Unable to update BIOS because UEFI password is unknown.

Q: Unable to update BIOS because UEFI password is unknown.

HP Support Assistant keeps wanting me to upgrade my system's BIOS. I purchased this "Display Model" machine several years ago from Ebay. Early on I discovered that I did not have the BIOS password. I saw references on your support forums indicating there was software to bypass or reset the BIOS password, but since my machine was working to my satisfaction, I did not pursue this issue further. Since HP Support Assistant keeps insisting on an upgrade, I suspect I should stop ignoring the issue. Can someone help me access my BIOS for the upgrade? Thanks, Kevin Fowler

Preferred Solution: Unable to update BIOS because UEFI password is unknown.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Platform:
Windows 10 Pro
GA-X79-UD5 rev 1.0
E5-2670
40GB DDR3 Quad
512 SSD
GTX 1060

Scenario:
Upgraded Video Card from GTX 560 Ti to GTX 1060 Strix, machine boots but no video output or just black/blank screen.

Did a bit of online research and realize that two ways of fixing this
1. Change PCI setting to Legacy in BIOS/UEFI
2. Update to latest BIOS.

I decided to try and update BIOS to latest BETA (13w) using @bios from Windows. Everything went ok, reboots fine and still does now with Windows loading no problem, BUT i can't get to BIOS/UEFI???

All i get is the UEFI empty blue screen, no menus/options, just blank screen...

So i thought maybe i can reverse back to previous BIOS from windows but program wouldn't allow this. I tried sticking BIOS file in USB but the problem is i can't get to BIOS.

I Have tried running backup BIOS as board has two, but still same problem.

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... Hello together, i have a problem with our System X3650 M4 Server, Machinetype Model: 5462G2G. I downloaded an imm and an uefi update file from the lenovo website.First i updated imm through the imm2 website remotly.Update did go as planned, i restarted th imm2 and after about 5 minutes the new imm2 was working an accessible,Then i tried to update the uefi bios from version 1.01 to 2.31 , also via the IMM2 -> Servermangement -> Server Firmware -> Firmware upgrade option.I Uploaded the new file lnvgy_fw_uefi_tce128i-2.31_anyos_32-64.upd, then started the upgrade process. It went through fine, and after the sucess information i was prompted to restart the OS.After 30 minutes, the server was still in System State = running in uefi mode. When i checked back to the server management -> Server firmware rab, it said UEFI Primary, Status pending, Version 2.31.Then i "powered off" the server, and restarted it 5 minutes later. All status boxes are green, but system status is still in "system running in UEFI " Mode, it wont start with the OS (VMware) Does anyone have an idea how to fix the problem. The Server also has a secondary bank with the old bios version  1.01 , how can i switch back to this backup BIOS? Many thanks in advance, i am getting a bit desperate here. The server should be operational tomorrow morning again.

Yes, you can reset your ASUS Bios or UEFI password if you forgot it. (works on UEFI based laptops at least... don't know if it will work on everything)

This only works if you can boot into windows (or other OS) ! It will reset you BIOS or UEFI password if you have forgotten it.

- Boot into windows and change the date to 2002/01/02,

- Reboot while while hitting F2 to get into the BIOS / UEFI, when the enter password window appears hit "Alt + r", a "Enter rescue password" window will appear, with 2002/01/02 date showing (if not the code won't work), enter the following rescue password : ALAA4ABA

- Done ! You're in the BIOS / UEFI

- Change back the date and other settings to their correct values in the BIOS / UEFI, save settings, and you're good.

Thanks to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZfFcHtYIRw for the solution !

Hi- I have been slowly struggling with a password issue with my Ideapad U530 over the last few months.  The problem is, when I try to acces the BIOS via the Novo button, I am asked for a "system password". However, I did NOT set this password, so I cannot access the BIOS. In terms of other passwords, such as Windows User/Admin, and boot, there is no problem. The only unique thing that I have done with this machine which I could think of the <might> be related to the BIOS password issue, is that I used the Novo button to access the built-in restore tool (I forget what Lenovo calls it exaclty, but it is a system restore application), and I told the machine to re-image itself back to the built-in, out-of-box image. This process worked fine, though, and logic would tell me that this c/would <not> affect the BIOS. Has anyone else run into this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for reading and/or replying. -Chris p.s. - USB booting appears to be disabled. Actually, that was why I first tried to access the BIOS ...to enable USB booting. So, my ability to troubleshoot may be heavily limited by my inability to boot to the internal hybrid HD. p.p.s - the machine is under warranty until September of this year. I've spoken twice with Lenovo support, who were unable to help me. They mentioned the possibility of removing the SMOC battery, though I believe that this will not work since it is the year 2015. A:unknown "system password" (aka BIOS password) on Ideapad U530

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of your problems.  With a laptop, removing the battery will not clear a BIOS related password.  That only works with desktop models.  Unfortunately forum rules prohibit further discussion on how to circumvent the BIOS password.  This is due to the ease in which laptops can be stolen.  I would suggest contacting Best Buy again and see if they can further assist you especially if the laptop you purchase had been a floor display.  Otherwise the only remedy to the password problem would be to replace the motherboard.

For years I have used Terabyte Image for LINUX to make image backups of my systems. The backup software resides on a thumb drive such that if I restart the computer with the thumbdrive plugged in the computer boots to the OS on the thumbdrive where I can then select what action I want to take. I completely trust this software and it has proven to be 100% reliable and surely would prefer to use it on my new X1 too. I just took delivery of an X1 Yoga Gen4 and the first thing I wanted to do is to make an image of the X1. Unfortunately the thumbdrive will not boot the X1...looks like about 4-5 lines of the thumbdrive LINUX boot code will display and then locks up with a black screen until I restart. From what I gather during my web searching my problem seems to be caused by the fact that the X1 is using a UEFI BIOS which precludes using anything other than approved boot software. I tried to see if I could change the X1 to legacy boot mode but it appears that it's current configuration of UEFI is greyed out and there is a note that says "*Unselectable for Kernel DMA Protection". Somebody please tell me there is a proper method to configure the X1 to boot from my thumbdrive...I can't believe there wouldn't be an  "approved" workaround for this issue. Any help will be most appreciated...

No workaround.  It's telling you what you need to do.  Turn off kernel DMA protection.  BIOS -> Security -> Virtualization.

A:G700 - BIOS/UEFI update

There is no BIOS update on your support page, thus the 2013  version is it.
Your machine is a outside of US model, probably shipped with win 7, thus Lenovo does not support it  with win 10 OS.

The Tuesday updates were standard Microsoft updates, ie black Tuesday.

If Heatnleed, Foreshadow are Security exposures (CVE), I would not expect Lenovo to issue your machine a new BIOS update.   They can answer that question.

Hello, My laptop L460 has been bricked by a BIOS update from 1.33 to 1.35. I was updating it from Windows, and the update looked like it went through normally. The laptop has reboted to "DOS" screen where it updated BIOS and EC firmware, just like it should, then it rebooted again, but never booted up after that. The screen is always black. Laptop doesn't react to "Fn" buttons, (lignts on mute, and "turn off mic" buttons don't come on).I've tried disconnecting CMOS battery, but that didn't help.As soon as I connect power supply the PC turns on, but stays with the black screen. It can be only turned of by a very long press on a power buuton.Has anyone successfully updated to 1.35? It's not my first BIOS update on Thinpad (did more that 100 of those), but the first failed one, so I suspect that the Updater is somehow broken rather than me doing something wrong. I noticed that the flasher in that "DOS" mode had year 2018 in it's copyright, while it hs been 2016 before, so I wonder could it be that Lenovo bundled incorrect flasher tool with the 1.35? Do you have any idea if there is something that I could do to try to boot to emergency flasher, to revert to previous version, or something like that?

Hi

Satellite C850-F0055 laptop

I am trying to figure out how to access the boot menu at power on.
I have tried f2 & f12, f2+fn & f12+fn, tried holding the keys, tapping the keys
holding for 1 second etc, I have tried all the f keys as well, tried esc, backspace
ctr+ del nothing works.
what happens when I boot up, within 1 second 'Toshiba Innovation' screen appears
and then proceeds to load Windows 8.1.
I can access BIOS/UEFI via charms-pc settings and navigate to UEFI and get in that
way but that won't help if I need safe mode.
My settings are:- ODD/USB/HDD, boot speed set to 'normal', Secure boot disabled
I have a dual boot system with Windows/Linux.
If I put a boot disk in and power up, the boot option is totally ignored but with the disk still in
and Windows loaded and I access UEFI via the above route, enter UEFI and exit again
immediately the disk bursts into life and loads the disk as is supposed to happen at start.

I have not sure where to go now so any help will be appreciated

Cheers Rozzer

So anyone out there. Please HELP. I'll be eternally greatful to you.

I've performed so many BIOS updates over the years, including on this machine, and never had a single one fail. Until now.

The machine is a M92p tower, i7-3770, Type 3212. I applied the 9SKT99USA (Flash from operating system version). It seemed to start out OK, went thru at least one reboot, displayed a step in yellow text, then went to "Updating BIOS...." at the bottom of the screen, then froze. Now, when I try to start it will display "lenovo" and that's it.

I tried the clear CMOS thing with the jumper change. It beeped twice. Unfortunately, when I restart I get the same result as above.

Is there any hope?

Thanks in advance.

is it possible to update uefi bios without having a windows installation, e.g. from the bios itself using a usb stick? in the same fashion, is it possible to discard the criptographic key of ssd form within the bios, without external software? if not, these both seem fairly standard features, why are they not implemented?

I have three P8Z77-V Deluxe mobos. I went to check the software and firmware and found a NEW dropdown for Win8 64 bit today. There was also a new UEFI BIOS out at the same time with no description of what changed.

Check to see if your mobo manufacturer is putting out new stuff...

A:ASUS just put a Win8 dropdown for my mobo plus a new UEFI BIOS update.

I checked on ASUS site for my system now, no Windows 8 in the drop down :<

I checked for the Mobo "P6X58D-E", the laptop "N65VZ" and for the Mobo "E45M1-I DELUXE"

Hi! Yesterday I updated my bios from F.26 to F.29. What made me switch was the "Note: HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version. " Apparently some major security issues were fixed so i downloaded the installer and ran it, everything went fluently as it seemed. Last thing it did was writing boot block or something and then it rebooted and i was prompted with: Boot Device Not FoundPlease Install an operating system on your hard diskHard Disk (3F0)F2 System Diagnostics For more information please visit: hp.com/go/techcenter/startup Did the Diagnostic Tests - Everything passed (memory, hdd) Restored Factory Default from Bios. Put windows 8 installer onto USB drive. Rebooted and then pushed f9 to get into Boot Options Menu. There was nothing. The boot options menu was clear. Thought I could simply do startup repair from the installer but no, can't boot off the usb stick (Sandisk Cruzer Blade 16GB). Also, I changed the boot order from  the BIOS, it still failed to boot. Then I switched legacy mode to enabled. Now I could boot off the USB stick, then I tried to fix the bootloader from command prompt to switch back to uefi mode. Rebooted and it still doesn't boot from UEFI mode.  UEFI Boot Order from bios looks like this:Internal CD/DVD ROM DriveUSB Diskette on Key/USB Hard DiskUSB CD/DVD ROM DriveOS boot Manager! A:Boot Device Not Found after BIOS update in UEFI mode, HP G6...

Im not 100 percent sure its the right forum for this. Anyway, im writing this from a ubuntu live usb and legacy mode is enabled. Currently copying stuff over from my windows partition, everything works good. Im hoping that things will get working again after formatting the whole drive and i can install windows from scratch under uefi mode... Im hoping it was the windows installation messing with the other bootable devices under uefi.

A friend of mine has given me her netbook that she had sitting in a box for over a year because she didn't know what the bios password was. I have the box it came with when it was brand new and everything. I can't get into the actual bios or the os because it has a password that no one seems to know. Is there away to reset this or get around and or get rid of it? Anything helps because I have no idea what to do with this thing.

I'm new to UEFI and after a failed BIOS update, I removed and completely reformatted the HDD on another machine, wiping out the UEFI partition. So now I cannot load Dell Recovery to re-flash/repair the BIOS.
I have completed all the steps for notebook computers as suggested on Dell Support here: BIOS Recovery 2 options on a Dell PC or Tablet (http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/4/SLN300716/en)
I formatted a bootable external USB key with a copy of the BIOS package properly renamed as instructed. However, when I use the CTRL + Esc key combination and power up the computer, the system does not boot to Dell Recovery, but instead the power LED flashes a 3,3 code (3 amber flashes, 3 white flashes) which indicates "Recovery Image Not Found" according to the Dell Knowledge Base. I presume this code is given because it cannot find the Dell Recovery application since it (as well as the entire UEFI partition) is now gone after I reformatted the HDD.
So, I know what the problem is, I just don't know what to do at this point to fix it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
