Lenovo T470 - graphics card/driver issue? Black screen w flickering white boxes

Q: Lenovo T470 - graphics card/driver issue? Black screen w flickering white boxes

My encrypted Thinkpad T470 (2yrs old) has suddenly begun "crashing" during use. This doesn't seem to be triggered by any particular programs or user behaviour that I can identify, and once it happens it will occur again relatively soon if I restart it without a long rest. What happens is that the screen goes black, and white boxes flicker in and out. Sometimes I see white lines near the top, which I associate with graphics card issues, but I've never seen this white boxes pattern before. The laptp will not project on an external monitor, so it's not just a display issue. It does not fully shut down when this happens, but rather requires a force quit in order to restart. It restarts normally until it crashes again. Any ideas on what is happening here? Am I on the right track to suspect graphics card issues? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Okay great machine when its working, after 10 months screen started with White flickering screen, returned under warranty and LCD Module replaced. 1 month later same problem and shop tech guy had a look said it was an update issue and it appeared to be okay for the next 5 months, now its worse than the first time as the screen also goes between totally Black or flashing White screen. Using an external screen as it?s the only way I can access laptop, I searched this forum and done all the recommended fixes such as checking windows updates, Bios and Driver updates, also the one on starting up in safe-mode to check screen all with no resolution. What I have noticed is that when started from cold it works fine but after a couple off minuets it starts to flicker then after about 5 min screen goes totally. Possible heat or expansion issue? Now from what I have gleaned from the forum, this indicates a hardware issue, question is what or where in the hardware is the problem as this appears to be a common fault and you would expect Lenovo to have somewhere a more definitive explanation and how its fixed. Or is the screen connector the problem after reading the comments on this video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmSeKcFg3xU] and was replacing the LCD Module a red hearing and was re-fixing the connector during the repair, is what fixed the flickering screen?

Evening all, I have a Lenovo Z50-70 laptop that I'e had for a good few years now. Everything on it works absolutely fine until approximately four or five months ago an intermittent issue began to occur with he screen. Sometimes when I power the machine on, but more frequently when I try to wake the device after the screen has gone to sleep, I am left with either a blank white screen or sometimes a mixture of white and black vertical or horizontal lines. The only way I can get the screen to work again when this happens is reset the machine, but sometimes this take three or four attempts, sometimes even more. Other times the machine works perfectly, with absolutely no issues. I have plugged the machine into an exteral display and confirmed the system is still working fine, just the device screen is not displaying anything. Any ideas? Or am I just going to have to shell out for a replacement? Thank you.

Hello,

Quite recently, I noticed that there were little black box flickering in my games. My GPU is an ATI 4870 HD 512 MB. I did not overclock this GPU. First, it came when I got myself Shogun 2 Total War, and then in all my other games that I played after that.

Here is a pic:

It flickers on for a split second and off and keeps coming back. I did notice though that when I alt-tabbed for a few seconds, and then came back, it took a little while before they came back.

Also, this has nothing to do with heating because the max temp that my GPU will ever hit is 50C and on idle it's 38C with a Accelero heatsink.

I thought this had something to do with the latest 11.6 update I installed, so I uninstalled and driver-sweeped my ATI driver and installed 11.5, but no luck!

Along with that, I noticed that on Youtube, when I went into full screen mode, the screen would be black BUT playing but then flash on and continue the video from where it flashed on. Also, when I got out of the Youtube full screen, the video would be playing but the image on the video would be what I saw before I went into full screen for a few seconds.

I tried reinstalling flash in chrome, but to no avail.

I am on windows 7 64 bit ultimate.

Help please!

Also, to add, I've had a few BSODs when switching in and out of fullscreen in Youtube!

I've been having some weird oddities with my computer as of late. Completely at random, my screen will go black (for around 3 - 5 seconds) before eventually coming back on again and I'm noticing some weird, small, white horizontal lines randomly appearing across my monitor for about half a second, then disappearing. At first, I thought I was seeing things... but a friend of mine can back me up on this.

It seems to start and stop randomly, but I think it's getting worse. Often, the screen will go black, come back on, and then the process repeats several times before it seems to settle down back to normal again. The white lines appear while the computer is doing this, but not when the screen has gone back. They dot all around the screen, it's very hard to describe them... it doesn't look good, anyway.

I am convinced this is not my monitor. I have a funny feeling it's my Nvidia GTS 250 graphics card bugging out. I've checked the fan and the temperatures and all seems fine. I've re-installed the drivers and it still happens. I've dusted and re-inserted the card, no dice. It seems to happen completely at random and it's bugging me.

Has anyone had a similar problem before, or might have a clue what is causing this? I was planning on upgrading my machine in March anyway, but I was hoping my GPU might last a little longer (I've had it for two years or so now.)

Cheers.

A:Is my graphics card dying? - Black screen, odd white lines.

I'd be interested to know what your fps benchmark is. evga oc scanner is good. I have dual 460 gtx and the benchmark is around 95 fps. When I installed these in a new board my screen would go black when I paused for anything i.e. to agree to a download. I get a small vertical line loading a game but it didn't worry me for some reason. My benchs are ok, not impressive. After 2 or 3 restarts it hasn't frozen since. If your temps are good and it benchmarks ok I don't know enough and I'm not confident enough to answer questions. Somebody will help you. They put up with me. This is the best forum I've been on yet.

Hi, my video card died this morning so I installed one from a different computer. I have a three year old Dell Vostro 410 running XP Pro. I took out an nvidia G310DE from a different Dell computer and put it into my computer. I managed to get a display so I uninstalled the old ATI drivers, restarted and installed the new nvidia drivers. When I restarted, I got a black screen with a white square cursor after the windows splash screen. I can boot into safe mode with no issues though. I've tried the driver from the nvidia website, the dell CD, and let windows look for drivers. Each time, I get the same result.

I've been at this for the past 4 hours now and can't think of what else to do. Thanks for your help!

A:Installed new graphics card and drivers - Black screen with white box cursor on start up

<<I've tried the driver from the nvidia website, the dell CD, and let windows look for drivers>>

Why would you use the drivers from the Dell CD...which I would think are only for the Intel onboard video?

Did you disable the onboard video in the BIOS settings?

Did you completely uninstall all the ATI software...both via Device Manager and via Add/Remove Programs?

I think I'd take a look at Device Manager and see what's reflected there.

Hello,  I have the Lenovo y40 with the intel i7-4510 and wthe AMD Radeon R9 M275 graphics card. About 1 month ago, I was in the middle of a game when my computer just shut down and gave me a blue screen. Since then, I have been unable to run my computer with the graphics driver enabled. At first, I thought it may be a driver issue and have tried both the Lenovo drivers from their page (which seemed a bit outdated) as well as the AMD drivers from the website, neither of which have worked.  Furthermore, I did do a fresh install today in hopes that would fix it, however, it did not. I get the same thing, the moment it recognizes that the AMD card is working I get a BSOD.  Some of the error codes that I have gotten with the BSODs are as follow: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER, BAD_POOL_HEADER, KERNAL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, BAD_POOL_CALLER, VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (NTFS.sys).

Yesterday I was installing the drivers for my new graphics card when the computer crashed and the screen went black. So after a few minutes I decided to turn it off and on again however it powers on but is no longer displaying an image. I've tried swapping my old graphics card back in but it still has the same problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have a 2 year old system that was working perfectly with the following specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate SP1
CPU: Intel Core i5 2400, 3.10 GHz
RAM: 4 GB Single Channel DDR3 821 MHz
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67LE
Graphics Card: Gigabyte - GV-R685OC-1GD
HDD: 932GB Western Digital WDC WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0

Suddenly one day when I was using the computer normally, the screen went black... There was no cursor, no desktop and Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't do anything. I hard rebooted, it started up fine and the windows logon screen appeared. However, as soon as I typed in my password and hit enter, the screen went black again, no cursor, no desktop and unresponsive. Sometimes some funny gray lines would appear on the screen but otherwise it was black.

I looked extensively for answers on this forum and it seemed to be essentially the same problem as described here (Black screen of death in Windows 7 64-bit Professional) so we used Stevan23's post as a troubleshooting guide. We tried virtually everything on Stevan23's list that was relevant to my system, and just like his experience, we never saw the black screen in safe mode.

My partner and I both have identical systems (identical hardware, except he runs a Linux OS), so I was able to test my graphics card in his system. Exactly the same thing happened, i.e. computer starts up ok but the screen goes black after the bios screen and never loads the desktop.

We also tried his identical graphics card in my system; it's working fine ... Read more

I recently had an issue, whereby my computer would no longer startup for unknown reasons. In order to fix this, i found a windows 7 cd (previously windows 8) and installed it. It was all going well until i attempted to update my graphics card driver. Each time i do so, i get as far as the windows logo on startup, the computer somewhat reboots, and it goes straight to a black screen with only my mouse visible. Every time, i have to go into safe mode, uninstall the driver, and carry on without. My graphics card doesn't appear in the 'windows experience index' under either 'graphics' or 'gaming graphics'. Any help would make me a very happy boy, thanks!

When i power down laptop and boot again (sometime few times) intead of the black screen there is a prompt for Bios password, like it should have and booting continues to OS.Enter key for BIOS doesnt work while it slill get stuck on black screen just right before it loads the BIOS (after trying few times with power -off/on it gets to BIOS and i can boot normally)I have BIOS firmware updated to the latest version, so as well drivers for hardware.Im not aware of any change that could potentionally start this issue, maybe after updating bios to some newer version.Otherwise im using Windows 10 with latest updates, but i dont think this could cause the issue as its way before windows loading. Thanks for the help.

Hi everyone, I have an issue with the display connectivity on my Lenovo E460: When I connect my Lenovo via HDMI with an external screen it works perfectly well. This means that I have an output on my integrated display, as well as on my external screen. But when I disconnect the HDMI screen, the integrated display turns black. But while it's black it's also flickering. That means that now and then I can see the desktop for a few milliseconds, and then it turns black again. The flickering happens primary when I move the mouse. The remaining time it's just a black screen. I also had the behaviour when Windows 7 was installed. But the problem solved itself after a while when Windows 7 suggested a Desktop Window Manager update in the Windows Update section. But now I upgraded to Windows 10 and the problem returned. I installed all driver I could find on the Lenovo homepage. I also made sure it's the latest version. When this didn't help I installed the official drivers on the Intel homepage. I did the same for the AMD drivers, because there is also an AMD graphic card on board. In addition I experimented a little bit with AMD beta drivers, but the effect remained the same. Technical specifications:- Intel Core i7-6500U (Intel HD 520)- AMD R7 M360- Windows 10 Pro N (1703) with Media Feature Pack installed I would be grateful for any tips and solution you can offer! Best regardshgt432

Hi

Does it do this in Windows?

1. Try going into Safe Mode
(Restart the laptop -> press F8 -> on the Advanced Startup Options menu select Safe Mode.)
Once in Safe Mode see if it does the same thing. Please let us know.
(This will determine if it is the display driver)

2. Attach an external monitor. See if it does the same thing on the external monitor.
(This will determine if it is the monitor)

3. Restart the laptop. Press F8 to display the Advanced Startup options menu.
Leave the laptop on the menu for a while and see if it does the same thing.
(This will determine if there is something wrong with Windows)

Please let us know the results.

My ~2 week old Lenovo Flex 5's screen started to flicker a few days ago and the issue has become progressively worse since then to a point where most of the screen is covered by black flickering at times. The computer starts fine, but when the computer is moved and especially when the screen is moved up or down the flickering appears. Sometimes the flickering only starts after the computer has been on for a few hours (restarting the PC fixes the issue for a short while). I have tried updating to the latest Intel graphics drivers in the device manager to no avail. I then tried uninstalling the display drivers from the device manager, that only seemed to work for a short while. Is this a faulty screen that should be RMA'd immediately or is it likely a software-related issue?

Hi there, I bought a Lenovo Yoga 910, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD 4K laptop in September 2017. I've had no major issues with it until the past few days. What is happening is that when I'm watching a video, on seemingly any player, after a while the screen starts going crazy, it's fairly hard to describe so I'll link a video to it. https://sendvid.com/eoi9k12k Once that starts to happen, any time I mouse over anything the screen flickers, and anytime I open anything (e.g. an internet tab/the start menu) it goes back to the original freak out style. If I manage to minimise everything and sit on the home screen with the mouse not touching any icons then the screen is fine.  I feel like there was an update fairly recent prior to this starting, so whether that is the cause or not I'm not sure. I'm a standard computer user, so for information that is required I'll likely need pointing out how exactly I go about finding said information or performing said task if it's not pretty basic.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

This seems to be  a problem with many yoga 730-13 users, My screen keeps flickering, to a point where i constantly have to adjust my screen to stabilize the screen. Sometime it gets unbearable to a point where I cannot even use my laptop anymore. This has happened to me previously and at first i installed the new BIOS update and did whatever Lenovo told me to do, but it did not work. Eventually, my laptop would not turn on for some reason. I did send it back for repair, and the laptop seemed to be working fine for that first week, then the screen flickering issue happened again. At this point, I am lost at what to do? has anyone else found a solution to this problem? is there a way lenovo could possibly recall this model, or atleast give our money back since this seems to be a manufacturer issue?

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit, Select All" then click on "Edit, Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi...I am hoping to get some guidance on an issue that I am having.  We bought my daughter a Yoga 730 for college in July and she started experiencing issues with the screen flickering to the point she cannot use it except for in tablet mode.  In tablet mode she says it does not flicker at all but it is harder for her to use (and she honestly should be able to use it as a laptop also..that is why we chose the Yoga).  I purchased it via Amazon and their tech support sent links to update the BIOS etc. which my daughter has done but the flicker continues. My problem(s) are these 1) Get the flicker issue resolved.  Since it works fine in tablet mode it most likely is not a software issue and I have read quite a few posts online about the wire to the display being pinched but need someone who knows about these things to take a look at it and resolve the issue.  2) She is at college 13 hours away and needs to use her laptop on a daily basis for school.  The 13 hours means I cannot drive over to her dorm and take a look at it and her need to use it means she cannot go without a machine for long. If someone could provide some insight into how Lenovo typically handles these types of issues and what type of turnaround time she can expect?  There is a warranty place near where she is at school and that might help with the shipping time etc. but not sure. Thanks in advance....

Hi - My display is flickering and it goes off quite frequently. It also causes the computer the hang up when trying to do other tasks. Is there something wrong with my graphics card or driver? I attempted to update the driver and no change. I've tried updating the driver and I get error messages indicating that it can't be done.

I have a Dell 8200 that was purchased in 2003. The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200. Any recommendations on where to start troubleshooting, or should I just go get another graphics card?

Thanks!

After making sure that your vga cable is connected good, it's possible that it's going out, I only got a year out of my FX5200

Greets all.

I thought I'd finally try and get my computer and TV hooked up properly, so as to view computer content on the TV. I've got a Sapphire Radeon 9250 video adapter, with 256 MB memory. My TV is somewhat old, so I connect to it through my VCR:s SCART plug. The cable I use has a SCART plug in one end (goes in the VCR) and in the other end an S-VIDEO plug and a stereo plug. I've connected the S-VIDEO plug to my video card, but left the stereo plug hanging as I assume that one's only for sound which will do fine to get through the speakers I have for my computer.

The problem is that although I do get an image on the TV, it's in black and white. I've played around with the settings in my ATI Catalyst Control Center as well as the graphics settings of the regular control panel, but can't find a way through it. Among the things I've tried are setting my resolution to 60 Hz, trying out fewer colours (16 bit and 256 colours), and lowering my resolution. I've also tried B/PAL, G/PAL and H/PAL.

The formats in all of this really isn't anything I know a lot about, that I'll admit, though I'd be very grateful for any help. If there's any more info I can provide, just ask, I'll monitor this thread. Also I suppose it could just be that my TV is too old to hack it, but shouldn't the VCR through the cable that fits there be able to give it a signal it can understand fully, that is also with colour? Well, tha... Read more

There have been numerous posts about S-Video cables producing black and white features, but hear me out before saying: change the cable, change the adapter, change the video player, etc. I've read a lot so far about such problems, but there wasn't really a similar problem described like mine so here it is:

Setup:
scart to composite/S-video adapter with [email protected] videoplayer
S-video cable 15m
MSI geforce NX6600GT with s-video out

You probably noticed the long cable, but I think only image quality can be affected by that, and not the colour information. If I'm wrong, please tell me, otherwise let's not take the length of the cable into account.

Description: Only getting a black and white image on the tv when cloning or using a dual view with detonator drivers. Tried both MSI drivers included with the geforce and the latest detonator drivers v77.72.
Both gave me a black and white image.

Funny thing: I get full colour when:
1) I used my geforce4 ti4200 with same setup (but I'd like to use my newer graph card ofc)
2) I uninstall my detonator drivers and cloning is automatically on (but obviously this is not an option either, no direct3D, no opengl no nothing)
3) during bootup before it loads the detonator drivers (I even get a Windows logo in colour).

Installing the detonator drivers makes the footage black and white. Also at the same time when I use the S-Video, I use the composite out which DOES give me a full colour even ... Read more

A:Black and white image using S-video cable to SCART - Driver Issue?

You'll be the one to actually sort it out, you've the hardware to use and to see for yourself.

Simplified - There're 3 seperate distinctions causing combinations of problems... S-VIDEO, Composite, NTSC/PAL.

S-VIDEO - The Chroma signal gave you color, unlike the Luminance signal which gave you black and white, Chroma is an extremely phase-sensitive signal.

Additional cable length or additional adapter meant additional extra delay, additional extra phase shift, and too much of it be resultant of wrong color or no color at all, no color by default is Luminance only which got through and is black and white.

Composite - The Chroma signal is encoded as a color burst (still Phase-sensitive) within the Luminance signal (in the front-porch segment).

Composite is LESS sensitive ("less sensitive" does not mean "impervious") to color loss than S-VIDEO from the fact that Chroma being embeded within Luminance partially compensated for the extra delay or extra phase shift (they shifted together better).

Composite is more *****-proof than S-VIDEO, S-VIDEO is more *****-proof than RGB.

NTSC/PAL - The basic difference is frequency, a frequency change IS a phase shift. eg, resulting in wrong color or no color at all on top of sync problems.

I recently bought a Sigma Real-Magic X-Card.
I connected a S-Video kabel to the S-video output. At the TV I used a S-Video to SCART connector. The picture is Black and White. Why?

A:Black and White screen on X-card

sounds to me like viewing a SECAM output on a PAL TV or vice-versa....

SECAM, the french system, has the same line number as PAL, the UK system, but a different color.

Hence, they display as B&W on each others displays

Hi,I'm looking for help diagnosing the problem with my lenovo y50. I have had it for nearly 3 years now and it has been pretty great for the most part. However, recently the screen started acting  up and going white or black and displaying multicolored lines on screen (I will attach pictures). I looked online for solution including this forum and updated the bios and tried disconnecting the screen connector and making sure it was connected well behind the screen. Ultimately none of this worked and so I am considering replacingthe screen and the edp flat cable. I just wanted to see ifI'm correct in assuming these may be the problem as I even connected the laptop to an external monitor and it worked fine therewith no lines. I will say moving the screen around does help make it visible again. Anyway thanks.

The flickering issue happened many times before on my X1 yoga 2nd gen (OLED), the screen flickers like crazy that I cannot look at the screen when I unplug the laptop. Somehow I fixed it by updating or rollbacking the intel graphic 620 driver several times before. However, this time, I have tried several versions of the Intel Graphics 620 drivers including the latest ones on Lenovo support page and Intel website, none of them worked that I have to uninstall the Intel Graphics Driver and live with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter for now. But then I cannot adjust the brightness or using the night light mode, which is also terrible. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

There are 4 white boxes on the left side from CPU labeled 1,2,3,4 on the Lenovo Y50 motherboard (please attached photo). My replacement motherboard has box 4 marked with a marker. I am wondering what those number mean. Is it some kind of indication of the motherboard grade and if so, is lower number higher grade or opposite?

Hi there,  i was working on the computer yesterday when all of a sudden my screen turned black and white, and hasn't gone color except when it's locked. I can't find anything in the control panel to fix it, and my drivers are up to date. The one solution I saw offered for a similar issue was to put windows+ctrl+c, but that doesn't do anything for my screen. I've restarted it too, of course.  Help! I'm an interior designer and NEED color. I'm assuming the attached image is black and white? but can't really tell.
