Thinkpad L480 Fingerprint not working

Q: Thinkpad L480 Fingerprint not working

Hi! I have recently purchased a Thinkpad L480 and the fingerprint reader only worked very breefly after setup. Now, whenever I try to setup my fingerprint in windows hello the device seems as it would recognize a fingerprint without a finger on the reader (reader is clean). The fingerprint setup assistant shows a short flashing of the fingerprint icon as it would recognize a finger and then continues with only painting the innermost line of the fingerprint red and stops to detect any input. As mentioned breefly after windows setup the fingerpringt scanner worked. After a relog the scanner stopped working. I tried deleting and setting up a new fingerprint, when the problem first occured. All drivers are up to date. The latest windows version is used. Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen). The fingerprint sensor is not working and I don't have the option to sign in with my fingerprint. I bought the laptop around a year ago and the fingerprint sensor worked fine for the first few months, but stopped working recently.  Here are the symptoms:When setting up sign-in options, there is no fingerpring option in Windows HelloIn the device manager, there is no entry for "biometric sensor" or anything similarIn the bios, when I selected "reset fingerprint data", I get the response "no fingerprint reader is attached"I have tried a full re-install of Windows 10 and it did not change anything. Is anyone else having similar issues? Is this something I can fix through software or would I have to send it in for servicing? Thank!

You're not alone, and unfortunately it's been identified as a hardware issue. The BIOS message that you got is actually being used as a confirmation that the problem is hardware, not software. See this thread.

Hi all, I have a Thinkpad  X1 Yoga 3rd Gen. WIndows Hello works fine with the camera, but I do not see any settings in the Windows Hello Settings app for configuring the Fingerprint reader. The device has a fingerprint reader. I am sure the fngerprint reader worked fine when I purchased the device. I performed a full device reset as I was having issues with battery performance (now cured), but the fingerprint option is still not available. Any thoughts?

The fingerprint sensor seems to have disappeared off my Thinkpad P51. I've tried to update drivers but when going into the device manager, there is not even a section for biometric devices where the fingerprint sensor would normally be. I checked under all other subcategories and none had anything that looked like a fingerprint sensor. Going into windows settings, under fingerprint sensor the message "We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with windows hello fingerprint" appears. I then checked BIOS and under fingerprint security settings, BIOS also does not see any fingerprint hardware installed on the device. Any suggestions? There has been no physical damage to the computer and no other indication as to why the hardware would stop working. Since it last worked, the light above the fingerprint scanner has not come on once either.

I had an X 1 carbon 3rd gen that was a Lemon to say the least  i had sent it back numerous times to get repaired and after the third time Lenovo was gracious enough to send me a X1 5th gen. It has worked very well for me up until the past week. Ive noticed that the laptop itself has been running verry hot. Hot to the point where it made me jump when i rested it on my bare leg. In addition the fingerprint reader intermitantly works  i have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers  i have run hardware scans i have tried everything and of CORSE my warantee is expired!  i have no issue buying an extension but at this point i am very frustrated with how this laptop is turning out. i LOVE this laptop more then anything but i am extremely frustrated. has anyone else encountered issues with overheating and fingerprint reader??  any advice??

The FP reader does not work on my T450s under Windows 10, even though the drivers "Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017)" are installed correctly.I can get into the Windows Hello Fingerprint Setup (snapshot below) but the FP reader doesn't do a thing.Following the steps suggested in Fingerprint-support-on-Windows-10-ThinkPad-T440-and-newer does not change anything. The notebook is brandnew and I didn't have Win 7 or 8 on it before for testing the FP reader, but the driver installed without any issues -- so I guess it's not a hardware problem. I'm happy for any suggestion.

Not sure if there is an official solution but heres my issue: After upgrading to Windows 1803, my fingerprint reader just stopped working with Windows Hello. Tried troubleshooting with drivers and eventually did a hard reset which did address the issue...only temporarily. I already looked into other forum post regarding deleting and reinstalling the fingerprint drivers as well as the Intel SGX drivers as well but those didn't seem to solve the issue. Any insight on the issue would be great!

HiI recently applied the Windows 10 April update to my x270. Everything worked okay however Windows Hello and the fingerprint reader no longer work. I have checked the Biometric settings in device manager and the Synaptics WBDI (SGX enabled) device is showing the following status"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful". I have checked everything is enabled in the Bios and also uninstalled and resinstalled the device from Lenovo. Has anyone else experienced this issue. Is it a driver incompatability with updated windows 10?Is there an updated driver somewhere please? Thanks in advance

Hey,I've recently installed windows 7 on my t530 because in win10 I couldn't use fingerprint reader cz there's no suitable driver available. So back on windows 7 I installed all the latest drivers from lenovo support site. Fingerprint Reader works perfectly! Now I got like 180 Updates installed. After reboot my fingerprint reader didn't work anymore. I can open the fingerprint tool but the green led is not glowing anymore.in device manager everything is ok. latest driver installed, detected as biometric device.  also it's listed in system settings.I checked my BIOS settings and clicked on "reset fingerprint data" and also disabled the device and enabled it back.nothing seems to work.. is there any solution? Maybe windows blocked the driver or something i don't know. I've deinstalled the fingerprint software AND the driver in device manager. reboot, and installed all again. nothing.. how can this be?

The fingerprint reader on my ThinkPad L380 suddendly stopped working. I tryed resetting the saved prints in Windows Hello but when trying to register them again the procedure stops at the second step: for the first step of the registration when I touch the sensor it is recognised, but for the second step when I touch it nothing happens. The driver is updated and the system does not register any problem. Is it possible that the fingerprint reader is physically broken?

A:Fingerprint reader stopped working (ThinkPad L380)

The circuitry might have failed.  I would first try to reset everything:

1) Turn off fingerprint option in windows hello
2) Boot into BIOS and erase fingerprints (under security menu)
3) Uninstall the fingerprint reader under the device manager
4)  Reboot and let it find new hardware

You would then need to re-register the fingerprints

If that doesn't work, I would assume a hardware problem

Hello Is it possible to watch movies on L480 (i7-8550U with UHD 620 graphics) in HDR mode (the monitor I have is HDR capable)? Is it possible through HDMI port (which is ver. 1.4 if I'm right) or only through USB-C port?  I didin't managed to get my Thinkpad to recognise the monitor as HDR capable, probably because the HDMI port is 1.4 and not 2.0. Am I right? Would it work if I connect it with monitor with USB-C to HDMI cable? I tried a few versions of driver (including the latest one) for graphics. Thx.

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.

I am the IT-Manager at our office and I have two Lenovo ThinkPad L480 which both have worked fine for a few months. Yesterday one of the machines got no video with a flickering mouse cursor. I had to hard reboot the computer to get video again, but after the Lenovo logo the screen went black. So I did a systemrestore via the F11 menu and everything worked fine for a few minutes before the issue was back, so I had to do a new systemrestore and when everything worked again I set up the machine to accept remote desktop connections so that I could troubleshoot the mahine even when the issue were back. What I noticed was that when the system got a new graphicsdriver for the built in HD620 chip, the control panel for Intel HD graphics stopped recognizing any monitor including the built in one, so the dropdown menu in the control panel for Intel HD graphics where you usually can chose a monitor or at least see the current one, was completely blank. But as long as the computer used driver version: 23.20.16.4973 (2018-02-28) everything worked as it should, if I got a newer driver the no video issue were back and when checking the event viewer I always found 3 entries stating the following:  igfxcuiservice2.0.0.0 cannot be found So I had to rollback the GPU driver to the version mentioned above and I turned off all of the automatic updates for drivers to hopefully prevent the problem from happening again. Then today I got the exact same issue with the secon... Well it sounds like you need to find out who is pushing the bad video driver, because if it is not Windows Update, Lenovo Vantage or Thinkvantage System Update etc, then some other process must be doing so. I assume you are uninstalling the bad driver via Device Manager, and checking the box to delete the existing driver software, so if the bad driver returns, some process is in play.

Hello all, I would like to ask you, if there is any possiblity to use extended warranty for another Thinkpad, in case original Thinkpad was returned due to three times same failure of display. I have already received credit note for the L480 laptop, but of course without price for additionally purchased extended warranty.I'm asking because laptop was returned only 10 months after purchase. + It was probably one month in Service centre/Depot - couldn't use it. When I checked SN of returned Thinkpad L480, the warranty is still valid. To sum up:I'm going to purchase Thinkpad L390 and would like to know, if there is any chance that Lenovo can cancel warranty for returned deffective L480 and provide it for my new L390. Thank you! Best regards, Vladimir

I have a Thinkpad L480 bought 7 month ago, and since one month it sometimes crashes. More often after suspend, it is still on but nothing shows on screen, I can just shut it down and restart. It never is on low battery when crashing by the way.Since I have it, it shows a black screen during one or two seconds each time the power source changes. And this time, the crash happened at the time where I put it on charge: usual blackscreen but which finally didn't go... That's what makes me think the power is the source of the issue. That's pretty annoying, I searched a bit in the windows 10 (I have only windows on it, correctly updated) but didn't find anything interesting. Has anyone an idea of what it can be? Hardware or software ? Thanks in advance, Louis
