Taskbar frozen + Itunes wont load but shows up in processes: defrag won't load either

Q: Taskbar frozen + Itunes wont load but shows up in processes: defrag won't load either

Hi all, I am new to this forum & I am hoping you will be able to help me with a few problems I'm having with my PC.

This seems to be an intermittant problem but it happens more often than not.

When I boot up the pc no matter who's login i use (mine or the wifes) when the desktop loads, the taskbar down the bottom is frozen. When i move the mouse over it there is just a hour glass.

Also certain programs won't load up like I-tunes or the defrag yet when i go into processes the itunes exe is showing.

Internet explorer seems to work ok.

I have Avira anti-virus & I am using Adaware, Spybot & spywareguard.

My system details are:
Windows XP sp:3

here is my hijack this log: Please help me & thank you in advance.

Preferred Solution: Taskbar frozen + Itunes wont load but shows up in processes: defrag won't load either

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

For some reason, when my partner's computer boots up, the Windows taskbar is frozen, sometimes for up to a couple of minutes. When it finally becomes available, the Start menu etc works fine, but the system tray does not display everything that it should (for example the volume control) even though I have set it to "always show" in Properties>Customise.

Running Windows XP SP1 on a 2.4GHz P4 processor, 1.5GB RAM.

Have tried attacking the normal culprits (Startup folder, unnecessary services etc) but thus far unsuccessfully. Not a life-threatening problem, but nonetheless I hope someone can help because it's annoying the hell out of both of us every time we go to use this particular machine!

A:Taskbar frozen on startup (long load time)

Although I havn't experienced any sort of slowness, I do get certian icons such as the volume control not appearing on the taskbar when I start mine up. I always have to open up the task manager, stop the explorer task and then restart it by typing "explorer" in new task. This makes all the icons appear.
As for the frozen taskbar, it might be a certain program or service causing it.
Hope this helps a little.

A:Computer Wont Load up frozen start up screen RAM problem

Hi sorry you seem to have a poor impression of techs lets hope we can help you and possibly change that, 2 things come to mind, the slot is bad ie damaged in some way or the ram is,when you tested the ram in the slot did you try only 1 stick, try 1 of the others in it if it works ok then it is the ram that is the problem,if not then it is the slot, you can run with 1 less stick of ram, also check that the ram all matches as this would throw up a similar problem

Hi All,

I dont know if any one will be able to help me but thought I would give it a tryn.

Here is the story.

I have a desktop and my wife has a laptop. I, not knowing much about computers, posted a thread in the network forums to get help setting up a home network for us for when she is home.

After getting the network set up everything was working fine. My wife went to bed so I done some updates on her laptop. Windows updates and driver updates.

Well she took the laptop to work with her the next day and when she went to log in..it started loading her personal settings and then got a warning saying that windows was unable to load the stored personal profile. Possible causes are insuffucent security rights or corrupt personal profile. I posted this problem in my thread n the network forum since i thought maybe it had something to do with just setting up the home network.

Got a reply that basicly said i would need to delete and create a new profile. So i thought I would use system restore and then just go through the network setup again.

This worked fine except now I can not get ITune to load. I double click on the desktop short cut and get a message saying "ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the incovience. Send error repot to microsoft or dont send."

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times and still no luck getting it to work. Have tried redownloading thinking I got a bad download. Still no luck.

Can you boot in to Safe Mode at all? If so, do you have the same issues?

I click the icons in each case and the process starts in task manager but the memory used doesn't change im guessing this suggests this means its frozen. no window appears except for word where the microsoft word loading box appears. it seems weird how only these programs are affected and there wasn't a sudden occasion that all 3 stopped working over the last day they started to not load. however recently itunes has started to load but freezes imediatly. oh and btw my computer has had no problem running these programs in the past and has done problem free for a year without problems.

So far I have tried reassigning the volume letter in disk management, changing usb port (back and front) ,new usb cables, a non surge protected power source, tweak gui,Wondershare data recovery,Recover my files(still scanning) and a few other things i've lost track off all to no avail.Previously it worked fine its relatively new and unused although i have put about 400gb of files and games on that up until yesterday i hardly ever accessed.Today i found the WD logo gone and replaced by a generic volume icon and cannot explore it(freezes up my computer page etc) although disc management and hardware devices recognise it but cannot say how much free space it has.Any suggestions welcome.Im working with xp pro os.

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.
Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"
The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"
I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."
Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.
Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0
Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."
Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"
BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files
Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal.
First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly.
After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects. someone please help

A:windows 7 refuses to load and system repair wont load

Do a hardware/software reset with your BIOS:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

After doing those steps, clear your CMOS by entering the BIOS (see your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS), going to the EXIT screen, and loading setup/optimized defaults.

Do you have more then 1 computer connected to your modem/router? If so, does this happen on them? If not, can you connect a separate one (ex: friend's laptop) to test?

Normally when you get errors like this it's best to rule out a problem at the modem/router and provider before going crazy over trying to fix a problem (that may not exist) on your PC(s).

Also just a couple of other questions:

Who is your internet provider (ISP)?
What connection type do they use (Cable/DSL/Fiber/Fixed Wireless/Mobile Wireless)?
What is the make and model of your router and modem?

Further, following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the HJT Helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. If you had posted your log here, similar rules would apply. I do maintenance on my PC often like defrag when needed , disk cleanup and virus scans and use CCleaner often

I have minimal things load on startup of my pc

Any help with this problem would be great

Try running a ping to the sites that have trouble loading to see what kind of connection times you are looking at. I would also run a tracert to those sites to see if there are any places dropping the connection.

ok this is gonna be a bit long but i want the details there. the issue pc is my old pc. it has windows 7 its an asus msn-la motherboard i cloned this drive and used it in my new pc. after a few months my new pc's drive died and i took the old drive from the issue pc(witch was not giving issues at this time) and stuck it into my new pc until my replacement drive came. when i got the replacement drive i cloned the drive again onto the replacement drive and then put the new drive in the new pc had no issues there. put the old drive back into the issue pc (this is when issues started) the pc booted up to the windows desktop loading screen fast but once it got there it sat there for like 5 min before loading into windows. once it loaded into windows it was un usable for around 10 min while it loaded background stuff. once it finally loads into windows if i try to open anything its still responding extremely slow. is there anything i could do to fix this or is this going to me a re install only situation? i did try to use a windows 7 disk to do a startup repair but it claimed i couldn't do it because i dident install from that disk.

Hello There =)

I have been having some trouble with my internet browsers =/, not only Firefox, it's also Internet Explorer!

The problem with firefox:
Firefox is showing in task manager processes, sometimes many times, but not in applications, and a browser window won't open. This happens whether or not I click on the desktop icon to open FF.

I made no changes to my configuration, it just started happening....again! It has done this in the past, and I cannot remember for the life of me what I did to fix it.

I have deleted it, reloaded it, tried many of the "fixes" in the Mozilla help forums, to no avail.

The problem with IE:
IE is doing the same thing, except a browser window will finally partially open, but it just keeps trying, with no luck, & then finally I just close it.

I'm using Windows XP, Chrome (google browser), AVG Paid Version, FF & IE. I just checked, and all of these are the updates versions!

Can you help me out please?!

I have received great help on this forum in past years - thank you for looking at this.

My daughter's computer has been running slowly for a few weeks, and in the past few days would keep freezing as windows was loading or within the first few minutes of running a program.

I was able to download spybot after a few tries of restarting, and ran spybot while in safe mode (the only place where no freezing takes place). Spybot got rid of a bunch of things.

But, the freezing problem still exists, and is now worse - I cannot get the computer to get past the first Windows XP splash screen - it freezes on loading windows. I have tried a number of times, but no good.

Computer: Dell Optiplex GX260
Running Windows XP - Service Pack 3
Always has running AV - Trend Micro PC-Cillin, updated
Use IE6

Is there any help you are able to give me, since I cannot connect that computer to the internet to download any programs, and everything right now would have to be done in Safe Mode?

Thank you for any help you can give!

Yesturday my vista was working great, and on the screen as i went to shut it down said "updating files do not shut down computer 3/3 100%" but it stayed like that for 4 hours, so i turn it off manualy once i turned it back on the next day it asked me for my password i put it in and as it was loading it was vey slow and would take 5-6 minutes for programs to load up.

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. Now with internet issue, it works in safe mode with connection, but not in my normal screen. WHY IS THIS DOING THIS?

So I recently deleted a bunch of old files (documents, pictures, .exe) from my computer. Since I've done that my computer has been loading things much slower than normal. For example browser pages load slower, pictures on facebook take longer to load up, youtube/espn videos are slower to load, loading into a game takes much longer than before. However once I'm in the actual game, the game runs fine, or once the video has begun to buffer, it buffers at the same rate it always has (as far as i can tell.) This has me believe that it's not internet related. I'm concerned I might have deleted something I should not have but I do not know what I'm looking for. I recently ran a malware scan and cleared that out, I'm not sure why this tsg sysinfo says my windows defender is disabled, I have it open as I type this and it says that it my real time protection is on. Just ran a scan on it too and no threats were detected. Desktop is 2 years old and custom built.

I see that all my AVG files are usually the last to load, and I think this is the reason my boot up is not

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to monitor EVERYTHING that is loading - as it's loading - during startup..

Reason is, something is causing a real slowdown - taking sometimes 30 seconds to load (this one particular app or process)..

I get to the desktop, the system tray starts filling up - and then - paaaaaauuuussseee....

I've tried doing a ctl + alt + del to load the Windows Task Manager, and watch the Process tab - problem is - it gets to 33 processes - hits that pause - and then after the 15 - 30 seconds whatever it is that's slowing it down finally loads and then 10 other processes load instantly... SO - I can't single out which 'thing' it is that's giving that looooooong pause..

I'm hoping there is some utility / app out there that will load at startup, and either log each process and it's load time (or timestamp) - OR - let me view on the screen things as they're loading - and the ORDER that they are loading in.. to help narrow it down.. (the standard task manager doesn't seem to always list them in order of load..)

Any suggestions??

P.S. with some 42 process loading at startup, I'm hoping to avoid having to disable all and then reenable 1 by 1... I've already tried eliminating via msconfig and startup.. so - trying this next level.. thanks..

After a clean installation with WinXP I am saddended to say that it takes 3 mins to load when it would normally take 1 minute.

For example, after power on it will take 30 seconds to load up to the desktop, on task manager, 28 processes will have been shown/loaded at this time operations do not complete such as going to My Computer - it will show the browsing image of animation. It will take a further 2 and a half minute for the rest to follow to 36, this is when normal functions can work i.e. being able to surf the internet and shutting down promptly.

Can anyone help me please?

The only difference is that I used nLite to install OS, I integrated drivers and hotfixes to "save" time by not having to go through Win Update etc.

Thanks again, clgw...

A:Long load times for processes

Make sure you have installed the latest drivers for your hardware, and check windows update again once you've installed those drivers. You could also do a regular install and install the drivers and updates afterwards to make sure you didn't slipstream the wrong hotfixes.

What antivirus, firewall and antispyware are you using ? What other programs are loaded at startup ? If you already have 36 processes running I guess you've installed a little more than just Windows.

Prevent unneeded stuff like quicktime, adobe, windows live messenger or office to load at startup. Most often you'll find the option in the program's settings (look for "run at startup" or "system tray icon"), if not then you can uncheck the corresponding item in msconfig (go to start => run => type msconfig and go to the startup tab) or move the shortcut away from start => all programs => startup. All those programs will work fine without being preloaded in the memory.

A good partition layout can also help improving the access time, but on a single drive rig there's not much you can do except make sure that the system partition is the first one on the drive (in case you have a multiboot system then the latter partitions will load slower than the first one on the drive since the access and transfer rates are faster on the outer parts of the platters).

Get used to save your downloaded files to another partition and don't put too many shortcuts on the deskto... Read more

I've read some other threads that had similar problems but none of the solutions worked for me. Whenever I try to open the 9.1.1 version of itunes, I get an error message saying iTunes stopped working. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it only says that it installed incorrecly. Error 998 if that means anything to you, although it was a different error message before I reinstalled it, so I don't think it will lead to anything helpful.

I use a Windows Vista Home Premium and I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help me fix this thing. My ipod has no way to connect to my computer and it's becoming an issue. Thanks

If it's 64 bit, have you downloaded (and installed) the 64 bit version of iTunes?

If not, you'll find that the 32 bit version of iTunes works just fine - but the 32 bit hardware detection/drivers for your iPod won't work in the 64 bit operating system.

A:my itunes won't load...

Hi seansean26,

When you un-installed iTunes and QuickTime, did you do it via add/remove only? There may be remnants left behind that are causing the issue?

First can you follow this link on the Apple site to completely remove iTunes and QuickTime. There are 3 steps to follow.

Alternatively, you can use Revo Un-installer when removing them. Use the free version at the bottom of the page.

When you reinstall both programs, disable your firewall and anti-virus, just in case they are causing the issue.

I have had itunes with an Wiondows XP 32 bit pc for many years. I now have a new pc with Window 7 64bit, i7-2600, 16 G RAM, and 1T of memory. My problem is I can not load itunes 10.6.3 into the pc. When I try, the program says it was interupted and the change did not take place. It then asks me to press finish or cancel. When I press finish, the program says thank you and gives me the4 option to store the program in G. I no longer have a G as that has been replaced by H. There is no opportunity to change the save location to H. and simply says to load the external disk, which does not exist.

When I try to uninstal the itunes programs by strting with itunes first, the pc says that ituneshelper. Resources is not a valid short name. Any suggestions on this?

A:Can't load update for itunes.

Welcome to Seven Forums, David.

It appears that you have already downloaded the 64-bit iTunes Setup Program from Apple Web Site. I think the latest version is iTunes Setup.exe. If so then unistall iTunes from the Computer that you had intalled earlier and clean the Registry of all iTunes related keys and values. After that reboot and then install the latest version afresh.

Try installing in safe mode first as there is no harm in trying but I don't think it shall install.

I've been having major problems trying to install the latest Microsoft .NET Framework updates. I've tried various solutions (that haven't yet worked) including removing and re-adding all .NET Framework software. All as per(http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ll-166890.html)
I've also done a restore recently.

However, since working on this problem - I've also noticed that my iTunes and QuickTime player won't now load either.

I get the two error messages :-
1) iTunes can not run because it has detected an error with your audio configuration.
2) Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error
Program: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

My .NET Framework issue is posted elsewhere (as per the above link) - but has anybody any solutions for my iTunes problem please?

A:iTunes & QuickTime won't load!

I had the same error a while ago, but don't know about the quicktime error as i don't use it. Very simple to solve:

Follow this guide http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304424

or i'll tell it simple here:

1) Remove quicktime using "add/remove programs"
2) From apple, get the STAND ALONE DOWNLOAD of quicktime
