Computer runs, screen is black.

Q: Computer runs, screen is black.

Just a little backround on my laptop. It's about six years old, and has 8 gig of RAM and optional ATI Radeon graphics. It has been used heavily as I do electronic medical records with it as well as personal stuff. It's not turned off very often; I just keep it in hibernation. One day a couple of weeks ago I had several tabs open in Chrome, one of them being SiriusXM streaming. My back was turned as I was with a patient and all of a sudden I heard a buzz coming from the audio that lasted a few seconds, then no sound. When I finally looked at the computer, the screen was black, but everything else was running (leds, hard drive, fan, etc). I pulled the AC power and the battery, restarted Windows in safe mode, and had a display. I then deleted the video drivers for ATI and Intel, then restarted the computer. It came back with the screen looking fairly normal to before it went belly up, and also had sound. Windows then automatically reloaded the video drivers (during which time a box came up and told me the ATI driver didn't exist) and then prompted me to restart. I did, and sound, leds, hard drive, everything came up except black screen again. Well, I repeated this several times, even went and downloaded the ATI driver off of the site, with the same result. At that point I decided to use the computer as it was after the first restart and select "restart later" so it wouldn't go back to the black screen. It worked like this for a while, until a repeat of the original incident of audio buzz and black screen.I talked to an IT friend who suggested I clean the RAM's contacts. Did this and went through the same process as above.. same result. So at that point I decided to dump all my personal files onto an external HD and restore Win 7 via the HD's D: partition. This was also because for some reason all of my printer drivers were gone as well when viewed in "System" and I wasn't able to restore them either.Well, I did the restoration from D:, restarted and got the message "Windows will now configure your computer". Then, black screen. So, I restarted in safe mode. Screen came back. Message again about Win configuring computer. Then a pop-up box, "Windows cannot configure in safe mode, now restarting your computer". Well it did, and you guessed it, black screen. So I'm figuring I'm screwed at this point. I took the laptop apart hoping I could pull the video card upgrade and maybe that would solve the problem. Well, there isn't a card.Given the age of the computer and it's use, I don't want to waste money on a new hard drive if that isn't the problem. Because of the two incidents of the sound going bad followed by the black screen, I'm thinking a motherboard problem. If anyonne has any other ideas I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, I think I'm going to have to get a new laptop. Thanks! -Matt

Preferred Solution: Computer runs, screen is black.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I'm not sure what the problem might be, it might help to plug in a VGA or HDMI display to see if you can get a display there to help diagnose it? You might also check if a BIOS firmware upgrade is available also.

when i turn the power switch on the lights come on on the motherboard. the computer will start, harddisk runs and fans are spinning. i dont have a speaker for beep noises. screen is just blank, no signal. tried setting the graphics card in another computer where it runs fine. tried 2 different harddisks, tried powering up without harddisks, tried reseating components and removing ram sticks to check. nothing works. i can afford a new mobo or cpu, but how do i know which of them is faulty? i suspect the motherboard. also tried setting the graphics card in another slot, no luck. normally on my other computer when i turn it on, the graphic card fan will run hard for a few secs then settle once entering bios or post or what it is u call it, when setting it in the bad computer it just runs hard until i shut it off again. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Umm ok, hoping this is the right spot.

So... hello... and thanks to all of you lovely computery people out there for even reading about my problem.

So today i was watching a video online, and the screen just went black, but the sound of the video was still playing normally. I turned off the computer (didn't know how else to stop it). Anyways, upon restarting, the screen is visible for about one second and then goes black. The right side of the screen is brighter than the left if that means anything to anyone. I can tell by the sounds that it restarts normally except for the screen which remains black.

When i put the laptop to sleep and reopen it the screen is visible for again 1 second or so, and then goes dark. That screen is the log in screen so i know the rest of the computer works fine up to that point.

If I shine a flashlight at the screen i can see the screen, but barely.

Computer details for anyone interested.
Toshiba Satellite A200
Windows Vista
4 years old
(not sure what else you would need to know)

Ok, so a couple questions from all that.

1) Can anybody tell what's wrong with it?

2) If i hook it up to another monitor of some sort, can i bypass the screen issue?

3) Assuming whatever is wrong with the screen is fixable, is it better/cheaper just to buy a new computer instead?

Well that's all i can think of. Please try and help me out if you can, i would really appreciate it.
Thank you all, hope to hear from you,
Indebted as always,

A:Solved: Screen went black but computer still runs fine

Sounds like it could be the Inverter/ backlight

Yes you can hook an external monitor and use it that way.

If it is the inverter/backlight....not too expensive and fairly easy to install

My laptop from time to time will just shut down the screen to a black screen, I can still hear things running in the background, example a game will be playing but nothing on screen. I have to push the button to shut the whole computer down and restart, could it be the screen going, or is there a fix for this, Thank you so much,

About six months ago, my machine started giving me a black screen during the boot up process. As soon as I turn it on, I see the manufacturers logo (dell) for about 1 second, then it gives me a black screen with a flashing white cursor in the upper left hand corner. This screen last about 3-4 minutes, then it boots windows XP normally.

Last week I was in the room while it was booting, and I noticed that it was accessing the network during the black screen portion of boot up (activity light on cable modem was flashing, alot), which got me motivated to fix it. (not sure what that means). I ran virus scanners (McAfee) which found nothing, but I did check the log file in my scanner which shows that my auto virus screening is diabled everytime I boot the machine????

Checked partitions on the hard drive, found 2- my c:, and an unnamed partition of about 30 megs. (I dont remember putting a second partitions on there - would the manufacturer put that there to use as a virtual memory??)

Deleted all partitions and reformated the hard drive yesterday, and reloaded XP, but that still didn't solve it.

Loaded and booted the Windows Recovery Console, and ran the FIXMBR command twice, both times I get the message that "It appears your MBR is corrupted" or something like that but it doesn't fix it.

Do I have some sort of virus in the MBR that my virus software (McAffee, was up to date before my reformating) never caught or is this a hardware is... Read more

A:Black Screen on Boot up for ~3 minutes, then runs ok

Boot Error

You say it is accessing the network during boot this might be due to you're boot priority in the BIOS.
Go into you're BIOS and set you're boot priority to:
First: Floppy
Second: CD/DVD
Third: HDD or HDD0

Hopefully this should resolve you're slow boot up.

Also you can not create 1 partition with you're hard drive the computer does not use 100% HDD when formatting as for it takes probably around 30MB for it self to do what it has to do so that is not a virus.
Hope this helps you.

Hi Community
I have a problem with my VOSTRO 3360. At power on the hard drive LED flashes a couple of times and I can hear the disk head moving and then the fan  speeds up and nothing else occur. The fan keeps running at high speed and the screen remains black all the time.
I have made following tests:
1. When I remove the RAM from the pc I can hear 2 diagnostic beeps.
2. If I keeps pressing the F2 key during and after pressing the power botton I hear after a second or so, short beeps, as when the keyboard buffer is full.
3. I have disconnected the main battery and removed the coin-cell battery. When the batteries are reconnected I hear 5 diagnostic beeps at the first power on. After cycling the power I hear no beeps and it starts as initially described.
Any good ideas are appreciated.Thanks.

Help!
My computer screen goes black, the sound goes jerky and then stops and the fan runs really fast. This is apparently random, I have run checkdisk and there are no errors. It happens when computer is cold so is not overheating. It was happening a few weeks ago and I figured it was my 4 year old processor or my mother board so I replaced both and got a new power supply but now it is happening again. When it happened before my hard disk was corrupted so I removed everything from it, formatted it and reinstalled windows, but this time my hard disk is fine. The only bits left of my old computer are my hard disk, my graphics card (which is only a year old) and the wires. I don't know what to do.

Hi, I am a new IT person at a very small school. Our receptionist has a OptiPlex 3030 All In One. Her computer has been working fine, but this morning when she turned it on it just powered up and the screen stayed black. We tried numerous times to restart it and we keep getting the same result. I've now unplugged it and we haven't touched it in a while. I'm not quite sure what to do in this situation. I am going to try connecting another display to it. But I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution to this? I read somewhere that inserting the OS disk and reinstalling the Windows 10 would work, but I don't want to have to do that.

Hello I've been experiencing issues with my computer I wasn't around when it happened but I was told it happened in this order. BSOD > Repaired > BSOD > Repaired then it would start up but no video would appear on the monitor. I've troubleshooted this issue before I was told to confirm the motherboard is alive I did so by removing the ram and turning on the computer and it made a beeping noise. I've replaced the power supply thinking maybe the power supply was the problem.

Tried different monitors that wasn't a issue since they work on the other computer. Also tried a different video card. The bios don't even show up when I power up the computer the fans and everything runs. I hope this information helps.

A:Computer runs, but video on monitor is black

Try running a memory test. It is a bootable CD. If the monitor still doesn't come on you might try a different cable.

Hi there, please go easy on me, I'm not computer smart ;(.

I have a Packard Bell computer with a Nvidia graphics card (see my specs for proper info) which has been working fine with no problems for over 2 years. Then yesterday it just decided it didn't want to show anything on the screen when I turned it on. Now the computer would start (lights, fans) but not show anything on the screen. It also beeps at me, 1 long beep and 2 short beeps with basically no pause between beeps; which I tracked down to be a Display adapter problem (MDA, CGA).

I tried swapping out my graphics card with a "PNY NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 PCI-E Graphics Card" but to no avail. I have reseated the CMOS battery in an attempt to reset the BIOS and am running out of ideas.

Please feel free to ask questions about my system and i'll do my best to find an answer. Thank you for all answers on this matter.

Today, when we went to turn it on, the screen would only turn on for about 30 seconds, and then it would go blank. You could still hear the computer running though. Then when we shut it down and tried to start it in safe mode, we weren't able to. It said something like "No support", but when we tried starting it how we usually do, it worked. Now it's working really slow, and the screen keeps on freezing.

Hi -

Is it a laptop or desktop?

If laptop, try connecting an external monitor. A laptop here loses monitor a few seconds after boot due to a known hardware issue.

If desktop, try another cable +/or monitor.

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

It seems everyday my computer gets slower and slower and I have to reboot often throughout the day to get it to run somewhat smoothly again. HI,
I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Thanks

Also I had some kind of fake Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) asking me to download more fake AV's onto my computer but I knew well enough that it was fake so I close it. This also shows up in safe mode. MSE block me from opening things such as iexplorer.exe or sometimes it would say tskmanager is a virus and it wouldn't let me open anything. So eventually I google this up, and I read somewhere that told me to rename hotfix.exe to hotfix1.exe when I run %APPDATA% so the annoying MSE would stop showing up. It also told me to update my Malwarebyte which I still can not do because I still do not have access to the internet. By the way I am using another computer to type this. So again, I tried to do some more research to fix my internet problem and I found this site that told me to download KillGodzilla.exe and run it and reboot my computer, after that I should update my Malwarebyte but of course, I can't do that because after the WINDOWS loading screen, the blue log in screen doesn't show and displays a black screen which flickers sometimes, after a few minutes it would restart my computer. Also same thing for safe mode. Does anyone know what is going on? Did I screw up my computer to badly? Do I need to reset my BIOS? I am using Windows XP if that helps. I also hav ESET smart security on my computer but I can... Read more

hi all, a recent problem has occurred with my computer. whilst playing games, i can play for a few minutes, and then a black screen appears, with sound looping and the screen status colour changes from solid green to flickering green. This is XP Professional by the way.My system is as follows:P5N-E Sli MoboC2D E750 2.66ghz2.0 gb ramXFX 8800GTS 320mbThe games in which this occur are as follows:Team Fortress 2Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionGuild WarsHowever, what is strikingly odd about this problem is that it only occurs about 80% of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion absolutely perfectly.I have searched forums, and it seems this can be linked to overheating, but my temperature gauge on the front of the computer says I run at about 30 C most of the time, and the computer itself is not hot inside at all. All fans are spinning fine, no dust.I have heard other issues such as graphics card drivers, and i have tried 3 different drivers, all of which did not overcome this problem.Could it possibly be sound drivers? Or possibly something wrong with the motherboard? Thanks in advance.Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

Last night I downloaded a file from a Torrent site - Blackberry stuff (I'm pretty sure most or all was freeware stuff). I just noticed that that file has been removed. Kinda unfortunately because I did leave a comment on what happened to me and I asked if anyone else had the same issue. I'm guessing maybe they did because it is gone now.

I ran my AVG scan on it before opening it. It didn't find anything so I ran the executable. It locked up at one point after I started getting virus warnings from some new program (I did not write down what any of it was :-( ).

I had to do a hard shutdown. When it came up to my choices window, i.e. choose Safe Mode, Last Know, etc. I was unable to make any selections with my keyboard so it continued to boot Windows normally. The XP splash screen comes on and then the screen turns black with nothing further happening.

I can do a hard reboot but I can't get into Safe Mode because the keyboard isn't working and normal windows isn't working either.

Got any suggestions? Do I have some serious funk? Did some piece of hardware decide to stop functioning properly (power supply)?

I have been Googling this issue without any success. Sometimes it feels like you are the only one to ever have a particular issue.

This happened very late last night and now I am at work so I'm not able to touch it for the next 5 hours or so. The only two things that I can do right now is go into the BIOS settings or watch it go into Windows and then get the... Read more

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

Hi everyone! I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I need your help!

I have an old (meaning I got it in 2000) Gateway Essential. It was working fine until Monday afternoon. My mom was using it and the screen went black. The monitor was still on and the power light on the tower was on, but it wasn't doing anything. When I restarted the computer, it brings up an error with my GoBack feature, saying that there could be a corrupt file in some software or a problem with the drive. It says to go through scandisk, which I do and it goes through and starts up fine. Then if I try running the anti-virus, log on to AOL to go on line, it will work for a few minutes, and then the same thing happens again. I restart it again and go through the whole process. I've run the defragger, uninstalled AOL and my Kodak Easyshare software and my Scanner Software, and am still having issues. I'm not sure what to try next--I'm not sure if its a software thing or a virus. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,

I have recently bought a barbones kit from TigerDirect and got it all hooked up and running. Worked great for 2days then before I went to work today as I was logged into World Of Warcraft the screen went full orange then black. Computer stayed on just black screen and no response from the keyboard and mouse. So I decide ok its not going to come back on turn it off. Turn it back on fans kick on everything sounds like its going to get back up and going but.... Screen just stays black nothing is going to it. So I call up my buddy who knows a few things about computers and he says to go ahead and switch the ram around. I switch it around to vaious spots doesn't work. He says ok take the video card out and try another or use onboard video. The motherboard I have has an onboard so I take out the video card and try the onboard same thing nothing on the screen. By this time im running out of time before work so he says to unplug the unplug the power and the atx plugs in the mobo and let it sit while im at work. 4hours pass I come back home plug it all back in try again fail. So I think ok well lets see if this ram really does work throw it into my second computer here and it loads up just fine. So as I see it right now it is not the ram. so we are down to it either being the CPU, MOBO, Video Card or Power supply. I am in the process right now of taking the cmos out and from what I have read from my Mobo Manual I have it set to reset the cmos right now as well.

I will be surfing the web or playing a game when my computer just goes to a black screen like it is not communicating with my monitor anymore. I have tried a diffrent video card, diffrent monitor and diffrent cord and still get the same problem.

It appears that it does not shut off as my hard drive is still spinning and one time when it was at the blackscreen I heard a sound of my router conenction being dropped and re-established.

I am thinking it might be the ram as one time when I couldn't get it to boot back up after doing this I removed and re-seated the ram and it was fine. I am not sure though as it is pretty new ram so I thought I'd run my log here first.

Any help will be much appreciated.

The computer that I have, had an operating system, motherboard and restore CDs that were innerconnected and then I changed the motherboard and the restore CDs stopped working. I then bought a new version of XP. This Version was professional and the old version was home edition. I got another old computer and tried to get age of empires 2 to run with a lan with the first computer described. I then concluded that microsoft wont allow different versions of windows to inner connect on a lan caming connection. I then decided to put the old motherboard back in the computer so the restore CD's should work again, and I then installed the other version of windows on the other old computer. I deleted the hard-drive of the motherboard first computer, and then reinstalled the installation CDs, because it failed to boot the first time before the hard-drive deletion. It is still failing to boot, and I am trying to delete the hard-drive again, incase I deleted the other one; (Because there was some swapping and some master/slave slot determining that had been forgotten by me.) Now when I say it doesn't boot, what I mean is, it shows the screen that states my graphic card, then scans for hard-drive, then it says "Found" or whatever it says, and then when it tries to load up window, it freezes at a black screen.

I hope you find the problem before I pull my hair out.

Could be overheating or could be a power supply issue. Hopefully, you bought a QUALITY brand power supply to power that "hungry" GTX 1080.

Hiya to all who read this. My mom's computer screen will suddenly turn black. You can't do anything to bring it back except manual shut down. My Q is....monitor or video card? I believe I have my old video card that came with my computer that I could swap out to check, and I could always take over my monitor to check that also. Would there be anything else that may cause such a thing? Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Both good ideas.

Try swapping the monitor first, since you don't have to do as much work.

If you still have the problem, then swapping video cards would make sense.
