Strange URL in address bar after broadband outage

Q: Strange URL in address bar after broadband outage

Night before last broadband went down for hours and helpline was back up with 2 hour delays.  After 5 hours service came back on, but when I clicked on my Google icon I got:  " www.google.com/cgi-bin/redirect.ha"  in the address bar along with the Error 404 notification.  Also the tab with the Error 404 on it had the ATT globe on the left.  I can't get rid of this particular page although I don't know much to try.  I can reach regular Google  by clicking on the icon showing the 'g' on the blue back- ground on the apps bar on the same page and I get a new tab and all goes okay from then on.
I tried deleting the address bar info and putting in the correct address from my other page and all goes well until I close that page, go back on and get the error msg again.   Related item or not, I checked my browser account activity and found 'Atom feed'.  I can't find out anything on that either.  I'm really curious about this; I use my laptop for browsing and email and that's about it.

Preferred Solution: Strange URL in address bar after broadband outage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Strange URL in address bar after broadband outage

Download Ccleaner and see if it solved your problem...

PS: just for safety sakes, i would turn off the router, and back on again...just so everything can start up normal (although this should have nothing to do with the url though...)

For starters I know next to nothing about computers, so please be really, really, really remedial with any responses and patient with me. Thanks in advance to any helpers out there!

About six weeks ago we lost out electricity for about 20 minutes. It went off suddenly, came back on suddenly... Our old desktop, running on Windows XP, was on when power went out. I turned it back on after the power returned. I tried to get online to check my email and couldn't get online. I checked the connections, things seemed fine. I check on our laptops (an old iBook G4 and a newish MacBook) and both were (and still are) able to connect (wireless connection though a Netgear router). The desktop is plugged into the router then into the modem, I believe (whatever the arrangement, it was working fine until the power outage).

Anyway after hours of frustrating internet searches trying to get things back in order, I'm at a complete loss. The IP address and subnet mask say 0.0.0.0 and the address type reads "Invalid IP Address." I tried to repair the connection. No dice. The connection itself reads "Acquiring network address."

What I've done:

* I've disabled the firewall
* I did some command prompts such as netsh winsock reset catalog and perhaps others (today is the first day i've messed with it in weeks) and rebooted the computer after them
* I did this command prompt ipconfig/all

After the ipconfig/all prompt it read:

with sky broadband (netgear router)
it works through ethernet connection, but whenever i try to connect it using the wireless network (which it can see) it accepts the ssid and code but then just constantly tries to acquire a network address.

i think it's set to automatically assign ip etc. so i cannot understand what the porblem is.

the wireless adaptor (built in) is an Atheros AR5005G

i have also tried controlling the networks via windows and the Atheros software with the same results

anyone got any ideas, for my next visit?

His phone line was cut off about 3 months ago , he is still using AOL daily.
Whats going on?
has all the , you need an active phone line propaganda all been lies?

I dont want an actual phone but I wouldnt mind broadband , is this now possible as I have a line to the house?

A:Strange Broadband - no phone connection

I think you're referring to a Dry Loop or Naked DSL

Naked DSL is DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service in which the customer is not provided with dial tone. In regular DSL, a wire is run from the telephone switch to a piece of equipment called a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) splitter. The POTS splitter separates the DSL and voice bands and then a wire carrying both services runs from the splitter to the cable head, where it continues on to the customer on outside plant. Click to expand...

A "dry loop" is also termed "Naked DSL". This is a telephone line in place for the sole purpose of providing DSL. There is no dial tone on the line so no calls can be made from it (excluding VoIP of course, but that's different).

Not all DSL providers or Telcos are offering Naked DSL yet. With the demise of line-sharing, more and more companies will be making this product availible.Click to expand...
Better ask the ISP in your area...

I've had a wireless network set up and sharing broadband access for a couple of weeks now with no problems. Both PC's were side by side, one connected directly to the Belkin combined modem/router, the other connected wirelessly.

I moved the wireless PC into another room, changed no settings or installed no new programmes and now, whenever I turn the wireless PC on, it causes the broadband connection to drop. Anyone heard of this problem or a solution? Thanks.

A:Strange problem - 2nd PC drops broadband

Well, I've managed to sort this problem out myself and will post the solution here for anyone else that has the same problem but to me it's a weird one because I just don't understand it.

I worked out that the wireless USB adapter on the 2nd PC didn't even have to be plugged in for the broadband connection to drop, I just had to turn the PC on and the light on the modem in the other room would be flashing. I figured out that the only thing different to when the PC was in the other room was the fact that it was now plugged into a scanner. So I turned the scanner off and the connection no longer dropped!

I've solved the problem but I'd be interested if anyone can tell me why this happened when the wireless USB adapter didn't even need to be plugged in for the problem to occur, so it's not like that scanner was sending a signal to the router or conflicting in any way. The scanner is near to the telephone box that's on the wall outside the house but surely that shouldn't cause any interference there?

Hi guys.
At the moment I'm trying to connect to the internet using three mobile broadband. I am on an XP system. Now the broadband worked fine for a month, and then suddenly long periods of non-connectivity. The signal strength shows as strong, five bars and yet the send and recieve stats were at 0.02 kbps, then there would be a sudden jump of activity.
I was puzzled by this and then noticed a pattern. The modem can connect via two different networks. Either 3G with the three logo above it or an HSDPA network with the three logo beneath it. Both networks show five bars but basically whenever its on HSDPA the speed is wonderful, when its on 3G I'm completely paralysed.
When first attempting to log in if it tries with 3G I get an error 619 if its HSDPA its fine.
Unfortunately the dashboard that runs the modem, part of the huawei e220 software, allows you to choose 3G as preferred or exclusive network but not HSDPA. The sporadic nature of the connection is not acceptable as it can go for hours without switching to HSDPA (the modem flicks randomly between the two networks)
I spent a long time with three tech support. I have manually uninstalled the software as it couldn't find the install log file. I ran regedit to remove the references, then reinstalled. Same problem, 3G doesnt want to know me, HSDPA lets me run.
My dad thinks its a software glitch
I don't like the idea that the problem is with a computer at threes end as I cannot control that.

So if anyone ... Read more

Yesterday, I did a scan of my network with WireShark 3.2.6  Scan was done on my hardwired Ethernet connection. I am somewhat new to advanced wireshark and I do not know everything there is to know but I am in the process of learning.
While looking at the results of a short scan I saw some unsettling IP Addresses that were appearing on my network. I do a lot of schoolwork online and I need to setup Windows 10 Professional's Firewall to block this IP Address or possibly even a range of
IP Addresses.
Problem is: When I do searches with keywords such as "Blocking an IP Address with Windows 10 firewall" I end up receiving results that are intended for businesses or results that are meant for a Windows Server.
I need an understandable solution to this potential security problem. One that I can use Microsoft tools to fix and not some 3rd party app if possible.

MS Office 365 Enterprise Edition subscription through my school

There is nothing to fix.  This is completely normal behavior.  Outlook is putting in the separator character in anticipation of the next e-mail address being typed and that separator character is a semicolon.  If there are no additional e-mail addresses it does nothing.

While that was going on McAfee Anti Virus would ask me to ALLOW or BLOCK a prgram. The program name is "7735281.EXE" and it's located in "DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS" If this is a WINDOWS program, I doubt that McAfee would be asking me this question. I've tried to remove it, by DELETING it from where it's located, but I'm DENIED by WINDOWS. Then I stopped the PROCESS and a few minutes later, it starts itself back up. Also, MALWAREBYTES comes up and tells me it has blocked an outgoing request to connect to "89.149.223.232". Not at the same time as to when I get the question to BLOCK or ALLOW the program listed.

I've got this machine here that can't get an IP address. It came to me because of suspected Viruses/Adware/Spyware but I have scanned it and nothing comes up.

When the system turns on it does all the normal things then when VET Antivirus loads it comes up and says that "A quick network test has failed", when you look at the status of the Network adapter it says that it is connected but has a self assigned IP. I have tried installing different network adapters, running the Windows File Protection, I have ran registry Mechanic, Adaware, Spybot, installed SP2 done everything that I can think of but nothing fixes this problem.

I have tried setting a manual IP address to see if I could ping something then, but still nothing.

If I go into the "Status" for the network adapter that I'm using and click "Repair" it almost instantly comes up with the error that it could not be repaired because the renewing of the IP address failed.

Any suggestions? - there is nothing wrong with the network cable, or the DHCP server it is connected to either.

Sometimes unplugging the modem from it's power source works for me. Pull the plug while the machine is shut off, and wait a few minutes. Power up the modem, wait for the status lights to come on, then power up the computer. Sometimes this works. Also try ipconfig /release<enter> ipconfig /renew<enter> at the command prompt. Sometimes that also works.

I have three computers on a wireless network using a Draytek Vigor 2800g router. Two are connected on WPA and one, a tablet, on WEP (its internal wireless adapter is WEP compatible only) - so I am forced to a mixed network.

All PC are running Windows XP with SP2.

The WEP machine as started to connect using IP address 169.254.203.81 - I had this happen on another machine, but was able to reconfgure the connection to remove it and get it connecting with a dhcp address. It just won't go away on this one. I've tried resetting the router, reconfiguring the connection, Network Magic - in fact it started to do it after I started using Network Magic (is there a relationship)...

ipconfig lists this 169...address as the Autoconfiguration IP Address...but I cannot figure out how to alter it...It should be allocating via DHCP. It does say DHCP and autoconfiguration enabled.

Any suggestions?

Hi There I hope someone can help please. I have three computers running on Virgin Broadband with a cable Modem and a Linksys router using ethernet cabling which has worked fine for the last couple of years. Yesterday Morning everything was working fine (I checked my Train was on time!) but when I came home I had no internet access.

I tried re-booting everything, computer, modem and router and finally connected my computer directly through the modem, by-passing the router, still no internet access so I called the ISP helpdesk. Tried lots of things as instructed and could get one of my sons computers up and running directly through the modem and so they told me I had a faulty network card and I would need to replace it.

However, this morning I thought I would give it one more try and it actually connected ok BUT I noticed that I had a 'strange' IP address which was 82-24-175-188 and my subnet mask 255.255.252.0 and the default gate way was 82.24.174.0 My IP address is usually in the range 192.168 XXX.100 with the other two computers being .101 and .102 on the end.

Having reconnected mine directly I then tried to connect my computer back through the router so I connect my sons' computers but my computer would not then work at all, and has not connected since even when I connected it back directly to the modem. One of my son's computers will connect directly through the modem but the other one will not connect at all. So only one out of the three will connect and this on... Read more

Disable all firewalls including any third party suites (norton/mcaffee,etc,)
If wireless, disable encryption and mac address filtering if active
Makse and models of modem and router(if in network)
If wireless, can you connect directly to the modem.?Same problem ?
If still have the problem, let's see this from the failing pc.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

However my DHCP server + default gateway is 10.0.0.1 and distributes IP addresses in the range 10.0.0.x (and subnet mask 255.255.255.0). My other Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 PCs receive correct IP addresses from my DHCP server. All PC's, inclusive
the one that gets an incorrect IP address, are on the same network.
It has worked before. I can enter a static IP address + subnet mask + default gateway (what works) but that's not the purpose of course.
Anyone can please tell me what's wrong with this one PC?
Thanks.
Guy

Hi Everyone,

I've been experiencing a weird error message in Windows 7 - when I have to enter my email address to sign up for things in various places I get a strange error message saying this is not a valid email address. This happens irrespective of which browser I use (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and across numerous websites and some applications like iTunes.

I tried typing my email adddress in Notepad, then copying into the relevant place and I was able to complete the registration without this error message, so the problem is not the email address. It's almost like Windows is doing something with the formatting of the address, that my browsers / programs don't like.

I've virus scanned the machine and actually done a complete clean install of Windows 7, but I still have this problem.

Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be???? Be very grateful for any help.

Many Thanks

F

Which email service do you use? Or is the problem occurring with multiple email providers?

I have HP6730s lap top. Until now i didn't have any problems to connect to the net anywhere, cable, adsl, wireless...I live in a new place now and I can't connect to the internet. If I go to the net cafe I get connected but not at home. The router is TP link and it's connected via LAN. There is a PC connected to this network and it works perfectly. I tried changing IP address manually, first it was obtain ip address automatically, I tried to make a connection type PPPoE but that didn't worked too..I tried switching off the router and modem and switching on again, switching off the antivirus and the firewall and still nothing...the problem remain acquiring network address, after saying that for some time it just goes the network cable has been unplugged.

thank u in front to any of those who will find the time to try solving this strange problem of mine

P.S when I'm typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar it doesn't open router set up page. The green light on the the network card on my laptop it doesn't blink when I put the cable in.

Hi

An organisation I'm in received an unsolicitied email from a media company which looks like a circular, asking the user to check out their videos etc.

The strange thing is, the email's "To" field contains a name that has not been publicly associated with the organisation - in fact, the user it is addressed to doesn't use the internet, and hasn't got an email address, and never has had one.

My question is, how would this work? Did the sender have to fill out the name manually into the "To" field? Or is there any other explanation?

The email address that received the email is hushmail.

Thanks!

I use Yahoo for e-mails. When I send an e-mail to one contact, a strange thing happens. In front of his address appears the following: judith &amp. Just that...no e-mail address.
This name does not appear if I send an e-mail to anyone else. I checked this contact and do not have those words attached.
Is it possible that judith &amp is being used to send spam through my e-mail account?
If so, how would I get rid of the name (or file)?

Hi all,I have issues getting mobile (3/4g) broadband to work with my new T470 Thinkpad. In Ubuntu, the Fibocom Adapter is only detected as a generic MBIM adapter, and although Network Manager (and it's applet) display my network provider, the connection is not established, and the system process mbim-proxy is hanging at 100% CPU. This issue has been reported here (but seems to remain unsolved ?) : https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg158286.html Did anyone get this to work?Best whishes and thanks for any hints!

If you have a model number, we could probably help. Do you know if the modem is USB or Ethernet? USB is not compatible with a broadband router, Ethernet is compatible.

A:Review of Virgin prepaid broadband and other prepaid broadband

from an amazon review

The bottom line here is that this device simply does not work at any kind of acceptable level. Don't buy it. Don't even think about buying it. It's not worth it at ANY price.

Also...the device itself gets VERY VERY HOT...then shuts down! So..while you are busy replacing the transmission on your truck (yes you have enough time waiting for page to load)...by the time it finally DOES load...yup...you're done...the device breaks the connection because it is now hot enough to cause pain if you hold it for a few seconds.

How the hell can anyone sane, make and sell this device? How did it make it out the lab?
It does not work!!!!!!!

When I called Virgin they ACTUALLY SAID THIS:

"You should try it away from any buildings or trees and don't try to use it inside a building. Try going to a park."

So...if you are actually dumb enough to buy this you can use it, apparently, in a park without any trees near a cell tower. Just wow. "

How does a power surge affect a computer? I have my computer plugged in to the surge protecter along with the printer, speakers and monitor. The surge protecter was working properly as always but my computer will not turn on. Everything else plugged in is working. Any advice to a novice? My son built the computer a couple of years ago and is going to go over it to see what damage there is. Is there any hope the motherboard is okay and the hard drive?

A:Power outage!!

Try resetting the power strip (there should be a button on it somewhere). And, moving the computer plug into another outlet.

If your computer will not turn on, it could be a number of things: power supply, motherboard, processor, etc.

You could open up the case and see if there's a funny smell to find out if something really did burn out. If no smell, then look at the motherboard, there should be a battery there. You could reset the CMOS by taking out the battery (and on some motherboards, moving a pin on the board).

To find out how to reset the CMOS, take a look somewhere on the motherboard as to ID the make and model of it.

Make sure you're grounded to prevent static damage to your computer parts.

I had a storm blow over overnight and the power went out at least once. I awoke to my computer powered on with a black screen. Unresponsive. I shut it off(waited the obligatory 15 seconds) and started it up again. Windows 8.1 began loading but when it would normally take me to the login screen, a brief blue screen of sorts came up with a ;( face and the system rebooted itself. This time it said something like "Preparing Automatic Repairs" on the windows loading screen. It did that for a while, rebooted, and took me back to that error screen. I allowed it to do this multiple times and was never able to boot into windows.
I fear there has been some hardware damage(yes I know, get a UPS... ).
I put my windows 8 DVD in and managed to get it to load from the disc. I tried a couple of the repair options(couldn't tell you which) but they just sat at the screen for a long time, seemingly doing nothing. I knew I wouldn't be able to retrieve my files most likely(but my last backup was beginning of October so not a huge loss) so I just went ahead and tried a fresh install of windows. Again it sat there seemingly doing nothing but I let it be and eventually, after many of those long waits after selecting the options I wanted, it managed to install win 8.
Win 8 loaded up fine and I began the long and excrutiating task of installing the windows updates. This too has given me problems(downloads failing, installations failing) and where I'm at now, it is in some kind of loop where it tries ... Read more

A:Power outage

I encountered a similar failure but was not induced by a power fault.  The interface chip/buffer for the SATA drive has failed and is intermittently  writing garbage.  This is a MOBO failure.  A new drive won't solve the fault but is the only way to proceed to a resolution.

Woke up today and realized that the power had went out. Went to start up the computer and it took me to the screen where I can choose to A) Start in "Safe Mode"
B) Start Normally
C) Start with last known working config

I tired all of the choices and everytime the "Windows XP loading" page came up right before it usually goes to where I can log in. Right before it would hit the "Log In" page it shows the blue screen of death for a second and then kicks me right back to the screen with the start up options. Its a cirlce I can't get out of, PLEASE HELP.

Hello people- I have a problem that I hope you can give me some guidance on.
My computer every now and then TURNS off-- and noone is pressing the power button. So I came home from work and pressed the power button and nothing happened-- so i changed the outlet the tower is plugged into and still nothing-- I then opened the tower and played with a few wires- not knowing what i am doing-- then I changed the battery in the middle of the board as well(the round battery)-- and still nothing-- So I went on the phone to call HP- and after my phone call, I pressed the power button again and the computer turned on???? WOW- the twilight zone??-- So my only question to you- is can it be the power supply??? and if it is-- would it do this type of shutdown by itself- like can the computer work even with a faulty power supply---or can it be something else-- because as we speak now-- the computer is working fine??? What do you suggest I do---
I also leave the computer on everyday and all day forever--- I never turn it off- is that something I should be doing- or should I turn it off when not in use at nights??/ Please give me some type of advice- so i know how to proceed.. My computer is the HP P6140f pavilion (i KNOW- it is quite old- about 10-11 years old)-and I am working on Windows Vista- yes Vista-- but that also is working really great- I actually love it- never a problem---so besides the age- i have given you the problem I am having--so please look into your crystal ball and l... Hi, I really hope you can help me. I have an HP dv2000 laptop (5 months old) with Vista Home Premium. I use a Belkin router connected to my ISPs DSL Gateway modem for wifi at home. It was an easy set up with out any problems UNTIL my ISP experienced an outage for my community yesterday. Since then I haven't been able to get online. I can connect to my router, which appears to be connected to the modem but the modem isn't giving me internet. I tried plugging in directly to the modem for a LAN connection and still no internet. This has to be an issue with my computer because my roommate isn't having the problem. He has an HP dv5000 and has been getting an wireless internet connection without problems since service resumed. Is it possible that my being online when the outage occurred screwed something up? Also, I've tried troubleshooting using the "diagnose connection problems" option in IE but it isn't able to help me. It says:

"Windows can not find the host name "ie.redirect.hp.com" using DNS. the doman name server may be down. Windows found a problem that can not be repaired automatically. Contact your isp or network administrator for help or click here for information about things you can try to help resolve the problem. "

I clicked on the "click here" part and the troubleshooting options provided are things I've already tried. I'm totally at a loss here. Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

A:can't connect to internet after ISP outage

I've run into this a few times and find that when the power goes out or the isp is doing service then the modem just needs a reboot. Out of habit I reboot everything, I unplug the modem and router and shut down the pc's then plug in the modem and let it sync up. When it's done I do the router then I'll start up the pc. Good luck!

Today my power went out and after it came back on and my boyfriend went to boot up his computer, Windows wouldn't load. After the first few startup screens, it goes black and freezes up.

When we put in the Windows installation disk to try and reinstall, it gets stuck at the "Setup is starting Windows" blue screen and won't go any further. The computer will not start in safe mode, either.

It did start up once normally in the midst of all this, but nothing was done differently before or after that time in restarting and it hasn't restarted normally since.

Any words of advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have been trying to sort out my computer for about a week now. My husband turned on my computer a few hours prior to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy and forgot to shut it down. We lost power and it was not shut down properly.

I get a BSOD when Windows loads and gets to the login portion of start up. I can't catch completely what it says but it says Driver_IRQL_Not_Less and Equal . Or something along those lines. Towards the bottom it references " ndis.sys. "

To get it to boot correctly I have to run in Safe Mode and do a System Restore to a previous restore point. It then boots normally when restored, but if I shut it down again I get the BSOD and have to start all over.

I went through all of my drivers and updated/ made sure all were updated. The only one that I did not update was for the Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter. The update came back as unsigned. So I disabled the Miniport Adapter. I haven't rebooted to see if this fixed the problem, because I am scared of having to start all over. I thought coming here to work with those smarted than myself, before my next reboot to see if someone would be willing to help would be a better solution.

When I boot off my Repair Disc and use StartUp Repair, it says " Start up repair could not detect a problem. McAfee is the most widely known cause of Stop 0xA, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
Uninstall McAfee Using McAfee Removal Tool.
Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
