Portable hard drive issues

Q: Portable hard drive issues

Hi All.

I have a 2.5inch HDD inside an external case which is my primary means of carrying my data around.

Everything works hunky dory at home, however when I take it to university, there appears to be a policy which disables write access to the drive as it comes up as a Hard-Drive, whereas other nand based devices come up as removable drives.

Firstly, is it likely that windows (vista) is applying a policy to all hard drives attached to prevent write access (to most folders). Secondly, if so, how do I change the disk so it identifies as a removable drive as opposed to local hard drive.

(In Disk management, the external hdd comes up as a basic disc, whereas my flash drive is listed as removable)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

A:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

IOMEGA:

or this LACIE:

I don't know which one to choose since my seagate agent go is broken...

Sorry I can't help as I haven't used either, my external drive is a Seagate Expansion so not what you would call a portable one as it's used on a desktop computer, don't have a laptop.

I suppose it comes down to what you can afford and which one would give you all the features you need, have you read any reviews about them and if so which comes out the better buy ?

Just got myself a new portable hard drive made by Zynet.
Every time I try to Initialize it, a box pops up saying The device is not ready?
I have tried changing the USb sockets it is plugged into, to no avail?
The HD is on, the pc recognises it, as it is showing up in the disk management screen.

But the strange thing is my laptop also running Windows 7 recognised straight away?

I have a portable hard drive (I/O Magic)
80 gigs

I love it, it's small.
And I can take it around with me.
I use it very often.

However, I was using it on my laptop today and I accidentally let it drop onto the carpet. The fall was only about 1 1/2 feet tops but it obviously did something negative. So, my problem is that it doesn't load up anymore when I hook the USB into my laptop or desktop. I think a wire got loose inside and that's why the drive isn't spinning. i don't know, I need help! The light still works on the portable harddrive but that's about it. I have a lot of data on this drive that I can't afford to lose!

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

I then opened ESAEUS partition manager to have a look what the problem is and this is all i see

Ive noticed that all my other hard dives are Primary and this is logical.
What do i do to get this working please? I've tried to scan disk for errors and get this message

Hi Bessy1, and welcome to TSG.

There is no guarantee that I will have a solution for you, but it might help someone else here to help you if you let us know the following:

1) Brand and model number of the DVD player

2) URL of the web site where you are purchasing the downloads. Have you been using the same site for the movies that do play and the new ones that do not play?

3) The file format (file name extension) of the old files that do play and new files that will not play

A:Portable Hard Drive not working

Sounds like the drive has failed. Try it in another machine.
Use the originals that you backed up to make a new backup as soon as possible in case your main hard drive fails (and it will, eventually, and often when you need it the most).

Portable drives are good for backups, because you still have the originals elsewhere, but they are very delicate and fail with just a mild bump, so are not reliable as storage media of first choice.

A:Iomega Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive

It's not backup if there's only one copy, regardless.

The first thing to determine is whether it is the enclosure that has gone bad or the disk inside. Disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk and connect it internally to another desktop computer. See if it comes up on it.

You may have to go to the disk manufacturer's web site for proper jumper settings.

A:Disappearing portable hard drive

Typically...when a drive disappears...it has a problem.

Since it's an external drive, it could the enclosure the drive is in...it could be the actual hard drive itself.

My suggestion would be to remove the drive from enclosure...connect it directly to a working system...and see if the system picks it up properly.

If it does, then I would suggest moving all files from the drive immediately...and then running the appropriate hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic (long test, not short) on it.

If My Computer does not reflect the drive, but Disk Management reflects as either an empty volume, a RAW volume, or an unknown file system...then your best effort will be to try data recovery software.

I have a portable Hard Drive designed for a 2.0 port. I used it on a computer with a 1.0 port. I was moving a pretty sizable amount of data and it took awhile, especially since a 2.0 device works slowly in a 1.0 port. The problem is that now, the computer no longer reads the drive, though it recognizes something's been plugged in. The drive itself makes a strange clicking sound whenever I try to use it. Is there any way to fix it? What's wrong with it? And does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to either fix this one or get a new drive if need be?

Hello,
I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. Recently bought a new portable with Windows 7 Pro. I have several portable hard drives that I use, two of them are almost constantly usb'd to the computer, and there are two others I use occasionally. At first the "constant" drives were called "F" and "G" drives by the computer. This was great. Even if I unhooked them and plugged them back in they remained the same. Several days ago I had to remove them and on plugging them back in to the computer they are now "H" and "I" drives. I've tried to find out where to change the directory, I think that's what the "F" and "G" are called, but can't figure it out. I would really like them to keep the same name as it's easier for me and my auto backups get goofed up when they are changed.
Thanks for suggestions.

Hello Wildflowers, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While you have the drives connected, check in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc)to see if you may be able to change the drive letters for them. The tutorial below is for Vista, but the procedure is the same in Windows 7.

hi
Right click on my computer
Choose MANAGE
Then find DISK MANAGEMENT
You should see your ext hard drive under the list.
Right click on it, and choose CHANGE DRIVE LETTER
Choose anything, but I recommand something higher than M:

I've seen this problem with alot of STORAGE DEVICE
It happen more often with Laptop because they usually have Card reader.
So it makes couple drives like e:, f:, g:.
Storage device tries to install themself with the drive letter next to CDROM
c: - HD1
d: - HD2 or CDROM
e: - Mass storage device (maybe for card readers)
So your external HD tries to have the E: drive (probably a bug)

This is a little embarassing but I recently learned that computers have an average life-span of about 5 years. I'm not sure how to check the age of my computer but according to a diagnostic program I have, the System BIOS Date is 02/09/2002 and the OS Installation Date is 12/01/2005 (I'm not sure which represents the age itself).

Over the years my family and I have accumulated about 7.13GB of documents, pictures, and music, which we would like to save to a back-up in case we ever need to replace the computer. Currently what I have are a few old floppy disks from almost ten years ago; these disks will obviously not be able to hold so much information, and there is a chance that most of these disks no longer work anyway.

I've been looking for information about ways to back-up our documents and from most reviews I've read, portable flash-sticks aren't always reliable as they can become corrupted unpredictably, or their moveable parts can break. The best option I am aware of is to purchase a portable external hard drive, but I don't have a clue which one is best to purchase and will have the longest life-span.

Assuming I'm correct about external hard drives operating something like floppy disks, we would probably plug it in once in awhile just to back-up files (maybe once a month) and occasionally use it to view older documents. When not in use the external hard drive would be turned off and unplugged from the computer and stored in a safe pl... Read more

I used Acronis True Image to clone the C: drive on my office desktop to a portable USB hard drive. Then I took it home and plugged it into my laptop. The laptop recognized the hard drive immediately and seemed to be able to popen all of my folders, EXCEPT my main Documents Folder appeared as empty. I took the drive back to my office and the Documents Folder is definitely NOT empty.

I think this has to do with "sharing" the folder, but all the advice I get refers to networks rather than just taking a physical hard drive from one computer to another.

What do I do to make the Documents Folder available and editable on both computers?

FYI, I used to have just a few key folders backed up on this portable hard drive (using synctoy) and I could access them perfectly from both computers. I did the full drive clone as an extra bit of safety.

thanks

When I plug in the hard drive my computer doesn't see it and I can't do a backup . I tried a flashdrive in the usb port and it works okay . I even shut down my computer and unplugged it for 15 minutes then started it back up but it still doesn't see the WD hard drive .
Do these portable drives just go bad like that ? Or is there something else I can check ?

Hello, I have a CIRAGO USB 2.0 High Speed 320GB Portable hard drive. It has been really unstable, slow, and erroneous lately. At first I thought it was my PC itself, so I went inside and cleaned out all the dust and made sure everything was in the right spot and functioning. Then I turned the PC back on, and plugged my Portable HD in, but it recognizes as Local Disk(G: ) -as opposed to what it always recognized it as, which was CIRAGO(G: ). And If i select it it tells me

The Disk in Drive G is not formatted. Would you like to format now?
(yes/no)

And when i press yes, it says

The disk in drive G cannot be formatted.

So I have no clue whats going on at this point, so I try Chkdsk /f, it's worked in the past for hard drive acting up. When I run Chkdsk /f G:, I get this error

Cannot open volume for direct assess.

So now im completely confused. It went from working fine to being slow and erroneous, now it just doesnt work at all.

Hello (and thank you for any help..)

I got a virus/malware on my laptop and moved some files over to a portable hard drive prior to reinstalling the OS. I was not aware that doing so would infect the hard drive, but it did. (Yes, dumb on my part.. I know.)

Prior to knowing it was infected I hooked it up to my desktop pc and also infected that.

Long story short, I reloaded the OS on my laptop and installed a bunch of spyware/malware programs and then hooked up the portable drive to it to have them run and clean the drive.

Is this the best way to go about cleaning/removing malware/virus from a portable hard drive? My concern is that (even though I have basically run all these programs multiple times) the portable hard drive may still contain something and when I go to use it again it will re infect a clean pc.

Any help on this would be appreciated. (Maybe there is really no way of telling 100% if the drive i absolutely clean.. ) I am mainly concerned about transmitting malware/virus that can infect my pc and allow others to see my passwords or bank info etc.

Is this hard drive never to be trusted again or??

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Hi,

I am travelling at the moment and saved my holiday pics on the 1TB Samsung 3.5inch portable hard drive. Since last night I can't view the files I saved. It's like I never saved them. It had 500gb free and now it has 900gb so lot of my data is missing?

I unchecked hidden files and system hidden files. I have tried on other windows machines. Also ran recuva software. I am at a loss. I am going to try run it on a mac when I get the chance and run a virus scan when I get back home.

The drive runs fine, ie no noise etc. I always try to remove it safely. Also I accessed the saved files 2 days ago!

pls help

External hard drive was accidentally dropped and unsafely unplugged by accident. Computer now states the device is working properly but it is not listed under device manager or in "my computer". I run Windows xp pro on a desk top dell.

I've bought myself a portable USB hard drive.
Now, using some cute programs I think I can
1) set it up to select a partition to bootup on bootup
2) use the ultimate boot cd to access it and copy/clone a windowsxp hard drive to a partition on the usb drive (bit iffy with this, what do people think?) and be able to copy the clone to a new pc.
3) Install windows xp on a partition with anti virus and spyware killers to run it across badly infected pc's that can't be booted up without windows crashing.
4) install ghost.exe on it and save a hard drive image.
5) Keep the software in yet another partition that the drive came with as it really is pretty damn smart stuff (its a western digital 80gb)
6) install a usb version of netboot disk.

Am I dreaming?
Have I run out of partitions I can set as active?
If I can do all of these things I'll have a pretty useful little device for doing IT support so I'm keen to try.
I'm after ideas on what are the obvious issues.
I know that the HP usb boot software will solve the initial issue of making the drive bootable.(I think)
Input please!
