Help needed - Excel was working fine, now can't open

Q: Help needed - Excel was working fine, now can't open

I have always used outlook express as my email programme, but today, I opened MicroSoft Outlook as I thought I might change. As this was i believe pre-installed in my 2 year old laptop, I updated the programm through the links that are contained within it. Since doing so, I now cannot open my Excel programme.

First a Windows Installer box appears, then I am asked to insert the Microsoft Office 200 SR-1 Standard disk and click ok. I don't have this disk, and I don't know why I am having this difficulty. I would be grateful if anyone can help me with this annoying problem.

Many thanks
Johnny

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All,

Hope you can help me.

I have a problem where I have installed Office 2003 basic edition.
Excel and outlook open fine but word takes ages 2-3 minutes ish.
I have tried deleting and renaming the normal.dot file and then word opens fine but as soon as i close it and try to open again im in the same predicament. I have uninstalled and re installed office with separate disks too incase it was a dodgy disk but had no joy.

Really at a loose end of what to try?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hey,

I've been doing some online gaming (world of warcraft), and I kept getting these Error#131 issues. This would cause the game files to become corrupted and then I would have to repair, or reinstall. The WoW tech site says that chronic error #131 messages are either a Hard drive, Ram, or Motherboard issue.

Running the Windows Vista memory diagnostic tool has turned up some odd results, the initial test with a 1gb stick in slot #1 and a 1gb stick in slot #2 came back with errors. I then removed the ram from slot 2 and ran the test on slot 1 with 1 stick of ram.... no errors. I did the same with the other stick in slot 1.....no errors. this lead me to believe that it was slot#2 giving me the issue so I moved the ram from slot 2 to slot 3, thus having 1gb of ram in slot 1 and 1gb of ram in slot 3. After a little while......error#131 appeared.

So I then tested both sticks in slots 1 and 3 together and came back with ram errors, I then tested both sticks in slot #1, and then again in slot #2 and both tests came back fine. Any ideas on what this issue could be? I know both sticks are the same brand, speed, totally identical.

the target Excel files are all based on the same template
there is one worksheet in each of the target Excel files

in the target files, the rows should be copied from the first available empty row, going down

My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.
Please help me out.

A:My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. I am not sure exactly at what point it happened but I recently found that the touch screen on my Elite X2 1011 was not working. The pen still functions normally. When checking the pen and touch settings I can only configure the pen settings and only "Pen support" is listed in view pen and touch settings. The touch screen used to work in both the original Windows 8.1 and then also after upgrading to Windows 10. There have been no error messages and the event logs do not seem to indicate any problems; it is as though the machine has just forgotten it is a touch screen. I have tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling both Windows 10, and going back to Windows 8.1 to no avail. I really loved this little device but ease of use is cut rather drastically without the touch functionality. Has anyone else had a problem like this and have a solution? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys, i just installed a new CPU today along with a 12cm chasis fan which is connected to my motherboard, and also another fan connected to the PSU(4pin molex).

The computer runs absolutely fine and the cpu installed fine but when i press the button to start my computer for the first time, it comes on for literally 1sec(enough time to see the light come on briefly) before turning off again for aprox 3seconds. After the 3 seconds it then decides to start up and runs fine as normal.

Any info on this would be very much appreciated as im hoping its nothing and not a problem in the making.

Thanks

Hi,

I have run into a situation and I hope someone knows how to solve it....

I use excel to create reports for my program.

In Win XP it all works fine.

When I try it on Vista or Windows 7 the report generation is very slow.

Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?

I'm not doing anything special, just adding data to cells with code like:

oSheet:Cells( nRow, nCol ):Value := "Some Data"
(xHarbour/Fivewin)
Is there a tweak that can be done in Vista/Win7 to solve this type of problem?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff.

I have sort of an odd problem. I have a desktop computer that is connect to the internet wirelessly. Everything works fine there. I also have an xbox360 connected to the desktop via an Ethernet cable. I use this connection primarily to stream movies from my computer to the xbox. Today in the middle of a movie the movie stopped playing and gave me an error saying xbox isn't connected to the computer any more.
I checked the physical connection and everything was fine. I looked at my desktop (running windows xp) and noticed my LAN connection wasn't properly running. It said I have limited or no connectivity. So I tried repairing it, renewing it, disabling and re-enabling it. Nothing worked. In fact I get this error: "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I also noticed I have a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address, if that helps at all:
EDIT: Forgot to mention I also reinstalled the driver for the LAN card.

ASUS Notebook G60Vx Series

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
A few days ago my internet suddenly stopped working. I plugged in the ethernet cord and everything worked fine. Checking the properties in the device manager showed the device was working properly, I also tried resetting it to make sure it was enabled but it did not work.

Upon troubleshooting, the "Windows Network Diagnostic" said the problems was that the Wireless adapter was not turned on. Using the switch on the front of the laptop as well as the function keys does nothing. Usually a graphic pops up showing if the WiFi is on or off, changinging transparent to show the WiFi is disabled. Now when I turn the switch on it always appears transparent, effectively going from off to off

So I know the computer reads both the function keys and the switch on the front but both methods never actually turns the adapter on. I just finished a system restore and nothing has changed

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

A:Wifi not working on ASUS laptop, LAN working fine

Maybe the switch or adapter is defective. Some other ideas ...

Do you have an ASUS utility to also turn the wireless on/off? (I have an HP utility on one of my laptops that will individually control the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if the physical switch is on.)

In Device Manager right click on the adapter - Properties - Advanced tab. Sometimes there is a Property in there that allows turning the adapter on/off.

If the card is easily accessible through a cover on the laptop's bottom remove and carefully and firmly replace the card several times to fix any potential looseness or corrosion problems.

This is driving me mad - so I would be really grateful if someone could help. I am making a music video in Windows Movie Maker. I had a particular scene in the movie starting at exactly 2:50:00. I did some editing of the scenes before this and as a result this scene was pushed back to a later time. My plan was that I would shorten the length of the scene immediately preceding it by shorteneing it at the end (because this wouldn't affect the story of the video). However try as I might I cannot get the scene (that was pushed back) to start at exactly 2:50:00 anymore - I can get it at 2:50:04 or 2:49:96 but it just skips over 2:50:00 for some unknown reason. I can get it at 2:50:08 so I don't understand why it won't go to 2:50:00.

because this is a music video the music needs to synchronise exactly with the music - so this is a problem. Would be very pleased if someone could help. Is there anyway to get finer frame control over where I edit the movie. (I have zoomed in as far as possible). Thank you very much.

My computer that has been working just fine since I built a year ago, just slowed to a crawl yesterday. NOD32 doesn't find anything, Malwarebytes doesn't find anything. Just opening my email program, or a browser, takes a minute or more, or opening any program at all. It's like something is using all my resources, but I don't think anything is. A friend thinks it's a missing or corrupt Windows system file, but I ran the System File Checker, and it didn't find anything wrong.I also did a couple passes with memtest86.
It works fine in safe mode, which I'm assuming rules out hardware. So....no glaring indication of malware, runs fine in safe mode.
I tried system restore also, and it did no good. What was weird about that is, when I selected a restore point, and it restarted, it went to a blue screen, and just hung there. I finally just did a hard shut down, and when it restarted, it had restored to the point I selected. No change though.
A couple times now, when I've restarted it, my desktop will come back up, and I'm still seeing the little spinning blue wheel, a rectangular section in the top left corner of my desktop goes black....and then that goes away after a minute. Pretty strange.
I'm at a loss, and really don't want to reinstall Windows, but that seems to be my only option that I know of.
If anyone can help, or has any suggestions, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

A:Computer excruciatingly slow, fine in safe mode. Help needed.

1) First please run checkdisk as follows to address any potential issues caused by your hard shutdown:  right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

2) Next, let's try a selective startup since the computer runs normally in safe mode:
Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Running Windows Vista Premium Home Edition.

I have an Excel 2003 spreadsheet.that I originally created on Excel Office Professional Edition 2003. Also, have Excel 2007 Home and Student Edition installed. I uninstalled the Excel 2003 software, but now when I clik on this created Excel 2003 spreadsheet with Excel 2003 it will not open. It says there is an invalid path. I reinstalled Excel 2003 and it opens. I tried to save this as an .xlsx extension and then uninstalled Excel 2003. It wouldn't open. So something is occurring here. On other Excel 2003 created spreadsheets, they open without issue.

Then I have a program with an .exe extension. It needs to open using Excel 2007. With both Excel 2003 and Excel 2007, it will not open. It freezes and then I get an error message saying it cannot open with another Excel other than 2007. If I right clik on the .exe program, there is no "Open with". I even tried opening a blank Excel 2007 spreadsheet and then cliking on "Open". but it is a bunch of gibberish. My IT person says you can't open the program that way, You have to launch it as an .exe program using Excel 2007.

Any ideas on what is going on? By the way, I have both Excel versions on my laptop running Windows XP and I do not have these issues at all.

A:Solved: Some Excel 2003 & Excel 2007 applications won't open on Windows Vista

Hi there,

If I said I was confused that'd be an understatement I think. You cannot open executable files (*.exe) with Excel. Recognized file types are things like .xls, .xla, (for 2007) .xlsx, .xlsb, .xlsm, etc. I don't know what your exe file is and I'm not sure I wanna know, but it certainly doesn't open in Excel. What is it exactly? If you don't know I wouldn't open it. Or if someone told you to open it with Excel then it's probably a virus. Unless I'm missing something here.

With the file in question which won't open, assuming it's not this strange and unknown exe file you're talking about, sounds like the file may have been corrupted. Does it open on any other machine? And if you uninstall Excel 2003, did you re-install 2007? It seems strange. I would try cleaning out your application and reinstalling 2007 fresh. You can't install 2003, then 2007, then take off 2003 and put it back on, you're gonna get things screwed up. I bet your registry doesn't know which way to turn here. Some good info on it can be found here...

http://officearticles.com/misc/best_install_procedures_for_microsoft_office.htm

Also, I would highly recommend you completely uninstall all versions, and I'm talking a deep cleaning, then reinstall. For that deep cleaning, take a look at this article (which I'd highly recommend you do) and then reinstall...

Problem in Excel 2010 [but revives a Closed TSG thread for Excel 2007]

The "Personal Macro Workbook" is a file called Personal.XLSB
The Personal.XLSB file is in the correct location /XLSTART/
The file properties option "Opens with Excel" is selected.
The file contains a (freshly re-made) macro.
(It also contained the same steps macro before it was deleted

When Excel is opened, the Personal.XLSB DOES NOT OPEN WITH it.

Because the Personal Macro Workbook does not open,
- existing macros do not function,
- nor can new macros be recorded

Same not-opening result, whether opened by clicking on
- Excel, in the Programs list or
- a desktop shortcut to a specific Excel file

However, the Personal.XLSB file can be opened and the macro made functional
by manually opening that file where it is stored in /XLSTART/

An unexplained workaround was identified in the closed thread.

*rename the Personal.XLSB to Personal.XLSA

I find this workaround effective.
The Personal.XLSA file opens with Excel and the macros are available.
But the file seems to be grayed out when viewed with Explorer in /XLSTART/

However, I do not like using workarounds, as they can cause trouble later.
I find that the "open with" setting was changed when the extension was changed
The setting is now "Opens with: Windows Shell Common"

I would appreciate an explanation how to make Personal.XLSB open as it should.

Ok this is a weird problem I ran into in the past with Word, and I'm having trouble finding information on it, because of the details involved.

What's happening is if i load up Excel and then goto file/open and load an excel document it comes up.

If I goto Start/Documents and try to load it from there Excel seems to hang, also if i Browse my computer and goto any excel file same thing happens, and of course it happens over a network share as well.

I didn't give it more then a minute or 2 to come up (We are talking small Excel files here nothing huge) On the last computer this happened on with Word, the documents would eventually come up, but it would take 5 minutes to load this way.

Anything I load withen Excel (Meaning I load excel and then goto File/Open, comes up instantly)

Windows knows how to handle the excel files and what program to load them with, I tried deleteing the (Is it called a mime?) entry in windows that tells excel how to handle the .XLS file, then held shift and Right clicked a .XLS file to re-enter it into Windows, just in case Windows wasn't opening it right but this had the same effect.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I am using an ASP.NET 2.0 web application using the Interop assembly pointing to the Microsoft.Excel 12.0 COM to open and write to a spreadsheet.

I have set the permissions for the DCOM to allow NETWORK SERVICE to open the Excel application, but when I try to open the actual file I get Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A03EC.

I have changed the website directory permissions to allow NETWORK SERVICE full access to the folder and I still cannot open the file.

Thoughts?

I had the same problem which can be found in this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/814855-excel-2007-personal-xlsb-wont.html

I have also solved it in the same way (Renaming my personal.xlsb file to personal.xlsa)

What wasn't discovered in the last thread is *why* this works. Any ideas?

My personal file has been starting up fine for years now. And the macros have run nearly every day. What could have caused this sudden change?

A:Excel Personal.XLSB does not open on starting up excel

I would guess that since .xlsa is not a recognized file type - and specifically is not .xlsb (which is a recognized file type) or .xlsm (also recognized and this was tried by the person in your link), 2007 treats .xlsa as simply .xls and loads it. This is merely a guess, however, but if it is true, it raises some interesting questions about security....

I have a similar problem as the previous posting but my problem is with Excel not Word. When trying to open any Excel file I receive the message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program." The only way I can access an Excel file is to open "All Programs," choose "Microsoft Office" folder, choose "Microsoft Office Excel 2007" icon, choose "Open" folder, and double click on desired file.

My computer is a three month old custom unit built with Windows 7 Professional. I am using Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. There have been no problems until this week.

Thanks for any help,

Hi,

On a PC in our office, there are a number of Excel 97 files which have a problem.
I think they were originally created on a Windows NT, or possibly even Win3.1 machine, resided on a floppy and were eventually given to someone in our office to enter data.
The files are stored in the My Documents folder on a W95 machine.

These files can only be opened by starting Excel and using the Open command and locating them.
If I try to open them directly from the My Documents folder, I get a series of error mesgs, splitting the name of the file and path:

Cannot find file C:\My.xls
Cannot find file Documents.xls
Cannot find file \Cold.xls
Cannot find file Repairs.xls

and the file refuses to open.

If I save the file to disk and try running it from another PC, it says "file may be read only", which it is not.

The file contains no VB code and no add-ins are loaded.

I also tried copying all the data from the file into a new file. This worked until I moved the old file out of My Documents and renamed the new file "Cold Repairs", upon doing so, the same errors occurred again.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Gram

I'm not sure if it because the files are 2003 or not? When I try to open them an error message appears stating, "...the file you are trying to open is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source..." These are my files. The interesting thing is that if I try to open the same file that I have saved within the last year (before I got 2007) then I can do it? That is, I have a cache folder of files that I go get to do calculations then save in a new job folder. The ones in the new job folder will open (also 2003), but the ones in the original cache will not? I would truly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

He has done a hard reboot, and after this has turn on normally and booted up in safe mode not getting any better. How can he fix this? Thanks

Hi everyone,

I generally use Firefox and have Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I have auto-update and I believe the problems may have started after installing a security update.

Yesterday something quite odd started happening. I was able to open certain pages without any problem, whilst others (I think pages with high cookie counts - Hotmail, the Dell website) simply would not open irrespective of how long I left them loading. The top of the window would change name - "google" would become "sign in" for hotmail, for example - but the page itself would never load.

Here's what I've done so far and the results:

1. Full disk virus scan and rebooted a few million times. Turns out I had a trojan of sorts, which is now deleted, but no improvement.

2. Ran search and destroy, which found DSO Exploit lodged in my internet explorer current files. After visiting a load of forums, all of which said that said spyware was not harmful so long as one has the latest security updates (which I do), I attempted to follow these forums' advice to get rid of the spyware anywhere, though I don't think I did so successfully.

3. Uninstalled internet explorer, which wouldn't open the same pages either. Over the previous two days, internet explorer for the first time since I had it was being overrun by pop-ups, and at some point my PC had refused to shut down due to one of them. I ought to have virus-scanned immediately, but I wasn't able to.

Hello,
I've been searching this forum and the internet at large for a long time, and I've never seen anyone else report this particular problem. It's really weird, and I'll try to describe it adequately, at the risk of trying your patience. Hopefully my hardware configuration will appear at the bottom of this post, so I won't repeat it here.

In the past, I've always used backup software to keep my previous notebook (Dell XPS running XP Pro) backed up wirelessly. I purchased this Dell Studio 15 notebook in August of 2009, and have never been able to back up over the WiFi link. It backs up fine on wired Ethernet, however. I've recently decided to keep my files on a Netgear ReadyNAS duo, so that I can access them from multiple computers and keep them off the notebook, reasoning that at least the files will be protected even if I don't have recent backups of the entire system.

If I open a file over the WiFi, either by double-clicking, or using an application's File-Open command, nothing happens for about 1.5 to 2 minutes, and then the file opens fine. I've used both Resource Monitor and Process Monitor to verify that nothing is happening on the network adapter during that long delay, (that I can find, at least), and a sudden burst of network activity occurs when the file actually opens. If I double-click on an Excel file, the splash screen gives me a notification that it's opening drive\path\filename 0% during that long delay. Browsing network machines and folder contents seems... Got a problem with Word and Excel 2007.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Other info:

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Thanks

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

I'm running Windows 10, and Excel 2013. I just upgraded to Win 10. Before I did so, I had no problems at all with Excel. Now that I've upgraded to Win 10, Excel no longer remembers my "recently opened workbooks".

I have gone to file/options/advanced numerous times, and, under "display", clicked on "show this number of recent workbooks" and also clicked the check box next to "quickly display this number of recent workbooks".

Each time I do that, while I am still using Excel, the display of recent workbooks is what I want. But invariably, after closing Excel, after I log off, then restart Windows, the next time I start Excel the check box is blank and there are no recently opened workbooks at all on the Excel start page!

Anyone have any clues what's wrong or how to make Excel do what I want?

Thx.
