I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: External monitor not working

What colour is the led on the monitor - red or amber
Have you checked the cable to another computer -
I do not think with that message cable not connected it will get you very far, but is there anything showing in device manager when the cable is connected
OR
Click "Control Panel" and select "Personalization."
Click "Display Options." Select "Identify Monitors" to locate the external monitor. Click the drop-down menu and choose the external monitor to switch the display.

I couldn't find the answer to this. Apologies if it is already posted somewhere

I have a Dell Precision 5510.
I have it hooked up to an external monitor using dual screen
The sound from a video on youtube (etc) works fine when the external monitor is unplugged, BUT NOT WHEN THE MONITOR IS PLUGGED IN. This confuses me.  Is there a solution?
Thank you.

A:5510: Audio from websites not working when external monitor is also hooked up. (But Skype sound still working)

Hello. What might be happening is after you connect to the external display, the audio switches to HDMI audio. To get the audio to emit from the laptop's speakers again, go to the Windows Sounds dialog and make Speakers the default playback device (right click). You might have to do this every time you connect an HDMI cable.

I have the USBc to HDMI connector from Dell, to connect my XPS13 to a second LG monitor.
I have been using it without problems for 2 years. I use it every day. Same setup.
Since friday 29/12 it stopped working.
I tried to connect my laptop to different monitors. I did driver updates and even tried to roll back my Intel driver. I disabled the WIFI. (and tried putting it on airplane mode). But nothing helps.
I guess some of those latest BIOS updates, HD driver update, ... caused the problem.
Can somebody please help. It's urgent. I need my laptop+second screen for my work.

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. I have two external monitors both Asus with VGA ports. I successfully configured one of the monitors to the VGA port. However I have not been able to successfully get my 2nd external monitor connected using the HDMI port. I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the monitor but it's not working. To rule out any issue with the 2nd monitor, I was able to get it to work by disconnecting the VGA cable from the first monitor and connecting it to the 2nd monitor. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? Thanks in advance! Leslie

Hi, first post!

I have an ASUS VW246H, 24 inch external monitor connected to my two laptops, one via HDMI, and another via DVI (viewing one at a time ofcourse).
My new laptop (Dell xps 17) has had the dual display running smoothly until right now (it was running just few hours ago!) and now it doesn't work!!
I plug in the HDMI cable, the monitor detects that something is plugged in, turns black for a sec, and then just displays "HDMI No Signal".

p.s. in the past hour I did boot into my second partition (Ubuntu, Linux) which doesn't have a dual monitor setup but I by accident left the HDMI plugged in. I 'think' I have done that several times before without anything going wrong. Dont know what happened this time!

p.s.s. I have tried to go in monitor settings on windows 7, look at the NVIDIA control panel and it cant find any external monitors. I have also tried toggling Fn + F1 which is the external display switch.

A:External Monitor not working suddenly

Ok that was odd.. I plugged the laptop into a different HDMI cable, going into my tv, and it worked.
Then I brought it back to my monitor and tried to plug it into the HDMI cable, and it worked!!!!

I have a Windows 10 laptop and an external monitor. The monitor was working perfectly for a few weeks, until one day I switched on the laptop to find that the monitor was no longer working. Going to 'Display Settings' only showed one monitor, and pressing 'Detect' said 'Didn't detect another display'.

After updating all drivers, then purchasing new leads and adapters for the monitor, I still couldn't get it to work. Then I stumbled upon the 'Hardware and devices' troubleshooter which, after restarting my computer, made it work.

Less than a week later, I just restarted my machine and suddenly it's not working again. This time, the troubleshooter isn't fixing it. Every time, it just says to restart my computer to finish applying updates/drivers but restarting doesn't help.

Anyone have ideas how I can fix this?

Cheers

I have a HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook (Model No. F5C93EA#ABU) originally shipped with Windows 8.1 64 bit.About 2 months ago it was updated to Windows 10 64-bit with no great problems (update in place).Recently I observed that the external HDMI port no longer works when trying to connect to a TV. I have since tested many combinations of external monitors and cables together with other laptops and proved the problem is with this laptop, We have updated windows 10 to the latest aniversary update to attempt to fix the problem and have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Intel Gaphics Driver which is currently at version 10.18.15.4248. This the latest driver is as posted at the HP website and tends to the be the version that is also automatically installed via windows update.  I notice that actual baseline release date of 10.18.15.4248 is August last year. Intel have many later non-OEM versions but this is the latest HP OEM version. I am at a loss on how to fix the problem and have had to resort to a plugabble USB3 to HDMI adapter to provide external monitor support.

Hi - Using IBM T42 with External Monitor. When booting Win XP Home SP3, both monitors work, then laptop monitor goes blank. External monitor works fine. I have tried everything I can think of - resetting displays, changing ATI Radeon mobility 7500 driver, disconnecting external monitor, Function key combinations, booting in safe mode. Nothing works. But when the laptop boot starts, the laptop monitor works for a few minutes then shuts down. Seems like a switch is not working properly.
Any ideas as to how to solve this problem. And the laptop monitor was working fine until a few days ago, the last time I used it alone, i.e., separate from the external monitor.

Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

Yesterday my new laptop arrived, Windows 7 (64-Bit) pre-installed, I've downloaded all the updates; there are no other issues with this computer.

The only problem I'm having has to do with the external monitor; it's a IBM (6332) E74 monitor. Windows 7 detects and correctly names the external monitor E74, but the monitor just flashes no signal. I also located and downloaded the the IBM E74 drivers .zip file, but Windows 7 , says it is already using the latest drivers and ignores them.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Ever since updating to Windows 10, my Yoga 2 Pro (model name 20266, Mfg Date 14/08/2014) is unable to connect to an external monitor. Tried a few TVs and a projector using the micro HDMI port. I've connected other computers to each of the monitors so I know they work. I understand how to use WIndows intimately (35 year old software engineer at Google, been using WIndows 20+ years), trust me, this is not a case of me forgetting to use Windows key + P or anything like that. The mirco HDMI port itself (physically) is fine and was working great until the day I downloaded Windows 10. So unless it happened to spontaneously stop working on the exact same day i upgraded to WIndows 10, it's not a hardware issue either. The issue is that the external monitor is simply not detected, no matter my attempts to play with the display options.I have also run the Intel driver update utilty, but it refuses to update the driver because it says it's detected manufacturer drivers and tells me I should get the manufacturer drivers. Ok, so I went to the Lenovo Yoga 2 support website, the latest driver they offer on that site is 10.18.15.4240. The driver update doesn'tmake a difference. Now, if you go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, right click and selected "Update driver software..." it will download an even newer version (10.18.15.4279). Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

It's just that the screen on the p50 is just blank. To make it more complex, the touch is working fine. Just to be precise. The black screen is also during post and boot of windows so i don't believe it's a driver issue. The only thing i can think is that the display is broke but don't understand why touch works. Is there a way to reset perhaps bios to default or does anyone have a good idea before i raise a RMA?. The p50 is working still fine but just the screen. Thanks  Ivan

Hi, I have a np9770 sager laptop and about a day ago the brightness settings no longer work and external monitors I plug in no longer work either. My version of 8.1 is fully updated with windows update. Nothing as far as I know changed but here is what I have tried to fix it:

a. Running driver sweeper again in safe mode and installing drivers from the sagernotebook.com website
2. Uninstalling and scanning for hardware changes fo generic monitor in device manager

4. Updating chipset drivers from both the intel.com website and sagernotebook.com website
5. Rolling back windows to a restore point on the 12th of September, about 5 days ago
6. Creating another user account

Odd things I found:

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
This has been constant throughout the whole ordeal
2. Whenever connecting a monitor as soon as I plug it in the monitor lights up as if it were going to work and just says hdmi not connected then goes to sleep. Nothing is detected in device manager.

I've been running this Z580 for a year or so, and updated to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Both the laptop display and an external monitor (HPw1907 vga) have been working fine. The other day, the external monitor just stopped working.   I check the device manager and the Intel HD Graphics 4000 display adapter is disabled, due to a Code 43. I have tried rolling back to an earlier restore point, I've uninstalled and reinstalled several versions of the Intel graphics adapter, up through the current compatible one. The most recent display adapter driver from Intel is apparently not hardware compatible with this adapter. The funny thing, is that the driver wants to work! On booting, while the black and white Lenovo splash screen is displayed, with the little circular Windows logo circling around, I can move the cursor back and forth between monitors. As soon as the screen turns blue (I assume with Windows drivers loading) the external monitor blanks out and I'm back to one screen.  Based on that behavior, I'm wondering if it's not a display driver that is specfically the problem, since I've loaded up the latest drivers several times, but if maybe a recent Windows update has sneaked in a driver or component for something else that is causing the Intel driver to crash. Any thoughts?  Back in earlier versions of Windows, you could have the system load one component at a time during boot, so you could check for incompatibilities. So, if the... Read more

Dear all,
Wonder if you can help me solve a problem. I have just received an XPS13-9350 from the Outlet last week. It was certified refurbished.
I've tried to connect a VGA monitor to it via a USB-C to HDMI, then HDMI to VGA cable. The HDMI to VGA cable works perfectly on my Inspiron 15. The setup also works if I full power down the XPS13, attach USB-C to HDMI to VGA to monitor, and then boot up. The external monitor then works almost perfectly (with the exception of Netflix's video player which makes it flicker blue - Youtube and local video are completely fine).
What I cannot do is plug in this monitor whilst the XPS13 is on already - which is inconvenient as I move on and off desk a lot, and powering down the computer every time is unhelpful. Oddly, the monitor will also not be recognised if I simply Restart from Windows. I have to fully power down and plug everything in before switching the computer on again.
I have updated BIOS, video card and Thunderbolt drivers since and none of these has solved the problem. My system info is:
DELL XPS13-9350
Windows 10
Core i7-6560U, Intel Iris 540 graphics
8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

Hello I have been fighting issues with my external monitor not turning back on after sleep. I have it set to hybrid mode, I understand the other fix is to set it to discrete mode but my other laptop of the same type does wake up after moving the mouse in hybrid mode. I tried multiple things. 1.) Updated Intel Management Drivers and Software 2.) Updated Thunderbolt Software 3.) Used Graphic Driver Uninstaller and to no avail.  I also installed every update for Windows 10 on their web site. The other fix is to enable and disable the NVIDIA driver in the and that wakes up the HDMI port it seems, but that should not be the case, I would like it to just turn on with the flick of the mouse or button like my other laptop. Is it a failing graphic card of Nvidia or Intels end? I do notice after the monitor sleeps the NVIDIA drivers control panel settings go missing. I already uninstalled completely and reinstalled the drivers but my computer is still having this problem. Are their any suggestions on Lenovo's end or fixes? I bought this laptop from Amazon and I also joined a 3 year support service from them.

Have you compared the Power Option settings on the two laptops to see if they match as well?Do the two systems share the same monitor, and if not, how is your monitor configured, does it have an option to set the input source to HDMI vs. automatically detecting the source? When in the mode where the screen does not turn back on, what happens if you press the following key combination Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + B  (forces a reset of graphics cards) do you hear a beep and your screen wake up?     That key combination sometimes works to wake the monitors, and while not a solution, it may be a work around until you find a permanent one. Best of luck,

But when cold booting the system (BIOS is set to boot when power is turned on), the monitor on the HDMI output never shows, isn't even detected by anything. So it doesn't show up on the Intel Graphics Properties for the HD 5300 neither. In order to make it work like in my current situation (T410s, docked, power-on boots, and switches to external monitor without any user interaction), I need to either unplug the power of the dock after login, or remove the tablet from the dock and put it back. Only then does the second monitor show as alternative, resepctively is switched to.  Any help by someone who has an idea how to avoid the power_on - login - remove_tablet - insert_tablet cycle will be appreciated! Uwe

Hi!
I recently bought a DVI cable to plug my external LG monitor to my laptop to run nVidia's DualView (stretch format) across the two monitors. I'm using a beta driver (169.04 from laptopvideo2go.com), and when I enter nVidia control panel and go into the setup additional monitors tab, it only lets me choose "choose only ONE monitor". So I did that just to test that my monitor was plugged in right, and it worked. So I KNOW that my monitor is working and is being recognized by Vista. But when going into display settings byt right clicking on my desktop, it also only recognizes 1 monitor. Is it my beta display driver messing my Vista up? Or what could it be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Hi guys!

I have a Toshiba Satellite (M70) laptop and am primarily using Windows XP (SP3). I just bought a LG 24'' (L246WH) LCD monitor which I'm now trying to hook up to my laptop to use as an external monitor.

Since the laptop's graphics card (Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family) has no digital output, I connected it via VGA. I installed the drivers that came with the monitor and I set up the "extended desktop" in windows and it works, but I can only use resolutions of 1600x1200 and below.

This is a problem, since the 24'' screen is designed for 1920x1200 resolution. No matter what I try, I can never get that resolution as an option in my display settings. (I updated the drivers, reinstalled multiple times,...).

Since I was getting frustrated, I also decided to test the monitor under Ubuntu (dual boot on the same laptop), and Ubuntu displays the 1920x1200 resolution without a problem. So I'm assuming this is a software issue.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'll even take bad ideas, if you have any!

I have a 15 inch screen laptop now that I plan to replace soon. I would rather buy a smaller laptop (maybe 11 inch screen) for lugging around travelling, but at home I don't want to stare at a small screen all the time, especially working with spread sheets.

Can I just buy a good size monitor and hook into it to view when home? Any problems and hassles with this and is there a size limit on monitor?
Thanks,
G

Hi -
I set up my laptop so that when I connect my 19" flatscreen to it I can run my computer from both screens at the same time. Does anyone know how I can change this so that I can only use one screen (the external one)? I'm running windows vista fyi.

Thx.

I bought a 32" LCD Television the other day and i wanted to hook it up to my laptop's VGA port. I bought the cable and hooked it up and everything was fine. (only bad thing is the display is widescreen but the max resolution of the TV is 1024x796 which isn't widescreen) I decided to try a widescreen resolution on the TV and the TV wouldn't display it. Now i'm stuck with that setting on my laptop for the TV and when i plug it up it goes by default to only display on external monitor, and the TV won't display the resolution so it just sits there and i have to hold down the power button and reboot with TV unplugged.

I tried changing all the resolutions and hooking it up to other VGA monitors, but it knows when my TV is hooked up and always goes back to the resolution that it can't display.

The question is, how would i clear those settings out of my laptop so i can hook it up again and work.

Laptop is HP DV6000
Nvidia geforce go 7150m
4gb RAM
150GB HD
Dual Core
Vista Home Premium

I volunteer for a church school (we can't afford pro tech help so I volunteered although my knowledge is very basic) which last year or the year before that the principal bought a laptop. It's a Micro Pro A929 running XP Home. The issue I'm having is that I can't get the beast to take on an external monitor. Also I'm trying to get it to display on a TV monitor also but that didn't work so I'm checking it on a pc monitor. The only thing that happens is the XP splash screen comes on the external and once that's over it shuts off. I can't get it to display. I have my own laptop which works just fine.
Can anyone help out??
Thanks so much and may God bless,
Peter

After putzin' around for an hour or so I've found that each laptop maker has different settings and different ways to get to those settings but fortunately I was able to find the settings for both.

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

Hello!
I recently purchased an external monitor (BenQ EW2740L) for use with a PS4 console, however I thought I would try to connect it to my Laptop (ASUS N550JV - Running windows 8). I was trying to connect the two with a HDMI cable as my laptop doesn't have ports to fit the supplied D-Sub cable. Long story short, My computer detected and installed the monitor but im presented with a black screen and the monitor gives the message "No Cable connected". I've tried the Fn + F8 option of projecting to a second screen however no luck.
Also my Computer and the monitor both have a native contrast of 1920x1080 if that helps.

What am I doing wrong?

I went to msconfig and turned on safeboot with minimum startup programs. Unfortunately, I use an external monitor because my laptop screen cracked, thus the screen is not showing up on the external monitor. I cannot see a thing and I can't fix the computer to return to a normal startup. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP Home Edition OS. Is there a set of keys I can follow to blindly fix it back to normal startup? Thank you all for the help in advance.

P.S. i "/safeboot"ed to scan my computer for any known threats without thinking about my external monitor.

I am trying to get a Dell 17" LCD (non-widescreen) to work as an external monitor with my lenovo X300 laptop (widescreen). I thought this was plug and play but apparently not.

The monitor works on previous widescreen laptops so I know its not on that end. I have had this montitor working on this laptop before but have since installed a new HDD and reinstalled all OS & SW from the system recovery disks.

I am not pro at this but I have checked everything I can think of from video drivers, display adapters, different resolutions. no luck on any thing.

Any help appreciated.

A:Solved: Laptop + External Monitor: can't be this hard

Does it even pretend to try to work when you press Fn/Fx (whatever key combination IBM uses)?

Look in the Advanced properties of the video drivers. I know the Dells we use sometimes require a kick start in the drivers.
