Recovering individual files from a one click backup

Q: Recovering individual files from a one click backup

HI I did a one-click backup of my Yoga 3 pro machine when I did a fresh load. It worked like a charm and was convenient. I now, however, need to get some individual files from that backup but cannot find how to do so. I have checked several forums but have not come right. Please, can you offer some assistance?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After doing the initial Backup, as files change on my Computer (Updates, more new files, edit old files), how do I save - backup so the old original Backup is changed accordingly without my having to do a complete Backup every time?

In other words does Backup identify new files and just copy them instead of a complete repeat of a total new Backup?

I have played around with the backup functionality; I know how to backup a system image. What I cannot figure out is how to backup individual files; when I configure the backup and drilling down into the folders, the individual files are not shown.

In XP, I backup my Outlook .pst every day (I work from home so this is important). I had a NTBACKUP job set that would backup only the .pst file every day...no problem to set up.

When trying to configure W7 backup I can drill down to C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook but the only thing that's shown in the Outlook checkbox window is "Accounts."

The .pst is not in Accounts, it's in the root of the Outlook folder.

How can I configure the backup utility to be more granular? Thanks for the help.

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the form and in some very desperate need of help!

I backed up my computer a while ago using the Windows 7 back up feature onto a 1TB drive that I have. I then switched over to windows 8.1 and was not thinking and deleted my back up from windows 7. I have majority of the files but there are some files that I am trying to recover via "Recuva". I am trying to recover a my engagement video that I recorded, .mov file. It says that is excellent state and then I recover it, how when I recover it there is no video, the sound is all messed up, and the movie is 6 hr long. It seems that I am recovering a file that windows coded/encrypted because it was a backup file. Is there any way to recover a windows back up file that was deleted?

A:Help recovering deleted backup files

Try PhotoRec to recover the file and check whether it is error-free. I have atleast one report from a user here stating while most other recovery software did a bad job with media files with lots of fudge, PhotoRec recovered those clean. The scan may take a longtime. Do not lose your patience.

Is there a free and easy way to decompress a set of MaAfee ARBUS files?

I was going through my external HDD and came across a folder that I had forgotten about. The name suggested it was some kind of dump of an old laptop's HDD. There are five files with file names consisting of a common long alphanumeric string and ending in -0, -1, -2, -3 and -4. The combined file size is about 8GB. There is also a 38KB Index.arb file. Opening that file in wordpad shows the word ARBUS in lots of places. A Google search found explanations of what the files are and how to delete them, but I could not find any solid information on how to recover the contents.

The files are over four years old and I am pretty sure there is nothing in them that I would want to pay any money for to recover, but I am curious as to what is in them. I am using a desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. It running a McAfee Internet security package provided through AT&T. The package does not seem to include any kind data backup abilities.

The only way I know to restore the deleted files would be to do a data recovery scan using a software like Recuva which I have used to recover peoples deleted photos from a previous windows. It worked really well and recovered most of the lost files.

Here is a link to download Recuva: https://www.piriform.com/recuva

PLEASE NOTE: when performing the scan make sure you check this box that says 'Enable Deep Scan' this will take longer but in the past I was only able to recover any data using this option.

Goodluck I hope this is what you were asking for.

I have never delved into recovering deleted e-mails and am looking for a possible solution for this problem. I have seen utilities for deleting messages from Outlook or Outlook Express as individual programs targeting only specific e-mail programs. I don't know how well these work and with past experience, I have found there are a lot of programs out there that are poorly written by developer wannabees.

I don't want to throw any money down that hole.

So, I'm open for suggestions. To be clear, I am not looking for a program that will recover entire deleted e-mail mail box files or entire Outlook PST files. I am looking for a program that will help me recover individual deleted e-mails--and not just for Outlook.

Does anyone out there have any experience with these programs?

Hi. I am in the process of trying to recover files. My whole D drive (the 78,148MB - see jpg attached) says it needs to be reformatted and so all the files are gone. I download a recovery program (thanks to suggested from this forum -tks!) and it shows that the files are on my computer. Now I guess I have to have somewhere to put all the files when I recover them.

I am picturing I just need to purchase a 100MB removable hard drive. Then I will just have to plug it in via USB and then transfer using the recovery program. Kind of just like when I transfer music to my mp3 player. Obviously my level of computer knowledge is NOVICE. Is that all I will need to do?

I recently bought Star Wars the Original Radio Drama on audiobook. I want to copy/rip this into mp3 files so I can listen to them on my phone and/or mp3 player. I have windows 8.1 and using media player to rip them. However, the problem occurs when I insert the second disc and media player starts ripping the cd without changing the names of the tracks. I didn't notice this until I was on the third disc. Now I have multiple versions with the same title and haven't been able to tell them apart other than deleting them.

I'd like to do this with each disc its own titles, etc. I don't want to do this via iTunes, which every online website gives as the way to do this. I also don't want them in one large file. I'd like to find a stopping point now and then. Any help, including ink to different programs that will work, would be helpful.

Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it possible to assign individual files to a library? So far, I have only found a way to put a folder in a library and when I do that the entire file list for that folder appears in the library.

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

I will openly admit I don't have 100% of the details in this case. As far as I know, this person used the windows backup system to backup his mydocuments/mypictures to a dvd. This isn't supported by Microsoft, but apparently it didn't stop him from doing it. However, it is not possible to use the windows backup tool to restore that data. This is a known bug, which microsoft of course says is working as intended.

Tonight I got the DVD from him, hoping I could do something with it. However, neither of my computers are able to find anything to even read from on it. If I had to guess I would say the dvd is corrupted. Is there any way I would be able to recover the backup file from the dvd, so I can at least try and get SOMETHING out of it? Apparently the files are EXTREMELY important to this person, to the point of costing him his marriage.

I'm have an 160GB Intel X25-M SSD installed in my Dell Laptop running Win8 64-bit. I created a backup image on an external HDD which I would like to update and then perhaps have the need to recover to the updated image if the recently discussed problem with update KB2862772 should occure. Click here to view the TSG post discussing the problem.

My question regards whether recovering from a backup image to an SSD requires one run a secure erase on the SSD prior to doing so? In my research so far it been implied one should not only do a secure erase (GParted was recommended), but also create a partition table and create the required partitions. This all seems unnecessarily complex and I would like to hear what TSG members have to say on the subject.

Thanks to all who respond.

A:Recovering backup image to SSD

You don't need to do a secure erase, secure erase should only be done in certain situations where the drive is not performing up to par or having issues.

If you are making an image, and not a clone, then you will need to create and format a partition on the drive to store the image on. If you are cloning then no partitions are required as the clone will handle all that. But an image is the way to go for backups.

+backups for my primary hd
+tv shows

+personal movie collection used for editting
I have found that certain files cause windows explorer to crash - be they movies, tv shows, installer files, files on backup, etc. - when highlighted and cause Dr. Watson to go bonkers. There seems to be no connection: files with similar sources, extensions, sizes, use dates, names, pathnames, etc. seem to work fine. In all there are just over 20,000 files, of which maybe 30 cause this problem. It is possible in transfers they were just simply improperly transferred (causing pieces of the file to be lost forever), but there is a file I KNOW that happened to and Dr. Watson never went bonkers and Explorer never crashed when I selected it; it was an .avi of "Beetlejuice" whose transfer was terminated before completion, and all it does when selected is simply not play in WMP. A:CD shows data, but not individual picture files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Photographers own the rights to print the pictures .. And usually don't give you the readable Images that the camera took.
They probably have proprietary software to read the pictures ..
The discs you can't read are probably what you'd take to get them printed.
The images you can see .. Are low resolution copies that probably won't make good prints ..For previews only.

They don't want you to print them yourself or have anyone else do it ..They want to charge you.
What's the extension (file type) of the data files in the Disc that you can't view ???

Is there a faster way to password-protect folders than the ones I already know, such as AxCrypt or putting in a zip with 7Zip? I have a lot of huge files and it would take too long.

I do NOT need powerful encryption for these particular files. No hacker is ever going to get them; it's only to keep out my roommates who use my account on my computer. For various reasons setting up separate accounts is not an option.

I"m wondering if there's some way that's not as secure as AxCrypt because that's overkill for me but would still add a password and do it quicker.

A:Faster way to password-protect individual files/folders

I have installed software that can encrypt/ decrypt individual files/ folders or multiple files/ folders. It's pretty easy to use via drag/ drop folders/ files that you want to encrypt (accepts multiples) or select via right click context menu.

Right click a file/ folder to encrypt/ decryptDrag 'n' Drop multiples to encrypt/ decryptEncryted files have .pcr extensionIf you use the main program window to decrypt files or multiple files it totally and permanently removes encryption and restores the default file extension.

If you decrypt via click and open - you are asked for a password to open the file and it remains encrypted when you close the file.

I also found a Vista compatibility listing ( find.pcworld.com/56584 ) in PC World magazine relating to a patch that will allow the running of older software and games within Vista. Do you have any experience or tales relating to this? My Mom has a number of older Mah-jong games.

Thank you!

I'm using Windows Home Premium x64, and I want to delete a single file from a backup created by system protection. When I open a restore point, It takes me to an address like "\\localhost\C$\@GMT-2012.03.14-xx.xx.xx" I can see and open all of the files on that folder, such as like play videos from it, but I cannot delete anything from it. When I try to access the folder through disk management, access is denied. how do I go about deleting individual files from the backups?

A:How do I delete individual files created by system protection?

Hello Bhootnat, and welcome to Seven Forums.

A restore point is different than a backup. You will not be able to delete a specific file included in a restore point. Any attempt to mess with a restore point like that would most likely end with the restore point no longer able to be selected to be used when doing a system restore.

Instead, you could only delete specific restore points if you like.

Please save my marriage.

We got a nasty virus on our home computer which has all of my and my wife's emails and contacts on it. After having no success getting rid of the virus and since I knew I had a good back up (Windows Backup) I decided to get rid of the old Vista 64 and rebuild my machine at Windows 7.

I was able to recover everything except my Thunderbird email accounts.

I have tried deleting the new profiles and pasting the old profiles in there place to no avail.

System was backed up using Windows backup (Vista 64 home premium)
Rebuilt at Windows 7

I've been getting ready for a disk replacement after 7 1/2 years but the disks arrived too late to avoid anything problematic.

My external HDD gave a cylindrical error while reading some data in a program so I knew this was going to be the end of it. I tried to avoid running chkdsk and suffer so I had time to backup but my harddrives won't come in the mail until tomorrow. I tried to navigate to the directory that gave the cylindrical error and half the files couldn't be found, as expected, going back the entire file tree containing couldn't be found either so I tried running chkdsk anyway and just go with it but it couldn't "load a RAW partition", so the boot sector of the drive failed, without thinking I shut off the drive and turned it back on.
Big mistake because now nothing loads at all.

I tried chkdsk /R, which did not work.

I downloaded testdisk and I'm running an analysis right now, its working, but extremely slowly (has been running for more then a day and is at 1%) and often gets stuck on a cylinder for several minutes to half an hour often resulting in a read error.

I have EasUS Partition Manager Pro 10.5 and HDD Regenerator as well if this does not help.

I'm not really familiar with testdisk, I never used it before, I did read the "manual" but that's only describes one scenario, mine already differs from whats on the site so I could use some help in how to fix this so I can access my data, copy and paste everything to the new HDD... Read more

Ok, I was having some ram issues, which I traced back to my 512mb stick (I had a 1024 and a 512, they didnt get along) Afer removing the 512 stick, I rebooted the computer. Everytime it boots up I get the message "Windows had to recover the registry from a log or back up file, the recovery was successful"

How did pulling a stick of ram manage to cause this, and what can I do about it?

A:windows recovering registry from backup on every boot

This is XP?
What happens if you log in to safe mode with user name administrator (if you did not password protect this account leave password blank) and then restart?
What happens if you boot to that profile and create a new profile (user account ) with admin priveleges and boot to it , shut down and restart?

What happens if you choose "last known good" from the list of options when you try to boot to safe mode.

Unlike win98, XP does not have a permanent registry . The XP registry is created as it boots from data stored in multiple files called hives (.hiv) which load at different times during the boot process.
Since the hiv files are saved each time windows shuts down (windows is now saving your settings) then your problem either indicates that the current hiv for your profile is corrupted and even when it restores the backup copy, when you use your profile some virus or something is again corrupting it; or it indicates that your computer is shutting down before these files get written from RAM to hard drive.
Check your hard drive settings, disable write behind caching. (Device manager, choose the drive, properties/ policies)

My question is similar. I'm new to Win7-64. I want to back up the entire system but will System Image Restore allow me to identify and restore individual files? Win7's normal back up function does that, but it doesn't save the OS and programs.

A:System Image Recovery allow me to identify & restore individual files?

Hello Mark, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but when doing a System Image Recovery, you will not be able to pick and choose individual files and folders. It's an all or none deal.

However, you could use the tutorial below to manaully extract individual files and folders from within the system image if you like.System Image - Extract Files Using Disk Management

My bookmarks are a huge mess. When I used IE, I would go to the folder on the drive to organize them. Now that I use Firefox, I can't do that. I would like to find a program that gives me ease of organizing and will export the bookmarks as individual files, instead of one.

I'm interested in this: http://bkm.sourceforge.net/en/vbbkm.html but it's old and dead I think. Also I don't think it worked with Firefox.

I'm not interested in online managers and I don't have a real need for portability. I just want to sort and burn the folder.

My Z210 came with stripped RAID-0 array which is currently made up of 2x 1TB HDD where the OS partition lives. I want to change this to mirrored RAID-1 but since the IRST application does not allow RAID level migration of this type, I thought I?d try another approach.
As a solution, I'd make a backup, using the Windows Backup and Restore application. Then I'd change the array using the iRST Boot ROM before recovering the backup to this new array. But obviously a 1.9TB backup into a 932GB array does not go
So, in preparation for making a backup, I first disabled "System protection" and the "Page file". Doing this allowed me to shrink the OS partition to around 50GB using Disk Management. Then I re-enable "System protection" and the "Page file" before making the backup and creating a System Recovery Disk. This resulted in a 35GB backup which I stored on an external USB drive. And now a 35GB backup can fit on my reconfigured 932GB RAID-1 mirror
As such, I cold booted my system and during the start process I pressed CTRL-I to get into the Intel RAID Boot ROM. Mind you, CTRL-I only worked if I cold booted and directly plugged the HP USB keyboard into the first USB slot on the rear of the system. The first USB slot is at the upper left when looking at the rear with the tower upright. Plugging the HP USB keyboard into any other USB port or into the hub of my Dell monitor didn't allow me to access the Intel RAID Boot ROM!
HP should really investigate this fau... Read more

My symptoms are these:
right click hangs on all files but not folders for about 30-40 seconds then works fine for a few moments but once I click away or do anything else the problem comes back
using the keyboard to copy hangs and then once the computer "unfreezes" copy/paste with keyboard works fine
double clicking on a file that would launch a program hangs for a while then opens the program.
using the delete key hangs
Otherwise performance is normal everything runs fine while using all programs.

What I have tried so far:
Running Adaware and AVG to determine if spyware/malware installed
using shellview to disable processes - no results
cleaned temp files and defragmented drives
uninstalled hp easy button keyboard software

Problem does not occur in safe mode.

A:Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

Backup doesn't usually back up a program's files. Since Programs need to be "Installed", it makes no sense to simply back up the program's "program files" folder if no User data is stored in such folders. Since that folder would be fully rebuilt upon it's reinstallation, why does a backup need to be made of it?
I tested this also, and while a backup file was created, the zip folder was empty as was yours.
But again, backing up such a folder makes no sense and is a waste of space in the backup file, so it only makes sense that certain file types are excluded from being backed up.

Hello all,
I am fairly new to macros and am looking to split a large word document into smaller files based on a text string within the document, and then save those files as individual word documents, or as a bonus, PDF documents. The text string is "HEADER DATA".

Basically, I want the macro to find the text string "HEADER DATA", then select that page and all pages up to but not including the next instance of "HEADER DATA", then cut those pages from the original document, create a new document with the same formatting/ page layout, and save that document with a new file name. I want the process repeated until the end of the document, and each file saved with a new file name.

Some attributes about the file:

The text string "HEADER DATA" is always in the same location on a page, but is not at the top of the page.
The format and layout of the new document must match the current document.

Here is something I came up with (don't laugh too hard, lol). This will extract the first pages as intended, and saves the new file, but then Word stops responding. I don't quite know what the error is. Thank you in advance for any help.
