Cursor/Keyboard Pausing, Forcing Hard Boot

Q: Cursor/Keyboard Pausing, Forcing Hard Boot

Just lately, my mouse cursor will all of a sudden freeze up, for about 5 seconds and then start moving again. But it then starts changing cursor shapes...goes from pointer to text entry then changes to a horizontal text entry. It also seems to have a red shadow around it when it starts doing this. I also notice my keyboard freezes up...can't change Num Lock, Scroll Lock or Cap lights.

I started looking in the event viewer to see what was going on during this time and it seems that event viewer always has the same Error:

Event ID: 14
nvlddmkm
\device\video5
!051d(2558)

.....source nvlddmkm cannot be found.

When this happens, I try to log off out of my user account but the issue seems to stay with me back into the login screen because it doesn't come back up...the screen just goes blank and then the monitor goes into a sleep mode, (I/O button on monitor starts flashing.) At this point I'm locked out and must push the computers start button to shut down power. Of course when I reboot, I'm presented with the Windows Error Recovery screen.

I also noticed that now when I log back into my user account, the HD light stays on steadily for a long time and everything loads slowly. I have CCleaner running at startup and it takes 5 minutes to even start the cleaning process. Once things are back up, eveything seems fine until the mouse starts freaking out again.

I just pulled my CPU fan off and cleaned out the cooling tower fins. I pulled out the graphics card and blew the cooling fans on that clean and also pulled out the power supply unit and blew it out real good. I've turned my 4 case fans up to highest setting and checked my temps in bios before loading windows again....everything is cool but it still freaks out.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This is a problem with the NVIDIA drivers.  Have you recently updated your video drivers?

If so, try rolling back the drivers to the previous version and seeing if that solves the problem.

I have seen a number of reported problems with recent updates to these drivers.

Last week, when I was listening to a podcast on my Surface Pro 3, the podcast randomly paused, most likely because someone clicked the pause button, then the pointer was moving by itself and opening tabs in Firefox (no mouse or trackpad were plugged in). I didn't bother, I just restored the computer, and haven't used it since then. Being a little too paranoid, I also did reset my modem and router, so everything would be fresh.Today, my new computer did the exact same thing, it paused my Youtube video and the cursor started moving by itself. I turned it off and booted in safe mode and made several antivirus scan with different programs (Norton, AVG, CCleaner, Malwarebytes), and nothing suspicious came out. What the deuce is going on? Could maybe this has to do with a malicious Firefox extension?PS: I am using legitimate copies of Windows 8.1 Pro.Thank you.

Hello! Hopefully i've come to the right place to get some help with this annoying problem that my computer, or perhaps windows xp pro, has developed.

I've had this now for several months but it's not until recently that it has become a serious problem. When I boot my computer everything runs fine until it gets to the windows user login page and then I realize that neither the keyboard nor the mouse cursor work. As far as I know, this is not a problem with my keyboard or mouse since after i shutdown manually and startup again everything works fine. I can log on, enter safe mode... whatever.. eveything works normally. Then when I shut down (or restart) and boot again the same problem re-occurs. However, the computer is not frozen when this happens... It just seems to be the keyboard and mouse that dont work.

Right now i have a terrible spyware/malware/virus/trojan infection on my computer and i have been trying to get it back into decent condition but one of the detection programs that i use requires me to restart and have the program run during startup (therefore not allowing the virus to load). The program has found a trojan (maybe several) but I cannot delete it because... well, see above. The option to do this is selected when everything works, the process is done when everything doesnt work, and when i need to press a key 1-9 do choose what to do with this trojan i cant do anything.

Okay so hopefully there is some simple explination for this and if anyon... Read more

Hello, I had an issue with my Windows 8 where I was forced to reinstall it. I have completely wiped my SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. However, now it will not let me pick my boot order. It is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager as my Boot Option 1. If I use anything else, I just get a black screen with a blinking line cursor.

It didn't use to do this before I had to reinstall. I'm not sure how to fix this. It also will not let me choose F11 boot options, it always is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager.

How do I make it so I can boot from whichever boot order I want, instead of using Boot Manager?

I JUST purchased this desktop a couple weeks ago and have noticed this issue from day one. My computer at times will be working fine, and the mouse and keyboard (both of which are usb, not wireless) will stop working. Ctrl+alt+delete doesnt work either. When I press the power button it does not do anything either. I have turned off the screen saver, sleep mode, hibernate, everything like that. I have noticed it happening when I am at the computer and when I am not at the computer.

I built this desktop at Micro Center as a gaming computer. It first froze like this the same day I got it back from Micro Center where it was pieced together when I was simply downloading Goggle Chrome, Tweetdeck, simple day to day stuff I use. I would also leave the computer for a few hours, and come back to see that it has frozen as well. When this happens the screen is still on, I am just unable to do anything but do a hard reset (flipping the switch on the back). It recently happened WHILE I was logged into an MMO (WoW to be specific). I was in the middle of playing the game, and it all of a sudden froze on me. I have noticed that when it freezes like this the fans seem to speed up a little bit as well.

I have seen users post about this problem as well, but they claim their computer will restart or shut itself down within a few minutes or even seconds. My computer will not restart, it will stay frozen for hours. It is very annoying because I just spent over 2k on this desktop,... Read more

So I built my first PC recently, about 2 weeks ago, and ever since I've been having a couple of different issues.
My first issue was that my video card had a white LED occasionally blinking, indicating an "abnormal power supply", so I put in for an RMA to change it, but that didn't work, still have the blinking. I'm sending the card out for a replacement in the morning, but for the past 5 days my computer would randomly freeze while playing games, I could still hear sound but on a 3 second loop and my screen wouldn't go black, but nothing would respond, forcing me to press the restart button.

I've tried putting my old GPU in since I still have it lying around and am still having the crashes, so now I'm not even sure there is any kind of issue with the new video card.

The sysnative had an issue when running:

  HomePath \Users\Ezdis
  Userprofile C:\Users\Ezdis

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/bSfv225rwEhykXFVBQBm2j1

The GPU in the above link is my old video card as my new one is currently in a box to be sent away in the morning, my actual card is the RX580GAMING-8GB.

A:New computer, randomly freezes forcing hard reset.

What issue(s) did the Sysnative app have? There should be a folder in Documents named SysnativeFileCollectionApp -- the output of the Sysnative app.Perhaps there is enough in it for us to start. Please zip it up and attach. However, you are obviously dealing with hardware issues here. Something occurred during assembly or the parts are bad or incompatible. It could even be the motherboard.Make sure all connections in the new system are correct and secure.Regards. . .jcgriff2

woodman,
Welcome to SevenForums.

We need your help:

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
? Manufacturer and Model OR Custom build.
? ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

With Speccy, you can select with your mouse/touchpad info from the display
and paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Since my last Vista "update", about three weeks ago, I experience occasional lags in cursor movement and response, also in keyboard input. There's nothing common to the event and no warning of it occurring. I can be online, or typing, or playing a game, or the computer can be sitting there doing nothing (with just the desktop active), and suddenly moving the mouse gets no response for maybe ten seconds, when the cursor will instantly jump to the new position. Clicking anything also has a delay before any response. Typing produces nothing ...then half a sentence appears at once. The only thing I've found that clears this up is to restart windows; this irritant may recur ten minutes later or not for a couple of days.

It isn't a heat problem - CoreTemp shows about 40degC for each core, GPU-Z lists about 45 for the GPU. Task manager shows nothing amiss in processes or services. Reloading mouse software didn't help, nor did changing the mouse (from a Logitech to a Microsoft); changing from a USB to a PS2 keyboard didn't help. Avira, Malwarebytes, MSE, Spybot, and Ad-Aware all come up clean.

I bought my Lenovo yoga 300 only last month! and have probably used it 6 times mainly to play card games and a PPP for work. This is by far the worst and most frustrating laptop I've ever had! CPU is constantly at 100% the system is unbelievable slow .. almost unusable in my opinion. I'm a graphic designer and use a powerful desktop for work but bought this low budget (although  still cost 350euro)  laptop purely to take to clients for showcase and to use for pleasure- the inability  to even get a webpage open in under 2 minutes renders the system useless in my eyes!! .. So in trying to solve this problem I ran the lenovo diagnostic which red flagged something on the mother board.. I dont remember now.. and now I have lost the funtion of the keyboard and cursor. I can only enter the  laptop via number code using the on screen number pad. Very annoying!!! I have 'drained the power' as explained in another post and during reboot the cursor reappeared but didnt function and then disappeared again leaving me to log in using the on screen number pad. For a laptop I have had less than 2 months it appeaes to be faulty?? Can anyine shed any light as to what on earth is going  on with this machine.  Thanks

I think that's a laptop. If you are using the laptop's keyboard try with the touchpad disabled and/or try typing with an external keyboard.

If you are using an external mouse disconnect it while typing to see if maybe it is sending spurious signals.

How can I control the mouse cursor with my keyboard in Windows XP Pro? Sure it may not be as nice as the mouse and therefore I wouldn't use it always. Just when I code and need to do a little navigating. This way I wouldn't need to keep swaping from keyboard to mouse.

A:HOW: Use keyboard to control mouse cursor

I don't know if Win XP has the function, but go to Start, Help and search for mousekey.

In win98, you would enable it by going to accessibility options and turning it on there.

The cursor quit during using mouse or keyboard.  This had happened every time after 2 minutes approximately. When pressing the Esc / Enter or Click Mouse, now continue the point where is quit.

Appreciate any comments you may have.

mouse worked for awhile, now the mouse moves only horizontally.

While I type the cursor moves, highlights all & with the next stroke everything is

deleted.....it's driving me out of my mind!!!

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Did you try disabling the touchpad via the BIOS?

Did you try removing all pointing devices...rebooting...and see what effect that has on the touchpad?

I use Windows 8.1 in a new ACER XC-115 PC. It worked ok for a few weeks, and suddenly the keyboard did not function when I tried to open the computer. I tested with another keyboard, but the problem remains. In one of the many attempts to make it work, I somehow managed to write my password. But then everything went crazy: there appeared files that i did not call and the mouse did not respond except for the wheel and only to make things smaller or bigger. Is it a virus, and in that case, what could be done? However for a flicking moment the ELISA antivirus showed the PC was protected. Thanks in advance for you help.

Thanks for the help, I'm going crazy!

My IBM Thinkpad x60s I think is infected. I can't type anything, one or two keystrokes turns into a string of gibberish and the computer is constantly right-clicking. The mouse also sometimes turns into a little dinosaur when it's processing stuff and I know it wasn't there before. I've run my anti-virus software but nothing turns up.

I tried booting up in safe more, but my keyboard was still acting weird. The only way I was even able to log in was because the computer has a finger scanner.

any thoughts? I'm on a second computer now.
Thanks!!

Help!!!! I have a Sony Vaio laptop. Win 7 premium home edition. A month after buying the laptop this problem occurred. I had it sent to repair 3 times for hte same issue, first they did a win 7 reinstalll, then a hardrive reinstall then a reinstall of motherboard. each time i received the laptop back it worked fine for a few weeks, the last time worked fine for 3 months and then the problem occurred all over again. freezes up whether im doing sometihng or not doing anything several times a day. The only way to get out of it is to hold the power button down for about 8 seconds till it powers off. After turning on the computer everything is fine till the next freeze. This first occurred before I installed any software. My machine is clean! No malware or viruses, etc I ran malwarebytes, spybot, adaware, and avg. NOTHING! My memory checks ok, I did a check on my security with scannow, Clean. Have plenty of hardrive space, 250GB left. Ive googled my a..s off for solutions and tried everytihng, Nothing worked. Temp ok at 35-50* What can you recommend. THank you.

Noticed mouse cursor started lagging recently, even though apps seemed to work fine. I'd have problems clicking something as the mouse would be frozen for a second, then jump across the screen to catch up.
Ran Adaware Pro and Symantect AV pro, both with current updates, and nothing came up. Plus, I'm using Mozilla for my browsing.

Anyways.. couple of days ago, mouse froze near center of screen while playing a game. Got out of game with keyboard and mouse was still frozen.
Rebooted in safe mode - still frozen.
Plugged in another working mouse - still frozen.
Plugged in a serial mouse - still frozen.
Plugged in a USB mouse - said "detecting new hardware", then "hardware installation problem. hardware may not work."
Still frozen.
WTF?
I can manipulate Windows and email via keyboard, but mouse cursor is frozen on screen and unresponsive.

Please HELP!
Will gladly paypal someone with a solution besides "re-install OS".

I'm trying to recover from the black screen/blinking cursor of death, and have come to the bcd fixing stage. Looks like this, from a few sources on the net:

Bootrec.exe

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

c:

cd boot

attrib bcd -s -h -r

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /RebuildBcd

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

However I don't seem to have a c:/boot folder! What gives? Machine is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installed on a 64-bit SSD with a 500gb normal hdd as backup storage (currently unplugged).

Thanks in advance

Hi there, It's me again,

I've been having strange problem with the keboard cursor keys. I 'm not sure but I think when I click one of them twice fast enough, that key stays active although I'm not pressing it. It deactivates when I click it again. I am quite sure its not a hardware problem. And I checked Control Panel, and the opion for 'Sticky Keys' is not checked.

Appreciate any help.

A:Strange problem with Keyboard cursor keys

I don't guess you've tried another keyboard have you? I was going to suggest you check the sticky keys, but obviously that's not the problem . Maybe try enabling it, then disabling it.

If you have a keyboard that comes with drivers (for hot keys or something like that) try reinstalling them.

I'm running an Acer Aspire with Windows 7 that I bought back in February. Since I've owned it, I've had an intermittent issue wherein the mouse and keyboard inputs slow way down: the pointer will "stutter" when I move the mouse and there's a small delay to all my keyboard inputs. Just for s&g, I opened up the Performance tab in Task Manager the last time the problem cropped up (about 20 minutes ago), and my CPU usage shot up to 50% or more when I moved the mouse; normally it's about 20%.

In any case, simply restarting gets rid of the problem, at least for a few days or so, sometimes longer.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this and how to fix it?

While typing on any keyboard, any version of Windows - XP, Win 7 or 8 or 8.1, all version of Windows ... while I am typing the cursor on its own travels elsewhere on the page. By the time I glance up it has moved somewhere else and has chopped off the word in half. Here is an example that just occurred:

"(By the time I look up I have had my word choere pped in half, located somewh)"

This even occurs when typing on my BBY Q10! Strangely I can find no reason or correlation except the Windows versions.

Appreciate any diagnosis and fix. Debra

A:KEYBOARD & WIN7 Typing and cursor moves on its own

You are using your laptop, most likely your hands are touching the trackpad and is moving the cursor.

When using a laptop, I push the button to disable the trackpad while I type so I do not have to worry about moving the mouse. Either that, or start adjusting your hands away from the mouse. Typing correctly actually avoids the mouse pad.

Hi, it's not just laptops... my PC does the same thing, I have tried different keyboards and it doesn't seem to help. I have an Alienware, and their tech support have no idea what it can be. My sticky keys option is also off (I have fiddled around with different options to see if it makes a difference but it doesn't. I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit, I went back to my XP OS but this also made no difference, I repartitioned my PC as well to no avail. I've updated a few misc drivers including my BIOS, but both keyboard I have don't come with drivers, so I have no idea. Also when the problem happens I get an internal 'beep' from my tower, so my PC must think something isn't right. It's even happening whist I'm typing this, except the key stroke isn't registered and I have to press the key again whereas while I'm playing games it plays as if the key is pressed even when it isn't and I have to press it again to get it to stop. Any help is VERY appreciated as it's getting really annoying.

Hi, I have a HP Envy 23 and recently upgraded to Windows 10 and now have the black screen issue which I can see is very common. As soon as the machine is powered up I have a black screen. Neither the mouse or keyboard are working so cannot try the fix of typing in the password and trying to log in. There is no HDMI input/output so I cannot attach another monitor without purchasing a VGA to USB adapter. Would anyone know of a fix for this? Thanks Dan

Hi guys, need your help!

The cursor scrolls automtically, not in all programs - but in youtube it puts the volume up to max, or in the search bar it scrolls all the way to the right - in photoshop it keeps scrolling the window to the max right, or in notepad it scrolls all the way down to the bottom. Even on the settings in windows 10 I find it difficult to click on what I want as it scrolls down to the bottom straight away

I ve tried a different keyboard, also tried the keyboard testor to see if one of the keys were switched on somehow, and I ve unplugged the mouse and it still happens. So I am out of ideas!

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks in advance!

A:Keyboard not working and laptop cursor won't move

Do you mean stuck or freezes on the login password screen? Have you tried running it in safemode and does it freezes also when your only in the BIOS utility or setup? Any noticeable changes, updates before it occured? It's also possible that there is a hard drive problem in your case.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

I have a Gateway laptop with windows 8...it shut itself down and restored...it has done this before with no issues. The computer loaded and is at the start page where all the apps are listed. I cannot use the cursor...it doesn't show up. When it goes to sleep usually I can hit the space bar and it responds..but nothing...seem the whole key board is frozen. I have tried the function keys for the cursor and nothing...I have taken my mouse from my other computer to try to use it in the lap top and nothing...I have turned the computer off and on..still nothing. I use my laptop for work and I am frustrated now that I can't get in to it. It seems locked somehow or stuck. When I hit the F1 for help it does open the desktop page and I see the help box but I can't click on it. The only way to wake the computer up to see the screen I unplug or replug the power cord in. Other than that it seems to go back to sleep.

I have googled and went to so many places to get help and nothing.

Thank You

A:Solved: Please Help! Gateway Windows 8 Cursor/Keyboard Not working

Solved Myself:

Here's what I did.
Turned laptop off and back on again
While on the windows loading screen hit Alt + F10 (held down alt and tapped F10 several times)
Took me to the refresh page - Used tab and enter to choose
Tried to refresh without removing my files (DID NOT WORK)
Repeated first 2 steps
At refresh screen tab down to advance and did a full reload which took comp back to beginning settings
Chose all my features etc as I did when it was new
Plugged in mouse before completing the walk through for windows new settings to load(AT THE SCREEN WHERE I HAD TO CHECK THE BOX TO AGREE TO TERMS)

MOUSE FINALLY WORKED

Comp loaded fine cursor still did not work
Hit F6 (Not function + F6)
Finally worked

Reinstalled my things like: skype, firefox, Free Open office by Apache

Lesson: Back up everything on external hard drive at least once a week or more depending on how often computer is used. Since I use it for work I will back up files more than once a week just in case I have to do a complete restore I will still have all my files to download back to my laptop. Sometimes if I am in a hurry I email the document or file, song, whatever to my email...that way if I didn't back it up I can always access my email from any computer.

Thanks!

Is there a way to move the focus to check boxes on websites and in programs without using the mouse?

Let's say you're in the options menu of a program like Firefox or MS Office, and there are options with boxes you can check or uncheck. I want to be able to navigate to the boxes using the keyboard instead of the mouse.

What I find is, you usually can move the focus to the item description (i.e. highlight the text) using Tab, but that only gets to the item description, not the check box. Which is odd, because why would anyone ever need to highlight the text in a program's menus?

Once in a while it does work - you can tab to the check box and check/uncheck using something like shift-click. But I can't remember where that works. Maybe MS Office but I don't have it on this computer.

I am on a laptop, where it would save a lot of moving the mouse around. It might not be much of a time-saver on a desktop.
