Inspiron 6000, blue screen, can't read hd

Q: Inspiron 6000, blue screen, can't read hd

Fixing this Inspiron 6000 for a friend. Screen went black awhile ago, so can just barely see the "pattern" of the wording, but when it boots (in any mode) it ends up with a blue screen error, but it's not clear enough to read.
Took the hd out and hooked it to my laptop through an enclosure. My XP (through computer management only) can see the drive, with the correct size etc, but drive letter. Explorer can only see a small partition (about 45 mg) that has some extraneous files and one folder (named Dell). The o/s and data reside on the main partition which can't be accessed. Also, hidden is the Dell recovery partition.
I tried partition magic, and about 5 data recovery programs and none can see the o/s partition.
From posts on the net, I get the impression that I should be able to see the partition by using my computer.
Anyone with a little insight for me?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Do you get a bright, clear view when you boot to SAFE MODE (cold boot then press the <F8> key repeatedly once per second after you press the on button), as that bypasses a lot of potential video graphics problems.
Reporting what you get in SAFE MODE helps us get a bit closer to a fix.
It can be a hard drive, video graphics driver, LCD screen inverter burned out (a likely cause), and some other issues.
Also, is your Inspiron 6000 a Celeron or Pentium? What is the age, and what has been the usage, of the hard drive?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and today I suddenly got a blue screen error message, the main message said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". After rebooting, I got the same message. Then on the next reboot I couldn't get to the login screen.

I used my Dell OS Recovery CD that I created to try and repair Windows XP. It asked for a place to partition/fragment Windows, and then it went through copying files etc.

After that, I tried to restart, I got the normal Dell Boot screen but then it went to a black screen, with only a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I cannot do the Ctrl Alt F11 option to recover Windows XP, I can only either choose F2 or F12 at the initial boot screen.

Please help, I really do not know what to do!

What is the blue screen error message all about? I haven't installed any software or hardware so I do not see what might of caused the problem!

Was functioning normally, had just been using it, then my cat sat on keyboard for several seconds, immediately new tabs I opened in Google Chrome were incognito only and if tried to open a new website on an already open not incognito screen, that tab also switched to incognito...apparently some setting got changed when cat sat on it.  Cleared cache, closed Google and reopened, the issue continued.  Tried to reboot laptop, but it wouldn't (just nothing happened)....normally I have no problem rebooting. So I did a shut down through the computer's shutdown function (not manually).  It did shut down, but when I booted it back up, it got all the way to where my desktop should appear, then the blue screen:
STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error).  The Windows logon system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of Oxc0000005 (Ox00000000 Ox00000000) The system has been shut down.
Have tried to boot up about 5 times...every time gets all the way to desktop, then either that same blue screen code or this one:
STOP C0000145 (Application error.  failed to initialize properly Oxc0000142
A ridiculously older laptop I know, just needing it to hold out a bit longer until get get a new one.
Is there an easy fix?  It runs Windows XP is the other downside.  Thx if anyone can help.

HELP anyone..

I've been reading and reading every post I could find...and none say what to do when you can't get out of the error blue screen.

Here is my problem, I cannot get out of the blue screen (error screen) no matter what. I've tried F2,F8,F12 and everything. I can't even get it to start up in any of the safe modes?

Here is Error code:

***stop: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000,0x00000002,0x000000001,0xF8202A23)
** Ntfs.sys -adress F8202a23 base at f81f2000, dateStamp 45cc56a7

Like I said I can't get into the Laptop even in safe mode to try to disable anything at all and try to trouble shoot it.

Hope someone can help..

I have read all the posts and ordered a new inverter. It was actually very easy to change the inverter, but alas. After changing the inverter the screen still goes 'black' after a few minutes. It actually goes very very dim. I can barely see the outline of things on the screen. So, if the inverter was not the problem, what is the next thing I can try?

Have you tried running an external monitor? Is it normal or does it go dim too?

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum, but I almost sure it is not hardware related.

Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, Pentium M, 1.5 Ghz, 60g HDD, 1024MB DDr2 SDRAM, ATI Mobility Radeon x300

I can boot into SET-UP and all works fine,

Booting up in normal mode, it makes it past POST and the XP Splash screen, then just goes black. I can move the curser around and that is it.
Same thing is Safe Mode, but I can see the "Safe Mode" borders in the corners and up top.

I hooked an external monitor to it and get the same results on it.

I went into boot menu and chose diagnostics, and all passed, even the inverter. Was able to see all colors during the diag and as well on the Dell Drivers and Diagnostics CD I'm running right now.

I found some similar problems by Googling, but most said they didn't even make it to the splash screen, or it works in safe mode, but not normal mode, so nothing that has a clear resolve of what I have here.

Thanks, Terry

A:Dell Inspiron 6000 blank black screen

While running the Dell Drivers and Diagnostic Cd, during the the seek test on the hard drive, as it was almost done, I got a "Exception occurred in MODULE DISK.MDM! Warning: Error reading File! Press any key to abort" So I pressed a key and it rebooted, but now says the computer is missing the HDD. I went in Setup and Device Info/Primary Hard Drive, it says {none}, where as before it showed the 60G HDD.

I would not have thought a hard drive would have caused the first problem, or else it wouldn't have booted from the get go. Right?

Any ideas out there? Are the two issues one and the same? I would like to find out before I replace the HDD just to find out it still won't boot properly.

Thanks again for any help!

My Dell inspiron 6000 laptop stopped working. It shut off while I was online and when I try to restart it, it goes to the start up screen (black, says dell in blue letters) then the whole screen goes black and stays that way. I left for an hour and came back and the screen was still black. I have held the power button down until it restarts and that didn't work, I have pressed ctrl+alt+del and that didn't do anything either. I have also run a diagnostics test and everything passed. I have run out of things to try. Can anyone help me?

I'm trying to fix a friend's computer. It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I can't give more detailed specs because it's not in front of me. The problem is that after about 30 seconds after powering on, the screen goes dark. It happens no matter what - either a normal boot or a boot straight into BIOS. The screen goes completely dark but the power LED stays lit.

Obviously the problem isn't with the LCD/backlight, because the BIOS screen appears fine, although it doesn't stay on. I don't think the problem is with power either because we were running it off AC and the indicator light on the power supply stayed on. Plus the power LED stays lit and according to the BIOS, the battery is at 100%. It happens to consistently to be a loose wire or bad connection.

I have been checking out the different BIOS options, although it is hard when the screen keeps failing. I don't see anything that could cause this.

My theories, not that I am an expert at all, is it could be some kind of a screen saver or power management feature that keeps shutting down the monitor to save the screen or power. Or a temperature issue. By the way, are screen savers even necessary on a laptop? Or perhaps the problem is with the monitor switching feature - we're going to try hooking it up to an external monitor to see what happens.

So what's going on, and how do I fix it?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP Pro. This morning I received an error code M1004 (something about overheating) and the computer was frozen at that point. I cleaned out dust from the heat deck, as it was completely blocked with dust. I also did a hard shut-down then restarted, and all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can only use F2 or F12. I've tried running diagnostics with no help. I upgraded my BIOS with no luck. I also tried to run chkdsk from the XP repair module, and I'm getting a message saying that one or more volumes have unrecoverable errors. I also get a directory enumeration error when I try to use the dir command on the C drive. I'm trying to figure out what to do now, as I unfortunately didn't back up about 1 GB of pictures that I need to get off this hard drive. Please help. Thank you!

A:Black screen with blinking cursor & M1004 error code: Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP Pro

You can pull that drive out of the computer and put it on another computer as a Slave drive or buy yourself a USB enclosure and put the drive in there and you will be able to copy your pictures and any other valuable data. Then either buy a new drive (as this one may be bad) or put it back in and Boot off of the XP CD, Format and reinstall.

There is no dedicated Windows 8 Driver for the ATI Mobility X300/X600/X1300/X1400 graphics cards but I have documented that the Windows Vista Driver R153383.exe will install and work reliably in Microsoft Windows8.
The steps for installation are listed below:

Download the R153383.exe drvier from: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails?driverId=R153383 and extract the compressed files, then cancel the automatic installation of the driver (It crashed out on me when I ran the install)
From The Style UI interface, move the mouse pointer to the lower left corner, and Right Click, select Device Manager from the pop-up menu.
Click the arrow next to Display Adapter, Microsoft Basic Display should be listed.
Right Click the Microsoft Basic Display and click Update Driver, then select Browse My Computer ...., then Click Let Me Pick From a List ....
Click the HAVE DISK Button in the Install from Disk Window, browse to the C:\Dell\Drivers\R153383\Packages\Driver\Display\LH_INF folder and click CL_45540.inf then Click Open and OK to install the driver.

I have completed this process on both an Inspiron E1505/6400 and Inspiron 6000 and both systems are working fine, even power management seems to function well.

A:How to install Windows 8 video/graphics drivers for an Inspiron 6000/6400/E1505/8600/9100/9200/9300/9400/E1705 Latitude D610/D810 or Inspiron XPS notebook system

Can you get a multiple display with a projector? I was able to get the ATI Mobility x300 as the display adapter, but I can only get one display at a time. With XP, I could see my laptop screen duplicated on a projector and I would like to be able to do the same under Windows 8.
When I check the display with the Control Panel, it allows for only one display and the monitor is a generic PnP monitor and the adapter is the Microsoft Basic Display driver.
I didn't use the method that you suggested to get the X300 adapter.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Hi Akini1,
Welcome to Dell Community Forum. Please run the LCD BIST diagnostics to determine exact point of failure.
Here are the steps to follow to run the LCD BIST:
Boot to the PSA diagnostics.
To launch the PSA+ Diagnostics on this system, perform one of the following actions:

Hold down the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.
Turn on the system, press <F12> at the initial Dell™ logo screen, and select Diagnostics from the boot menu.

Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts and the message Diagnostic boot selected displays. The system then launches the PSA+ Diagnostics.

Watch the screen and listen for the color bar test prompt tones emitted by the PSA diagnostics.  NOTE: If the screen is visible, the PSA diagnostics draws a series of multicolored bars across the screen. Once complete, a prompt asking if the pattern was seen appears accompanied by a brief series of tones.
Press <N> or wait approximately 30 seconds to fail the color bar test. Watch for the LCD BIST color generation and listen for the beeps every 2 seconds that indicate LCD BIST is running. LCD BIST runs for approximately 20 seconds then stops. The 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 error code then is displayed upon the completion of the LCD BIST. I am trying to help a friend that has a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop running Windows XP Professional.

When the computer opens up to the desktop, I can't open My Computer, My Documents, My Music. I can open up Microsoft Office and even open files that i have saved on an external.

If I go into Safe Mode everything works fine. I can open My Computer, etc.

I have run a disk check and it shows no errors.

I have also run Malawarebytes and it found no malaware, viruses, etc.

I updated the virus definitions for Avast and ran a full scan. Found nothing.

I asked if he had a Windows Professional reinstallation CD and he said no.

I have done several system restores but none work.

I have a feeling it needs to have Windows Professional reinstalled. He doesn't have the disk. I just don't understand why everything works right in Safe Mode.

I believe some of the problem has to do with the hard drive. It is only 33 gigs. There is only 9 gigs free. I would think that if the RAM has been used and it switches to the swap file that there just isn't much resources on this computer.

I would sure appreciate any and all ideas that I might take. Thanks in advance.

A:Dell Inspiron 6000 Need Help Bad!!

Since it works in safe mode, let's do a clean boot and see what happens.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.
After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

There aren't any .dmp file in your attachment. These are required to analyse the BSOD.

Follow these steps:

1. Configure Windows to create minidumps:
Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

2. Set the paging file on C: to be the same size as the physically installed RAM:
Virtual Memory Paging File - Change

3. Set the Windows Error Reporting service to MANUAL:
Services - Start or Disable

Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Driver Verifier will cause your computer to run very sluggishly - this is normal. What it is trying to do is force your system to BSOD and isolate the offending driver/s. When it does, reboot, disable driver verifier, reboot as normal and upload the new dmp file/s here.

I recommend creating a system restore point before turning on driver verifier:
System Restore Point - Create

If your system fails to boot to desktop once driver verifier is enabled, turn it off by booting into Safe Mode:
Safe Mode

I got another random blue screen and those things always scare me... is it natural to get one every couple months?

Idk, still scary... I'm upgrading to a Phenom X3 here soon and would like to know I don't have any hidden problems.

Also can not defragmenting your computer cause a blue screen? If so I wanna think that might be my problem, seems every time i get a lot of fragmented files I blue screen.

Either way I uploaded the minidump via .rar file cause that's the only way I could figure how to.

Thanks in advance, hopefully it's nothing serious.

A:Blue screen read my minidump?

Next time you get the BSOD, please write down everything that appears in the message and post it here. Defragging never hurts, but there could be another underlying issue. If you are constantly installing/uninstalling apps/games and creating/saving documents, images, etc, I'd suggest defragging monthly.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and really need some help with a problem I keep getting with my brand new system.

I keep getting a blue screen error randomly, maybe once every couple of days:

(0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x805226E8)

The other thing i've noticed is that whenever I copy things to my hard drive, install a game or download programs, i keep getting errors saying files are corrupt or cannot be found. Even if i install a game from the original CD which i know works on another computer, it fails. For instance i installed Call Of duty four, skipping the files it could install, and when i try to load some levels it fails, while others its fine.

I'm not sure if these would be linked, i would assume they are. I have dump files, but when i downloaded the debugger from microsoft, the installer told me one of the cab files from the download are corrupt. I've also done several formats and tried RAID, the same trouble occur.

My best guess is that the RAM is too fast or too substantial for XP to handle and when the drivers and windows were installed there were errors.

Here is my new computers specs.

CPU: Q9450 (Intel quad 2.66)
RAM: 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz (G-Skill)
Mobo: Asus P5Q3 Deluxe Wi-fi
Graphics: Nvidia 8800GT (Gigabyte)
HDD: 2 X 500GB Sata (seagate)
Case: Antec Sonata 3 (500W)
Op System: XP Pro with SP3

If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am having persistent crashes when I load a blank disc into my DVD writer? It doesn't happen 100% of the time but does happen at random 50% of the time. I have fitted a new DVD writer, I have checked all IRQ settings and am just about to give up. Any ideas?

Also, when the PC crashes and goes to BSOD, how do I read it, it flashes by in about1/10th second!!

A:How do I read Blue Screen when it flashes by?

if you want to stop it from flashing away and find the complete erro code do this. click on start, then right click on my comp, properties, then choose advance tab, under start up and recovery click the settings. under system failure uncheck automatic system restart.

I'm also working on a Dell Dimension 4700 that has the BSOD. Except the blue screen doesn't list out any errors, it just tells me that Windows is being shut down to prevent any damage, and then the bit about making sure I have the most recent version of the Bios, etc, and then it lists out this group of numbers:

0X0000007E, 00C000007E, 0X804DB548, 0XF89C7BDC, 0XF89C78D8

I don't know which version of the Bios it's running now, but I downloaded the latest to a CD just in case. Only problem is I can't run it because it's not a bootable CD, and I can't get into Windows so I can load the file!

There haven't been any recent hardware changes. It was just moving along nicely and then BAM. Blue screen.

I have UBCD. But for some reason the full UBCD screen won't load on this PC. I can use some of the other features from the first menu, like Memtest, but I can't run any software (antivirus, etc) from within UBCD because it won't compeltely load. I've used the UBCD disk before, so I don't think it's a problem with the disk.

Is there any way to try and fix this short of having to totally reinstall the o/s?

Greetings All

I am reporting this as a known issue that I have resolved. I want to share this info in hopes it will prevent someone from needlessly formatting their system. The systems I have repaired did NOT have malware. It was a service driver issue.

I have not yet determined the magic configuration your machine must have to cause the blue screens but is does point to not having SP3 or IE8.

The only way to recover is to boot to recovery console and manually uninstall KB971486.

After getting to recovery console type the follwoing commands:

cd $NtUninstallKB971486$
cd spuninst
batch spuninst.txt
You will see a series of files copied and then drop you off to a prompt. Type "exit" (no quotes!) then press enter. Your machine will reboot and should load normally.

If you do nothing from this point the update will reinstall and hose you again. I would suggest you download SP3 (at the least) and take your chances. If you do not you will have to force automatic updates to forget this update. If you want more detailed help let me know.

This was originally posted as a hardware issue.

One night while looking at my husband's blog, my ESET antivirus told me that I'd been attacked twice. It "deleted" the problems; all good. Then I asked ESET to scan the computer; all good. Later, my husband tried to turn the computer off, but could get no response. He held the power button until the computer turned off.

The next morn I tried to turn the computer on. The Dell screen came up, then a black screen came on with the cursor in the upper left corned blinking twice then disappearing.
I tried, when the Dell screen came on, pressing F12, to do "Diagnostics"; it did some tests, then it said, "No diagnostic utility partition found. To run diagnostics, insert Dell "Drivers and utilities" CD, then OK to restart system and boot off the CD." Is that bad?

Then, I did this...
Try booting into Safe Mode. Completely shut down and then press the power key. Tap F8 repeatedly while it is starting up. This should put you into Safe Mode, which will tell you if your operating system is still in tact. It will also give you the option of restoring the system to a previous state. This often will overcome a startup problem. Also, if you get in this way, backup your files! There's a good chance you're going to lose something valuable from this point on.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook computer is underclocking itself. It is a Pentium M that is listed at 1.5GHz, but is actually running at between 1 and 1.1 GHz. I always have the computer plugged in, so power consumption is not an issue. Also, the backlight is broken, so I use a side monitor as the display instead, reducing the heat generated in the computer.

Unfortunately, heat seems to be a problem, with software telling me that the computer is already running at around 60C.

Is there any way for me to disable the underclocking, and would it be dangerous because of the heat generated? Since it is a Dell, I believe the clock speeds are blocked in the BIOS.

I have a old dell inspiron 6000 that I want to upgrade but don't know where to start or how to go about it. I want to upgrade the core with more GHz, upgrade the screen with better resolution, and install a wireless card. Problem is I don't what parts to get that would work or if any would and I plan on doing it myself so tips would be appreciated. I'm trying to upgrade for PC games because my desktop got stolen. So I need more space I guess.

A:Dell inspiron 6000 upgrades?

The Dell Inspiron 6000 is a low-end laptop that's several years old and worth less than $100.00.

It's NOT a gaming laptop and can't be upgraded to work as one.

If you want a gaming computer, you need to buy or build one that has the hardware to support the demands of gaming.

When I turn on the laptop I get no boot sector on internal HD - No bootable devices - strike F1 to try to reboot then I get 2 beeps.

I ran a diagnostics and it fails at the DST short test -

I cannot reformat it as it will not boot up to the CD no matter what I do.

Harddrive failure? It is 4 years old. It is used as a 3rd computer to check email, surf web, etc. etc. and I would like to get it fixed. Besides this problem I've had no problems with it whatsoever and it's been a pretty good little laptop.

A:Dell Inspiron 6000 won't boot up

Try removing the hard drive and put it back in. Turn on your laptop and see what happens.
Did you do F2 and change the boot sequence to boot into your CD rom drive? then save and exit and then try to boot into your CD.

When I press the power button, absolutely nothing happens. No lights, no sounds, no display. The adaptor lights up, but once I plug it into the laptop, it goes out. I've tried removing and re-inserting the battery, which should be charged up, but nothing happens. Does anyone know if this could be a hardware or power supply problem or something else? My warranty has expired, but I'd rather not have to take it to a repair shop. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I'm attempting to get Windows Aero effects to work with my Dell Inspiron 6000. I know that this model was not built to handle Vista, let alone 7, at its best.

I ran some of the diagnostics to see what is wrong with Aero and it said my video card (Intel 915GM/GMS, 910 GML) may be able to handle the effects but may need updated drivers. However, the dell website isn't allowing me to download the most recent video drivers. Does anyone know of any possible fixes to this problem, if any? Thank you in advance for any possible help/solutions.

Hi guys,
Currently having some problems with getting windows 7 to run correctly for me on my Dell Inspiron 6000. Im not a big computer guy so let me give you as much relevant info as I can.

A. Two weeks ago my computer crashed while running Windows XP. We took it into my moms work (software development company) and had a new hard drive put in as well as the Windows 7 Enterprise (serivice pack 1) Operating System.
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60 GHz 1.60GHz
Sytem: 32-bit Operating System

B. Everything was working fine until i tried to play an online game (Maplestory). After it was installed I tried running it and i get this message. Error -2147467259 (unknown error).

C. Did some research and found that this problem is mostly caused due to the video/graphics drivers being out of date or not properly updated.
Display adapter: Standard VGA Graphics Adapter
But some further research lead me to believe that the "above" is not my real driver, its just the name given to it when windows doesn't know the real name. I had it search for updates on all known drivers and all of them said they were fully updated.

D. I went digging around online and found "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor". It supposedly checks your system and lets you know whether you can run Win 7 or not with your current hardware. I ran it and heres what i got;
System: Windows Aero Support-My current graphics adapter does not support windows Aero
Devices: Video Controller-It says unkn... Read more

A:Win 7 on Dell Inspiron 6000 problems

When the Dell website says your model is not win7 compatible, it means Windows 7 won't run properly on it (which is true, as you've discovered) because Dell has not commissioned any Win7 drivers for it. Therefore, Dell's statement about it being incompatible is quite correct.

As for the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on Microsoft's website, you are supposed to run that before upgrading so that you can make an informed decision as to whether or not to upgrade the OS or buy a new PC with Win7 pre-installed instead.

The "Standard VGA Driver" is a 'real driver' that Windows uses when no other suitable third-party video driver is available, but it's only a generic driver with low resolution & low colour-depth, so quite unsuitable for games or apps requiring high resolutions.

The problem you have is that Dell hardware is custom-made so custom-made drivers are required. Only Dell has these custom-made drivers because they were specially written for that company. That's why you should have checked the driver situation on the Dell website before going ahead with the upgrade.

If the only problem you have is the lack of a proper video driver, you've been lucky.
You'll either have to live with that or re-install XP.

I was having trouble with my charger it had a short it in it. well with it being right before christmas i was trying to make it last until afterwards because god for bid I have to be without my laptop for a week. Well I kept moving the cord to fix the short and keep it working, when finally it quit charging all together so I bought a new charger and nothing no battery light not so much as a noise you hit the power button and it is Dead! So I took it apart and re soldered the charger plug thinking I had busted a solder on the plug because i kept miving the cord around to keep it charging. Used ohms meter and there is power to the plug and all the solders but still nothing. Any Idea what the problem could be i am desperate here too much of a computer geek to have my laptop down.
