone else can get you the options you want.

I am using windows 7 sp1 x64. I am not able to change my power option button action in start menu. It is just disables and i am not able to change it to anything.

Please help me fix this.

A:Cannot change Power Option Button in Start Menu

Hello Zaidbaby,

With it grayed out, it looks like you may have a group policy (option 4 or 5 below) set for this that prevents it from being changed.

You might see if you may be able to change the Power button action using one of the other options in the tutorial below instead.

Power Button - Start Menu

Hope this helps,

Hi
After I removed a theme pack called "Vista OSX" from my pc running vista home premium, the options such as shutdown, restart are missing from the start menu. And moreover, nothing shows up even if I press Alt + F4. Is there anyway to restore them back? I already tried System Restore but it fails to restore back to an earlier point.

ps. I screen shot the start menu and attached it.

Hi rapster88 . .

Are you updated w/ Vista SP1?

What was the problem with the system restore? Do you have dual-boot Vista/XP?
