Preferred Solution: finding files or folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Having mastered XP and previous M/S OS's over the years, I'm floored at the complexity and confusion of 8.1, and if there was ANY alternative to MicroSoft, I would gladly take it and pay for it.

I'm an author. In XP I had my files and folders. Now, I have no idea where my files (Word, etc.) are going. I am finding my files in:

This PC/DocumentsHomegroup/(my name)/pc/Documents/c:Users/(my name)Homegroup/(my name)/pc/Documents/c:Users/(my name)/SkydriveOneDrive/DocumentsDesktop/(my name)/Documents

When I save a Word document, it defaults to something called:
(my name)'s OneDrive/Documents

but it calls it:
One Drive-Personal/Skydrive/Documents

Could someone give me some advice re: how to just have one set of files and folders, like I had in XP? I'd gladly pay you ...

Also, I had heard that by clicking in the upper left corner of the screen, I could get to an area more like the State section of XP, but I am not finding this.

THANK YOU - Tony in Arizona

A:Finding my folders and files

The actual folders are in C:\Users\(your user name)\. The Libraries will link to those folders. HomeGroup does too I think, I don't use HomeGroup and always leave the HomeGroup that's created automatically so there is no HomeGroup. If you open the Charms Bar (Windows logo key + C), click Settings > Change PC Settings > One Drive. Then turn "Save documents to OneDrive By default" Off. All your files will then be saved locally.

Not sure where to post this but when I open a PDF attachment to an email in Outlook, (Office 2003 on Win XP PRO), and click to save it, unless I change the directory, it offers to save it in ..........Documents and Settings/User1/Local Settings/Tempory Internet Files/OLK9. I press save and exit and then go to explorer and the folder ...............................Temporary Internet Files/OLK9 does not seem to exist.

I have tried saving the file with a name x1y1z1 and searching for it but the system can't find it. I can save it by changing the library to my work in progress file but Ihave no idea what is happening with the above.

Any thoughts wouls be appreciated.

~ As the title indicates, I'm missing two folders that I keep on my desktop.
Yesterday, after logging on, I noticed that they were gone. (I did not delete them and no one else
has access to this computer).

After doing an exhaustive search without any success (I even tried "show hidden folders"), I decided
this morning to do a System Restore in the oft chance that they would somehow reappear.
However, after opening up System Restore I discovered that there aren't any restore points listed
except for one that was created this morning. (Attached)
Although I'm rather perplexed about that, I'm still more concerned about what happened to those missing
folders and more importantly - how to get them back?
I've run out of ideas and I would really appreciate your help. Thank you!

Hi guys,
Had a fair bit of trouble setting up my dns-323 but finally figured out all the IP related issues and have transferred all my data across onto the NAS. I have mapped the drives and can see all my files. I am able to move, and execute everything on the NAS (namely play movies music etc). However when i try to rename a file i get an error message saying
" The Z: Folder does not exist it may have been moved or deleted...do you want to create it? yes/no" if i click yes the same message keeps re-popping up and if i click no i go back to where i started
problem is the folder does exist as i am currently looking at files within it. I have checked all the read/write premissions and tried setting up an access group through the NAS all unsuccessfully which leads my to believe it is a problem on the end of vistas networking.....any ideas please??

A:NAS problems finding folders

Sounds like a bug in the NAS's implementation of SMB. It's probably not a Windows machine, in the sense that it's not running a "real" Windows kernel and SMB server, so it'll be a Samba implementation or some other 3rd-party SMB command processor.

I'd suggest trying to update the NAS firmware.

If I follow this site here:

Will it ONLY remove the empty folders by doing that RD trick? I don't want it remove any files.

Also will it automatically remove them?

Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Finding empty folders on HDD

personally I would not want any utility to automatcially remove empty folders. Some folders are empty for a reason, they may be needed for a temporary working location for some programs or other may have other uses.

to answer your question, it will not remove any folders that have files in them. nor is it totally automatic. read the article, it tells that you will have to manually create the actual file to delete.

A:Finding New Folders like System volume information.

Hi in.kumar and welcome to TSF

The folders that you want to eleminate are not normally seen by the average computer user. One is the trash can and the other is where restore points are saved. Neither should be removed. If your concern is the space that they use on your harddrive, take a different approach to be on the safe side. Simply empty the trash can and reduce the space avaliable for storing system restore points. This can be accomplished by going to the Control Panel and pick System. Then pick the Restore tab and under it pick Available Drives and then pick settings. There, you will be able to reduce the percent of the Harddrives used for system restore. It has a slide bar for setting the percent. The less space you use, the fewer restore Points will be available if you need them. It is your call.

Hope this helps,
Mack1

What I need is a software/tool that capable of:

BTW, is there any software that batch translates/converts these filenames into Latin characters?

Hello!

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

Hi

I've got an annoying problem with my small office network. There are 3 PCs on the local network and we share files. Usually (but not always) if you are in one of the shared folders and you want to create a new folder, once you've right-clicked and created the new folder, you need to navigate away and back again in order to actually see it. This also happens when re-naming the folder.

To be clear this is what happens:

Right click, select 'create new folder'

Nothing appears

Use back and forward buttons

New Folder now visible

Rename folder, but it reverts to being called New Folder

Use back and forward buttons

Folder now appears with the new name.

Two PCs are using XP and one Vista, it happens ot all of them. Only happens with shared folders.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Many thanks

this is a bit of an embarrassing question but please bear in mind that I am a novice at this. I understand about FTP but how do you actually find FTP files in the first place? Is there a search engine in the same way as for normal website pages? Or do you just look for the FTP option when you are downloading files?

Thanks for your help.

Jamie

A:finding FTP files

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. As such, it is a definition for a mechanism to transfer files over a network.

So, there aren't any "FTP Files" since you could theoretically FTP any file.

I believe you're referring to "FTP Sites". Usually, FTP sites are maintained by businesses or individuals who would like to allow people to transfer files to or from them quickly - using FTP. Usually these sites are technical or scholarly in nature - like a computer company having update files on it's FTP site. There will usually be a link on a companies home page. Or a user might have an FTP server with MPEG or MP3 files on it available for download.

As stated, you usually have to be told of the existence of an FTP site or server. You could just "gues" however, this is the hard way.

FTP is "quicker" than using HTTP although file transfer is possible with both.

Modern browsers are capable of changing from HTTP to FTP pretty seamlessly to the user.

Older users (like me ;) or "power users") sometimes prefer the command line FTP which can give a little more control over the intracacies of the protocol. Some programmers have built this into GUI FTP programs such as WS-FTP.

Hope this helps.

Is there any reason when I do a search for files on my PC, as in START/FIND/FILES or FOLDERS that it doesn't find the files that I have saved within Outlook Express?

For instance, I know SOMEWHERE in my OE I have an email with an attached jpg. in it named PhillyJimmy in it.... but when I do a search of my hard drive (C) it will not find the file. Shouldn't find files or folders find that file name if it's exact?

A:Finding files within OE...???

Hey BigDave

Yes, there is. OE is a database program - your emails are not files, they are information stored within the index files (.DBX). The only way to use search to find something there is to specify what text you are looking for in search. And for files, you would enter *.dbx.

However, if you know it is in a folder in OE, you can use the "search" included in OE.
Click Edit->Find Message In This Folder. If it stops at a possible email and it is not the one, pressing F3 will make it continue the search until it has gone through a folder.

I posted about missing files after malware cleanup seperately because i don't want to combine the two. I have a question about how to get rid of files i see in my Secunia psi program but never see them listed in windows uninstaller, Revo uninstaller or even Iobit uninstaller .

Thank you very much, the help is truly appreciated.

A:finding files

Hello -Since you have no record of Malware Cleanup at this forum, could you please tell or link us to that particular item -I think that one minor problem may be related to the IObit programs installed on your system. It is unfortunate that this program / company has a habit of confusing some of your files, and makes them hard to find. The first / best option is to remove IObit from your computer. Next uninstall Secunia PSI Version 3 if that is what you use. Then you can install Secunia PSI Version 2, and not use the latest Version 3, that is a bit more complicated. You may find the earlier version of Secunia is much easier to manage, and easier to handle for many people (me included).Thank You - EDITED to add Secunia 2 Link -

If you click "Start", "Computer", there is a "Search" window in the right corner. You can put the file name (Blue.mp3) or if you don't know the file name, put *.mp3

I have been having problems with my laptop lately to say the least. I realized that it came pre-installed with Vista 32-bit but that I had a 64-bit processor so I added in an extra gig of RAM and did a clean install of Vista 64. Other than many, many devices not working at first (including the ethernet controller) due to driver issues, it was working fine. I had previously backed up my files in Vista 32 and tried to restore them after the installation, but the only way to do this was to use the "restore from another machine" option because Vista thought my backups were from another system due to the restore. After getting everything to restore correctly, I noticed that I had lost many administrator privileges that I had before.

After a few days, I got a blue screen of death and when the system restarted itself it said that a hard drive failue was imminent and I should backup and replace the drive. Unfortunately, it would not allow me to backup so I had to replace the drive and restore again with the same backup that was from "another system". I am having the same problem with rights to files and folders. Today, for example, I was using TuneUp Utilities' defragment utility and there were large parts of the drive that were "locked" and were not able to be moved. I assume this is because I had no rights to them after the restore.

I don't have 2k but I would think if you do a full drive Search for either *.zip or *.cab it might turn up something in the way of compressed files.

I certainly wouldn't recommend deleting them until you know more about them unless they happen to be in one of the Temp folders. Even then it's good policy to send them to the Recycle in for a reasonable period before dumping them.

For a comparison, I'm running XO Home and I currently have 185 .zip files and 85 .cab files. Given that yours are only 14 Megs, I would just leave them alone if I were you.

I have tried to start bitdefender scan but it wont start, last scan was early hours of this morning and no issues were found.

Any ideas

I recently got an SSD and followed this guide to set it up properly
How to: Setup SSD boot drive with secondary Hard disc optimization

My problem is that once I finished it and everything was quick, I was too stupid to not back up at all and I cut/paste the contents of the user folder's video, music and pictures into the windows libraries. Now I cannot log back into the account, and with my other accounts, I cannot find any of the files. Any one knows where they went or if they still exist?

A:Need help finding location of files

You cannot move anything into libraries - only into folders. Libraries are only an index of folders. But if you move something to a library, it ends up in the default folder of that library. Look into the libraries Properties and see what the default folders are.

I am getting assistance from Malwarebytes helpdesk for an apparent hijacking trojan that I have. I installed ComboFix aper the techs instructions. He has now asked me to look for a combofix text file at c:\combofix.txt. I probably could find it when I was using Windows XP, but for the life of me I can't find it using the Vista operating system. Where do I look? I need a tutorial on finding all my C:\ files. This should be easy but Vista seems to be hiding them on me.HELP!

A:Tutorial Finding My Files

hi,,, click on vista start menu orb>click computer>click on C: drive>click on program files>click on combo fix program file and look for the file they said,,,,,
also with vista if you index the C: drive then just type "combofix.txt" into the search box in start menu and it will come up instantly
good luck.

I just finished installing windows 10 on top of windows 8.1. As the new system loaded, I was encouraged by the banner that read "Your files are just where you left them." However, when I open OneDrive, I get the message that there are no files to show. I can access Word, Excel files, etc. by opening those applications, so the files are in a sense where I left them, but if I need to find something in OneDrive, I have nothing to search or browse.

I know that this is a very low-grade question, but I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance,

SeaGeeBee

A:Finding OneDrive Files

If you can open the files in Office applications, then they exist somewhere. If you open OneDrive and don't see anything, then they must not be stored there.

Are they in your Documents folder?

I have been trying to monitor my 13 year olds computer and he is wayyyy more techy than I am. I think he was on to me because today when I went in I clicked on folder, tools, options (maybe not in that order) but when I went to click on (I think ) options ;....there was a little icon on the left and when I clicked on it it would not open? What could he have done to it ? And how can I unlock it? I would be so grateful for any help?

Also, his MSN instant messenger has disappeared? it shows he has one unread message but his inbox is empty....where could it have gone ...is it hidden too? How do I find it/

I'm an adult but am not a fan of helping people spy on other people, regardless of their relationship. I strongly suggest you ask your son if he is hiding something and to give you access to the files

Hi jessr06

Try going to Start/ControlPanel/FolderOptions/View and changing the button to SHOW Hidden Files and Folders. Just don't forget to change it back when you are finished. Let us know how you go.

I restored my laptop recently but before I restored it I had my old backup of my iPhone data on iTunes, but after restoring my PC, that old backup on iTunes is no longer popping up. So does this back that, that old back up is gone forever? Or is there a way to get it back?

Hey napy!

Did you not copy all the important files from the notebook to a external drive before the restoration of the OS?

If not, the data could be gone. A Restore of the OS usually requires a Format of the drive which will erase All data
on that drive prior to the re-install.

Open Computer and under the C:// drive, look for a folder named "Windows.old".
If your lucky, you should have that folder on the root of the C:// drive with all your
old data.Open it and see if the missing data has been saved. This will be a big folder size. (GBs)
Flashorn.

I recently needed to find some files (MS Word which contained a specific word). From Windows Explorer, I selected the root of the directory in which I thought the files resided, entered the word I wanted to find in the Search box, and 16 files were found.

I then repeated the search using a stand-alone search tool and it found several hundred files.

I looked at the search options and they ARE configured to search the directory in question and MS Word documents. (Since some files were found, it seems reasonable to assume that the search options are configured properly.) It also reported that my system was fully indexed.

Why does Windows Search fail to find files being sought?

A:Search not finding files

Did you select both .doc and .docx files in your search?

*I'm not computer saavvy so please forgive me if I have a hard time describing my problem*

Hey everyone, recently my computer crashed (HP with Windows XP) and I had to reboot my computer, luckily my computer retained most of my files (everything in My Documents, and the HP PAVILLION (C:) etc etc). However, I had a substantial amount of files (mostly media, music) stored in a file on my desktop and as I had worried/expected the file was gone and all of its contents. Now heres where it gets tricky.

My hard drive right now is missing about ~60 gigs which roughly corresponds to the missing data! It says I have about 18 gigs of space left when I should have closer to 80.

I tried running a search for the missing files but the Windows search only goes through the standard folders like My documents etc. It's as if the files are there but there is no file path and they are just floating around in my hard drive somewhere inaccessible.

Is there anyway I can get these files back (without paying $70 for some lame file recovery program) or at the very least get my HD space bacK?

Any help appreciated. Thank you

You could try Recuva.

Sometimes a file gets downloaded from the internet (willingly or not) but then I cannot find it. Is there a way to search to find the most recently created new files?

A:Finding downloaded files

Aren`t they going to your downloads folder, set it up so all your downloads will go there, it`s the default location in Windows 7, unless you`ve changed it.

In Chrome it`s in Settings/Advanced Settings/Downloads

Set it to download files to the downloads folder. You can always move them someplace else later.

Internet Explorer - Change Default Download Location

Strangely your editor does not allow me to enter a title Using Firefox.

Hello again,

No matter which undelete programme I try, not one of them will ever find a deleted file.

I copy a file to a directory on C: or D:, delete it and then empty the Recycle Bin. Whatever application I care to use, the file, which is very unlikely to have been overwritten, can not be found. No trace of it ever.

The undelete applications are on drive Z: so that running the undeleter should have no effect on drive C: or D: where the deletion has been done.

Is there something wrong with my discs, or is it the security app ? It worked in XP !

Regards

Cheemag

Install the recovery software on the C: drive, the drive that has the OS on it.

Is your hard drive encrypted?
