frozen touchpad

Q: frozen touchpad

My laptop touchpad has been freezing up periodically, seemingly triggered by my use of the scrolling portion of the pad, though using that portion of the pad does not always result in my touchpad freezing up.

Prior to this issue, I had run ComboFix and logged onto the forums to post my log (post located here)--other than that, I haven't been doing anything unusual with my laptop recently.

Any helpful suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi bobbies -
How often is this problem occuring (regular / daily / weekly / once or twice) and have you used a mouse at all to see if this helps.
I find that even on my 12 month old Win7 Toshiba that a mouse cured these problems.

A laptop with XP ?? 8+ years old may have worn sensors or a build up of dust etc under the touchpad at times -

Try to clean under the pad (very carefully) or try a mouse and see if there is any change -

Thank You -

A few weeks a go a bought a new LG netbook. Tonight I turned it on and the cursor is just stuck there in the middle of the screen.

I don't use a mouse, just the touchpad, so I can't even attempt to do anything. Everything else seems to be working fine in the background upon boot up and on the desktop, but the cursor won't budge.

Tried to open control panel but obviously can't do that with the cursor stuck. Any options the DON'T involve me having to buy a new USB mouse?

How can I fix this?

Thanks.

A:My netbook touchpad is frozen. Can't do anything! Now what?

You can go into device manager, delete the touchpad and restart the system and see if that clears it up but it sounds like a hardware issue with either a loose ribbon cable to the touchpad or its just burned out (it happens).

If the netbook is new though perhaps its still under warranty and you can get an RMA for it from the manufacturer?

A:TouchPad cursor frozen

Hp laptops have a small pinhole in one corner of the touchpad. It is actually a toggle that, when double tapped, turns on or turns off the touchpad. I believe it possible your Toshiba may have the same touchpad which may be the source of your problem. Double or single tap the toggle and you may unfreeze it.

I can't use my touchpad. My arrow/cursor is frozen in the middle of the screen.

1) I can still use external mouse

2) I saw in similar post somebody suggested using memory tool scan from microsoft. I did find that but when I clicked on it the owner was not microsoft but some other name. I am tired of downloding stuff on my computer and find out later that they are spyware etc..

3) I purchased Norton 360 which does not help

4) I ran system restore, did not help. First when I ran system restore it gave me error message "unspecified error during system restore" I ran it in safemode and now I could restore. Then I had to do the updates again. Rebooted toshiba laptop agai and the cursor still frozen.

Could you please help? What help could I use from Microsoft Help ? Most diagnostic stuff I downloaded so far wants me to buy their product? What shall I do?

Norton and vista usually dont go well together. I would use Avast or AVG antivirus, they are free.

Have you tried finding drivers for the touchpad? You could try to install new drivers or just reinstall current ones. Also have you tried turning the touchpad off and then on again? Is the touchpad on?

Just a thought

Hello,
My wife's Dell Insprion 1200 (laptop) has a frozen touchpad pointer. I know this isn't the most desirable computer but she only uses for e-bay and e-mails. It was in the shop a couple of weeks ago to have the AC plug in the back of the computer changed. It seemed to work fine for a couple of days before the pointer froze. I've turned it off and unplugged the battery and AC cord, reinstalled both and turned on, pointer still frozen. I tried Fn + F9; still didn't work. I also tried system restore to a month ago, and it still doesn't work. Can anyone help me? Thanks

Hi,

Windows XP Pro.

At the office I use an external mouse on my computer.

At the end of the day I (usually) unplug the mouse before going into standby mode.

When I forget to disconnect mouse before going into standby mode...when I get home and resume my touchpad ends up being frozen and won't work.(Note: Built-in notebook keyboard does work however).

When this happens the only way I know how to correct the problem is to restart the computer.

Is there some magic or alternative way to unfreeze my mouse without having to restart the computer?

Thanks.

Extremely frustrated I've looked and tried to find a solution to no avail. When the notebook boots up, it gets to the login screen, I wouldn't be able to do anything at that point but I can log in because I have a fingerprint scanner, from there I'm 100% dead in the water. The only way to shut down is to hold down the power button. While the computer is in bootup, I have touchpad/keyboard function, I can escape to boot options, BIOS, repair, etc. and have normal functionality while there but not in safe mode. I have ran SFC with commands several times, chkdsk with commands several times, nothing changes. SFC says it found problems but was not able to fix all of them and the last chkdsk found nothing wrong.

Here are the events leading up to:

If you have (and should have) a USB keyboard and mouse connect them and see if they will work.
Since your file system was already corrupted you cloned the bad files to the new drive.
If the USB devices work you should do a Repair Install.
If that doesn't work do this: Using System Recovery, Factory Reset and Minimized Image Recovery Options HP Pavilion dv6-3225dx Entertainment Notebook PC | HP? Support
From this tut:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

   Information
On newer models HP Recovery may offer a Minimized OS Recovery option when booting from F11, which retains only the OS, Recovery Manager, HP Support Asst, and HP Wireless LAN. This is as close to a clean reinstall as you can get without doing one yourself.
● If you clean reinstall only to C and leave all other partitions intact, F11 Recovery key should still work later if you need it.
● You can also Extract HP 3rd Party Software from RecovCD.
● Problems with volume control lighting and HP Quick Launch buttons have been dealt with here where you can also get further support.

- in windows, press Fn+F7 (or the combination you have to activate/deactivate touchpad
- In the bios (press F2 when it appears the ACER screen when booting), be sure that the Tpad is enabled.
Purchase a usb mouse and keyboard and by pass the problem.
Restore to an earlier date to make sure the configuration wasn't dumped somewhere along the line.
Reformat the system.
Check with Acer Site under troubleshooting to see if there are any other solutions.
Last resort and if your capable open casing to check for loose connections. ( It does appear Acer has problems with touchpads frequently)
Luck to you and this is about all the thoughts I came up with right now. Let us know...Jazz

My computer doesnt load up, doesnt progress any further than the Gigabyte utilities splash screen. I cannot open the CD drive, and pressing the keys on my keyboard does nothing. However, if I press the caps lock before turning my computer on, THEN the green light on the caps lock appears. Pressing the hotkeys, such as TAB for access to the BIOS, or F12 for utility program does nothing.

To give some background, I had been playing a game and had a tv show from the internet running in the background.

My system was running slow, and then seemed to have totally frozen. I waited 5 mins for it to resolve itself. It didn't. I tried task manager, and Ctl+Alt+Del to no avail.

I then, in desperation turned the power off at the mains.

PPS: I have left the computer for approx 4 hours to see if it was just running slowly. Sadly, no such luck.

Since then, I cannot even access Windows or anything.

Please help!

PS: This is a desktop computer I am referring to.

A:Computer is frozen when loading Windows, frozen at the Gigabyte Utilities screen

Quote:

This signifies a hardware problem. When you power up the computer can you press the eject button for the CD drive? Does the tray open? Does the light on the CD drive light or blink? on the Gigabyte screen can you enter Setup (Bios) usually by pressing the Del key?
If not, then shut down the computer and unplug all drives (CD/DVD, HDD's, Floppy etc) and start the computer. Can you get into the Bios? If not, then you may have a failing Power Supply Unit. Try testing with another.

I'm running W2K on an

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512MB memory
gForce3 gfx card
200GB Seagate Ultra
Soundblaster Audigy

I just ran into a problem that I've not encountered before with any of my systems.

After a couple of hours of inactivity on my system, the system froze completely. I had to reset it because I couldn't reboot via the normal graceful ways. Anyway, when I did this, I heard a series of 2 short beeps followed by another series of maybe 8 regular beeps and I had no display. The funny thing is when I went to start it up again the next day, it came up, but the clock was wrong and after being able to type only a few characters, it froze up again. I might mention that although the frozen cursor problem happened intermittently initially, the problem got worse when I downloaded the recommended nVidia driver patch (Version: 61.77)...now I can't keep the system up long enough to test anything.

That's pretty much it...Oh, I looked in the documentation re: the beeps (to attempt to decipher them) and there's nothing...not in the book, nor on the mainboard CD.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues.  I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger.  It's a quick way to get things done.  Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.
However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen.  Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu.  Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models.  Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.
I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad.  Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.
Is this a known issue to Dell?  It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well.  I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that has issues. Sometimes the touchpad works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed when it doesn't work, the icon in the tray has disappeared or never booted up to begin with. Sometimes it boots up and sometimes it just doesn't even boot up to the tray at all. And at other times, it does.
(Along with this, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've been working on this for days and days but when the touchpad doesn't work, the keyboard acts up too!) This might have nothing to do with it at all.

I've done a complete reformat of the hard drive, installed Win XP Professional, reinstalled drivers over and over. Been to the Dell website and have all the newest drivers.
When I reinstall the touchpad drivers, it does work once again, but this seems to be short lived.
The laptop is 4 years old...seems strong otherwise, can handle multiple tasks fairly well, has a dual core installed.
I can't figure it out.
Can anyone help?

Thank you!!
Pam

Haven't updated your laptop's trackpad driver lately? Then you may well want to consider doing so, at least if your laptop is equipped with a Synaptics trackpad. As a user on the Hardware Zone forums discovered, the latest Synaptics driver seems to enable multitouch gestures on older laptops that didn't previously support them, including two-finger scrolling, and three-finger click. What's more, while the drivers themselves come from HP, they should work just fine on other laptops with a Synaptics trackpad. Hit up the link below to try it out for yourself.

Hello, I tried to upgrade to windows 8 and found that the touchpad became super sensitive and jumpy. Reading online I found a firmware that claimed to fix the issue and found it on HPs Support site. Mid install, it reported that it failed and forced a reboot on the laptop. When it was back up and running I found that the touchpad no longer worked. Its exactly the same issue as in these links: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Touchpad-Not-Working-After-Faile... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Touchpad-Firmware-Failed/td-p/23... I've tried to reflash and to get new drivers but they are not able to go through. The drivers install but don't fix anything. The flashing will quit saying I need drivers first even though I have them.  I've even reformated and put the factory windows 7 image back on but it still will not work. The solutions posted in the above links didnt work for me.  Does anyone have any idea on how I can fix this?

We just got a Dell XPS-15z, and, we have questions about scrolling on the Cypress touchpad using the Cypress drivers.

When scrolling down (either one finger or 2 fingers), when you hit the bottom of the touchpad, is there any way for the scrolling to continue without your having to lift your finger(s) back to the top of the touchpad? On other Dell laptops, I have Chiral motion, or the scrolling continues so long as your finger is at the bottom of the touchpad? I tried enabling the "Continued Motion" option just in case that was what did it, but that did not seem to work.

Which brings up another question re what "Continued Motion" does.

Also, is there any manual/help document for this driver either on the internet, or in the software itself?

I looked on the forum and on the internet, and couldn't find any answers.

TIA.

Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

I close my lid and open it back up and it works normal, but then after a little bit it starts doing it again. My driver is up to date, I think it maybe Synaptics? If I need to give more info, please say!

#2: When I scroll on my touchpad up words it opens the start menu every so often when I am scrolling a lot, but when I didn't even open or even get near it or press Windows key. What is causing this? I hate it when it does this and screws up my readings then it stops scrolling and focuses more on the start menu then I have to click out of the menu and go back to what ever I was doing.

Thanks!

So if you thought your new shiny Yoga had a bad touchpad, it may not be the touchpad at all! My Yoga 720 15.6 was acting really strange where every so often using the touchpad wouldnt work, and trying to use the keyboard wouldnt work at all. I first thought it was a touchpad issue but realized that this is a system wide issue. Something is causing Windows to start hitching. I turned off Adaptive Brightness in Power settings and the problem has gone away! I had a hunch it was this when I noticed the adaptive brightness was doing its job of gradually changing the brightness but looked like it was lagging while it was dimming/brightening itself. Lenovo Support: Please address this problem through any channels necessary because I want Adaptive Brightness but right now I have to have it disabled in order to use Windows without any hitches.

The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

Q: Frozen!

Ok--Screen kept "freezing" wouldnt let me go anywhere--so I ran the PC Recovery (HP desktop)--It all goes along, looking like something good is happening--shows backup taking place..then I come to the screen that is the "setup" wherein THE MOUSE NO LONGER WORKS and I can't click NEXT to continue. The keyboard works--but nothing will make NEXT go--except "clicking".
HELP--I have a lot of data that I really don't need to lose.
ANYONE?? PLEASE!

Hard to know what process you've started, but my guess would be some kind of non-destructive restore where it restores your computer to factory, but retains you data. That being said, most of the time you can use the TAB button to "highlight" the next button and from there you should be able to use either ENTER or the SPACE BAR to get it to acknowledge the command.

I've been working with dai to fix a HDD problem (thread: SMARTDrive failure imminent) that appears to be resolved with a replacement drive; however, the backup that is restored to the new drive continues to run XP Pro SP1 VERY SLOWLY, i.e. a mouse click takes several minutes to respond. I've followed MicroBell's 'Read this before posting...', in which I ran:

Ad-Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

HouseCall
Virusscan
ActiveScan

and
HiJackThis

with no change in performance, and dai has suggested using jv16 PowerTools, which I ran and have almost no idea of what to do next.

Included here is the latest log from HiJackThis. I also have an ActiveScan log, which I will add to the next post:

Q: Frozen

this is what happened as far as i can recall. i installed windows xp sp2. i needed to update my video card driver (radeon 7200). i rebooted in safe mode, uninstalled the driver using driver cleaner pro, and rebooted to install updated driver. thats when the problem started. it booted to the windows screen with the progress bar then nothing. i tried to boot in safe mode and after it loaded mup.sys it froze. it so happened that i have another hard drive in my box, so i rewired and booted that one first with the other in tow. i was able to get all the way through the boot process. i have tried NUMEROUS methods to resolve this issue to no avail. i have even flashed my bios (which i thought was the answer). nothing worked. i even ran check disk on the sp2 drive. i tried to uninstall sp2, but it wont let me. if anyone has any idea how to fix this......

The problem could have been caused by driver cleaner so you may want to ask the question on their support forum : http://www.driverheaven.net/software-tools/

Have you tried last known good configuration (same menu as safe mode) ?

Is this a retail or OEM (preinstalled) version of Windows ? Do you have the XP CD ?

Hi there
I'm having real trouble with my computer.
On Saturday whilst stating up it came up with a thing telling me that it is checking the discs. It starts up ok, I get through the login page with no difficulty but hereafter its not good.
All of my desktop icons come up fine and I can move the mouse around but none of the taskbar icons come up, the clock is frozen, if I mouse over the taskbar/start menu button there is the little eggtimer on the mouse and if I click on a desktop icon to try to open it the eggtimer appears. After that I just have to restart the computer and I am currently typing this from safe mode. I have tried to do a system restore but it says that the system restore didnt sort the problem. Please help if you can.
Thanks in advance.

Did you go to the safe mode with networking? Try to scan the Computer with an Antivirus if you are at the safe mode. If you can't run an Antivirus scan then try to back up files because you might come to conclusions that you need to reformat your system. But still at the safe mode have tried to reset the set up of the mouse cursor then restart?
