windows VM on Linux Host - large usage of /tmp/vmware

Q: windows VM on Linux Host - large usage of /tmp/vmware

Hi there
Workstation Version 10.2 Host running these distros - same observations for both hosts. Opensuse / Linux Mint 17 both 64 bit. Guest is windows 8.1 update 1.

I seem on the df -h command get a /tmp file around 4GB which is 95% allocated. This goes down to 0% when the vm is powered off.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

Cheers

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have recently installed Redhat Enterprise V.3 as guest on Windows XP host using vmware.

After adding the necessary lines in the 2 ifcfg-eth0 files, the device eth0 is finding the IP correctly at boot time (or by usinf ifup eth0) and I can use folder sharing between the host and the gust. However I still can't connet to the Interent from the guest.

My windows host internet conection is working fine.
I had it working for a short peiod of time on the guest. (I was using VM - settings - customized - eth bridged-default)

Has anyone seen this before?

thanks,

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.

I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

Hi there

I usually run a LINUX HOST for testing Windows VM's - but I need to test some new releases of various Linux distros so I've created some VM's --easy enough and running them on a Windows Host.

However I can't attach a USB drive with a Linux file system (XFS) to the VM as the Windows HOST rejects the HDD wanting me to format it !!. There's 2.7 TB of media files on it - I want to test running media server in a VM.

Anybody know how to bypass the Windows nag prompt about the HDD and be able to attach it direct to the VM.

(The other way round is no problem -- never a problem loading NTFS HDD's on to Linux machines -- however the NTFS file system is SLOW compared with XFS -- on USB3 device on Native windows transfer rate of 1 TB of files from fast NTFS HDD to NTFS USB3 device is max 82 Mib/s - average for whole transfer. On same machine with Native Linux and XFS to XFS (using same HDD's and USB 3 port avg speed is 350 mib/s !! -- HUGE difference !!!).

Note I have to have a Windows Host for this --I know I could run Linux VM's from a Linux Host but in this case I do have to use a Windows Host as that will be the destination system at the end of testing.

BTW I'm running VMWARE workstation 12.1 on W10 Pro Host.

Hi All,

On a rock solid machine (to date) I got a BSOD. During this time I was using Unity (VMWare Pro), and the host crashed (not the client VM).

I did try the tool at http://www.osronline.com/, which seems to claim that the culprit was steam.exe, but I'm not sure that makes sense.

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Hardware:
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Settings:
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

Thanks,

Hi there

Windows 10 build 9879 with the latest updates running as a VM on Windows 8.1 host using VMware workstation 11 or vmplayer 7 won't attach USB devices - only USB devices connected at power on seem to be recognised.

I upgraded a W8.1 system to W10 but I'll try later with a brand new install --- I don't expect any change though.

I've also tried both WITH and WITHOUT the 3D / hardware acceleration checkbox enabled --no difference.

Windows 8.1 runs fine as a VM on W7 host if you are coming from W7. Same problem though if you run W10 from a W7 host.

A:Windows 10 on Windows 8.1 Host and Vmware - USB problem

Don't you think a VMware forum would be more appropriate? It is a problem with their software.

A hypervisor normally tries to grab your device when it is introduced (from Windows host in your case, OSX in mine) and then offer it to the guest (10 in both cases). USB2 works for me but not USB3. In my case I use virtualbox and it doesn't support USB3. I know this because I asked the developers. This is a problem with the VM software (one end or the other) not Windows. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 installed on real hardware all recognise USB 2 and 3. And USB 1 works on Windows XP for all I know if such devices still exist.

Hardware acceleration has nothing to do with connecting USB devices BTW. It is for graphics and normally (ime) makes things worse.

I'm wondering whether it's possible to host a game server (e.g. Counter Strike Source, or The Hidden) with a GNU/Linux operating system (probably Ubuntu) and have Windows-based clients connect to the server to play online.
I tried researching the issue but it seems this is not a popular question. Search results seem to indicate that it's perfectly doable, but reliable confirmation would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi:

I recently installed Zorin and YLMF on my Vmware player(two separate installs). The problem I am having is that I am unable to install Vmware Tools on either the YLMF nor the Zorin. Before you ask I installed both to see which one I like best and I'm still undecided mostly because I can't get either one configured correctly.

I have searched the net and found various videos...the problem is that the video is mainly about how to use the software once you install it.

I've also found written instructions about unzipping the install.pl file(can't remember the actual name) file to the desktop and double clicking the file to install it and I've done that with no success at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Goal: To have host machine (win7) to use wired interface (lan1) (10.89.228.171) as default, while vm (winxp) uses wireless interface (wireless1) (192.168.1.2) as default. Each interface is a seperate network and seperate isp.

Using Vmware player 3.1.3

I have set the VM to bridged mode, and bridged that virtual adapter to the wireless interface with vmnetcfg. VM is now able to get out on the internet, ipchicken shows its going out on the wireless isp.

On the host machine, I am also going out on the wireless interface.
I changed metric on wired (lan1) to 1 for gateway AND interface
changed metric on wireless (wireless1) to 100 for interface (no gateway option)

Now, the host machine goes out on the lan1 gateway, great!
Also changed adapter priority, set lan1 above wireless1

Now, when going back to the VM, it is not able to get out on the internet.

If I remove metric for gateway on lan1, I will default back to wireless on the host, Even with the
priority showing lan1 before wireless1..

I guess what im asking windows to do is route all traffic from host through lan1, and route all traffic from vm through wireless1, concurrently.

Help !

Hi there

not a big problem but if my HOST has a wifi connection to the internet then a VM (or at least Networking) )doesn't work when enabling BRIDGED networking (NAT works OK but I need Bridged !!))

If I connect the host to my internet via Ethernet or to a "Wifi-->Ethernet bridge" then bridged networking is fine.

I usually use the wifi-ethernet bridge anyway as it's humungously more stable than the basic wifi cards (and the bridge connects to my Internet at fast 5GHZ wifi - avoiding contention problems on 2.4GHZ network).

Not that familiar with VMWare, but from Chapter 5 in the User Guide, if you install the VMWare tools:

Lets you drag and drop files between host operating systems and Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and FreeBSD guest operating systems

Chapter 8, titled Transferring Files and Text
Between the Host and Guest might also be useful.

You can transfer files directly over the network if you are not using NAT for the network connection type.

Hello all,

I have been looking for several days and I have yet to find any machines for sale that offer dual NIC support. I have tried looking at the typical sites, including Google but to no avail. So, I figured I would look for help here.

Ideally I need a box that uses the atom processor (low power), dual network cards, and has a relatively large hard drive (500+ GB).

Anyone have any suggestions?

I looked here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859110001 and found an almost perfect match. The only problem is that it does not have dual lan which is a requirement for me. I could go and purchase a USB network adapter like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812146017 but I don't see that as an ideal solution compared to dual onboard network ports.

So, reaching out to see if anyone knows of a box like this that has dual NICs for a reasonable price (under $500 US).

Thanks!!!

A:Looking for Linux Intel Atom Server w/2 NICs & large HDD

I'm not sure I know of any Atom based units that have dual-NICs. A machine you might want to consider is something like the Acer Revo 3610 (I'm thinking of getting one of these - since you're in the US it'll probably be half the price over there). The unit comes with an dual core Atom 330 (I believe this shows up as 4 CPUs because it has hyper-threading on each core, or so I've been told), 4GB or RAM, and a 500GB HDD. You could then purchase a USB-to-RJ45 adapter.

Please let me know which unit you buy, as I'm very interested in doing the same (I want a low power consumption Ubuntu server).

please bear with my ignorance. I have to run a Windows 7 virtual machine under KVM on a Linux Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit host to run MS Office 2013.

Hi there

after no problem with all the various updates on Windows 1607 I've really got a strange one now

Laptop (HP envy) has lost Wifi and Internet connectivity on the Windows HOST - but a Linux VM I'm running on the same laptop has absolutely NO problem connecting to both 2.4 and 5 GHZ wifi networks.

The Wifi card in the computer is a bog standard Intel Dual Band Wifi adapter AC7265 -- been running fautlessly ever since the start of the W10 program.

Not sure why this adapter should suddenly stop working - I've checked the VM and it hasn't "hogged" the device by disconnecting it from the host.

Reverting back to BEFORE latest updates were applied -- all working again.

(No changes of any kind were made to the Linux VM so it's not the VM that's at fault here).

Can't understand why this update should hose up a perfectly decent reliable piece of working hardware !!!!!!.

I am running Windows XP (SP3) as a virtual machine in VMWare Player 2.5.2. Normally in the "Safely Remove" tray icon I had four components by default, in addition to whatever USB devices I had connected to the virtual machine.

Recently, I chose to "safely remove" a USB device, but my mouse slipped, and instead I "safely removed" the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and/or the "Inter(R) 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller" (both are missing now, but I think I have written their names correctly).

The components that remain are "VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter" and "Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)"

Now the virtual OS has no USB capability. I have looked everywhere I can, including Device Manager, and see no sign of the missing Controllers. It seems odd that a virtual component like that could suddenly disappear -- but since it's not a physically-removable drive, I can't just plug it back in.

I have tried doing a Windows Restore to a previous date (before my mistake), but that did not restore the USB Controllers.

How can I restore the USB capability?

1) My CPU usage is constantly 100%, then when I go into task manager it is at 100% but quickly jumps down to 2% - 6%, made me think virus
2) My c:\WinNT\system32 folder is 10gb

hey, my parents recently bought a new computer and its pretty decent. its an Acer so i do realise the modem is BRUTAL. ANYWAYS they are comming from a 1.6GHz processor and like an Nvidia 5500 and 512Mb SDRAM... and the new computer has Dual Core amd 4200+ processors, nvidia 6100 and 1024G DDR ram. So i mean, this should be a big upgrade... Odlly enough it doesnt seem to be much better... I still get the same losuy fram rate in games like World of Warcraft and same poor speeds all around. Im wondering if i can get some instructions on how to REALLY reduce CPU and RAM usage using Vista. ALSO another strange thing is that when i check in bios the computer reads 1024 Mb of RAM, however when i look in system in windows it says 768... i took it to the store and they said its an ACER or Vista error and that if i want i can check back in a week. figured id ask on here first, considering they probably wont tell me anything..

thanks.

Hi there

running latest build as a VM on a Linux Host (VMware workstation v 12.01) the taskbar can't be accessed in FULL SCREEN mode if the taskbar is selected to be at the BOTTOM of the screen.

It works fine if you have the taskbar positioned at the sides or the Top !!!! Go figure !

Not a mega show stopper but I still prefer the taskbar to be at the bottom.

Running the same W10 (latest build) as a VM on a WINDOWS host (W7 or another W10 system) taskbar works even at the bottom.

this is probably a VMware / Linux video driver problem so I don't see a fix to this any time soon.

BTW the same problem also happens with a W7 VM on a Linux host using VMware workstation build 12.0.1

note in Windowed mode taskbar works correctly wherever on the screen it is selected.

Cheers
jimbo

I have noticed unusually large CPU usage on my Gateway netbook even though I only have 1 or 2 programs running. Task manager has shown my usage the past two days as almost always at 100%. When I went online looking for help, the links I would click on Yahoo search would re-direct me every time. I finally got the hint and started Firefox in safe mode, which has helped, but it still tries.
I was using AVG, but since it obviously did not fix anything, I used Malwarebyte's program and that helped improve some, but something is obviously still going on. I was in the middle of a Trend Micro scan when I found your website again and decided following your steps might help end this insanity, LOL! PLEASE HELP!!

A:Unusually large CPU usage and link re-direct

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I?ve given you the ?All clear.? Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean! Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed. Download TDSSKiller.zip and extract TDSSKiller.exe to your desktopExecute TDSSKiller.exe by doubleclicking on it.Press Start Scan
If Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected. Important - If there is no option to "Cure" it is critical that you select "Skip"Then click Continue > Reboot now
Once complete, a log will be produced in c:\. It will be named for example, TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_24.07.2010_13.10.52_log.txtPost that log, please. Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:Link 1 Link 2 VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop * IMPORTANT - ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled. This is because AVG falsely detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first. You may do this throug... Read more

Hey,

When i'm managing large files (1-10 GB) using explorer in Win7 Ultimate 64 bit: renaming, moving (not copying) etc. it happens that it takes forever (read: doesn't work) and my computer gets messed up.

Ram slowly, steadily climbs to max ram (4GB - normal operational level is around 2GB) and stays there having some dips now and then, to rise to the roof again a bit later. Process Explorer doesn't show any process eating all this ram. Sometimes it suddenly gets fixed but sometimes it requires a reboot to fix.

The files/directories i have this with, are the same ones. Most folders/files move/rename just fine, others always trigger this issue.

(oh, btw, it's not a program having a lock on the files, this wouldn't explain the ram problem anyway)

When i copied everything over to a new harddisk, the same problem persisted with the same files on the new disk.

Solution: copy and delete works, but since the files are huge and plenty, this is not acceptable.

When I add new large files, about 1 in 4-5 have this problem and must be copy+deleted to remove the problem for that file.

anyone has an idea, plz?

greetings

A:RAM usage maxed out when manipulating large files

Try adjusting your virtual memory. If you adjust that it should take some stress of the physical memory.

Hello, I've recently encountered a problem. It seems as if my computer is using way too much RAM for some reason. I currently have 6GB of RAM installed. As soon as I start my computer up, I'm greeted with this warning:
So I decided to open up task manager and see exactly how much RAM I'm really using:
No process is using up any amount of RAM to come close the above number. The most RAM using is 70mb or so from Google Chrome while typing this post. Clicking on the performance tab of task manager gives me this information:

I don't know what exactly is causing this problem, I haven't downloaded anything recently. I had this exact problem a few weeks ago and a system restore fixed it but I'm not wanting to wait on the computer to restore again or for this problem to just come back again. Any help would be appreciated, if you need any more information, let me know. I'm running Windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332.

A:85% RAM usage on idle, large cached memory.

The real problem is the very high commit charge and that generally indicates a memory leak. Post a screenshot of Resource Monitor memory tab sorted by "Commit". Hopefully that will show where the problem lies.

So i consider my self to be a very safe user and i have a lot of security programs that i use to keep it that way (malware bytes, spybot, combofix, sdfix, i also run noscript addon in my firefox) but lately i have run into a problem that it seems none of them can really fix permanently. It seems about every 4-5 days i keep getting infected by the ave.exe virus and getting brower redirects when i click on links and i am also getting this same pop up that comes up on every single site i go to advertising some game or what ever.So i took the steps that i normally take running MalwareBytes to rid of anything that it could find, also running sdfix and combofix as needed and using spybot to block and immunize against anything it could see, this would take care of the ave.exe until it returns again in a few days, but its not fixing my brower redirect and pop up problem. I have also noticed that one of my svchost is running at a much higher memory usage (currently 121,353 k as i type this) that i am sure has something to do with all this.As for the browser redirects i have cleaned my hosts file but yet i still get redirects when clicking links. So currently ave.exe is not affecting my computer but i expect it to strike again soon, i am still getting browser redirects and a popup as well as one of my svchost using a ton of memory.Edit: I used malwarebytes full scan and combofix to make sure computer was as clean as i could, posted new logs. (i ran combofix, then malwarebytes, then got... Read more
