Dell Inspiron 15 N5040 Adjusting screen brightness?

Q: Dell Inspiron 15 N5040 Adjusting screen brightness?

Hello guys, I am not seeing the 'screen brightness' adjustment on this pc though? Normally it would be at the bottom of the Power Plan window. Pressing the FN key and using the up and down arrows or f4 or f5 keys doesn't do it either, help?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hardware failure

Replace Hard Drive

Your hard drive is operating outside of normal parameters and should be replaced. Consider reviewing the No BOOT section in this Dell Knowledge Base article to identify the most common solutions for your Hard Drive. Tip! Refer Owner's Manual for instructions to remove and replace your Dell Hardware"
I understand that the hard drive needs to be replaced. The question is how long do we wait? Is total failure imminent? The boss is skeptical. Thanks!

A:Dell Inspiron N5040

All hard drives fail if the computer lasts long enough.

Laptop hard drives tend to fail sooner than desktop hard drives.

If your boss has important data in that laptop, he shouldn't procrastinate getting it backed up.

There's no set rule on how long it takes for a hard drive to fail.

Hi guys, been landed with my uncles Dell and am trying to fix it, read this post with no solution but it's closed,

Maybe someone can give me a hand to fix this problem, I'm IT savvy but havent used windows in many years so no idea where to start.

The problem happend a few weeks ago then disappeared for a week when he handed me the compter, I thought he was making it up but a week later he drops it back out.

On Startup if I select starts windows normally i get a nice blue with error codes:

Stop : 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003,0xFFFFFA8007277B30,…………)

Disconnected CMOS battery as I read somewhere this will cause a reset, removed ram, no luck,

I can get into System Recovery Options.

I went into advanced options and tried a system restore now its boots and works??, by the looks this is going to happen again, can someone tell me what went wrong and how I can stop this happening in future?

I started having this same issue with my Inspiron N5040 just a few weeks ago, of course just past their yr warranty. I ran Windows Diagnostics, CCleaner, a virus check, etc etc. Computer would go for a day or so fine, then would start shutting down every 20 seconds. Reboot would either say Windows 7 and give me a choice for a diagnostic tool, then shut down before I could use it. Or it would give me the choices of normal Windows startup or safe mode, etc.

I took the laptop to Best Buy after running my own tests at home. They left it on for a week with no problem, cleaned the fans out, checked the battery, ran a full diagnostic on both hardware and software. They got the same results I did....no problems.

I am now running the laptop without the battery for 2 days with no shut downs. This morning, I put the battery back in to see if it shuts down. Thinking it's the battery, even though Best Buy's tests shows it was OK.

Laptop is not warm anywhere to my touch and Best Buy did not find it overheating. I keep it on my bed and my cats lay on the bed. Wondering if it's clogged with cat hair and dust, and if so, would that cause this issue? After reading others' posts here, I am wondering if this is a fault in this laptop. And if so, why can't any tech find that problem and fix it?

A:Re: Dell Inspiron N5040 Keeps Crashing Please Help!

I keep it on my bed

if on the cover , then that would block the fans and overheat and switch off

you will see the airflow is usually from below - drawn in from the bottom and blown out the sides ............... not always - but the majority

have a feel and you should work out the airflow

So I have a Dell Inspiron N5040 that I purchased brand new, around a year ago. It worked fine until about 3 months ago. I will randomly be online checking my email or scrolling through music on Itunes and it just crashes. When I'm online (using chrome) The help center pops up, and in the search box a bunch of numbers and symbols type all on its own and I can't control it and then it just turns off. Sames happens with Itunes, the help box will pop up, then it will freak out go crazy, type a few letters numbers and symbols then turn off. It is happening more and more frequently now and I can't stand it. I've tried restoring, I've tried Re installing Windows 7, I do not know what it is. If you can help me out, it will be very appreciated.

So I have a Dell Inspiron N5040 that I purchased brand new, around a year ago.
Any chance the laptop is still under manufacturer warranty?

Has the fan and vents been cleaned lately? How are the temps?

If still happening after re-installing the OS and updating drivers then you most likely are looking at a hardware failure.

A:Dell Inspiron N5040 boot issue

Go into the BIOS setup - is the hard drive detected?  F2 at powerup..  If not, the drive has likely failed.  If it is detected, restart, press F12 and run an extended diagnostic on the drive.

I got handed this laptop today - it belongs to the daughter of one of my bridge partners - and I cannot get it to boot into anything other than Safe Mode.
It appears to have something of a checkered history. It was built by Dell with Win 7 HP installed, at least there is a Dell COA sticker on the bottom of it, but it is now running Win 8.0 Pro. She says it was taken to a repair shop in the town, about whom I know nothing, and they said 'We've put 8 on it'.
I managed to get to Control panel/Recovery and do a restore to the 12th October and I was then able to get it to connect to my router. I installed Malwarebytes, it updated and ran a scan which showed 1012 entries for PuPs and 2 instances of Rogue.Multiple. All appeared to be properly quarantined and a second scan, after a re-boot, came up clean, but it still will not boot into anything other than Safe Mode.
I am beginning to suspect that either the Win 8 install was botched or it is a pirate copy. On Control panel/system, the product id comes up as 'Not available', and there is no 'Windows update' section on the control panel.
If it is a legitimate copy, how do I get it to boot normally ?  There is no recovery partition.
If it is not a legitimate copy, since it has a Win 7 COA, what is the easiest way to revert it to Win 7 ?  Data isn't a problem, there is very little on this system and I can recover what there is.
Chris Cosgrove

A:Dell Inspiron N5040 - Safe mode only

I'm almost 100% sure the Win8 on the machine is illegal.  Since there's no recovery partition but there's a COA I'd say to download the correct version of Win7 from here and do a clean install.

It seems a high pitched noise in a Dell is fairly common. I have read the forum and tried some of the suggestions but none of them worked.

I have a high pitched noise (it sounds like when I use a Dremel to cut a nail or using a dog whistle) coming from the bottom right side of laptop. It is random, sometimes when using it alot and other times I'm not doing anything. It can be a quick noise or a long drawn out whistle.

I ran BIOS and everything checked out, and the noise didn't happen when testing. The noise starts back up when Windows starts up.

I tried the suggestion that deals with the USB power managment, I tried disabling the Speedstep, disabling the BEEP file, it's not affected when speakers are mute or when microphones are turned off, and I don't think this comupter has bluetooth so that option is out.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Anything would be appreciated.

Hi, I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 7559 for school, my first laptop ever. It took me about 6 months to finally decide on a laptop, and I'm very happy with it...it's beautiful. But, I've had two problems with the display. First, there is some slight yellow discoloration on the right half, not a big deal, just my ocd, probably just some backlight bleed or something. But the big issue is that the screen brightness flickers constantly. I can only really notice it on the lower brightnesses, but I use those so its a problem. I've tried EVERYTHING. Tons of driver fiddling, power option fiddling. I cant tell if it flickers in the bios screen or lcd bist, but I've disabled both NVidia and intel HD graphics drivers and no matter what I do, it still flickers. This makes me think that this Is a hardware issue. If anyone has some insight, I would really appreciate it. Should I send it in for repair, or just wait a bit as I read online somewhere that the lcd backlight needs to "settle in" for it to stop flickering with takes a decent amount of screen on time. Sorry for the long post, but this is my first pc and I'm a little bit picky about the function of my things. Thanks.

First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.

Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

Unfortunately that only lasted 2 days so i gave lenovo another call. The second gentleman kindly uninstalled and reinstalled my driver (as stated in the support website, which i had already done) and so the brightness worked.. hi everyone,
im looking for clarification on a theory i have. so here is the situation.
i am trouble shooting at inspiron n5040 laptop. The laptop will not stay on longer then 10 mins WITH the power cord plugged in. Nor will it stay on on battery power alone. Now the pc tells me that the battery needs to be replaced, so i bought a new battery for this laptop. Same issue except the only difference is that with the new battery it no longer tells me it needs to be replaced.
Now event viewer is telling me that its a kernel Power 41 error. In my experience trouble shooting this its been the power supply is going bad. but since this is a laptop and it has a battery, im not sure how to go about replacing the "power supply" any thoughts???

I'm unable to adjust the screen brightness on my Yoga 920.  It's stuck.  The F11 and F12 keys do nothing. I have updated the BIOS.  I have reinstalled the driver.  When I do so, it fixes the problem ... until the next time the laptop goes to sleep or shuts down.  Then, when it comes back on, the brightness is stuck at wherever it was before. If I then reinstall the driver *again*, it fixes the problem ... until the next sleep/shutdown, when the problem reappears. A Lenovo support agent told me the only thing to do is a hard reset on the machine, restoring it to factory condition.  Obviously I'd rather not deal with that hassle if there's a less destructive way to fix the problem. Ideas?  Suggestions?

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.

What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.

I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.

Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

When I bought my DELL 3521 some weeks ago, which came with OS Ubuntu, I remember the screen brightness was adjustable by using Fn keys ( F4 / F5).
Since I installed Win7 some days back the screen brightness remain very dull ( may be the lowest setting), which I do not mind for my day to day work. But for my photo and graphic work this intensity is far from satisfactory.
I have checked the internet on this and saw many of you also share the same experience. I followed almost all the advices given in there and since there was no improvement, I downloaded all the drivers from the DELL official website for Win7 and installed them.  Actually then one thing happened, that is now I could see the on-screen brightness and loudness control icons or symbols.  Incindentally the sound (speaker) control works fine (Fn/F10/F11/F12), while the screen brightness indication appears without any response to the keys ( actually it indicates the maximum brightness in the scale and when I try to reduce the scale it reduces by scale/point and stays and would not move any further).  However, this has no change in the brightness of the screen, which as I already told, is low.
I have not yet decided to contact the dealer on this matter which could be a small issue perhaps, which I am uanble to come to terms with yet.
I do not know how to solve this problem. Is this a technical issue or a manufacturing fault? Could anyone help me please. Must be very grateful.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron with an i3 processor and Intel HD Graphics chip. It has a 15.6" screen and its model number is N5050. My problem is that the computer automatically adjusts the screen brightness based on what images are being displayed on the screen. (This happens only when the laptop is running on battery, when it's plugged in there's no problem) For instance when I open up a word document the screen becomes very bright because of the white background it is displaying but when the screen displays a darker image like a webpage with a black background the screen brightness noticeably dims. At first I just assumed this was some graphics or power saving setting. I checked both the Intel Hd Settings menu and the power savings menu but I couldn't find any options that corresponded to this description. Is there some well hidden setting causing this, is my laptop screen deffective, or is this just the way the laptop is? I need to know. It's driving me nuts.

A:How to disable automatic brightness adjustments on Dell Inspiron

I ran into the same problem and figured out what it was.  Signed up to post the solution since I know how frustrating it is when you Google for something and find nothing but people asking the same (unanswered) question.

Right-click on the desktop, select "Graphics Properties..."
Choose "Advanced Mode" and click OK
Click "Power"
Pull down the "Power Source" drop down and switch it to "On battery"
Uncheck "Display Power Saving Technology"
Click "OK"

No more irritating display flickering, adaptive brightness or whatever you want to call it.  IMHO, it's an annoying feature that should be disabled by default.

A:How do I Adjust the Brightness Level on my Dell inspiron 1705 notebook

you should have a key with " Fn" on the keytop. The printing should be red or blue
you then will have normal keys, Ummm , maybe the "F1-9" keys that will have the same color printing, you should have brightness and contrast. You have to hold down the Fn key then tap a key with the same color. You will have to look it could be a circle half filled in the sun , what ever on the key cap. There maybe other functions like key locks , sound... etc. the key locks effect the way the KB works.

Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter

Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.

I'd appreciate any input from you guys

A:New laptop not adjusting brightness

Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers

I had a look at the specs and it says "Integrated Intel? HD Graphics" which isn't helpful as there are different models of the Integrated Intel? HD Graphics

I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?

And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?

A:Adjusting Windows 7 brightness - what's the best way?

If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.
